The combat is decent for an oldschool turnbased JRPG, but compared to modern stuff it's not the greatest. It is plagued by the meme level summon animations, some of which take over a minute, just to watch the animation play out and you do nothing, and you use these many times... It's terrible, lol. There are absolutely horrendous achievements in the game, for the cheevo hunters. That said, it's totally doable, involves fun side quests, and I think the worst one can be automated even.
As a port, it's incredibly badly done, and you're probably better off buying the remastered version (also on Steam). However, if you get this one, you can use the Steam controller configuration tool in Steam to get a controller working (because the devs actually released a full game without proper controller support, so controllers often do nothing... what is wrong with them?). I have made an XBox 360 controller profile, I put it in the community, and it works great. No need to get get XPadder or anything.
All that bad things about the game, the port, and Steam achievements aside, this is still a masterpiece of a game. The story is completely crazy, and I fell in love with the characters and their development. This fits the typical Final Fantasy trope, where the story gets entirely out of hand and out of this world.
If you've played other FF games and liked them, you will definitely like this game.
If you've never played an FF game, this is probably a pretty good entrance to the series, if you don't mind older graphics and play styles, because the story will draw you in.

I have beat it on PS1 many times , but sadly on the PC it does act weird. I would just assume because it is an older game.
I love the story and characters 100% if you are fan of FF games please play this if you have not.

VII has full controller support.
IX has full controller support.
X/X2 have full controller support.
XII has full controller support.
You get the picture. Even though the store page states it's got spport, the port was broken and I can't seem to play it as comfortably as the other FF games here. So far, all I know is that I need to download third-party software in order to do that. This has tainted my interest in the game, especially because the remaster is so full of issues as well.
VIII used to be my least favorite on the PS1 and it remains a hassle to this day, just with different stones in the way,

the remaster is even worse. yes, worse.
on a positive note: this is the only version of the game that includes the chocobo mini game. you can use this mini rpg to get very rare items, for example a ribbon which was not part of the main game but can now be imported.

Overland map is one of the worst I have ever seen
Combat balance is gone, GF rule everything that regular attacks are useless
Way to easy to miss important items, like weapons upgrades. Unless you are playing with a strategy guide you will be completely lost.
If you level too fast, random mosters will become as tough as bosses
Pros
innovative ability system but also requires a ton of micromanagement (also a con)
some animation scenes look ok.
In the end if you want to play a really frustrating game that probably had a 1/4 the budget of FF7, then play this.

In terms of the game itself, this is definitely a bottom 3 game in the Final Fantasy series for me. The story often twists and turns without any reason why or explanation for the changes and I mostly dislike the combat system with the importance on cards, GFs, amongst other things but I still enjoy playing all Final Fantasy games and still ultimately recommend this version of Final Fantasy VIII if you are trying to play through the series similar to me.
Enjoy!

I enjoyed this FF. Rinoa has a dog and he is powerful. A certain dimension-travelling FF character is in it that is the whole reason I played this game (I'm a big FFV fan)
The story is romance-focused. It's a cute romance that'll make you soft. It made me cry at one point. The villains were cool. Squall has an interesting character arc that's different from Cloud's, so even though they're similar their motivations and origins and growth happen entirely differently. The whole cast is memorable and make me happy. Seifer needs to be put in time out. I think he's a neat villain that should be put in time out. Final boss and everything surrounding the final dungeon is super cool. Satisfying ending. I think all the child soldiers (basically the whole cast) should get therapy though.
GF and draw system are pretty satisfying once you figure out how it works. Just put the strong magic on your stats, it makes the number go up. I maxed out Squall's HP and Rinoa's magic stat, and it gives me much serotonin. The gameplay is weirdly balanced and really unique but once you figure it out you can break it. Or choose not to, for a challenge. The final boss was challenging regardless of level. And I did ultima weapon, that was a fun challenge. The final boss was harder than final boss of FF7 imo (though I did change things up for minor challenges). Gameplay is weirdly addictive even though I'm not a big fan? I did put 60 hours into this game (more than 7 or 5 or 15, and 14 doesn't count it's an MMO and they have too much content, and I haven't played any others)
Level scaling system annoyed me so much I grinded out 3 characters to level 100 (and the other 3 to 80) and that's why my play time is so high. It took like 5 hours. I did this because squall was level 60 and everyone else was level 30 and the level gap annoyed me. No gameplay issues, it just annoyed me because the numbers were different.
The achievements for this one suck. Who in their right mind would grind out 10,000 enemies (I beat the game with only about 800 defeated, even with grinding). Go buy remastered. I heard remaster had lag issues so I bought this one since it's cheaper anyway but it still lagged when GFs did big attacks.
TL;DR:
The story is nice, the characters are great, the villains are pretty cool, the gameplay is weird but fun, and Rinoa has a dog.
A solid 8/10, but you should get remastered

With that out of the way though, or should you lack any of those systems / they finally took down the stores for them, this is the version of FF8 on steam I recommend you buy, as with mods it's capable of providing nearly the same experience as the better PS1 version.
Beyond all the mumbo jumbo about version and mods though, Final Fantasy 8 is one of the underdogs of the Final Fantasy series, and it earns that place by having a somewhat pointless combat system that exists as an oxymoron. You grind spells so you can become more powerful so you can grind spells, but then you're getting more powerful so you an grind spells so you can become more powerful. Most of what makes FF8 worth playing is the story, which does a very bad job of both engaging the player through meaningful characters, and also simply allowing the character to understand what is even happening.
It's entirely possible to enjoy FF8 if you don't think about it too much, but most of the game is carried by its music, art, and some specific scenes that I can't go into for the sake of spoilers. The combat is something that you either enjoy the entire time, or get sick of very early, and the characters never really evolve past their starting tropes.
I would recommend you try to play through FF8, but understand that you're likely not going to enjoy the game unless you can bury yourself in its universe and focus more on the events of the world rather than the party.

It has a strong story, interesting and deep characters, and also a large colorful world to explore, a great junction system to power you up, and a scaling system which keeps the game at a somewhat difficult level.
Battles are fun and engaging and the card game is incredibly fun and addictive to play (gotta-get-em-all.)
Yes, is old, but everybody who loves RPG games will without doubt love this game.

-Unlikable wooden protagonist which leads to terrible character interactions and dialogue which you have to put up 40 hours with it they try to justify why squall the way is towards late game but at that point you don't care
-Unreliable mechanics Draw and Junction system is unnecessary and bad
-Junction system is the method of growth to leveling up or weapon upgrading you have to draw to get stronger also draw to have magic and macig works like ammo its limited so you can and will run out of it if you want to refill it you have to find a draw points or enemies with that magic
Hope you like to DRAW otherwise you can't take advantage of the Junction system which means you can't get stronger and have limited combat and customization options
I didn't think it was possible to ruin a turn based rpg but I was wrong

After many, many years, I've finally managed to sit down and play from start to finish Final Fantasy VIII.
FYI, Final Fantasy VII is my favorite one (also one of my favorite games ever), So I was pretty interested to play the others too.
So To keep this short, While I did find the story and characters not that interesting (Which is a bummer, especially for an RPG), It is still a pretty solid RPG. The Junction System is different that's for sure, and while I did not necessarily like it (It's pretty broken), I guess it was refreshing. What I for sure didn't like at all is the fact the enemies Level up with you. That's a stupid-ass design for an RPG.
Final Fantasy VIII Is not perfect at all, and in my opinion, doesn't even come close to FF7, but it is still a pretty nice RPG that I guess I can recommend. If You're just getting into the Final Fantasy Series, I'd Recommend starting with Final Fantasy VI or Final Fantasy VII.

I believe that it is the same with a lot of other gamers, the first one you play, it stays with you forever, because it opens up the world to one of the best series ever.
Other titles are brilliant as well, but as i said the first one always stays with you :)
I don't know if this review is any good, but i just wanted to show my appreciation for this game :D
Thank you :)

Seeing a little text note pop in at the top to alert me that whatever's updated to sync with the server *every single time I draw magic* might be the single worst, most pointlessly, needlessly irksome move I can recall seeing done in a long, long time to something.
I can live with the inexplicably terrible other aspects of the port. Old game, whatever, I deal.
But this is a new ~feature~ that makes so little sense it staggers. Actively preventing a player from anything resembling getting lost in the damn game is a strange, stupid move, and I expect so little from square, yet it was still somehow, too much.
Deeply bummed.
(And I'll gladly eat my words if there's a way to circumvent this)
25hrs in:
Steam really, really wanted me to revise this, since I kept playing.
Words uneaten. There *is* a way to get about this, irt to endless draw clutter, though, but it's less an around than a grind-through; still a deeply uncool move by Squeenix, kings of crappy moves.
In case I'm unclear: it is indeed an achievement, just drawdrawdraw (possibly per each character? It sure seemed like more than 100 spells per member, but perhaps it was the first to hit 100 *shruggie*) til your eyes bleed on some hapless forgettable mob to make sure it doesn't bother you when you actually care about what's going on.
The other big note: there was a murder committed and it was Nobuo Uematsus soundcraft. In the reviews, someone else has linked to some better files, go get them. This port is a crimescene to FF8's beautiful music.
Get the video files too. There's no excuse for this Squeenix. None.
Happy, Steam? tldr: FF8 good. FF8 *excellent*, and maybe worth the suffering, ymmv, bc this port.. it's still FF8 despite their efforts, is about the nicest thing I can say.

Welcome to my review of final fantasy 8. This is the original version, not the remake. I will play that at a later time, when i feel like i want to play this game again. The story revolves around Squall, the main character, and Seifer. There are some twists and turns in the story, but it is basically fight the bad guy and save the world. If you like other games in this series, you may like this game too.
PROS:
- Interesting storyline.
- Time traveling between minds.
- The junction system is very versatile. It lets you manually set magic spells you draw and equip them.
- Finding all the Guardians (Espers).
- Secret side quests and chocobos.
CONS:
- The pc controller you use will not let you use the D-pad. Be aware there is only partial controller support on this version of the game.
- I honestly did not like some of the card rules, like random, and different. Although some probably enjoy it, i personally found them to be annoying.
- I experienced some technical issues, mainly lag and freezing. These were only temporary, but i found them quite annoying especially when i was fighting in a boss battle.
For technical sake, i suggest the remake version because it is more compatible with newer pc's. This version is the older version. If you are going to buy this game, be aware most people who bought this was before the remake was made, or people who bought it for nostalgia sake. Again, i recommend only getting the newer version. If you really want this edition, understand the technical limitations about lagging i mention above. I do recommend this version for only hard core final fantasy fans, but if you have a choice, buy the remake newer version.

You're better off emulating the original game than buying this.
Don't even mention this game around Square. They'll 'remaster' it again and somehow make it even worse.
All the while clutching their Cloud body pillow and bawling their eyes out because he isn't getting 100% of the fans' attention at any given moment.
To point out a few problems:
-Keyboard controls are just barely usable, while gamepad support is nearly nonexistent. Enjoy hunting for the right button when the game expects you to know what B9 is, because these generic prompts are all you get.
-Somehow this version manages to look even worse than it did on Playstation. Plenty of skybox boundaries, muddy textures and grid lines visible everywhere.
- Uses the objectively worse midi SFX and music from the old PC version. Again, worse than Ps1.
And I suppose a few positives could be pointed out as well.
- More interface and gameplay options (Game speed, cursor memory, etc) than previous versions.
- The disc cannot be scratched because there is no disc.
...that's about all the positives I can think to point out.
Square honestly doesn't deserve to be paid for this, but they're too busy rimming Cloud to care.
Really just a reprehensible way to treat a beloved classic.

- The main attraction from the remastered are the upgraded models, but in the standard FF8 you have a great modding community that has already taken care of that and other problems, there are many total conversion mods that will help you fix the old blocky models, there is even a mod to fix the midi music and change it to the original PSX version. So it's up to you if you prefer a game that is ready from the get go or you like modding your games to your taste, but remember, the remastered is charging you extra for that readiness.
- This one has Chocobo World, a legendary mini-game, designed for the PocketStation (that was released exclusively in Japan), that gives you broken items, in the remastered this mini-game was removed and the exclusive items now have to be obtained via one of the characters abilities, making them harder to farm.
- Both this version and the remastered come with in-game cheats or boosters that you can activate at will, but in the remastered achievements will be deactivated if you use them, in the standard version that won't happen. Imagine someone gives you free food and when you are eating it, that person comes and says it wasn't really free and punch you in the face. You shouldn't be punished if you want to play a single player game your own way.
- Talking about achievements, the remastered comes with fewer of them, if that is good or bad depends on you.
- Even if the previous points were obviously one-sided in favor of the standard version, I believe this one will make you take the final decision: The standard version has DRM, pretty stupid from a game with more than 20 years, the first thing you have to do before you play this game is to make a SquareEnix account, so if you buy the game and their servers are down, you are screwed, you can not play a single player game, and they have refused to fix it since the steam release in 2013, and at this point I don't think they ever will.

Story is basically about child soldiers and the contrast between the maladjusted Squall and the normally adjusted Laguna who only became a soldier as an adult. Most of the crew have their own problems stemming from parental abandonment due to a global war, and from early drafting as mercenaries.
They spend the entire game running around, discovering a secluded nation, and kill someone from the far-flung future who likes the letter K a bit too much. The best part of the game is playing Cards, and the worst part of the game is getting 10,000 kills. Playing through normally (without going for speed or keeping Squall at level 7 for the achievement) will net you about 2000-odd kills, so you're forced to spend 20 hours mindlessly killing Cactuars on Cactuar Island.
Just play through the game normally once, and maybe try a low-level run if you like how the game lets you style on the bosses by exploiting Card Mod, then pretend the 10,000 kill achievement doesn't exist.

But this release suffers from a nasty case of DRM Disorder. This is the exact same as the original PC release that was released way back in 1999, and unlike the Remaster, it includes the incredibly abusable Chocobo World system if you so desire. However, to access these, you now need to go through SE's wonderful launcher. The primary purpose of this launcher is to contact the DRM servers at Square Enix to get permission to actually launch the game that you clearly already paid for because it's in your Steam Library.
As of writing this review, these DRM servers have been down for about 2 full days. Given that this is late April 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdown, this could last for quite a while. This is an old game that is not generating massive revenue anymore, it's not being updated in any way, and since this version is exclusively distributed by Steam, it would be difficult to pirate anyway.
I Definitely recommend playing FF8, and I recommend the non-remastered PC version to completionists for the ability to use Chocobo World to access items that are *MUCH* more difficult to get in the Remaster. However, with the DRM, I recommend you take a look around places like Amazon and Ebay and track down a physical copy of the original PC release instead of this one. They can't take that away from you by breaking their DRM servers or shutting them off permanently and forgetting to release an unlock patch.
Edit: the DRM servers have been brought back online; it seems SE heard the screaming. I still recommend tracking down the physical copy if you can.
