Unlike the sequel, you have more variety of masks to choose which can determine the way you play the game.. While the story is really simple, this game offer a cinematic, with a surreal aesthetic on the storyteliing. One thing i also realized, is that the AI is more harder than the sequel, once they got a sight of you, the enemy could instantly kill you. The map design is also way more simple than any map from the sequel.
While some of the aspect of this game might be better than the sequel, i dont think its a better game overall. Both game are a masterpiece, and i think everyone should play it

The story is utter nonsense and not required at all, I don't know what happens and I don't care because all I wanted to do was hit people. You can pickup guns and use bats and knives but the moment you get a mask to let you kill everyone in a single punch you'll never use a gun again. The music is fine, gets on your nerves a little by the end, but also serves as fuel for your violent massacres. The main game is the perfect length to keep you going before you get bored. Overall, a very solid product.

Лично я никогда не играл в игры с видом сверху. И вот тут я узнал про Хотлайн Майами. На самом деле знал я про нее и раньше, но довелось поиграть только сейчас. Долго думал стоит ли играть в необычную для меня игру... и вот решился. И никогда не пожалею.
В начале я вообще не понимал, что происходит по сюжету. Но когда я понял - я прочувствовал героя, мотивы и весь сюжет и могу сказать, что это один из лучших сюжетов на моем опыте.
Геймплей тут шикарен. Я не был любителем 2д игр до этого момента, Хотлайн Майами открыл для меня мир 2д игр. Большое количество оружия, его разнообразие, боевая система и еще бесконечное количество положительных качеств.
Отдельно хочу выделить музыку в игре... Оно великолепна. Еще очень долго слушал на репите саундтрек из этой шикарной игры. Она неимоверно кайфовая.
Вообщем, положительные качества я могу перечислять годами и веками, а вот минусов в этой игре я действительно не встретил. Даже не знаю было ли такое с другими играми...

The story can be best described as confusing, some events happen out of sequence, some get very surreal and trippy, other elements just make zero sense, and the game is proud of that and pushes the limit of what you think is actually happening, and just where are those phone calls originating?
The music is one of the strongest parts of the game, it can go from high energy electronic, or deeper and moody, loud and fun, there's a good song for every level, and in between cutscenes.
The gameplay is very hardcore, one hit is usually enough to kill you, and you actually have to use a lot of strategy and pre planning to tackle a level, sometimes going out of your comfort zone with different weapons.
Finally, the overall aesthetic of the game is beautiful, for any of us older gen z who grew up with hand me downs or anyone who experienced the late 80s and 90s first hand, the theme of the game will be very familiar, such as how people dress or the VHS store you sometimes go to after a mission, lots of nostalgia value.
This is a 10/10 game, everything is perfect, it subverts your expectations, and takes great pride in its quirkiness

“Graphics, animation and presentation (7/10)”: The game´s graphics are pixel art, it has an aerial view so the character sprites are very simple in design. What stands out the most about the visuals is the extreme gore & blood and the vivid 80´s neon color palette, it has trippy acid looking backgrounds and very decorated levels with tons of little details and even some secrets. One bad thing is that if you play this game for way too long you may have a headache, please play it with the lights on and take breaks once in a while.
“Music & Sound Design (10/10)”: The soundtrack is awesome, its full of techno, synth and electronic music; its very energetic and goes well with the gameplay. The sound design is great, landing melee hits, shooting guns and breaking heads have very crunchy and strong noises, it makes every kill very satisfying.
“Gameplay (8/10)”: A very fast paced top-down shooter with several weapons to kill dozens of mobsters who can kill you with a single hit, in this game you die quickly and respawn instantly. You can take on enemies with different strategies, melee-ing them, throwing them knives, shooting them down, or simply beating them with bare hands. Your main character can swap masks at the beginning of a stage, giving you different powers/effects to suit your playstyle.
“Level Design (7/10)”: The levels can have several segments, all of them indoors, the levels have good variety in design and enemy combinations.
“Difficulty Curve (8/10)”: It´s consistently hard but fair throughout the levels, the only sudden difficulty spikes are the boss fights, which are a bit wanky and you´ll never get them on your first try without knowing their weakness/strategy.
“Price and length (a bit cheap and kind of short)”: It has the standard price for indie games, and on sales its usually around 80% OFF, so its very light on your wallet. For that cheap price you get around 4 hours on your first playthrough, personally it took me 8 hours to 100% this game, so you get enough play time for your money, not to mention that it has lots of replay value if you want to get higher scores or try to understand the story.
“Overall thoughts and score”: It´s a game that shows lots of effort and talent, a great experience for anyone who likes violent, fast paced games you´ll enjoy this one for sure. I give this game a solid 8 out of 10, it’s a great game people should experience at least once.

explores various themes such as aggression, depression, regret, politics and loneliness. This game has an amazing soundtrack that you should look up on spotify or youtube if you want
to re-live an emotion or experience you may have had during your playthrough. The music complements the emotion of each scene or level in the game, reaching many levels of intensity.
Loud 90s disco and electronic music to go with the violence and aggressive mass murder scenes that you create within each level, and then mellow synth and other slow, sometimes sad
or depressing, music to go with the aftermath as the protagonist comes to realise what he has done, in the first level (the tutorial) you kill a homeless man for no reason other than rage
or just for the sake of it, your character who we know as 'Jacket' then walks away and throws up after seeing what he has done, as if it wasn't even him who painted the alley walls with the brains
of the vagrant. I say write this review with no intention of spoiling the game, however I wish to talk about the process that is the worlds development within the game. Hotline Miami, for the most part,
focuses on the main character leaving his apartment to go on his mass murders, although if you pay attention to detail you can see newspapers that talk about these crimes from an outsiders perspective which
in turn creates a parralel game where the player is no longer seeing through Jacket's eyes, also the state of the apartment declines as the state of Jacket's health and mental state declines.
If you, the reader, wish to learn more about the story of this game, then I suggest watching a breakdown on the internet, although they're lengthy they are worth the watch if you wish to
truly appreciate this game's design and world.

I have so many memories of playing this game in school with friends. I love the music and the story is really good - especially with the stuff from Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Give it a try, or a few.. you'll be doing that quite a bit.

Let me start out by saying I played this game at launch, but never finished the last couple of chapters. So I played most of the game twice now.
Gameplay is straight forward. You get to a new building which has multiple floors. You kill everyone on a floor, and move on to the next. If you die, you restart the floor. There’s a variety of weapons, both melee and ranged, and everything is basically a 1 hit 1 kill, including you. This means you can either go the guns blazing route, meaning you have to be quick and make sure you hit everyone before they hit you. Or you can go the more careful way of taking out enemies 1 by 1. I myself tried to combine these depending on the floor layout and enemy paths. There’s also unlockable masks you can put on that give you various slight advantages like being able to take 1 bullet before dying, walking faster, or being able to kill enemies by slamming doors into them. Enemies walk certain paths, and as soon as they hear or see you, they just run towards your position trying to kill you. So in the end quite straight forward and challenging at times, but nothing special. Some chapters are cleared faster than others due to difficulty, but they’re all perfectly doable and for me never got to the point that I actually got annoyed because I would always get at least a bit further then last time.
The story is really vague and not explained well. I read that if you collect certain objects in the game the story is explained when you finish the game. Personally i did not do this, and if you don’t the story is never properly explained. Not that I cared, since the game's main charm is obviously the combat, music and colors.
Graphics are gorey pixel style with some flashy colors. Nothing special but it holds up after years and fits the overall theme really well. Guns and melee sound nice and satisfying and the levels are accompanied by different electronic beats, where some of them are amazing to listen to and pump your energy and others are average at best.
Everything comes and fits together well though. The chapters where the music is spot on really make the whole game feel different. Driven by the music and focus of making sure you’re not spotted you’re basically a murdering machine moving from room to room. This combined with the gorey pixelated graphics and flashy neon colors makes it a blast to play.
Overall I recommend Hotline Miami to basically everyone to at least try. Especially in sales the game get’s dirt cheap and you should just give it a try. It’s on the shorter side but that’s okay if you ask me. It’s finishable in a couple of hours and you can add some more hours to this if you want to unlock all masks, want to improve your combo scores etc.

The gameplay follows a simple concept but executes it incredibly well. It's fast, full of violence, unforgiving and most importantly rewarding. Nothing feels better than getting the perfect run after a few tries or simply seeing your score go up.
The soundtrack fits perfectly and immediately gets you into the right mood. All of the mentioned above is accompanied by an art style that matches all other aspects flawlessly. A bit gritty but also detailed, colorful and bright.

When I first saw this game a few years ago I didn't really give it much attention because it was a top down game, and I wanted something more realistic looking to play as I thought back then that graphics were everything in a game, boy was I wrong.
The story is amazing, I won't go into detail but its set in Miami (duh) in the year 1989 and of course its all retro-like. The characters and what they wear all fit into the timezone that the game is in and doesn't break immersion with any futuristic elements that weren't there at that time. This game even has multiple endings!
Don't even get me started on the soundtrack, OH MY GOD. This soundtrack is incredibly well put together and fits perfectly with each individual stage or cutscene. Each song has its own feel to it and is just such a vibe, I even open up the music player to just listen to a few songs because it gets me in such a hyped mood.
In conclusion, and trust me I know this review wasn't the best written one, give this game a shot I guarantee that you will love each second of it.

I can't believe I've completed this pure masterpiece only now. Retrowave, pixel art, gore, late 80s aesthetic - if you enjoy such kind of things, Hotline Miami will deliver an unforgettable experience. Fast-paced reaction demanding top-down action with fascinating and beautiful in its own weird way story, which you can accomplish in one evening. It's earning a place in my all-time favorite games list faster than anything else yet.

Let's start with the graphics, which is amazing. It's like from the 80's and the whole game sets in that time. I really like how the game look like, however sometimes when I shot and the floor is bright, I cannot see my bullets or the enemies' bullets, but this is just nitpicking.
Sound and music is top notch. As I said, the game set in the 80's, music is set in that time too. The soundtrack is legendary in this game. Also the sounds effect works all right, not annoying to listen to for long term.
Controlls another good topic for this game. It's simple. You use your mouse, WASD, Space and Shift. That's it. You aiming with the mouse, also you shoot or throw with it. Keyboard is for movement / camera. Easy to learn these controls.
Gameplay and story is where this game shines the most. Gameplay is a 2D topdown shooter, where you need to be careful, clearing the place, because you take one or two shots and you are dead. If you take it too careful, you won't be able to get better points, which result poor grades and you won't get new weapons later. Because of this you have to find a rhythmic playstyle and have to learn to be quick and punctual to clear places. All of the previous reasons I told you, I have to warn you guys... this game is hard, and because of this not everyone's favourite game this.
Also there are lot of different weapons and enemy types. However not just the enemy is different, but also you. Before every Chapter, you can choose a mask, and every mask has different abilites, which can help you. Finishing chapters gives you new masks, but also there are secret masks to find. This add to the replaybility.
I like challanging gameplay, and I made lot of mistakes when I played it, but I had to learn my mistakes and retry it. Had to learn how the mechanics works in this game, and in the end, it made me an all right player. You have to go into it, die and retry for lot of time, but this is the route of success. I enjoyed this in the game.
About the story, I will be honest... it's bit confusing. Probably it because I didn't find everything, but I have some theories what this game is about. I don't want to spoil anything, but I liked how they start with the story and how it turn it inside-out.
This game is awesome. I played through in 5 hours, but I retried a lot to get maximum points. Also replaying with different strategies and finding the best method it's like doing science. There are few thing which I could nitpicking about, but I really enjoyed the whole game. It's hard, it's annoying sometimes, but atleast it's stylish and thrilling. For 8.5€, this game is really fun for it's price!

Playing Hotline Miami in 2020 for the first time is a somewhat peculiar experience. Having now played so many games which were so obviously inspired by Hotline Miami, such as Serial Cleaner and Devolver Digital’s own RUINER, I think contributed to my overall lesser sense of enjoyment with this one. It’s probably weird to hear me say that I’m not crazy about Hotline Miami considering it has 97% approval rating on Steam. And upon reading the reviews I get a sense that many people just adore this game, but even though I recommend this one, I don’t think it’s amazing. I’m surprised the approval rating isn’t closer to the high 80’s, but I suppose to get a ridiculously high approval rating on steam you don’t need everyone to love, you just need to be good enough for everyone to like you.
Hotline Miami’s story is a lot like a Tarantino film, with lots of gore, intensity, and mob action, but also a lot like The Big Lebowski in that sense that you don’t know what it’s all about or really where it’s going, and you may even feel like at the end there really was no point or direction. The basic gist is that the protagonist, somebody fans have named Jacket, receives a phone call from someone who threatens his life, unless he carries out some seriously violent work. To keep his safety, Jacket does as he’s told and as the game carries on, he seems to lose his sanity bit by bit. Violence spreads into Jacket’s life in a more personal way and things crumble apart.
It’s fine, and because there are some psychedelic elements to it, there is a contribution to the overall aesthetic of the game. I’ve said it before in my RUINER review, but I don’t think a game like this necessarily needs a story, so I’m glad it has one, but it’s not spectacular. Overall, the story is kinda fun and cool, but doesn’t play a huge role I think and is a bit hard to piece together on first playthrough. There’s a bonus chapter too from another character’s perspective which is a nice touch, and that character actually plays differently, which I’ll touch on briefly as I discuss the gameplay.
The core gameplay loop is really nice. It has a wonderful mix of high-speed action and limited downtime. Essentially, every day you receive a phone call sending you out on ”business”, you go and do the job, and then you stop at some joint for a movie/pizza/drink. The atmosphere during the before and after parts of the missions is ice-cold chill, supported by how little there is to do and the relaxed music. You can spend indefinite time here just chillin’ if you wanted, even though there’s nothing to do. The other breaks are less unlimited, because they come in the middle of the action during missions, which are filled with loud noises, tons of enemies, and higher tempo tracks.
Slaying the enemies can go several ways. You can try to plan out the whole floor by using the extended camera to see the enemies on all sides and then try and execute, almost like a puzzle. You can just rush in and try to improvise, reacting to the situations which present themselves to you. Or, you can do a kind of hybrid, which is improvisation and then planning based on previous failure. In truth, none of these plans really work that great, and this is the main frustration in Hotline Miami. Planning doesn’t get you far because the enemies don’t always respond in the same ways. I don’t know what it is about the AI in this game, but it’s very frustrating when 8 times in a row you’ve seen them respond one way, and then in the 9th they perform differently. It adds a great deal of frustration. Improvisation and reaction doesn’t work because there will always be enemies you cannot see from the safe rooms at the beginnings of the floors (and glass, which they can see and shoot through), and they can shoot and kill you from off-screen.
These small frustrations are exacerbated by a control system which I found less than sufficient. You have a weapon pickup button, but if you’re standing over a pile of weapons, you cannot guarantee you get the one you want. So, you may be in a dire situation where u desperately need one of the two shotguns sitting beneath your feet, but instead you pull the trigger after picking up a baseball bat and of course nothing gets fired.
The good news is that the action itself is frantic, fun, colorful, and even dying sometimes is fun/funny. The other really positive aspect of the combat is the mask system. As the game carries on you will unlock more masks that Jacket can wear. Each mask is like an Artifact in Risk of Rain 2, a way to modify the gameplay experience. One of them lets doors kill enemies, another makes your gun shots quieter, etc.. This was a wonderful decision and especially comes into play when you look at the high-scores and want to go back to levels to beat your friends.
Visuals are fine, but there are times when an enemy was still alive right under my nose and I didn’t notice them. I don’t know if this is my fault or the game’s for not having characters being more distinct. Music is bangin’. I think Hotline Miami gets a ton of praise for its soundtrack, which I don’t understand totally but there are definitely a few ear worms in the OST here, particularly the more relaxed tracks like Horse Steppin and Deep Cover.
The ultimate reason I don’t love Hotline Miami is because I’m fortunate enough to have played games which clearly took great aspects from it and improved upon them in many ways. I think that really speaks to Hotline Miami’s amazing influence and legacy as a game, but that doesn’t always mean the game will be an awesome play experience forever. Some games have incredible legacies but aren’t great to play down the road, see Goldeneye. That being said, it’s not bad either. It’s hectic, fun, and has a killer aesthetic which it seems like most other players really enjoy. If my review isn’t convincing, I think 98% of the rest of the playerbase will be happy to speak more positively about it, too.

Where pixels are as bright as the rainbow's flashlight falling down on water...
Exhausted and frustrated, i had left my tremendous journey through the epoch of Neon streets of a city, where sun shines from dusk till the very dawn, a city named Miami! Why did I even feel such a spectre of emotions due only the video game, which I had once bought on a Steam's market sales week and, being snowed down with my studies, put it away on the shell of games that are supposed to be played never.
Paradise for a real psycho!
That was the first idea which spranged to my mind after fifteen minutes of my playing passed. Shocked, but continuing to struggle in order to get the second chapter, I was also spectating in astonishment of how storyline goes. Non trivial and gripping plot is told with the great mysteria upon it. Narrator is actually absend, but instead of him there are a short cut-scenes between characters and mini dialogues, which are just a brief descriptions to the recent chapters.
Music must go on
In addition, I would like to mention that musical visualisation plays significant role and keeps you in a right way in terms of mood. Otherwise if the game would not have contained any of those energetic melodies, then, it would be impossible to illustrate a scenes of how main characters' mental disorder ruins Miami's recreation obedience.
All in all
Once you start this bloody creation of Heaven on your PC - you will be definitely hooked on a specific atmosphere of its own, absolutely unique universal, where your phone rings twice a week and strangers repeatedly ask you for something. Even though you are not a fan of 2D shooters, then, whatever, but try it, even just for a giggle!
