Carl, despite being a silent protagonist, is strangely endearing. And we learn a lot about his character by the way he looks at things. The world is incredibly high detailed and you can easily lose track of time following wolf prints or snapping polaroids of clues. It’s also clearly well researched- this is a totally believable northern Quebec town. The doors open inward people!!
As an anthropologist I immediately knew what a Claude-Levi Strauss book meant and how odd that was. I will say I expected more of the Cree culture to play an overarching role as a result of that clue into anthropology. But the 70’s mysticism vibe was cool.
Based on a few other reviews I’ll address a few things:
UI is a little clunky, but easily manageable and hardly the worst I’ve ever encountered. You will only need to double back to places if you did a poor job searching them (I myself missed the entire woodlot) but thats par for the course for these typically point and click mystery games (Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, hell- Myst?) I suspect that some people went in expecting a more action filled adventure game rather than a more exploratory one. It’s as much a ‘walking simulator’ as any of those are.
Snowmobile is functionally pointless and basically would only have helped a little during the ending portion.
Ending is not a standard one. And I can see where others would be disappointed. But when you look at this as a 1970s French noir story, emphasis on the 70s, it makes perfect sense. Pretend it’s an older movie and you’ll get it 100%.
If that sounds cool to you, play it!

The games uses a completely open world to explore with your vehicle. That has some pro's and cons.
+ Lot's of exploration to be done that will be rewarded
+ The story doesn't have to be linear. You can choose yourself in which order you visit places.
- Invisible walls
- Locations that look like repeating themselves with the same graphical objects/assets
- It's an adventure game, so you have to look for clues and solve riddles. In case you missed out something at an earlier location it means having loads of driving around the map to do. That problem would be less grave in a linear point'n'click.

Canada in 1970 is pretty good. The voice overs are vintage CBC. Best part is the story.
A bit fetch quest grindy but not annoying enough to pass up. Think The Long Dark with
a mystery. Worth the money? I thought so.

There's 'survival' element that's mostly scripted, heat gauge acts as a timer, the other two gauges are most of the time irrevelant. 90% of items that you collect and are not story related are useless and there's no point of using them/can't use them.
Game looks like it's open world and linear at the same time. There are invisible walls EVERYWHERE (even in a chase sequence), you can walk where you want along the paths but the game does not tell you where you should go despite it being entirely linear. Missed one thing? No problem, just check every location because game does not give a hint or marks places you've been. Also there are loads of loading screens when driving around that resemble half-life loading screens (in 2016? Really?)
Story ends abruptly and ending makes no sense. Either they ran out of time/budget or they need to hire a new writer.
The graphics are good, and the game has a certain vibe to it and I like it, but that's it.

The biggest damper on my experience was the janky controls and interruptions...such as a sprint button that seemed to work at random. I tried to use both a gamepad and keyboard but the game seemed to decide at random when I was allowed to sprint and when I was not. There also seemed to be loading screens randomly thrown about the open world you explore. Running around in the wilderness and getting a youtube style loading icon pop up and stop you in your tracks really took the immersion out of it.
Going past the technical side of things, the gameplay seemed to struggle with what it wanted to be. It was a little bit survival, a little bit walking simulator, and a little bit shooter. I would've very much rather had a focused vision on one aspect than all these things thrown in. The amount of supplies you find defeats the purpose of the survival elements, and turns it into a tedious task of watching the meters go down. There was never any feeling of trying to survive. The shooting part was no better. I would've much preferred a straight forward walking simulator than trying to get a melting pot of ideas in one game.
The story was a let down as well. There seemed to be a build up of mystery and then suddenly its all explained in 1 minute and the game ends abruptly after that. I was hoping to get to unravel the mystery in a slower manner.
I did enjoy some of my time learning about the residents of the town and exploring the environments but in the end was let down. I think a little bit more focus and more thought out mechanics would go a long way. I'll be watching this developer for their next game to see what they've learned from making KONA.

But I can tell you it will keep you wondering. Keep exploring finding buildings and grab wood to make a fire saves game at fire and keeps you warm and smart lol.
Char doesnt need to eat or sleep. Likes beer though lol.
The graphics are really nice.
Some parts are just downright scarry.
I love who dunnit games.
My only con is the access to our inventory and the torch. Could do with a reworking for simpler method to access everything.
Its a very enjoyable and stressfull at the same time game and I can reccomend .

Visually it is quite good, helping to create an appropriate atmosphere for the narrative. Although the story is intriguing and gripping, the gameplay is a bit slow (and the puzzles could be better).
Nevertheless, if you like walking simulators, Kona is an interesting option.
Recommended with discounted price (lasts about 5-6 hours).

Kona starts with a lot of potential but slowly nose dives as the open world is stuffed into a linear investigation that throws out show don't tell and outright gives you the solution to the mysteries only to accumulate in the writers wiggling their fingers and shouting boo to avoid creating a conclusive ending.
The gameplay is completely arbitrary in quality. Maintaining your heat stress and health becomes a lot less scary when you realize the abundant inventory space allows you to carry most of the items needed for survival through out the game, making lowered conditions more of an inventory check than an actual challenge.
TL:DR promising game with terrible execution.

It is a bit shorter than I liked, but I did enjoy it.
The atmosphere is crafted nicely, with feeling of desolation and lonliness, and tragedy. Voice acting and sprinkled bits of history and Canada's details is superb. Slow pace might not be for everybody tho.
It is not perfect tho. Loading pauses between sections of the map are annoying. Some items to complete the important milestones are not super easy to find, making you circle around, visit same and same place over and over again, which is monotonous. Music (especially from various radio found in the game) could be varied a bit more. Visually game is good, but not perfect. I.e. in second part of the game (which is very short btw), at night, trees don't cast shadows from your snowmobile or flashlight, but everything else does cast the shadows, which is weird. The inventory is a bit of a mess, with a lot of items, serving essentially no useful purpose, but you keep hoarding it, thinking they will be needed. Sure, some are needed, but some others, are not. At least you have extra storage in the car or snowmobile. Some achivements are hard to get, i.e. hidden tallismans, or the tresure hount (maps only show once, and they are not stored in your inventory, which must be a bug). Story could be more complex.
Other than that, I think it is worth playing over day or two, and the story and mystery did keep me playing, which not many other games could do. Worth the money.
Also, works really well under Linux, no issues. 64-bit, OpenGL, based on Unity. The only minor issue would be that on 4:3 and 1:1 aspect ratios, some menus and the journal might not display properly, which is sad. Also, there is a bug, that the game is showing nothing / blackscreen on start. The trick is to start in non-fullscreen mode, then switch to fullscreen. This is bug known to developers, but still not fixed. :(

I played it through three times. The first playthrough of any game is always achievement ignorant, as in I play it traditionally, without regard for collecting little nerd-scout badges. Kona took 10 hours the first time. The second (12 hours) and third (three hours) playthroughs were achievement focused. At first, I thought it would be a chore schlepping around the winterscape a second and third time, scrounging collectables . But on those repeated playthroughs, I gained a lot more insight and developed a greater perspective on the story as a whole: It is tale that is enriched with retelling.
My only complaint would be that it is too short.
The victims were dead by the time you arrive in town. I would have liked the suspense to build with them disappearing one by one at the beginning and the middle of the story. This would allow for greater description of the murdered characters and allow for greater speculation and guessing by the player
But the main issue is I wanted to hang out with Carl Faubert a little longer. He was a great character. I hope we get to see him again.

The investigation is really good up until the final Ice Wall part, where it then just.. seems out of place. The people stuck in ice, i thought, would be the weirdest thing about this game, but boy was a I wrong. It really felt like it was hinting towards a bigger picture, and when they revealed what it was, I was, well.. disappointed. Just didn't seem right.
The gameplay is nice and works fairly well, but there are a couple things I'd like to point out:
- The inventory system.
This game has 3 main storage systems, when it genuinely does not need it. One collective storage system would've been perfectly fine, and 3 makes it a bit too much. This is a decently small game, and it has an insane amount of items and collectibles, most of which barely serve any real purpose. It just feels like a bit too much.
- The loading screens. (we all saw this one coming..)
As you'll see on most reviews to this game, the loading screens are extremely out of place, and because of that, make them annoying. They really disrupt the flow of the gameplay, as it completely freezes you in place with a small loading symbol in the center of the screen. Any sounds that were playing right up until you get to the loading screen continue to play, even though the game is stopped. Why this game isn't completely open world, I couldn't tell you. This is definitely one of the major flaws of this game.
- Direction.
This game has very poor direction, and you're often left walking around aimlessly, waiting for some dialogue to put you back on track. My first play-through of this game, I missed 2 of the ice visions because I had no idea where I was going. 30 minutes in, I had to look up a play-through on YouTube to find out where to go and what I was doing wrong. This ended up happening about 3 times as I was playing, and it seriously frustrated me.
Overall it's a decent game with great graphics, alright gameplay, a very odd story, and a lot of walking.
Try it out if you'd like, and get out a YouTube video of it open, because you'll need it.
The bad really, really outweighs the good.

PROS:
+ Immersive environment - you can actually feel like you are in Quebec, language, items in environment everything falls-in nicely
+ Interesting story line - you are a detective sent into a small Quebec village and have to untangle a mystery and as you progress you discover more and more of the story of the villagers
+ Tackling challenges is straightforward - no crazy or broken puzzles, figuring out what to do is relatively straightforward, just explore the map and the high-lights of the map, journal is updated frequently and can help you recall past events
CONS
- Keybindings - needs improvement, introduction is not sufficient, couldn't figure out my way around binding items to keys
- Annoying loading - traveling between zones triggered annoying freeze and loading of next area
- Story could've been bigger - won't spoil you with story elements
Overall, it's a nice immersive detective game unfolding a mystery in the northern Quebec. If you expect high-paced shooting FPS, it's not that kind of a game.

A piece of advice: Try not to look at the achievements before playing the game. They are full of spoilers and ruin the different surprises this game has to offer. I did a mistake by looking at them and lost some precious, unpredictable moments in Kona.

Why I like it: The whole detective thing seemed interesting, and I liked solving puzzles like getting the crowbar which is stuck beneath a truck. But to move the truck you must turn on the generator. But to turn on the generator you have to repair the wire.
Why I don’t like it: It’s unbearably boring. Navigating inventory is excessively difficult. Doors and drawers get stuck on your constantly. It’s hard to always see into them.

I couldn't stand the user interface, navigating the paper map and other UI elements during the game is a slow fatiguing process and kills the excitement, Audio-wise the Voiceover levels are not EQ'ed and mixed properly with Music and SFX, and I needed to lower SFX way down just to hear what the narrator is saying.
The atmospheric music is nice the first time you hear it, but shortly you realize they are made of repetitive short loops and this is irritating, they definitely should have invested more in music.
as for the in-game user experience, I didn't feel the given amount of Stamina is sufficient for the size of the maps, too much time was wasted walking through large locations,
I didn't feel the hints were sufficient especially in the beginning, this is the kind of game that if you get stuck somewhere, you don't know whether it's a glitch you're just missing something.
collectibles, levers, crucial objects, and interactive props are not easily spotted and are easy to miss in such a large open world, couldn't they just make them a bit more shiny or something? you will need to keep checking Youtube walkthroughs to know that you are still on track.
my review is not an attack, but rather pointing out things that are crucial to be solved before any great product is released. and unfortunately, the game was not ready, they did need a bit more time with polishments, more time could have turned this game into a masterpiece.

PLAYING TIPS (Very minor spoilers): I took the advice from others and played it in the daylight. Much more enjoyable if you avoid the caves until you have explored everything else and have seen the other three frozen peeps. Make the ice cave the very last area to visit before unlocking the ice wall or else you'll spend the rest of the game plating in the dark with wolves out to eat you at all times. Make sure to have the snowmobile fixed as well, it also was a source of comfort knowing the wolves were scared away by it during the day and it was easier getting around town than the truck. The axe is also your friend and security blanket from the wolves. Freakin' always carry fire starter fluid and save at least three bottles before unlocking the ice wall.
Cool hack and final tips: After the ice wall falls, when you get to the point where your snowmobile won't cross the creek by the burned out forest fire cabin, simply cross over by foot, start a fire in the cabin, save the game, then reload. Your snowmobile will magically be waiting outside the cabin with all your supplies. You can continue to use it until after the next cabin. At this point a huge tip is to unload almost everything except for all the beer, med kits, medicine, and cigarettes you can carry. You need all the boost you can get when running from the final boss. Also keep the axe and flashlight. If you are good with the gun keep it for the ice wolves but I found the axe to be effective and quick. Don't bother shooting up the final boss, he can't be killed, just run like heck!

I will say that I wish it ended differently. I realize in retrospect the story it wanted to tell, and didn't realize going in. It's very much a supernatural story, and although I didn't mind the supernatural elements, the whole murder mystery thing ends up taking a backseat at the end and it tries to pull off some stuff that I don't think the developers had the time or resources to do justice. It just comes off a little silly, when the exploring and the environment and the mechanics up to that point were really very solid.
Despite the underwhelming final act, I think it's worth playing. There's plenty of richly detailed world to explore for a relatively small game. Just brace yourself for a bumpy ending.
