Do you enjoy hack-n-slash but longed for a bit more? Maybe you like tower defense games but find them a bit boring? Heldric is a unique mix of the same old styles of game with a few new twists. A hack-n-slash without endless level grinding. A tower defense game with more action. A game where you don't play as an epic hero, but as a humble shoemaker who must work together with his fellow villagers to defend their home.

Build and upgrade the village quickly before the attack waves start. Each building you place adds unique abilities to not only the player's character, but your fellow villagers as well. You must choose your structures wisely, as there are only a limited amount of plots to build. Each villager contributes to your coin income and provides essential help in defending the town.

You must help defend against waves of monsters intent on killing everyone. Do you have what it takes to survive?

Nicht ganz ausgereift, aber ein interessantes Spielkonzept, das für ein paar Stunden durchaus Spaß macht.

Auf das Spiel während seiner Greenlight-Phase aufmerksam geworden, habe ich die Gelegenheit genutzt, das Spiel durch eine Rabattaktion günstig zu erwerben. Aber selbst für den normalen Preis dürfte das Spiel durchaus einen Blick wert sein. Die Idee ist durchaus charmant und der Aufbau-, bzw. Strategie-Part recht kurzweilig, obgleich die vorgegebenen Bauplätze das Optimieren des eigenen Vorgehens mitunter spürbar einschränken.
Auch der an sich interessante Aspekt, dass die Bewohner der Stadt im Level aufsteigen, wenn sie Feinde besiegen, kommt leider zu kurz, da die Karten allesamt relativ schnell absolviert sind. Somit eignet sich das Spiel vor allem für den schnellen Spaß zwischendurch, wirklich viel Zeit am Stück wird man hier nicht investieren (müssen).

Graphisch merkt man dem Spiel die Indie-Entwicklung an, dennoch weiß die Spielwelt in Sachen Stimmung und Authentizität zu überzeugen. Gewünscht hätte ich mir mehr Umgebungsgeräusche wie Kommentare der Bewohner oder des Protagonisten. Auch der eine oder andere Tipp, wie man die verschiedenen Gegnertypen angeht, wäre hilfreich gewesen.
Wirklich gestört hat mich eigentlich nur der Blickwinkel, der durch seine Isometrie selbst bei oberster Zoom-Stufe suboptimal verharrt und ein frühzeitiges Aufspüren der Gegner verhindert. Eine alternative Ego-Perspektive wäre ebenfalls hilfreich gewesen.

Dennoch kann ich dieses Spiel ohne Bedenken empfehlen, denn in Sachen Preis-Leistungsverhältnis befindet sich die Legende des Schuhmachers nicht auf einer schlechteren Stufe als zahlreiche Big-Budget-Produktionen.

Heldric - The legend of the shoemaker is a game that has great potential. The king has left your kingdom and you step up to the role of a knight and defend your city. This is a different take on tower defenses, because you have a main character to take control of and wreck the enemy. Build up your city and defend it with your fellow villagers. Place defenses and buildings in between waves of attackers and upgrade those buildings to help you overcome the enemies. Not every level is the same and the enemies get progressively harder, making you have to change your strategy as you progress. I would recommend this game if you have extra cash and you like hack and slash/ tower defense games. You have both a sword as well as a bow/arrow in your arsenal, you will definitely need both to defeat the different types of enemies you face. The only negative comment I have for this are the controls for the main character in battle, it isn't as smooth as I'd want it to be, but it doesn't ruin the game. The more I play it, the more I enjoy it.

tl;dr Try it, I like it, you might too.

This is a great game with a more casual feel about it. Brilliant if you find yourself wanting to jump in and play for short periods at a time.

The game itself has a nice feel about it and looks great. One of the most amazing parts is that it was made by just one single dev. He has continued to update this game from release and many of the negative reviews reflect release bugs that have been corrected or removed now. Althought the game is not 100% perfect, the few bugs and flaws are not game-breaking and in some way add to the charm of this nice little game.

If you like tower defense games -- Give it a go.
If you like hack and slash games -- Give it a go.
If you are expecting something Diablo-esque -- Stop thinking that and give it a go!

7/10 - Great fun and the hours you can spend in this game make the pricetag well and truly worth it!

The game is great in concept but the issues it has make it suffer far to much. There is no real camera movement, making moving across the map to upgrade buildings a real pain. Bad or repetitive sound effects.
Repetitive enemies / maps
Not a lot of strategy needed for building / unit positioning, or much that can be done with units.
Combat is not that gripping.

Great concept, lot of potential, but needs a lot of work.

I know the developer said this was aimed at the casual gamer, but I think with more features it'd be a truly stand out game. Current issues as I see them are:

Quite a few bugs
Repetitive enemies / maps
Not a lot of strategy needed for building / unit posistioning
Lack of overall narrative

With a bit more polish I'd change my review to recommended in a heartbeat.

It's an interesting concept, but it needs a lot of work. Pathfinding is very problematic, units slide across the screen, no real camera movement (other than a slight zoom in out), and bad/missing sound effects.
