Game is bugged, opponents can also play in closed Saverom glitch.
Coop mode can only be found with two players no more.

Sehr gutes Zombiespiel, das in isometrischer Sicht gespielt wird.
Mit XBOX Controller lässt sich das Spiel klasse steuern und arbeitet vorbildlich präzise.

Die Grafik ist hübsch, auch wenn die Splatter-Effekte etwas mehr Liebe vertragen könnten 
Der Sound ist prima, und der Sprecher für das „Handbuch“ ist perfekt in Szene gesetzt 

Es gibt wirklich unglaublich viel zu entdecken, zu basteln und natürlich zu meucheln ….
Im Co-Op macht das Spiel dann wirklich alles richtig, wir hatten richtig viel Spass !

Die teilweise sehr schlechten Metakritiken kann ich mal gar nicht nachvollziehen,
es ist sicherlich kein Vollpreisspiel, aber für diesen Preis ein toller Zeitvertreib,

So, indie games, huh? Well, technically, at the moment I write this review, Eko Software is not independent anymore (in 2018, they were purchased by Nacon, who just decided to go big and already purchased Cyanide, creators of Styx series), but back in 2013, they still were. Well, at least as far as I know. And it's weird. I mean, despite How to Survive looking painfully cheap, the guys are actually pretty experienced. At least, when it's about the company's name, since Eko Software was established in 1999 and under the different publishers worked on games like Gift, Woody Woodpecker: Escape from Buzz Buzzard Park, Kaan: Barbarian's Blade, Th3 Plan, a couple of Garfield games and so on. In other words, you lived in Europe (yes, many of those games were only published in Europe) and had PS2 back in the days? You probably know the guys. And even though, obviously, the company went through a lot of changes since them, we still have people who worked on Kaan, Th3 Plan and the others here. Sounds promising, right? I mean, seriously, we have people with at least 14 years of experience here. Sometimes, even more, since production director here, Jean-Georges Levieux, started as a trainee programmer in SEGA Saturn version of Ubisoft's Rayman (you know, the first one, which was hard as F). In other words, it's the guys who were with us since forever. Like I said, it totally sounds promising. But guess what?

The funniest thing about How to Survive is that it feels... noobish. Painfully noobish actually. Sure, Eko Software games were never groundbreaking. They were always mediocre at best (their very best games were usually getting 60 out of 100 by both critics and audience), but they were never... you know. Bubsy 3D. And yes, I did play them all. Even that bloody Strawberry Shortcake game (don't ask, that's just me being me). Yes, quite a lot of their games were poor. Very poor. And yet, they weren't even close to what we had in Bubsy 3D. Now, here comes How to Survive and... that's it. That's exactly it. It's a f*cking Bubsy. A f*cking bobcat appeared in Darth Vader's suit and said “Eko, I'm your father!”. In Bobcat Goldthwait's voice. Don't mind what's happening in my head (some people are that screwed up, deal with it), you've got the idea. Since the very first seconds, How to Survive feels terrible. Absolutely. Completely. Terrible. It looks ugly, controls are clunky, level design is a mess... Good gosh, y'all...

But OK, OK. You've got the idea. It's a terribly made game, which feels like it was made by a bunch of school kids, not an old team of experienced people. But what's about the game itself? What's it all about? Well, as you can easily guess, How to Survive is a survival game. Like... duh! Long story short, you and the other players (even though technically, you're free to play this game alone, it's strongly recommended to play with friends in co-op) arrive at the island and should do a series of basic quests. You'll travel from island to island (go to the boat, interact with it, enjoy your next location), you'll look for certain items, you'll kill the enemies, repeat until it'll all end. Sounds simple, bu-u-ut... since it's a survival game, you'll need to drink, eat and craft sh*t. You know the drill. Imagine your typical survival thing, make it as dumb and limited as possible, cover it all in diagonal-down perspective and that'll be it. That's How to Survive.

The thing about this game is that, aside from other things, it feels like nobody was really excited about it. It's like some smartass decided to make a survival game, but their creativity ended exactly there. At the very beginning. You walk around, you kill zombies, you craft stuff and... what? Well, nothing. That's it. That's the entire How to Survive. Well, as long as we're not talking 'bout DLC (yes, this piece of crap actually offers tons of DLC), which adds some new modes, but we're not talking about DLC here. And when it's about the base game... that's it. There's pretty much nothing else to talk about. It's a terribly made, painfully limited and clunky game with nothing special about it. Naturally, the “story” is just a bunch of shallow NPCs with “blah-blah-blah” text (some guy is asking for some herbs, some lady's looking for her cat, you know the drill, it's just a bunch of fillers, not the real deal), while when it's about co-op...

Well, when it's about co-op, it's time for us to return to what I've already said above. See, this game? It's limited as F. So, instead of having some addicting fun collecting and combining tons of different items, in this game you and your friends will just suffer while trying to understand where to get certain items in order to progress. Because yes, this game can be very confusing. And not because it's a complicated experience. Exactly the opposite, because it's so dumb, limited and terribly made that sometimes it's just hard to see exactly what does it want from you. Again and again, you'll need to look for stuff without proper clues about where to look. Can't say it'll happen all the time, but still, it shows exactly how bad this game is. And yes, this game sure knows how to be an ass. And it's not only about the progression. It's about everything. Literally. Everything. Here's an example for you. At some point, you'll need to start crafting Molotov cocktails in order to destroy barricades (lame attempt to make some sort of Zelda-like progression). It goes like this: you find the empty bottle, you bring it to gasoline tank, you find some rag and fertilizer, and you combine all that crap together (before you ask, no, that's not how things work in real life, don't try it at home). Just to make a single Molly. Naturally, nobody tells you where to find such things, so... enjoy your free roaming. But OK, you've got your Molly, now you need to destroy the barricade with it, but guess what? You've missed. The barricade is still there and you wasted your Molotov. And no, not because you suck (you do, but that's not the reason, lol). But because aiming mechanics... * sigh *. Yeah. Cheap crap is cheap. Like everything else in How to Survive.

In other words, there's only one reason I'm writing such a long review here. The reason is – Eko Software played a part in my life. Can't say it was a major part, sure, but still, eating cheap pizza, consuming tons of soda and watching Gadget & Gadgetinis, while playing Eko's PS2 game based on it? It was a thing. And I do feel nostalgic about all that. And therefore, I can't help but feel... you know. Personally insulted here. If How to Survive was made by a couple of school kids nobody cares about? I'd be, like, “OK, whatever, it's yet another failed indie project”. I mean, it's not like you can surprise somebody with a cheap and crappy survival game here, in Steam, right? The store is full of them. But since it's Eko Software we're talking about... Again, they never made good games. Can't even name one that I can actually recommend to the others for real. But seeing them hitting the rock bottom? It's just... sad. Really, really sad... Dixi.

It nearly took 2 yrs for my steam buddy & me to finish this game. We had begun playing this game in 2019 the hardest mode (ironman mode). The game was somewhat interesting but wasn't thrilling enough for both of us to finish it in one queue. Somehow, after that day we didn't really feel like playing it and left it there like 2 yrs until 2 days ago.
It's been almost 10 yrs since this game came out and even the sequel exists, but the essence of whole zombie survival vibe is lit. Playing the whole scenario wasn't so bad afterall.
The story was kinda okay. There's a good twist in the story, full voice over and not so awkward plot-line. There are a lot of fetch quests though. It was pretty frustrating moving place to place so many times. I would have given up if I had played it solo.
There are some variation of the infested. It feels like left for dead for some reason. Tanker, Boomer-like creature appears and the zombie sounds are very similar but there are also infested deer and ostriches so not total rip-off.
You can make tons of weapons with lots of combination. Guns and bows look like the best choice at first, but getting the boomerang is the key. We wouldn't be able to finish the game with just using bows and guns because you have to fetch the ammo and arrows all the time and that's real pain in the ass.
The game's a bit clunky time to time you might get some lagging moment but it's bearable. Sometimes saves got mixed up but starting over the game did fix the issue so I had no problem playing this game the whole time.
So, in short, it's not a game so entertaining that you would finish it right away, but somewhat interesting enough to remember finishing it and actually doing it 2 yrs later.

이 겜을 다하는데 약 2년의 세월이 걸렸다. 2019년에 시작하긴 했는데, 하루만 해보고 뭔가 계속 해야겠다는 느낌은 없어서 약 2년간 놔뒀다가 이틀전에 다 꺴다.
이겜은 나온지 10년정도 되었고 2탄도 나왔지만, 좀비 서바이벌 분위기는 잘 살아있는 편이다. 시나리오 했을떄 나쁘지 않았음.
스토리는 걍 괜찮은 편이다. 스토리에 반전이 있고 성우가 다 보이스를 했으며 스토리가 어색하진 않다. 근데 저기로 가서 뭐 아이템 얻어서 갖고와달라는 퀘스트가 조낸 많음. 혼자했으면 아마 도중에 때려쳤을것.
좀비도 어느정도 색다른 면이 많은 편이다. 레포데같은 느낌이 있긴 하다. 부머, 탱커같은 좀비가 있고 소리같은게 레포데같은데, 감염된 타조나 사슴같은것도 나오니까 완전 베낀건 아닌건 확실.
무기같은 걸 여러 콤비네이션이 있어 많이 만들수 있는데 일단 처음엔 총하고 화살이 갓갓같은데 사실은 부메랑이 짱임. 총하고 화살은 계속 총알하고 화살 줍고 해야되서 개짱남.
개임을 하다보면 약간 렉이 걸리긴 한다 근데 막 못할 정도는 아님. 세이브도 가끔 이상할때 있는데 껐다 키면 해결됨 그부분에선 아무런 문제가 없었음.
짧게 말하면 하루만에 끝낼만큼 재밌는 겜은 아닌데 2년 뒤에 다시 돌아와서 끝내야지 생각을 하고 실제 끝내게 할정도의 매력은 있는 겜이다.

This game is one of the best games ive ever played. It contains everything i want, from zombies to complicated missions to explosive arrows and guns. Trying to survive in this game is challenging but never impossible.

Clearing the steam backlog - I duunno how this had a very positive reviews when I bought it and it has only aged even worse.

Tedious, clunky combat. Boring enemies. Way too much pointless walking. The much vaunted crafting is incredibly simplistic, you can't experiment, just put together items you already had after you find the recipe book randomly in the world.

Honestly there's nothing special or worthwhile about it.

welp after so many years of playing this im actually going to make a review of this, its not going to be superb and mostly i suggest trying out the game for yourself to see if you like it but anyway, i remembered when this hit on the xbox 360 a long time ago and i really enjoyed it i had a blast playing it through to the very end and the style of this said game reminds me alot of diablo with the top down character angles along with the characters having sort of unique perks to grab but either than the stats you start out with all the characters are practically the same which by that point why not just allow us to create our own then?

along with the characters being somewhat bland they have no voice acting for any of them whatsoever which makes them pretty much more bland because at least diablo 1 and 2 of what this game tries to pull off here but at least the rest of the game has voice acting and some of the characters dialog its SO GOOD, especially Kovacs, his is pretty much my favorite besides the one in the El diablo islands dlc where you try to get the fireproof boots off of him i dunno who exactly voices him but he did a damn good job IMO, but the rest of the voices arent as good and some are flat out terrible not to mention but reading the text boxes and listening to the voice actor/actresses sometimes they go completely off script from what the text boxes show.

now for the gameplay, like i have said before it plays alot similar to diablo would play with sometimes fuck ton of enemies on screen but when you lvl up for perk points thats a bit different because mostly if not all just gives you the ability to craft certain stuff like potions along with some other tools but of course pending on what character you choose has some stuff a bit differently than the rest, like one chick named nina she can craft a flamthrower for an example while the rest of the characters cant or another as an ability to make incindairy handmade gun ammo as another example, one thing about the gameplay is its crafting system, its a pretty basic one but not bad just nothing to write home about and its easy to use also to craft everything you need weapons/armor/ect, but the biggest highlight but also IMO that shouldve been expanded upon is the weapons, the handmade guns in this game is 'the cream of the crop' if you love guns along with handmade D.I.Y. stuff this game has you covered, you can make to couple of handguns along with a machine gun and a rifle along with a couple of shotguns and bows and a crossbow along with a chainsaw (the meta weapon of this game when using melee) and this is also what im talking about, they couldve expanded on this section more because the handmade guns if were not counting the bows/crossbows and melee weapons so in total there are about 6 guns in the game you can craft but lets face it by the time you even get the machine gun or the rife the bows you have made are out of the window by that point, and the armor you can craft theres only like 4 if we`re talking about full on crafting while the chest pieces and headgear you get you`ll just end up adding on to over time with upgrades, so that i can say that also couldve been expanded but eh, also one last thing i forgot to mention about this are the redstones these stones are the most OP crafting item in the game with NO DOWNSIDES they can give your weapons a 50% dmg buff but technically the ONLY downside is once youve applied it to a weapons of your choice good luck getting that back along with so long not being able to uncombine your weapons because once its on it stays permanently, and dont worry about accidently using it on the wrong weapon because like i have said its EVERYWHERE, you can find these stones hidden away and some completely out in the open and if you chooses to partake in the monkeys side quests your going to end with with one of them handing it to you for collecting something basic they need that you more than likely picked up for crafted without even thinking about it, by the time you make it to end game all your weapons are going to have this stone applied reguardless, IMO they should cut down on most of these you can obtain because sometimes it makes the game WAY too easy especailly on the Zombie mini boss variants in this that im dubbing 'the tank' because you`ll know why after you see them :).

speaking of which thats another thing there are also zombie types but all of them arent even a threat besides 3, you got your casual walkers and shamblers and then you got runners along with some special ones like the tall zombies they dont do anything besides take a bit more hits that a normal one would along with that but you can chop off there heads or perform fatalities on them then you got the fat ones that explode if you get too close to them or if you damage one enough they`ll start to jog at you before blowing up these one are mostly like 80% of the time going to be your greatest threat because there everywhere and they arent usually alone either but you can see these guys coming a mile away before they get you in time especially during safe base raids, they like to spawn in bundles sometimes like 2 or 3 will be close to each other so they are easy to deal with, unless theres a horde and the game auto locks on whats infront of your sight thats when it gets a bit difficult to handle, then you got the zombie mini bosses which they rarely ever come into play and the dont spawn normal like the rest, these ones are scripted spawns in the story once you progress so far and they usually not that bad to deal with, all you can do to take one down is by just focusing for headshots the entire time and keep your distance and you`ve already won, because all there attacks mostly are melee anyway and it has only 2 attacks that are ranged, which it can through copses at you or charge which since meleeing it isnt an option be prepared to hide behind terrain and rocks often then you got zombie animals which arent that big of a deal but one particular one that i do need to mention because pending where you are along with where it spawn this thing can easily kill you but luckily it doesnt spawn often so, which is the zombie deer, these guys do nothing but ram you the entire time and hardly stop to give you a break, just like the tank you gotta keep you distance because melee weapons are useless and they WILL stunlock you to the ground if you try to confront them with melee, automatic weapons like the machine/sten/shotguns are good against these fuckers and also another hint of warning when these guys show up they arent alone either so be in a wide open area when facing these if you can help it, then you got zombie ostriches/komdo dragons them both are pretty much the same except the komodo dragons are a tougher variant and can be only seen in the dlc islands only these onse are just like the runner zombies but take a bit more hits and the run quicker than a normal zombie would and the go down easier than the normies so not that much danger besides being there a bit much of them and thats pretty much it.

i would explain the story but this is already getting long as it is and im tired of typing this so and since the game pretty much explains itself and people have already done this but i`ll end this with this note if your a fan of zombies, diablo, and like some d.i.y. shit this games for you and id highly recommend picking this up when you get the chance its a good game with a unique style to it.

Enjoyable. Don't expect much of a story. Beat it in about a dozen hours. There is an optional campaign--which is the volcanic islands--so you could beat it in fewer. Going for full achievements seems like quite the time sink.

Was an alright 10 hoursish game, worth a play if u enjoy some humor and survival crafting. I'd only buy it on special though not worth the full price. I mean i enjoyed it overall.

Didn't think I would be invested in this game but now am on my way to completing it. Had fun with co-op but mostly wing it alone. IMO, the story is not bad at all. I prefer this over HS2. My fave weapon is the upgraded bone boomerang.

PROS: Easy to find food/water/coffee, satisfying fighting mechanics, crafting
CONS: Only 2 co-op, limited inventory after expansion

How TO Survive:

This How TO Survive Guide is Fantastic.
Please let me explain why.

I now have all the knowledge needed to survive!
While I still need to study quite a bit more.
I can safely say that I now know just How to survive many
scary and death defying situations!

Mr. Kovac is a FANTASTIC teacher I trust him because he knows
what he is talking about! He wrote the How TO Survive guide so NO one
else knows more than he does.

He even wrote a Part 2! Isn't that enough to prove that he is FANTASTIC?

Gotta study more since the final examination is on the way!

If you're a fan of survival horror, action (hack n slash), role playing, and(or) crafting games, then you'll enjoy HTS. Plenty of missions to do, things to craft, and zombies to kill. You have a choice of different characters to play as and difficulty levels to add to the replay value. The game is worth the regular price IMO but when it's on sale, it's an absolute steal.

How to Survive is an interesting game of survival, crafting and zombies. While it's not particularly outstanding at anything, it's still solid in many areas and, overall, it is quite fun and entertaining (has a length of about 8-12 hours).

I recommend it at a discounted price (it's often on sale).

Great story driven survival experience with optional co-op. Tons of things to craft, plenty of missions to run, a bunch of stuff to collect, and zombies to put down! Fun to play with a buddy and goes on sale super cheap so definitely recommend!

How to Survive is a great top-down zombie survival game.

The game offers a good variety of different skills and equipment with a solid crafting system. Like many other survival games you have to monitor your hunger, thirst and rest. There are a lot of different options to achieve that, like hunting for food, collecting water in bottles etc. The combat is also super enjoyable, especially in co-op.

I don’t like the fixed save locations and some quests need a lot of backtracking. It gets a little bit annoying at times.

I didn't quite like this one aside from the survival craft aspect. I found I got caught up with targeting issues due to the camera system. Perhaps they addressed that since I last tried it.

I bought How to Survive two or three years ago for just a dollar or two during a sale. At the time I didn't have much disk space available and so never installed it until about a week ago. Since then I've played about 5 hours, and I'm feeling that's all I'll be playing. The story has been pretty lackluster so far, the game play feels rather repetitive and boring at best. The limited inventory and poor options for managing it have probably sucked up more of my time than the rest of the game. I haven't felt anything really compelling about the game. I found myself comparing it to Neo Scavenger a few times. Neo Scavenger has far more limited graphics, and turn-based combat and movement instead of How to Survive's real-time gameplay, but I feel like Neo Scavenger would actually be a more enjoyable use of my time, maybe in large part because it has a more intuitive interface, and somehow is just easier to play. The crafting and loot system in How to Survive really just doesn't feel right; in Neo Scavenger you can group items together in various bags to easily move things around. Maybe that will become possible in How to Survive, but just 5 hours in I had to leave so many good items behind that I think I just got tired of it.

How to Survive doesn't really feel like it's worth my time--not even the time to say much in this review.
Maybe if I'm really bored someday I'll come back to it.

Hacknslash and RPG elements are well combined, sarcastic humour everywhere.Despite most of the internet saying the game is terrible, I just beat the game and quite enjoyed myself doing so, and afterwards I played the challenge mode with my friend and had even more fun. I'm considering doing a second playthrough even.

Good little game. I had fun just smashing through it. Sometimes it felt clunky but whatever.. It was fun and for $4 aud, you can't really go wrong for what you get out of this game.

This was an OK game. Average zombie survival story with thirst and hunger that got in the way a lot. The night time was a joke. just sit in camp 5 mins for the sun to come up no way of speeding this up. The aiming on the game could have been made much better. 60/100

It is a good game 8/10

The gameplay is simple and enjoyable, the fighting mechanism it's easy to learn but I recommend using mouse and keyboard instead of joystick.
The crafting system needs a little more improvement.
The main story is short, I don't know about the DLC.
Overall it's a fun game to play for 10-20 hours playtime.

The music on any of the screens is the same song over and over and its a boring song. The ambient Noise though is great. Just turn off the music and go from there. Game starts out good, but once you make a machine gun, just use one red jewel on it and dont bother with anything else. Game is the same thing non stop till the end with extra stuff like food and water gauges thrown in. Dont bother with the game unless its super cheap.

Verdict: Boring Rinse repeat gameplay, annoying music thats just 5 sec loop on repeat. Good voice acting and thats about it. and yes I beat it

Hack-n-slash action RPG meets zombie survival game. The game is quite dated today but still an enjoyable experience as the main campaign doesn't take too long. Co-op is mandatory to make this fun but only if your partner doesn't take the game too seriously and can laugh at all the horrible writing, good luck finding one as good as mine though.

Finally finished this with a friend almost 4 years after I first played it.

On the plus side, the story is actually reasonably engaging and the quests are not too repetitive. It's a fun 'smash zombies' kind of game, and the crafting makes it a lot more interesting. However, I would have liked to see a more varied skill tree between characters, more combat mechanics and different boss styles.

Challenge mode adds an extra dimension to the game but wasn't interesting enough for me to try more than one.

What a dogshit of a game, got so far into it and there is a glitch.

Dont give the monkey the jerry can early on, because your then fucked for making the Blower to clear the gas.

It's not a bad game, but that's not enough for a recommendation. The combat is too simple to be interesting, the crafting is okay but not enough to make the game interesting either, and the humor wasn't really my type.

It's a nice survival game with a modest leveling system. There isn't much to the story but is enjoyable for maybe one or two playthroughs. Replayability value exists to some extent but that may vary according to your experience.

This game works fine in Single Player and no achievement has glitch. But horrible in co-op because of too poor connection. Disconnection and crash is a normal matter if you want to enjoy with your friend(s). So, it will be a total painful experience. I can’t say about LAN though.

Except this too many zombies, actually too annoying. Those spawns in every few minutes of interval and elsewhere, no matter how many times you had cleared a place those will be re-spawn there after a short interval. You may run out of ammo and healing items.

This game suggests for Windows XP but I had played in Windows 10. So I can't say how it will over all give performance in Windows XP or any prior versions of Windows 10 OS. So, think twice before you get this game.

So, what they don't tell you is how unrealistic the game is. You fight[spoiler] four-legged jumping spider crabs on the beach, giant hulking bosses with half-skeleton-exposed bodies who throw corpses of nearby-[/spoiler]zombies[spoiler]-you-killed at you[/spoiler], and can craft[spoiler] Bone Boomerangs that always return to you no matter what, as [/spoiler]no-ammo projectile weapons.

You also have to help civilians who engage in questionable activities (both mentally and morally) and somehow are unarmed yet aren't attacked by zombies a few feet away from them at all. And they don't help you kill them.[spoiler]But at least the piranhas don't discriminate! There are also skeletal night zombies that are reminiscent of Boneys from the zombie rom-com Warm Bodies.[/spoiler]

So yeah. It's a whole load of fun if you can leave your brain at the door. Otherwise, try something like Dying Light, which, uh, has you... scurrying up power poles as literally fast as a squirrel... lol.

Great game...simply a lot of fun. If you ever played NEVERWINTER NIGHTS or other iso-view games you will really like this game. If you ever played KINGDOMS OF AMALUR and fell in love with the flying Chakrams, you will LOVE this game. Just remember, Three Bone Knifes combined into one weapon of pure happiness!

nice little indie survival game. it starts as melee hack and slash but when you craft powerful ranged weapons it becomes a twin stick shooter instead. i finished the game in hard mode and survival elements (finding food or water) weren't really pushing you to play more carefully. only the final fight of the game made me feel a little bit challenged. one annoying thing is you can't see some some small important items on the map and there is not a button that shows you if they are there. you have to step on them to be able to see them so sometimes you can miss some important crafting items. overall a nice and fun game tho

This is one of those games that it makes no difference how many enemy you kill they just keep magically reproducing. It gets really boring. You clear one area then walk back through it and its magically full of enemies again.
