Dass die Source-Version die alte Grafik nutzt kann Ich es irgendwo noch verkraften, aber dass das Spiel so verbugt ist, hab ich nicht damit gerechnet. Da wollten die Spieletester wohl früher Feierabend haben oder Valve hat nicht mal es getestet ob es überhaupt normal läuft. Holt euch die Source Version nicht, holt euch lieber die Originale Version, da ist es noch spielbar oder noch besser, holt euch gleich Black Mesa.

Don't play this over Half-Life because it's ridden with bugs and glitches and graphically, the only difference between this game and the original is that this game has Source engine physics, lighting and water. If you went into this game expecting it to be a remake of Half-Life, it's not. It's more or less a port of Half-Life to Source. If you want to play a remake of Half-Life, then play Black Mesa instead.

Fix missing music/sound effects in Source Engine games (Valve games, etc.) on Fedora

Unfortunately, on Fedora, some Valve games have a bit of an issue regarding completely skipping playing certain audio files.
None of this causes any crashing, but can lead to a worse gaming experience, confusion, and the appearance of buggyness- and generally isn’t great.
To work around this, please refer to the following steps, and all the games’ audio will then work perfectly.

You need to open your Terminal emulator, either from the usual application menu place, or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+T, or sometimes it’s Super+T AND THEN type the following into it, entering your password when it prompts you.

sudo su
sudo setsebool -P selinuxuser_execheap 1

That’s it. Your game will now function as intended, enjoy being able to hear the soundtracks, music, sound effects, etc! Especially ‘Still Alive’, and the banger that Half-Life 2’s soundtrack is, amongst others.

PLAY THE ORIGINAL: As everyone knows, this game is a joke. It feels like no time at all was put into development and it feels hastily slapped together no thought to the og. This game has lots of bad things in it that make the game less fun than the original not to mention some blatant bugs that really mess up the game. I strongly recommend you play the original half life on the goldsrc engine.

just play the original, this game may have better graphics, but there are many bugs to experience, one of them being, the screen glitches so hard in one area, in the chapter questionable ethics, that legit it feels like as if its unplayable, and you have to either guess where you are going, or you have to use your senses to locate where you are supposed to go, other than that, another reason why you shouldnt play this game is because that every chapter is unlocked, this game was just ran through the source engine and valve just did minimal effort to fix bugs, its still better than cyberpunk 2077 though.
Just play the original half life just so then you dont have to experience the BS in HL:S

Not really sure I can recommend Half-Life: Source as an experience worth playing when you first download it. It is essentially just Half-Life thrown into the Source engine. That being said, they literally did nothing to make this game functional IN the Source engine so there are lots of bugs and issues.

IF you spend the necessary time to get the game working, utilizing external mods like HD packs and game fixes, it is a fun and recommendable experience. Since that is not the experience right after installing the game though, I cannot recommend it.

A personal favorite of mine. I used to play Half Life 1 with a physical copy back in the very early 2000's. I consider it one of the best games ever and you should pick it up if you haven't. Gordon Freeman is one of my heroes

Major issues present all over the game due it being in the same branch as Half-Life 2. In other words, this game is just an official standalone mod for Half-Life 2 that relies on the same codebase to function. However, when Half-Life 2 gets updated, they didn't take care of Half-Life: Source, leaving the game accumulate more bugs over time, and borderline unplayable since 2013.

Some other things to note:

HD content is oddly fan-made.
Mods don't fix the game completely.
Older builds has their own set of bugs that are fixed in various updates released in 2013.

Fortunately, like all other games made by Valve, it is extremely cheap on sale, so don't hesitate to try it out if you want to see what it's like, just make sure to download the mod from Mod DB that fixed some of the issues, and don't enable HD models. If you don't want to explore the changes made in this version and just want to enjoy Half-Life (not to forget Uplink and Decay), Half-Life: Source is not for you.

A complete remake of Half Life in the Source engine, it can't be bad. My only complaint is that it isn't as much a remake as it is a shiny new coat of paint. Valve was suprisingly lazy with this one, only adding slightly improved textures, ragdoll effect, water effects, and physics. While no doubt a good game, I would only say you should buy it if you don't own Half Life. It's just Half Life only slightly improved (graphicly) but the game is indeed still good.

Only for the hardcore fans or REALLY curious onlookers. With the original version still available, super cheap, and more importantly: Better in every way, there's nothing you're missing here. Granted it ain't all bad, it's at least playable and.... ummm... dynamic main menus are pretty cool...

Half-Life: Source is fundamentally broken on multiple levels. It is vastly inferior to the original Half-Life in terms of gameplay, visuals, audio, and any other aspect you can imagine.

A very buggy port that isn't faithful to the original. If you have to play Half Life 1 in Source, get the Half-Life: Source Fixed mod.

What i hate about this is all the dumb change that were made to this hl version and all the retarded bugs that havent been fixed still in 2021.. and there are some really weird one that are not in the og.. and eww the vista change the worst thing about this.. like wtf come on you can do better than this with source.. the vista is horrible, the og hl1 have a way better one..

So in this state i dont recommend that at all go play hl1 og instead its way better done..
But yes i recommend it if you use the following mod.. first one: Half-life source remastered, this totaly change hl1 source and fix bugs

second is: the 16x uspcaled textures mod it look goregeous with that

i never had or noticed any issues with this port; but i'm just sharing my honest anecdote in interest of keeping the reviews balanced. judging by the other reviews you'll probably not be as lucky. that's not to mention all the subjective changes to a game that used to have a cohesive artstyle; even if you don't run into any glitches you would probably prefer or at least not care about the differences if you played the original goldsource version.

but really; i never had any issues. i thought the lighting and water effects of the source engine had better gameplay elements with their improved graphics not getting in the way; but they certainly don't fit the game. but i'm just one guy; its probably better to just not test your luck with the gamebreaking bugs and play the original with the HD models disabled as it was intended to be played.

Even though this game wasn't meant to be anything ambitious (it wasn't supposed to be anything at all if we're gonna be honest), that doesn't meant it improves upon Half-Life in any way, actually, it does the opposite, completely ruining the experience and immersion with numerous bugs, unbalanced gameplay and graphics, and overall lack of any actual improvement. The game was solely made to test the Source engine and its capabilites (including its incapabilites which ended up being the most predominant feature in this game) and had almost no reason to be published as a standalone, purchasable product on Steam (or at least keep it that way as it wasn't as problematic in the beginning). Whichever Valve's justification is, it's not like I'm going to listen to it let alone memorize it and take is a fact since I'm already deafened by this game's terrible SFX emplacement, which was undoubtably one of the main offenders thar made this game such a hot, smoking pile of garbage (decently accurate description considering the way I put down its terribleness).

One of the greatest and most influential FPS games of all time. When it first came out Half-Life revolutionized the FPS genre. And still to this day, you can feel it's effects on many FPS games. Before Half-Life there was DOOM, Wolfenstein. These games were just about running and gunning. Half-Life changed that formula. You can see that in the opening section in the game. Half-Life slowed down the gameplay and added more elements. In Half-Life, you have to be tactical. You can't rush into every enemy otherwise you'll be dead before you know it. You have to use every tool in your arsenal to get out of tricky situations. Half-Life was a huge deal back then and now years later playing it feels really good. The soundtrack is good, weapons sounds are great and gunplay is amazing. Level design is superb. There are platforming sections, stealth sections, creepy sections, we have lots of variety. The story is well written, characters are memorable. Mysterious G-Man, security guard Barney, protagonist Gordon Freeman, everyone has a charm to them. Enemy design is great. Headcrabs, houndeyes, every alien has a distinct feature and distinct behaviour. This game was ahead of its time, and it shows. It really is a masterpiece and better than most of the FPS games come out nowadays. If you are a FPS game fan and haven't played it, you definitely should play it. Half-Life is and always will be every FPS lover's favourite game.

NOTE: Source version of Half-Life is glitchy. It has some bugs and graphical issues. Before playing, download a mod that fixes these issues and enjoy the game.

This is is a glitchy mess, in chapter 12 at points stuff smears on the skybox and the barnacle in blast pit does not hurt the player or any npcs. And in chapter 5 the enemy does not kill the scientist because the scripted sequence is just broken and sometimes in surface tension when you get the rpg it spawns multiple helicopters and in gonarchs lair the stuff that comes out of him leaves a black decal. Overall this is the worst way to play half life, just play the original half life which comes with deathmatch.(And the hd models in source are stolen from a mod).

Possibly the worst way to experience Half Life 1, an absolute classic. It's by no means horrible, it's certainly playable and it's still fun because, yknow, it's still Half Life, but the source engine's lighting and physics change the feel of a lot of it and make it feel more akin to playing a Gmod session than taking in Half Life as you're supposed to. A lot of bugs too, nothing game breaking as far as I've seen but they definitely ruin a lot of great moments if it's your first time. If you've played half life before it's kind of a fun gimmick to have ragdoll physics and everything, and it's nice to be able to mount this to Gmod and SFM (we wouldn't have Half Life VR But The AI Is Self Aware without this!). If you want to experience Half Life, just get the original, and if you want a more modern/updated version of Half Life, get Black Mesa.

No Offence to valve but, this is a lazy port of HL1 to the newer and more advanced source engine. this port has lots of bugs and gltiches, i reccomend instead playing HL1 rather than the Source Port, although i did had fun buggering around with console commands.

I'm gonna be honest, I only got this because of the valve complete pack. If you want to buy this expecting more than just a buggier, almost unfinished, lazy, port of half-life, don't. If you want a better port, try Black Mesa.

Literally no reason to purchase this. If you want to play the original Half-Life, this is far from the best way to do it. This port is extremely buggy and is just a more bugged version of the original. The only thing that could be considered an improvement is the more modern styled flashlight and more graphical options. The only reason you should own this is if you purchase the Half-Life complete bundle.

Whilst it has grown badly and had bad reputation on discussions and social media, I would still say the game is playable, but not better than the original GoldSrc Half-Life. This game is honestly better and more fun to just mess around with the console, rather than actually normally playing the entire game.

Lets start with the good: its half life

Now with the bad: Bad port, broken animations, bugs thats effects visually and sometimes with game play
Stick with the default half life 1 or if you really want a half life with better graphics and even design then get Black Mesa anything is better than this

As most of the recent reviews have stated, yes, it is true, this version of Half-Life is, in fact, broken as of now.
This is due to Source engine receiving several updates over the years, and Half-Life: Source not being able to utilize said changes, causing it to bug out horribly, and in some cases from what people have said, even get stuck completely, due to said bugs.
Some of the blunders I have witnessed so far are not game-breaking, I'll give it that much, but they made the experience rather awful.
It's still a good game, but if you want to play it, purchase the non-Source version of Half-Life, that one still utilizes the 'Gold Source' engine, and is not built upon the Source engine which many other games utilize, so the experience is just as originally intended.

I know it's a classic game, but if it's a broken piece of s***, it's a broken piece of s***.

Update: Okay, so I got up to Xen at one point, and I got two major bugs which actually softlocked me, one where I was in an endless reload and death loop caused by being pushed into the void during chapter transition, the other teleported me inside a wall in who knows where, outside the map. Both times required restarting the chapter or reloading an older save.

GET THE ORIGINAL VERSION, NOT THIS ONE!!!!

Bought this with the Valve Complete Pack several years ago, which also included the original version. This version of the game is bugged and unable to play as intended. After arriving at the facility a security guard was glitched and wouldn't open a door I needed to get through. After restarting the game, the same thing happened.

I gave up and tried on the original version, which had no issues. Buy that one instead.

If you want to play this to experience half life, fucking dont go with the original (Without those damned hd models too) or black mesa if low poly models cause you to have a stroke or something. only good thing about this is the Gmod Npcs and thats about it

I never played this game until recently acquiring it through a Half-Life bundle (and I have been interested in playing HL2, but didn't want to proceed to that game until I completed the first). I was 8 at the time of this game's release, but I did play other games around it's time (including Unreal Tournament and Counter Strike). Considering the context around that time for FPS titles, I think this game was rather revolutionary at the time. However, perhaps it is just HL: Source or Half-Life all-together, but the response from the bosses and enemies as to how they received damage seemed rather...difficult to ascertain entirely until they died. All in all, this game was entertaining, but not for the faint of heart (gory and has some good scares).

Worse textures, more bugs, longer load times.

Nice HL2 style menu backgrounds, motion blur, better lighting, ragdolls.

Cons far outweigh the pros on this one. Play the original gold source release instead.

Half-Life was one of the best games of its time, however, Half-Life Source does very little to honor the game it is remaking. Valve thought that it could just put the code in the source engine and call it a day, but this game needed a bit more polishing before it could be released. There are some bugs that are not even on the original game. and although having HD textures is neat, it doesn't justify the laziness that is this game. You are better off playing the original game. 4/10

After playing with it, it's super fun. Not only do you get stuff for gmod but also the game is very funny because of the glitches. Listen i wouldn't recommend the game for the full price but if it's on sale, go for it. Consider it a nice buggy vacation from the Original Half Life.

I wanted to post a recent review of the game.
About the bugs,I only saw a few and they were just some visual glitches:a scientist floating above a chair,and a weird sky box.
Now to the actual game.It's is very fun,with tons of entertainment.The enemy encounters are awesome,and blasting zombies never felt more fun.Plus this version has ragdolls,which aren't a HUGE plus but it is a little weird to see a whole bunch of dead people lying in copy pasted death poses.The soldiers are fun and challenging,the sound track is great,the puzzles are a little difficult sometimes.If this game runs on my crappy windows 7 laptop it'll work on anything.

Play the Original instead of this. This is one of the worst remasters of all time.
No mod support, balance issues. Graphical glitches, and progress breaking bugs.

The Original Half-Life is superior in every way.

Since 2013 this game has become broken. You have three options:

Try to get an older version (provided you already own the game)
Play the original
Play Black Mesa

In the pre-SteamPipe (2013) state, this Source version of the game was pretty much the greatest thing Valve could've done with the game, being a far superior version with (most of the) same assets from the original.

If you want to play the original Half-life, but not in a serious kind of way, I highly suggest this. All of the bugs in this game aren't even that bad. Most of them are just plain funny. Even though I played through the original version, I find this to be way more fun because of the enhanced engine. 10/-99

Pros:
-The game has a good difficulty progression on normal, where toward the end it was pretty difficult but once you figure it out, you can finish easily.
-Story was interesting and the ending makes you want to play the next game in the franchise.
-Many weapons to choose from to play the game however you see fit.

Cons:
-During the whole 8 hours of gameplay and finishing the game, I only saw one glitch and it was only a visual glitch on part of the map which wasn't game-breaking.

Even though usually I like writing long reviews, this time there isn't much to say, really. It's just the good ol' Half-Life. Now on Half-Life 2 engine. The original Half-Life used GoldSrc engine. Which was pretty much a modified version of Quake engine. Believe it, or not. Now the game has the full power of HL2 behind it and, naturally, it looks better. Way better. Way, way better. Back in 2004, it was a way to get that “wow!” effect from the first time you started the original Half-Life all over again. Cool-looking weapons, awesome light effects, etc, etc, etc. In other words, visually, this version looks awesome. Sounds great too. I mean, poor audio quality in the original game is a huge problem when you're playing it in some good headphones. This version? Even though it comes with the same exact awful acting, the quality is way better.

Unfortunately, you shouldn't expect this version to feel like the original. Even though yes, it's pretty much the same exact thing, thanks to the new engine it feels heavily different. And, unfortunately, changes here are not for the best. What we have here is a very lazy release that nobody even cared to test much. They just took the original, put it on Source engine and expected it to work. Since the original Half-Life was far from being the most polished games out there, you can easily imagine the result here. All those rough parts became even more rough and tons of the new bugs have appeared. And not only the regular ones, but also the graphical ones. For example,when you'll take the crowbar for the first time, there's a big chance that you'll stop seeing your weapons. Those will be there, those will work, but you won't see them. Together with your own hands. Also, the entire conveyor part during the Residue Processing chapter was completely broken in my case and it was close to impossible to see a thing. So... yeah... lazy, lazy, lazy job.

And at the point I write this review, it ultimately makes this version obsolete. It's far from feeling close to the original, while if you want the improved Half-Life experience today, you buy Black Mesa. You want some nostalgia – you buy the Steam version of the original, or (even better) go for the CD version. Because the one from Steam comes with some minor changes that may ruin the nostalgia a bit for some people. And, of course, like I've already said, if you want the updated and improved Half-Life, you buy Black Mesa. Half-Life Source? There's pretty much no need for it anymore. Back in 2004, it was nice to see the good ol' Half-Life with better visuals and sound. Nowadays? There's just no need for it. Especially thanks to how lazy and bugged it is.

This port was so bad and lazy that it inspired a team of developers to devote sixteen years of their lives to making a better one, fueled by the love and passion for the Half-Life franchise that they found and picked up after Valve failed to claim it at the Airport. And spite, don't forget the pure spite.

Either buy the original Half-life or buy Black Mesa, there's really no need to get this one unless you just want to own every Half-Life game for completions sake or curiously fumble around to see how bare bones this port actually is.

This port of half life is not worth it go buy the original version of half life or the black mesa re-imagining. This game is not worth it at all as it runs on a outdated engine and all it adds over the original game is ragdoll physics. Apart from that you are getting a watered down experience of the original that is very glitchy and broken. Don't get this it is not worth it.

Go Play the Original version. This one could have been an awesome port but there are major flaws. The Source version might look better and the physics might not be as wonky but this version is full of bugs. Many Weapons do not work as intended and the bugs are so bad, that some major bosses cannot even do damage to the player. Valve knows about this but they won't fix it since they have abandoned this game.
Until the new Half-Life releases, all the previous games are free so go ahead and play the original. (If you don't mind 4:3 and some old graphics.)

A remake of the timeless classic Half Life in the source engine. You should rather play the original, non-source version. Why? Shiny surfaces are overdone in this version, everything metal or ceramic looks overly polished. Some bugs are introduced (scientists hovering over chairs instead of sitting), some short dialogue and little character animations are missing. Things like vending machines don't work proberly to refill your health.

The nice water, shiny metal and ceramic surfaces and shadows are the major graphical updates but also stand out because they don't fit the art style of the game.

It's okay-ish, but the original is the better experience IMHO.
