I’m not a Half Life fan and I’m aware these games were technical marvels at the time, I’m pretty open minded about old games, but this is just a waste of time. The characters in this story are so dull and robotic that it’s hard to get invested in anything that happens.

Taking inspiration from Final Fantasy X, Valve decided to bust everyone’s balls and add subtitles to a preexisting game, avoiding the number three the same way I avoid child support.
You once again play as Gordon Freeman, a man who got too use to taking out his postal worker rage on the marines and aliens in Black Mesa and now decided that these alien bastards and their human conspirators are next. After the events of Half-Life 2, Gordon gets pulled out of the wreckage by DOG and then gets a big ol’ hug from Alyx before continuing his rampage on murdering anything that has the balls to pick a fight with him.
Episode One is basically a continuation of the first in terms of gameplay, not really breaking new ground, but if you like Half-Life 2, then here you go, more Half-Life 2! The game should take you about three hours to complete from start to finish and depending on if you’re bad at it or not.
Looking back at it, Episode One seems to be just like a little filler episode that exists to get Gordon and Alyx from the End of Half-Life 2 to the start of Episode Two. Its not bad by any means, but you can tell that they had their resources planned for elsewhere. They DO introduce the Hunter, the main-line enemy from Episode Two in video footage from Episode One, but other than that, there are no new weapons or equipment or anything like that. You don’t even get the Super jump from Half Life 1 or anything.
You spend most of the game with Alyx Vance, Half Life 2 poster girl and totally going to be your girlfriend in the future dude just trust me. Alyx is basically the story steerer of this...Expansion pack? Can I call it that?
Either way, you basically get from point A to point B because Alyx isn’t a big ol dumbo and knows where she has to go. She’s also fun to be around, basically making what might have been a three hour slog into a pretty fun adventure. Alyx also isn’t a slouch in a fight either, so you don’t really have to baby sit. I admire that she’ll CQC karate kick a zombie before it can get her while I just violently bash its stupid headcrab skull in with a crowbar like an upset warehouse employee.
Also she gave Gordon a big hug. That’s like, 2 points to the final score right there. Good on her, he needs one.
This is my...Uh, fourth time I think? Fourth time going through Episode One since it was released back in 2006, so on this playthrough I decided to mod it a bit. I used MMOD, a Mod that is quickly becoming my mod of choice for Half Life 2 games. But even with vanilla the game is still pretty good.
Outside of one new enemy, its basically a “if you liked Half life 2 you’ll probably like this.” Expansion, which really isn’t a complaint since basically all Expansion Packs are like this.
I’m calling it an Expansion Pack so you can feel as old as I do.
If, by some miracle, you haven’t played Episode One yet, then yeah I would recommend it, you can finish it in between bathroom breaks and its sort of vital to the start of Episode Two. Outside of a new enemy type, you won’t be getting too much new, but if you just wanted more Half Life and this time with a fun teammate to hang out with, then hey, here you go.
Half-Life 2: Episode One: Chapter Five: Level 12 gets 8 lost crowbars out of 10.
A group of parrots is called a pandemonium.
The resistance gave me a pistol and one grenade and told me to pull the pin when Overwatch gets close.

We'll see concerning that.
Half-Life 2 is an incredible FPS. So it makes sense that the first of two story additional items to Half-Life 2 are likewise incredible FPS games. Episode One doesn't add a lot to the narrative of a specific substance past setting up the occasions of Episode Two, yet the ongoing interaction setpieces and level plan are intriguing to the point of supporting the 3-4 hours of strong shooter interactivity that players of the past games will know pretty much everything about.
Episode One depends a ton on zombie setpieces, it seems like - a ton of the game's runtime is enjoyed managing zombies, regardless of whether in the city's underside (trusting that a lift will show up) or in a neglected clinic that isn't actually deserted. There's still a ton of Consolidate to battle, and every one of those battles feel incredible.
Alyx is probably the most amazing aspect of the game as well - you make them follow along fundamentally constantly, and her quality is especially useful in establishing you in the game's story, and giving you somebody to definitely battle close by, rather than significant length with very little human contact. It hypothetically makes the game more straightforward having an unkillable person battling close by you, yet it's actually provoking to the point of staying fun.
There's something else to say, truly - assuming you do, for reasons unknown, currently own Half-Life 2 and not this, and you delighted in it - then, at that point, truly, this is an easy decision. It contains all the exemplary Half-Life 2 components - elegantly composed characters, physical science based battle, strong and fulfilling gunplay, and endurance frightfulness segments. Certainly worth the purchase - regardless of whether, some way or another, I began playing it in 2018 and just barely picked it back up to complete the last two sections of the game this year. What's going on with I?

Episode 1 almost plays like an extended Ravenholm as the Grav Gun is the central focus of gameplay from the beginning of the game, and arguably throughout the remainder. That is not to say there isn’t room for some good gunplay, but it is to say that I beat the entire game firing only a single bullet and using the Grav Gun for the remainder.
The crumbling ruins of City 17 are an awesome site to behold. Dr. Kleiner's voice resonates messages of hope as well as warning throughout the city while rebels attempt to flee and the Combine infrastructure collapses. The ending arrives rather abruptly, and turns into a rather tedious and short escort mission. It is at this point where the game starts to feel a bit rushed to the conclusion. In the end Episode 1 is more reminiscent of an expansion pack than a stand alone game.
A must have for completionists, and to appreciate the wonderful story of Half Life 2, even if you only play through it once.

It has some new missions and puzzles. The graphics, sounds, physics, and AI are the same as they were in Half-Life 2. Because both games use the same engine. It is a short but nice follow-up game. Spending some time with Alyx was worth it.
Pros:
+ A nice follow-up game.
+ New missions and puzzles.
+ You can choose which chapter to play.
+ Fine interactions/teamwork with Alyx, as well as getting to know her.
Cons:
- It is a short one.
- Lack of replayability.

Episode 1 is probably the black sheep of the mainline Half-Life games not because it's bad (it isn't bad at all), but because it doesn't do a whole lot either. Whereas Episode 2 was more of Half-Life 2 and did a lot more things with it, Episode 1 is basically just more Half-Life 2 in terms of gameplay and not much else. Episode 2 built upon Half-Life 2, Episode 1 is more of the same. There's a new zombie variant, some story, and that's pretty much it. Most of Episode 1 is you and Alyx traversing through City 17 while fighting enemies along the way. At most Episode 1 exists to keep pedaling the story along from Half-Life 2 to Episode 2, Episode 1 really serves to bridge the gap in between. It's not outstanding by any means although it's still a good game, and it's a requirement when playing through Gordon Freeman's adventures. Yeah, do get this game, just don't expect it to be as spectacular or different like Episode 2.

HALF-LIFE 2: EPISODE ONE
Zitat:
89/100
The first episode and the 'small' continuation of the Half-Life 2 storyline explaining some lore things and throwing a whole new puzzles and pleasant achievements at you to make the storytelling enjoyable. It's Valve's kind of thing to give you tools and decent physics to work with, so you can thrash your enemies with pallets, bricks, tables, even with the mattress. The game gives you a nice amount of weapons to choose from, however one of the achievements requires you to spend the only one bullet and it isn't an enemy, instead you can use your gravity gun, crowbar, grenades and rocket launcher freely as they are not firing 'bullets', I must say that it sounded dumb before I decided to handle this ultimate challenge... It felt so satisfying to pull it off and truly experience the power of physics, crowbar and your gravity gun. As I said the storytelling is good and explains a lot about the main game's plot.
Bought the game from the Orange Box for 2 bucks and the whole package was overwhelmingly worth it.

Step 1: Boil some water, ideally 2-3 cups.
Step 2: Set a timer for 3 minutes, put the ramen in the pot, and stir occasionally.
Step 3: Turn off the heat and drain the water from the pot.
Step 4: Pour the flavor packet in the pot and stir.

And the repetitiveness is just terrible. Just how many cars do I have to push into holes to stop an endless stream of antlions? That thing got old the moment it appeared, but no, they make you do it again and again.
So you say you don’t like doing the same stuff over and over again? Great, because we have an electronic door for which you have to find the switch somewhere in the pitch dark. And when you do it, there is another. And another. And another. Yeah, we are really lazy when building levels so guess what? There is a group of people you have to escort from A to B. And when you do it, go back to A, because there is another group to escort to B. Then you will have to do it again. And after that, guess what you have to do? That’s right, the same thing again. And then again, just for good measure.
Plus, present (or rather, absent) are the same things that plague the whole series: no map, no coherent storyline (lack of coherent story is spun to mean “ambiguous” and “ambiguous” is spun to somehow mean great), and often no clear objectives, so you will easily find yourself not quite knowing where you should go, while not quite knowing what to do and definitely not knowing why. Granted, the situation is better here than in the first Half-Life game, but worse than in Half-Life 2.
And during the whole time, the game offers you a giant middle finger from developers in the form of “witty” remarks from Alyx, in which she (or rather they) mock you for doing all the stupid repetitive things the game makes you do, while not having any of the things I mentioned in the above paragraph (Alyx, by the way, got extremely annoying extremely fast). “Too bad we don’t have a map”, Alyx says at one point; “Wow, this again”, at another; “Good thing you know what to do, Gordon” in a situation when you don’t know what to do, except that you should somehow stop the core from exploding. On the surface, I guess this is supposed to be tongue in cheek, but in reality it is a giant FU to the player. “See, we make you do stupid things in a lousy game; we make fun of you for doing it; and you are gonna love us and convince yourself that this is a great game.” And sadly, many people do.
Play this only if you got it for free and you hate yourself.

Easy to get 100% achievements in this one. Could take you maybe 6 hours at worst if you do the story and then have to replay, which you won't have to if you follow guides carefully.

lets start with the good: Continues the story and clears up some questions from half life 2, much more amazing visuals and design (for the most of it)
now with the bad: after the 1st two chapters the game becomes a bit more boring, since when was waiting a long time in the dark for an elevator where zombies keep spawning fun?
and finally as you progress through the game it just feels it gets more worse, however it does pick up again for a bit.
In the end i say: although theres alot of bad stuff, there is alot of good too, give it a try it can be fun, just sadly some parts ruin that.

When you get down to it, the only major complaint about Episode One is that it's over so quickly. There are only four to six hours of gameplay, and veteran first-person shooter fans will definitely find themselves at the lower end of that range.
The only thing truly new in Episode One is the single-player story. Before you know it,
you've escaped from City 17
, the credits are rolling, and you're left wanting more.

Story beats aside, i had great fun playing this again, the best section is the hospital chapter where you get to shotgun your way through waves of zombies and combine soldiers with Alyx. The weakest section is sadly right near the end where you have to transport npc's over and over again, i forgot how repetitive this part was, you have to do it like 5 times it's ridiculous!

The sense of urgency, due to the collapse occurring, really instills a constant feeling of hecticness and chaos. Also, by having Alex as a more constant companion throughout the episode results in a feeling of greater togetherness, which I liked, rather than just playing as a solo problem solver. Gameplaywise, the variety of physics-based puzzles, weapon locating progression, and traversing an array of environmentally diverse areas within a cohesive-looking city is simply great. Overall, excellent episode and love the developer commentary bonus.
