☐ Bad

☐ Good
☐ Beautiful
☐ Perfect!
*Side Note: The graphics are okay, although I do feel like this one aged more than other Valve games. Besides that, the game still holds up and looks good in some areas, so no complaints here. It gets the job done well and doesn’t hurt the eyes. I will say the UI and animations are more satisfying to look at, and looks better than Left 4 Dead 2, but that could be just from nostalgia.
♬ Music ♬

☐ Okay

☑ Really Good
☐ Iconic!
*Side Note: The music in this game is amazing. I would say that its more of an ambiance soundtrack, than like iconic music from the likes of the Resident Evil franchise for example. With the eerie ambiance, to the audio cues of incoming hordes and special infected. Everything comes together and works perfectly. It's an amazing and smart sound design that has aged really well for a game that was made in 2008.
☠ Difficulty ☠
☐ Easy
☑ Average
☐ Easy to learn / Hard to master
☐ Hard
☐ Unfair
*Side Note: I feel like the difficulty in this game is not that hard. For one, you have unlimited bashing, which can feel a bit overpowered at times. There are only four special infected in this game and with the audio cues, they can be pretty easy to predict at times, but they can be sneaky on where they are located. The Tank is the biggest threat, but if you use a molotov and work together, he can be pretty easy to take down if you are not in a closed area.
§ Bugs §
☐ Bugs destroy the game
☐ Lots of bugs
☐ Few Bugs

*Side Note: I have not seen any bugs from my playthroughs in this game. I have played this game for years and never really had any issues.
☯ Story ☯
☐ There is no story
☐ Bad
☐ Average
☑ Good
☐ Fantastic!
*Side Note: I was conflicted on this one. I don't really want to say it's like a traditional story. For what the story is, it's pretty good and unique. Basically it’s like a movie based story. When you load up the map, it has a poster style loading screen. Also when you complete the story, it has an end credits screen which is really cool. You have 5 campaigns and up to 5 levels per campaign. Every campaign has a unique location.

☐ Fun
☑ Great
☐ Challenging
*Side Note: The gameplay is iconic and really good. Coop in this game is just fantastic. Playing on a harder difficulty and playing though the campaign is an amazing experience and addicting with friends. This game also has a Versus mode which is also super fun with friends. Although I will say that Versus mode does have some design flaws and can be cheesy and not fair for new players. The game is great in general with awesome weapons, characters, and levels.

☐ Short (5 - 9 hours)
☐ Average (10 - 29 hours)
☐ Long (30 - 60 hours)
☐ Very Long (61 - 99 hours)
☑ Extremely Long (100+ hours)
*Side Note: This game is timeless just like Left 4 Dead 2. I played this game for years and it's so addicting. I will say the downside of this game is that there is no steam workshop which is a shame. 5 campaigns is nice, but if this game had a workshop, it would have been so good.
$ Price / Quality $
☑ Full price
☐ Wait for Sale
☐ Don't buy
☐ Refund it if you can
*Side Note: This game is worth full price. $10 is not bad for an amazing co-op game, especially for an absolute classic.
Personal Note: I will say despite Left 4 Dead being an incredible game. Left 4 Dead 2 just beats this in every angle. You get more from Left 4 Dead 2 with the same price, and you get a Steam Workshop which has thousands of mods.

Intro perfectly captures the atmosphere and introduces the four characters, and the whole game looks like an old school zombie movie. Apart from you and the three unknown people, there is no one to help you with the hordes of infected human debris, which evokes quite depressing feelings.
Almost every level starts behind closed doors. These shelters contain ammunition, sometimes first aid kits and, in the later stages of the campaign, better weapons. Until you leave this room, you are completely safe. If any infections are visible through the small window in the door, it's a good idea to fire them from here before you start exploring the area. After a few steps outside, hell begins. Crowds of the infected begin to sprint from all sides and the main weapon flies one bullet after another. From the very beginning, the issue of life and death has been the close cooperation between all four characters. The design of the game places great emphasis on the fact that once someone walks away a little, they are in great danger. When the first horde hits him, the player himself still has a chance if he climbs into a dead end or behind a door and a furious crowd attacks him from only one direction.
When you run away from the slime, which will make you vomit and stick out your tongue, you are trying to survive in this B-movie zombie apocalypse.
I was not interested in the game, but I give a positive rating, because it is the predecessor of games like Dying Light, and thus I show support for this genre. 10%

But, you can/should buy L4D1 cuz it just gives the vibes of nostalgia.
Also honestly,
The price when bought in the bundle is very cheap,
i mean 1$ lol
In my region both the games in the bundle costs approx 1.4$ so yeah.
Price is very worth it. Also probably I wont play this as much as L4D2.

The campaigns for both Left4Dead games play fundamentally differently from each other and this comes down to a series of minor changes that quickly add up. The campaign of Left4Dead1 generally rewards being cautious and finding safe spots because of its lack of melee weapons and additional reload animations. Changes that further establish this include horde events not being endless, bile not being in the game, and more special infected being boomers. Tanks finish off survivors instead of trying to incapacitate the whole team unless shoved multiple times by a players and maps have more enclosed spaces that cannot be disrupted because the game does not have Spitters or Jockeys. Left4Dead1 can be fairly described as a game of shooting and shoving while backed against a wall but that can be enjoyable in its own way. Its limitations force survivors to work together and be cautious. The Left4Dead1 mode in Left4Dead2 does not address all of these changes and often has no players.
Left4Dead1 Versus places more emphasis on the common infected by having the only special infected be the Boomer, Smoker and Hunter. This makes versus more focused and not just a game about who can best use the Charger to instakill players. Left4Dead1 Versus games see less rage quits as they are less of a game of chance and more of a team game. Left4Dead1 has a better versus mode as it only has the special infected that rely on the support of the common infected to do damage and distract players.
The two Left4Dead games play completely differently, but both are good for different reasons. Left4Dead2 is a fast paced action game that often demands that the survivors are always moving and often out in the open. Meanwhile, Left4Dead1 is a better horror-survival game that rewards survivors for being slow and cautious. This gameplay difference is intentional as the aesthetic of both games match their gameplay. Left4Dead1 takes itself more seriously and has a much darker tone. Textures are darker on all maps, and the game has a less “cartoony” aesthetic. Left4Dead2 has silly sounding infected, more upbeat music, silly scenarios and silly weapons. This aesthetic different also manifests in the trailers of both games. Left4Dead1 and Left4Dead2 excel at what they do and you should get both.

I still come back to this game every now and then, and it still feels great. Good UI, nice fast paced gameplay, and tons of fun with friends.
Though Left 4 Dead 2 contains all of the maps and characters included in L4D1, it's still nice to come back to this every once in a while for some old-school fun.

thanks to valve shelving this after l4d2, this is more or less a time capsule much like console renditions of valve games; no updates roughly a year after release, an old voice codec, and a mountain of fuzzy, warming nostalgia (or the childhood you couldn't get properly).
funnily enough, this game feels more complete than l4d2 despite being birthed out of some employees messing around with counter-strike source - that last part also explains why the story is so ambiguous in this game (l4d2 and the comics elaborate on things kinda, but alone? l4d1's story is almost entirely environmental)
also these survivors are better than the l4d2 ones (and leagues ahead of b4b on account of them trying too hard)

simple mechanics which makes l4d1 suuuper easy to pick up! campaigns are great, survival mode is super fun when you have decent teammate(s), but if youre more interested in pvp then i recommend l4d2's versus lobbies since theyre much more active (albeit pretty toxic/unforgiving to new players). achievements have been very fun to hunt for so far, i'm at 51/73 atm

Story:
You select from four different survivors, Bill, Zoey, Francis and Louis, who are immune to the green flu, a virus that turns people into zombies. You go through different mini campaigns as you try to escape the virus infested areas.
The story takes the backseat on this one and of course I will excuse it, because the gameplay is the main focus on this one. I will mention though that the writing is actually pretty good and the banter between characters is really good, albeit I feel like L4D2 perfected this.
Graphics:
Left 4 Dead 2 still looks really good for the most part. I feel like the environments you go through are both moody and really good. The designs of these areas are amazing, like farmsteads, city streets and the woods. I loved a good majority of these and found them kind of freaky with the really good lighting, especially in the first campaign.
The design of the characters and the zombies are also really good, with some really grotesque designs that you know what you're dealing with as soon as you see the zombie rush into your view, which is something valve does incredibly well. I will say that there is some low resolution textures you encounter (even on high), but I didn't mind it considering how well everything else looks.
Audio:
The audio is crisp and is definitely one of my favorite aspects of the game. I love walking through the streets and hear a horde of crazed zombies groaning and rushing to my team and the music ramps up and it just sets up this really great atmosphere that just can't be beat. Also each gun you use sounds incredibly meaty, especially the shotguns which are just so satisfying to use, especially when you blow zombies into pieces. The voice acting is great and each character does incredibly well with their characters roles. I did enjoy listening them banter with one another.
Gameplay:
The basic gist of Left 4 Dead is to get from point A to B, while killing all sorts of zombies. You pick up a gun, a side arm, a bomb and health items and run and gun. It's a pretty simple game to pick up and play with countless hours you can waste on the campaigns, going back and trying to finish them on a higher difficulty, which I did and I had even more fun.
A lot of the times you will encounter a special zombie that has it's own unique power, like for example a Smoker can pounce on you and slash at you until a teammate frees you, a smoker can grab you with it's long tongue, a witch will stay away from you until you disturb her and then will mess your shit up. You get the idea, so there's plenty to look out for on the field, not to mention them giving you subtle audio cues that alert you to their existence.
The difficulty seems to be just right, however I did feel a few of the campaign levels had a few really big difficulty spikes where you're just swarmed with zombies and special types, which is overwhelming, especially when you already took a big beating.
Another thing I will say is that, even though I absolutely adore the first game, I will say that Left 4 Dead 2 improves on the formula in every way. You can play all the campaigns of the first game in the second one, with the new weapons (including melee weapons, exclusive to two) I see no real reason to go back to the first one, unless you don't like the changes of 2.
Verdict:
Left 4 Dead is a great game that I had a blast with, but when Left 4 Dead 2 came out, it sort of became obsolete for me, but I still had a blast going back to and playing, albeit I still prefer 2. If you haven't played the first one, just go with 2, but if you already own both, I do suggest giving the first one a play as it still is an absolute blast to play.
Final Rating:
9/10
Pros:
+ Incredibly addictive gameplay
+ Varied environments that are fun to explore
+ Great enemy designs
+ Tons of play value
Cons:
- Sort of obsolete since 2 came out
- A few crazy difficulty spikes, even on normal

and this game is for people that love good stories and are seeking for a long and player-focused singleplayer experience, Left 4 Dead is definitely not the shooter for you to get this Christmas. If you consider yourself a multiplayer enthusiast who’s looking for a true, old-school coop shooter. It has more horror atmosphere and better music than second part ( Left 4 Dead 2).Unfortunately this game has low number of players in 2021, but still small community exists. I suggest to play it with your buddies and enjoy good campaigns and survivals with amazing physics.
PS: Pay attention to the details such as graffiti on walls and voice dialogues they will help you to understand story.

A crying woman... You think she's sad because the mall's closed??
After Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2 and Portal, we’ve come to expect nothing less from Valve. Left 4 Dead explores the same basic premise as most classic zombie movies from Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later and so on and the coolest thing about is the fact that Valve doesn’t even try to hide it. It’s got all the crazy and wild cliche you’ve come to expect from a zombie movie or a TV Show. You play as one of the four survivors immune from the deadly virus. The survivor consists of Bill - Bill, the grizzled veteran, Zoey – the spoiled princess, Francis aka The Biker and finally Louis, the middle-class office worker that happens to be have importance in every movie or TV show. This game was released back in 2008 might I add, way before Zombies became a part of pop-culture like the time when The Walking Dead became a phenomenon.
Pros
+Aged like a wine. Couple thousands of people still playing in 2020 despite being over a decade old.
+Playing with friends is awesome, really puts you in the shoes of classic zombie movie with hard R-Rated violence and gore.
+Killing and torching zombies couldn’t be more fun! You’ll be killing hordes of undead Nazis.
+The atmosphere is tense, with creepy soundtrack. Perfect for co-op.
+Large arsenal of crazy weapons you’d expect in a zombie apocalyptic world. Besides guns medkits, pain pills, flashlights, molotovs, pipe bombs, gasoline, propane tanks are equally helpful to keep you and your team survive.
+Advanced enemy A.I that acts like a dynamic difficulty setting. It will throw more hordes if you’ve got a skilled/experienced team. If you’re having a hard time the A.I automatically eases you with health kits and ammo. The developers call this system ‘the Director.’
+Combat is similar to pretty much the similar to like other games using Source engine like Counter Strike Global Offensive, No Room in Hell, Insurgency, and Team Fortress 2. Just point, aim and shoot.
+Gameplay holds up quite well if you’ve played other Valve shooters you know what to expect.
+Excellent port. Windows and Mac support. Flawless performance, supports high refresh rates and resolution.
+Creative presentation. They are four scenarios and each of it starts with a movie like poster and ends with movie style credits. Adds it little flavor to the mix y’know.
+Group conversations are really fun and engaging. The amount of dialogue each character should please you considering the fact that most Valve games don’t have a protagonist with voice acting. Eh, can’t imagine a fun zombie shooter with no funny one liners.
+Perfectly captures the tension and the action of Hollywood zombie movies.
+So many enemy types. There’s are Hunters that pin you down from a long distance, then there’s Tanker with lots of hitpoints, Boomers that vomits toxic gas on you making you blind for a few seconds, the smoker, which has a frog-like tongue that can grab a survivor by the throat and finally the good ol’ horde zombies typically seen everyone most notably in Killing Floor, Dying Light and Call of Duty Zombies.
+Developer commentary, remote play, LAN play Steam cloud, achievements, trading card, VAC and workshop support.
+Extremely good replayability.
Cons
-Although this might be subjective to some, I felt playing this solo is extremely boooooringgg. Please don’t buy this if you’re looking for a good single player experience because you’re most likely going to be disappointed customer.
-Please don’t play this with bots but if you’re still up for single player keep in mind that the bots have not really improved, they cannot pick up explosives and have slow reaction times.
-Lacks a proper narrative. Anyone expecting a good story please step aside; Thank You ????
-Random matchmaking is filled with toxic people and campers. They won’t mind you from dying.
-Level design is a bit linear.
-Graphics haven’t aged well enough to please everyone
-No PS3/PS4 edition. Crossplay would have been really fun with left4dead. Xbox one supports x360 version through backwards compatibility.
-Campaign might be too short for some players who don’t like replaying the same levels over and over.
The Bottom Line
Left4Dead is a fun co-op first-person shooter so good that it inspired a lot of developers, big and small to create tons of zombie shooters and fun co-op adventure games. If you’re new to multiplayer games this is a great place to start but if you’ve already played tons of modern zombie shooters then you might not like this as much since its dated and offer linear maps. Definitely recommend getting at sale price. Also I suggest playing with friends.
My Rating: 8.5/10

I love Left 4 Dead. But nowadays the game is fully ported to Left 4 Dead 2, and seeing that both are cheap and at the same price there's absolutely no reason to buy the original instead of the sequel.

Overall a great co-op classic to play with friends to shoot some zombies. It also has pretty clever and enjoyable achievements that were incredibly fun to go for, but in a dead community they would be very hard to get them now, which is why if you still want to experience this classic, the sequel is already available with all of the contents from this game. It even has mutators that removes features from its own game to mirror the experience from this game.
