I was never a huge fan of the movies and I actually played this game before I even watched the movies,
but this game is such an immersive LEGO game with a perfect story portrayed hilariously and beautifully in LEGO form.
This game is so packed full of things to do and explore it almost feels open-world and that really adds to the experience.
Multiplayer:
Playing with friends is so fun since the story follows a group of friends and their struggle. My only issue is that the multiplayer is only 2 players when there are 4 hobbits that you can play as, seems like a missed opportunity.
Overall this game is still my favorite the graphics are amazing and you can really get lost in this world, it has tons of incentive and replayability and even an insane freeplay mod allowing you to unlock even more!

The storie narate the 3 films, and it is well done, it capture all the highlights moments from the films, with a touch of LEGO Humor. Many characters to unlock and things to do, but it is mostly collectible item.
The main issue with this game are the bugs, there are so many game breaking bug, you will be forced to restart lots of levels and repeat many action on the open world until it finally works as it should.
This game should have been fixed while ago, it seems from my search that those bugs are known since the game have been released. Not going to buy anymore LEGO games.

I come back to this review now... At the turn of the 100% save achievement.
Lego Lord of the Rings is a pretty fantastic game. And much unlike the follow up Hobbit game, actually has three movies worth of content to play through. From starting Frodo's journey in The Shire to casting the Ring into the fires of Mount Doom from whence it came, this game will satisfy any fan of both Tolkien and LEGO.
Middle Earth is vast and varied in terms of biomes. From the peaceful and lush greens of The Shire, to the murky, foggy Dead Marshes and the desolate and darkness of Mordor with sights to behold between all. This game is purely beautiful with not much else to really say that can justify how good it is. It's unfortunate that with how large the world is, mounts are only few and far between since they're only used for races and if you hit a certain boundary limit, the character is thrown off and forced to walk the rest of the way. So getting collectables or quests in the open world relies on close by fast travel points and walking.
You get six levels per movie and Tt Games certainly picked out the core parts and made them just as fun to go through. From first fighting the Ringwraiths, forging the Fellowship and even fighting the Balrog to the battle of Helm's Deep and the Ent attack against Saruman to the final conclusion of battling the armies of Mordor and finishing Frodo's quest, many of the best moments from the books and films are made enjoyable from the developer team. All of these plus the dialogue ripped straight from the trilogy as to hear the badass Return line from Gandalf in Towers, Gollum's deception over the course of Towers and King and the banter between Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli just add to how good this game is. This is only mired by the sudden dread of having to play through multiple parts of a level just to get to a minikit you missed on your previous free play run sucks (I'm looking at you Amon Hen. Stupid, unskippable Sean Bean chase...).
My only other issues with this game would come down to the severe lack of any real character customisation (So many characters to unlock but i can count the amount of hair you can use with one hand) and some poor platforming puzzles in the overworld (Particularly any thin beams or squares, in particular Dead Marshes and Mordor)
Overall? I really liked this game. Seriously did. The movies, levels, majority of the gameplay are purely fantastic. Playing as the Fellowship, all with their own unique skillset (Having the ability to throw Gimli to smash things never gets less amusing especially since there's an achievement tied to it) all add up to a positive experience. Even the minikit display room in Rivendell is nice to look at which leaves me puzzled as to why it got a severe downgrade in Lego Hobbit.

One problem with the game is from the start the uses of the lego bits, and white Mitherial lego blocks isn't called out. The Lego bits can be uses to purchase unlocked characters and Red Lego Blocks which unlock special abilities in the game. The White Blocks are uses to construct special objects through the game once you have found their plans.
If you are going through the game to collect all the objects available there are a few frustrations. To access many places you needed either one special object the Mithereal fireworks or the Berserker character but even after getting theses characters this isn't made know. Finally a few of the map clues can be confusing because the will appear to indicate one location when the actual location will be above or below the spot indicated. Alll in all the main adventure is lots of fun for anyone and the option to find all he collectibles can add additional challenges for those looking for more. The humor throughout was nicely done with may inside jobs for those more familiar with the movies and/or books.

I love LEGO games. So yeah, this one is fantastic. LOTR? Yes please. Getting to play through the three movies back to back making it feel like a single movie instead of three, it blends so well together. And, if you didn't know this, all LEGO games that feature voice acting isn't just some random voice actor. They use archived footage from the actual film to use as the voice acting. That's why some have voice acting and some don't. The ones that don't they couldn't get a copy of the film to use. So yeah, highly recommend.

At this point, having played multiple LEGO games, I think it's a tradition for this type of games to have bugs, and it's certainly annoying, but not rage-enducing. However, I'm going to point out the flaws:
- no treasure detector is a missed opportunity, and an essential extra to have;
- Legolas-oriented jumps in open world are going to give me PTSD;
- so many secret rooms made me replay level million times and I could barely see them;
- the shooting is a bit awkward, but I guess it's not so easy to program projectiles and time their travel distance;
- not a huge fan of original movie voice over, still done great with slips of silent lego humor, but it's always better without it.
Overall, a great game with an innovative approach, compared to it's predecessors.

its open world strikes a good balance between size and stuff to do, its not too big to feel empty and filled with pointless quests, its not too small to feel insignificant and cluttered
it introduces some nice new mechanics for several of the main characters, like fishing, tracking, cooking, using arrows to climb things
and while it of course focuses more on humor than the story of LOTR, it still feels like you are experiencing the quest the fellowship went trough
also has a lot of items and characters only seen in the books, which is a nice addition for anyone who is really into the lore
i do how ever think its rather dumb that some achievements are singleplayer only, its annoying if you are a completionist, and it defeats the point in a Tt LEGO game, having fun with friends
and i really dont see any reason why all achievements shouldnt be allowed to be unlocked in COOP too
would entirely recommend buying and playing, especially with a friend
( oh and Sam is as powerfull in this game as he is in the films, he can do almost anything once he unlocks all his gear )

Would anyone else like this game? [strike]Yes[/strike] Maybe.
Would I recommend this game? [strike]Yes[/strike] [strike]Yes[/strike] Yes*.
*My recommendation for this game is enthusiastic, but also with an understanding that if you're not familiar with Lord of the Rings, you may not enjoy this game as much as I did. In fact, if this is your first LEGO game, choose another. Choose a game where you are at least familiar with the franchise and/or characters. Good news, though! There are so many LEGO versions of games and movies that finding one you know probably won't be too hard. If you've at least watched the Lord of the Rings movies, grab a controller and enjoy all that this game has to offer.
My Bias
I LOVE Lord of the Rings, Middle-Earth and everything in-between. I seek out comedy like my life depends on it, and anything that's a slight parody I gobble up. I also use a controller whenever possible.
Gameplay
The game follows the movie plot (barring some comedic differences) and has Story chapters, a Free Play mode for each chapter, and free movement throughout Middle-Earth. As you progress, you'll unlock characters to use in Free Play or on the world map. The fun part about this is that you can unlock different versions of the same character. Aragorn as Strider and Aragorn as king? Totally different. The characters do not level up, but they each have an ability that only their race has. For example, wizards (like Gandalf) can levitate objects to create stairs, dwarves (like Gimli) can smash objects to open pathways, and elves (like Legolas [spoiler]-swoon-[/spoiler]) can shoot arrows into walls to swing themselves into new areas. Each ability has a marked spot where it can be used, so doubling back when more characters are unlocked is a must.
Let's talk bosses. At the end of every chapter, you'll go up against a Big Boss (more so in the later chapters). This corresponds with events in the story and follows pretty close to the movie plot. Your movement will be locked into a fixed area and made to do one of three things: break or build to interact with objects, kill a number of certain enemies, or run around until the boss does something. Two of those aren't so bad, but it can be frustrating slowing your pace to either wait or luring the boss and possibly dying. It's worth it, though! Hang in there, and you'll be moving forward soon enough.
You can easily finish the story portion of this game in about 15 hours or so. However, the fun aspect of having such a large LEGO-constructed world is smashing everything to bits. Most of my playtime was spent roaming Middle-Earth, enjoying the views, and destroying every breakable thing in my path.
Note: Want to play Sauron while riding a goat and literally breaking a miniature of Middle-Earth? Return to the waterfall in Rivendell after the very last chapter to unlock a bonus area.

The game has a big map to explore.
Lego LOTR's map is one of the biggest I've seen in a Lego Game from 2012, rivaling Lego Batman 2. But unlike Lego Batman 2, Lego LOTR has an extreme amount different beautiful & large areas to explore, from the Shire, to even Mount Doom. Although some areas are pretty empty, it was still incredibly fun to explore and I really enjoyed it.
Plenty of enjoyable levels.
The game has 18 highly enjoyable levels that aren't too long or too short. There are only 2 notable levels I can say were not as enjoyable as the rest, but nonetheless they were still a bit fun. As for the other 16 levels, I had quite a lot of enjoyment playing them.
Inventory system that allows multiple utilities.
Lego LOTR had an inventory system where in normal play you could just take out items that your character already owned. It was nice since it allowed characters to have multiple usable items. However, this feature also allowed characters in freeplay to equip tools or weapons that normally they wouldn't have. You can make them out of mithril or you could find them in levels. Once you found (or forged) one, you could keep it in the freeplay inventory in that save file forever.
That sums up why I enjoyed this game. The major reasons are listed, and as I said if you can afford it I highly recommend buying.

Not all who wander are lost.
I've honestly never given the LEGO games the time of day. Essentially writing them off as games for kids. I started playing this one because I was looking for something light and casual to play. Something not too taxing — I ending up honestly and genuinely liking it. Not just for what it was but as a game in and of its own right.
As hack n' slash games they're clearly lacking depth. Consisting of repeatedly pressing attack until an enemy is dead. Larger enemies generally having some sort of vaguely scripted sequence to be thwarted. And with essentially no consequence for death aside from loss of studs — a sort of score/currency to buy characters with, there is little reason to worry about failure. However, as puzzle games, I find them rather compelling — certainly when considering the target audience. That of course being primarily very young people. Regular story missions require the use of multiple party members with different skill-sets to perform actions that are not always clear. But offer a non-trivial amount of thought to overcome.
Some of the puzzles vaguely reminded me of the game 'Trine', likely due to the way Gandalf is able to move blocks around to create platforms or solve environmental puzzles.
Completionists would need a relatively high understanding of the character archetypes to obtain many of the extras. And each character has their own inventory and set of abilities.
They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!
This game contains the plot of all three films.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2479423051
Beyond the story mode, there are a number of “side missions” available. Mostly given outside of story missions in the open-world/HUB. Which consists of all of Middle-Earth. Well, the LEGO version of it, anyways.
You can find mapstones to reveal locations of Mithril bricks and more. You're able to set custom waypoints on the map to aid you. But the missions are instance based and exist in outside the HUB world. They have to be activated in either story or freeplay.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2479429608
Local co-op play provides a split screen. However, single-player allows you to switch between characters. An example of this is on the Weathertop mountain when the Hobbits are attacked by Ringwraiths, Sam must build fires to stay safe but needs Frodo — whom is made invisible by the ring — to create a place for Sam to start the fire. However, during the campaign many of the sequences will have you switch parties entirely “until Sauron's gaze has shifted”.
The more interesting collectibles are the blueprints for weapon/armor/gear/items that can be brought back to the blacksmith in Bree, where you're able to use the Mithril bricks you've collected to craft them. You can use/equip these items, however they're mostly cosmetic with some minor additional features. Some are used to complete side missions and others cannot be collected at certain times of day — the game does tell you this upfront (in the map) so it takes a lot of the guesswork out. That said, there is still a ton of exploration and puzzles to solve in the open-world/HUB.
”A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship... but it is not this day! — This day we fight!”
The Gist:
These LEGO games are fantastic, both for kids and adults looking to re-visit classic tales or to share with their kids. They're just genuinely good games. I can recommended all around to anyone and everyone.

I really didn't expect to enjoy the game-play and humor this game offered. I remember playing this game on my old Xbox 360. I thought I laughed at the humor just because I was a little kid. But no, I still chuckle at some scenes because either I remember my old self laughing at that scene or, it was generally a funny scene.
However, this game isn't really that stable. The controls are clunky and takes time to adjust to. Many bugs liter the game and can only be fixed if you turn on V-Sync. This game is all around fun to play, It's just that if this is your first time playing a Lego game on a PC the controls will confuse you.

to sum it up: if you like lotr and lego games its worth one playthrough for sure (be sure to get it when its discounted though); if you are a completionist its /doable/ but you gotta have more patience than usual and maybe a few restarts of some levels/the game. fun to play as always and especially with a co-op partner.
replayed it with my brother and i dont remember what our initial thoughts on the game were when it came out but during this replay our main issues were:
- the map: no matter how close you are to where you marked to go it will take you there in the biggest detour there is
- slow free roam: you dont have a mount unless you get one from a racing quest or have a specific forged item that gives you like +10% speed
- the blacksmith: goes fullscreen every time you craft something and the person youre playing co-op with wants to throttle you
- random character switches: accidentally pushed tag once instead of holding it even though there was another free character right next to you? you are in your co-op partners place now.
the character creation was very bland and dont expect to use the character you made in free-plays for anything other than smashing the basic things. no dance floor but there was a disco ball with a catchy remix though. we have had a few bugs here and there but its definitely doable without fix-up solutions if youre patient and/or determined enough.

Pros:
+Campaign that expands over all 3 movies.
+Lots of characters to unlock
+Open world Middle Earth
+Voice acting (on a LEGO Game)
+Lots of bonus, unlocakble items (Craftable Mithril Tools such as Disco Phial that makes everyone dance or findable cosmetics)
+Controller Support
+Soundtrack used directly from the movies
+Classic Lego humor
Cons:
-Sometimes you can experience FPS Drops
-Controls can sometimes bug out
Conclusion:
This game was really fun for me as a LoTR fan and i sunk in countless hours on the PS3 version. If you want to introduce yourself to LEGO Games, this is a great choice!

This game is simple, great, funny, entertaining...
I've spent over 30h playing it and I have managed to hit 100% (collected everything there is to collect)
If you are looking for games to play with friends - thanks to Steam Remote Play you can. You simply HAVE to try this game out.
With Remote play you can stream the game to other user on another PC/laptop...Google for more info.
The only flaw I have is the movement mechanic, as you have to jump on different platforms and such - you can easily get annoyed, but with some luck and patience you will manage to get there.
Best ~$2 I have ever spent.

I mean, if you just want to play the story, sure I recommend this game, but if you want to get that 100%,
you'll need lots of patience and dedication, because boy, does this game have many bugs and glitches.
I had to Google my problems many times, and I did find some clever solutions, but occasionally I would have to restart the game too.
Also, and this just might be me, but acrobatic features like jumping and balancing on ropes and planks were very awkward, resulting in me having to retry certain part dozens of times.
But then again, maybe I'm just clumsy, I played on keyboard too, it might be better with a controller.
So I can't recommend finishing this game 100%, although I'm secretly proud I managed to do it anyways ;)
But apart from that, this is a classic Lego game, with it's typical humour and creativity, and it's bloody LoTR, so buy it already!

First Impressions
Some interesting things happened with LEGO® The Lord of the Rings™ (LLOTR) over the last few years. I remember getting it for free through a giveaway, and letting it sit in my library for a while. Then, when I did install and start playing it, as it had local coop available, the game had been taken off the store page. Since others wouldn't be able to see it, I had no intention of writing a review for the game as I played it. Later on, it was back up on the store page, so now I have a reason to write a review again. I've not had this much emotional whiplash over LOTR since The Hobbit trilogy.
Gameplay
This may come across as a negative, which it is to an extent, but if you've played one of the licensed LEGO games that have come out in recent years, you've gotten a similar experience as any of the others. You'll play through the Story Mode with a set roster of characters to control, who have just enough abilities at their disposal to beat the level and find a few secrets, but most secrets will require you to come back with other characters. Stages have handfuls of enemies to break apart, which you'll also do to background objects, collecting studs along the way. Upon breaking certain objects, you'll be able to rebuild them into devices that'll let you get further into the stage. Every so often the action is broken up with other stage mechanics, such as auto-scrolling sections where you're riding a horse through enemy ranks or fleeing from an impending threat. Boss battles also pop up here and there, and blend simple combat and puzzle-solving together.
In-between stages, you'll go to an over world where you can freely wander around in locations that you've already been to. It's fairly limited at first, because your range will be linear and restricted, but there are several challenges and secret areas to explore. After beating the game once, you unlock Free Play, where you can revisit stages with items and characters you've discovered and bought with your studs. You can also take these characters and items to various locations in the over world, finding NPCs with simple fetch quests, who will in turn grant you abilities you can toggle on and off, such as stud multipliers or regenerating health. This creates a cycle of unlocking new stuff to find other new stuff, which you'll likely get tired of if you try to get everything possible, though it's interesting enough to extend the gameplay beyond clearing the Story Mode.

Controls
I played LLOTR with a controller, and it works perfectly fine. Movement is controlled with the 'L joystick' while the 'R joystick' will spin the camera around. 'A' jumps, and though you can jump in the air, it's used more to get distance than height. When you're around items that can be assembled, you'll tap the 'B button' to interact with it. Otherwise, holding down the 'B button' brings up the other characters you can switch to, while tapping 'Y' or the 'bumper buttons,' will quickly switch you to another playable character in the area. To attack or destroy objects, you have to mash the 'X button.' 'Select' brings up the map screen.
Story
LLOTR follows along the events from the trilogy, but in a CliffsNotes fashion, skimming over the highlights in lighthearted fashion. There's a certain charm to the goofy cutscenes and character interactions. The game will be more enjoyable for those already familiar with the story, yet it has enough comedy it could still suffice for those who aren't fans. This approach does ensure kids of any age would be able to enjoy the game, without parents having any worries about what their kids are playing.

Graphics
The LEGO® games don't shy away from their source material, as they fully intend on recreating the look of the iconic toy, which is done rather well. The cutscenes are where they look the best, as the camera will zoom in closely, showing the blocky nature of each character and item in the game. While actually playing though, this effect isn't lost, it's just not as crisp-looking. However, with this unique style, LLOTR isn't bad looking and again has a certain charm to it. For those who grew up playing with LEGO®, this probably stirs up fond memories.
Sound Design
There's really nothing to complain about with the game's music because it's directly taken from the LOTR movies. Along with this, voice acting was also used from the movies for the cutscenes. I imagine licensing issues around matters like these is why the game went off of Steam's store page in the first place, so there is a downside to this. However, it's hard to argue with the better audio as a result of doing this. The sound effects you're used to from other LEGO® games, such as building objects, getting hearts, or destroying enemies are still in effect here.

Pros
???? LLOTR does a good job with the coop feature, because it's so seamless. You can split the screen and go anywhere within an area without having to wait on the other person, and the other player can come in or leave whenever they want.
???? The game is rather easy, as death only causes you to lose studs. However, for those with the time and desire for it, they can look for all the secrets and get a bit of challenge that way.
???? This is a great choice for younger audiences.
Cons
❌ The collision detection between your character and the environment is sometimes glitchy. For instance, how you'll interact with certain platforms, which can inhibit getting to secret areas, even when taking the intended route.
❌ Until you unlock Free Play, some characters outshine others. One of the most useful is Sam because of all the common tools he has access to.
❌ The sheer amount of studs you're expected to hoard for all the game's unlockables is excessive.
Tips
???? When you quit out of the game, your perks like regenerating health revert to being off, so be sure to turn them back on as you start another session.
???? Don't get too fixated on getting secrets your first time through a stage, because you have to return to it later regardless.
Final Thoughts
It's just a facet of these LEGO® games that they are not only repetitive within their own games, but because so little really changes aside from the coat of paint over it, between all the games they've made as well. I have not tried all of their games, and wouldn't know which is the definitive one to single out above the rest. However, compared to earlier attempts, such as the Star Wars games, LLOTR has refined aspects of the gameplay so it's not as clunky. I'd say it's worth getting, if you already know you can play these LEGO® games without getting bored of them. However, due to some of the obnoxious hindrances caused by the poor collision detection, it may be worthwhile finding another of the games that are better programmed. Since I have to give a yes or no on my recommendation, in this case I'll give a slight edge to yes, but a hesitant one.

Now after forcing myself to play my LEGO games this is the second game I've played after the Hobbit.
Like the Hobbit I recommend this game to the right type of gamer. If you like easy games, Lego or games you want to give to your kids it's spot on! It's easy, open world to roam around in between the campaign, fairly funny and yes; Lego bricks.
The voice characters and everything is very neat and you can tell that effort has been put into this game.
But..
For me personaly tho who's not into Lego but want to explore this game type I wasn't impressed with how much more basic this game was compared to Hobbit (not focused on when the games were released). So little comedy scenes, still way too many characters to unlock and use. I focused on the story campaign as I'm not interested in the side play at all. I usally love the side quests in games but so far LEGO games doesn't give me any of that temptation to do some extra exploring. No surprises from what the book/movie already has so you already knew how everything would end.
Encountered some bugs where collectibles couldn't be destroyed, were items didn't spawn that was required to progress during boss fights etc...
Disappointed but easy to understand why people still love this game. Atleast I got this game for free hello?!

If you're going for the 100%, complete all the levels before tacking the open world (minus getting a few red bricks to help in levels), as you find items in the levels for quests in the open world. This game is unique from other lego games because of all the items you can obtain and use in your inventory to help get to a secret area faster instead of finding a specific character you would normally need.
There's no flying characters, and the open world can be slow and confusing to traverse but its still a fun time. There are a few platforming sections where the barrier for falling is on the wrong side so you fall off, this can be frustrating. But you can easily just jump to the side and then onto the platform that way.
Overall I am glad I gave this one a second chance.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings are a game that have the basics of Lego games:
1. Smashing things for money (Lego Stubs)
2. A lot of characters to choose and some with specific abilities
3. Great to play Co-Op split screen with friend since there are many puzzle that have to be done by 2 characters
4. A replay-able level for hidden collectable stuff that requires unlocked characters from later on
5. Unlockable tools and characters
6. A comedic family friendly adaptation of popular culture
This game specifically have an open world to choose level from.
The bad part of the games are there are tons of known bugs for completing your collection that affect your achievement and 100% progression. The bug for achievement still could be completed with in game cheat codes, but still an annoyance for me. But besides from that flaw, this game are really enjoyable.

However, this game is not for the completionist, like myself. The game is plagued with countless bugs in your journey to 100% since 2012. If TT were to fix these bugs upon release, this game would be one of the best LEGO games of all time. These bugs likely will not impact the player who is just playing for the story, but I have yet to know someone with 100% in this game due to the game's irrevocable completion issues.
