Review zu Half-Life: Blue Shift
+ Einige Gegner waren recht interessant.
- Einige Sounds hallen zudem.
Half-Life: Blue Shift ist vor allem eins: Mehr Half-Life!

Compared to Half-Life 1 and the other two expansion packs (Opposing Force and Decay), Blue Shift is easily the weakest. You spend a lot of time fighting either soldiers or weaker enemy types, or listening to exposition like in Half-Life 2. The reason for this is because Blue Shift was intended to be an exclusive for the Sega Dreamcast console port of Half-Life 1, so the design needed to be toned down for console controls. The Deamcast port later got cancelled, so with the work they already had they figured it would be better to release it for PC instead than to not release it at all. I'm not in love with Blue Shift but I'm glad they did make is available on PC, it's not bad.

Blue Shift's final scene is more interesting than Opposing Force's, but its actual ending is more prosaic than the end of Adrian Shephard's story, which has left players wondering about his ultimate fate since the mission pack was first released. Maybe it's because of Half-Life 2 that we really know what happened to Barney Calhoun, but once the credits roll, it's unlikely that ending will hold you back.

As with Opposing Force, Gearbox manages to pull off an interesting campaign that provides gameplay which feels distinct from the main game. There are fewer scripted sequences than in Opposing Force, but what's here is still entertaining, with some great levels and encounters. Blue Shift also has the distinction of providing a more palatable Xen excursion than what can be found in both OpFor and the original Half-Life (though, that may be partly due to the brevity of it).
Blue Shift has a more fun final scenario than Opposing Force, but its actual ending is a bit more pedestrian than the end of Adrian Shephard's tale, which has kept players wondering about his ultimate fate since the mission pack first released. Maybe it's the fact that we actually know what happened to Barney Calhoun thanks to Half-Life 2, but this ending is less likely to stick with you once the credits roll.
Overall, this is well worth the price of admission as an enjoyable bit of Half-Life history and an engaging, if short, campaign in its own right.

And all day and all night

Cause he ain't got nobody to listen to
I'm blue

This expansion has some solid combat, enjoyable puzzles, and a good story with a unique perspective. The only knock that I have towards this game/expansion is that it is more Half-Life and in my mind you would think there would be more guns or some gameplay changes to justify it as an expansion.

In conclusion, Blue Shift, as stated before, is short and painless. You can beat it in one sitting and there's definitely fun to be had. However, unlike the base game, nothing in Blue Shift will leave much of an impact on you. Blue Shift is simply more Half-Life and not much else. But that may not be a bad thing.

Released in 2001 HL:BS follows the story of security guard Barney Calhoun and his experience during the events of the MESA incident. The game has a few memorable characters but not because they have any voice-lines, it's because their one of few characters in this game (unless you count the people shooting at you). While this isn't necessarily a bad thing in typical HL fashion this story isn't one to write home about or lose your nut over. Although, seeing the events unfold from the perspective of a guard is quite intriguing to say the least and we see many parts of MESA that I wish I had seen in the original HL
The graphics are obviously a bit dated in 2020 but I quite enjoy the pixelated character models and low resolution sounds, it's very retro and quite nostalgic and considering the technical limitations of the engine they were using as well as the time period I'd say this is pretty impressive.
I very much enjoyed this game with my only problem being it's length. The game can be beat in about 2 hours on a casual play-through and unless you are trying to complete it on the hardest difficulty level then there is no real level of replay-ability which is a shame as this is such a fun little expansion.
To conclude I'd only play HL:BS if you've played HL1 and wan't more sweet MESA action! It's low replay-ability level and length is definitely a bummer but that doesn't stop it from being a good game.

Seeing as Barney is merely a security guard with less equipment and skill than who you play in the other two instalments, it makes sense in a canon viewpoint that his time was limited because he most likely would have died if he had stayed as long as the others. This is also why the game has more of a horror atmosphere in places, because Barney is a more vulnerable character; he is the underdog of the trio and his only goal was to get out in one piece and try to help anyone along the way. It fits him as a character.
Despite the difference in tone and gameplay however, it is still very easily the worst Half-Life (altough I haven't finished Decay); the interesting POV of the security guard, its unique setting and tone are the only things it has to offer over the other games. On the other hand, it's very good for being the weakest Half-Life game as overall it is still a good game and is very enjoyable but just not up to usual Half-Life standard. I really appreciate it for what it is.
If the game was just a little longer, had a bit more engaging action, a little more original content and put even more emphasis on the horror and vulnerability tone I think people would appreciate this game far more and I believe this would help bridge the gap between this game and the other Half-Life games.

after playing the original half life and opposing force i was expecting another good expansion pack, but this was nothing compared to them, it was short and full of bugs.
characters wouldn't have dialogue when i reloaded a quick save, Dr Rosenburg would barely walk a step before stopping and needing a break, and once he just full on stopped, sometimes i couldn't move when i went back to fix it.
it adds barely any content other than a new character and some new parts of black mesa, and even those are bland in themselves.
it had some annoying puzzles near the end of the game and was much shorter than Opposing Forces.
the good parts were the start and the last endgame part, and of course the credits, because i didn't need to play the game anymore

The story is great, and interesting to experience the disintegrating world from a different perspective as a regular security guard. There isn't much else to say, just that you are playing as a regular dude doing his normal job, but one day the world is coming to an end and you have to fight to survive. If you liked the Half Life game-play and story and want to experience more, this is a great option.

It lacks weapon and enemy variety, and the levels and environments aren't as inventive as the original game or Opposing Force, but the overall quality is still fairly high. It's a more consistent experience than either of those games, and it has a lot of charm. There's a little bit more humour, and the notion of the plucky underdogs of the Black Mesa incident (the pacifist scientists and the usually incompetent and poorly trained security guards) managing to get through by working together makes a welcome change from being Freeman who becomes a well-known hero over the course of the first game, or just Shepherd, a generic soldier in OpFor.
It's a short game, but worth your time if you're a fan of the original and want to round out the experience.

Blue Shift, originally titled Guard Duty (yawn), was conceived as part of an upcoming Half-Life port to the short-lived Dreamcast, complete with visually enhanced models and textures. This port was eventually cancelled, leaving Blue Shift to debut on PC alone.
Given the game was intended as a supplement to Dreamcast players’ experience of the far meatier Half-Life itself, Gearbox’s comparatively tiny (I breezed through it in 3 hours this evening) expansion pack didn’t receive the warmest reception. Black Mesa's final hurrah is now largely considered to be the weakest entry in the Half-Life series.
And the final hurrah of that incarnation of Half-Life, which revolutionised the genre – and the medium – just a few years prior but was by now showing signs of age. The novelty was wearing off.
Perhaps it already had.
But all that said...I think I’m still willing to go to bat for Blue Shift as being the better of Gearbox’s two expansion packs.
Yeah, yeah – I can already hear the boos and the jeers. But I promise I don’t mean for this to be some ‘hot take’ or sarky contrarian opinion: I genuinely believe the game’s construction is significantly better than that of Opposing Force’s.
Where Opposing Force introduced a cast of generic, poorly conceived new enemies – the risible Race-X – Blue Shift is content to work with what Half-Life gave it, and in doing so it actually inches a fraction closer to where Valve were taking the series themselves.
Similarly, Blue Shift snubs the convention that FPS expansion packs ought to include a host of new weaponry – a convention Opposing Force wholeheartedly embraced (some, like the sniper rifle, were useful and satisfying; others, like the barnacle gun and displacer cannon, felt thrown into the game with little thought as to how they might enhance gameplay). Forget the wrench and desert eagle – it’s back to the crowbar and the glock.
Where Blue Shift shines is in its tight structure, which propels you through the facility’s familiar environs with a surprisingly focused narrative. Objectives are clearly explained, and it rarely feels like you’re just aimlessly wandering the steel corridors of old, waiting for the next enemy to pop up.
Sure, there’s some weak sequences: an unimaginative – if even outright bad – return to Xen and a few trivial treks through industrial tunnels populated with little more than the occasional headcrab. Warning signs, I think, that we’d seen enough of this setting, and the designers were struggling to concoct new areas to explore.
Fortunately, the best of Blue Shift involves set-pieces driven by unique NPC’s – a clear and successful evolution of one of Half-Life’s key innovations. It’s where Half-Life was about to go in a big, big way just a few years later.
For the first time in the series (up until this point): we have scientists with names. Now, that might not seem like a big deal, and no, they aren’t exactly brimming with personality, but it goes a long way towards defining the purpose of your mini-adventure, leading to a tense and inventive finale. Who’d have thought that the simple act of pressing a button at the right time would prove more interesting than firing blindly at a giant bilious baby monster or whatever the terrible-looking alien boss at the end of Opposing Force is?
So whilst Blue Shift may not end up being all that memorable or ambitious, it deserves a reappraisal of its evident strengths: namely its objective-based gameplay and strong narrative propulsion. As a tiny piece of Half-Life, it works, and I don’t think any amount of new weapons or enemies would improve it: it does just fine with what it has.
I’m glad the ‘official’ or ‘canonical’ Black Mesa adventures ended here, though – Valve had no desire to return (they had insisted on nuking BM in OP4) and by the time the finale comes around it’s pretty clear Gearbox had reached the end of the line creatively.
But should you desire more Black Mesa / Xen / GoldSrc, there’s a wealth of brilliant and creative mods out there, and they’re still coming in even now.
A few of them even manage to stand tall against Blue Shift and Opposing Force themselves, but we can at least thank both expansion packs - products of their time - for showing just how much potential the Black Mesa setting had.

Cons: Pretty much original HL with barely anything new, lack of weaponry, pretty short because it's meant for Dreamcast.

yeah? kinda? It's not awful. It's extremely skippable because it's so short and ends with no fanfare. Kinda sad to see such a great premise was done so dirty. I think if this had been 4 hours longer It'd be an 8 instead of this.
Honestly this got uninstalled after I beat it. No need to ever come back to this. Don't seek this out unless you absolutely need more Half-Life and already played Opposing Force.

Compared to Half-Life and Opposing Force, I think the graphics of the game is enhanced, though many scenes are too dark even I have adjusted the brightness to maximum, making me feel uncomfortable. The atmosphere is enhanced, too. It is spooky and finally brings a sense of horror that I did not feel in the previous two games. I enjoyed it a lot. Unfortunately, the game is too short. I was expecting six hours playtime like Opposing Force, yet it only has three hours. It feels like the show is already over when the best of it just begins.

-If you aren't able to look around go to Options>Mouse and enable raw mouse input
-Before you save, switch to your crowbar cause there's a glitch that will make you start shooting when you load a save
