This sandbox and construction game comes with some humor, adorable details and some cool features. There is no need to learn a programming language but some rudimentary understanding of logic helps. Main Assembly's Tutorial is simply great, assisting you step by step with quite some fun. The possibilities for robots created are vast and rich, although there are few tools. I'm inclined to say, it's easy to learn and hard to master. The limit is your imagination and patience. Main Assembly deserves a try.

However, this is because I'm dumb, and if you're a person who plays a lot of building games or you have programming experience you probably won't care.
Beyond that, you just make cars and copters and boats, and then go around doing simple little challenges. There's a sandbox mode. There's a kind of freeroaming map or two with 45 stars (collectibles that unlock more parts for challenge mode). There's multiplayer so you can stab/smash/explode your friends. It's just like a really surprisingly competent physics platformer with vehicle construction. I know everyone says they want this kind of thing. Why has nobody played it?
It was fine. I finished as much as I wanted to finish after a couple days. Not a huge game, nor hugely replayable, unless you just love building stuff.

Cutesy funtimes ahead!
This is probably one of the most adorable games I've seen or played in my limited exposure to Steam so far.
You are, like with so many of these games, left to your own devices, though there are plenty of visual clues should you get stuck for something to do. I would definitely recommend starting with the tutorials in order to get the most out of this game. I didn't realise, right away, that I was being subconsciously taught programming so I'm looking forward to seeing how that progresses the deeper into this game I go.
I would recommend this game for children, although, some supervision might be necessary when it comes to programming the parts to get your creations to behave the way you want. My first car I actually ended up reversing the steering lol, so pressing left turned right and pressing right turned left!
I got this on sale at half the normal price and, though I've only played it twice, I've already got my money's worth out of it. Definitely!
If you like programming you like creating your own vehicles and then watching them succeed or fail depending on your skill, get this, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

No apparent way to make parts snap together.
No obvious way to tell if parts are touching or clipping.
Parts appear to be in the right place but clicking to place them inverts them after you click.
No way to move parts slightly after placing, you have to remove it and place again.
No multi-view to see if parts are aligned horizontally and vertically, you have to guess.
Sorry, but at this stage, the game is not viable in my view. It needs a lot of work and I may come back to it quite a bit later if these and other issues have been addressed. The game has promise, but after being burned with similar games being abandoned I won't chance it. If it had been further along in development, maybe.

Edit
After searching in the Steam Discussions I found out that it is a bug, the game isn't supposed to require an internet connection. The developers know about it but haven't fixed it yet.

Making cars and driving ends up being pretty annoying because of the problems with wheels.
Other than that, the freeform build system and programming let's you make things that would not be possible in other games.
Also, beware it appears that development on this game has stopped.

It basically feels like an early access game pushed out too soon. Many bugs, missing basic features. It constantly feels like you're fighting the game.
But it's a lot of fun.

Building in 3D can definitely be fiddly but there is a certain joy to the world and creations players can make that justify the investment into building them.

- In multiplayer this game crashes for at least one player every 1-2 minutes, usually when doing fairly normal things like moving a servo (even with nothing attached) or use the bend tool. This is with only two or three players, not huge servers.
- When melding the shape of chassis pieces the game fairly regularly twists the grid by 45 degrees for no reason, making it impossible to make the correct adjustment without deleting and rebuilding the plate.
- It has some extremely annoying behaviour with even the most basic designs, wheels will bounce and veer off course even on perfectly geometrically flat terrain making even the simplest cars completely unreliable without thruster assistance. I have no idea what the game wants me to do that might fix this, every workshop vehicle just uses internal thrusters to cheat the physics.
- There's very, very little to do. Bot Brawl doesn't seem to allow any real customization and there's a huge lack of weapons that aren't the smallest block size possible, world logic design is also very obtuse and isn't clustered in a UI like vehicles and is instead a bunch of floating blocks you must fly around to connect which is incredibly tedious.
It might one day be good, but this game is ABSOLUTELY still in fairly early Early Access and has absolutely no right to be calling itself a released product. Even the most basic behaviour for an engineering game will cause hard crashes and unpredictable physics anomalies.
I will change this review the absolute second I find any of these issues are fixed because this is absolutely fixable.

After an playing an hour to review for the Humble Choice April 2021 Bundle:
This is a creative game where the enjoyment that the game provides will be equal to how much effort players play into the game. Racing through the game in an hour showed me the depth of the systems here.
There’s a lengthy and interesting tutorial with a ton of extra challenges. A challenge mode with even more challenges but more freedom for players, and finally sandboxes which also allow players to create their content. But so much of the game is about building new vehicles, levels and accomplishing goals.
The controls and systems here are interesting and exciting. There’s a lot to learn and even quite a bit of programming in the form of wiring up your new vehicles to accomplish different goals. In some ways, this reminds me quite a bit of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, and it’s a comparison I like because both games give the player a lot of solid tools and interesting tasks.
Pick this up if you want to build, create, or even just explore other people’s work. However everything is more difficult than you might expect at first and while everything is achievable, there’s a large ramp-up time where players have to learn how to build, and then what to build before they have the freedom to build anything.

In addition, you can also complete challenges with which you can unlock parts and items for adding to your creations or simply in a sandbox mode where you also have all parts at your disposal.
In this sandbox mode you can also choose between a few different locations such as a very detailed landscape with a race track or the vacuum environment of space.
Yes, spaceships are also one of the possibilities that you can build and what is nice is that you can drive these vehicles online in these locations.
Main Assembly is a very user-friendly constructive racing / free-play game where the results can be infinite based on creativity and the building skills of the players.
You don't have to be a genius to build a working vehicle here, the basics are pretty straightforward but there are plenty of parts and features that can make the creations as complicated as you allow.
This is reflected in the many available vehicles on the steam workshop page, which certainly provide a lot of extra fun in Main Assembly.
Here's a little showcase of some of these fun vehicles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqoA2pPcIj4

If you decide to build something great or ambitious you will pull your hair out, break a few keyboards maybe even your screen.
Building something as simple as a small quad copter drone will break you.
There is this system in game called programming which is very simple in concept. It looks like when your using nodes in 3D modeling for shaders and such.
Here those nodes and their connections are controlling every aspect of your creation.
When I figured how much programming I have to do for something as simple as stabilising a drone I just gave up. I dont have that much time for something simple as hovering.
There is another similar game called Trailmakers Which solved this by simply give you the options on each part to set their controls to your liking and it works perfectly.
This whole programming is just way too complex and unnecessary.
(Side note I wanted to see how others solved the problems Im having to make helicopters and turns out they all used aerospace parts to stabilise even the smallest copters)

It can be hard to fine tune car setups and I wish there were more options, for instance speed of steering rotation. So far we can only affect the angle which feels a bit clumsy.
It would be nice also to have some kind of graph representation of the wheels setup so we don't have to tune every setting manually if we don't want to. For instance you would move a dot on the graph and it would give you the best average between acceleration and grip, without having to tune them separately and trying many times until you got a good setup. That kind of QoL changes would be amazing to be able to create vehicles a bit faster and more casual friendly. Oh and please let us flip back the car without exiting every time, it can be really frustrating if you have a setup that tends to flip too much and you don't feel like fixing it just for a specific level.
I haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but I noticed we can only play with friends. That's good, but once the game exits early access I would like for it to also have a matchmaking or lobby browser to be able to meet other players from the community, because i'ts kind of a niche genre and not everyone will have friends who are interested in this game.
Also I'm not really far in the game so I'm not sure which parts become unlockable, but I would absolutely die for a mechanical arm rotation that would help us create for instance a stair climber or a walking car as opposed to driving car haha.
The tutorial is good although I still don't understand how some nodes work, especially maths stuff and other abstract nodes. It would be nice to get examples of how to make more advanced stuff with them too, not just the basics.
I hope this was useful feedback, obviously it's still early access and the game is already really fun at this stage, so if you're interested in this concept, buy the game and help the developers :)
The game kinda reminds me of CATS (Crash Arena Turbo Stars) on android, except it's a lot more permissive, but I could see some features from CATS be implemented in this game for a lot of creative possibilities and fun.

But it is not intuitive and the ability to make shapes is destroyed by the main way you create and that is the (extruding tool).
If we could just draw a simple line on top of our shapes or make a simple box to add to our existing shapes it would have been so much better.

A great sandbox building game with a lot of creative freedom. From cars to planes to random as looking robots with legs. In solo, there is also a bunch of challenges which there are several of. You can also play online co op with friends which is great fun building robots together. Or making cars and use to them race each other. The steam workshop feature is also very cool, as you can create things and then share them with the community. There are some nicely designed ones already there to check out. Recommended to those into robotics and programming because that is the theme of the game. As well as those into sandbox games because building things here is only limited by your imagination. It is only in early access so far but is already quite fun, with much more features and challenges going to be added throughout.

It's in early access, and still has some bugs and quirks, but nothing that makes it unplayable. Missing features are a much bigger concern right now as of making something functional.
The sandbox functionality is incredible, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes programming and robotic games.
The learning curve is a little steep, but it isn't impossible. Considering that it is in early access it is quite playable.
As of Linux compatibility, it works out of box on Proton now. It didn't initially. Just don't enable Direct X 12 mode on the in-game options, which breaks the game on a lot of Windows systems too.

Let me explain, so first there is the programming, which is a really cool and easy to learn system where you can use stuff like averages, exponential curves and trigonometry to make cool builds, however there's close to no point in using these complex programming nodes as the aerodynamics system barely affects the vehicle (rendering stuff like active aerodynamics and air brakes useless, also i haven't been able to make a helicopter because of this) so my main gripe is that the aerodynamics are not strong enough (or they don't exist, however it says you can build planes and there is a helicopter in the cover art so i believe it exists to some extent)
i might just be doing it wrong but i havent noticed anything in the way of aerodynamics (i got the same lap times with a box as i did a aerodynamic car, and as i said i couldnt build a helicopter) so if any of you (including devs) could confirm this for me this would be great
But that's really the only thing that truly breaks the game for me. the building system takes a bit of time to learn but once you learn it it is really simple and honestly the best I've seen yet (kind of like a simplified version of blender which you make a car shape with and then stick wheels on and stuff) There also isn't much content in the game however its in early access so i cant complain (offline racing against bots would be nice, As well as leaderboards).
so to sum this up, this is a fun game with a building system which has the potential to be amazing, however the physics limit it a lot, and in this current state there isn't a massive amount of single player content (there's missions and a sandbox)

Note: if you prefer a game Brick Rigs, Simple Planes or Homebrew to a more simple building game, you might not like this game.
TL/DR: at this time, this is mostly a singleplayer game, IMO. Without collisions and weapons, the only thing left to do in multiplayer is racing (but again, with no collisions)
I am on the fence about this game still, but since it is early access and there is room and hope for improvement, I am recommending this game.
I find the game fairly polished, but missing features and content, which is to be expected for an early access game, but I have to mention it for people considering to buy the game.
Things that I find missing in this game:
-Rotation of parts (in all directions). This is a must for this type of game.
-Scaling of parts. Also elementary.
-Modding (at least being able to add maps).
-FOV slider. It's weird. There is an FOV slider for a camera part that you can attach to a vehicle, but no FOV slider for the general game. On larger screens, this is a problem.
-Collision in multiplayer (devs are working on it)
-Damage. IMO, this feature in any game makes a world of difference. Currently, damage is quite basic, but anything is better than nothing.
-Water physics (as far as I know, devs want to fix this)
Things that would be a welcome addition but are not critical:
-Weapons. Being able to do dogfights or tank battles in multiplayer would be great.
-A separate engine part instead of axles doubling as motors.
-A shorter tutorial. The current tutorial format is very long for the amount of info it contains.
Things I find great about this game:
-I can't really say why, but vehicle body construction is so damn intuitive and easy, you build fairly complex things in 5 minutes.
-Vehicle programmimg. A great feature that puts this game ahead of the rest of the vehicle building games. At the very least it alows you to assign any button to any part of your vehicle.
The potential is there! I am a big fan of Team17 and if they are publiahing this, I know it wont end up an unfinished product. The devs are in touch with the community, and are taking feedback.
A well known publisher combined with a dev that takes feedback is a winning combination. Keep up the good work!
