POSITIVES

I love it, only thing i miss in Deserts of Kharak, and Homeworld in general, is that you can't zoom into a unit and get cockpit view, like we could in good old Cataclysm. How cool wouldn't that be ?? Imagine seeing the cockpit view of a skimmer raiding through the desert, hunting harvesters and scouting for example. Would be cool.
Well, anyway, if you like RTS, this game is well worth investing in. Also the DLC's is a must, it don't cost much, and is worth it :) Great game!

1) The vast desert landscapes. It reminds a bit of Dune, whilst having its own unique story.
2) The capital ships also known as carriers. The design of these is amazing. These carriers allow for the production of units and tech upgrades which in itself is pretty cool for a mobile unit. Where it shines though is that the carrier can also be used to launch missile strikes and a vast array of different aircraft to attack enemy positions. What is truly the best aspect of all though is that you can reroute the power of the carrier to boost various different utility, defensive and / or offensive abilities of the carrier as the situation requires. More RTS games should have something like this where possible.

I love the art style and the music, the overall tone seems appropriate.
The gameplay is super boring. Shallow, repetitive, tedious. The UI and the controls are mostly ok, but could be a lot smoother. No mini map, unit response is sluggish in all cases.
I'm not even an hour in, and I feel like this game is such a chore. I can't recommend it.

Gameplay. I think simple enough to figure out. Units tend to have a semblance of a paper/scissors/rock style strengths and weaknesses to them. You'll want to be cost-effective in your engagements. Differences between factions is minor. Some a little faster, some a little more durable. May be repetitive after some time - I couldn't say how much replay value is here.
Campaign could have been longer. Shame there were no campaign DLC.
A fine addition to the Homeworld franchise which I fear has mostly gone under the radar.

The Good: The story line in Deserts of Kharak follows the same line as the original Homeworld series and, as usual, is fantastic. The graphics are top notch and not overly demanding (even on an older gaming rig like mine). Game play was smooth and there were no notable game play glitches.
The Bad: It’s hard to find anything really that negative to say about Deserts of Kharak. However, there were a few minor visual glitches of note but nothing that affected game play at all (e.g. the support carrier’s weapons occasionally didn’t fire in the direction of the enemy it was engaging...maybe the gunner just got confused?).
Another thing to be aware of is the training missions only cover the bare bones. Some of the unit’s abilities are not highlighted in training or through guidance in the game play missions.
My Take: I like to strategize and plan my moves (after all, it is an RTS game). I initially found this very difficult because the engagements with enemy forces were often swift, intense and brutal. There was little time to plan or strategize and I found that I was just pumping out units to keep from being over whelmed and yanking my forces all over the board in response to the newest threat. I frequently took heavy loss early on (which was hard pill for me to swallow). A few chapters in it did get easier, so I have to attribute my initial difficulties to the game’s learning curve.
Despite Deserts of Kharak being a ground based RTS, the system the developers used for moving forces on the ground was very familiar and not much different from the system used in the original space based series. Thumbs up there!
All in all Deserts of Kharak is a truly solid game. If you are a fan of the original Homeworld series, or any other land based RTS for that matter, then you should definitely give it a try.

Impressions after forcing myself myself past the early stage: It's warmed up and is playable. It's not a great time but I like homeworld and the story so I can push through. The unit AIs are frustratingly bad to the point where they're suicidal. The real homeworld games had a surprisingly good AI, it tried to stay alive, it prioritised tagets very well etc. In this game, your railguns will sit there and prioritise shooting enemies they can't hit while hostile railguns are decimating your entire army untill you manually tell them to attack the enemy. They will sit idle behind hills while friendlies are being engaged literally next to them until you tell them to engage. It's playable but frustrating and I find myself asking every mission Who designed this? How could it possibly be this poorly thought out?
Impressions late game: It's becoming blatanly obvious that the designer's answer to the question of how to make it a challenge is AI cheating. I've now noticed The AI can produce and pump out units withotu actually needing resources. You can't starve them out, you simply have to kill them, there is no strategy other than how to fetch some stuff for yourself so you can outproduce the AI that's got infinite stuff. In missions where you have a friendly AI they're useless. Rather than making a competent friend and enemy AI they've just put everything on the player. My friendly AI in a mission literally sent 4 tanks on occasion to attack the enemy's 50 odd units and 2 carriers with air support. I was expected do do everything. What's the point of even having allies here?
The game is frustrating, it is nothing like a homeworld game. I did play through the whole thing but this was mainly out of a feeling of wanting to play the whole series. The majority of the experience was frustrating and unenjoyable.

Deploy your units along a ridge? Ok. You have to do it one at a time. There's no Total War-style method of dragging out a place for a group of units. You can constantly direct a group until they swivel and point roughly where you want them to - but some will sit behind a ridge and can't fire. (Literally, they cannot fire. They don't move to fire while holding formation - they just... sit there.)
Deploy turrets! But you can't just deploy on the lip of a ridge - you need to zoom in and be sure you've clicked the area just over the ridge. If it's on the wrong side it won't fire. But you can't zoom in too far, which is shame because the vehicles look very nice.
Units deployed to higher ground get a combat bonus. Great! But there are so many sand dunes in such small areas it's tactically meaningless. Skirmishes flick back and forth very fast, rendering any advantage short-lived and non-detectable.
Resource types are split into two categories - yellow and blue. You need certain amounts of each for different vehicles and research. Why? For the love of all S'Jet why? Both resource types are harvested by the same collectors from the same areas! In one AI vs game a friendly AI sat a vehicle over the blue resource and my guys couldn't access it.
Unit special abilities don't have consistent hotkeys.
Watching little buggies flying over sand dune crests is awesome - but you're often zoomed out quite far so miss it. You can't zoom in super close either, like you can in HW, so you miss out on a lot of this detail - and we miss out on cool screenshots as well :/
F10 = Esc? F10 gets you your in-game menu. This is a carry-over from HW2 / HW Remastered and it makes no sense. None at all. Why break the convention?
Given the size of the main ship it should technically snap in two when cresting a dune at the crazy angles it can manager. Not a big issue tbf, just a bit weird.
Radio chatter is detailed and great. Music is very good. Visuals are good for 5 years ago. AI battles are fun to play. It's cool seeing dust trails :p
Overall, it's not a bad game - but it has too many wrinkles to make it good imo. Stick to the space-based HW games :D

The fact is, while the playerbase is small for multiplayer, it's still there!
The playerbase is close knit and most people add each other on steam so that they can invite each other whenever someone logs on, so once you get *in* a match, you'll be able to expect multiplayer games on a daily basis!
Fact is, the multiplayer tab doesn't show games in progress- hence, the game looks dead(er) than it already is.
The campaign may reel you in, but the multiplayer gameplay definitely lets you stay due to it's near-infinite replayability.

As for the gameplay, apart from excellent game mechanics I really enjoy the system where you get to carry over units and tech from the previous mission, it adds to the storyline and creates an atmosphere where you really need to be smart as the game gets if you throw away units.

THIS IS THE GAME THAT DUNE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE AND STILL WANTS TO BE,
Seriously if you have any love for science fiction RTS and the likes of Total Annihilation or Starcraft you'll shit yourself when you catch an eyeful of the detail in this thing. The rendering on every single unit - not to mention the desert landscapes - is beyond anything i've seen in this format. And running like a dream on my sad little i5 with Nvidia 1050. That's before you even get to the audio treatment. There's information in the credits on who BlackBird got to handle the soundtrack which is pretty good in and of itself, but the narrative treatments will blow your balls off. Even the operator acknowledgements are insane and ridiculously varied.
Real value for money. My only regret is that there's no Campaign DLC.

If you like strategy games, you'll like Deserts of Kharak.
Lots of games promise real strategy - this game will make you feel clever for using combined arms, using the right tool for the job, and using terrain. It's not a clickfest - despite being real time, the pace is sedate enough that you can recover from mistakes and come back from near disasters.
Plus, the single-player campaign is /excellent/ - maybe not in story terms, but in gameplay terms, I think it's better than the original Homeworld campaign.
Pick it up. Wish the devs had done more to enable mod support!

The two downsides i can think of are :
You have to slightly tinker in order to make 3440x1440 work. (change 2 values in the settings.json)
It is a little bit too short, more missions / campaigns would have been nice.
All in all score: Buy it, bröther.

...and I'm glad I got it, leaving the depths of space for a landscape Anakin would despise, we find ourselves in an earlier time before exploring space had been considered.
The storyline is great and engaging
The cutscenes give you all the feels of the original game
The ingame graphics are really nice to look at
Based on my Beer to time ratio, this is currently retailing at £30, so we're talking about 7 hours of game time needed to be worth the money.
I think I've played through this twice in the 20 hours I've clocked up, with a handful of skirmishes, so value for money achieved
A must for Homeworld fans

The game is robust and runs without issues. The sounds and graphics are amazing, even by current-time standards. And just watching the cut-scenes, with these impressive vehicles storming the desert and surfing the sand dunes, is worth the purchase price almost on its own.
The story is solid, characters engaging (I promise you will want to give everything you have to support Rachel and make sure she safely gets back to the Carrier each time). And they've hit a grand slam with voice acting and radio-communications, making you feel you are part of a realistic and very complex military operation!
Therefore I really don't get why this game hasn't become more popular and why the multiplayer rooms are almost empty, while so many people are still playing these other much weaker and very much outdated RTS games (!)
My advice on this is, don't be deterred by the lack of online players, and try to convince your friends to give it a try instead. Then square-off in a couple of skirmish games....and come back to thank me later! ;) Otherwise the single-player campaign alone totally justifies this purchase!
Sure, this game suffers from the same major flaw than almost all RTS games i.e. game balance, where the easy level is a tad too easy and the other levels are way too hard.
In this game it revolves mostly around resources gathering which are wayyy to scarce. I know it was made on purpose, and there too it is in theory a great success as it becomes center-stage to your strategy instead of just sending units to battle like a chicken with no head. But the unbalance inevitably happens when playing against AI's as they have no issues simultaneously managing all these defenseless scavengers while producing and directing battle vehicles at the same time. Whereas us, mere mortal humans, can't handle that level of multitasking all at once, sending us into a dead-end each time, where you run out of resources if you focus too much on battle, or get crushed on the battlefield if you focused too much on resources. :/
Thankfully there is an easy fix called:
Playing on the 'easy' level
! But still it would be formidable if the devs could add more resources and automate it's collection at least a little bit more.
My other comment is about the Carrier overheating wayyy too early. It is currently almost impossible to load all systems up to the top, leaving us only 'dreaming' of what it could be like if we could fully unleash these giant monster Carriers!!
Oooo...But wait until you start using this 'cruise missile' capability (!) I honestly come back to the game sometimes just for the sheer pleasure of launching a couple of these bad boys!!
And in case these devs actually do read our reviews, I am adding a little 'dream wish' here: PLEASE make a Base-building / Base-defense game. Remember how 'Dune 2000' was fun (for its time)? Now imagine how AWESOME it would be if your next game was about building and defending this Epsilon Base! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3fcYkm75bw
In the meantime, Homeworld: Desert of Kharak has to go down as one of the better RTS available on the market still. And it's for sure a 'must-play' to any fan of the genre.
It's now up to us to inject a new life into it and fill these multiplayer rooms four hours-on-end of EPIC modern battles in this gorgeous desertic landscape!!!

Feels like they succeeded where C&C4 failed with the mobile base idea. And they actually have resource gathering!
Although still early in my campaign, its already pretty interesting. Drawing on my past experience with RTS games, I gotta say its not too bad. Elevation and Terrain play a factor in combat, so positioning is key.

I wouldn't call it a complicated RTS, but it's a challenge on hard difficulty. Visually solid with good texture quality, environments (even though mostly sand), voice acting and great story telling. Was interesting to see how people went from driving, hovering on planet to space ships. If you are Homeworld fan, get it, you won't regret.
Only complaint, it doesn't run that well with large armies, was dipping occasionally into 15 FPS on higher than recommended specs. 80% of achievements are for multiplayer, so if you don't plan to play that you won't accomplish much in that regard.
Campaign mode is roughly 6-10 hours. But you can also do skirmish mode or multiplayer.

The game is relatively short, and because of the large scale, it pretty much feels like it plays in slow motion most of the time. Having not played any multiplayer, I have no idea the balance truly feels, but at least during the campaign, it felt to me that one was supposed to build the beefiest units possible and constantly repair them, because that way you were less likely to lose any material.
Art is very good, as customary for a Homeworld game. Both the graphics and music are very fitting and highly thematic.

You play as a commander of the Kapisi, a sand carrier belonging to the Coalition, a group of people living on a desert world of Kharak. You have found an ancient artifact that might be of great importance to your civilization, but it lies in the middle of a gigantic wasteland populated by religious fanatics that view the path of technology as sinful and would bring disaster to all of Kharak. Thus the battles that have to be fought until you reach your destination.
I won't go too deeply into spoilers here, but gameplay wise it plays pretty similar to the original Homeworld game, and veterans would be pleased to notice the familiarity. 3d viewscape, gorgeous graphics, tactical choices and terrain affects your chances of victory, and whatever you built/captured, you retain till next game. It's entirely possible to play your game with half your army being captured vehicles, but unfortunately you can't employ that tactic at an industrial scale like how Homeworld managed to make you do (ask your veteran player today, you'll know what i mean.)
Anyway, to close it off, i would heartily recommend this game, and to make the experience better, play this game, them start playing Homeworld and Homeworld 2. The story would make a lot more sense, believe me.

I bought this game due to it appearing to be like Wargame, in which it has similarities but not enough for me.
Also found that the plot was not interesting for someone who had no played before.

Gameplay adds some little innovations to the RTS genre. I specially liked the air units system in this game. The global command map of the original homeworlds works great for a ground based game.
For the rest, it's mainly an intrincated classic rock-paper-scissors logic for half of the units. The other half are big behemoths and support units. It works great ! And terrain gives a good dynamic to the intense fights.
Totally recommended. Then also play Homeworld Remastered !

Deserts of Kharak is a bizarre game that has an incredible amount of difficulty justifying its own existence. Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are two of the most finely-crafted, imaginative and innovated real-time strategy games of all time. They revolutionized the genre with three-dimensional mechanics and fleet persistence, and even today they are extremely impressive as some of the most mechanically complex and visually astounding games on the market. The original games also struck a chord with an entire generation of players, myself included, due to their poignant, brilliantly told narratives.
Meanwhile, where the original games were expansive and ambitious, the planet-bound action of Deserts of Kharak feels constricted and conservative. This is not a game inclined to take many risks, as series fans might be able to guess from its clear status as a prequel to the original game. That said, Deserts of Kharak is still a very engaging strategy game with a fairly unique structure built around scavenging and salvaging wreckage while fighting off competitors. The minimalist UI feels very similar to to the original games, and the storytelling matches the tone of the prior games almost-perfectly, even if the ground it treads ends up being disappointingly predictable. Deserts of Kharak is definitely worthy of your time if you're already a fan of the Homeworld series, if only to tide you over until Homeworld 3 (please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck) but I'm not convinced that it does enough to establish its own identity enough to be appealing to general audiences.

The units are carried forward from one mission to another, which means all your actions have significance throughout the campaign. The resources and unit cap are designed to limit the units you have in the early and mid-game. Towards the end game, however, you are slightly overpowered, anyway you still have to be very careful as every mistake or tactical incompetence will be punished. This makes for a tight and tense experience.
This game did not get the credit it deserves, it is an awesome RTS overall.

I have to say this is a great game for the Homeworld franchise, especially as a prequel to the original games. Absolute must buy.

The game is extremely satisfying as it lets you keep units and resources from the previous round continuously until the end.
The Story is quite well written and there is absolute room for further expansion into the Lore as a stepping stone has been set with the Homeworld Franchise as well as this Installment.
The only complaint i have (and this is a personal one really) is that i feel the Attack Fighter Aircraft you get quite early in game is way to OP, i literally obliterated anything with those squadrons and that the Gunship seemed to weak for getting it as the last Air Unit. Only good for soft targets... kind of a let down considering the endgame is mostly cruisers and armored stuff.
Regardless, a great game and a good 10 Hours Gameplay if you try to get the best out of every Level.

The scale is right, there are various viable build orders and strategies, air works in a sensible way and artillery can be devastating. There is good ballance between macro and micro, the latter being based on skills that makes sense and intuitial use of terrain, in line with believable armor tactics and not throurgh an artificial cover bonus system.
Singleplayer-wise, the story is great and missions are a lot of fun, great cutscenes too. Though some might dislike the slow start (because it works as a tutorial) and other the retcons of the Homeworld story (this game started as an isnpired spiritual prequel, while the license was acquired later, thus bending the story to some mechanics that were already developed), it still deliveres a compelling and replayable experience.
The only flaws that I can see in the game is the lack of long time support. The DLC is fun and well thought, but MP / Skirmish only, so no singleplayer content. Multiplayer also lacks maps in the longer run as well as more interesting modes. I don't think the devs were really focused on making this an RTS comeback, though personally I consider them having a product with all the potential that could just do that. No mod or mapmaking tools, kind of left the game in a frozen state, not enabling it to reach its full potential.
Trust me though, I played RTS since Dune and C&C and this is very much in the vein of those classics while also introducing the best aspects of Relics more grounded and realistic style.
For RTS fans this is a must-play. For Homeworld fans this probably isn't the prequel they were looking for, but at the same time, it surpases expectations of the initial title announcement and also refines the Homeworld mechanics to make it more in line with classic RTS, while also keeping the original feel, while introducing some of the best elements of the genre's evolution.
PS I you want to play against other people online, you'll need to join the Discord, but the community is really nice and welcoming.
