Introduction
Developed by Bugbear Entertainment, FlatOut is a demolition derby-style racing game featuring a sophisticated physics engine, racing and other special events.
Pros
- Graphics have aged quite well for a 2004 game.
- Really good ragdoll and damage physics.
- Decent car variety. 16 cars spread throughout 3 classes (Bronze, Silver and Gold).
- Decent track variety. Mostly the same tracks but with varying routes.
- Other whacky game modes.
- Good car sounds.
- Really good soundtrack.
Cons
- Horrible physics. Even when hitting the smallest debris the car goes flying and spins out.
- Car handling is pretty crap. The car slides way too much, spins out quite easily on tighter turns and recovery is really hard since the car keeps wanting to spin out.
- Very few car color options.
Conclusion
Overall, this is a pretty mixed game. What it does right, it does really well but what it does wrong, it does really terribly and with this being a racing game it means car handling is a really important part of it and unfortunately it failed to deliver in that area. Still I enjoyed the game more than I didn't.
If there were a neutral option, I would've chosen it.

First things first, the gameplay, presentation & physics. Even after replaying the second game and then switching to the first one, the game looks and feels great. The cars drive with a realistic weight to them, and the physics are impressive. Graphics-wise, the game is decent, the cars look good, environments - believable, and crashes - cool as always. The gameplay side has aged a bit more than the visuals, and the AI can be overly aggressive at some times, but once you upgrade the car, they begin to fall behind the player, and the challenge goes out the window. By the way, the tuning system is no NFS Underground 2, but there are enough systems to play around with, each affecting the car in different ways. Special props go for the music choice, that has always been great in the series, and FlatOut is no exception.
The game has several flaws and mechanics I didn't like, f.e., when buying a new car, the player has to sell the old one, losing all progress and upgrades. Once you finish the races in Career mode, there are classic Fallout Challenges to play around with, but I found them pretty boring. The Derby mode feels dull compared to FlatOut:2 and Ultimate Carnage, and the rest of the challenges are preference-based. I tried them out once or twice and gave up. The Multiplayer is dead, or at least I couldn't get it to work, which comes as a surprise for no one, so no comments here.
Never having played FlatOut as a kid, I approached it with zero nostalgia, and I still think it is a decent racing game to play, even in 2021. Also, it's dirt-cheap everywhere. I recommend it!

The game in many ways feels like a spiritual successor to the Destruction Derby game series released for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 and that's definitely a good thing. The game is focused on racing with your junk cars if you will on non conventional tracks. You have forest tracks, towns, snow tracks, fields, construction sites and even a few circuit style tracks. The driving is pretty fun as it really takes time to learn how to perform the sharp turns effectively and crashing into things gives you boost in your boost meter. However what FlatOut is most known for is the ragdoll physics with the drivers as if you crash hard enough your driver goes flying out of the windshield, forcing you to reset your vehicle. This can also be done to opponents making it really good as a mechanic. Speaking of resetting, if you veer too far off course you'll be prompted to reset which resets your vehicle back on the track and let's you get back into the thick of the race, this is helpful as sometimes it can be hard not to go off course.
Career mode is also pretty good here, Career Mode involves starting small in the bronze class and using the cars and trying to win all the races in the class to advance to silver and eventually gold. Along the way you can do some tuning to your car and in FlatOut tuning is handled well. You get money from winning races or competing in bonus events (I'll get to these later) and it can be spent on a new car or buying upgrades for your existing car, buying these definitely helps your odds in the bonus modes as well as races. The only issue is you can only own 1 car and when you select the paint job that's the one you get, so if you want to change it you'll have to buy that car again and this means losing all of your upgrades so be aware.
Now as for the Bonus events, this is where most of the fun imo comes from in FlatOut. Bonus events are unlocked as you progress through, they consist of 12 events. 3 Destruction Derbies exist which has you outlasting other cars to survive, you are also challenged to beat it in a fast time. The other mode is 3 super mud bowl competitions, mud bowl has you racing on small more circular like tracks and there's 8 laps, this can get hectic fast and they are a fun event. Now lastly we have the hotseat grand slam stadium events. These events involve launching your driver out of the windshield with the turbo button to do a certain objective. These range from Long Jump which have you trying to go the longest distance, High Jump which has you trying to launch your driver the highest you can, Darts which has you well playing Darts with your character as the dart, bullseye which has you trying to land close to the center, bowling which is self-explanatory and lastly the clown which is the most unique. In the Clown event you must hit a piece of the clown and each piece is worth a certain amount of money (as shown in the rules when you load into the event) and you want to get the most you can, whatever amount you make here is given to you in the career mode making it the best way to earn money. In all other events you earn money based on how well you did whether it be placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in Mud Bowl, getting a certain time in the derbies or getting a certain score in the events. Hotseat really adds to the game's replayability and has hours of fun, especially when playing with others.
Lastly I want to mention the visuals and music. The visuals for 2004 are quite good, they certainly aren't the best as games like Burnout 3: Takedown looked way better but the cars are nice and the environments feel very much alive. Music is also good as they got a bunch of B bands to make songs and tbh the songs really fit the game's tone and it wouldn't be the same without it.
So overall FlatOut is a really good and fun game that I highly recommend. I played this game a lot in my childhood and it still holds a place in my heart, I think if you're looking for a more arcade like racing game or a game that'll be fun to kill a few hours than this is the game I would recommend, it goes pretty cheap on sale so pick it up when you can.

It's such a fun game. The driving feels nice. The cars look cool. The soundtrack is pretty good. It's also not a game that's just super easy which is good as it keeps it from being boring.
Something interesting or weird about the game is when you connect a controller and look at the control configuration screen. The throttle and turning are on the same stick. I recommend mapping the throttle and brake to the triggers, which the game calls the z-axis. Also, the menu won't say what the buttons on the controller are, it just lists them as button followed a number. So you'll have to figure out which button is which.
I do wish that when buying a car in game after you already have one, the game would give you an option to keep the old car so you could switch to it.
I absolutely recommend FlatOut. Especially if you can get it on sale - might be the best thing I've bought with $1.50.

You know, I have that feeling that I'm trying to tell some eulogy about some guy that I barely knew, but he was good to me in those rare moments I've seen him. Unfortunately, we're in the 2021 year now, and I'm usually writing about old games like how they are now, rather than how they were in those days of old.
So, Flatout is still playable, and quite cheap, and on the field of comparisons with modern indie games of similar price/quality rate, it is still ok. Not bad. There are some nice tracks where you can drive some derby cars, listening to some 'alternative rock' music of the '00s Nothing really special, but provides a proper mood for action-driving.
However, I doubt that I reinstall it again. Driving games have gone ahead a lot both in terms of a variety of gaming experiences, and purely technical, in terms of visuals and special effects. Multiplayer has not been supported for a long time, plus Flatout personally does not cause me much nostalgia. It's not bad, but no more than that.
There is (and was) nothing really outstanding or really a breakthrough, even when the game was released in 2003-2004. The physics of the movement of cars and collisions, personally, rather even annoys me. Not enough to give the game a minus, but still not very good. Plus that irritating system of car upgrades, where you need to go all over the list, ever and ever again, which is certainly bad.
Overall rating (at the given moment) - 5.5 windshields broken with ragdoll head out of 10 crushes.

FlatOut is destruction racing to the very core, throwing aside any superfluous story elements or anything similarly goofy for the sake of just making a pure arcade racer. When you first boot up the game, you're offered a career mode, a quick race, a time trial mode, and multiplayer. Career is where you'll spend much of your offline time and where you'll buy your first car. Initially, you're presented with a few decidedly slower vehicles, but as you move through the career mode, new classes will unlock and each one will get progressively faster. Plus, you can buy tune-ups for each ride that improve speed, horsepower, traction, braking, and all the other usual upgradable stats you'd find in a racing game. The career mode is really just a long series of races within different circuits: bronze, silver, and gold. You don't even necessarily have to win each and every race to unlock the next circuit, but you do have to place at least third in all of them to make sure you earn a medal. Placing higher will earn you more cash, which you can subsequently use to buy more tune-ups and cars, but you can usually earn enough money just by earning a medal. While this way of doing things does shorten the experience a bit (not having to win every single race), there are nearly 40 races in all, so there's always the bonus races to keep you busy.
The bonus races are effectively a collection of straight-up destruction derbies, races on tracks that seem specifically geared toward maximum destruction (for example, a figure-eight course), and a bunch of minigames that make specific use of FlatOut's biggest gimmick: the ability to launch the driver of your car out of the front windshield. This acts as a sort of pseudo punishment in normal races when you wreck too hard (as it takes a few extra seconds to let your car reset back on track), but in the minigames, you're presented with either a gigantic dart board, a high-jump meter, a set of bowling pins, or something along those lines, and a track with which to drive your car up. By pressing a button right before the end of the track, you can set the angle of the driver's launch, and then once you let go, he or she will go flying from the windshield toward the awaiting pins, boards, or what have you. What makes these games so entertaining is the ridiculous rag-doll physics Bugbear has given your drivers, making them contort in horrifically hilarious ways that never fail to make you cringe, even if just a bit. With that said, the minigames do have a limited life span of entertainment, as once you've broken all the records, you can really only watch your helpless driver shatter every bone in his or her body so many times before it becomes a tad repetitive (which is not something we ever thought we'd find ourselves saying, but it's true).
The actual driving mechanics of FlatOut aren't terribly complex or deep, and they rely pretty heavily on lots of powersliding and crazy smashups for entertainment value, rather than on any real racing strategy to speak of. Fortunately, it works...at least, it works well enough. The faster cars in the game can get up to some pretty crazy speeds, and the handling of the cars, though very loose, is pretty manageable once you get used to it. The whole thing of launching your driver out of the car does get old, as we've said previously, but it only happens during the most brutal wrecks. With the punishment of losing precious time by inadvertently sending your driver flying to his doom will be constantly hanging over your head, you might find yourself being a little overly cautious when taking sharp turns. But, you shouldn't be afraid to rub against the scenery or other cars--after all, rubbin' is racin'. Plus, FlatOut's racing model awards you a degree of boost for smashing up the scenery and your opponents. It might seem somewhat counterintuitive to be rewarded for breaking your car, but only the most severe wrecks really incapacitate you, and frankly, considering how great the wrecks in this game look, it's hard to not want to do it.
Everything in FlatOut breaks apart. Cars deform to a spectacular degree, bodies scrunch up bit by bit with each progressive wreck, bumpers sheer off, and sparks fly every which way. Tracks are similarly destructible. You can smash through big wooden signs, send stacks of tires and nearby barriers flying, and leave big chunks of the scenery all over the track to become dangerous obstacles for the next lap. Actually, if there's any one complaint to be lobbied at the level destructibility, it's that some of the debris can be pretty easily driven over the next time around with little consequence. Most often it will be the smaller stuff that you can drive over, but you will encounter some sizable pieces of junk that you'll definitely want to avoid.
It would have been nice if there had been more variety in track design and car design in FlatOut. For sure, this is a great-looking game with some excellent car models and track environments, but there just aren't enough of them. Most cars handle exactly the same, and though there are a few notable differences in aesthetic design, there aren't any truly outlandish vehicles to play around with. There are really only five or six different racing environments, with multiple track layouts for each (some of which really just feel like previous tracks in reverse).
Since FlatOut was developed in Europe, it's not altogether surprising that the soundtrack comes from a lot of artists that North American players might not have ever heard of. What is kind of odd is that all the bands that have been culled together for this game all sound like they're trying to do their best impersonation of generic American alternative rock. A few of the tunes are legitimately catchy, but for the most part, they just kind of fade into the background as you play. The rest of the sound effects are all quite good, though not any better than most other competent racers on the market.
FlatOut would be a whole lot easier to recommend if certain aspects of its package were tightened up. The merely mediocre artificial intelligence and the repetitive driver-launching mechanic are probably going to annoy the hell out of some people. But if you can look past some of these flaws, the game's delightfully unscripted core racing mechanics can be a lot of fun. As it is, it's a very good game that falls just shy of greatness, and serious demolition racing fans would do well to check it out.

Pros - The game looks Very Good considering its age, it looks Amazing graphically to this day, physics are superb, probably the reason why you should play the game to begin with, car models also look fantastic and are destructible to a certain degree (like losing a lot of parts and having the engine on fire, also if you hit something with the car your character gets catapulted through the windshield), and if the car gets damaged enough it starts wobbling and the handling is affected (which is Awesome). As a racing game the handling is one of the most important aspects of the game and they nailed it, it drives like it should, accompanied with some great track designs and a simple but good progression system. The game also offers a campaign mode as per usual with a number of modes solely for the player to have FUN (which is again great), like hitting bowling pins as the driver with ragdoll physics, or hitting a bulls eye, see how far u can throw yourself or how high you can send the driver flying, etc.
Cons - The game has great track designs BUT lacks the sence of speed ruined but HOW MANY corners every race track has, there isn't a simgle race track that encourages SPEED (Example - The Hayville Farmdash Track). Some of the tracks designs are lazy as F*ck, like having a race mirrored ... WOW ! And we have AGAIN another double edged sword, the game has amazing physics BUT they are WAY to sensitive, a light touch on the side of the car and the dude gets catapulted through the windshield, another slight touch in the back of the car and the dude gets catapulted through the windshield, it's super annoying, probably the worst part in the game. To finish it off the game has rubber banding which is kinda expected so it ain't a big deal, allthough this one is, the game has an awfull respawn point, unless your car touches the ground or the dude that was sent flying is touching the ground you CAN'T RESPAWN, like wtf ? It's dumb.
In Conclusion the game has flaws but is overall great, even by today's standarts, it holds up pretty well if I might say so myself.
Final Verdict an 80% out of 100%.

-vehicle damage model very good for the time
-Music
-Damage Ai's cars, or even smash them through their windshield :D
Cons
-Ai dont take shortcuts
-AI seem to be able to take corners with ease at full speed, while the player has to slow down.
-Weird fov depending on resolution (i realise 5:4 aspect ratios were common at this time)
-Cars Love to drift, its like driving on ice at times (this can be remedied with the classic A+D wiggle)
Summery
A really enjoyable stock car arcade racing game, mixed with stunt events, created in 2005 this game is very impressive both
in the graphics which are very crisp, (the textures less so), and the damage models and handling.
it's pretty unique as the track changes throughout each lap, letting the player choose to destroy bits of the track and enemy vehicles to create obstacles for
other opponents to crash into, doing this can slow your vehicle down (clearly) but also rewards the player with boost (Nos) which i usually save for corners to boost around.
Think of this game as a very basic 'Wreckfest' the 1st of it's kind, and a classic which i spent 100+ hours on, on the psp version of a later title in the series (though the name escapes me)
I would highly recommend this or Flatout 2, (the ones ive played) very re-playable, and customisation, while limiting is present.
It achieves what it sets out to do.
Regarding Fov/Higher resolutions,
This can be fixed via a custom patch which can be found On PCGAMERWIKI/Flatout

Linux/Proton compatibility : perfect. No issues whatsoever on Intel graphics through full playthrough.
Played full game from start to finish. Overall a good game. Graphics and physics still holds up surprisingly well today. This game went places physics-wise where even many modern games are still afraid to go. The problem is this game is confused about its identity.. It tries to be too realistic for an arcade game (any racing game in which you can drive a car whose engine is literally on fire is an arcade game) and winds up being neither fun nor realistic. Cars have a retarded torque curve, and handle like boats. For all the emphasis on crashing, the chaotic environment and physics only allows for a very conservative driving style. Simcades like Gran Turismo encourage more dirtier gameplay than this, The result is the game often can be more frustrating than fun. Still its satisfying when you win.
Tips : The controller support is meant for analog sticks. if you are using a d-pad, better to bind it to keyboard otherwise the sensitivity might be too much for some. Game can be got for dirt cheap on sale.

FlatOut is a solid racing game that goes for more of an arcade feel than many modern racing games. You are meant to crash into each other throughout the race, rather than focusing on your optimal turn lines. It ends up being some good, casual fun that will appeal to many players. FlatOut isn't the best arcade racing game, but it is easily one of the better ones available on steam. The races are generally satisfying and should go over well with most arcade racing fans. Overall, a solid game with a deserved spot near the top of its genre.

But i have NO IDEA why couldn't a god damn programmer find out how to cycle the songs in the middle of a race. The songs aren't too bad and the races aren't too long but when the song ends it starts up again the very same instead of picking a new one. Its so bizarre, even games from the previous generation didn't had this issue.

I first played this game on the PlayStation 2, and this reignited my love for racing games back then. The only big racers I had at that time on the PS2 were Gran Turismo 4, Need for Speed Underground, and Crash Nitro Karts. This game defied those games in such a wonderful way, as it favored dirty racing tactics and chaos over what you would do in those games. This game was the reason I started getting into off road games, and back into racing as a whole because all I played at the time was stuff like Gauntlet or Max Payne 2.
Pros
+Demolition derbies, dirt track racing, on track racing, ragdoll sports. This game has a little bit of everything.
+Prop physics and the ability to earn in game $ from crushing anything that moves.
+Ragdoll sports are fun, high jump, long jump, bowling and more. All done with the players body.
+Awesome indie soundtrack, all rock and metal.
+Career mode, featuring 3 classes and 16 cars with performance upgrades available.
+No need to spend in game $ to repair the vehicle. Perfect condition at the start of every event.
Neutrals
~Online community is almost dead. Its a shame, because playing this game online was a blast when it came out.
~Small mod scene, which is almost gone now. FlatOut Joint was the place I obtained my mods for the games.
~FlatOut 2 does *almost* everything this game does, but much better. I say *almost* because you can't go off track to explore or earn smash bonuses in vanilla FlatOut 2.
Cons
-Sound. The way the sound mixes during races can overdrive most speakers and headphones at %50 volume. Opponent cars are deafening compared to your own, even though the camera used the majority of the time is DIRECTLY BEHIND your straight piped demolition racer.
-Music. The way the music is played is annoying. THE TRACKS DO NOT CHANGE DURING A RACE! That might not sound too bad, considering a race can last around 5 minutes. But if you go off track to destroy stuff for a solid 15 or so minutes, you will hear the same song loop the entire time.
-Car control. The driving does two things wrong. The game lets off the accelerator during slides and air time. That doesn't sound too bad, because you would think there would be an option to turn that off, right? WRONG, and it really annoys me that I can't power slide without losing all forward momentum or land and spray a huge load of dirt/smoke at anyone behind me. This comes into play with the next con...
-Car damage related to the suspension. So, in this game the only way to total out the car is to play any of the demolition derby event in the Special part of career, or in a single/multi player instance. However, you can still 'total' your car during every other mode, and it greatly affects your handling. If you smash your car up enough, THE SHOCK ABSORBERS IN THE ENTIRE CAR JUST BREAK AND CAUSE THE CAR TO BOUNCE LIKE ITS DRIVING ON A BOUNCY BALL!!! That is pretty good inscentive to not screw your car up, right? So why am I complaining? Well, if you screw up your car in late game, and it starts bouncing, you can't accelerate enough to keep up with the opponents due to how the game handles the above mentioned con. So, that was a bad idea.
Even through those pretty glaring issues, this game still holds as a solid derby style car game. This doesn't require any special workarounds to get running on Windows 10 even though it is an old game. So you can buy it and play it right away. Supports controllers, though it is a bit weird to get working. The keyboard controls still work during menu and play, so its mitigated enough. Even though this is one of my All Time favorites, I can't recommend it to players new to the demolition derby subgenre of racing games. FlatOut 2 does *almost* everything better, with more action, better graphics, better sound management, better controls, and more events. If you are a Bugbear fan, or a hardcore fan of derby games, buy this and you won't be disappointed.

Review
The first FlatOut is coincidentally also my entry point in this franchise of explosive muscle car racing goodness. At the time of writing this review it is also the only game in the franchise that I have played. And as a first game.. it was pretty good. I had a blast playing through this with many fun moments, especially making the lives of my enemy a living hell by driving them into trees or other obstacles. The drifting took some getting used to (Ice Physics in a racing game wut), but overall I had no trouble beating the main campaign. I did however have personal issues, which mostly comes down to FlatOut being a bit inconsistent. This came down to but not limited to shortcuts. Sometimes I just moved slightly to the left of a track and was immediately branded as off-track, having to reset to an earlier point in the lap. On the other hand, sometimes I could just drive through trees far gone from the track but it happened to actually function as a shortcut. Due to that I was hesitant on trying out shortcuts because they would either be the greatest shortcut ever, or I would go off-track and perhaps even lose my chance of winning the race. Another inconsistent part if how your car would suddenly turn around or even be completely immobile after hitting an obstacle or debris. Debris usually spreads all over the road if you or an enemy drive into them, and they can be a pretty big hindrance to you. I had multiple times when I drove near or over them, just for my car to completely spin around and me having trouble getting back on speed. Both of the inconsistencies did lead to some frustration which is a shame, because other than that I really did have fun with the game. The bonus mode especially was a ton of fun to do, special credit going to the Destruction Derby-esque minigame. I wish there were slightly more modes, since one of the modes is a quick race which is just the regular campaign mode.. without the campaign. I would have liked a sandbox mode or anything because despite there technically only be 5 lands with a good amount of maps in them, they would be fun to drive around with without a worry in the world. Overall FlatOut was a fun game to experience and definitely has me interested in the other FlatOut games. The original FlatOut does show its age, but if future games do improve on my issues, I'm in for a fun ride!

At first I chose a car that had a good power/weight ratio, but they killed me so much. you might want to choose the heaviest one!
