Willkommen in der neuen satirischen Fantasywelt! Übernehme die Rolle eines Zauberers und werde Mitglied eines heiligen Ordens. Folge deinem Auftrag und halte den bösen Zauberer auf, der die Welt ins Chaos stürzt und dessen widerliche Kreaturen die Kräfte des Guten bedrängen. A short review for this game: This game crashes more than the DAX on the stock exchange. Also a few Achievements are weird bugged, like only Host gets the achievement or only just one person.. Well otherwise the game would be more funnier xD

ich fand's richtig gut

tolle Musik, witzige Story, OP und squishy Zauberer
auch die deutsche Übersetzung war hier sehr gelungen
kann mich erinnern dass ich ne zeitlang ASF oder ASA gedacht hab als ich RL zu Fuß unterwegs war und es mir zu lang gedauert hat

auf der Empfehlungsskala von -100% (absolut nicht) über 0% (egal) zu 100% (ausgezeichnetes Spiel) bekommt es von mir 90%

Ein tolles Spiel für einen entspannten Multiplayer-Party-Abend. Leider scheint es unter Win 10 nicht mehr möglich zu sein das Spiel ohne Abstürze zu spielen. Ab der Mitte des Spiels lässt sich der Spielstand überhaupt nicht mehr laden. Sehr schade.

Wer hat sich den hier her verlaufen?

Ehhh und du möchtest was zu Magicka erfahren?

Okay.. Was kann ich dir darüber erzählen.. Natürlich empfehle ich es, dass ist natürlich für mich nicht verhandelbar.
Es war mein aller erster Kauf auf Steam und ich verbinde eine schöne Zeit mit dem Spiel, es besitzt eine wirklich humorvolle Ader und macht als Gruppe unglaublich viel Spaß. Lachanfälle, Chaotische Monsterhorden und Unfälle in der man sein Kameraden umbringt, sind Kostenlos darin enthalten und auch der aller freundlichste Zauberer, kann seinen Zauberer Begleiter Wiederbeleben (Um ihn nochmal zu verhauen, sollte er es nicht zu schätzen Wissen. Wozu belebt man die anderen auch sonst?).

Als Zauberer beherrscht man viele Elementarzauber und kann diese miteinander Kombinieren, es lässt sich sozusagen einiges herum Experimentieren (Auf eigene Gefahr). Andere Zauber erlernt man auf seiner Reise und kann auch einige finden, also haltet eure Augen offen. Geheimnisse gibt es auch und viele verschiedene Waffen und Rüstungen. Die Geschichte ist auch sehr schön gemacht worden, natürlich mit einen hauch von Witz versteht sich. Aber obwohl die Macht eines Zauberer unglaublich groß zu scheinen mag, haben sie eine große schwäche. Schon beinahe gemein.. Da können sie nicht einmal Schwimmen! XD

Es bietet dir auch einige Errungenschaften die dich bestimmt auf Trap halten werden. Oh.. Und es gibt dlc's die eine ganz neue Geschichte erzählen, eine davon erinnert mich sehr an Castlevania (Die ich leider noch nicht besitze. >.< ). Aber auch komplett neue Roben die eigene Vor und Nachteile mit sich bringen. Das schöne an Magicka ist auch, das es nicht nach paar Stunden durchgespielt ist und sollte das nicht reichen, könnt ihr euch mit anderen Zauberer in der Arena messen.

Hurraa! Magie in einer Arena, da kann ja nichts schief gehen.

Also wie gesagt, ich empfehle es und würde es jeder Zeit erneut spielen. Aber beherzigt meinen Rat, als Gruppe ist es zum schreien. ;)

Magicka ist ein lustiges Koop Game, zu 4. ist es ein richtiges Gewusel. Der Soundtrack, die Grafik und die Spielmechaniken sorgen immer wieder für Spaß. Man kann viele Zauber mehr oder weniger gut miteinander kombinieren um noch mächtigere Spells zu erzeugen. Leider ist bei ist bei einem Story Boss ein Bug drin, dass man das nicht beenden kann. Bis dahin war es aber ein sehr unterhaltsames Spiel!

Was going to get into this game again with a couple of friends and was surprised by the sheer amount of crashes the game had. It made it nigh impossible to just enjoy ourselves with having to restart the game repeatedly for an hour before we gave up. The game itself is fun but in its current build simply isn't worth it.

The game is fun at first, but this game is very prone to crash, which is exacerbated when playing with friends.
But if you and three other friends are very patient, this game might be for you, but as for me, the game lost most of its steam at the halfway point, with the technical issues being insult to injury.

If you have a friend its infinite revives, in my case... I have none. Even Death doesnt want to be my friend. :c
The story is ridiculous, SURPREDO~ is still the best stuff ive heard an NPC say.

This game is the jankiest Harry Potter meets Wizard 101 Wattpad fanfic I've ever been exposed to. The only good thing I have to say about this game is that the characters and monsters are provocative. The game tends to crash mid-cut scene, making the audience feel as what only could be described as the experience of opening the refrigerator at quarter to midnight in hopes to secretly consume the remainder of your leftover chicken fritters from Texas Roadhouse only to find that they are not there and your uncle Tim, who happens to be staying on your parents couch for a couple of nights after being evicted from his apartment in NYC because of multiple noise complaints, snuck into your stash and devoured it like a cold-hearted monster.
I would definitely recommend this game to anyone. Escapism. De-Realization. Numbness.

Back in the early days of this game only one person needed to own the DLC for 4 people to play it, now it's been retroactively changed so that all parties need to own it. I love the game, but I can't recommend it because of these awful, anti-consumer practices. Don't support Paradox, they went from a pretty good company to a god awful one.

Another non-working game to uninstall !
$team sure is laughing all the way to the bank.
This game was fine back when I bought it.
I liked playing the arena challenges because you can just jump in & play casual without any story or whatever.
But now apparently the devs destroyed it, the game just crashes constantly & they aren't fixing it. Reminds me of my copier.

A personal favorite.

You'll need fast fingers for this one. As a wizard, you have access to eight elements of magic bound to eight keys on your keyboard; this setup gives you the feeling that you're really working with the magic as a wizard might. You construct your spells in real time, and you can just as easily set yourself aflame as blast an enemy with a healing ray. My only complaint is that some combinations are far and away more powerful than others, so once you discover them you'll be relying on them a lot and that moves you away from the fun experimentation core to the early game.

Remember people, the spell to revive is life+lightning. WA spacebar. Know it well, because this is Magicka and you will be dying. A lot. Usually to your friends. But with such an easy way to come back, repeatedly, that's less of a hindrance and more of a feature - I can't quite remember all the times playing this game that my friends and I would get stuck in loops of just trying to kill each other over and over for a laugh. The game is great, and I cannot recommend it highly enough if you have friends you can reliably play with.

Yo magicka is a classic. It's kind of jank but that's part of the charm. Play it co op or don't play it at all. Friendly fire is highly encouraged. Make the hilarious stupid mines that blast the enemy off of the screen. Use the dumb items. Kill your friends. Cast the greatest spells of all time. Use all of your intellect to be stupid. Tongue-in-cheek RPG, where you play a wizard. Who has to save the world, or at least make it stable and unchanging. Oh, and it has an Old Norse flair, down to the language that is spoken. Decent. Suggest waiting for a discount before getting all the DLCs, though.

Garbage that will crash your computer every few minutes but the BEST part is you cant CLOSE it when it crashes, it takes over your entire screen until you restart your pc. I've owned this game for a very long time and at first it was fine (where my hours come from) but now it's unplayable trash. Spend your money elsewhere.

First Impressions

I've been aware of Magicka (MA) ever since I created a Steam account, but instead of buying it, I wound up making a trade for it. Despite being 10 years old as of 2021, the gameplay mechanic of mixing together 8 types of magic (earth, fire, life, cold, arcane, shield, lightning, and water) into a wide range of spells and abilities was really interesting to me. In theory it's kind of a straightforward concept, but isn't utilized very often, as many games emphasize specialization of one skillset at a time. Since it has local coop available, I first tried MA out with a friend, and realized we might be more of a hindrance to each other than aid.

Gameplay

I expected MA to play somewhat like an RPG, in that I thought I'd get XP and gain levels, not in order to obtain higher level spells, but to increase stats like my HP and defense. After all, almost everything else about MA is like an RPG, as you talk with NPCs, seek out hidden goods, and fight enemies that get progressively stronger. However, your stats are static throughout all 12 chapters of MA. One thing that can change is when you find equipment that enemies drop, which can have passive and active effects on them, with my favorite doubling my HP. The downside is that if you die and reload from an earlier checkpoint, you'll lose any equipment you found along the way. So, in theory you'll never be stronger than how you first start the game, but that doesn't mean you'll only use a small handful of spells the entire time.

As a new player what prevents you from stringing together the most potent spells possible is ignorance, with MA occasionally teaching you new spells throughout the adventure. For instance, the haste spell you acquire early on so you can move a lot faster. Being shown these different combinations and possibilities encourages your own creative blends and applications, which really suits the concept of a new wizard experimenting with their craft. Although each element has an opposite it can't combine with, your only limitation is your own imagination and trial and error. The dwarves that hurl boulders at you is a close second though.

Controls

When trying the game out with my friend, we were both using controllers, and though the game functions with them, it's not the ideal set-up. In order to select one of the eight elements, you have to push the 'R joystick' in one of the four cardinal directions, which brings up a mini-menu with two elements to pick from, and flicking the joystick in the respective direction will select the corresponding element. This action is a bit delayed, even if you have all of the element locations memorized, so making any combination is cumbersome and time-consuming. Conversely, if using the mouse and keyboard, each element is only a single input away, meaning that it's much easier to combine them while in combat, which is when the controller really betrays the player. In this case, M&K works much better.

Story

Something you'll notice about MA's story is that it's not overly serious. In fact, amongst all of the NPC deaths, a few pop culture references, the nonsensical spoken language, and Death being a travel agent, the tone of MA is brazen to say the least. With many RPGs taking themselves so seriously, the sense of humor here is a nice change of pace. Plus, as you progress in the game, it does build into a respectable adventure. I'm still waiting for my life to do that.

Visuals

The perspective of MA takes place from overhead, at a far enough distance that it's hard to make out many details about specific characters or enemies. That's a small drawback for being able to see enemies approaching from a distance though. In spite of the game's age, the graphics still hold up pretty well. Environments are composed of fairly simple areas, such as a meadow cut across by a stream or various castles, but enough care was put in so that locations don't look bland or lifeless.

Sound Design

Based on the flippant writing, one might expect the music to be a farce as well. However, it's made up of really solid, medieval sounding tracks that invigorate a player's sense of going on an epic quest. It's not only a couple of songs that are like this either, as most of them have striking, dramatic instrumentals that build up a sense of adventure. There aren't unique sound effects for all of the spells possible, but certain results do, such as when an enemy is frozen or gets burnt alive. They work pretty well in the game, and I wasn't aware of any annoying noises.

Pros

???? If you play with someone else who has a good grip on the game, you can work together in ways not possible by yourself. For instance, crossing two different kinds of beams together and reflecting them at enemies. Plus, while in coop mode, you can revive other players and avoid being defeated, unlike in single-player mode.
???? There's a decent amount of checkpoints available in each chapter, which is rather useful with some of the more difficult sections in the game.

Cons

❌ Spells don't stay mixed together for very long, even if they're actively being used. It means you'll have to remix them multiple times, and doing so while under attack can be a daunting thing to pull off.
❌ It can be harder than you might think to fight against mobs of enemies, since you have to juggle between offensive and defensive magic, as well as keeping the right elements in mind.
❌ The base game is priced quite reasonably for only $10, but all of the DLC available for the game winds up costing around $60.

Tips

???? If you find a spell that's particularly useful, you might want to write the combination down so you don't forget it. Without question, you'll want to have one or two healing and shield spells memorized. Also, although you can just look up the most powerful and useful spells in advance, I'd suggest playing blind for a while and trying things out on your own first. A few combinations I liked were [spoiler]casting EDDDD on myself, and hitting enemies with ASSSR, SDSDR, and SDSDF[/spoiler].
???? When enemies get too close, you can be hit by the effects of your own spells, so you'll always need to be moving away to maintain enough distance.

Final Thoughts

There's a reason why so many people from my friends list have played this game before, as it's a classic that doesn't break the bank to acquire. However, I can understand why some of the mechanics aren't replicated by other games. Mixing elements together is fun, but with eight to choose from, there's far more combinations available than any person would ever use regularly or bother to memorize. What's the point in adding so many possibilities, when few players will ever go very far with them? The control scheme and need to mix them together manually so often doesn't help the problem either.

MA winds up being pretty difficult, but I don't dislike it as much as I might otherwise, because it fits the lore of wizards so well. Although they have powerful magic, if you rush them with melee strikes or spam them, their usefulness decreases dramatically. In order to beat MA, not only do you have to weave powerful spells to counter particular enemies, you also have to overcome the inherent weaknesses a wizard would deal with. It's a pain, but when you learn how to handle these flaws and can counter with devastating spells, it's quite a lot of fun, and is something I'd recommend trying.

Magicka exists today as a weird meme time capsule with fun gameplay, when it works. There's some actual good jokes in here, and some clever fights, but its not remotely stable enough to play multiplayer, and that's the only real way to play this.

Crashes during gameplay, during level transitions, during loading screens, soft locks that make you have to restart your computer, there's an impressive variety of ways the game can break while you try to play it. What makes it worse is all of the DLC which shows that the priority wasn't in making a stable video game.

Cant recommend this, the crashing issues seem worse NOW than when I first got it, despite the patches, and I don't see it getting fixed. Hopefully Magicka 2 works.

Twee? Certainly. Deep gameplay and a lot of fun with friends? Doubly so. Like a party game but not shallow. A shocking amount of personality, and rye dry humor, make it a very Scandinavian, a rare treat we need more of. Worth every bit of 10$ anytime, but vote for a sale as it often is on sale, to get a small game out there more, or buy 4 copies and gift to friends so can live in the past with this great game that you missed.

What is Magicka ?

Despite being a fine-looking and cheap indie game that is easy to get into, after playing this one for a while, personally, just personally, I felt like this isnt a game that I'd recommend because I didnt have much fun with it, the coolest thing this game has going on for it is its spell system that can be creatively explored and that is surely something that I'd wish I could see being done in another game but here taking that cool aspect aside we have a very generic, average game with bland visual style set on bland levels followed by even more bland enemies, despite the cool mechanic they created here with the spell system the game doesnt add enough new stuff to fight off the eventual repetitivity that plagues its gameplay and with each level you doing nothing more than fighting enemy encounters over and over and they getting even more cheap as you go it just feels like a game that will burn you out pretty fast, there isnt even a good story to accompany this game with either to at least motivate the player not that its necessary but something more of a substance could have helped.

By the end of the day here each level consists of just giving you nonstop enemy encounters that later feels unbalanced and exaggerated like throwing 20 enemies at you once is just annoying not hard, the flow and the pace of the game is all over the place, also I didnt like the controls especially playing in a gamepad it felt clumsy to play. I cant even imagine playing this solo it must be a truly boring experience of repetition, I played coop with my best friend and after halfway through the game we were pretty burned out by it and we dropped and moved to another game and because of that I simply cant recommend this game.

The multiplayer is one of the buggiest experiences I've ever had in a game ever. It crashed around three times per level, I don't understand how this has such positive reviews. The earlier levels are admittedly enjoyable and were fun to experience but it quickly drops off around halfway into the game where the levels become an absolute slog and I found myself wanting to finish the game just so I could uninstall the damn thing.

I had a lot of fun playing through Magicka and it one of my favourite games on steam, it has a really unique magic mechanic that is different from any game ive seen before and is a awesome game to play with friends.
Though i must admit that the game did feel way more challenging playing through my self vs with my friends.

This is one of my all time favorites, but it's unplayable as of 2021, too many bugs patched in since they spammed microtransactions. It doesnt work - simple as that. Crash to desktop at every chapter. Check forums if you don't believe. Dont buy it, unless you are testing it out, and keep in mind your 1h refund.

Its a pretty good game, but if you're not a trigger happy person or good at spamming the right buttons, you might not be able to play it properly. So uhhhhh... Its very good.

Really fun but it relies on other people, just offers you a great platform to create the fun, little point in playing solo.
Was a very creative game when it came out, to this day only a handful of other games took advantage of the concept.

Game is very broken in it's current state you'll probably experience a lot of crashes in the most up to date version of this game.

That being said it is still a all time favorite for me, compared to the second one I way prefer this one even with the crashes.

Something about how all the spells cast give you a real sense of power but while you may have these power spells they are about just as dangerous to you as they are your enemy. This game does a good job on rewarding players for being able to cast spells quickly and effectively.

--Strengths--
- Fun Combat, every spell feels really powerful. Get to actually blow up your enemies.
- So many spells, Even though I know a lot of the strongest spells in this game I'm still always experimenting even till today.
- Game is very comedic, You can tell when they were making these characters and story they were having fun with it.
- Good DLC characters and extra story, (Do be aware I think only Vietnam Rescue Mission and Stars are Left would probably be the only working ones excluding characters).
- Good secret locations and items in the main story such as gram in chapter 2 allows you to one shot the boss in chapter 11.
- Guns. Guns and magic what more needs explaining?
- Chapters 5, 8, 9, 11. Awesome chapters probably some my favorite gameplay in those chapters. Chapter 11 is super hard but so fun.
- Enchanting your weapons with magic and area casting, one of the coolest mechanics in any game I've seen such as casting ice on your weapon will turn it into a big ice sword instead shooting projectiles of ice and extends your abilities to be creative.
- Spell Books they give you some crazy spells some of them being very useful and you will come to rely on them quite a bit.
- Bunch of unique NPCs making every chapter in the game interesting.
- Lethal spells balance out the multiplayer experience as you can pretty easily kill each other.
- Good Achievements both hard and easy to obtain.
- Challenge mode is super fun just a gauntlet of enemies great for experienced players.
- Super fun to play multiplayer.
--Weaknesses--
- As mentioned before the game crashes basically in between every chapter for the most part and rarely between loading screens but still playable. You just have to reboot the game a lot which can be annoying.
- Game tends to lag in multiplayer, although I have not tried a multiplayer match with someone near me recently.
- Some bugs in the game I don't think are intended but you can learn how to use them to your advantage (Such as casting lightning and water together)
- Chapter 3 The druid battle and airship battle can be really difficult for players wanting to start playing this game but aren't very experienced.
- Chapter 11 tends to be a nightmare of a level for people reaching it for the first time.
- About 3/5 of the DLC is broken that isn't a challenge or character.
- Thunderbolt is cracked and a lot of people tend to rely on it from chapter 3 to chapter 7 which can cause a lot of players to struggle on chapter 8 and above.
- Game has very low players now I would probably say you only see about 1 - 4 online games around the clock but they are usually private.
- Weird movement mechanics its left click to move which can weird out a lot of new players but you tend to get used to it pretty quickly.
--Conclusion--
It's an amazing game if your willing to will power through the crashing of it in 2021. It can be hard for anyone trying to pick up this game this late as their is very hard difficulty spikes in chapter 5, 8, 11 despite the spikes in difficulty those are some of my favorite chapters as they really force you to think what spells do I need to cast to make it through this level. Lots of fun little secrets in the game such as saving all the houses in Chapter 3 lets you get a m60 which is super powerful. Overall, great game highly recommend it I would play it both solo and multiplayer as its a different experience. Multiplayer your allies are very dangerous and usually end up killing you more but it's chaotic fun. Solo really forces you to build up your skills as every enemy in the game focuses on you now and if your not quick to spell casting you can become very easily overwhelmed by enemies. 10/10 (9/10 with crashing)

This was a fun game, but I can't recommend it because of the frequent crashes. They've been affecting many users since 2018 and the developers haven't fixed them. Don't get this game until you see reviews saying the crashes are fixed or you risk having a bad time.

Really wanted to play the game but it litterly unplayable wanted to coop with my friend but the game crashed constantly and i tried playing in 4k but the writing hasnt been scaled so was very hard to read when i switched to hd it caused the visuals to freak out. This is a shame as ive heard so much positive about the game but i cant even play it.

If you wanna laugh and get mad at your friends while making things (yourself and your friends included) explode into very small, bloody pieces, this game is definitely for you! Preferably you'd play this with others, but it's not a requirement, and it might be good to play alone if you have yet to learn the somewhat complicated and finicky controls.

Anyway, I enjoy it and recommend you play it if you have time.

P.S.: Vlad isn't a vampire, just a weird wizard who happens to have very sharp teeth!

if it wasnt for paradox interactive coming in like years after the original developers left to form arrow head, the game would run fine, great game wonderful hijinks, my greatest love goes to the original developers, buuuuut then paradox interactive stepped in years later like 9 or 10 years later, added unnecessary new dlc robes and somehow completely fucked the game causign it to crash after every level, includign for multiplayer and single player. other than that (you do still get to progress) its possibly my favourite game of all time

The main story is very predictable. Dialogues are fine with some good humour.
Gameplay is the best thing about this game. There are a lot of interesting combinations of elements and it's very fun to explore and use them.
Playing with a friend is pretty much a requirement. Can't really imagine enjoying it all alone.

A good game to play with a friend, not much else.

They need to fix the multiplayer function. The game crashes after a while with Online Play (we figured out that it crashes less often with Remote Play.)
It has happened many times that I can't even see the main menu when starting the game. Which makes it even more frustrating.

Pretty fun game with original mechanics and humorous writing. Even though this game has a co-op feature, it is still fun playing solo without being too hard (contrary to Magicka 2). There is an adventure mode (campaign) which I love, with a reasonable play time and some challenges for constant killing. Originality of the game is making the spells and magicks. You need to combine certain elements for certain spells and magicks and variety of the magicks is wide while spell variety is good. Although I do not like the DLCs, you can buy them with bundle for additional robes, challenges and side adventures. They have a decent price with bundle, especially at sales.

Magicka is good fun, the singleplayer game can be played with friends and let me just say that with friends is where this game really shines.

The spell casting is really interesting and while button mashing is possible, you have to learn the casting system to really make a dent in this game.

I love Magicka and it's truly a fresh new addition to the top down isometric action genre. No real RPG elements here other than collecting new spells, but it's good fun. Definitely recommend.

Good grief, this game is unstable as hell. My friends and I had a lot of fun - when it let us, anyway. But with a group of 3 people, at least 1 person tended to be rebooting the game around 50% of the time. Standouts for CTD included boss battles, loading screens, and, uh... existing?

In a 2.5 hour play session, we collectively had well over 20 crashes, two of which required full computer reboots. It's that bad, and it's clear that they've prioritized pumping out DLC over actually fixing any of the literally game-breaking bugs.

Magicka was one of those games sitting on my backlog list - something I acquired years ago but never really got to play it. Just recently I have decided to devote some time to it and I was happy to see that the online community was not entirely dead - I was able to find a coop session which did not require any password to join.

Pure fun without loot

An interesting aspect of the game is that it omits looting. We get to pick up melee weapons or staves but picking up one ditches the other. There are no inventories and what passive or active ability these items can give us does not change the core part of the game which requires you to cast spells as quickly as possible. So, only one staff and one melee weapon (or firearms as a joke) can be at our disposal at all times.

Elements, elements everywhere

8 are available (water, fire, cold, earth, life, shield, arcane and lightning) for you to cast spells. You can use them on their own but things become interesting as soon as you combine these elements. For instance, arcane allows you to shoot a beam at your opponent. Do you also want to set them on fire? Then add it before casting the beam. Earth lets you shoot powerful rock projectiles - slow your enemies down by adding cold to it.

Up to five elements can be chained together and if you use the same elements you get the same but stronger spell. Hitting the hotkey for earth 5 times will result in a huge rock formation that deals a much greater damage to your opponents. Don't worry: spells we are familiar with from other games can also be found. We can cast thunderstorms, revive our fallen comrades or apply haste so that we can quickly avoid the hammer of a towering beast. This, however, requires us to be on the lookout for Magick books that contain these unique, powerful enchantments.

Because there is no mana Magicka boils down to one and only one thing: how fast you can press those 8 hotkeys. Oh, mind you, there are sub-elements, too. Water and fire give you steam, for instance. While we can chain together up to 5 elements tops if they include one of the extras you'll be in for some serious button pressing to get that spell. It's fun experimenting with the elements to come up with new types of projectiles, barriers, rays or spray attacks. You'll also find out that the elements you can apply to yourself - out of water and wet? Use fire on yourself before an enemy wizard casts lightning on you. Annoyed that enemies get around your shield barrier? Apply it to yourself and boost it for extra defense!

Gibberish parlance

The game employs fun from the get-go. Yes, you venture into nature and visit many towns to save people and the king himself and fight monsters but along the way you find a lot of funny characters. Vlad, for instance. He hides that he's a vampire but you already know it. There are movie and video game references and the language used in the game is a mix of Nordics, English and a lot of mumbo jumbo. In plain English: you need those subtitles for it to makes sense!

Broken wizardry

The game is not without issues. Difficulty spikes are sudden when the core mechanics already require some time to get used to. There's not much room to maneuver on the levels. You really have to be fast otherwise enemies can easily surround you and then it'll be tough to escape. Coop helps but crashes are frequent especially just before boss battles. Also, there's friendly fire so coop has its own added frustration. There's new game plus, several DLCs and challenges for you to complete, though. It's an almost 10-year old game but it looks acceptable and runs well.

Overall, a great pastime if you like challenging games and those played from an isometric perspective.

If you love yourself and your friends, don't play this game. The gameplay is fun, the story and writing is... well it's really cringy, but fun when you have people to laugh at it with.

But jeeze this is horrible to try and actually play. Constant crashing and losing progress, especially on DLC missions with no check points.

I would never suggest anyone try and play this by themselves. It's horrible. Good for some laughs with pals if you can deal with the crashing. And getting murdered sometimes too.

10 years ago I could easily have given Magicka a hearty thumbs up. It's not so much the passage the time has obsoleted the game, no other games have come out with its unique combat mechanics. Sadly the game is too unstable in its current form to broadly recommend. Crashes are frequent on modern hardware on Windows 10, and it requires too much fiddling to get working.

It's a shame as this unique isometric third person action game has some really fun ideas. You truly are a glass cannon, and are more likely to blow yourself up then be victim to the multiple baddies you will fight. The central hook is you have 8 different combat spells you can combine for different effects. This leads to thousands of possible effects, though practically you'll use around 10. Still, it does mean the skill ceiling is quite high for this game.
Its biggest drawback is after the first 10 minutes you've seen everything, there is no progression really after Chapter 2. There are a lot of different combinations to experiment with but once done you'll be doing very similar things for different combat encounters.

Second, the game seems built for local multiplayer, but gamepad controls are just not practical in this kind of game, so it's LAN or nothing. If it doesn't crash.

Buggy ass mess would randomly crash in multiplayer mode, but crashless in single player....chapter 9 crash caused by apparently passing some fence and when you beat the boss of the level and exit out the church, the game crashes.....took 10 crashes to finally give up and find out why..... The bosses are also buggy....in the chapter level where we need to beat down the reaper, he would bug out of the area preventing us from being able to kill it as the game doesn't progress because he is nowhere to be seen.....probably hiding coz we beat his minions too easily or something.... I tried recording it but the time I record it was the time it decided to play nice....so no video evidence on this....

Also....this a masochist game....just putting it out there....need to be extremely agile with your fingers.....one fat finger press or hesitation and you're gone...the game's that fast pace....at least for solo for me anyways since no one one my friendslist who had the game wanted to play with me.... So to win this game you need twitchy fingers....like....up there twitchy.... I'd say DOTA or LOL level finger twich...but I play neither so im like way below even noob level...hahahaha

Also alt tabbing is bad for that game...crashes it....sometimes.....even if the game is in windowed mode.....

Magicka is a fun game, but way to buggy to be playable. On level transition there is a chance the game will crash, or just randomly during play. There is a bug where the camera just freezes in place and cannot be moved again. Your equipment might just randomly disappear if you load a level or die and restart, which makes certain achievements which require you to carry specific items to certain levels impossible. In multiplayer, these bugs are even more rampant. Until the devs actually start to fix this game, stay away from it.

Heartbroken, Magicka is amazing and one of my all time favorites but the game is broken. Impossible to play with friends without crashing, and it seems like it has been an issue for a long time with little hope to be fixed.

Good game, is comedic, especially the DLCs.... Fun with friends, can connect across continents w/o dying of ping as long as you have ok internet. It has well.... a Vietnam DLC of all things, adds to the character of the game... 10/10 would buy the sequel if released... Also good for its price of $5 (got it on sale for $2.50)

This game is so much fun! It was worth all the money (it was only 2,50 euro when I got it but It's still worth 10 euro). The game is very unique, but I recommend playing it with friends since it isin't so fun without friends helping you out and goofing around with combinations of spells. I'm too lazy to write a very detailed review but you should buy it.

Magicka is a fun little co-op game.

You control a mage with access to a wide variety of basic spells like fire, water, earth, lightning, barrier, etc. The combat is very deep because you can combine 2-5 different spells to create a new spell. For example, combining fire and water will create steam, combining fire and barrier will create a wall of fire, etc.

In Magicka you have to mix the elements to use some badass spells, but after all the best move is just spam rock and do massive damage, at some situations you have to switch for another element, but ultimately you have to stone enemies. Magicka shines in co-op, in single you may be bored. The story is ok, a lot of jokes intertwine between. The biggest downside is the fact that there are no servers, you have to host it and it can be very buggy and laggy because of it. Many times the game just closed when there was chapter change and i had to restard it. It's an old game and have no support anymore, if you don't mind struggling lightly to launch the game and want to play some good co-op with your friends test it, it's cheap anyway and can be very fun.

I was ten times more likely to be deleted instantly by my friend casting Crash to Desktop than I was to be killed by any enemy. When I tried to retaliate by casting Crash to Desktop on him, it would delete me instantly anyway. Reality is unstable, but only when it concerns my existence.

Do not buy. Magicka is really fun (Magicka 2 runs great). But it is broken. Countless crashes and forum posts requesting help. there is no singular fix. Wasted more time trying to fix it than playing. best to avoid and save your money. Steam should remove this game as it is so broken.

Sadly I can't recommend this game. Around Chapter Three the game constantly crashes and becomes unplayable. It's a shame as I enjoyed the 2nd so much and this had the same humour, style and fun game play. However none of the suggested fixes work and it appears there's no intention from Paradox to fix the issue. Don't waste your money or time.

Sadly cannot recommend because somewhere at around chapter 4 it will constantly keep crashing your co-op partner during the boss fight. And they can't reconnect during a boss fight and if you restart, you're back to beginning of the entire chapter. RIP.

Otherwise we were just getting one DC with every chapter start which wasn't that much of an issue as it was regular. The random bugs in the game were rather funny. But not being able to progress past a portion of a game... that's a different story.

I really liked the overall game design. Creating lots of different spells by combining elements is fun. However, if you are looking forward to play with your friends, I strongly recommend you to stay away from this game.

Lots of disconnects and crashes made us stop playing it. We couldn't stand it after some time and stopped playing. This is an extremely rare case for us, I must say. We finished a lot of games together (even the ones we didn't like that much) on hardest difficulty possible. So it's an understatement to say it's a very patient group of people.

Especially, when someone disconnects just before a boss fight (which is the most common), it's over. Because they cannot rejoin during a boss fight so you have to restart the lobby. You restart the lobby, disconnected friend is now fine. But guess what? Some other friend starts disconnecting. Boom. Not a single boss fight was one shotted because of these problems. It was an awful experience.

Doesn't matter how good the game is if it can't be enjoyed. It's a shame for developers not cleaning up this mess although it's promoted as a co-op game.

Playing Magicka isn't about going through the motions with a control scheme you've used a thousand times before. It requires some reflex training that can reward you with wildly entertaining success on the field of battle. With a level-headed team of four, Magicka's cooperative action is entrancing chaos. It's rare for a game to feel this mechanically satisfying.

We played this game a few times with my buddies, it's loads of fun for it it's price and I would recommend it to anyone.... except the latest patches broke multiplayer, so you're no longer able to enjoy this game with friends, which was it's major selling point.

I tried to play it with three of my friends, thinking to myself that surely the bugs I'd encountered many years ago had been fixed. So I host a game. After some trial and error about whether to start the game in public or private mode, we discovered that nobody could see the public game from the game and nobody see the steam option to join a private game. Fine, I thought. Surely once everyone gets into the lobby, our troubles will be over. Then we find out that once everyone readied and I clicked start, only three of the four of us saw a loading screen. So we had to all back out to try again. The second attempt worked better and we all got into the game. Then began the tutorial, and in the first 3 seconds the tutorial popups appear to freeze the game. We are left with no choice but to go into the menu to skip the tutorial. How hard could it be? Well after playing around with the controls together for about 10 minutes and generally having fun, the game crashed for one of the four of us. Not wanting to go through the lobby process a third time, we instead opted to go play something else. I remember the game being fun, but not worth the frustration.

Game constantly crashes on Windows 10. Tried playing 4 player coop and we all spent the night watching each of us crash over and over. Too bad. Used to be a great coop game. Tried all the supposed fixes too. Nothing worked. Don't spend your money on this I guess.

Magicka has been blessed with innovative game design, fun writing and beautiful art but also cursed with an atrocious code and a greedy publisher.
While the action filled gameplay may be enticing, you soon realize that it simply isn't enough to motivate you to complete the game. The further you progress, the more complex the battles will be- more enemies, more spells, MORE BUGS AND CRASHES! I've played far worse games and given them a positive review because I enjoyed them, but the amount of issues this game has simply won't allow me to enjoy it. I feel so frustrated after playing just a single stage of the 12 level campaign, that I'm relieved when the game inevitably crashes. Unfortunately, I keep coming back for the rare moments of pure joy, chaos and destruction. Nothing short of a love-hate relationship.
It looks like Magicka desperately needed another couple of months worth of development, testing and balancing (playing solo is way harder than playing co-op, the game was obviously made to be played with at least one other person).
On top of that, the publisher is Paradox, which means every bit of non-essential content will be cut and sold separately.

I've mixed feelings about this game, on the one hand it is a lot of fun: cartoon'y, amusing, colourful and even charming. On the other hand its tedious, linear and repetitive.

Ironically, the biggest problem of the game, for me, is why I suspect so many people like it, a huge array of keyboard key-combinations calling up different magic. Practice makes perfect and the more you play the more fun I suspect it becomes.

However, over 3 hours in and I'm still regularly looking at the keyboard trying to conjure a specific spell - often resulting in having to press the keys repeatedly either because:

The 'bad guy' has to be hit many times over
Or, because I often miss-press a key

Negatives aside, I can see the appeal of the game. I'm sure its a blast with friends and your character's customisation is brilliant - and that's coming from someone who isn't a fan of superfluous cosmetic changes in any game. When you do get a spell right, at the right moment it's fantastic! Especially so when it hit's it's mark and for the briefest of moments you feel like the all powerful Merlin.

I've not experienced the crashes, freezes or 'bugs' many reviewers here mention, but I suspect most 'issues' boil down to the ineptness of the reviewer themselves rather than the game - i.e. Building a PC doesn't make you an expert, but getting globally recognised qualifications and vast experience in troubleshooting does.

In Summary

It's not a game I will play much, but given how cheap I bought it for the 3+ hours I have put in make the purchase worth it. i.e. A sandwich costs more than what I paid for this, and you eat a sandwich in just a couple of minutes.

Recommended, especially with friends.

Magic combat combined with comedy.

What is it?

It's a single player/co-op story, where the player (or players) are following a story to save the world. In the players arsenal is a variety of melee weapons, and a staff which allows the player to use magic. There are 8 different elements the player can use to create a very large variety of different spells and methods to either fight or defend. See a goblin you want to kill? Use fire. See a goblin in water? Where fire wouldn't work? Use lightning for extra damage.

The game is very clever with how it uses the elements and combinations. For example you can't combine lightning with a rock as the rock cancels the lightning out due to grounding. Combing a rock with fire however turns it into a fireball. There are a lot of combinations that require thought, especially as the game progresses and you have to work out challenges a bit

Pros:

Very enjoyable storytelling and characters.
Great variety of spells and element combinations.
Aesthetically pleasing art style.
Comical.
Lots of additional side things to do like house building, weapon crafting, potion making, etc.
Good variety of enemies which requires the players to change how they kill enemies as some may be immune to others weakness.
Story difficulty increases to make the game challenging.
Drop in/out multiplayer.
Game let's you kill absolutely everyone.
Game let's you crash people to desktop randomly, including yourself!

Cons:

Can be frustrating sometimes due to enemies immunity to certain elements.
A bit too linear.
Friendly fire can sometimes be frustrating.
It's difficult to remember all the combinations/special spells.
Definitely needs voice to communicate it on co-op.

Summary

I would highly recommend this game if you have at least one friend to play with as it's just great for a laugh together. The combinations require great thought, and do offer a lot of enjoyable/humorous results at all the wrong moments. The story is well designed and the dialogue is often funny, even right from the start. There are also secrets hidden and found along the way to give you something to look out for. Lastly, there are additional game modes to add to the content and give you additional fun, but, again, friends recommend.
