I'm writing this review to the person who has never played a geneforge game and wants to determine if they should play this game or if they should play the original. I'm going to put my points to consider in the order in which I think they are most important when deciding between a remake and an original game.
*I tried the original and didn't like it. Will I have a different experience here?*
The remake removes some of the more confusing and frustrating gameplay aspects of the original. This is a great game to give the series a second chance and you will learn well into the 2-hour trial if the game is different to your liking.
*Compatibility*
The original geneforge has some problems running on windows 10. I've gotten all the games to work with some weird compatibility settings but you don't have to worry about that with the remake. This game will run. If compatibility is your primary concern then honestly look no further.
*Story*
The stories are different but the remake's story is largely faithful to the original Geneforge. Geneforge has a story full of mystery and slow presentation. You will hear rumors of things before you see them, and the first time you see something it will usually be in a hostile context. The remake presents the same story but with much faster pacing. There is also more content and everything is presented to you much more quickly. If you prefer to be directly told and shown a lot of what is going on then you will prefer the remake. If you're okay with the story moving along slowly so that you can discover things at your own pace, you will prefer the original.
*Gameplay* In the original Geneforge, most characters are pretty simple. They have a basic attack and they have a health bar. Your character has a few bells or whistles but for the most part you get ahead of your opposition with good positioning and use of the action economy. In the remake, everything from your units to the basic enemies now has a special abilitiy and your success is largely determined by how well you use those abilities.
If you play a shaper, your creations no longer gain experience but there are more ways to improve them with essence. The remake definitely rewards you for shaping and reshaping your army frequently to meet your needs, whereas the original rewards you for making a team of creatures and maintaining them over time.
If you play a guardian, you'll be focusing on your defenses a lot more than in the original. Geneforge 1 guardians could oneshot practically any enemy but in this game nobody can really pull that off and melee attacks are harder to connect.
If you play an agent, you'll get better crowd control and you'll get it earlier, but a lot of the exploits which made agents unique to play in the original are no longer present.
The biggest difference between the two is that in geneforge 1 most attacks will one or twoshot the enemies and melee attacks are common and powerful. In Mutagen everyone has far more health and only a few creature types have meaningful melee attacks. If you like using abilities and fighting at range then you'll enjoy the remake more. If you enjoy abusing AI and positioning and jumping on people with high-damage melee attacks you'll enjoy the original's gameplay more.
That's pretty much it to consider, outside of the sales price. I will say that after playing through the remake I started playing the original again and am having a lot of fun. They're both great games and though I prefer the original you should play whichever one you'll like more.

Me, I like it - the Spiderweb Software games that is, not Marmite. If you've played the Avernum games, or the older Exile games, or the original version of the GeneForge games, or the Avadon-games, etc. etc. and liked 'em, you'll probably like this too, since they all share much the same design-sensibilities and general atmosphere. So hey, grab yourself another slice with a good layer of Marmite! If you're in the other camp... well, just move right along and leave us to our feast of 90's-era pixelated PC-RPG goodness. You wouldn't understand.

Maybe you liked Divinity but thought it was just so darn long a game... but you liked the quest system?
This game touches all of these games and others in the genre they come from. Story is key; this isn't an action game. Turn based game is based on turns in combat, but you can wander the map and fast travel pretty quickly, and once you unlock a new travel location you can warp there from any exit.
This product has the feel of one I could put a hundred hours into, so some of the quick pros/cons and observations include:
- starting zones are fairly empty and thus boring; this is a good tutorial area and it passes quickly
- quicksave/quickload function are F3/F4, which is very useful for a first encounter with a new foe; there are a total of 20 save slots, with 1 being assigned to the quicksave, and another to auto-save
- the script for some encounters is very simplistic, which has a slight effect on immersion to the story; most tutorials and informationals can be banished immediately - it's a popup message, not an animation
- having too many followers means you can't use much magic in combat >:D
- always recharge your Essence & Energy when you find a well!
With 3 classes to choose from there is replay value in this product, and (even as a new player) I can already see that different builds will eventually work in the same way as Fallout does; if you're a fighter type you might not find some things that Shapers (magic users) can because you lack sufficient magical stats. That alone will have me on a second playthrough.
I find that this is a solid product all around at its sale price of $15, and I'm not sorry that I bought the Deluxe Edition for $20... but that's about the right value in my opinion. At full price, if you've got another game you're into... wait for the next sale.
@Spiderweb Games - well done, lads and ladies. My single request: maybe in a future update you would consider adding a hotkey to toggle running speed? The walk is already a pretty good clip, but when I gotta go, I gotta go FAST!! Even if the whole game speed increased with that hotkey (so the spawns/enemies/NPCs move fast too) that would be fine.

Thankfully, the tabletop-esque approach of explaining what your character sees and feels when entering an area has aged surprising well and isn't hindered at all by the much-improved graphics. The story remains engaging from a conceptual level as well, though seeing that premise play out oddly fades into the background midway through to focus on the mystery of the game's namesake. The details of what has happened, and is now happening, on this abandoned island are spread out so sparingly that I found myself hoping for more reveals over the power-ups and tools I needed to survive. Geneforge managed to keep that hunger for answers alive for the over 50 hours it took me to get to those classic (and very reactive) ending slides.
The creations at the center of this series have so much potential for strategy themselves that I tended to forget my character could do anything himself. I left so much on the table magic-wise (not to mention all the skills other classes would be better suited for) til the endgame due to that focus. Which itself made one of the possible ending rewards all the more fulfilling.
The game's endings themselves are also plenty rewarding. I found myself irritated for all the right reasons. I didn't manage to play things out like I wanted to, not because the game didn't give me the option, but because I couldn't see how the situation would allow it. Geneforge proves its central lesson by forcing you into these situations while begging you to make another choice and points out exactly how you, and those before you, broke bad with some fantastic parting words.
On a more grounded note, I wouldn't recommend jumping into this game for the first time on Veteran difficulty, however much RPG and tactical game experience you have. I played my entire first game through on that difficulty and I can't help but feel like I would have had a better time if it was a little easier. Attrition is such a strong force in this game, not just within an area, but within the battles themselves. I spent the first ten to twenty areas heading back to town to recharge between individual fights and that really damages the pacing. Though, if the above is any indication, clearly not enough to ruin the whole experience for me.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going go ahead and start my no-creations-pacifist run.

So far the story has been great, the factions I have met so far are the Awakened and Obeyers, and the characters I have been interesting and clearly have their own motivations and goals.
Switching between menus has been a bit finicky (especially inventory management) but it hasn't been that much of a bother.
I am playing as a Guardian without following any build guides or strategies and so far combat has been challenging but not overwhelming. However, since I haven't completed the game, I don't know how optimised your built has to be to survive endgame.
What I really liked so far is that each zone has a purpose even when you don't have a quest to do in that area and that you get rewarded for general exploration (via Lore, Skill/Spells from Canisters, Loot, etc.)
I would recommend this game to people who like reading, crpgs, and don't mind some old school graphics.

Geneforge's central idea reminds me a great deal of playing as the conjurer from Westwood's Nox; you play a Shaper, a technomantic summoner/genetic mad scientist of sorts, who learns over time to create a variety of creatures that you can upgrade and tweak each time you summon them, allowing you to create a party of monsters to your taste. You can choose instead to lean more into fighting your own battles with a more melee or ranged combat-oriented build or rely on stealth and diplomacy to get through the game with a minimum of combat. Based on your class, some skills are cheaper or more expensive to improve, so it helps to have an idea of how you plan to play when you first start.

1)Combat is tactical and can be fun with plenty of different strategies
2)Story is REALLY good and has multiple endings
3)Monster taming is optional (you can beat the game solo if you want).
Cons:
1) the sound design is kinda bad (better than the original, but you lose nothing of value by muting the game and listening to other stuff while you play).
2)Some enemies can be a giant pain in the ass to fight (I'm looking at you pylons).
3)Leveling up at high levels is a chore because enemies will flat out stop giving experience. It doesn't matter if it's a very hard enemy, get read to get single digit exp points or even nothing at all.
4)Fire shapping monsters are very similar to one another (nearly the same skill set and the only change are the status).
Overall I think this game is a 7/10. It has a lot of good stuff and content, but it stumbles in other areas. I do recommend this game if you like tactical combat with monster taming elements.

The graphics and UI are massively improved, and the game looks and plays fantastically. Unfortunately the same cannot really be said about the music and sound effects. I wish there was more original music than just the intro title. Eventually the sounds of birds cawing in the background can get tiresome.
But, where the game truly shines is the combat and game-play, and the characters, setting, and story. I have put 50+ hours into the game and I feel like I could still give it another play-through. There are so many different factions, and even individuals, to side with, it is unreal. Having achievements in the game really improves the odds of me replaying the game for sure.
I would highly recommend this game to both old fans and new people who have never played a Spiderweb game before. I think this is one of his best games so far, the best remake of his older games, and far, far better than the new ones he has been putting out (looking at you Queen's Wish).
Still on the fence? There is a demo on his site that you can try out, so you can see if you like the game or not and actually want to buy it, without dreading that 2 hour Steam time limit.

My only minor gripes are:
- Weapon skills don't raise attack accuracy, resulting in Guardians feeling weak and unreliable early game.
- Inventory space is about 10 slots too tight, especially if you try to make use of Batons (projectile weapons).

You have either a single character or a party of characters (if you felt like making some buddies to accompany you,) you go around completing quests and murdering things & people for money, experience and equipment. You level up once you have enough Experience and gain 10 skill points to apply wherever you so desire, which is more than FF IV would let you do. The combat is all grid-based, and if you're getting curb-stomped it's likely because you aren't using your buff spells BEFORE walking into the meat-grinder folks. There are four basic ways to solve the problems arrayed before you, Stealth, Diplomacy, Mechanics and Combat. If you're lucky (or just remember the game that well,) you'll have your character built in such a way that you can combine the methods available to get some really neat things early on.
These games are both simple and complex, but how can they be both? That answer is, as one might expect, lengthy. You see, it depends on you, the player. If you're an over-achiever who lives to dig out every single secret, murder every super-boss and get that ultimate, phoenix-winged chest plate of self-revival and foe immolation (no it doesn't exist, sounds cool though don't it?) you'll find it requires having just the right skills in just the right amounts to get everyone to do exactly what you want them to like a master puppeteer. If you're Johnny McAverageguy or Sally McNormallady, you'll find that it's not so complex. The average gamer will focus on what needs to be done, get their boat and sail off into the sunset, wondering where they can get their hands on a good tropical drink...
This is a classic, it's not perfect and anyone who has played it before has no right to complain about that since they knew what they were getting into with this. Just remember folks, this is a small development team. We're not talking Square-Enix, where they could dedicate literally hundreds or thousands of people to updating and remaking a classic like they did with FF VII-R.
In the realm of sanity and realistic expectations, this game doesn't fall short of it's goal. If you enjoy a good tactical RPG with a deep, thought-provoking storyline? This here should quite nicely fill that niche. I mean seriously, how many games have you played that actively tackle the morality of slavery? O-Okay, so it's a bit more common in this day and age, but back then! Hoo-boy, that was some heavy stuff back then people. Now if you'll excuse me, I'mma grab my cane and go hunt down a good tropical drink, and if someone bothers me I'll whack them with the aforementioned accoutrement and tell'em I've gone rogue.

The game didn't change much. Graphics were updated, new models and portraits were made. Sadly, there's a big minus there. Those models which needed change the most stayed the same (e.g. drayks) and some changes were plain foolish like Goeetsh now having a female model, despite being a man (same goes for all male Sholai wizards).
Gameplay became more varied. Now your creatures have passive and active abilities, but due the the absurd amount of fighting you will still get very tired of them all. This was a problem of the original, but at least Mutagen tried to fix it.
Mutagen also offers one new quest (a big one), locations (4 or 5 in total) and characters. All of the above are connected with a new creation type.
Overall, this remake could use a bit of polish and maybe it will have it, but even if the game stays as it currently is I'd still recommend it both for newcomers and old fans. There's plenty to experience with this game and it definitely is worth the price.

This is a very nice, well-crafted update of a twenty year old game that was even considered retro back then.
It's a game that harkens back to the golden days of computer RPG's like the old gold-box AD&D and Dragonlance games. Heavy in lore, story-telling, character building, strategic turn-based grid battles, exploration, politics, and meaningful decision-making, in huge open worlds with multiple outcomes.
Spiderweb Software game series are a genre of themselves. It's a computer game, a D&D tabletop game experience, an epic interactive novel of which you're the hero or the villian. All of these things and more.
Not for those who demand eye candy and instant gratification, but a must have for those who enjoy playing a part in epic adventures across vast, open, fully realized worlds.

This game breathes new life into an absolute classic with high resolution, better interface, shortcuts, path finding, quest tracking, and more.
Create and customise your character to approach a large island filled with challenges in whatever way you see fit. Whether you build a melee specialist, a mage, or a shaper of creatures that you can command and enhance, you'll get to see a different take on the game each playthrough, choose a side, and shape the outcome of the game through your choices.
I'm so glad to see this game remastered.

You can be a crusading knight with a dragon sidekick who spews flames onto all the nonbelievers. You can also be an empathetic ally to the natives of the island and help them get their freedom as you stand up against injustice. All of that in the first 30 minutes.
The character builds are as deep and nuanced as you want them to be. A melee fighter with a ton of magic? Possible. A summoner who can fight alongside his minions? Possible. A pure mage who ignores minions AND melee? POSSIBLE! A knight who ignores silly magic and goes on a grand crusade in the name of the shapers with not but your body and sword? POSSIBLE!
I love this game, the series, and the company behind it. If I could spend more on this, I would. I only regret I didn't know of the kickstarter until it was too late.

Also, know all five original games in the series are also on Steam, or directly from the developer's website! If you like this one, check those out as well. Hopefully we'll be getting remakes of the others in future, but until then the others are still functioning on modern systems.
If you've played the original, I still recommend getting this, for enhanced compatibility with modern computers, some quality of life upgrades, more flexibility when commanding creations in combat and a few more areas to explore.
I loved this game and its unique setting when I first found it years ago, and I still love it now. This full remake updates the graphics, interface, tightens up the already excellent writing, and makes tweaks to stats and the management of your creations. Stealth now seems to be a more viable path to take through the game, with a dedicated skill rather than leaving things down to careful timing alone, and feedback on when you're risking detection. There's also a new creation to learn how to summon, and from what I recall on the Kickstarter, there's new areas to explore.

That said realize this game isn't for everyone - the gameplay is fun enough but it's really more about story and your choices in it, the atmosphere, and a world that is truly unique and special. (Definitely don't expect AAA graphics). If that's doesn't sound like you're cup of tea then just skip this one.

Combat is turn-based tactics with the added conceit that you are a Shaper, a being who *creates* their entire team. Naturally, you will form a strong bond with some of your creations and tweak their characteristics as you see fit.
The only hurdle is accepting the art direction. If you can manage that, there is an awesome role-playing experience in this game and its sequels.
In regards to the remake, I'm a few levels in and it feels better and smoother than ever.
