But unlike these mentioned games, this one just bored me. All you do is walk around and read letters and notes to piece your families story together. Which is not even a great story (maybe except for the sister's story)!
Don't bother with this game. It's truly just a waste of time and money.

People who rank on games like this over gameplay, or length, or, the fact it didn't get them laid
like, it's a walking simulator, WALKING SIMULATOR, you play it when you're burnt out, and life has hit you pretty hard lately, and just enjoy the journey. If you want more, go play lol till some 14 year old spams the f word at you till you rage quit.

Would I recommend this? I'm not sure. I think it would be fine to just read the storyline or listen to the voice acting? I don't know if it was special enough for me to not have just spent the time watching a queer film instead. Eventually I got tired of opening cabinets...

I played Gone Home back when it came out, and despite its flaws, it introduced me to that new kind of adventure exploration games that was beginning to emerge at the time. Like many players, back then I went after the buzz and didn’t have any particular expectations about the gameplay and plot. Expecting a regular adventure game and getting a “walking simulator” can already disappoint a lot of people. A story resembling a murder/mystery turning out to be a coming-of-age story, made people frustrated (which was my case) and even angry. Revisiting it now without those unfunded expectations, I still think the developers took a risk hinting at a mystery setting and then not delivering
(I mean, not even the side-story regarding mysterious uncle gets any closure)
. But in general, it’s clear from the start that it’s not that kind of game.
In Gone Home, the player essentially explores a mansion looking for clues about whereabouts of PC’s sister and family. Gameplay allows you to interact and inspect most items spread throughout the house, but there isn’t any kind of obstacles or puzzles to solve
(Case in point: one of the achievements is to finish the game in under a minute)
. The best thing about the game is how detailed and credible the mansion’s rooms are. Even if the story is not your cup of tea, exploring the house is rewarding by itself, with all the minor items contributing to the idea that the house is inhabited by real people. (And of course, bonus nostalgic points if you’ve lived through the 90s!) If I had to point out an issue that breaks the credibility of the game, is that the way Gone Home exposes the main story points is not very organic
(I mean, how many love letters can you have spread throughout a house?)
, an issue that has been elegantly solved in the 2017 Tacoma by the same team.
The voice acting is pretty good, the diegetic music based on the riot grrrl punk movement is great, and the incidental music is also spot on, all contributing to an immersive experience.

Completionist Review:
Rating: Fairly easy to 100% with a few runs, the game isn't very long.
Can be completed in one run: No, certain achievements need modifiers that disable other achievements. Minimum 4 runs would be needed if you include your first casual run.
Chapter Select: No, but it doesn't need it.

Would absolutely recommend this game 100% for anyone whom enjoy those stories that just pull on your heart strings!
Achievements: Took me about 7 hours to 100%, but it's definitely possible to do it faster - especially if you don't go in blind, like I did. There are two very different speedrun achievements, and they're actually rather easy if you know what to do. I was able to get both on my second tries, and I'm by no means any speedrunner. So you should be able to do these as well!

A nice story game , that you can play tru on 4 hours game time. the story is nice and has some funny twist , that shock you a bit. the game is really good when it comes to story and how effect is in the game... just sometimes hard to search for clues.. but that also make it more exiting .... when you need to enter places you not really want to go.

Still here? Good, because despite this this game has a very nice story told by memories. And it may lead towards many interpretation of its final. I like to think the real way is the best possible way, but i'm a deep romantic, so try to understand me. This game then touches 2 subjects very personal to me, living abroad far from my family and.. the other one, that you'll understand in the game.
Cute voice in the narration.

The default settings do have the house very dark, even with the lights on, which is inconvenient, but can be changed in the settings. A harder thing to work around is doors and drawers not opening or closing fully if Katie is too close. This is intended to make it feel more realistic, but because in real life one can just move out of the way and finish opening it, it removed some of the immersion for me.
Even with the flaws, I found this game to be well worth the money because while it is no necessarily a lengthy game, it is an entertaining and valuable game.

I played Gone Home on Linux. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs or glitches. There is an AF toggle; an AA toggle; an AO toggle; a Vsync toggle; an FOV slider that went from 60-90 and 3 other graphics options. The games save system is to save on exit and there is just the one save slot. Alt-tab didn’t work. I did find the mouse movement to be a little funky where it felt slow and unresponsive at times but normal at others. This didn’t seem to correspond to a frame rate issue as that was always 60+ FPS. The game seemed to use 100% of my GPU for much of my play through, which given the detail level seemed odd, but the performance was great.
Game Engine: Unity
Graphics API: OpenGL
Save System: Save on Exit
Disk Space Used: 3.03 GB
Input Used: Keyboard and Mouse
Settings Used: AO; AF; AA; Bloom on; Motion Blur off; Shadow Distance at Max; 90 FOV @ 1080P
GPU Usage: 1-100 %
VRAM Usage: 1667-1876 MB
CPU Usage: 16-33 %
RAM Usage: 3.1-3.5 GB
Frame Rate: 72-121 FPS
Overall if you enjoy walking sims you should give Gone Home a try. It has a great atmosphere and story as well as really nails it’s time period. I finished my play through in 110 minutes although I didn’t find all possible clues; journal logs and secrets. It is easily worth it’s current price of $16.99 CAD.

Before playing Gone Home, I made a specific point not to read any reviews as to not spoil the story, so I in no way knew what to expect. Because of that, every minute I played through the main story I was braced for a potential scare or horrific encounter that never came. When I happened upon them, I thoroughly enjoyed what most games would call Easter Eggs, but their abundance in this game would make them more like main content. Each note I read, cassette I listened to or combination I cracked helped me to dive deeper into the lives of the characters, and that's where I think this game most flourished.
I believe the shortcomings of the game had to do with the main story progression. The problem was not with the content of the story, which I found enjoyable and sincere, but more with how the game tried to move you along. I thought the game lacked some difficulty, I hoped that careful examination would result in me being better able to progress the game, but the main path felt quite linear, and progression didn't come at any challenge. I was not specifically rushing, but I moved along after what I thought was sufficient examination of a room, expecting that I'd be back to pick through it with a fine comb at a later date when I needed to find a clue I had missed. The story, I thought despite some specifically misleading early clues, was pretty predicable, and after completing the main story I felt as if I had a pretty complete picture of most of the main events. Because of this, after completing the last letter I didn't feel particularly motivated to retrace my steps and continue to enjoy the many objects that I'm sure I missed along the way.

Gone Home is a lot like Dear Esther - there's not a lot of gameplay meat on the bone here, but I liked Dear Esther and if you're aware of what you're getting into with a 'walking simulator'(or if you're feeling generous, an interactive art piece) there's nothing wrong with the genre.
Where Gone Home stumbles is, ironically enough, its story. Perhaps I was spoiled by the reviews like [GAY SOBBING INTENSIFIES] or just by osmosis of people talking about it, but even if I hadn't been the set-up becomes very obvious within the first ten minutes or so. Several beats feel forced and cliche, and at times are at odds with information the game gives you on how certain characters act. Also Sam's friend Daniel gets done dirty by her for almost no reason, and it's uncomfortable.
There's not a lot of gameplay to talk about in Gone Home. The entire game is wandering around a large, empty house at a slow pace. There is no run button(which about halfway into the game becomes excruciating as you backtrack) and the only options you have are move and an interact button.
Luckily Gone Home, like Dear Esther, is incredibly short, so the lack of any real gameplay doesn't overstay its welcome. However, a 15$ buy-in price for a game that'll net you about 30 minutes to complete even taking your time is a steep ask.

+ Voice acting: Sam's voice actor did a fantastic job.
? Game length: It took me under 4 hours to complete a normal playthrough (almost all journals), get both speedrun achievements and play the game again to get all missing achievements.
- Main story: The main story is just too short and is entirely focused on Sam. I would've liked to find out more about the parents and maybe even Katie and the dude who had the house.

However, where the game really fails for me is the atmosphere. The house is big, empty, dark and the rain and thunder don't really help. I felt afraid the ENTIRE time while playing this, even though the Internet had told me there would be no jump scares. That creepy basement, those creepy passages, having to walk into a dark and scary looking room towards a little rope to turn on the light, it is horrible. My mind saw a million places that ghosts or monsters could jump from. And you find an Ouija board, with scary things some ghost could have said, and that makes it even worse.
So why is this a problem? Simple: if you want me to feel the story, go through the narrative emotionally, the WORST thing you can do is clench my heart and stomach in fear. Fear blocks out everything, and I stopped enjoying the game after walking through the front door. Only in retrospect can I appreciate the story, when the nightmare of that empty creepy place is gone and I am looking at my desktop again. After a few rooms, with the thunder echoing outside while I scrambled for the light switch, we simply turned off the sound. Only when subtitles appeared, indicating that Sam was telling a story, did we turn it on, and as soon as Sam was done we muted it again. Her voice-acting is great, so well worth it, but every creak, thud and other sound just made me feel an uncomfortable shiver. I started noticing shapes in curtains that scared me and I felt nothing but fear.
And that is why I do not recommend it. It's a decisive game in gaming history according to several articles on the Internet, so I'm happy to have played it. But I'm also SO happy it's done. Whew...

This replay confirmed that Gone Home is a game with a capital G. As welcome as the LGBT stuff is, the real groundbreaking stuff is the way that it makes you compile this knowledge of the characters and the story through your own exploration. How the narrative becomes an absolute duet between the bread crumbs the designers have scattered around the house and your own desire as the player to study this house, really reflect on it, and use its' visual and set design to build your own image of these characters. It helps that the designers seem to have given an insane amount of thought to every object and note in the game, giving you just the right amount to make the storytelling clear while also allowing your imagination to fill in the blanks. When I figured out what happened to Terry and why he writes about the things he does, I dropped the controller on my lap and just stared agape at the screen, trying to process how Fullbright had told me a story without ever having explicitly told me.
Look guys, as I said, it's just f*cking genius.

You play as Katie, who's back from her year abroad in Europe. When she gets to the family's new house, there's nobody home. She begins to investigate the house and unveils many secrets buried in it.
Don't believe the homophobic reviews (some of them didn't understand the game at all), there's much more to the game than what these players have seen, as the narration is mainly told through items and the setting itself.

Through more searching, you discover that your sister Sam is very much a product of the 90s' and is enveloped within the punk scene, she is at the peak of her coming of age and her feelings towards another girl consumes her every thought. This relationship unfortunately becomes the prime motive of the entire game, and this is Gone Home’s downfall, the relationship is promoted to the forefront and provides only slight interest for the player.
The biggest downfall, however is at the end of the game when you open the attic, all the built-up atmosphere and time you have spent exploring every corner of the house is completely wasted, and the player is left feeling disappointed. This is most defiantly not a fully-fledged game and even when on sale, you’re likely to regret your purchase.

The reason I still recommend it: the gameplay itself (while it lasted) was actually quite compelling. I enjoyed the story elements I did find, and was interested enough to keep searching around for answers. If you look into every nook and cranny before stumbling into the ending, this is quite good. Unfortunately, I made it to the end too fast, and didn't really get the nuances of the story.
If you like slow, exploration games, then you will probably like this.

What did I get out of this game? As a fan of rock and alternative music, I definitely enjoyed the posters of some of my favourite bands around the house, and the magazines covering stories of some hot celebrities in my circles (hot as in popular, thank you very much). And I sure did like the voice acting and I'd lie if I'd say I didn't get at least a little bit invested in the story of Sam and Lonnie.
But mostly, I found the game quite boring. More puzzles would have been to its advantage. As for now, you just walk around a house (and god, what a slow walker you are), looking through drawers. For me just a bit bigger than my own home. I don't think it would be very much different to walk around in my own house, snooping through my own sisters' closets and boxes and looking at my own parents' old photos and casette tapes. Maybe that would even be more interesting.
I'm sorry to say that - unless you have way too much money in your pocket or you know yourself to be super into realistic house touring game experiences - I can't recommend buying this game.

While I did enjoy the game for what it is, I don't believe Gone Home is nearly as solid as TACOMA, Fullbright's later release. The characters are rather simple, while the main two are given sufficient development to the point where the overall narrative is enjoyable, Gone Home sorely lacks the same level of development for the characters outside that central spotlight despite being mentioned frequently enough to warrant that detail. As is the case for the mother Janice, the father Terry, and to a much lesser extent Kaitlin. While the parents each have a side-narrative, neither of them conclude in any way that feels satisfying which is unfortunate considering how comparatively well the main story is expressed.
Regardless, if you like this style of game then I certainly do recommend despite any shortcomings. If you're not familiar with walking sims then I'm slightly more wary of recommending Gone Home, especially at its full £15 asking price.

Gone Home is a first-person exploration/mystery adventure game. You play as a college student visiting home, only to discover that the house is empty. As you wander through your childhood home, you examine the rooms and the objects within to learn about the identities and personalities of the people who live there—and deduce their relationships to one another. There's a bit of a story to the game, but it's not really told directly to the player: it exists in the form of objects in the world that you either find, or you don't. Connections that you either make, or you don't.
It's an interesting, experimental take on narrative-based adventure games and it generally works very well. There's something quietly nerve-wracking about snooping through an empty house... a feeling that there may be something supernatural at play, or something mundane, or something in-between. Gone Home is one of those games where not much is going on, but nonetheless creates a palpable tension that imbues each scene.

If you're looking for challenging game play, try The Painscreek Killings or L.A. Noise.
If you're looking for a story with contemporary characters, try Life Is Strange.
If you're looking for something where all you have to do is point and click, try Her Story or Telling Lies.
If you're still tempted to play Gone Home, wait for a sale. It's a $5 game at this point.

Super immersive gaming experience. Even though there aren't jump scares or anything like that, there is such an unsettling
vibe throughout the whole game. Total adventure all the way through, and way more to explore than I expected.
11/10- highly recommend.

Set in 1995 - things that were odd then are ho-hum now.
New buyers (its 2020 now) go into options menu *before* playing. I'd pick 'turn on lights' and also raise the brightness & lower the music.
To make it more relaxing, also choose 'unlock doors', and 'commentary' - that way you'll stroll the house with no back-tracking, and hear bits of author's commentary.
Buy it on sale. re: 'REPLAY'?... only to get achievements:
