I had bought it on mobile a few years ago and already loved it back then. Although I remember it being more difficult than it actually is, I love all these different puzzles and mini games Machinarium offers, and even the included guide book is so pretty!

Puzzle
As a fan of old-school point and click games, I really wanted to love Machinarium. It has lots of things going for it: a wonderful aesthetic, endearing characters, and good music. But for me, the majority of the gameplay falls flat.
The graphics and level of detail were overdone. Also the music was very nice - but these puzzles: the totally ridiculous puzzles! How the hell would I ever be able to unravel these partially cruel mysteries? It sometimes was so hilarious that I started to laugh myself to tears whilst reading the walkthrough. Man, was this game some harsh brainteaser...
For example: At one point you have to go up and down underneath a power line because a bird is sitting on it and you need to get it down. What was I doing? Walking up and down all time with the bird doing the same. I almost exploded. When I finally got the idea to see the robot up and down because that's what he does to reach things high above or down below. That took some doing.
Overall, I would only recommend Machinarium to fans of the genre, as there is really not much to the experience. In addition, there is zero replayability, and the game's length is not reminiscent of the original 90s hits.

The music is very mellow. Even the more uptempo music is relaxing. This fits well with the art and game style. The progression is fun, and allows for a more open feel than many puzzle games that I have played in the past.
While this is a kid friendly game, some of the puzzles might require some parent assistance. This would be a great father and/or mother with son and/or daughter game. This is a great short game for a family activity. There are many different mini games with many different flavors of style, as well as a touch of nostalgia for those around my age.
In all, this game is recommended, but I would consider it more orientated for the young, and plan on gifting this to my niece for her kiddos. Cheers and Game On!

+ Excellent animation, beautiful hand-drawn art.
+ Nice soundtrack.
+ Original and interesting setting.
+ Has a great variety of puzzles. Some (but very few) are purely logic/deduction-based and are satisfying to solve.
Cons:
- Awkward control and interaction.
- Slow walking speed of the protagonist. This is exacerbated by the intentional design that you can only know whether an object is interactable when you are near it.
- Tedious and dragging mini-games, which are compulsory to advance the plot or unlock walkthrough book.
- Only provides one hint per scene. If you need more, the only option is to consult the in-game walkthrough book. However, this book is unlocked on a per-scene basis and requires playing a mini-game.
- Most puzzles are moon logic kind. Really difficult to proceed without any hints, which are difficult to obtain due to the previous point.
Despite its strength in animation and music, I cannot recommend this game since its puzzle design is atrocious. This opinion is shared by many other negative reviews on Steam, which you are more than recommended to read if you are still on the fence. My suggestion is that unless you are really into its art style, avoid it like a plague, especially if you are a puzzle lover.

Loved the art style and the music - really distinctive, and I found the general direction captivating.
If you liked the classic point-and-click RPGs of old, there's a good chance you'll like this.
I'd especially recommend this if you enjoy puzzles - otherwise, while the art and music are fantastic, I'm not sure there's enough here to hold the attention (i.e. it's short and very simple in terms of story).

For Linux Gamers: Runs without issue with Proton 6
--------------------
I can understand why Machinarium reached cult status in these 10 years. Gorgeous pencil art with hypnotic Radiohead-esque soundtrack really will draw a lot of your attention. The almost movie-like story-telling is also enamoring. However, below the surface lies a difficult game, one that is not suited for mere casuals. If you’re willing to persevere headache-inducing puzzles, the story-telling, art and music can be rewarding.
--------------------
What’s Excellent
--------------------
The hand-drawn pencil art graphics, character designs and world-building are top-tier movie quality animation. Machinarium is a looker and coupled with a high-class experimental electronica gives bleak but hopeful atmosphere. Never have escaping from dystopia been so cute.
Even though the plot is very generic, the clever story-telling deserves praise as well. There are no dialogue in Machinarium; all the narrative is done visually and it the delivery is splendid.
--------------------
What’s Bad
--------------------
Controls are not good to be honest. For a Point & Click game, the pointing and clicking sure feels clunky. Moving from point A to point B is simply guesswork and once you initiate movement, sometimes you can’t cancel or stop.
The user interface is also pretty bad. Your inventory is just a top panel and is tedious to access, while your taskbar sometimes gets in your way when you’re trying to do complex puzzles.
--------------------
What’s In The Middle
--------------------
The gameplay is decent. The puzzles are great but there are varying degrees of difficulty ranging from easy to extremely hard. I’m talking about abstract thinking and mathematical thought processes near esoteric level. If you are an average person, these puzzles are daunting. There is a manual that can help you as well as a hint button. But to access the manual - which only tells you how to solve some puzzles - you will need to play a short shoot-em-up game. And the harder puzzles such as the Prison Lock puzzle, The 3 Wrenches puzzle, or the Bead Puzzle are not given solutions, rather you’re suppose to figure it all out yourself.
--------------------
Conclusion
--------------------
This is going to be a soft recommendation from me. If you like puzzles, Machinarium will provide challenge. If you’re not an experienced puzzle player, this ain’t it.

I started this game before they implemented better graphics and I just couldn't play this game.
I still don't like this genre but I can say that the developers put their heart and soul into this game and you can feel that.

A few issues I have is that some of the puzzles aren't exactly intuitive but basic enough to be solved with a little bit of trial and error which I didn't find all that satisfying. The other issue I had involved a puzzle that required to be able to differentiate music notes which isn't really a skill I have and so I had to use the solution book in order to progress that. Lastly there is a puzzle in the game that was broken for me until I discovered I had to change my window resolution in order for the controls to work which was a bit annoying.
As for the price point I wouldn't buy this game unless it were on sale as I feel $22 AUD is a premium price for a game that doesn't really offer more than a few hours of playtime, but nonetheless if you're a beginner wanting to explore the point and click genre I'd say this is a good entry game at best.

Pros:
+the graphics are pretty sweet
+It has a very good story told without using a word.
+puzzles are medium difficulty: not very hard or not very easy
+It ends in 4-5 hours. I think it's a pretty good time for a game like this.
Cons:
-The controls can be a little annoying; This problem was never fully resolved, as the game originated from flash games.
To sum up; If you are someone who does not like this style, you will not be very interested. But since it is one of the best examples of this style, you can consider giving it an opportunity. If you like the style and haven't played it yet, I'd say grab it on the first download.
My score for this game 8/10

Story of little robot Josef is told without words, just with bubbles with simple pictures or animations, but it's still filled with so many emotions! You will understand the story perfectly from it, no worries. Hand-drawn graphic is very cute and suits the story nicely, one have to admire all the little details you can see on the screen. Soundtrack is also very good and catchy.
Wicked and devious robots from the Black Cap Brotherhood are terrorizing the city and its citizens. They have also kidnapped your girlfriend Berta and she is now their maid! To save her you have to find your way back into the city and help every unfortunate robot that crossed its way with the Brotherhood infamous members. And there are quite a lot of them!
Machinarium is filled with logical puzzles and mini games, some of them are easy some of them requires a little bit of out of the box thinking, but none should give you serious trouble. Everything you do have some meaning and all you need is usually very close to you.

Using this type of artwork for a video game was a really good idea. The game’s not new anymore, yet it looks like it could have been made in 2020. It’s artistic in a way that makes it ageless. Every scene looks like a painting - if nothing else, it’s just beautiful to look at. Furthermore, bringing in the theme of a machine city, gives it a very Gigerish feel, if you happen to be familiar with the mastermind behind the Alien movie designs. But where Giger mixed horror with eroticism, Machinarium comes off cute and weird – like steampunk. Machinarium is like steampunk mixed with Giger’s artwork.
Machinarium is first and foremost a puzzle game. The puzzles are strong and tied to logic. I did feel frustrated at times when I was unable to see the solutions, but I always ended up admitting to myself that I had overlooked something of importance and it was not the game designer’s bad choices. The puzzles also help with enhancing the experience in how they’ve been executed. They’re conducted in a makeshift fashion that you would expect from a world that looks like a huge junkyard and solving them feels fun.
Sounds in Machinarium do not carry any articulated messages so any meaningful information is delivered through visual and auditory imagery. They did stumble here a bit with the most obvious case being the usage of the word „Oil”, which did stand out as a failure where it was occurred. I wish they had stayed true to the main principle without any exception. It’s usually tricky to pull off, but if used correctly then the effect is very strong and really helps with putting one’s fantasy to work.
Besides puzzles, game obstacles also came in the form of mini-games and here Machinarium pays homage to many classic games including arcade games. Boy did I have fun with the mini games of Machinarium! The only letdown was the one you had to play if you wanted hints to help you with the puzzles. I wish they had made it more dynamic and interesting. Currently it just feels like chores you have to endure if you wish to see some hints.
To sum things up, I wish to bring out the most important: the game feels and looks iconic. Overall it was a very well executed, emotionally satisfying and challenging experience which will get my highest recommendations.

The game starts in a futuristic world of robots, as your character is dumped into a scrapyard, where your journey to freedom and happiness begins.
The game has no dialog and the story of your past and what had led you to your misfortune is told through short animated bits of memories.
You can interact with items and the environment only if they are in close proximity and your character's ability to stretch its body adds up to the fun.
The game offers you a hint option in the form of retro-style mini-games.
As I mentioned the game is a really fun piece of art but is relatively short, thus feel free to buy when on discount, but nonetheless, you won't regret adding Machinarium as part of your great puzzle collection and enjoy it with friends and family.

The only problem I had was some paths might not be obvious since they're blended so well with the background. I missed a pipe on a screen at some point and was wandering around like crazy, not knowing where to go. Also, the puzzles test different aspects of intelligence (sound, spatial awareness, patterns, logic, reflexes, etc). Although the puzzles are manageable with some effort, some puzzles might seem harder than others. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though. I like how different some of the puzzles seem from each other and from the puzzles in other point and click games.
Revisiting this gem was an awesome, feel-good experience.

The puzzles are more in the vein of a Flash game than a traditional point-and-click (frequently they are focused on a single room, and typically they involve minigame logic challenges rather than inventory-based problem solving), but they are fair and in some instances quite clever. I found the integrated hint system, which I used a couple of times, less than fully helpful.
All said, this is a favorite of critics and players alike for good reason -- it is a game with character and integrity, available for a song.

Art style is full of soul being hand drawn with pencil and pen to capture the steampunk robot atmosphere. Puzzles were from easy as 1 2 3 to keyboard crashing difficult. Luckily there is a cheat book that is opened through a mini game that can reveal how solve the puzzles. There is not a single word spoken, only through pictures in speech bubbles. Combined with the wordless storytelling, the unique artstyle and music, point and click genre, and setting makes it fitting to not only consider Machinarium to be a masterpiece game but also an artistic masterpiece as well.

I would describe Machinarium's art style as a mix of sketchbook outlines with water color details. Most backgrounds are static paintings with a handful of moving components. It also has a surprising amount of character animation, mainly in the form of simple tweens and hand-drawn animatics. There's not a lot to say here, at least not much more than you could see in the videos and promotional material.
It is worth noting there is no spoken dialogue or text of any kind. Everything is conveyed using pantomime, sound bytes, and visual cues. Characters make occasional grunts of acknowledgement or discontent, but that's about it.
Plot-related details are illustrated using a large thought bubble that appears during significant moments. Usually, these clouds detail something that happened in the past, mainly centered around the bad guys and their continued harassment of the local populace. Despite being very rudimentary, they are extremely effective at conveying the plot.
In fact, you'll likely miss this detail, but if you leave the game idle for long enough, the protagonist will summon little nostalgic memories of him and his girlfriend. There are several of these, which are missable if you didn't know to stop and wait. These little wholesome animatics are adorable, and it's quite unfortunate that they are so easy to overlook.
Which brings us to the story. Josef, the protagonist, begins his journey after being dumped into a landfill. From there, he picks himself back up and puzzles his way back into his home city, while also going toe to toe with the local crime syndicate. You piece the story together using Josef's recollection of what happened before he was ousted.
You meet a colorful cast of characters, many of which who have had run ins with the aforementioned mafia, and subsequently lost something of value as a result. Josef goes around solving people's woes while also undoing much of the damage done by the bad guys.
For a game that is composed entirely of robots, there is an incredible amount of heart woven into this experience. Josef is quite expressive, and his flashbacks are both charming and moving. Each character's body language and actions convey everything from sadness, worry, joy, and terror.
Some games struggle to inject emotion into their story, even with spoken dialogue, music, and complicated choreography. Here, simple animations and sketchy animatics provide immediate emotional feedback and narrative context while also feeling completely natural in presentation. I suppose less is more in this situation.
As stated before, the game features a wide variety of puzzles. Some are based on board games. A few are homages to classic video games. Others might even require pulling out a pencil and paper and drawing out the logic. Most, however, revolve around gathering items and using them in context sensitive situations.
One helpful feature when puzzling would be Josef's pathological need to throw away any item that no longer has a use. This happens rather often, and it's unlikely that you'll ever have more than three items at any given time as a result. This helps cut down on having too many options when solving an item chain. The moment something loses value, it's gone. It has a funny in universe implication, while also serving a gameplay practicality.
I would say the game is between easy and moderately difficult. Due to the varied nature of the puzzles, everyone will have that one puzzle that they get stuck on. Maybe it'll be the connect 5, or the arcade, or the pipe cutoff puzzle. The last puzzle, in particular, I had to look up, because I'm awful when it comes to music notes and audio cues. This makes it hard to really gauge overall difficulty.
It's worth noting that the game has a hint system and a hint book for you to unlock. These systems can be used to help guide you through the tougher spots. If the game gets too vague, you can always crack open a hint.
Finally, the game is roughly 4-5 hours long. For some, that's great, and for others, that's too short. Personally, I don't really think time is a good moniker for judging the quality of a point and click. Case and point, some of the old school Sierra games used to go on for weeks at a time, to the point they became excruciating to beat.
Here, I think Machinarium is just right in its length. A succinct story that doesn't drag its feet or skimp on content.
At this point, I would call Machinarium a classic point and click. Its minimalistic style combined with its expressive characters makes it a joy to explore. Its variety in puzzles is welcoming, while also being decently challenging. If you consider yourself a seasoned adventurer, then you should really pick this up. It might be good for casual gamers as well.

Machinarium is a visually stunning point and click graphic adventure game.
It has a peculiar art design hand-draw that is able to describe perfectly an alien but fascinating world.
setting aside the graphic style, the gameplay and puzzles are pretty good, there is almost zero nonsense puzzle, and the graphic adventure is well structured, thanks also to a useful, but that does not spoil, in-game hint system. The solution is always there, easy to catch if you use your head.
as a pleasant interlude, there will be some more classical and logic puzzles between the classics point and click sections.
I found instead the controls very annoying, to perform an action on/to/with an object is necessary to always be near, clicking it from aside will have a “nope” as an immediate result.
It has been frustrating to not find a solution, just because you are clicking in the right point and had the right intuition, but you must be nearer (and no one tells you that). Machinarium is a modern and stunning graphic adventure. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, but it is absolutely a game to have in your gamer collection.

Just look at a screenshot. Machinarium is a gorgeous, minimalist point-and-click adventure game with zero text. Puzzles tend to be very simple (sometimes tedious to solve, as per genre conventions) with a very charming art style. If you like the idea of a cute robot wandering around a bizarre, offbeat science-fiction setting you'll likely be more than sufficiently entertained by Machinarium to justify the time investment.

We play as a robot, completing a quest chain to get to his beloved and save her from the hands of villains. At each location, you can go through a mini-game and get a level map, which shows what can be done and in what sequence.
For myself, I outlined several interesting mechanics that you can try to implement in Unreal Engine 4 to tighten the knowledge of the engine, perhaps I’ll do it somehow.

Right now, hence, this game is NOT playable, thus my negative review
Apart from that, Machinarium has a great story, great mood, gorgeous artworks and a nineteenth century melancholy atmosphere. A great game also for children (aided by adults)
Amanita Design: fix that damn saving system and let us finish this great adventure!

Gameplay
Machinarium is a straightforward point and click game. I liked how the main character can extend and shrink, which adds an element to the puzzle. For example, if there's an item you can't reach at the normal height, sometimes you have to realize you have to extend the main character to reach the item.
The puzzles I'd say are of middling difficulty, being an occasional point and click game player. The developers have put a nice touch of illustrated walkthroughs, right in-game! (I just looked up screenshots of them on the Steam community, one of the guides has all of the screenshots for convenient access.)
Now, even with occasional looking at the developer walkthrough when stuck, it still took me ~5 hours to complete the game, so I'd say go for it unless you're trying for some perfectionist run. All the achievements are mandatory if you complete the game, i.e. none are missable achievements, so it's not a big deal to avoid all guides.
Experience overview
As this game is made by Amanita Design, it has their signature art style, which is a treat to the eyes. Even after so many years, the graphics still hold up as unique and paints a fascinating world. The music, in typical Amanita Design games quality, is whimsical and has a flavor of its own. So I know that with these two aspects, I'm in good hands when it comes to an Amanita game.
The main story isn't that interesting, and I'd go as far to say it's pretty generic. But I enjoyed exploring the world of Machinarium and some of the NPCs have more interesting background, though it's left pretty ambiguous in the game. So I'd say I enjoyed the art and music direction, just enjoying the environment, and the story was more in the background.
Conclusion
Overall, Machinarium is a game that still holds up graphically and is a high quality and pleasant experience, 10 years after release. There have been so many instances of it being on sale, so if you got it for cheap, it's worthwhile to play it when you're killing time or just as a break from other types of games.
