  • Konstruiere deine eigenen Raumfahrzeuge mithilfe Hunderter Kombinationsmöglichkeiten.

The first few hours are pretty fun, but beyond that, you discover it's just the same routine of doing the same puzzle minigame over and over again with no meaningful distinction.

If you adore the historical space race and don't care much for complexity in games, this is for you, but if you have a taste of strategy game, stay clear of this one.

Fun idea but poor execution. UI is clunky and gameplay goes quickly from interesting to tedious. Cutscenes are repetitive and the graphics are fine but not good enough for how much time you will spend looking at the same things.

A fantastic journey through space history management, with a slightly lacking interface.

Play as the space agency of your choice

You start at the dawn of space exploration, with launching a sounding rocket. You follow the events that happened in earths history, so next you can launch a satellite into earth's orbit, launching animals into space, a satellite into the moons orbit, and then humans. The space race is on!
Each mission generates science and support. Science is used for researching the three techtrees, missions buildings and vehicles (rockets). More on the techtrees later. Support is required for funding the enterprise.
A mission starts with crafting a payload. Everything you craft requires cash and time. When the payload is complete, it's time to design and produce the rocket, consisting of an upper stage and a booster. You generally strive to keep costs as low as possible, and this usually results in the lightest model with the quickest building time. The next step is picking a launch date per month. Months can be optimal, suboptimal, or impossible launch dates. Suboptimal gives a 20% penalty on launch reliability. You can also assign a training focus that gives a bonus per month till launch for launch or payload reliability, or the generated science or support.
Then it's time for the launch! Dependant on the rocket and their experience, the launch has a chance to go normal, perfect/with problems (giving a bonus or a penalty to the payload rolls), or downright critical which causes an explosion.
After a successful launch there is one or several minigames regarding the payload. Payloads have to be positioned on a course, trajectory, or can basically encompass anything that has to be done in space. The minigame is an intuitive puzzle to create the required amount of navigation, command and communication. There is a 50% bonus to the rewards of the mission if you reach double the amount. On easy this is indeed easy, while on hard it's near impossible. So it makes sense to do this automatically on higher difficulties, besides the fact that it saves a lot of time.
The end goal is to land a crew on Mars, after selecting missions to explore the solar system. You can make a selection, since it's generally not worth going beyond Jupiter, it's simply too far without a good reward to keep your limited missions slots occupied for times approaching and exceeding ten years. The missions that bear a significant historical meaning are rewarded with bonus support for being the first three nations to complete them, in a descending degree. Once a mission is completed, similar missions can pop up as 'request missions' to focus yourself on generating science and support, but can also be a way to create funding, which is generally the most limiting factor in the game. Lucrative missions, as they are called, don't award any science or support.

I ran out of allowable characters for reviewing, see a portion about the techtree in the first comments.

Accessibility & UI

There are several issues that slow down gameplay unnecessarily. These issues are greater for me personally because I'm handicapped, however it slows it for everyone.
My first point of discomfort wasn't apparent for me until far down my first playthrough. I was wondering why I had to click all over the screen? The advance button is always bottom right, return bottom left. Designing a rocket is all the way left on the side... Why is nothing centralised and many more or less at the same position??? Because this is designed for mobile. Or designers are brainwashed in creating for mobile. The positions of the buttons make sense for mobile. It shouldn't be a big implementation to shift the positions, so it requires minimal mouse movements. They still update the game, so I hope this suggestion will be considered. My solution for this problem was playing in a tiny window.
But there's more. Everything needs to be confirmed! For instance, if you have a mission with a phase ready to be played, the game will pop up a notice for that. You have to click to dismiss this message, and then click again on a totally different location to open said mission. Why not open the mission automatically? Saves two clicks which makes the game much more fluent. And there are more issues of this nature. It would be awesome to be able to queue researches, so you don't have to enter the tech tree every time. Maybe even make a toggle not to stop the game when a research is finished. That way a game could be completed in a few hours, which gives better replayability in my opinion.
The last issue is designing a rocket. If you don't know what you're working with, this phase is very vague. Different screens for upper stages, boosters and contractors. This could have been one screen. This process could be greatly improved if you could select minimal cost, building time, or any other variable and let the game piece together the design. Or automatically load your previous design for a similar mission.

Final thoughts

The first impression of this game was awesome! It's great to play through space history, and it's very educational as well! And how cool is it to hang around in a side view of our beautiful solar system! It made me learn the positions of the planets' order, which never crossed me really. And I think the sizes of the planets and sun are correct relatively, and it's cool to see how big the sun is! Now that I think of it, maybe earth is depicted too large... Regardless, it's a cool place to hang around in!
For my first playthrough I picked easy, which is a mistake. On easy you won't have any competition at all. Normal is only fun if you're going for getting first on all milestones. On first playthrough I recommend hard. If you want a challenging playthrough: hard with iron core (=ironman). Buried in advanced setup for a new game is also very easy and very hard. Very hard is a bit weird, on my playthrough at the end I was starved for science and funds, there were very few request missions. I managed to beat it because my rivals stopped progressing, very awkward.
Dedicated to do all achievements, I did in total six runs. Two times with China, because there was a new achievement regarding the exploration mission China performed on Mars. And because of this game I know and watched a video of Scott Manley about it, and that's awesome!
This game is far from perfect, but covers such an awesome subject! An easy recommend for anyone interested in space!

73/100
If the game would have the suggestions I made, I would rate it 85/100

A very fun management game on an very interesting topic. I only complain about the mini games. They are fun ... but at the beginning :). In the second part, the games are time-consuming and repetitive. Performing missions automatically is not very profitable compared to manual mini-games, because I almost always finished them with a bonus. I would like it to be resolved somehow: maybe mini-games only in the most important missions (not this additional missions) or more varied. Of course, you can also solve them automatically and consider it an additional difficulty in the game :).

But generally I recommend game:)

It is nice to have choices of games that don't involve murdering things. The graphics are very...mobile app. But its not ugly. I am enjoying this game alot, especially the interest the game has in the history of space exploration. It isn't Kerbel Space program where you are diving into physics, rather its more of a history exploration and managing your space programs budget and weighing choices of time vs safety vs effectiveness vs popularity while trying to beat your rivals to the various firsts. I never knew the USSR were the first to take pictures of a planets surface on Venus.

Great idea, but...
Why all the mission mini games?
Why do you tell me my chances of failure for skipping mini game is ~2%, but in reality it fails like 20% of the time??? its infuriating!
Why the half arsed rocket animation with each launch?

Its a nice ~3 hours of fun, until you start losing deployment after deployment to the skip feature when success should be ~90%... Maybe i'm just reading it wrong, but then that's probably due to bad design!

This is a great, lightweight, educational exploration of space exploration. It includes historical facts about the various space agencies, set against a backdrop of a race to various milestones, such as first agency to the moon, or the final challenge - first agency to land a human on Mars. I enjoyed the multiple ways you could work through the milestones, the variation allowed in rocket design, and the comparisons the game provides between what you're doing and what happened in the real world. No timers, no reaction based events - just thinking through your approach and finding the best way to minimize your risks.

After you made it through the horrible tutorial, Mars Horizon is actually a very enjoyable game! I have a general interest in Astronomy and wanted to learn more about space travel and its history. I tried playing Kerbal Space Program to some extend but quickly realized I could not live up to its potential with the little time I have.

I was looking for something more casual than KS and found it in Mars Horizon! It plays a little dry but I guess that is due to the serious theme. It clearly is more high level than KS and you are not as much connected to your vehicles as you just select the parts and the rest happens without your involvement.

I really think it has some educational value as you learn a lot about the different missions you have to take to slowly prepare for a landing on another planet. Again, it is on a very high level as you basically just match components to match the required numbers.

It has a lot of milestones to achieve and you compete with other space agencies. So the main part of the game is actually time management to be able to achieve those milestones first. I would even consider it more a time management game and less a simulation.

Once you launched your vehicle, you have to do a lot of mini games to successfully complete your missions in space with your payloads. Those mini games are basically very similar but with different challenges. Some of them can be quite hard and some are really easy. If you don't like them, you can skip them with a small chance of failure (not for milestone missions, though, where you have to do the mini games manually). They are typically followed by nice animations that feel like a reward they let you personally connect to the missions a lot better.

A downside is that it becomes clear quite fast who wins the game and it is very difficult to catch up when you are behind. Hoping for a failure of the opponent is not enough. I really think you should get a speed boost when you perfectly clear a mini game.

It is a clear recommendation, if you want to learn something about space travel and like simulation games. If you enjoyed KS or don´t have enough time for it (as I do), you should really enjoy it. Compared to KS, it plays in a real world setting as well which I like better.

This game has great potential, but execution is very poor. There are some issues, a lot really:
1) Solar system is really lacking, there are only main planets plus moon,
2) Building a rocket is like 3 clicks and you can't do it in advance,
3) You can't build your own probes and you send like probes from 1960 all the time,
4) Base building feels like a cheap mobile mini game,
5) There is nothing much to do when you are waiting for new mission phases,
6) AI doesn't follow the same game rules as a player.
I can go on and on, but really buy KSP instead. Or if you really want it to wait for some heavy discount.

This is simple yet effective space agency simulator. From the early days lunching first test rocket to landing manned crew on Mars, this game offers a journey of mid level management or research, base building, simplistic rocket designing and race against other NPC agencies. For those who like to see progression and space research this is a perfect game.

Game graphics is simplistic yet impactful and so it runs smooth in 4K@60fps even on weaker graphic cards. Music is there but you can easily mute it and play in background whatever you see fit. Also game poses several levels of difficulty and easiest difficulty can be quite the zen experience. I haven't encountered any bugs during campaign.

The downside of the game is that UI is nice for the early game but for the late game it can use quality of life improvements. Additional button on the right bar with available missions wouldn't be quite welcoming with the table like list of which planets, rewards and mission types in a table like view would be great. Once in the mid game, it would be common to have multiple planned missions but we often need to switch tabs to see for which mission we are building a rocket etc. It would be nicer if we have a big title on top indicating planet and mission type.

Overall game is a very enjoyable and there is always this urge to play few months more, to finish one more mission, achieve one more milestone.... Also, player can loose track of time with this game quite easily! Clearly there is a great potential from the devs with these types of games. I admire how they have provided such a nice visuals with so little. Kudos!

I like this game but I should be clear, it isn't a game that you will play over and over, but the time you do have together you will cherish.

The game can get repetitive at the late game phase and I can see the replayability being low, maybe if you are an achievement hunter you could go for first place on the other projects you lost the last time around.

This seemed like it would be exactly my type of game, but I just can't recommend it. The gameplay just isn't very interesting. It's mostly planning in which order to take which nodes in the tech tree. Building rockets isn't interesting, you just select an upper and a lower stage and it's usually easy to select the optimal choice.

The base building subgame isn't very interesting either. Placing the right buildings adjacent to each other can have positive or negative effects. But this seems totally arbitrary. It has no basis in reality and the effects are small enough that it doesn't even matter that much. The fact that the base area is completely covered in stuff you have to remove is as unrealistic as it is frustrating. To determine the success of missions (after the launch), there is a minigame that gets old very quickly. You can auto-resolve some of them eventually but you still have to play many of them.

The game is full of RNG. That's not inherently bad and you can usually mitigate it quite a bit, but if that 2% chance of a critical failure during launch happens at the wrong moment, it can really screw up your playthrough. This might actually be realistic, but not it's not fun.

This is a successor to Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space. In this game, you progress your space program to a Mars landing, instead of stopping at the moon. A mini-game replaces the tiger teams for determining whether various stages of missions succeed. There are a lot of launches over the course of a run, so it's good that there is an autoresolve for missions that are similar to ones you've completed before.
If you liked BARIS, then this game is great. If you never played BARIS, be aware that this is a gamified vision of space development, not a simulator like Kerbal. As far as I can tell the random number generator is fair, but it does play a large role in determining mission success.

Neat puzzle mechanics that tie in with the space race to include resource gathering. In the later part of the game, it starts losing its luster and could use a little more variation on the puzzles (or at least make each strategy a little more interesting. It could probably benefit from replay value if there was more to do on the Moon and Mars, rather than touch and go concepts. Maybe accentuate some base building or survival puzzles on these two platforms.

Pros

-Space

Cons

-Most of the tech tree upgrades remain unused
-The mission minigame gets very repetitive and boring after a couple times
-Lots, and lots of mouseclicking
-Not worhth the full price
-Personally don't feel replaying after completing the game once

So it's Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space with modern aesthetics.

In some ways it's dumbed down for a less grognardy audience. You can fail, but there's no gritty news reels about the famous IRL astronauts you just killed. In general, it's much more chill and casual as opposed to dreading that you can hit a crit fail on any stage of a mission.

Not a great game, but certainly a good one given its price point.

8.5/10 Space Survival Management Game
- A simplified version of KSP.
- Was worried that the building system at your rocket base would play a large role in the game, thankfully it did not.
- Loved the use of diplomacy and competing or allying with other countries, and doing coop missions with other countries.
- Multiplayer???
- Did not like the little mini game after launching a rocket. The mini game was repetitive and very basic... too basic to the point that they should remove it. But I'd prefer a different system to replace the current mini game.
- Wished space stations system was expanded upon.
- The addition of managing fuel and food/water for crewed missions would be awesome.
- Would be better if this wasn't called Mars Horizon, so the game could be more then just reaching mars, considering you can do missions on other planets.
- Leaving the solar system to go to Alpha Centauri would be cool (would require a warp drive, or just an expedition ship)
- Add Brazil as a country
- Starship???

Interesting space puzzle game, not so much a KSP style space simulator. Good if you want that high level thinking, and less nits and grits of flying the rockets.

While this game is fairly simple in it's presentation, it's surprisingly in depth and detailed. I'm sure a lot will compare it to Kerbal, which I can't do because I have never played that game. But this game interested me because of it's realistic history timeline of space flight. I would definitely recommend this game.

PLAY THE DEMO!!!

This game is not for everyone. It is luck based and very repetitive. That being said, the devs gave us a demo, play it! The full game is more of the same, if you like the demo buy the game. Easy as that and as it should be. The demo contains about 15-20% of the full game.

Also this IS NOT kerbal space program. This is a completely different, more casual, game.

What an absolulte joke of a statistical RNG. I want to like this game so badly, but after 2 hours I can honestly say it has made me change my mind on how statistics and failure rates work. You see, I thought 5% failure rate was very low. But apparently, that is the amount of times I need to save scrum the same mission getting new launch conditions and launch statistics.

I want to autoresolve a satellite mission and it says 7% failure change, 35% extra winnings, and you do the math to fill in the regular success rate because i can't math anymore. Without failure, I lose the roll of the dice.

I can't. I just fucking cant. I can't look at the the bar taunt me with an overwhelming blue calming success chance just to putter out in the first tick. I can't prepare anymore, I can't get 99% success rate every launch. I want to love this game so badly and if I truely got fucked by RNG then so can the developers by this bad review...come at me.

At start: great game! lots of potencial, funny to research parts, build rockets and acomplish goals. BUT: Just after a few hours it gets so repetitive so quickly. The minigame to acomplish the golas is fun, but there is virtually no difference between the different missions you have but the text is displayed to you. I think that after A LOT of updates it can become a great game, but now unfortunately it isn't.

What a nice looking, fun and historically educational game this is! Mars Horizon is easy to play (controls) but offers several challenges. The player leads a space agency competing against or cooperating with four other agencies. Although I simply liked to finally put boots on the Martian soil.

There are three tech trees and many missions to unlock. Although it has the look and feel of a casual game, it provides enough dilemma's to be a game of strategic choice. It therefore challenges the mind. I'd call it a management game plus historical educational content.

I loved it, had several dozens of hours of fun. The only downside is that the 'confirm' button doesn't have designated key such as enter or space. So I had to use the mouse more often than my wrist liked. :-)

Games in this style have the potential for true edutainment. It's even fun to unlock articles in the Spacepedia!

Why would I an 80 year old geezer recommend this game. Simple really I can play it and enjoy it. Thought process and decision making are what is needed and my old fingers can work that. I like the anticipation you feel as you launch your creation upwards into space, sometimes getting it wrong and your named astronaut gets obliterated.
You should buy this game if you need to wind down after a hard day. Your mind forgets the day as you concentrate on building your rockets trying to beat the competing nations to become the first.

This is a game meant to teach younger players about space and the history of space exploration as you retrace historical events and try to beat the clock.

This is not for serious gamers that have played things like KSP or other micro-managing space games. I beat it in 8 hours. I don't see the replayablility unless you play as different countries with different rockets.

SO! I've owned this for like 4 hours at time of reviewing (slightly more if you count my demo time) and honestly even after just 4 hours I can recommend this. I felt it was worth my £15 even after just this length of time. I also felt I should review as tons of reviews suggest that because 'it's just lots of mini games' it is somehow a downside...a major part of it is the post-launch resource mini game, but it's a super fun and puzzling mini game so it's brill in my opinion and I don't see how that can be deemed a negative! Also there is so much more to it than the 'once you've launched' mini game, such as managing your resources in order to beat your rivals to objectives!

While Kerbal Space Program is one of my all time favourite games, I can absolutely recommend Mars Horizon as a much more simple yet no less entertaining version of a realistic human space exploration game.

If you're super into topics such as the space race and more recently the possibility of humans on mars then this is one for you. I totally recommend!

This game is like Civilization with a minigame/puzzle mechanic taking the place of combat. In no way similar to Kerbal. It's engaging early on but the mid-late game becomes very repetitive. You wind up just grinding through the minigame for all of the missions where it's mandatory without much thought, and it just feels less and less rewarding.

You are trying to run a space agency from its first test rocket to landing a man on mars. To do so, you must:
1. Manage and expand your base. Money is always a constraint, and putting certain buildings next to each other makes them all work better (research labs together; launching pads and vehicle construction facilities).
2. Prioritize research among missions, space vehicle components, and buildings to improve your base
3. Plan your mission. You are constantly balancing your need for science, money and public support .
4. The mission mini-games.

The first time all the way through was very entertaining. There are multiple grand strategies to get you to the end-point. Do you focus on Earth and the inner planets, or more on the outer? Astronauts or more non-manned exploration? Cooperate with other agencies, or mostly go alone?

You are competing with 4 other agencies. Each mission provides a reward, and the milestone rewards have payoff bonuses if you are one of the first 3. When planning, you don't want to plan a major mission where you aren't in the top 3.

After awhile, the mission mini-games become tedious. If you take the time to think about it, you will never fail them, and usually get the performance bonus. In the alternative, you can let your base crew handle the mission, but this is much riskier. Missions will fail more often, and you are less likely to get the performance bonus. Still, this makes the game much more playable at the late stages.

I got 90 hours of it. Any game I play 90 hours is worth $60, and this was much less.

I really, really, really, really, really, quite liked Mars Horizon. Enough to make a video about it.

(I should mention I played on PlayStation - I used Steam for the pre-release demo)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk8ziOoEeOM

If you don't want to watch the video (boo!) here's some quick goodies:

It's a science game and it makes you feel clever even if you are dumb. Source: Self.
A mix between building a small base, playing card games, and playing at being a company manager.
You can go competitive or you can relax with the ambient music and take your time (my preferred way to play)

Very cool, very educational, and very, very chilled out. Recommended if you like sim/management games.

A really accessible space strategy sim that's also educational, I could not stop playing Mars Horizon. This is very much one of those 'one more turn' games - within two days I'd completed everything the game had on offer, couldn't stop thinking about it and wanted MORE. I'll probably do a replay sometime in the future and aim for 100% achievements - there's definitely replay value there!

I have chronic fatigue and sometimes struggle to get to grips with space sim processes because of brain fog, but this game was simple enough for me to pick up easily. The graphics are simple, yet pretty, and the music super atmospheric.

I actually played this on stream (was kindly given a key by the devs), and we had a lot of fun naming astronauts and rockets after community members as well.

If you are looking for another Kerbal game where you control all facets of constructing and piloting your spacecrafts, this isn't it. But if you are looking for a engaging, challenging, and in-depth resource management/strategy game set in space, this is the perfect game for you. Starting in the late 50s at the beginning of the space race, your goal is to compete against other space agencies as you try to accomplish milestones in the exploration of our solar system.

While it seems easy at first, you quickly realize that while you were focusing on one objective, your competition has been focusing on another and you'll be finishing dead last. While the ultimate goal of the game is to be the first to land people on Mars, you'll be constantly striving to outpace the rest, deciding which milestones are more important to finish ahead in, and constantly trying to manage your funds, research, and vehicle construction. I also personally really enjoyed the mini game challenge after each launch of trying to conduct your objective while obtaining enough resources to get the bonus, where one wrong turn could prevent that sweet pay day.

Simply put, if you enjoy games where you have to manage resources, strategize against the competition, and feature enough random events to give you surprises and challenges along the way, this game is a great buy.

UPDATE: Having now finished the game, which I still enjoy, I would like to detail a few more areas. Mostly that once you open up the outer planets the game slows down HARD. You do still have request missions and research to tend to, but the milestone missions you are competing against other agencies take years now as you venture further into space. To keep the space race interesting, I would suggest the devs add in more milestone missions with shorter length during the 3rd and 4th eras. Once you enter the Mars race however things do pick up again, where you are fighting to finish first in that last mile of the marathon.

Overall I'd give this game a 7/10. I spent a lot of time with YouTube up or podcasts going on my second screen, so this game is definitely passive once you understand the mechanics. If you are looking for something a bit more engaging however, I'd suggest something else.

Game feels deep at the very beginning, but in fact turns out to be very shallow and repetitive. It doesn't matter what and where I'm doing, it's always about choosing two cheapest rocket stages capable to lift payload and solving horrible minigame from hell, that should be banned. It can be auto solved, but doing it manually returns 50% bigger reward. Whole thing is just about grinding the tech tree and it doesn't really feel like something new or different is going to happen with another tech node unlocked, since everything is always done through the same boring minigame.

It should be entirely removed, or auto-solve option shouldn't be able to fail a task that is so braindead simple. Also increased reward should be removed or always granted and game rebalanced to that. I feel like im 2% behind China because I'm too sane to manually do this thing 15 times per hour and grab 50% bonus everytime

The absolutely right game for every fan of aerospace and space travel with the right shot of management simulation. It further brings a lot historical moments in aerospace to life although not at a gigantic visual level. It's more the small details of the tech tree bringing you slowly toward the famous space missions while time runs and the years e.g. around the moon landing comes and goes, and with it the famous rocket types and space capsule. The travel through aerospace history is the big strength of this game, while the limited amount of real game play mechanics are its weakness.

A very meh game. It's moderately interesting at first but the more you play, the less fun it is.

The little mini game built into all the missions becomes really annoying and tedious the more you play. At some point you will just skip them completely and take the auto-resolve.

Gameplay is meh, the AI -will- cheat to beat you a certain things so don't be shocked.

I played it through completely once, and promptly uninstalled it.

i was pretty excited to play this game at first because i thought you got to design your ships and feel like you apart of the space race. but its not at all like that. the design part is just choosing your booster and upper stage. thats it. its just alot of clicking through a story line. you dont custumize anything. there is no real challenge its just plan mission click launch click the only real challenge is clicking buttons in a certain order on missions but other than that there really is no game play here at all. its like a story game where you can click certain things to make the story continue in a way you want. its not a game at all, waste of money and my time.

If you're looking for a successor to Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space, this ain't it. It's kinda fun, very addictive, but way too shallow.

Some of the research and rocket reliability stuff is interesting, but there's no real mission planning or configurations, no astronaut training. All the interesting stuff in the trailer - like docking, rendezvous, EVAs, landers - those are all just cutscenes you get at the end of generic minigames. You don't get any meaningful choice about them.

Waste of 20 bucks. You pick a payload. Then you put together a rocket. You pick upper stage and booster. Launch after it builds. Add buildings. After launch you have to pick things while in orbit. Like you need 3 comms two data. You have to figure out the correct combo and not destroy the sat or cap. You never see the astronauts. VERY repetitive. Been playing it for three days. Figure maybe it changes the more you play. Same boring crap over and over. Can not find one positive thing about it.

Mars Horizon is a good game. I really enjoyed the management aspects of this game. It feels like an improved version of BASM. The art style is good but it is a matter of taste. I prefer a more realistic art style of BASM. The interface could be better, and certain aspects of the game like astronauts should have a little more depth. Overall it is an enjoyable game. I would give Mars Horizon a mixed score, but we can’t do it. The main reason I've given a negative score is that I hate mini-game during missions. It is not a bad mini-game. It is well-balanced. Basic goals are easy enough while bonus goals provide challenges from time to time. The main downside is that it gets old quickly. During longer missions, you have to play a mini-game a few times in a row with little variety. Yes, you can skip it, but you risk a failure and by playing the mini-game it is almost impossible to lose a mission. I get so tired of it that I couldn't put myself to finish the campaign.

Very boring after a few hours, once you know how narrow the scope of the game is. The screenshots you see on the store page are the only screens you'll see in the game, there's little else. It's a board game set in space, with gamey mechanics similar to rolling dice. There are no rewards for completing objectives other than to lead you to the next one.

I'm on the fence with this one. I really like the premise of the game: Race against other countries to Mars.

The way this game woks is that you can send a rocket comprised of an upper stage and a booster stage of your choosing on missions. When you unlock & complete certain milestone missions, you advance to the next era, offering more advanced missions. The missions themselves consist of an RNG launch, followed by one or more puzzles that also rely on RNG. These puzzles are usually very doable and rarely unfair. You do have to plan in advance though.
Another thing you have to manage is research, which allows you to unlock new rocket parts, mission types and base buildings. Often, you have to allocate your research smartly to be the first one to do a certain milestone mission (e.g. landing on the moon).

My main gripe with this game is that it becomes quite repetitive after a while. It's basically build a rocket, launch the rocket, do a puzzle, do some more puzzles and repeat. While the mission parameters change and new elements get added to the rockets and missions from time to time, the basic concept always remains the same. Essentially you are always doing the same thing, which will eventually get repetitive and, yes, boring. During the mid-game, a single mission can take over a hundred rounds (months) to complete and all you can do is sit there and await the arrival of your rocket at some far-away planet. While you can skip rounds, it can become frustrating seeing the remaining months counter slowly decrease towards zero.

What I really like about this game aside from the premise though, is the historical accuracy. You progress in this game the same way the real space programs progressed starting in the 1960s. There are also tons of articles about basically everything. I think it's good and important that the devs paid attention to detail here.

In conclusion, I think this game could have benefited greatly from some changes to the mission system. In its current state it sadly fails to entertain me for long enough to actually complete it. It just became tedious after a while. Ultimately, I do not think that this is a bad as I certainly had fun for the most part. It's just the repetitiveness that eventually lost me. I may return to it in the future though. One final note: The price tag is a little steep in my opinion for what the game offers. You should probably wait for a sale if you want to get it.

If you are a real space nerd and can handle repetitiveness, I'd say wait for a sale and go for it. Otherwise, I don't think this game can keep you entertained for long enough. Because of that, I can (barely) not recommend it.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. This is easily the best manager I have played in a decade.

However, a warning up front. This is not readily obvious. Not, because the game starts outright weak. Instead, it seems to deliver exactly the underwhelming gameplay one learns to expect from indies nowadays. You build a rocket, you fire a rocket, and sometimes it rains. Everything hangs on the roll of a dice. Which makes the space missions look like a lackluster mini game.

Here's the good news. It gets better. A lot. I just ended my first (short) campaign after 65 hours by landing a crew on Mars. While doing so, my palms were sweaty, because up until the very last turn I wasn't sure I would make it. Magic question: When did the last manager make your palms sweat?

Turns out, the beginning of the campaign is slow and dicey, because your equipment is still in the stone age. Once your equipemt gets better, so does your role in being successful. Especially in space missions: Better euqipment allows you to react immediately to failure and prevent the mission from going randomly kablooie. You will reach the point, where you actually are in mission control.

And then it gets better. At the point, where you flatly expect to haul in bonus rewards on every mission, a single, additional objective is introduced, for instance controlling heat during re-entry. Now you play with the big boys, and big boys don't play fair. Expect your hubris to be violated now and then.

And then it gets better. In the late game, missions may have two necessary side objectives. And their effect may change from turn to turn. Did I tell you, that my hands got sweaty?

As it turns out, space missions aren't some dumb little mini game, but the heart and the soul of MH's gameplay. Honestly, I am impressed, how the devs took a surprisingly simple concept and turned it into hours and hours of sitting-on-the-edge-of-the-seat action.

Also, if your Windows 10 is as wobbly as mine, you may like to hear, that you can save every wee bit of progress. Even in space. Funnily, I have never played any game before, where this was not a good excuse for reloading critical failures. Once you are out off the phase, in which your rockets accomplish little more than incinerating the neighbors' Begonias, a critical becomes so rare, that it is part of the fun. It will make you want to beat the Soviets (or in my campaign the pesky ESA) even harder.

Finally, the game was done with care and polish. In 65 hours I had one bug, and it was easy to work around. And in order to signify, how much this game is more than I expected: In 1991 they do switch the Soviet flag for today's Russian tricolor.

Simply put. this game is a diamond in the rough of indie mediocrity.

Mars Horizon is a GREAT game. Learning space science history along side a long campaign progression is really astounding. I have both the PC and Switch version and both are excellent. Where KSP excels at teaching the actual engineering of space flight Mars Horizon is a true space agency simulation, and its the vest best of breed. Highly recommend.

Presented well but no substance. Really wish I had not went over the 2 hour mark and will probably play it more to feel I have had my money's worth even thou I know it was a mistake purchase.

A very nice indeed space agency managerial game. You compete against (or collaborate with) other 4 space agencies from early launch prototyping to crewed landing on Mars, the final goal of the game. The learning curve is reasonable thanks to the various tutorial tooltips that introduce new aspects of the game as they appear.

The game remains relatively fresh through the campaign by both introducing new options and new managerial aspects (avoiding spoilers), and by continuously presenting new events that you can interact with. Managing the payloads in space can get a little tedious over time but there's an option of autoresolve such missions, allowing the player to concentrate on the big picture.

Graphics-wise, the game is okay. It is stylish, but definitely not 2020. The UI is quite good. For instance it make easy to find which vehicle to research to complete a certain mission. The only somehow annoying part is that there's not an unique, simple view of all available missions. Instead, you need to scroll through all planets and click on the planet to see the available missions for that planet.

Music is relaxing and adequate for the kind of game as well.

Games like this justify the existence of a neutral recommendation button. I want so badly to recommend this game, everything about it is so well designed but that mini game gets so unplayably boring when it's all you get for 20+ hours. Don't get me wrong; it's also designed well but there just needs to be something other than counting icons. If you're interested in this game, definitely give it a shot but be warned that it's a long game with a short loop.

Good Idea, bad implementation. Not enough control and planning for missions, primitive puzzle at orbit, unclear advantages of competitors, extreme dependence on random generator, and no national programs flavor except bad naming for rockets....
This game had potential to be so much more, but now it just an educational arcade for 10 years old.

Unfortunately, a negative review.
Loved the idea and the theme, but the execution is lackluster.
Very simplified and dumbed down vs KSP. Also balancing issues.

A Satellite minigame gets very repetitive quickly (with first 1,5 of play had to to it 4 times).
Also rewards for missions are very unbalanced vs the cost and risk of some of them, which will make you wait for months to gather money for a mission why AIs seem not limited by it.

oh ffs...

Summary of Hour 1:

---
00:05 - Looks like fun! Good UI, simple yet solid gameplay foundation, and plenty of nods to all the things that space nerds love. Nice!

00:45 - Wow, this is getting better by the minute! I'm not a fan of casual games but this one sure looks like a keeper!

00:51 - CATASTROPHIC GAMEPLAY FAILURE

The MHAIB (Mars Horizon Accident Investigation Board) later determined that the root cause of failure was the idiotic, tedious, completely awful minigame mechanic/gimmick that could not possibly be any worse.

---

But I'm not gonna refund just yet. I'm going to hang on for a week or so to see how the developer addresses this catastrophic game design failure.

If they promise to completely overhaul it, or if they promise strong mod support, I will keep it.

But if they don't then there is no way I could possibly keep this game, or indeed any game, with such unbelievably irritating nonsense totally ruining everything good about it.

Mars Horizon would be better if this horrible minigame was removed completely and replaced with an invisible RNG, that's how bad it is.

edit #1: After reading around on the forum for a while I found the developer stating that there is an in-game option to remove the minigames completely (even though I read all tutorials and tooltips and did not realize it). I am investigating this option and have asked the developer to clarify how it works and what future plans they have for this option and for the minigames themselves, and will update this review when I have these answers.

I was really enjoying this game for the first 5 hours, the tech race and decisions are very enjoyable. However 5-10 hours played it started to feel repetitive with everything being based around the same mini game with 1 different resource for each stage. I, now at 10 hours played can not face playing that mini game anymore. The same mini game played from the start for every launch but now takes longer and have to do multiples in a row to complete! Cannot recommend this game for worries of sanity risk!

I was at least hoping for a semi-in depth managent sim. What I got was a BARIS clone. And they added a mini game that has no logic inb why it's in there.

So far I have 14 hours into the game at the time of this review, a fresh pair of panties, and hypertension. Just one more... tur......

  • Graphics are fantastic
  • Smooth operation and learning tutorial
  • Not for under age of 12 years old, bit too advanced for under this age.
  • Few small non game breaking bugs, grammar, and what not. Nothing to get excited about.
  • FPS runs fine on a modern machine 2012 or better. Older and you may have some issues with processing of the information or video being smooth.
  • Challenging and heaps of content. (Over 50 hours making your investment at the time of this review, you will be paying $0.35 cents per hour of entertainment, a good deal based on current averages and its current sale price of $17.99)
  • With every load you shoot, you get more egar to get spread yourself to another planet.
  • (Get your mind out of the gutter... only we belong there!)
  • There are losses, explosions, testing, achievements, but nothing to get all drama about or over sensitive, thus the over 12 years in age statement.
  • No gore, no modding, no zombies, as of yet.
  • Customization to make your own agency!
  • Replay ability is a huge YES! <-- bigger than the yes we have here.
  • Building, Research, Development, and Growth with financial and time constraints.
  • Goes past Mars missions. How about solar system challenges.
  • If are first you do not succeed... blow things up again and again!
  • This is not Kerbal®
  • If you want Kerbal®.. then play freaking Kerbal®!
  • This is not Buzz Aldrin's® as well.
  • HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT CREEK!? I work with the team from Buzz Aldrin's®, and it is not the same. That should do it.... Hear me now... (mind blow)
  • Light serious race for the stars from 1952 onward. This built on games prior in the genre.
  • Turn based so there is no pressure, because there is much to do on a turn which is a month by game time.

Good game but every failure is soulcrushing... as I imagine how it is in real life space endeavors

Super easy to go to savescumming hell, if only to just keep yourself a hair's width further than your rivals. Game centres around exploration and management, only little to none of the former. You get to learn some cool things in spacepedia, but in the game itself there's very little mystery, unlike the real deal (at least up to the start of the 3rd era). Rarely get the sense of wonder that I'd expect from space stuff, but BOY do I get all kinds of senses of urgency and general stressing out. Playing on normal and I'm at my wit's end...

As for the good stuff, the mission planning feels really cool, and the nice overworld music changes as you go further in eras. The first few launches and tasks feel great and landing Soviets on the Moon is a dream come true. Honestly I wish there were no rival agencies (or no incentive to be the first to everything) and you were free to do stuff at your own pace... and maybe smoother transitions and overall a bit more polish.

Frankly I'm not enjoying this game as much as I'd like to, but this doesn't warrant a negative review, game's solid otherwise and I still wanna see it to the end. Though it might take away a year or two of my life expectancy lmao

I didn't think I'd be this into the game but it's very addicting. The tutorial is great and teaches you what you need then turns you loose to conquer space. You are in a race to beat other agencies but at the same time work with them. You have to balance research between 3 areas as well as watching your income while doing missions and requests. I can see there are a ton of options and various ways to play the game and am looking forward to playing this one for a while.

A pretty great game, waited for it since may and would say it kept up my interest to the very day of it's release which was today on 17/11/2020, I'd recommend the game to anyone who wants a good game about space exploration and going from the very start of human space travel to reaching Mars and making a human to step on the planet's surface.

It's casual, it's beautiful, it's educational. It sets you up for amazement, and it rips you apart with RNG. It has some of the complexity of a strategy game, for those that want to race, and the charm of interesting, but not too difficult puzzles in a beautifully crafted space game about managing your own space program. I believe any difficulty above Normal is not balanced correctly (now at launch), and I also see some great opportunities to expand to even more hardware, mechanics, and missions. I have a few concerns for replay value, and some ideas on how to help with that - but for the price point they've placed it at, it's a wonderful game. I recommend it.
