Opfor takes what Half-Life built and elaborates on it with cool new weaponry and putting you into the shoes of those who were your enemies in the original, the HECU.
Cool new Squad mechanics like Medics being portable health stations and your squad actually being a proper help in gunfights helps a lot, and man you'll need all the help you can get because Opfor is known for its difficulty.
the new Aliens known as Race X are pretty cool and we would never once see them again in any other Half-Life game which is a shame.
Anyway. Opfor is a great buy for 4 bucks, you'll get around 4-5 hours out of this thing on your first playthrough and I have spent WAY more than that replaying this game using my Retail Copy of Half-Life GOTY Edition.

The good? Storytelling, ALIENS, new weapons/tools, improved Squad AI, and new enemies.
The bad? Lackluster puzzles and ladders/ropes.....
I still think it is worth a playthrough if you enjoy Half-Life!

Gearbox has literally outdone them self on this masterpiece of a game. With strikingly superior graphics for this games time and innovative story telling, this game honestly deserves a remaster.
I remember sitting, waiting for this game to be released at a young age after beating the first Half-Life.
The story is fantastic, showing a different perspective. Instead of being the protagonist Gordon Freeman, you now take place as an antagonist known as Adrian Shepard. Moving on the the multi player, it is insanely fun. The excessive amount of explosions going on around you is an exciting add-on to this game. With servers still running 20 years later, this game is fantastic. Don't think that Opposing Force lacks a cooperative mode, because one Coop server is currently running with a maximum slot of 32 players per match.
Overall, this game is a splendid masterpiece and I would recommend anyone buying. It's worth spending on a game such as this one.

*For a game older than me the graphics are great. Many games from 1999 had terrible graphics in comparsion with GoldSource games.

SPOILERS
You don't have to kill any living scientist, including Gordon. You can try, but you just fall into a Xen void. Fighting the Gene Worm at the end was awesome as well. Chef's kiss from me- mwa.

I've already left a review as to why I appreciate Half-Life and why I recommend playing the vanilla version, so I won't go into much detail in this review.
Opposing Force gives the perspective of the soldiers attacking Black Mesa, which gives a lot of insight to the overall plot of the game. You also realise that there are basically 3 factions, Black Mesa, the Army and Black Ops, all have different missions. As you're playing for the army in this regard, you're quest at first is to find Freeman, which is abandoned and it becomes all about survival against the black ops and alien horde.
Although this story was never expanded, it's none the less an awesome and worth playing expansion to Half-Life. I'm not aware of any remasters like Black Mesa was for Half-Life, but this version still holds well and I recommend giving it a go.

Unlike the other games, its the one where instead of ending at its peak it just goes on, and on, and on, and on, and on... and on... and on....

1/10 would play for combat.
Did I say that combat is same?

10/10 would never play same combat again.

This is a forgotten gem of a game. Compared to Half-Life 1, it presents a variety of new enemies and bosses, awesome weapons, cool areas like alien zoos, good puzzles, and actually has a decent story. This is what Half-Life Blue Shift should have had, but merely only expanded with the current resources instead of getting creative.
What I love about Half-Life Opposing Force is its creative liberty it takes to expand upon the ideas of the original Half-Life. It introduces the Displacer Gun, which does a great amount of damage, but also takes you to random areas in the Xen when alt-clicked, which is an insane idea! Even better, they introduce the barnacle-gun-thing (forgot its name), but it acts like a grappling hook and works really well! Other weapons are also introduced like an LMG, sniper, but I feel the creative ones take the spotlight.
The new enemies are amazing! They don't make different forms of the old ones, but instead create whole new aliens and Black Op enemies, alongside some actually useful allies. It adds a lot to the table and makes this game one of the most unique spin-offs in media history.
As mentioned in my other reviews, the graphics are nostalgic and are great for the time period they came from.
There are a few issues with the game, however. For one, the night-vision that replaces the flashlight is painfully bright. In dark areas, it actually almost creates the reverse effect so you can't see anything. Also the final boss, while being fun and presents a little challenge after exiting a Nether Portal, is way too easy. You can blame this on the regen pool, which I don't understand why people think a regen pool should be in a boss fight. It makes no sense: of course you're gonna lose health, that's the challenge. Regardless, it was still a memorable boss. One more additional thing, the Black Ops enemies were insanely powerful, especially the ones that became invisible. I did play on hard difficulty, but regardless the game shoves 20 at you simultaneously at some points, so it's almost impossible if you're not prepped, making you stuck in a cycle of saving and loading the game.
Overall, I give it a 9/10. While it had more flaws than the original Half-Life, it also presents a lot of fun stuff to the table that make me forgot anything bad about it.

The amount of additional enemies, weapons and mechanics you find are actually quite impressive, even in 2020. For example, you can climb up ropes here. You can't even do that in Half-Life 2. There are many alien weapons you can directly use, and as this is about as twice as long as Half-Life: Blue Shift, you have a good number of curated combat situations to use them in.
The game is actually quite tough, even on medium difficulty. I had to move through a few situations with save-scumming tactics - but on the whole I found it enjoyable. Thanks to the length there are several interesting story revelations, which I assume are canon. G-Man is a right cheeky bastard in this, too.
Worth your time.

The game takes you to a different perspective of the Black Mesa incident. Rather than an employee there such a scientist or security guard, you’re in the boots of Alan Shepard, a member of the HECU unit in the USMC tasked with quelling the ongoing incident at Black Mesa. However due to the circumstances at hand when you arrive, you won’t be at odds with the surviving scientists and security guards at Black Mesa, but a whole new group of aliens in addition to the ones encountered in Half Life. In addition to the new enemies, you will be exploring new areas of Black Mesa and will be armed with a new set of weapons, both HECU issue and of out of this world. But in your quest to survive against the alien onslaught in the wake of the resonance cascade, you will also be working with HECU members at times, although despite their wonky ai at times, will prove useful in fighting against enemies while also progressing through the campaign, which isn’t as long as the standard Half Life campaign but is still long enough to leave the player satisfied.
The puzzles and level difficulty is on par with Half Life but the scenery and enemies will be different. The tutorial mission isn’t in Black Mesa but instead at boot camp/training, which explores new game functions and mechanics while also showcasing much of the new weapons in the game. There is multiplayer as well but it’s not the main selling point of the game and the player base for it is low and gameplay is lacking compared to other standalone Gold Source multiplayer titles like Team Fortress:Classic, Half Life: Death Match, Day of Defeat, and Sven Co-Op. But in the event of downloading Opposing Force, the multiplayer is still worth checking out. Overall, Half Life Opposing Force is a great expansion to the universe and a great game as well. I’ll leave the story for you to explore. It’s worthy of its praise but keep in mind it’s still over 20 years old.
I recommend.

Pros:
- the pacing is better
- the weapons are better (even if the alien weapons were introduced in a lazy - albeit realistic - way)
- ropes and military teammates are a great addition, even if the rope physics is atrocious and the AI of the teammates is sub-par
- the story expanded on the lore of the original Half-Life pretty well
- Otis is a better NPC than Barney.
- There were some nice touches - I love that when you use the Xen gun while on Xen (when you first get it) it send you to the tutorial room from the original Half-Life.
- The boot-camp tutorial level is awesome! If you play it definitely do the tutorial.
Cons:
- the previously mentioned rope physics and teammate AI
- you have to go into the settings to fix the mouse, it's a bit buggy at first
- G-man looks different I think; he looks like Quentin Tarantino tbh
Definitely play this nice expansion if you enjoyed the original Half-Life.

Cons: I don't know? Probably lazy copy pasta displacer teleport location, the most annoying that ruins the flow is using the displacer in certain location that will send player straight to death pit...

Nice mix of new enemies, locations and weapons in a familiar setting, that make it much superior to say, Blue Shift.
My only complaint would be that it's outrageously difficult, even on easy. Way harder than Half Life was. You will probably die an awful lot.
Thumbs up overall though. Would love to see a remake like Black Mesa.

New weapons, new enemies, and a lonely journey. Half Life.
I think some of the levels were not really as well designed. Walking to different areas, trying to continue the story shouldnt be such a hassle. Maybe I'm dumb but there were certainly parts where I had to use other methods to get past barriers like gernade jumping. I doubt that was how I was supposed to do it, and if I didn't know how to do it I probably would have been stuck for twice as long. When I get past these barriers sometimes I look back and it just completely baffles me, how was I suppoed to get there in the first place?
Final boss felt like a dissappointment. I honestly thought it was a miniboss. The journey to the final boss was alright.
It's harder than the original half life at times but it makes for a fun experience. Not as good as the original. It is also shorter, and has a lacking story.
Some of the new weapons could have been used more for more interesting fights. Some of them were basically reskins of older weapons but with higher damage. The original half life had a problem where there were so many weapons but you only ended up using 3 for most of the game because the other weapons are just downgrades. This game forces you to switch at times but it still has that problem.
I played it for free, and I dont think I regret that.

The story is told through the perspective of a Marine grunt and it's been handled pretty well, by my estimate at least. It manages to clear up the aftermath of the Black Mesa incident and prepares ground for the events of HL2. Shephard is a bona fide badass and I hope to see him return in a future game.

Beside some defeats in mechanisms inherited from Half-Life, my problem with this game is its aim. When you use night vision, which performs the same function as flashlight in Half-Life, you can barely see the aim as it is small, green which is the same color of night vision, making aiming very difficult. Other than that, nothing is too bad. It is just an average supplement and not as amazing as Half-Life.
