From everything currently in game, in it's current stage I'd absolutely recommend it. Sadly, and a lot of reviewers don't realize this fact, the game has been stopped due to lack of funds. It is not a scam, nor is it a matter of bad devs. This simply happens sometimes, and people don't understand that is what the risk of buying an early access game is. Early access isn't a for sure game yet. It's the early stages of the final POTENTIAL product. This of course means it can die, and you lose out on the money you spent on the game. I do not blame the devs, and I hope for them to be able to get back to it and finish the game at some point, but this game is officially dead for now. They just can't pay their team, and therefore can't ask them to finish the game. I mean it's really not fair to ask people to work for free, especially when all of you a$$ hats are complaining and shouting SCAM! It's not a scam. It's the risk of buying early access. stfu and deal with it.

WHY DID THIS GAME HAVE TO END it had so much content it could of had. I was looking foreword to the story expanding but development has ended so do not buy this game.

This game is reportedly abandoned by its developers. Dev logs have gone silent, Discord servers inactive... I've never requested a refund from a Steam game before, but this one shouldn't even be on the market.

REALLY ANGRY!
I was excited since I don't mind early access games and it looked like it really had potential! But after playing over 3hours......... I decided to leave some ideas for the game in the Discussions. THERE I saw that the developement of the game was cancled! Since I played too long I can't get a refund and I'm really dissappointed that I now have an unfinished game, that cost me quite a bit. PUT A NOTICE ON YOUR SHOPPAGE DEVELOPERS!

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN CANCELED AND THERE ARE NO PLANS TO RESURRECT IT!

Luckily I only got 40 minutes in before I encountered a game breaking bug, looked at the community discussion page, then saw that the game has been abandoned too early on to be worth any price tag. Sucks because it had potential, but things happen. Just wanted to warn anybody who might've stumbled upon this game like me.

I've used steam for about 12 years and this is the first refund i've ever requested

DO NOT BUY. Developers have abandoned the game and discontinued development, and the game is far from finished. They are ignoring their community's requests to open source the game or allow volunteers to finish the game.

They also shut down the community Discord recently.

To be honest, it's sickening that they are even still selling the game despite it being unfinished and development being abandoned.

Really fun game, and I can put up with bugs and glitches to a certain degree... but when I play a game for 2 hours and it just stops working... can't click, can't move, can't do jack.... including save the game.... and I have to restart from scratch.. Well that is a game killer for me... what kinda game doesn't have auto save... anyways save your money until the bugs are worked out.

Early Access doesn't really tell you where this game is. More of a proof of concept than a game. Others have said tech demo, which I can agree with. There's not a lot here. This isn't to say that what is there isn't good, I think the art is nice, it's not buggy. But, and I can't stress this enough, VERY EARLY ACCESS.

It has a few things to work on since its new i like the game tho the concept is good just start off with one settler otherwise it doesn't work because you run out of food. Also the berries don't reproduce. At first you can only carry one item at a time which is quite annoying until you get the mule. I Also think we need more monsters would be better besides snakes and hogs. therefore a great game just needs more room to pick where you want your city.

Post to recent update... Other then that so far I have seen some great strides with improvement and I want to thank you for taking the time to listen to us. Keep up the good work I am enjoying the game and will up the rating by a bit. Read my comment on the board for them and understand the reason for at least the increased star.

a good game, especially with a new update, now you have to play for a long time to pass, and not like before, you could safely do everything you can, in an hour with each update, the game only gets better (p. s. I've been playing it since the day it just came out so I know what I'm talking about))

What is this game:
- RPG
- Kingdom builder , build city or town
- Squad , build and equip your squad

Good:
- Not buggy

Bad:
- This game try to be so many but shallow in all aspect, for example:
-- RPG ... you have 1 single weapon. That is all. No equipment or items other than that.
-- Kingdom builder ... have 1 single food building , place 1 peasant. There is no supply chain
-- Squad ... you can have 4-6 'people' following you, which will help you farm stone, wood, food or fight. All 'followers' is the same, there is no attributes, special ability, they all look the same, and all uses 1 single equipment / weapon
-- Dungeon .. you go in, design is extremely simple, possibly the size of your starting area (like 20x20 squares) which you can finish in 2 minutes per level. No special reward, or drops. Each level is the same.

This game is currently unfinished no matter what you do all you can do is defend your base from these silly shadow creatures that only make sense because of the starting cut scene. Then when you defend your base you still cant do anything with it the game literally has no objective even letting you know that the game is unfinished and they still are working on fully releasing the game. They also introduce a cool idea of a shadow king but royally fail at putting him in the game at all also teasing an objective to stop the shadow army but all you can do is slow there 24/7 assault on your useless base. Please Wait BEFORE YOU BUY they are only updating every few months.

Typical early access game with signs of having no plan for content. Through 3 hours i've literally done everything this game has to offer. Followers are maxed out, towers are buildt. City is buildt and i have completed the dungeon.

In its current state i do not recommend this game.

The game is great and shows a lot of potential. But the sad part is that there is almost no content. At this point, this cant even be called early access anymore, but early access of early access. The last actual content update was added on the 15.07.21, almost a month ago where they added a stone quarry for infinite amount of stone.. They also did some balancing and that's where it ends.
At the moment, there is absolutely no reason to buy this game as there is almost no content. A reasonable kingdom can be built in an hour. Don't waste your money. Come back when there will be actually some content in the game.

This game is currently very basic, not much to do so far. You can make a couple buildings, fight off the same type of enemy every night or go into the dungeon and kill some enemies that has some vararity but not sure about the lower levels.
The ai is alright tho, its nice how they can help gather resources and help build what you are currently working on.
Ai combat gets a bit wonky when you get more then one follower and big groups of enemies end up easier to deal with solo then with any helper ai as they will just get them selves killed.

The combat is very basic, you just swing a wooden sword at the enemy and put points you get from leveling up into damage or health, and so far it looks like you use the points you earn on your self or a follower meaning they will remain weak as there really is no point in spending any points on them as you need the damage more then you need helpers.

This game so far lacks a tutorial so when you are first attacked you dont know why or how to kill it, you probelly swing your axe at them first and notice you do 0 damage, after losing or restarting you learn at some point that once you get four helpers the attacks happens. Then while taking your time you learn that you need the blacksmith to make a wooden sword to attack with, then you go to the dungeon to get xp. When ready you finish making enough houses for 6 helpers and you defend against the attacks and thats it. Some day this might be better but so far its just not enough to do and combat is to basic to be fun for me. So at the moment i cant recommend this game.

Kingdom Builders is a brand-new casual, light-hearted city builder with a kid-friendly tone and great visuals. The game revolves around an outcast prince who is trying his best to set up a safe city for his people.

Throughout the review, I’ll be bearing in mind that this is an early access title with limited features currently in place, but from where I stand the game base is good.

Plot: Once upon a time there were two brothers; sons of the great king, Esmond Avalarius.

Esmond was an honorable ruler; kind fair, and just, working day and night to bring peace and prosperity to his people.

One day the sons of the king were exploring some uncharted land beyond the kingdom's borders when they stumbled upon a mysterious cave.

Upon further exploration, the two brothers found a strange artifact called the Night Shard. The elder brother Edric, amazed by the beauty of the artifact, rushed towards it, ignoring all warnings from his brother to stop.

But he was too late; Edric picked up the Shard and it emitted a cloud of darkness that quickly surrounded him and mysteriously transformed him into something he didn’t realize.

Panicking, the brothers fled the caves trying to escape the darkness. But it was all too late, Edric had been infected by the Night Shard.

Returning to the castle, king Esmond was furious with Edric and his actions. The king shouted, ‘’Such careless behavior is unacceptable for a prince, you will never become king’’.

The Night Shard started to whisper to Edric, ‘’You are the rightful heir to the throne, take what is yours and claim the crown of unity’’. Edric attacked the king and killed him.

Anyone trying to stop Edric succumbed to the power of the Night Shard. Soon everyone turned into the Night Shard’s minions and started chasing the young prince.

The young prince ran far far away from the kingdom, to the serene grasslands which seemed to be safe. The young prince took it upon himself to set up his own kingdom in exile and serve his people.

Gameplay: The game starts off with a dramatic intro, which I was honestly not expecting from this title. But it’s too good; that brief intro gave the game a much-needed serious and important tone.

The main objective is, as the title suggests, base building, city management, and exploration. The only tool that you are spawned with is an Axe and nothing else; you have to build everything up from scratch.

The game starts off pretty minimally without any form of instruction. But everything seemed simple enough, nothing that I haven't done before in a survival/base builder games, so I started chopping down trees.

A simple prompt shows up to press B, which shows what you can currently build with cute annotations and the material requirements of those structures.

Currently, there are 14 unique structures in place and two different city crafting materials. The neat thing about this is every structure has a link or a requirement with another, making this interesting while managing the residents of the city and assigning them the correct jobs.

You start putting out housing at 5 wood costings per unit, which in return will add residents to the city. It seems like a waste giving only one resident per house; it should’ve been at least three to make things interesting.

As soon as you get some residents, you notice they require food, so you start crafting the City Center, which is basically a small berry stall costing you three wood.

But a Stall alone won’t cut it as you need to restock it with berries constantly; a good solution is to add a berry farm for your city, which will in return produce and supply your city with much-needed food (as long as you assign residents to them).

Weapons: apparently you can’t use the Axe that you spawn with as a weapon. Which I learned the hard way, by getting killed by a hog and defending the residents against your brother's infected goons.

Another thing that I didn’t realize is that there is no autosave and you will have to save each time from the Esc menu. Which is fine, but a little heads-up would’ve been nice.

Moving past that, one thing comes after another, and you keep on building and exploring to increase your kingdom’s range with settlements, defenses, and towers.

Places for improvement: The core gameplay is solid, but a lot is missing and a ton of room for growth and the game requires a much-needed inventory system so that I don’t have to carry one wood or berry at a time.

I would recommend bringing in some complexity to the whole base building system with more materials and requirements to make things bit more interesting.

The combat is fine, as long as I could direct and redirect my companions each time.

The background music and UI could use a facelift.

Obviously this is an early access, and hopefully the devs will bring in some more features really soon, which this game really needs.

Background music and sound effects: The background music is super mahhh; doesn’t go along with the gameplay at all. I get that the devs were aiming for something that goes well with the game’s art style, but it did not work out and just sounds like a generic tune mass, so I turned it off.

The same goes for the sound effects; although I did not enjoy what I heard, these effects were much better than the background tune.

World designs: Lush green top-down valley with a lot of rich colors and overall cute aesthetics.

Positives:

+ Cute kid-friendly game
+ Fun casual art style
+ Relaxing base builder
+ Great visuals
+ Minimalistic UI
+ Lot of potential based on the core gameplay
+ Interesting plot
+ Enjoyed the unexpected intro

Negatives:

- Still needs a lot of work
- The generic UI and the background tune could use a facelift.
- You can carry only one material item at a time
- No inventory system yet
- The base building system should be a bit more complex
- Companion AI can be improved
- No Autosave

What's there is fun. Though at this point that isn't much. Hopefully it grows quickly. It's a good game, it just needs more game.

After halve a hour i saw pretty much everything the game had to offer. Suggest waiting a bit until the game is more updated to play for longer periods.

I like the concept of the game, and i do realise that this is Early Access. However do not recommend the game in the state it is in.

The first thing I find frustrating is the food system. You have 1 city centre where you can store up food you have made in the berry farms. The city centre can only hold 20 berries. You cannot build more city centers so that is the storage cap. 17 villagers will eat up these quite fast so you wont have anny buffer at all. This makes it verry difficult to expand further.

Another thing is the dungeon. I only completed 6 floors. However there was no kind of reward what so ever through those 6 floors. The only thing you acieve is xp, which brings me to the next point.

The leveling system is strange. The entire village has a global xp pool. When they level up you recieve one skill point. This skill point can be used to level up 1 stat (HP or damage) of one villager in the town. The system does not feel rewarding unless if you use all the skill points on your own character (which makes your companions useless).

At last. There is not much content yet. It took me 2 hours to get into the situation where i did not feel like there was anything left to do. (Except completing the dungeon which i did not feel like doing)

Mark that when you read this, things might have been updated and changed.

This game is VERY early access. Where to start...

No tutorial? Okay, it's not my first village builder/rpg. Let's check the settings and... typical movement, E interacts, B opens build menu, SPACE carries things. Place a blueprint and chop down a tree. I can only carry one log at a time? Ugghhh...Fine. Build houses and other buildings, get a couple following me and helping build things. Why did they stop working? They're angry about what? Check town center... no food. What the heck? I have a berry farm and a villager set up to carry resources. He's just standing there and the farm is full. Fine, I'll fill the town center myself. Oh, I put a berry in and now he's working. Maybe he just needed to see me do it. Okay, NPCs are happy and working again so let's use these new swords to kill that boss I found. Yay, I unlocked the pickaxe! Can't chop cliffs. Hmmm. Maybe in the mines. What are these blue lines that have criss crossed the screen for the past 5 minutes? Oh well, I'm sure it's nothing. TO THE MINES! Come on guys, let's kill these snakes! That wasn't so hard! Um...wait, why are the blue lines multiplying? Controls have stopped responding and I know what's coming next. Yup. Crash to title screen.

I recommend this game but just barely. Thumbs up because it definitely has potential and maybe the devs (or dev? idk) have plans to do something that sets it apart. Sure it crashed, but up until it did the game played well enough. I'll revisit the game again once more work has been done to it.
