I waited more than 20 years for this game. It is realy old and has no graphic improvment. But it is one of the best games ever.

Please appreciate the age, then consider the gameplay, the graphics should be low on your immediate gratification requirements. Keep in mind, subtle items like the way the math caculates the dice for each individual unit, and is re-adjusted as swordsmen fall. The perks the allow Halflings to resist, or the ability to fly or regenerate. This is a game that was ahead of its time, but the original release was PLAGUED by system crashing bugs and a level of technical understanding (enabling EMS memory on 486 machines) limited the audience and fanfare. The game was patched years too late (7 years was it?) and by then the momentum faded. The adjustments and additions the Caster of Magic upgrade brings will be lost on many but are a welcome upgrade to those of us who grew up to appreciate the gem this game originally was.

Far from perfect, but a solid 8/10 graphics + gameplay inclusive. If you're into real solid classic titles, give this a whirl.

Master of Magic was the best 4X game never made. It was released prematurely, with so many bugs that it was impossible to play. With all the problems, it still was a source of inspiration for many of us. Throughout the year, the lingering thought remained with many enthusiast.... what if this game was actually finished?

Well, now it is (almost) done! A few bugs still remain, but it is fully playable. And it is amazing.

The depth of this game is great, yet its accesibile to be fun for the new user. It is the best 4X game ever made, and it keeps getting better.

One can hope that one day it will be ported to new graphics and even better combat engine (although it already is the best I know). Some nostalgy would probably be lost for us old-timers, but I would buy such upgrade in a heartbeat

A true classic! i loved this game when i was a kid, and i still got the spellbook sitting on my bookshelf 25 years later! (back in the good old days, when PC games came with tons of thick ponderous reading material.)

finding this on here was a real treat, and the game still holds up all these many decades later! the basic yet deep system of managing cities and armies like any civilization style game has, with the added depth of a magic system that reminds me of the very early magic: the gathering spellbooks. same color layouts and basic spell tropes we've all become familiar with, and have become the mainstream since then.
everything here is familiar and comfterble now that every 4x game in the universe uses the same basic format, but back when this came out, it was truly unique!

This game is exactly like the original... with some of the rough edges sanded off. While I'd like a worthy sequel, I'm just happy to play it again without using kludges like DosBox. Much like other classic games, the gameplay still holds up well.

It takes a bit to learn how to play, since there's no tutorial other than the in-game help messages you can bring up.
Other than that however, this is easily one of my favorite games. It combines strategy and resource management really well with some medieval and fantasy elements. The classic look to it makes it all the more appealing, and it's super fun.

The music is very Virtual Sound Canvas. There are a lot of tweaks in the options. If you are having trouble during setup of a game, try double clicking on the text of the game option to select or deselect.

It's a blast from the past come to haunt our future! They've somehow resurrected this ancient legend of a game and included, I guess now making them somewhat official, some insanely fanatical fans' improvements to the sadly long abandoned game. Even beyond improving on the original (adding new wizards, spells, units, etc.), at least one of the variants can be run natively in Windows!

While this is all an amazing feat, please know going in, at the core, is a PC game from 1994, so while it's so cool to be able to play it again, the graphics and UI are going to be incredibly dated by today's standards (like Civilization 6 or Age of Wonders 3).

I've liked the original game very much, altough finding it a but unbalanced and not so challenging given a poor AI.
This new release is way better, and the Caster Of Magic mod is definitely what is needed in order to balance the game in a perfect way. Wery good AI, auto-generated map and spells, everything is good. Very good product.
Perhaps not a great appeal for its graphics (it's 30 years old), but a very nice and funny game!

This is one of the deepest 4X strategy games. I like both the Community Patch and CAster of Magic, although they have quite different rules. CoM AI is brutal and keeps attacking. It requires real skill to win even in lower levels. Community Patch is a more relaxing experience because the AI leaves you alone but they build so much units on higher levels that it is still quite challenging. I played this game back when it was released and started playing again now. It is very addictive and patches have ironed out most of the problems of original release. I can recommend this to anyone who cares more about depth and strategy and is not turned off by very old looking graphics and terrible sound effects (I did play with sound on back in the day but cannot do so any longer in 2021)

It's Master of Magic. Exactly like you remember it. It works and it's perfect.

The launcher lets you play the original version, the final patched version, or the community-modded Caster of Magic. All work in a Steam wrapped DOSBox (that's correctly configured for once). I played through several times with no crashes or graphics issues (on Windows 10). Music and sounds are correct and just like your Sound Blaster 16.

No regerts buying this full price.

I think it was more than 20 years ago when I played this game. After such a long time was a bit strange to face that huge pixels, but shorty I had to realise again that depths and the broad spectrum of spells and units, the diversity of this game is unmatched since its time. Let me know if you can recommend me anything like this.

Holy!!! They really fixed out all the bugs....
I played and completed an entire game from turn 1 to turn 300++ without a single crash to desktop.
No blue screen, no freeze and no hang on the over map... ...

One of the greatest PC games, one of the greatest games of any kind, of all time.
In over 20 years there has still never been a replacement that matched it's success.
Regardless of if you play the classic, the community patched, or the new Casters of Magic mod to the game.
This is a rare 10 out of 10 and at it's cost, especially when it's on sale, is a must buy if you're a fan of the genre.
It's both the greatest of the classic games of it's style and so good that it still holds up and arguably over shadows anything made since.

An undying classic, re-released with the fan-patch and Caster of Magic mod incorporated.
Do not fear the outdated graphics, for this is a strategy game, after all.

P.S. Low playtime caused by the fact that I use my custom modset, actual playtime, summed with the original release, is a few hundred hours.

This single-player turn-based fantasy strategy game is unparalleled to this day. It inspired many to try and recreate its glory - Age of Wonders, Elemental, Planar Conquest, Warlock to name but a few - but nobody reached its majesty. 11/10.

Among Master of Orion 2 and Colonization, Master of Magic is one of the three classic 4X games I keep coming back to every once in a while.
It features civilizationesque city building, tech (spell) progression, racial traits like MoO2 and an abundance of different spells, units and heroes with turn-based tactical battles.

It really is an amazing game, but it is very old and a little hard to get into - but imo it's well worth it.

This game is an epic masterpiece from the early 90's. It has elements of classic D&D (if you read the books), and is extremely addictive. I downloaded it last night, and woke up this morning to play it at 6:30 AM. It's 5:45 pm now, and I have to go get cat food. The design is fun and enthralling, and the fact that it's 8 bit graphics doesn't detract from the way you interact with the game. I think this cost me like 5 bucks? Steam has a dos-based-translator for it. I almost wept for joy when I found this game on steam. Don't think about it, just download it now.... start playing and give up on your family, your job and other things that are of lesser importance!

Awesome changes. Difficulty is hard now and you can use summon spells and so on which was never possible on the hardes difficulty before. If there would be a modern graphics that would be awesome.
as well as some modernisations in diplomatics and so on :)
If there is a new Master of Magic somewhere it's an auto buy for me!

Just two items to mention
#1. The game play is absolutely fun. And the re-playability is exceptional, and even more fun as you learn.

#2. The graphics are from the 90's - they suck. I wish someone would update the game, but change NOTHING about the way the game plays.

Best game since 1994, so glad this game is getting some love.

This game rolls together some of the best elements of Civilisation, Heroes of Might and Magic and then adds it's own twist. It's not pretty to look at, but if you can get past that you'll find a game rich in strategy and exceptional game play.

The Caster of Magic mod improves adds so many quality of life improvements and admittedly some much needed balance tweaks.

Great game, great improvements with DLC, AI is very smart compared to other 4x strategy games. Things I don't like - Caste of Magic DLC makes buildings, development cheaper. And this results in carpets of units in later game. Plus there are issues with combat AI when fighting neutral creeps (they run from you for some reason, this should be fixed)

Played this when it first came out. Every few years I would get the urge to play. I often looked for an updated version. The Warlock games, Planar Conquest and Worlds of Magic all came close, but didn't quite scratch the itch. I've played the MoM : Caster of Magic DLC for a few hours now, and am still deciding if I'll continue to play it this way or to go with the Community Patch version.

This is one of the greatest 4x ever created. It's a lot of fun, and I really enjoy playing the game. Amazingly this 1994 game just got a new DLC, Casters of Magic, which adds a bit more to the game. The graphics are dated, but you don't play this for the shiny graphics, you play it because of the depth and features. The few bucks I tossed at this game and the DLC were well worth it.

I legitimately feel bad for younger players who may dismiss this graphically-dated 4x gem. The passing years have dumbed-down the genre or carved off aspects to resell as DLC. With MoM it's literally all here, with depth and replayability that the Age of Wonders titles grasped for but never reached.

This was one of my favorite games back in the '90s and I was elated to see it had been updated to run under Windows 10. Not only that but there is a brand new DLC for it as well as a 'fan mod' that is supposed to be a nice update. I've not looked at either of them as yet though since I am still having a ball relearning the game after about 20 years.

The game itself is similar to the original Civilization game but set in a fantasy world with an extensive magic system thrown in. You go up against as many as 4 other wizards and fight it out on not one but two parallel worlds connected together by magic gates. There are a dozen or so races you can control and 5 different schools of magic (the same 5 as in Magic the Gathering) that you can mix and match for your character. Should you take a little expertise in several schools for flexibility or concentrate on just one to get the really powerful spells? To win you must either completely eliminate all the other wizards or cast the Spell of Mastery, a special spell that takes tons of research to learn and even more tons of magic to cast.

I really only have one complaint and it's really not one, just wishful thinking. The graphics were not updated to modern standards and 16 bit graphics on a modern video card and monitor look horrific. But it's still just as playable and as enjoyable as it was 25 years ago. With a price tag of just $5 I highly recommend getting it be you an old fan of the game or just someone who loves a well designed game no matter how ancient.

I spent countless hours during my high school years playing this game. To this day it is my all time favorite strategy game, possibly favorite game of any kind. It's what all other strategy games are measured against and they all came up lacking. I saw this was finally available on Steam and bought it right away. I look forward to rebuilding my empire.

Master of Magic is still fun even if you missed the original release

If you are here, checking the store page, you probably know what Master of Magic is about. If you’re not familiar with it, take a look at other reviews from more experienced players. Speaking for myself (who have no nostalgia for it and just started playing it recently), I can say it’s still a great game, and relatively easy to get into if you don’t mind the old-school controls and slightly dated interface. That being said, my review is focused on what this Slitherine version is about, so let’s get started.

How well this version runs on modern systems?

Being a Windows 10 user, I’m aware that compatibility with older games can be a pain sometimes. Gladly, I don’t have this issue with this release, as Master of Magic runs emulated on DosBox, and it works flawlessly. Don’t worry, the game’s installer set up everything for you. After downloaded and installed, you can choose between the original Master of Magic, the Community Patch or Caster of Magic (if you own the DLC). I dug the files and found out three versions of Master of Magic installed; that means that you can have different save files for each version with no issues. Despite supporting the Open Source community, I’m not a Linux user, but thankfully someone has posted a way to run this game on the penguin’s Operating System – check this thread for more info. I know nothing about how it runs of Mac, sorry, but maybe you can search how to runs DosBox on macOS.

Choose your favorite store

If you own Master of Magic on GOG (the version previously published by Atari), don’t worry: GOG updated their version sold there to this new Slitherine version, so you won’t need to buy the base game again; just the Caster of Magic DLC if you wish. By the way, with Slitherine’s acquisition, we can expect a future remake or sequel. Now it’s a good time to be a Master of Magic fan.

Conclusion

I can highly recommend this game and I think it's still a good gaming choice nowadays. I only got to know about Master of Magic by playing games inspired by it (like Age of Wonders, Planar Conquest, the recent Warlock series, etc), taking into account that it's an obscure game in my country, and I’m very pleased in how Master of Magic still holds up. This game’s lasting appeal, even to someone who missed the original release, it’s a proof that it stood the test of time.

The best game of my life came to Steam.
I've been playing Master of Magic since it first came out in '94. I was in middle school back then, I think my dad mail ordered the game for me and my brother as a gift. I played it over and over. I played it even after I got the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PS 2, 3, 4, signed up for WoW classic, BC, FT, got the Elder Scrolls series, and until last year, after I learned about the Caster of Magic mod.

I'll just say that it fundamentally changed my life. I've developed a strong preference for fantasy themed games, novels and even board games and strategy games. I've read many fantasy novels and light novels, even wrote some, and went on to play fantasy-themed RPG's and simulations like HOMM series and Baldur's Gate series. But still, even after literally 25 years of challenge, Master of Magic is still the best game ever for me.

The goods:
- Endless replayability of course. Every single game is unique, because the world is randomly generated. Heck, before the 1.31 patch, I remember games when my capital city was in a sorcery node!
Also the huge variety of races only add up to the replayability aspect. Ever wished HOMM had 15 races? Maybe wanted 5+ factions in Warcraft series? Here you are!
Also the 'score' aspect adds quite a bit of challenge, in the vanilla mode without Caster of Magic at least. My highest score was 190%(1.31), but I'm sure there are people who scored higher than that.
- The graphic and sound used to be okay back in the mid '90s(although, if you consider that the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn were released in late '94 too, it isn't particularly impressive...). I always liked the mid-game BGM. It was quiet and comforting. But now, the 'figures' of the fantastic creatures are more cute&adorable than cool.
- The game balance has improved a lot over the patches. Long ago, if you played one of the weaker races like the orcs or Klackons you had to be very lucky or had to choose winnable spellbooks to win the game. Well, you still do need good spells but at least the Paladins were nerfed a lot...

Bads:
- No 'Mac' version(on steam).
- It's a 25 year old game, so the visuals could use some refreshing. I hear Slitherine is developing Master of Magic 2.
- Nothing else. Okay, if you're challenging for a high score, it'll be a total time-sink. You will have lost days, weeks, months of raw time of your life to this game before you know it.

I think Arthur Clarke, who wrote 2001 Space Odyssey, once said that nothing is comparable to the 'Dune' series in SF other than LOTR. I'm just a random gamer, but I'll put my opinion here: I've never seen any strategy game comparable to MoM but *maybe* Genghis Khan III from Koei. And sadly the Genghis Khan series is long gone...

Anyway, if you like 4x fantasy games and are looking forward to Master of Magic 2 that Slitherine software is developing, you could throw in your support for Master of Magic 1 to help with their project. In total, I'm sure I played over 5000(probably much more) hours or so of the game so my view of the game may be biased. But MOM is just that great a game.

This is one of the best games i have played in my life and i have been playing it for about 20 years.

Everything here is great. Good balance, straightforward play.
No micro management to the minimum detail that so often gets tiresome.
Huge variety of spells.
Huge variety of heroes.
All races seem very different when playing them with their own benefits.
Map is huge.

Simple, engaging strategy with the right amount of depth.

10/10 top 10 of all time.
Have probably played about 1000 hours of this.

This is one of my best games of all time. I have been playing it for about 20 years. Similiar to Master of Orion 2 this is an absolute classic that was never quite reached again. As soon as the DLC came out i bought it here and on GOG. So in short iam biased.

If you are looking for a complex turn-based strategy game that will kick your butt a buch of times and do not care about the newest graphics this is a must buy. You get the replay value of decades to look forward to for the price of few coins.

Essential DOS strategy title. Way ahead of its time. Hero management like a MOBA. Grand strategy like the Total War series. This is the real 'one more turn'.

Master of Magic is my favourite video game. And playing it again after a number of years, I am reminded of just what appealed to me about this game. It's rather challenging but there's so much meat on the bones of this game! Yes the graphics are dated when compared to more modern fare but this game is rather good just the same. There's a lot of substance and the brand new DLC only adds replayability to this classic! I look forward to playing much much more now that it is finally on Steam!
