We look for a feeling. Regardless of the physical quality of the game we want it to evoke an emotion. Whether it be the cathartic blood pumping action of Doom, the sense of adventure and discovery through Breath of the Wild, the constant stress and disillusionment in Dead Space, maybe even the melancholy and sorrow of walking through the desolate ruins of Bioshock.
Someone who plays Ghost Recon might get a rush from executing a plan perfectly, becoming one with the environment in a hostile world. The game is only as good as its ability to invoke that feeling.
Every part of HLD is created to invoke a feeling. The feeling of loneliness. Sure you’ll meet a few characters on your journey, you have a hubworld full of them but you never say a word to them. They all see you, but they don’t know you. Even your robot companion is little more than a string of code made to keep you alive.
You travers empty cities, abandoned tunnels and temples. Drifting between the old engines of war, corpses of a long dead world. There is no dialogue to share with the people there, only pictures. Short views into the lives of those that remain. The remnants of that ancient war still tar the fields and splatter the walls. It still inflicts misery on the inhabitants.
It is your duty to stop it, whatever it is, before your body shuts down. A strange illness affects you, causing you to convulse blood. Were you created for this? Were you like the dead machines that surround you? Were you reanimated to fulfill this one final purpose? Made whole just to fall apart again? It’s impossible to say.
Walking between the machinations of war long forgotten, dredging the ground with another layer of blood as you march onwards towards the unknown. Your own mortality weighs heavily on you as with each consecutive fight you grow stronger, and weaker. The sickness becomes more consistent, your breath more constrained as your blood splatters to the floor below. Your sickening wretches echo around the empty foundries, the corpses of the past look on in silent judgment.
Stop for a moment.
Amidst the etchings of an old artillery piece sits an outcrop. The valley sinks forward before you, a lush green canopy spotted with rusted pillars spill out across its plain. A mountain lifts out of the ground like a grand spire beyond it. Creating a wall to hold in the sea of trees. A giant mechanical beast rests against its side. It’s body stilled, eyes rusted and mouth agape. Forever stuck in that final moment of pain.
The wind hums by you, whistling softly in your ear. The grass beneath you is soft, its green strands glisten in the afternoon sun, waving back and forth to the silent hymn of the wind. You sit there a while and listen. For a moment you almost forget about the dead, the blood you’ve spilled, the visions of destruction. It’s all beyond you there. They can’t touch you here. They can’t hurt you.
But soon you will have to move again. To take up arms against the assailing darkness for no other reason then that you were born to. You pick yourself up. Your legs ache and your back groans in protest. The wound on your right shoulder throbs and your sword seems to grow heavier in its hilt.
Your foot hits the soft soil, kicking up dirt as you dash off. A sickening but unwavering determination fills you. You enter into the decrepit city of the dead once more, unsure if you’ll ever leave. You can rest when you're dead drifter.

I always think about the scenery, the moments and how it changed my view on art design. There's a lot that kept me going with the game. I really wonder if the game would sound better or worse, if it was ported to GameMaker 2.
For the non art parts of the game, its gameplay can be harsh with it's trial and error, picking harder to use weapon/upgrade choices and certain parts of the game. You may get feel stuck or lost early in the game.
TLDR: Action exploration game with a compelling art direction, featuring pictographic writing of the story.
I recommend this experience a try regardless of what the user-defined tags say.

So, Hyper Light Drifter: a top down, pixel-art stylised adventure where you go about and do… something involving unlocking cores that lets you get to the centre of the world because… to be truthful I’m not fully sure. I’m unsure if the main character, who seems quite ill, is trying to save the world before they die, or are they trying to save themselves? Still, they go around unlocking crystal pods that permit them to move onwards, but even then the vagueness makes even Dark Souls seem clear and to the point as to what is happening. The entire story of the game is presented via images with zero decipherable language being used anywhere. The scant few NPCs who will ‘talk’ with you tend to show one or more panels depicting some form of actions that occurred. Even then, a lot of these text bubbles do little to fully explain what is actually going on or what they want you to do. Granted the action going on in game is usually quite basic, and most interactions are done via combat or simply activating an object, so you can quite happily ignore all the things people try to communicate to you.
Instantly it is very clear: You will likely love or hate Hyper Light Drifter. Its arty flair for letting the player interpret the ongoing events is so self-indulgent, or even smugly self-satisfied, one can imagine the most dedicated playerbase of the title will likely look down their noses at any criticism and simply state “Of course a person as uncultured as yourself would not understand it! This was made for people with refined tastes!” Similarly the aesthetic, which has some phenomenal visual flair, has the pastel colouring that would tie very well with the vaporwave movement, mixed with the warm and fuzzy post-something-or-other synth soundtrack you have to ask yourself: Do you like Vaporwave or maybe are you an art student? If the answer to the prior is either “no” or “I bloody hate that pretentious crap”, then you should avoid HLD.
Despite that rather polarising take, the game itself is not bad. Unlike a number of Zelda / Metroidvanias, HLD here allows the player to more or less explore any area of the world in whichever order they wish to. There are no moments where a section is cut off due to not having the right equipment, so the mystery of not knowing what is up a cliff that seems unscalable is not there. However there are TONS of secrets! So very many secrets that its almost a criticism as a wall passed a tree could well be a secret hiding spot as it could be… well, just a wall. Thankfully these are signposted well if you keep an eye out as they all have a tell-tale mark nearby. These usually contain crystal pods that can help speed up an area, health packs, extra weapons or keys and sometimes upgrade chips to help boost your character. The upgrades are, in a very Dark Souls manner, not essential, but help a lot, ranging from the mundane heathpack upgrades to new dashing moves and attacks.
General gameplay is a mix of ranged and melee. While nothing ground-breaking, and in most cases not massively satisfying, it mixes things up by having the ranged weaponry charge when you do melee attacks. This is a nice twist as it keeps the action moving along and encourages forward movement rather than backtracking for ammo. That said I cant imagine folks would be buying this purely for the combat though.
Overall Hyper Light Drifter is a tough title to advise correctly. As a game its generally fine, and I would say at its core its an interesting game, but its tone in aesthetic and storytelling is so utterly niche you will either love it or hate it. I’m erring on the side or recommend, but just only on one, TL:DR condition:
TL:DR – Can you tolerate something that could be considered “arty hipster indulgence”?
Yes? Grab HLD! You’ll love it to bits!
No? Avoid as its pretentiousness will drive you nuts!

This games combat is very distinguished, akin to other games, it requires precise timing and focus. (Unless you're playing the Alt character, in which case you just kinda spam attack and pistol for the frame cancel and near permanent stun on bosses.)
Boss rush as a separate entity from the save files is probably the best feature that is external from the core gameplay. Other titles, such as Binding of Isaac or Hollow Knight have the Boss Rush modes as a part of the gameplay or a part of the game save files, making the point of having the boss rush as an inclusive part of the game. Having the boss rush as a separate menu option is very unique and genuinely a nice option as you can change your difficulty and not have it be based on your items or equipment from a specific game file.
All in all, I truly love this game. I constantly pick it up if i have an hour or two to kill and will speedrun getting to the final boss. As of right now, while it may not be a world record, I can achieve this in 1:15:00. I look forward to playing more of the game to improve this time and share the game with my friends and hopefully make a positive impact on someone deciding to buy the game.
Enjoy the game!

HLD is a three quarters view action/exploration game with impressive pixel graphics and excellent sound design. There is a central hub area, and the world is broken up into four sections. Each section has 8 triforce-esque pieces to collect, but you only need to collect 4 to move on. There are many, many hidden paths, some absolutely deviously hidden away, and you will need to find them all to get all the pieces, and keys, and stone tablets, etc.
The reason I have to make up names for everything in HLD is because there is no text in the game. Everything is told via cinemas, or pictures, or diagrams. It's an interesting choice, and goes along with the spartan/melancholy mood and design of the game, but there are a lot of times it gets in the way. At times it can be difficult to piece together what is going on, which sort of lowers the stakes of everything. Additionally, figuring out some of the advanced moves, and what buying certain upgrades does, can be perplexing. I would say the choice is a net negative overall.
The combat in HLD is great. You have a dash, a sword, and a gun. You need to use them well, the combat is difficult, but fair. The bosses are excellent as well.
I enjoyed my time with Hyper Light Drifter. Its post apocalyptic aesthetic is remarkably well done, it is beautiful, and lonely, and foreboding in equal measure, while staying varied as well. I did not 100% complete the game, as it is difficult to find all the secrets, and I do not like using guides, but I did beat all the bosses and get the credits to roll.

Introduction
Hyper Light Drifter is an action adventure with a focus on exploration. It offers a singleplayer and a split-screen co-op.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
+ Interesting exploration with lots of well-hidden secrets
+ Intense combat encounters
+ Good pixel art, that doesn’t hurt your eyes
Cons:
- Upgrades only make the game easier without opening paths to new challenges
- Because even the setup of the story is unclear, there’s not enough motivation to overcome difficulties
- If you want to use chain dash ability, you must play on 30 FPS
Story
The story follows a nameless protagonist and his robot side-kick on their quest to restore power to an ancient machine. Or it can be about something else, because the game has no text at all. You can gather something from the pictures some of the characters show you and that’s all you get. Anyway, the story isn’t the focus of the game.
Gameplay
After a short tutorial you are thrown into an open-world consisting of four locations. You have to find four artifacts in each location and defeat a boss. The game doesn’t hold your hand, so you can do your objectives in any order you like and there are multiple paths to get to each objective as well as some secrets hidden along the way. Some of which are very well-hidden. The combat is very fast paced and has you jumping around battlefield evading enemy attacks and jumping back to do some damage.
As you progress you can unlock different abilities that will make your life easier. Like the ability to reflect bullets or invulnerability while dodging. There's a very fun chain dash ability that allows you to travel very fast, but it is very hard to pull off. Seems like the problem is tied to FPS, it only works well when you play in 30 FPS mode. Keep it in mind if you have trouble. There aren’t any abilities that unlock new paths in the world or greatly influence your playstyle, which is a bit disappointing.
I was very much in love with this game at first, but around halfway through it became too easy, because of all the abilities I’ve acquired and the game just didn’t want to up the challenge.
Conclusion
If you like exploration games with a bit of combat, then get it. The playthrough on normal takes about 6 hours and there’s a new game+ mode with a harder difficulty, if you want to get out as much as you can from the game.

In 2021 this game is average at best
-The reviews I read all glorified and overly hyped this game, and I can only figure its because I am playing it years later when other games have made similar and better products with more explanation in regards to immersive story and gameplay. Game is still Ok, but man the reviews I read for this made me think it was at least above average and sadly it is not.

Since then I have 100% this game 6 times. This game is absolutely BRILLIANT in just about every aspect. You play as a wandering medic/warrior of sorts in an unfamiliar land with no means of communicating with anyone, and are plagued by a mysterious ailment. Everything about this game seeks to put you in the shoes of this character as much as possible and immerse you in it's world. The visuals are gorgeous, filled with vibrant pinks, deep blues, and lush greens. The sound design makes unfamiliar and futuristic surroundings into immersive, tangible worlds. And I'd be crazy if I didn't talk about how great the gameplay is. The core mechanics of this game are always the same (drifting, slashing, and shooting) but it's builds on it with upgrades that keep it fresh without being overpowered. It's very tight, responsive, and fast paced. It's difficult but never overwhelming. While fighting the hordes of enemies this game throws at you, you have to strategize and try to keep track of who's doing what in order to methodically chip away at them. It's incredibly rewarding and I never got angry while playing, no matter how many times I died. It's nothing but fun and engaging all around.
All in all I cannot recommend this game enough. Usually, even for my favorite games, I play them through once and rarely come back. This game is different. No matter how many times I comb through the world in this game I always have the same feelings of wonder and excitement whenever I discover a new area or beat a tough battle. And whenever I'm not doing those things, the slow, peaceful ambiance of the worlds keeps me going onto the next thing. And Ironically, by playing the game multiple times I have wound up figuring out some of the lore I was so hungry for in my first playthrough. All just theories and ideas though. Every time I've tried to look up any solid answers it feels wrong somehow. Like knowing more than I've found in the game by myself as the drifter hurts the immersion.
If you haven't yet, PLAY HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER.

I loved elements of this and hated others. Couldn't be bothered to do the final fight or hoard mode as the combat, while good at times, is also deeply flawed and annoying at other times, like both of those. The main thing to enjoy in the game is the exploration and finding secrets, but there's no more of that once you reach that stage, so why bother?
The exploration really is great, although it's tempered by asking you to take loads of leaps of faith where if there's nothing quite where you jumped then you take damage (and health packs are a PITA to get back at times, while ridiculously abundant at others).
The story, and a lot of the game mechanics, are not presented in a way you can make any sense of without going outside of the game. This made me not care about the plot, but the fact I had an ability that was needed and yet I didn't know I could do that thing or how to activate it until I gave up in a part that required it and looked on forums... that's just bad game design. There's being obscure, and then there's failing to give the player information they need.
It's a little ridiculous that the game has a fairly broken input system that completely ignores button pushes at times, yet also requires you to maintain sub-second accurate rhythm to do certain things. It just felt broken in that regard. (And it really is broken, not just me. I used an AutoHotkey script to do a certain challenge which is a complete piss-take with the broken controls, and found it was impossible to get beyond a certain point, whether using the script or doing it by hand, if I was moving up and down instead of side to side on the screen, which shouldn't matter. Something is wrong with the game, yet it has challenges which are essentially impossible without exploits or outside knowledge.)
Really nice music by DisasterPeace. If you've played Fez, you'll instantly know it's by the same person.
The developers have taken Satan Sweeney's money and made their next game exclusive to his personal games shelf that no one wants to use because Sweeney is an ahole and his store is even more half-baked than Steam (which is saying something!), so the devs and anything else they ever do in their careers is all dead to me anyway. I wouldn't have even started the game had I known this initially, but since I already had it and was 1/4 the way through I kept going.

+Great art style even with being a low bit game several locations and the cutscenes look really good and if anything is one of the best looking 8-bit and or 16 bit games
+God tier soundtrack just completely amazing
+Lots of secrets hidden all throughout the game
+Collectibles
+Different outfits
+Multiple save files
+Boss Rush mode which is an alternative gamemode after beating the game which allows you to just fight all the bosses as fast as you can
+Horde Mode which is a hidden challenge unlocked after beating the game where you have to fight against waves of enemies and try to survive as long as possible
+Tons of upgrades, various guns, and lots of attack styles
+Remote Play
+Local co-op which if anything seems to make the game 100x easier as the co-op partner and just keep respawning again and again
+Full controller support which imo this game is better with a controller
+Short but has a lot of side activities and side gamemodes you can do
-Initially struggled to get the chain dash upgrade to work properly as now I can do it so easily but I was pressing A… A and it wouldn’t activate and I understand that you have to sort of pause and or press the button slower than normal beside mashing it yet, still struggling initially to get it to activate. This was one of the things I liked and disliked about the game is how vague and ambiguous it is on explaining things in the game as it pretty much expects you to figure out everything yourself with no real tutorials besides the initial one in the beginning. Yes it tells you to press the A button twice but it still wouldn’t work for me at times and struggled as several other discussions and YouTube videos did a great job at explaining how to do it poorly.
-The West Side boss as a whole made me cry more than I’d like to admit
-NG+ reduces your health to 2 health states and about the vast majority of the enemies and bosses can use an attack that deals 2 damage basically making the entire NG+ playthrough an insta kill playthrough. It was just really frustrating at times, especially going against the Northern boss who just felt completely unfair on NG+ as he would attack so fast and every attack was a 2 damage hit so you had to go through his entire fight without taking any damage whatsoever. He would use multiple attacks at once and leave barely any room to deal any damage to him. Just a god awful fight imo hated every moment of it every other boss on NG+ I had no legit issues with.
-In regards to certain achievements the hidden one to “tame” an animal I feel may be broken and doesn’t seem to unlock or the requirements don’t seem to be explained well enough, the achievement to die 1000 times is a nice waste of time imo as even after playing through the game 3 times and doing several side related content I still didn’t get it which simply required me to just keep running into a room and killing myself about a couple hundred times which was a lot of fun. Then of course you have the infamous “beat the entire game without dying once” achievement which I think in any game is just the developers way of torturing their players and anyone trying to 100% the game as I don’t see how anyone could really find an achievement like this fun imo. After doing a similar achievement in Outlast 2 and giving 30+ attempts and spending about 10+ hours for a single achievement I really just hate achievements like this lol
-Horde Mode is cool however, I just wish they didn’t spam the 2 damage enemies everywhere which just made things so difficult as there would also be 2 enemies spamming projectiles and about 1-2 charging you at the same time. Even better was when they’d spawn and immediately charge into you giving you no time to react or prevent being hit.
I really liked Hyper Light Drifter I remember seeing it on the store page awhile ago and it just looked so cool and knew I had to get it even though it doesn’t seem like the typical kind of game I usually play but, I’m really glad I got it as it’s really fantastic in pretty much every way although several portions I would say are very difficult. Don’t buy this game if you aren’t expecting a challenge as this game is definitely frustrating when regarding several of the additional content besides just playing the game normally which is for the most part no problem. The game even has a “Souls Like” tag so yeah I guess this game is similar to Dark Souls. I also think this game feels a bit overpriced imo as I’m sure most players probably just play through the game once and quit so 3-4 hour game for $20 seems like a lot even with its additional content. Ik that it's an indie game and I’m not bashing it for being so much I personally just feel like it's kinda a lot.

+ tight controls and dynamic, satisfying combat
+ no handholding
+ cryptic and open to interpretation storytelling via imagery rather than words
+ great soundtrack
+ atmosphere and aesthetic
+ lots of secrets and hidden stuff
- character becomes hard to see in the thick of things when theres a lot going on on the screen, could use better mechanics for keeping track where your dude is at
- lack of rebindable controls, had to use steam controller config for that
- bosses could be harder

This gets old very quickly though once you realise how clunky the combat is - certain environmental hazards also don't behave consistently and it's very easy to get damage locked as there are an absolute excess of mandatory animations that play out when you take damage or dash, getting you into situations that kill you without it directly being your fault, which can cause you to fail an entire area, or even several depending on where it happened.
In a game based on timing this felt extremely frustrating to the point of wanting to stop playing entirely. That being said I still recommend this as the art, exploration and music, oh my gosh, the music - are all incredible elements that make the game worth buying. The opening and closing cutscenes are chilling, too, if you can keep up with the abstract narrative delivery and environmental storytelling.
Very much looking forward to Solar Ash.

That leads me to the most rewarding aspect of the game, the storytelling. As others have pointed out, this game is particularly noteworthy for it's very creative visual storytelling. Everywhere in this game there are visuals that seem to show the remnants of catastrophic events, destroyed civilizations, and survivors of unspeakable violence. These stories are told through the visuals in such a way as to evoke empathy and the feelings of loss that come the losing one's home to violence.
The full story can only be truly appreciated with the music to go along with it. Disasterpiece has written music for this game that does not simply accompany the visuals but become apart of the world. His merging of retro electronic and classical piano, in particular the sounds of Claude Debussy, are as much a part of the story as the visuals, and purchasing this game with the soundtrack is a must.
If you want a game that is art, and you want a game that is challenging and full of rewarding exploration, this game is for you. If you prefer casual games without the requirement for a great deal of manual dexterity, this might not be a good choice for you.

...and play it you should!
The game mechanics are crisp, the boss fights are exciting, and the player upgrades are fun to use yet challenging to acquire due to the collection of the necessary upgrade slot pieces. The game doesn't take too terribly long to beat but feels satisfying nonetheless - I'd say I put around 10 hours into the game to beat it; I played casually, spent a fair amount of time searching for the 'upgrade pieces' (the in-game map could be better...) and definitely found myself stuck on platforming puzzles on more than one occasion!
A great value game! Definitely worth considering a pick-up the next time it's on sale!

I will say however, I can tell why some people dislike the game solely due to the fact that the game really requires you (well, me at least, anyway) to search up how to pass different areas on google, simply because this game lacks a proper starter guide hard coded into the game. no tutorial, no nothing. you are thrown into this crazy cutscene of a guy retching black monstrosities, and then there's a dog and suddenly this big 40 foot wall appears out of thin air. It's hard to get a grasp on the story and mechanics, and can knock players off the game quite easily. I can see heart machine's thought process through it though, trying to make a game that you can take your own way, and interpret however you want. but that's hard to put into practice, and although i enjoyed it, some others may not.
good buy tho, lit soundtrack and amazing wallpaper worthy graphics, they really hit the nail on the head with that aspect at least

Pixel art in this game is just beautiful and gorgeous. I often stopped and watched my surroundings with beautiful music in the background. Soundtrack of this game is incredible and it fits very well with the style of the game.
Combat is challenging and this game lets player choose how they want to fight. Enemies and bosses have patters and they never feel unfair to fight.

The gameplay and combat already in some ways feel a bit dated, with a manageable bit of klunk to dodging and attacking, and unlockable abilities that are of questionable use and never all that exciting. It's fine.
Where the game excels is in its level design and rhythm of exploration, which is extraordinary. Once you learn to recognize the 'tells' of the secrets, you start branching off the main path, finding resources, solving A to B puzzles, and expanding the wonderful ambiance of a the world. I found the pacing, accessibility, and rewardingness of this to be remarkably relaxing. (I would recommend using a secrets guide the first 'world' to get a sense for the next few worlds.)
The other great part of this game was its world. Each unique biome you explore has had its own cataclysm in the distant or near past (or both), and the sense of being in the trashy remnant of an apocalyptic world creates a sense of tension, horror, and renewal, all at once. The soundtrack never really grabbed me, but even my jaded self was moved by a setpiece's horror or beauty.
If you're looking for crisp combat and polish, you're probably better off playing a modern, big-budget game like Hades or something. If you want to go off the gaming beaten path a bit, and are willing to flow with an imperfect put adeptly designed game, you'll probably find this rewarding.

Pros:
- Pixel animation is very well done and fluid
- The music, louder the better
- Absence of texts and dialogues is part of what makes the storytelling really good, and the story is even better if you know a bit about its creator
Cons:
- The infinite dash mechanic is nice but mainly adds an unnecessary difficulty
- Some bosses and enemies have weird hitboxes which more often than not work against you

Great atmosphere. It does a great job of creating atmosphere with the music, the layout and how the areas are presented to you. You really get the feeling that things have happened in this place. The music is one of the biggest strengths of this game. It can be a bit depressing and slow but it's supposed to be. I think it actually made me depressed after having played this game for a whole day although that could be because I didn't get anything else done! :P
BEWARE, the storytelling is very, very cryptic. At least Dark Souls has dialogue which is entirely absent in this game, no spoken words at all. The storytelling is done through visuals and music only but is done very well. Don't expect much of a storyline here. Must look it up in the web if you're interested.
Hope you like pixel-graphics! This is a game that harkens back to the days of 8 / 16 bit games but also takes advantage of today's capabilities and is animated beautifully!!
I'm currently trying to get all the achievements
Feel free to message me about the game! :D

I've played this game through quite a few times here, just completed my 4th run and I would highly recommend this game! This game has an atmosphere that I really haven't ever gotten from anything else, despite the pixel style, this game still manages to creep me out with its dark, post-apocalyptic setting and that certainly doesn't distract from the core mechanics of the game; it took me a little bit to get used to, but the combat is sharp, punchy (especially when you get the big sword ability) and really scratched my fix for a 'souls-like' game on a low-end pc, although I do feel this is in its own category of metroidsoulsvania?? I have no good place to put this in.
Even after 4 play-throughs I still am finding secrets to this game and its truly a joy to explore the world Atomic-Heart have created.
Yes Chain-dashing is fucking impossible and I've had my fair share of slightly 'cheap' deaths, but I do not review games often, unless I feel very strongly about them, and this game is up there with my favourites.

HLD focuses on two main things: Exploration, and Improvement. It very intelligently uses the logic of a 3D game in it's 2D environments, resulting in the player checking every corner of every little rock or tree, which will more often than not actually lead to something interesting. This philosophy of using your abilities for exploration is constantly rewarding- and keeps the player curious and interested at every turn.
The combat and the aforementioned abilities also have amazing synergy, making good execution feel just as good as defeating the enemies. In HLD you'll find yourself facing many difficult challenges, whether it be bosses, or a section of a dungeon. But with all of the tools that the game neatly lays out for you, you have an infinite amount of ways to approach a given challenge. And the game sticks with player freedom all the way through.
And one last thing, the story of HLD is abstract, and you will never get any direct answers to any of your questions. It's all up to your interpretation.
Long story short- Buy this game. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and make sure you have a controller.

But what stood out to me most was how satisfied I felt exploring the world. I would spot a ledge off in the distance and wonder how to get there, then eventually find the path and be rewarded with upgrade materials or other goodies. While other games (especially Metroidvanias) will tease you with places you can't access yet, in Hyper Light Drifter most all places I saw could be reached just by exploring my current surroundings a bit more carefully. I don't know why it felt so good to discover all the secret nooks and crannies, but I can't deny how fun it was.

Also, you need to find super-secret-hidden-rooms in order to advance the story without any help whatsoever. These secret rooms have a single tell, BUT you have to figure out the tell on your own. I spent a frustrating hour looking for the path forward in this somewhat open-world game, only to discover one small segment of a wall in a room in a dungeon I already beat was actually a hidden room's doorway that contained the key I needed to keep going forward. That isn't puzzle solving, or good difficulty. That is just bad game design.
These minor annoyances eroded my patience for the difficult combat. Thankfully, each combat encounter is it's own checkpoint, which lets you focus on learning to get better instead of replaying a bunch of annoying encounters to get to the tough one. I really dislike how the bomb throw has a slight delay, and the timing window for using the upgraded dash. It feels artificially difficult. There is also inconsistent I-frames for the enemies.
Although I am motivated to get through the content, the entire time I play I am also being aggravated by all the minor flaws that make me feel powerless. I go between muttering curses under my breath at how stupid some aspects of the game and being enraptured by its gameplay and overall design. I think you should give this game a chance, but if you dislike difficult games, you are going to be in for a tough ride. And dont be afraid to look stuff up if you get stuck. That stupid secret room...
( I am about half way through the game)

This game is cool, its got wonderful music, visuals, level design, an interestingly crafted world. Ive heard about how the game was made and was aware of the self-reference by the developer and for that they have my undying respect (you should look this up if you arent aware). Despite this, I found the gameplay... Not the greatest but nowhere near poor, but had me a little unmotivated and kind of wishing the game would be over sooner. I wouldnt say I particularly loved the game but i did like it. It was mysterious and strange cool.
I do recommend it, but only if youre really interested.

Although there isn't a single line of dialogue in the game, the story still sucks you in with beautiful cut scenes, subtle framing, and masterful atmosphere. There are so many moments in this game that will stick with me forever. It's visually stunning, though the Escheresque backgrounds are sometimes not easy to read, the soundtrack works well, but the controls just feel clunky. The hour I spent was not fun, and maybe I'll go back to it later, but I feel no urge to do so.
Also, even though the game can be played in windowed mode, there is no way to move it nor any multiscreen support, so I cannot play the game on the monitor I want, it's a no go for me.

Pros:
+++Beautiful, sound warping, and speaker morphing OST (seriously it's amazing)
+++Amazing and grand pixel art
++Fun, unique, and smooth fighting mechanics. I haven't seen a dash mechanic like that in any game before.
+Story and Lore. Both are a little simple but are interesting to decipher throughout the game.
++Very well balanced. Every section has it's own difficulties regardless of your upgrades. However the main mechanic which is the dash within the game is skill based as you get used to the timing so with skill you can overcome your difficulties.
++MANY SECRETS. Literally secrets everywhere
Cons:
I actually can't think of many cons to this game. It's very well constructed and fun. Maybe the dash mechanic is wonky to figure out but overall if you like these types of games, you won't find many faults. If you don't like these types of games you just won't find it as fun. That's about it.

The lack of dialogue only adds to the atmosphere.
The story doesn't need dialogue.
it only needs to be felt.
And that same feeling keeps egging you on to know more, even if you don't understand what is happening.
And that is what drives you forward.
This piece balances both Art and gameplay beautifully.
I can tell it was made with alot of love.

Pros:
- The combat is simply fantastic, very fast paced. The boss fights are all very unique and challenging, so it's satisfying when you beat them.
- Varied areas and enemies, so you will never feel the game being repetitive.
- The graphics and soundtrack are really nice, this game will definitely age well.
Cons:
- The game is short. There's barely any history and I don't think there's any text ingame, like at all.
- The map could be better, it can be rather confusing sometimes.
- Too many secret areas and locked doors that are only accessible later in the game when you find all the secret pieces needed to unlock them. For completionists, get ready to place a guide on a second screen and consult it frequently.

I only have two complaints:
1. No cloud saving. Really atrocious but, if I recall, it had something to do with the save file size. Massive let down, as this includes NG+ and optional post-game challenges that it would be nice to have backed up forever.
2. Feels best when played with a controller but aiming dashes with the stick feels finicky at times. There were a few time/aim specific challenges for which I switched to KBM as a result.

Character design is in line with the world. The main protagonist is kind of cool and I really enjoyed everything on the screen.
Story is there but it's hard to make out details. Intro cinematic gives you enough information and there are NPCs that can tell you a bit more about their lives but not much about the events in the world.
Gameplay is very good. Simple controls and enough variety of enemies and weapons to make you have fun.
I loved sound design and music in this game. I can't overstate how awesome is it and how much it helps to build the atmosphere. Full marks here.
Please note that this is difficult game. Not Dark Souls difficult but it's pretty difficult. Killing enemies is satisfying and I enjoyed combat quite a lot (apart from one or two bosses when it was kind of annoying).
But I cannot say that there are no things to dislike... One of my major gripes is that some things are hidden to well. I once found a secret completely by accident because there was no visual cue. Enemies respawn making back-tracking unnecessarily inconvenient. And it's not like you can level-up by killing enemies so I don't see why they did it this way. And back-track you will if you missed some item and want to go back. Map won't be of help either. Maybe it's just me but dashing didn't seem to work properly sometimes.
Also what's with these achievements? Someone apparently thought it would be fun to
die 1 000 times
to get an achievement.
But I still think that this is a great game and it's worth your time and money if you're into pixel-retro-isometric hack-and-slash. It was great playing this game and I can't wait to see their next game Solar Ash.

The art is beautiful, and so is the music.
The combat is fun and fair but difficult, and you'll definitely die a lot. When you do finally beat a boss though, it really makes you feel like a badass B)
There's secrets everywhere, and everything you find is useful.
As you explore, you get a feeling of loneliness. Aside from maybe 8 words in the tutorial to teach you basic controls, this game has no text. No dialogue. Nothing. When you talk to another character, you get a picture of what they're telling you that you need to interpret.
Also, don't play this if you're colorblind.
TL;DR: Worst game I've ever played, 0/10. Disgraceful.

This aesthetic also bleeds into the narrative atmosphere as a whole. After all, there is no explicit lore, worldbuilding or any definite story been told, and that contributes greatly to the sense of contemplation the entire game gives you. It reminds me a lot of Shadow of The Colossus. The biggest difference being that HLD leaves things so open that it can feel frustrating at the end, but it's not something which would ruin the experience, IMHO.
The hack-n-slash gameplay (and I would also include the plataforming mechanics to this) is intuitive once you get familirized with it; however, it can feel confusing and a little stiff at times thanks to how the dash works. This can give the illusion of tedium to the gemaplay, especially if you don't invest in perks right from the start, but the learning curve is so satisfying you can almost always come up with ways to spice things up while hacking through a group of enimies.
My biggest problem with HLD is how non-challeging it is. I barely died at all during my run, and the bosses are usually anticlimactic.

This game is awesome, although challenging. Every boss has strengths and weaknesses and there are a plethora of ways to tackle them, giving you many options to kill them in your way. The soundtrack is amazing, giving me some serious Blade Runner vibes. The art is beathtaking and the levels are filled with secrets in every corner that reward you for exploring. Storytelling relies solely on pictures without the need for narration. This enhances the overall atmosphere of the games, IMO.

Overall, Hyper Light Drifter is a great game – my only gripe with it is that, even though most of its elements are individually airtight, it ends up feeling less than the sum of its parts. For me, it mostly has to do with the storytelling – it’s very hard to become emotionally invested in the protagonist’s journey because there is no real character development going on beyond some bare essentials. I understand that the minimalism is deliberate, I get the whole “stranger in a strange land” thing, but I still can’t help but think the game shot itself in the foot by trying to tell a personal story in such a detached manner, and I feel sad that there was very little connection to the Drifter’s character to really drive the greatness home.
Even though this kind of ended on a sour note, I still enjoyed my time with this game a lot and I would absolutely recommend buying it. The narrative choices didn’t work for me, but they might very well work for you, and there are so many other things done right you won’t leave disappointed either way.

There are many, many secrets in the game, meaning that it will take a long time, possibly even 2 or more playthroughs to find everything, but you unlock a lot of cool stuff by finding everything so in the end it's worth it.
The combat is a lot more challenging than it first appears, and there is some fun and challenging extra content to unlock after completing the game for the first time which is sure to keep you playing for some time.
If you like stories in your games however, then Hyper Light Drifter is a strange one. It definitely has a story, but the lack of dialogue, and even text, makes one have to fill in all of the gaps of what you're shown with your imagination and understanding of the very little that is given to you in that regard. It's very much like Dark Souls in that the atmosphere, the enemies, and the things you find while traversing the different areas of the game are what make up the bulk of the storytelling.
Great game, easily recommend it to anyone as one of the best kick-starters ever made.
