The game carries a good story and runs extremely well with a clear amount of dedication and passion put in. I played this game a lot on the Xbox and made sure to get it here to play it again and have a fun way to add a ton more achievements to my profile while having a game to play with friends.
I thoroughly recommend anyone looking for an RTS to play this and for any Halo fan to try it even if RTS isn't your genre of choice.

I think the game delivers. It's short and sweet. There is no ambition for multiplayer here, this game is developed primarily as a campaign, with only co-op multiplayer option.
If you look at the alternatives available to PC players in the strategy genre, certainly Halo Wars 2 came out as an average game, and not groundbreaking. The novelty that Halo Wars 1 brings to the table console-friendly controls, simplified base building, focus on action and single player.
The campaign as definitely worth it. Pretty good cinematics, good timing (other it should have been possible to skip introductory cinematics for each scenario), and quite engaging story.
Serina has to be the funniest AI ship-assistant character that I've ever seen in a long time.
Very performant engine, which did not give any issue whatsoever, even during big battles.
Really the downside is the very small amount of content, especially considering what PC players are used to. This game has simplified base-building and console-friendly controls. Here are some pretty good alternatives, if you like this and want to keep it going:
- Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 2: Even more simplified base and economy management, even more tactical and action-focused, lots of DLC, lots of factions, hundreds of hours of content, still possible to find people multiplayer if that is your thing.
- The Riftbreaker: Even more game controller-friendly. Really good and performant engine from 2021. Quite many similarities in the SCI-FI setting. Lots of explosions.

Pros:
-Simple, and easy to understand RTS.
-Awesome cinematics, especially for a game as old as it is.
-AI is challenging (could be a con too if you're not into that masochistic stuff.)
-Gameplay feels fluid, and with the Definitive Edition, the particles and graphics feel a lot nicer than I remember.
-Community is awesome!
Cons:
-The campaign's sense of direction feels a little wonky at times. Some Characters aren't really fleshed out.
-Finding a game on multiplayer is virtually impossible (not really the games fault though.)
-The Legendary/Automatic AI in Skirmish has absolutely NO CHILL whatsoever. Periodt.
Conclusion: Just get it! It's the best 20 bucks or less I've ever spent for good memories of younger days. Good luck out there!

Easy recommend for people who want to try out the water of the RTS genre before trying some of the heavy hitters. After this, may I recommend Dawn of War 1 or perhaps Dawn of War 2? They are essentially the upgraded version to this game, with a bit more depth.
Once you've mastered those, only then can you beat all the Pokemon trainers and jump into Starcraft.

I do recommend a controller for this RTS because the devs didn't really accommodate the game being on keyboard and mouse, they really need to rework that but I think that any more updates to this game is not going to happen.

Models, backgrounds and cinematics are trustworthy to the fps series and pretty good to the sight. Being a console game, of course, the level of rts gameplay is a little bit restricted in comparison of the classic pc games of the genre but its still very functional and fun.
There is not a big variety of units (a dozen for each faction), building strategy is basically inexistent, commands are basic and of course you can imagine there are only two playable faction (and only an USMC campaign).
The story is on the line of the main games (somebody could say is even better of some of them) and explores the pre-halo events which are only mentioned scarcely in the fps series. That’s a good point for me.
In conclusion is not the best rts you will ever play but it’s a good rts with its own platform limitation.

COOL:
+ The setting, characters and all feel true to the original series and lore. As a Halo fan I love that.
+ For a PC-port from consoles it's insanely well done. No janky menu's or controls and many RTS control-staples have been programmed in. (like double clicking to select all the units of the same type or grouping them by holding cntrl+a number)
+ The graphics and sound design is great. I love the sound effects, both old and new.
+ In addition, the voice acting is REALLY good. Nearly all units chat, react and have great lines overall which made me more empathetic towards my units. I love the UNSC marines and Covenant Grunts, all true to their original counterparts.
+ I like story modes in RTS's and even though this one starts rather slow it's gets really fun as it goes on. The missions are short but the story itself is great.
+ All campaign missions are rated with points like an arcade game, making replay value much higher and fun to compare scores and difficulties.
+ These come with a slew of achievements of which most are quite interesting. There is some grind, but most challenges are specific. This is what I'm used to from the Halo franchise and it's really nice to see in an RTS form.
+ Scarabs go BWOOOOOOOOOOOOO
NOT-SO-COOLS
- Might be the simplest RTS ever seen on PC. This is a remnant of it coming from consoles so it's not too bad but if you're really into the RTS genre this game will leave you in want.. Base development and unit upgrades are all very linear with little room to make your own strategies or the like.
- As expected, unit pathfinding (and AI in general) is terrible. I heard it used to be worse, but units all have these traits: Trying to path through buildings or other units. Units not getting out of the way. Groups of units blocking themselves. Units making way too wide turns. Being unable to make units form up. Chasing enemies way too far. Weak units aggro-ing powerful ones. The list goes on.
- There's only 2 factions (and only a UNSC campaign, with only 15 missions) which makes it even less varied. The UNSC feels more fleshed out then the Covenant, but that's not saying much.
- As far as I can tell, balance isn't very good. UNSC spamming Warthogs and Air-Strike's can win any game, unless you are somehow slow enough to let your enemy Covenant build Scarabs which have to be one of the most powerful RTS units I've seen in ANY game.
- Online is dead. If you want to play matches versus other players I suggest getting some friends that like the game.
So long story short: The amount of content is low but the quality is high. And that's it. Despite being very simple I had quite a lot of fun and I think I might do another playthrough just to do some of the challenges the game suggest to you. The story is short, disappointingly so, but I have still enjoyed most of it.
All in all If you're a huge Halo fan I recommend it but if you're a huge RTS buff then this might not be for you.
Thanks for reading and if you have any questions be sure to leave a comment!

Behold the game that killed Ensemble Studios the once-proud developers of the venerable Age of Empires Series. I kid, I kid. Well, maybe not completely. Anyway, Halo Wars is one of those unusual games that very few people seem to have played that nonetheless is very significant, as it was both one of the few genuinely good exclusives for the Xbox 2 (just because Microsoft uses stupid names for their consoles doesn't mean I have to), and also because it was a long-overdue, innovative take on the RTS genre that demonstrated ably that such games could, indeed, play well without the use of a mouse and keyboard.
Designed specifically for use with a gamepad, Halo Wars on very simple mechanics: you can establish bases to produce units (and resources and research) at predetermined locations, and have three different means of selecting units: one-at-a-time, all of the nearby units, or all of the units on the map. This can make dividing your forces into multiple groups rather cumbersome, but for the most part missions are designed along specific challenges that do not require much tactical thought--many can be cleared just be using all of your units and once and carefully directing them across the battlefield.
Story-wise Halo Wars is fairly unexceptional: the Covenant are collecting strange alien artifacts, and it's up to you and your team of burly space marines (plus a sexy AI) to defeat them. It's all very conventional fare and presented with a surprising amount of earnestness, not dissimilar to the mainline games. Your Covenant enemies may as well be cartoons, but the business of fighting them is serious indeed.
Lastly, before I nod off, I must point out that--as is the case with every Halo game, really--the soundtrack is superb. This is one of those games that's worth playing--and replaying--just to soak in the atmosphere. Let the sound flow through you. It's almost meditative.
Note: also played on Microsoft Xbox 2.

This is not competitive game or anything like that is just a very solid RTS with a great campaign.
If you really like halo or want to get into the halo games in a chronological order i recommend this game so much

Pros,
Graphics WOW, they are stunning considering the age.
The cutscenes in the campaign are some of the best looking and most action packed in the Halo series.
Awesome amount of units.
Well voiced and true to Halo lore.
Produced by Ensemble so you know you are getting the best.
Far better than the sequel.
The actual campaign is extremely fun to play and very difficult on Legendary, rewarding and brilliant.
An extremely well polished nod to the Halo community that went underappreciated on a huge level.
Great co-op play in both campaign, multiplayer and skirmish, something not many RTS's can say.
Easy controls and perfect for those new to RTS games.
Very funny voiced UNSC soldiers.
The best thing though for me is the heart that clearly went into this game.
For those that do not know, Halo Combat Evolved was meant to be what Halo Wars is today, so this is a true nod back in time and shouldn't get any hate. It knows what it is, it is an RTS built for console and there is nothing wrong with that if it is done as well as these guys have done it, you will get countless hours of fun out of this game.
Cons,
Strange balancing which can both be challenging and frustrating at times.
Some campaign levels are a little too brutal.
Low unit count even in the PC edition which is a very sad flaw.
Low amount of strategies for a game with so much depth.
Multiplayer achievements.
Aside the above this game is one of my favourite RTS games of all time, alongside AOE2 and HOMAM3.
A true dedication to the Halo series, even if you don't buy it just go watch a cutscene reel somewhere, those alone will make you shiver with how much care and attention went into it. Blur studios produced the cutscenes and they later went on to remaster Halo 2, so you know the level I am talking about if you know.
Ignore the hate, for the price now this game is worth every penny and more, marred by development hell and with Ensemble closing after this game released, it still came out as one of the best Halo games of all time, let alone RTS.
Give it a chance!
( Better than anything 343 can produce, let's put it that way! )

Overall the campaign is pretty good but for a halo game for me it was kind of lacking, the scenes are what made the campaign for me other than that I didn't enjoy it. However, with the addition of skulls, I did. Playing vs AI is always fun and such a blast, even now there are mods you can get online for custom games which makes it even more fun. pretty sure you can play as the flood too. Multiplayer however is where the game is at. one of the best strategy multiplayer games out there. each game is different well it was before hawk, warthog, and banshee rush.
overall I do recommend for a single-player experience of the campaign and battles vs AI, However, these alone you cant play forever without it getting stale. I love Halo wars but I don't recommend you buy the game in its current state as right now on steam and on the store, the game is pretty dead and is super hard to get into a game. multiplayer is the reason why so many love this game, myself included but since it's dead I sadly cant recommend it since you won't have the experience we had when it was active. R.i.p halo wars multiplayer was one of the best

>Good soundtrack.
>Good voice acting.
>Unique setting.
>Above average story.
>Each faction has their own unique gameplay elements in addition you
can the pick a commander ingame of your choosing pertaining to that
faction to further add unique elements to the faction you pick.
Cons:
>Very shallow strategic & tactical RTS aspects.
>Some unit pathfinding problems.
A must play for any Halo fan, however it suffers from very shallow strategic & tactical aspects.
Which is to be expected from an RTS game meant for the Xbox.
Overall I give it a 6.5/10

The music isn't like other Halo games, didn't get the Heroic-Interstellar-War-For-Survival feeling from it. For an RTS, they did pretty good. The only thing that annoys me is that the view is so damn small you can't see anything. From an RTS perspective, it's not groundbreaking, nothing you haven't already seen. However there are a few golden caveats. The Spartans that show up and have their own AI and path across the map and into vehicles is pretty fucking cool though. Also the vehicle mechanics are way better than the ones from say... Dawn of War, it's something else to see the Warthog jump from one section of the map to another. It's interesting to see Halo from the perspective of the military commanders and not the Spartans themselves, for sure.
However, I found myself getting stuck on one of the missions, and haven't had the need to play it since.
Not an addicting game so buyer beware, but I want to give it another shot in the future.

An unusual recipe, but it works.
-Overview-
2009's Halo Wars (HW) is an unusual game, in the sense that it's a real-time strategy (RTS) game developed specifically for console, and therefore gamepad. As a result, it's a relatively basic example of the genre, lacking some advanced features. For this reason, veteran RTS players may find it a bit simplistic, but those who can accept the game for what it is can find a smooth, polished and rewarding experience. The game's relatively simplistic approach may also appeal to those who are new to the genre, as it's easy to learn and play casually. That said, it does have some minor issues.
????????The game was designed for controller, though keyboard/mouse works fairly well.????????
-Gameplay-
In many ways, HW's gameplay is similar in complexity to that of Command & Conquer titles; there's no worrying about ammunition types, directional damage or anything of that nature. Winning a battle chiefly involves choosing the right types of units to counter those of your enemy, or having sheer numbers. Both playable factions are well-balanced, with a unit for every speciality, and a number of solid all-rounders comprising of many established Halo vehicles and personnel, plus several new ones.
Where HW differs from the aforementioned titles is in its base-building system; bases are constructed using a template on a predetermined site, removing much tactical decision-making from the process. Said decision-making lies instead in which buildings to make, what order to make them in, and what kind of defences should be used, though it makes little difference in the long run. While this system is restrictive, it encourages players to focus more on building and using units, which is the better part of the game.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2306547931
Unusually, HW features a full co-operative campaign in which players share a base, budget and population cap, working together to make better use of their units. This isn't something I've seen another RTS game do, and the result is pretty good, if you're playing with somebody you can work well with. With collectables, four difficulty settings and five skirmish game modes in which to play against A.I. or other players, HW offers plenty to do.
While HW does present a simple interface, it does still have many traditional RTS functions, such as unit special attacks and upgrade paths, the ability to garrison structures, and useful features such as grouped units automatically moving at the same speed.
Now, the bad parts: Firstly, units like to move, but they're bad at it. When approached by an enemy, units will always move to engage, potentially exposing themselves to something nasty, lurking just out of range. They're also very bad at getting past each other due to very large collision boxes, with traffic jams possible in narrow terrain.
Secondly, higher difficulty settings feel pretty unbalanced on some campaign levels. I don't remember it being so insane in the original Xbox 360 version, but regardless; increasing the difficulty in the campaign does not increase the intelligence of enemy A.I., but instead unbalances the units themselves, making theirs far more tanky and deadly, but retaining the relentless spam of reinforcements present in some missions. Given the nature of the game, this doesn't really make for a fun experience.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2306544472
World Design:
HW's campaign sees players fight on alien installations, grassy plains and on top of a moving starship, to name a few places. It's pretty cool. Skirmish maps are typically more open and plain, with the occasional structure, teleporter or environmental hazard to keep things interesting, though the focus remains more on straight-up battles than tactical use of map features.
-Story-
HW tells a solid story set in the early years of the Human-Covenant War. Some characters are, perhaps, a little bland, but none are bad, and the overarching plot ties well into the franchise's established lore. Many cool moments are had along the way, and it's an entertaining ride, overall. Collectables provide lore snippets, offering a little insight into Halo's lore.
-Technical-
This game was played with the following PC specs:
Intel i5-4440 3.10 GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4GB
1680x1050 resolution
Windows 10
Game installed on HDD
Performance:
Using the specs listed above, the game ran at a constant 60fps on max settings.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2306546598
Visuals:
As somebody who played HW on the Xbox 360 back in 2009, I can tell you it looked pretty damn good back then. Now? Well, it's still pretty good for an RTS. While the textures and shading are a bit dated, the level of detail in every small animation is impressive, and it really makes units feel alive.
What really impressed eleven years ago, however, was the cutscenes. Some have stuck with me all this time due to both the visual fidelity and the sheer epic-ness of them. Watching them today, they seem a bit rough, and a bit dull, as one would expect. The sense of scale and intensity of the action, however, remain.
The only thing that sours the visual experience is the in-mission cutscenes, which seem to play at a low, capped framerate. These are brief and far-between, however.
Audio:
HW's soundtrack is excellent; retaining the feel of Halo's epic music, while creating something unique to this game.
Many sound effects seem to be borrowed straight from other Halo titles, meaning they're of high quality and bring a subtle familiarity to the game when heard by fans of the franchise. Voice acting is solid as well, though units only have a single line of dialogue for each action (moving, etc.), so that can get a bit repetitive.
Issues:
In one instance, I was unable to pick up a collectable. I was able to get it on another attempt, and the issue has not occurred since.
-Summary-
HW overcomes its relatively simplistic nature by doing almost everything very well. It's a casual entry in the genre, but it looks good, it sounds good, it's easy to play, and it's fun to play.

A bit of a continuity error of Spartan Red Team's Mjolnir Mark IV power armor having Energy Shields so early in the Human Covenant War, but not a huge deal.

Also, bring halo wars 2 to steam now please, it's been nearly 4 years and I'm not paying £40+ for a complete edition of a 4 year old game on the windows store.

This is RTS simplified. It doesn't have the tense and exciting mircro/macro of StarCraft II or the endless modding fun of WarCraft III/Age of Mythology or whatever the hell golden winning formula Red Alert II and Age of Kings has which makes em unkillable.
But, hey. You like RTS? You like Halo? You like Co-oping with a friend! (I don't know why more RTS don't provide Co-op, I had a blast with Red Alert III Co-op).

As far as I've seen there haven't been any errors, glitches, or bugs from my current total of 8 or so hours.
However, this game's modding community, as far as I've seen, is very scarce, with only 1 or 2 pages of mods on moddb and even less mods on nexus mods. Though, in my opinion i personally don't mind if there are mods or not.

It appears to me to work quite well on win10, and the units are a nice change from the usual - grab it!

GAMEPLAY
Halo Wars: Definitive Edition has standard real-time strategy gameplay but simplified for console, which is Xbox. Start by building a base, gather resources from supply pad, get a power going, train units and go to war. It's simple yet so satisfying, infantry behave really good, auto firing on enemies even while on the move, air units also behave the same, so does vehicle units. Each unit has role, good against this unit but weak against that unit. Base building is also simplified, with a center core and building slot around it and 4 defense slot on each base corner. There are 2 main faction, the UNSC and the Covenant, each with their own unique gameplay style and technology. The campaign tells a story around the Covenant invasion of colony planet of Harvest, with the protagonist being a ship called Spirit of Fire and its crew.
GRAPHICS AND PERFORMANCE
Halo Wars: Definitive Edition has very decent if not good graphics. I never played the original from Xbox, but the definitive edition is beautiful. Everything has really good detail, from small soldiers to a big flying gunship, the world map, the buildings, everything is great. Unit animation is also great. Infantry animation is not stiff and vehicle has good effect like smoke or damaged state. All of this with no performance issues. No lags or stutters, animation plays smoothly, overall it's great.
CONCLUSION
I just recommend Halo Wars: Definitive Edition. The gameplay is good, the campaign has good story, the skirmish mode is fun, just a really good game for me.

1. You can control multiple Spartan-42 soldiers.
2. A triage of Spartan-42 can wreak havoc on an entire Covenant base.
3. Spartan-42 can't be KIA, they can always be revived.
4. Spartan-42 shield makes the same hum when it recharges.
5. There is a Halo timeline, which is quite a good way of introducing the rich lore to a layman.
The music is makes quite a mood when commanding your battalion to a seemingly impossible battle only to be backed by a couple of ODSTs, a few Spartan-42 and a freakin' vulture in the end.

The story is ok and cinematics look good for an RTS but don't expect Halo 2 levels of storytelling, and man oh man when the Halo theme kicked in after seeing some Spartans in action it's hard not to get pumped, all of the soundtrack just screams classic Halo and its amazing.
Just wish we got a campaign for the Covenant too, the UNSC is great but it would have added alot to the game to have seen both sides of the war just like in Halo 2, but you can play them in skirmish or multiplayer.
I like the gameplay alot, you get a base from which you recruit and upgrade your army, gather resources through building slots, it might seem kind of limiting at first but it does force you to capture more bases to get more resources or more army variety.
Battles can get intense, sadly I haven't played multiplayer since its almost impossible to find a game, but the A.I likes to spam cheap units alot which normally forces you into doing the same, and basically the one with the larger army wins, regardless of quality, but I do like the fact that if the enemy has vehicle or air superiority, your infantry still has upgrades that can counter this without having you go bankrupt recruiting vehicles or air support.
The sound effects are so on point with the Halo formula, just hearing some of the familiar sounds like the Spartan shield alarms or the Warthog engine triggers my nostalgia of playing the awesome Halo campaigns.
If you're a huge fan of the classic Halo artstyle like me, then this will certainly please you, all the units, vehicles, weapons and ships just scream Halo.
The controls however can be pretty frustrating sometimes for those used to RTS, but that's to be expected from a console port, unit pathfinding doesn't always respond well to what you tell them to do, especially heavy vehicles, I did like to see how your army all moves at the same speed as your slowest unit but having some sort of preset formations would sometimes save you some unnecessary losses.
It does have its rough edges, and the multiplayer is pretty much dead but skirmish can still be pretty fun if you don't mind playing the A.I or find someone to co op with, it's an overall good RTS game, with a good campaign and a good addition to the Halo franchise, for 10€ on sale there's alot of value here for RTS fans, especially for the Halo fanbase.

The building/station management isn't the strong side of this game as much as it was never in Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. So don't look into this on that game. It's more the great mission design, the real iconic Halo units and flair which make this good stuff.

Then there's the Definitive Edition which features uncompressed textures and enhanced special effects, bringing the game up to a more modern standard, the way it always should have been.
The game's weakness is in the multiplayer balance. Rush strategies, particularly with warthogs, are dominant and some units are deceptively weak even in their niches.
Overall though it's a great game for its campaign and player-vs-AI skirmishes, and a worthy edition to your Steam Library and to the Halo franchise.
