On the first try, along with finding (by myself without any spoilers) every: musical dolls, all notes, etc. It took me 3,5h to complete. Unfortunately, the difficulty of puzzles is at the preschool level. The intelligence of the opponents is not too high, which make the gameplay very easy. Most of the achievements are not a challenge (from the main game).
The challenges and achievements associated with them require a little bit more work, but nothing hard (
the only thing that matters is time, the shorter the better, and the amount of kill for final score
.
Is this game worth paying attention to? Yes, and no. Sadly steam doesn't have neutral opinion.
It has nothing to do with a horror genre. Just another walking simulator around the palace and its surroundings, with the possibility of running.
It is worth trying the challenges, because then the game takes on a new dimension. They are very similar to the resident evil ones, so that makes them pretty cool.

This game is visually gorgeous, the music is fantastic but for me that was a bout it.
At first Maid of Sker starts off with TONS of intrigue and promise but quickly turns into a a dull experience once you figure out how to safely maneuver around. I was hoping the story would make up for the gameplay but alas....the story was also very original and predictable.
This game is a strong strong solid 4/10 that left me WANTING the game to end way before it ever did.

“Every house has secrets”
~Victoria Schwab, Gallant
Ah, the new IPs... Gotta love 'em, right? When I was a kid, we rarely had sequels. Every new game was a surprise. We never knew what to expect from it. And it was, like, part of the fun. I mean, there's nothing wrong with the people who play Battlefield or Fortnite (or whatever else there is) every day and feel content. As long as they're happy, that's perfectly fine with me. But personally, I can't help but feel that the current generation of players is missing something really great. It's just people nowadays know exactly what to expect from a game long before they start playing it. Every single AAA title comes with tons of gameplay footage long before the release and it's not like there's a lot of space for expectations. I mean, seriously. What new could you expect from yet another Assassin's Creed or Final Fantasy 999: New Real Reborn RX Double: Definitive Edition HD? Sure, there are always indies, but... you know how it is about those. Those are great, but sometimes you just want something fresh that also looks cool on your big TV. Something that comes with both something new and a competitive picture. Even if we're talking about the AA level. A game that you pick up just because you liked the title and ended up being surprised in a good way. I totally miss such stuff. That's why I always feel thankful for games like Maid of Sker. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start from the beginning.
What is Maid of Sker exactly? Maid of Sker is a first-person horror adventure with action and stealth elements. Technically, there are quite a lot of “walking sim” elements, but... I can't call it like that. Personally, I'm a huge hater of “walking sims” (always end up bored to death). And even though Maid of Sker does incorporate quite a lot of those “walk and watch” mechanics, it does it totally right. All those walks and movie-like sequences are used to create the atmosphere. To make you feel scared. In the best way possible (strange sounds, blinking light, that kind of stuff). Remember the old adventure game called Scratches? That's pretty much what I'm talking about. I'm not trying to compare the gameplay, of course, these two are totally different games, I'm talking about the fact that there aren't many things to interact with. Most of the time you'll be just walking around and looking for things. But. Unlike our usual “walking sims”, Maid of Sker includes quite a lot of proper gameplay mechanics. In other words, you'll never just walk around. There'll always be something.
First of all, there's stealth. See, in this game? There are no weapons. Well, technically there's a special FPS mode that offers you some basic shooting fun, but that's a different story. In the main game there are no weapons and that's it. And the funniest thing is – your enemies won't see you. Remember A Quiet Place movies? The ones with the evil aliens who tracked people by sound? That's exactly what we've got here. You run, you bump into the furniture – they'll hear you. And when they'll hear you... let's just say you won't want that. And to make things worse – the game takes place in the old mansion (technically – a hotel, but whatever), where there's a lot of dust in the air. And when there'll be dust, your character will sneeze. Ouch. So, what do you do? First of all – you move slowly and you listen. And when there are enemies nearby, you move even slower and you hold your breath (right trigger on your gamepad). You can also use the environment to trick the enemies. Make a distraction and while enemies will look for the source of the sound, use that time to run away. Finally, in the second half of the game you'll get a handy device that'll be able to stun enemies (remember Ferengi from Star Trek and their main weakness?), but every use will require a special cartridge and those'll be pretty hard to find, so-o-o... Yeah. Walk slowly and don't make any sounds. Or else.
Another thing about Maid of Sker is Resident Evil-like level design. Well, the old mansion (I know, I know, it's a hotel), keys, some basic puzzles that involve looking for certain items... you know. The Resident Evil stuff. When it's about level design and exploration, you can call this game “Resident Evil Lite”. Especially since Resident Evil started to do first-person stuff since its seventh main installment too. Thankfully, its own unique mechanics prevent this game from getting “AA Resident Evil rip-off” aftertaste. And another one of such things is... multiple endings. Technically, there's nothing new about those. At the end of the story, the game just determines how good you did and gives you one of the two endings. Good or bad, that's pretty much it. Again, pretty Resident Evil-like, but the way this game wants us to unlock the good ending... Let's just say it fits. To finish this game, you'll need to collect four brass cylinders. But to get the good ending, you'll also need to collect four music sheets. Which means one thing – more exploration. Sounds boring, but with pretty much every room in this game presenting a certain kind of challenge (traps, puzzles, locked doors, stealth, every room in this game feels different) and some actions will even have consequences... Like I said, such an approach fits perfectly. Even though there isn't much stuff here (Maid of Sker is a pretty short game that can be finished in only four hours as long as you know exactly what to do), everything here has a purpose. It's one of those games that have that certain handmade aftertaste and it feels really, really good.
Looks solid too. It's far from being a AAA experience, but still, backgrounds here look pretty charming. The story isn't that great, though. Can't argue with that. It's yet another one of those stories, in which the guy comes to a spooky mansion (don't... say anything, I know it's a hotel, lol) to save his beloved one. There's nothing else here. Just that. And it's probably the worst thing about this game. Seriously, getting something like that in 2020? Feels like a sad joke. AMBER: Journeys Beyond, Echo Night#2, Silent Hill 2... Don't know 'bout you, guys, but personally, I'm totally tired of such stuff and was really disappointed to get exactly that in Maid of Sker. On the other hand, though, the deep atmosphere that incorporates a lot of elements from classic horror novels sure compensates for that. Lovecraftian cult, family secrets, 19th century, real influences (the game is somewhat inspired by R. D. Blackmore's 1972 novel of the same name, and even though technically, it's a totally different story with different characters and motif, you can see where that family stuff came from), nods to folklore (even though the game takes place in a fictional place, it's a direct nod to Sker House in Wales and local folklore)... All that sure helps you to make peace with the lack of complicated story.
So... yeah. The Maid of Sker is a totally underrated title. The one that deserves way, way more attention. It's not the next big thing, it's not a groundbreaking experience and it sure needs better story, but if you want a good horror? Here it is. Here's a very good horror for you. With competitive AA visuals, deep atmosphere and juicy gameplay mechanics. And they only ask $24.99 for it. Not only I enjoyed this game, it's one of those rare cases, in which I can say that the game is worth buying for its full price. In other words, I totally recommend it to all horror fans. Pretty nice surprise, huh? Man, I love it when such things happen. Dixi.

So the good parts:
- Atmosphere
- Minimum amount of jump scares. Everything is holding up on a cat and mouse chase (imaging Coma only instead of one hunting teacher there are a lot of them on every map) and tension
- Very nice graphics
- Smart approach to reusing areas
- As I mentioned previously rather unique lore origin for entire situation
The not so good parts:
- Yes, there are a lot of hunters, but on normal they're are kinda... harmless for the most parts. Unless you're in full sprint mode and do some basis sneaking - chances are you'll never trigger a hunt
- In at least 2 cases in the game when you unlock a door to an exit sooooooomehow EEEEEEVERY enemy on a level know your precise location (even if you haven't made a noise yet) and will rush towards you. Those 2 sections are extremely annoying and feels like a massive fuck you to those who are trying to get that trophy for not-hit run. Not good. Very very not good.
Overall - nice horror game and if you're missing out on some good horror which is not unity assets store repurchase - this game is for you!

I played through on the normal difficulty which honestly was probably the best choice for a first playthrough. The enemies have a predictable reaction to most things (which I imagine scales with difficulty) so once you get an idea how they work, it becomes quite easy to navigate around them (be that a good thing or bad thing is up to you). The manual save feature is a bit tedious, but being that the map shows where the save rooms are, it isn't too hard to finagle your way over. (However, actually remembering to save after you've done 45 minutes worth of progress is another story lmao)
I think my biggest complaint is being that the monsters are sound based and are ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE, you basically spend the whole game crouching. Thomas' poor knees!! And for some reason, just the act of standing makes them freak out. They can't hear you open and close this huge creaking metal door, but they can hear your clothes rustle as you teabag four rooms over. I can only imagine how that works at the higher difficulties.
All that considered, though, the game is still very enjoyable as a horror experience. Especially with Abraham and his sick techno beat footsteps.

You could even turn the enemies off, but I recommend not to do that, on the easiest difficulty they are already very easy to avoid and deal little damage, and there exists no challenge or tension without them.
So finish it at least once, and then come for the main event:
Challenge mode, where a greater variety of enemies exists and you are equipped with firearms.
That should have been the main game quite honestly.

+ Uhh...

- Enemies are ludicrously easy to avoid
- Low challenge, easy in general
- Half the achievements are just for collectables
- Nonsensical plot
- Dull and generic aesthetic
- Just isn't scary at all
- Very easy to get bored
Don't bother.

The stealth sections can be tedious (most of the game is sneaking around), I never actually got annoyed about it. There's also the option to turn the difficulty down which does make the stealth sections much more tolerable. Yes, you'll still be sneaking everywhere but the detection meters of the enemies are far less frustrating.
Definitely recommended.

The element of fear in the game, as in Outlast 1, is the human-like beings who used to be human and changed as a result of experiments. These beings cannot see you, they can only hear you, so you usually have to bend over and close your mouth, moving quietly. This slows the flow of the game a little. So it doesn't involve much action. Although it may seem difficult at first, once you grasp the artificial intelligence of the beings, you can easily pass by them. There is a little Jump-scare. The horror dose of the game seems to be gradual. In other words, you may not be afraid for the first 1-2 hours at the beginning of the game, but as you go to the 1st, 2nd floor of the hotel, they increase the dose of fear a little more.
There are puzzles in many places. Some of these puzzles are more like ciphers, and I couldn't find any clues to solve them. Since I could not always enter and pass random passwords, I had to pass by watching videos. Some puzzles are actually very easy, but the solution may not come to mind. So the time you will spend on puzzles will vary.
The soundtrack of the game is very good. I especially loved the song playing somewhere. Its subject already includes some music. In other words, those who are interested in music will encounter a lot of musical terms and instruments in the game. Sounds designed to create tension are also quite successful.
It has two different endings. After finishing one ending, you can play the other ending from the last recording zone.
There is no automatic recording system or you cannot save yourself whenever you want. You can record your game by means of musical instruments called phonographs. I can hear you say what has to do with it, but they did so: D By the way, the rooms with the phonographs are quite safe, and you can relax.
In summary I liked the game. I recommend for those who love horror. If the second game is done, will I buy it and play? Yes.

First the playtime is just about 4-5 H so not really long and i found 90% of all stuff you can find .
It is NOT really a horror game i only got scared one time .
Its more like an Atmospheric Adventure Puzzle game while avoiding Enemy,s that cant,t see you only hear you and there KI is not the best too
It is not challenging at all
The puzzles are mostly easy too only one got me stuck for few min .
The Enemy,s are also very easy to avoid as long you don,t run you can sneak around 2 cm next to them as they can,t see you . So it,s NOT a horror game
But i still kind of liked it exploring the Hotel solving the Puzzles
If you really wanna spend 25 $ i don,t know i would wait for sale i got it on sale for 15 $ i feel that,s an ok price but 25 $ i would not buy

the challenges presented with the latest update carries a more fun experience with more interesting enemies and arsenal to use , which i personally had fun with more than main game, these things should have been used in the main game to make it better and not sticking with the (avoid and hide) boring formula which tons of horror games uses these days.
in the end i don't recommend against it but i would say wait for a reasonable discount (50% or more) if you are a fan of this genre.

Complaints would be the usual, like why wouldn't I just climb over furniture blocking my path in a corridor rather than go out through the entire frickin' gardens, that is crawling with enemies, but hey, game logic. They somewhat counter that by giving you a little bit more access through vents and unlocking doors from the other side further on in the game.
Most puzzles are alright. At one point you need to pull two levers at opposite side at the top floor of a library to open a cabinet in the middle of the bottom floor, and I thought I had experienced a bug because only one of my levers would respond. I read I needed to interact with the door that they unlock in between pressing them which was quite a hassle with the enemies patrolling and the layout of the area, and there was nothing telling me I needed to do this. Otherwise most things were pretty intuitive.
One or two times I was confused to the point of resorting to a guide or forums. A bit too much backtracking for me personally to play through several times for 100% I think, but all in all pretty good.

Maid of Sker has a good story. I believe the game had a pretty good story all things considered. The game gives you context of what happened and how it got to the point where you show up through saving.
Cons:
I didn’t think the game was too scary. When I look at the monsters in this game I see they are trying to go for a twist on the normal human figure by making them faceless. Honestly that’s not enough for me as the only thing messed up is their face. Even their clothes aren’t even too damaged plus one has a top hat I don’t find that terrifying in the slightest. Also it’s pretty easy to get away from the monsters.
Maid of Sker is also more of one and done type of game. If you are the type that wants more out of the game after completing it you won’t get that here.
Personally I recommend it for the narrative, but I can understand if you don't want it because of the price.

TL;DR - Great visuals, great atmosphere, intriguing story but ultimately a tedious experience let down by the actual gameplay.
This is a wonderfully looking, exquisitely sounding game that is let down by one major issue - The gameplay loop is repetitive and kinda boring. I honestly think it would be better experienced on ‘Safe Mode’ without enemies just to enjoy the atmosphere and story. But for that I wouldn’t pay the full price.
THE GOOD
You can tell a lot of work has gone into this. The flavour is a little different, with some Welsh folklore and Greek Myths weaved through. Elements from staple Horror titles, such as Resident Evil and Amnesia have been borrowed and utilised well. This creates a world that feels real and immersive. I loved the environments, the lighting and particularly the sound.
If you are new to the Horror genre of games then this may well give you a frightening experience.
THE BAD
Whilst the opening hour or so is great and sets a tense atmosphere and an intriguing story sadly any moderate to veteran Horror player is going to quickly work out that the enemies use pretty basic patterns and aren't threatening.
You are often forced into situations where you have to wait for enemies to move slowly through their patrol routes so you can grab an objective. I believe the idea of this was to generate tension and unpredictability but it just becomes kinda tedious. There is very little variety to shake this up. You can see what they were trying to attempt with the Boss fights but in execution they are laughable, particularly the last one.
The ‘Hold Breath’ mechanic is a nice idea but it didn’t do much for me. At times it was an irritation as I would use it to allow an enemy to pass me by but many times they would just stop next to me, at which point I can’t move and they won’t move. So the breath eventually runs out and I’m forced to run, but not out of fear, more necessity. Which is another sad note - The enemies, when alerted are not frightening at all. They hiss and give you a few slaps if they can catch you, but once you work out that they can’t enter save rooms the whole thing becomes an exercise in timing and patience.
Whilst the world itself is wonderfully atmospheric I found that there is little in the way of extras to find to reward exploration. There are some notes but mostly the story is told through the Homophones found in every save room that are visible on the map. So honestly there isn’t a massive amount of incentive to explore. Yes, there’s the Music Doll collectables but in a game like this those are just padding for a little extra play time.
Honestly, I just can't recommend it because I found myself relieved when the whole thing was over.
THE UGLY
That dog was definitely finished last thing on a Friday before deadline.

The story is a bit bananas and it's well told /for the most part/ the voice acting it's fine, and the music is quite good.
the game is short, and the gameplay loop is decent, It would have been a blast to play 10 years ago.
7/10

Although I’m big on horror, I’ve been running through an unlucky string of subpar titles that have disappointed me lately. I’m always on the lookout for a new Outlast (1 or 2), Resident Evil 7, or The Cat Lady, though it seems that they’re in short supply these days. If anyone has any good recommendations for me, I’m all ears!
Maid of Sker is the latest in my quest to find the next great horror game. While I can’t say that it’s an instant classic that immediately carved out a place in my heart, I can say that it’s good overall and easily one of the better titles in the genre in the last couple of years.
Hugs and Kisses
Maid of Sker begins with you arriving at the Sker Hotel after receiving a letter of distress from that special lady in your life. Odd events seem to have transpired though, as everything is in disrepair, everyone that you meet seems to be insane and inflicted by some kind of supernatural blindness, and your girlfriend has tucker herself away into a safe hiding spot in the attic that is surprisingly inconvenient to get to. You’ll have to use your head if you’re going to make it out of the other side of this nightmare with it still attached to your shoulders.
Keys, Switches, and Distractions
Progression requires you to explore a variety of locations while avoiding plenty of hazards and solving puzzles as you do. Hazards are more often than not the masked and brainwashed residents of the hotel. Although their inability to see can be used to your advantage, they’re highly sensitive to sound and you’ll need to keep that in mind or you’ll be spending plenty of time running away from them. Sneaking around is important to avoid their attention and keeping an eye out for noisy items that can be stepped on or bumped into is a must; there’s plenty of opportunities for the environment to mess up your near-perfectly executed ninja maneuvering, some of which is mandatory to move forward. TThese triggers can include anything from powering up machinery to dusty air that will make you cough if you happen to take in a lungful. For the former, always have an exit strategy helps, especially since there are no quick hiding spots, like lockers or under desks from other games. For the latter, the ability to hold your breath offers more advantages than you would think.
See the Sights, Walk the Halls
Maid of Sker’s greatest strength is its atmosphere. There’s usually a sense of tension as you explore, though it does tend to dissipate once you’re passing through areas that you’ve scouted out before. Enemies mostly follow predetermined routes that make them easy to avoid once you’ve had an eye on them for a few moments. Once you’ve gotten a hang of the controls, you’ll likely be navigating like a pro, only alerting the enemies when you get a little too arrogant and happen to run into one that’s been added in or had its route changed thanks to your progression. To top this off, you end up with a weapon that can be used against these masked lunatics that overwhelms their senses and makes them no threat whatsoever for noticeably longer than it would take you to escape. It uses ammo that you could quickly burn through if you were using it all the time, but the combination of healing tonics and easily avoided enemies tends to mean that you’ve got plenty to spare as long as you’re playing it safe.
The environment itself is impressive. It’s not only enjoyable to see as you explore, but it captures the era of the setting near-perfectly. The architecture, decorations, and technology really pushed it to the point of feeling much different from many of its horror peers. Even the short conversations that you have with your lady friend skillfully brought the setting to the forefront.
Puzzles are frequent and tend to be fairly straightforward. I only ended up stuck for more than a few seconds a couple of times throughout my playthrough. I don’t get much of a thrill of being bogged down when I want to be experiencing the tension of horror so I’d rather puzzles were too simple rather than too complex, though puzzle fanatics will likely not find themselves pushed anywhere near their limits here. I’d classify this as a horror adventure rather than a horror puzzler, for sure.
Verdict
As far as recent horror releases go, Maid of Sker is easily one of the better ones. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the narrative, though the gameplay was a bit on the lighter side. I felt a continual sense of curiosity throughout, though the apprehension and dread that I was hoping for never really hit me as hard as I would’ve liked. It’s a middle ground between walking simulator, action/stealth, and puzzle varieties of horror, though it succeeds in performing admirably in each category.
All in all, Wales Interactive put together a solid experience that I could see most horror fans enjoying, even if it may not be the next great classic that defines the genre for years. I’m glad that I played it and recommend it to those who are looking for enjoyable titles in a genre that needs more reliably good titles. Just be aware that it can be beaten in three to four hours on your first go.

If your into stealth games like THIEF especially the 1990's original and puzzle solving walking simulators with a good story then this is game you will probably enjoy. Am more of a extreme horror and gore wrapped around a good story kind of gamer in the style of the old PHANTASMASGORIA, CLIVE BARKER'S UNDYING, PT Demo, INFLICTION etc.
Its obvious the Devs and everyone else involved went all out to make this as enjoyable experience in unrelenting terror with much passionate and skill. So if the above is your cup of maggot filled thickly rotted tea do not hesitate to purchase your pleasure of dark delight.
MAID OF SKER, BUY IT! PLAY IT! Play a terrifying heart squeezing til it oozes blood game of hide and seek with things no longer of this world.

- Graphics are good and I enjoyed the setting.
- Music and sound design are one of the best aspects of this game.
Meh
- Story was promising but as I finished the game, I ended up wishing for more. Since the game is pretty short it all goes by really fast. I wish it was a little bit longer so that there could be more story development.
Cons
- Enemies are dumb and very easy to elude (I played it on hard mode.) Either you wait for them to move and hold your breath while they're next to you or you can easily outrun them if you're not patient and don't want to wait for the perfect moment to walk by them.
- Puzzles are very easy.
- Not scary at all.
Conclusion: I enjoyed the game even with all its cons. I liked the atmosphere and setting the most, and maybe that's what carried the game for me. If you're expecting a scary game then this is NOT the game for you. I would classify this game as a very easy and short puzzle game with barely any survival horror aspects. But still, I enjoyed it despite the flaws.

The visuals are beautiful, with detailed, intricate environments that are a pleasure to explore.
The audio (which is critical in a game like this) is also quite excellent, featuring lovely background music and tense, realistic sound effects.
Without spoiling anything, the story is intriguing. It's compelling enough to drive you to progress forward to find out what's really going on at the hotel and what happened to the family who own it.
As far as the gameplay goes, it's a fairly simplistic case of wandering the halls of the hotel, finding items and completing puzzles, attempting to avoid the various enemies along the way. You will need to be as quiet as possible, as the enemies are sensitive to sounds specifically. Crouching around and holding your breath will become a frequent necessity.
If I have anything negative to add, it may be that the enemies aren't quite as dangerous as I thought they would be, or as sensitive to the noises. Honestly though, this might be because I'm playing on Normal rather than Hard difficulty, so take that with a pinch of salt.
I'm having a lot of fun playing through this, and I hope many others do as well.
