Über das Spiel

While Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her codename defusing bombs for the Global Defense Force, when evil transhumanist mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes the members of his cybernetic cult onto the streets of Neo DC, she knows it’s time to start causing explosions instead of preventing them.

Her quest to slay Heskel leaves a trail of carnage throughout huge, multi-path levels filled with gigantic explosions, more secret areas than we can count, and inhuman foes behind every corner. There’s no regenerating health here; stop taking cover and start running and gunning.

Shelly’s crusade to take down Heskel’s army will see her leave destruction in her wake with a wide arsenal of weapons, complete with alternate fire modes and different ammo types. Her signature revolver, the tri-barreled Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with both single shots and Old West-style hammer fanning action. Who needs a regular shotgun when you can load buckshot into your grenade launcher? Violent, over-the-top Bowling Bombs rip enemies apart with ease.

Ion Maiden laughs at the idea of mandatory checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But, just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean we've ignored all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint have taken the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood.
  • Experience the original BUILD engine on steroids, pumped up and ready to rock again after 20 years!
  • Duck, jump, climb, swim, and blast your way through 7 exciting zones packed with multiple levels of mayhem!
  • A beautiful game world assembled from thousands of hand-crafted textures and sprites
  • An awe-inspiring arsenal of devastating weapons, including multiple ammo types and alternate fire modes. Tri-barreled revolvers, grenade launchers, and heat-seeking smart bombs are your best friends!
  • The classic '90s FPS action you love, meshed with modern inventions like locational damage and seamless level transitions
  • ZERO PROCEDURAL GENERATION. All levels are hand made and full of multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • Thumping soundtrack comprised of true tracked module music, in authentic FastTracker 2 format
  • Easy access on to level editor and other development tools on day one, plus Steam Workshop support

It's neat they made a new game on the Build engine, but it's just not that interesting. The starting pistol feels better than any other non-explosive weapon. The game assumes you have ADD and stashes enemies in every nook and cranny with no coherent logic, respawning them everytime you have to backtrack an area as well. Shows off some impressive technical use of the engine, but lacks any compelling architectural or level design. Feels like very much like a product of demo scene developers.

My point of comparison for a build engine game is Blood, and this just doesn't even approach that masterpiece.

Up in my Top 3 throwback shooters alongside AMID EVIL and DUSK. I enjoyed this way more than any of the original Build Engine games. Excellent feel and spot-on art design. The atmosphere is sufficiently 90's: one-liners and double entendres aplenty - mostly in good taste, again in sharp contrast to much of the Build Engine-era stuff. Enemy and weapon variety work just well enough for the 8 hours you'll likely spend with this one, and it mostly doesn't waste your time. Good job, devs!

A good homage to the Build Engine shooters of the mid 90s

Combat is fun and satisfying with a good arsenal but i kinda wish it was more out there creative rather than being a run of the mill weapon set. Enemies are in good variety and the game introduces harder types as you progress.

In typical 90s build engine shooter fashion, there's plenty of secrets, jokes, references to media (Some will give a chuckle and others are kinda meh/cringe) and cheesy one liners that Shelly will shoot off as she tears through various cyborgs.

The game has a nice amount of options to customise too, even graphics wise (You can switch the renderer from OpenGl to software based for an even more authentic look of the time)

If you enjoy Boomer shooters or wanna go back in time then Ion Fury is certainly a game i can recommend.

Growing up as a kid in the late 80s and 90s, playing a game like this brings me right back to what I loved about a good solid first person shooter.
This is exactly what a game from the Duke Nukem 3D era would be like to a tee. The things they have done with this engine go above and beyond.
Its fast, sometimes unforgiving on higher difficulties and a total blast to play. The music and sound are 10/10.
I won't go on and on and just say, if you grew up with games like Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Blood, Quake and all of those, pick this up without thinking twice.
It is worth the money all day long.

Good game. Lots of fun. I find it funny that Iron Maiden sued them for using a similar name before and I will never support the band again by buying anything related.

I also find it hilarious that ironic humor in game sparked such a huge online backlash and that one of the game's staff made a completely reasonable post online and other people lost their minds.

TLDR: Fuck the online mobs and keep making great games guys!

I love seeing the Build engine turning out hits this far beyond Duke 3D. Ion Fury is a pretty enjoyable, secrets-laden cyberpunk romp. I didn't much care for most of the enemy sprites and their animations... they can be difficult to pick out in the environments. Their design isn't at all inspired -- robot man, other robot man, spider robot, hover drone robot. Ho hum. The weaponry is passable; I kept waiting to be wowed but it never happened. The starting pistol has longevity with its lock-on alt fire. I didn't much care for the shotty/grenade launcher, the SMG was just all right, as was the ion crossbow... definitely there are games with more imaginative and harder-hitting weapons. The levels are the highlight here, as they're intricate, at times gorgeous, and have some involved set pieces plus tons of secrets and winding paths to find... all playing to the strengths we've seen in past Build games. The music also bopped along nicely, I was reminded of more than a few tracker tunes from the Crusader games.

I don't really have the time to make for playing many games. The kids spend more time on steam/the PC than I do. And it's fine. It's life, man.
But this takes me back for a bit.
It plays so smooth and fast. Rounding a corner and shotgunning a cultist's head off to turn around and double-tap a headcrab thing with loverboy then light and throw a grenade towards a damned centipede what popped out of the ceiling...
I need to find better keybinds yet. But... this is fun.

I will never find all the secrets, though... :(

when it came out it didn't run well but after the update in october 2021, the framerate, sensitivity issues and every other problem i had with the game has been fixed.

this paragraph will describe my favourite part of the game -
ion fury is filled to the brim with stupid little details everywhere and it makes exploring and interacting with things such a charming experience. finding secrets in this game has to be one of the most rewarding things ever too, theyre placed perfectly, and the hints are obscure enough to make me feel like a genius for finding them. i think this alone makes it worth playing, it is so charming and i love the mapmakers for adding so many damn secrets!!!!!

the gunplay-
the gunplay is lovely but it is a little annoying that the engine doesn't support binding mouse4 or 5. it is super annoying to have to press N or M to use medkits, and 67890 to switch to the later weapons. (rebinding to keys is a hassle because most of the keys on the keyboard are bound to things already..) other than that, the gunplay feels awesome and it is so satisfying to roll the bowling bombs through doorways and hear total carnage occur on the other side. one of the nicest things is that pretty much every single weapon deals pretty much the same damage, and so the revolver still stays as one of your main weapons even later into the game. i do wish there was more variety, there's like 4 different explosion weapons and the melee weapon is only really used to power things up.

the levels/visuals-
the levels and graphics are perfect, the art is so grounded in its own style and nothing ever feels out of place or inconsistent. i did find myself getting lost a lot in a few levels but thats par for the course for a keycard shooter like this.
all the dark and dingy maze-like areas combined with huge towering skyscrapers and neon lights makes me feel like i'm in akira or something.

thats about all i have to say, this game is great and if you are looking for classic shooters this will probably scratch that itch.

Ion Fury starts slow. The first two chapters are boring and monotonous - the same 4 enemies, samey buildings and environments... And then it gets good. The later levels have way more personality and atmosphere, the enemies become a lot more varied and the environments have more world building to them.

If you are a fan of Duke Nukem, this is a love letter to it.

Ion Fury kicks ass.

Alright, maybe you want to know more than that. Maybe you didn't grow up with classic FPS games, or you bounced off them when you tried them, or you don't understand why old greybeards are so excited to play another product made in a 20 year old engine.

The Build Engine is the backbone of fast, furious, explosion-filled games from a bygone era, most famously Duke Nukem 3D(before Forever...) and other action-packed rampages like Blood(before Blood 2...) and Shadow Warrior(... which did pretty good by the new SW games!) They were in the same league as Doom 1/2, great games that were even able to surpass the grandfather of the genre at times. Build games had a penchant for lots of cool map building tricks, fine detail and even realistic level design(for the time!) They're also not afraid to be difficult, giving the player a very fun kitted out multi-purpose arsenal, tons of unique power-ups and plenty of room to adapt and overcome. Much like Doom I'd never feel the odds are unfair or poorly done because my character has a lot of power and mobility to deal with situations, even nasty ambushes and traps.

Ion Fury fits right in and proudly carries the torch into the modern day. Neo DC is invaded by the cyborg minions of Dr Heskel, it's up to you and Shelly to shoot them all to death. The graphics may be dated, sure, but intentionally so and taking advance of modern hardware. They're 100% on point with the aesthetics and art design. Levels are big, complicated, multi-layered affairs that are a joy to explore and the combat, oh the combat. Ion Fury has a pretty good roster of enemy types and even if it seems limited the developers know how to set up fresh attacks and situations time and time again. Nothing is wasted in this design space. The most basic cyborg grunt can blow you away if you're careless and there's a lot of good sound design letting you know trouble is coming before it gets a cheap shot. Ion Fury will kill you fast but once you become accustomed to it it's tough but fair, a real smooth experience where skill can overcome the hardest fights on the highest difficulties. You'll still get two-shot by enemy explosives, of course.

IF goes all in on the over the top setting and I love it. Explosions and shootouts in a cyberpunk city are a 2.5D itch we all knew needed to be scratched some more. Enemies are all various degrees of terrible cybernetic mutants and killer robots and you're often fighting your way through strange factories, past rivers of toxic sludge and up dystopian corporate high-rises. Your starter weapons are an electrified baton and an 18-Shooter 3x Revolver, both useful throughout the entire game and the arsenal just keeps getting better. I swoon over the Dispenser in particular, a shotgun with serious weight that's reliable enough for mid-range headshots and doubles as your grenade launcher a bit later. Dual-wielding, multiple functions or alt fires give every weapon a useful role and all are satisfying to use, particularly the bowling bombs.

Most of the level design is golden. The levels are huge, often big enough to offer multiple paths through them, including several enemy ambush setups where you can go around, under or over to get the drop on them. Keeping a keen eye open for vents and drops is critical, especially with the ridiculously thorough secret hunting in each level. I found Episodes 1-3 to be my favorite, the cyberpunk city presentation into the police academy and corporate buildings perfectly on point. 4 drags slightly but it isn't bad. Sometimes the levels are just long and you don't quite see what to do to advance. 5-7 pick up briskly again with more unique set-pieces and design directions, as well as being a touch shorter. You're closing in on the finale and you and the devs know it. The boss fights can be simple but pack punch, whether in extra-deadly gauntlets of enemies and/or giant death machines.

IF can be really hard, though it has multiple difficulties. It's also a long game for a FPS. It takes awhile to clear on a normal playthrough(8+ hours) and you may be well served by the occasional break but it always feels great to pick back up. If you go after 100% completion IF will last you a long, long time. I feel like I just want to gush about how good this game is and go right back in and pick up my highest difficulty clear(Edit: got it, feels as good as the first time.) Ion Fury rules, it's worth full price, it's a no-brainer on sale, if you've ever enjoyed an old school shooter it is worth your time and attention.

This is my love letter to Ion Fury.

Lovin' those shooters, mate? Well, how about you take a look at this game? And boy, you are not prepared for this.
A policewoman with electric stunbaton.
In futuristic city.
Fightning her way through robots'n'bad guys.
Simple and amazing. Forget those modern graphics - Shelly Garrison is going to make everyone cry. Baddies are going to cry because of pain, and you, person reading this, will cry because you f%cking love this game.

Ion Fury is a retro shooter heavily inspired by FPS from the 90's. This time around you assume the role of Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison who is to take down a huge threat to the world.

Gunplay: Decent gunplay with great headshots and a lot of gore. If you think of FPS of the 90's, there were many special weapons compared to shooters today. While Ion Fury has a good weapon variety, I wished to see a rifle or plasma rifle added to the arsenal.

Map design: The developers have been very ambitious and created nice looking and big maps.
Some map improvements that show key doors and exits more clearly would have been nice in case one gets lost though. I hoped to see more memorable map set pieces and more outdoor and urban maps instead of a lot of maze-like interior maps and some very long sewer missions in later levels. Also, the maps are full of secrets if this is your thing.

Graphics: Top-notch graphics with a love for detail. You can switch between a new renderer and the classic mode, set framerate limits and change FOV as you please.

Performance: Good performance for the most part, but you might need to tweak your settings a bit since the developers pushed this engine to its limits.

Shelly Bombshell Harrison: I liked the voice actress and Shelly's design, but a more refined characterization would have made the game more iconic.

Verdict

Iron Fury is a decent retro FPS with some interesting boss fights in a dark, dystopian setting.

This is great build engine shootan. It's seriously awesome. It's not Blood, but I rank it higher than Duke and Shadow Warrior. Clever weapons, cool effects, and the best the build engine has ever looked. Also, hitscanning isn't obnoxious. It's great.

P.S. lmao don't use a controller you plebs. No, seriously, don't use a controller, you absolute rejects. An FPS like this is best on mouse and keyboard. That's just a fact. If you disagree, you're wrong and should just uninstall.

I'm not old enough to have played the games Ion Fury takes inspiration from, but now I'm interested. The level design, the shooting, the soundtrack, there is something about this game that just seems to understand what feels good to a monkey brain. No filler, no padded out content, no dramatic reveals or story arcs or compelling villains. Just straight up good old fashioned fun. This game sets out to do one thing and it succeeds with flying colours. I still haven't completed it, but I don't think I need to. This is the kind of game that you'll know if you like it in the first five minutes of playing it. As far as I'm concerned, this is the retro FPS formula perfected.

Bottom line its exactly what it says it is. A 3D shooter on the build engine with a lot of heart. All the weapons have been great, it has that right amount of frustration factor without being too cheap. Worth every penny and looks like it has mod support. Thumbs up for sure.

TURN OFF AUTO AIM!!!! It is on by default!

This game is worth full price. This is the best shooter I have played since Doom Eternal. It's just as fun as Shadow Warrior and Duke 3D and I think its better than Blood. The things they have done with the Build engine are very impressive (including fixing the skewed perspective of Duke 3D when looking up). This feels like what it was like to play shooters in the 90s except that it feels modern. 3D shooters games lost a certain spritey charm that disappeared from gaming, like the arcade feel of games from the 80s (except this feels modern) this game brings that back. I have never played a game that captures the retro feel so well (and not just talking about shooters).

The guns are fun to shoot and some have alternate fire modes. Its very satisfying and the level design is great.

Ion Fury doesn't try to be retro - it IS retro! Feels just like 1996 but with bigger maps that are much more filled with details and some added QoL improvements. If you're ready to play a game that could've also been released 25 years ago, including all the quirks and frustrations, then I can highly recommend this game! I loved it. Also the game is only 95mb, lol. Can't wait for the Addon now.

Overview: 14 Hours to complete on Ultra Viscera with limited backtracking for secrets (probably got 15% of secrets overall).

There is a lot this game did good, a few things very good and a few things not good.

Very Good:
Level design. In general the way these maps are put together is masterful. It plays similar to Doom 2016 style maps in that the levels have a variety of routes, backtracking and secret paths available for the player to navigate. Generally if a level requires backtracking the player is able to open a door that cuts down on back tracking time significantly. A shortcut to save some of the travel time. Very well executed.

The visuals are gorgeous. There's no way around it. The way lighting is implied in environments with the build engine is clever and unique. Attention to detail throughout the levels is absolutely top notch. There was never a time exploring the levels where things felt repetitive or uninspired.

The good:
The combat is generally enjoyable. With a few moments that are very fun and a few that are very unpleasant. Weapon handling and enemy AI/behavior could use some improvement to improve combat. Those topics are explained below.

Weapons overall are simply good. They look great, at times they perform great, but often times they fall a bit short and leave a frustrating feeling. I think a bit of balancing and fine tuning could make them a truly unique and amazing arsenal, they're just not quite there.
Secrets. I greatly appreciate the effort that went into placing these, while a number of them feel satisfying to locate, a great many of them are incredibly difficult. Finishing up areas with a lot of unfound secrets felt a bit annoying, but mostly the secrets are a good thing. Git gud right?

Not good:
Enemy AI. There are many times where AI get stuck, or simply cannot path around a corner to reach the player. A few times is OK, but it reached a point where the flow of gameplay becomes hampered and taking advantage of poor AI becomes a crutch when low on health.

Another aspect of the enemies behavior that was frustrating at times is the .01 second reaction time enemies can have. Coming around a corner and immediately getting shot with no time to react isn't fun. Mix that with placing enemies around blind corners often, sometimes on both the left and right side of the player leads to a lot of damage that is completely unavoidable. The experience of getting hurt when it feels like there is no way to avoid it takes control from the player and sometimes feels like it reduces some skill to luck.

Erratic movement of the flying skull and spider leg skull. After the first 10 encounters with each of these enemies I simply dreaded combat with them. Not because I was concerned with taking damage, more that I knew I was going to have a silly aiming dance with them. Killing the spiders with the baton would be great, except weapon switch times are a tad slow, and the accuracy of swinging the baton into the spiders feels off. Leading to wasted time. Combat with them just feels like a chore.

I feel bad for giving this a thumbs down. It looks phenomenal. It's stylish, beautiful, with carefully crafted sprites and voxels. A retro gamer's dream...

But it's just not a good game. The combat is stiff, flat and not varied. The enemy variety is disappointing—for a very long time you'll be fighting dudes with similar hitscan weapons and almost identical movements with an occasional spiderhead. The levels, while looking amazing, don't do much in terms of design aside from maze-like corridors and switches.

Remember pig cops in DN3D fallint out of the sky in their silly flying machines, or sliding onto the floor to avoid your shots? Or drinking toilet water to restore your health? Or the weird remote-controlled car section in Shadow Warrior? Ion Fury doesn't have anything like that. It's just... a shooter. And if you want a good retro shooter, better go play DUSK.

Ion Fury is a Retro FPS, cyberpunk, action adventure game made in the BUILD engine. The fact that this game was made with this engine is truly a feat. of massive proportions. But how is the game? Well I'm glad to report this is one of the best Retro shooter titles I've had the pleasure to play. Ion Fury has a wide selection of levels, fun weapons with unique alternate properties, and LOTS & LOTS of secrets. Honestly way to many to find with one run. Sound is also very good with a good soundtrack, and beefy weapon sound effects. The only real downside with Ion Fury is a lackluster story, but in a retro shooter that really isn't a big deal. Just would've liked a little more. Would I recommend Ion Fury to a friend? Absolutely! This title is crazy fun for what you get. 9/10 Fantastic work!

If you like boomer shooters, then this game is a must buy!

The movement is smooth, the gunplay is excellent, the enemies are varied, the levels are hyper-detailed with A LOT of secrets. Getting all secrets is a chore, but an enjoyable chore. I would not recommend going for all secrets in your first playthrough.
The campaing is long and varied. You definitely get your money's worth.
The difficulty is well balanced.
My personal favorite thing about the game is the Loverboy (your starting pistol). I never played a game before where the starting pistol is an actual reliable gun throughout the entire game.

The music is average for me because it are mostly upbeat electro tracks. They fit the vibe of the game really well, but I personally prefer a more heavy soundtrack.

There are some build engine quirks, but these are not too detrimental:
- Floaty platforming, this makes secret hunting a bit of a chore.
- Insta-kill doors : you can sometimes get killed by a build engine door, the game is self-aware about this and has a funny warning sign about it.https://store.steampowered.com/app/562860/Ion_Fury/#

I am looking forward to the expansion pack!

It's important to use your annoying enemies in a smart way. Usually, this is supplementing combat encounters against other, stronger enemies so that you have to shift your focus quickly.

Ion Fury opts to put you in small and/or dark rooms and fill them with these enemies. It does this at least ten times in the first level.

Yeah, you have a pistol that locks on to these things, but the fights still aren't fun. There are fun fights in this game, too. I really enjoy some of them. They just are so far and few between and interspersed with enough garbage that I can't bring myself to keep playing.

Ion Fury is a retro-FPS developed by Voidpoint, released in 2019.

As the most recent Build-engine game to date, Ion Fury has a legacy to live up to, especially with 3D Realms as it's publisher. So, does it live up to the likes of Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood? Yeah, probably.

The level-design is top-notch, but that's to be expected in a day and age where the Build-engine is not restricted by 90s hardware anymore. For short; It looks amazing. The only real missteps are some of the settings in the middle third of the game, but even those look impressive and convey what they are pretty well. The level-design is also insane on a gameplay-level with nice level gimmicks to shake things up, and there's easily more secret-hunting is probably than in the big 3 Build-engine games combined. It also trumps all of these games in length, except for Blood maybe.

The music is incredible. That's not to say that Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior and Blood didn't have great soundtracks, they definitely had memorable tunes, but Ion Fury blows them out of the water with the amount of quality tracks. I'm not kidding, I'm not the type of guy to listen to soundtracks a lot, but I do listen to some of Ion Fury's in my free time.

The major gripe I have with this game is something I can't even lay my finger on. If I had to guess, it's just the way the guns feel. Shelly, the main character, is kind of a glass cannon, and a lot of the guns feel like they take a few too many bullets to kill, like they're always low on ammo or like they're just a bit unrewarding. Might also have to do with some of the enemies. I'm not sure. Something just feels off at times.

Which is not to say the gunplay is bad; It's still great! And so is the game. I guess my personal taste is just used to something else. But this game is definitely worth a buy if you're into other oldschool shooters!

9/10 - Rock solid shooter.

Let me make this simple for you.
Do you like Duke 3D? Yes?
You'll probably like this.

Ion Fury takes a modernised version of the original Build Engine that Duke Nukem 3D works on and pushes it beyond it's logical extremes. The game oozes cyberpunk style (the post-human 90's kind) like you wouldn't believe. Colours are vibrant, enemy designs are fantastic and gameplay is rock solid.

If you want to just engross yourself in some high-tier boomercore gaming with a wisecracking, asskicking protagonist, this will hit that spot. Shelly is pretty great and her nemesis Heskel (played by Duke himself, Jon St. John) will probably hit all the right marks for you.

Strong recommend. Just expect to have your torso rearranged a few times.
Oh, and save often.

Hey its a 3d build engine game with nice retro-futuristic atmosphere. really cool choices for the guns and i likes the little nods to the classics. Way too many secrets, would take forever if i tried to find them on my own. Took me a couple of days to beat which is fine with these types of shooters. This game also has one-liners galore. I'm having a hard time saying what i want to say about this game so I'll just say this: I'm currently wondering if I like this game more than DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal. I'll probably later conclude that I like them equally, as there are some key differences between the games that I can appreciate independent of each other, but wow is it close. This game does so well at capturing the vibe of classic games while also providing fast-paced action you'd expect from the current era of action games. I played the game on hard and boy did this one keep me on my toes! Excellent challenge. There were times throughout that ammo became an issue for me but honestly that only added to the classic FPS feel. And it's just more incentive to hunt for the many many many secrets. Don't be surprised one you find a handful only to get to the end of the level and find out there were more than 20 in just the one level you missed. I don't usually care about that stuff but the actual act of finding those secrets was super fun and I think way more rewarding than DOOM. Great times! The game's story is exactly what it needs to be. Hero and villain throwing quips at each other. The game has a good sense of humor and is packed with references. Honestly, if you've got this far you should probably just buy the game. You know what it is. It's a really good that. Buy it.

A good FPS overall. Definitely leagues above the so called AAA titles we have today.
The guns handle well, though the headshot mechanic felt a bit inconsistent.
Unlike other well known Build engine games, this one has no hitscan attacks. Also, all enemies go down pretty quickly, which is good.
The environments look cool, if a bit monotonous since it's mostly offices/cityscape/tunnels, so there's a lot of grey. They are also pretty open with a lot of places to explore.
The biggest limitation of the game is definitely the AI. Not sure it this is the engine limitation, but they often get stuck on terrain, especially the flyers when used in tight environments (also bosses). So you can easily engage them and retreat and they usually don't have means to pursue you.
There are some arena like sections I wasn't a fan of but they were few in number.

I still recommend it despite these flaws. I don't have high hopes of them going back to improve the AI, but I hope the upcoming expansion has the level design that takes their flaws into account and bring in more varied environments as well.

I really like this game, and honestly it's one of the most fun fps games I've played in a while. BUT, I have 2 big complaints with this game which are that the levels are pretty bland for the most part and it makes the game feel very repetitive after a while. I also don't really like the enemies and you fight the same 3 or 4 enemies throughout most of the game. I'm currently almost finished with the game, but because of these complaints, I am finding it difficult to motivate myself to finish off the last 2 or so hours that remain of it.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great shooter, but because of these two negatives, you just feel worn out by the 7th hour.

If you like old 90s shooters or have ever wanted to try a game like them (ex. Duke Nukem 3D), Ion Fury is easily one of the best ones out there. I was born in the mid 90s and never played those kind of games growing up, but in the last year or two I've been playing a lot of old school games. Without any nostalgia goggles I think this game is far better than any of those old 90s shooters. It maintains the same style of gameplay and is true to form, but it's improved vastly on every front. Better sound, music, visuals, movement, shooting, level design, etc it's all been improved upon (in my subjective opinion). It's so good I'm trying to get my friends who have never been interested in those old games to give Ion Fury a try. If you play this game and really like it and it's old school style, I would really recommend giving the original old school shooters a go. This game is a great door opener to appreciating those games and seeing how that game format can still be pushed further like iit was in Ion Fury.

Ion Maiden (yes, I will still call it Ion Maiden, sue me) is reminiscent of a very unique era of shooters. As soon as you start it, the nostalgia oozes out of it with all sorts of references to Duke Nukem, MDK, Doom and all the shooters that were popular at the time.
The game's principle is quite simple, blast and shoot everything that moves. What hooked me to it however is the stylish art style, the silly over-the-top jokes made by the main character, and the amazing soundtrack.
There is not a mind boggling collection of weapons in the game, but they are different enough so each of them have a special feeling and a different kick to them. Each of the weapons has an alt-fire mode which does add depth to the game.

There is of course the hidden areas and the fun easter-eggs if you look for them hard enough.
This is the sort of game that I play after a hard long day at work, no thinking required, just load the game and shoot some baddies.

highly recommended and well worth the 17 Euros I paid for it. I could've bought it at full price too if I knew it was this good.

Didn't like this much at first; there was too much going on in the level and it was hard to tell enemies from environments. Then I turned on classic renderer and 640x480 resolution and never looked back. It looks and feels 100x more accurate to the classic Build games now and is frankly much less frustrating. Highly recommend it.

Runs well, looks good, feels good, honestly this is a great game.

It's a bit pricey given the engine but the amount of work put into it is obvious; this is worth the asking price.

Things to be aware of before purchasing:
*Surprisingly heavy system usage

awesome boomer shooter with a fun story and fun enemies to kill. great environments, although the underground/sewer levels got a tad bit repetitive towards the end. THERES ALSO A LOT OF SECRETS. DO NOT EXPECT TO GET ALL THE SECRETS IN ONE GO, I ONLY GOT 30%

An excellent homage to classic Build Engine titles like Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood. Fast, Frantic and Fun As Hell. The 90's are still alive in Ion Fury and it's time to kick back and enjoy.

I knew the game would be great, yet had no idea it would be this great. Punctually speaking:
* The visuals and level architecture are beautiful - without spoiling anything, some levels almost made me cry from joy in this regard.
* Weapons are hilarious; they feel and are brutally powerful. Shelly's triple barrel revolver is insane.
* There is an amazing balance between player and the enemies - especially on higher difficulties, as both parties are able to tear each other apart. I found lots of natural use for every weapon throughout the campaign, thanks to the different enemy types and their placements.
* Nonsensical amounts of secret places, references and details.
* Shelly and Heskel are such great and fitting characters.

10/10

They brought back the best gun in the series. Grenade Launcher: only found in Duke Nukem the 64 version. Oh, and the level design is 10/10.

Great tribute to classic FPS and a great game in its own right. What has been pulled off here in an almost 25 year old engine is mind blowing. Like any Build Engine game the gameplay is top notch with great weapon and enemy design. The biggest problem is some of the levels are rather forgettable, and the final boss is not much of a boss at all.

PROS:
- Great gameplay
- Impressive visuals and solid performance
- Great enemy and weapon design
- Around 7 hours of gameplay from a first playthrough
- Tons of references

CONS:
- Not the best final boss
- Level design is great sometimes and lacking at other times

If you love FPS and exploring, this game is a no-brainer, it has everything you can ask. OST, enemies, pacing, ton of levels and incredibly detailed (being a really long campaing), frenetic combat, even a sh*t ton of secrets/easter eggs and horde mode.

1. Old-school FPS.
2. The gun sounds are C R U N C H Y.

Stopped playing because it's just too long. Apparently I am missing 2 more chapters (out of 7); the last two I played both felt to me they should be the final ones. And even though some levels are really nice to look at and very creative, others are just boring, and the low variety of enemies and weapons makes this a drag overall. My recommendation is to play the first 2 or 3 chapters and then stop.

The level design for the first three maps was amazing. Beautifully crafted with alot of thought put through it, just like Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior. The follow levels, however, were some of the most dreadful bullshit I have ever played in a video game. Everything started to look the same and the buttons you pressed gave zero indication of what they actually affected. Sad.

Ion Fury is an absolutely amazing game that is full of cheesy one liners, great gun play, interesting and varied level design, a kick-ass soundtrack and a colossal amount of incredibly well hidden secrets. If you're a fan of 80s-90s action movies, retro cyberpunk aesthetics, and other similar games like Duke Nukem or SIN I absolutely recommend it.

This feels like so much wasted potential.

The engine? Solid. It's the classic Build engine but modernized. Runs like a charm, great retro feel, works great. No complaints.
Gameplay design? It's a Doomlike; you can't really go wrong with the formula, and this is a fast-paced run-and-gun like any other.

The problem here is the game itself. Specifically the lack of variety in the environments, and the even more shockingly poor enemy variety. The original Doom had more enemy variety than Ion Maiden. *In Episode One*. Ion Fury is a game that seems to mostly consist of killing the same machine cultists over and over and over in drab environments, with a few of the most annoying little spider robots ever to disgrace video games thrown in every so often for good measure.

Now, hopefully, the potential here is for the general public to mod it and produce a billion WADs just like with the original Doom. While new textures probably won't be an issue, I sure hope the mod support adds ways to add new enemies because otherwise the community maps will be just as dull and uninspired as the main game.

I also found that it was unnecessarily difficult to determine where to go next on multiple occasions, a level design issue. There's a fine line between promoting exploration, and omitting visual cues to the player entirely, and Ion Fury is on the wrong side of that line.

(For a stunningly good example of a modern Doomlike with variety to its environments and weapons, I'd recommend Project Warlock, which has more varieties of enemies in its first few levels than the entirety of Ion Fury)

Such a good game. I grew up playing Duke 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Redneck Rampage, and Ion Fury easily holds up against them.
Great soundtrack, amazing level design with tonnes of secrets and easter eggs, and a solid campaign that took me roughly 10 hours to beat. Weapon selection is great and the game always keeps you juggling weapons that work better against certain opponents.
Definitely recommend!

+ Good level design, especially when you consider the engine used.
+ Good weapons.

- Some bugs.
- Some levels are pretty big, and hard to navigate.

I know the developers of this game from 3D Realms forums way back in the 2000's. That's around 15 or so years. Some of them were helping me with Duke 3D modding only recently. They are great folks, so I'm saying this with a heavy heart: this game could've been much better.

Pros:
Good game with huge, detailed levels which push the good ol' Build engine to its limits. Beautiful spritework.

Cons:
There aren't any truly unique weapons:
No Shrinker, Freezethrower, Ripper Heart, Buzzsaw Launcher, Voodoo Doll or Flare Gun type of fun weapon.
There's the Ion Bow, which is unique only in the fact, that the primary fire is very underpowered, but at the same time the alt fire is ridiculously overpowered, to the point of being able to kill bosses in just two full powered bursts on UV (hard) difficulty.
You get 3 types of grenades: all of them differ only in throwing / launching range and damage they deal and, at the same time, you get no rocket launcher.
The Chaingun and Submachine Guns are, functionally, the same: effective, but chew through ammo like no tomorrow, which forces you to use them very sparingly.
This leaves you with the Shotgun, Loverboy Revolver and Baton. The Baton you will almost never use, for obvious reasons. The Shotty and Revolver are the weapons you will use 90% of the time and, thankfully, the ones which are the most satisfying to use. Still, even they get old after some time.

The music, in general, is just there. With few exceptions, there is nothing outstanding, no earworms to be found.
The spider head enemies can suck my dick. They are Protozoid Slimers, if the Slimers were even more annoying, more resistant to damage and dealt not an insignificant amount of damage. So much so, that is seems that the alternative Loverboy firing mode was designed just to counter them.
The flying enemies are way too small and tend to blend in with the background.
The game is long. Really long. What's worse, is that you've seen everything the game has to offer at around the 60% mark and there is a LOT of it left at this point. The last few levels are a chore to get through. The primary reason of this feeling is the fact that the game throws you into these huge, complex maps from the get go. There is no relatively straight forward first level, oh no. The curve of easing the player into these levels is frigging vertical: the very first one is one of the most complicated in the game and Ion Fury does not let up to the very end. The game is, literally, all complex, confusing maps.

TL;DR:
It's a good game and I respect it, but I don't enjoy it much. Still, you should try it.

Satisfying game play. I really feel the trigger and killing spree is so much fun. Besides, a fine reminisence of 90s shooters.
It's a LONG game though.. It could have 1/3 less episodes in m opinion.

This game's quite a bit of fun; if you liked Duke Nukem, you should like this. I'm playing on default difficulty, Wanton Carnage, I think; and the difficulty is moderate. You will get ambushed often, but there's a quick save feature in the game which lets you reload bad situations to try a different approach, which introduces a bit of tactics into the game. The AI is decent and when you reload a save file the enemies won't necessarily behave the same way they did. The secrets are tough to find and I've never gotten them all.

This is not an arena shooter, so you can set your own pace and use cover. On default difficulty health and ammo are plentiful. All of which makes it a pretty good game for an older gamer like myself. The game really scratches an itch I didn't even know I had. I'm really glad I picked this up.

Ion Fury is an entertaining old school FPS, that has a few issues. A few high points too, as the level design is real good for the most part. It is joyful to go through every nook and cranny as there are secrets and fun easter eggs everywhere. Overall, the 8 hour campaign is fun enough to be worth the full price. 4/5

Pros:
+ Build engine games still look good to this day.
+ Weapons are fun to use and sound great.
+ Contains 90s music so hot that it made me pregnant. And I'm a guy.
Cons:
- The game loses some steam in the end, as there is not enough enemy variety and, with some exceptions, the maps kind of blend together. You have seen most of the things the game has to offer by the halfway through.
- Trying to get rid of the the tearing is surprisingly lengthy process. At least it was for me.

Everything I loved in Doom, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, and Quake growing up all in one game that pays homage to the FPS giants of yesteryear. Guns are fun, enemies are memorable, and level design is genius.
I truly believe this deserves a spot amongst the legends that inspired it. Nostalgia done right.

I thought I was done with the FPS genre years ago. Call it genre fatigue. But Ion Fury (along with #7 and last year's Dusk) have completely reinvigorated my enthusiasm for shooters. Perhaps it's how all these throwback titles distill the gameplay loop back to a time when systems were simpler, goals more straightforward and less burdened with modern expectations of expository narrative, upgrade paths, etc. Ion Fury feels like a fast and furious arcade shoot 'em up. Level design is absolutely killer in its intricacy, with more secrets than I'll ever find. The soundtrack pumping. Shocking that it's actually running on a modified 25 year old Build Engine. It's the Duke Nukem sequel we deserved.
