Overall, it's a quite simple game. There's just a difficulty leap somewhere around after the first half of the game, so you better get ready to level up accordingly to counterbalance it.

TL;DR
Final Fantasy III does hold up surprisingly well. While this version of the game is inferior in many aspects to the Pixel Remaster, it remains playable and even has some strong points.
Should I Play Final Fantasy III? (for newcomers)
Do you want to experience the roots of the Final Fantasy series, or do you want some classical JRPG action without the modern anime aesthetic?
If that is the case:
Final Fantasy III is a good choice, although not the best one. Final Fantasy V took many elements that Final Fantasy III has established, and improved massively upon them. Making FFV almost objectively the better game, but FF3 has some NES charm that can not be understated, and even carries into the 3D remake.
Final Fantasy III is Fun
Nothing about FF3 is original nowadays, but it is the whole package of classical RPGs that FF3 provides. Most of the game is a great relaxing background activity and holds up so well. FF3 provides relatively short episodic scenarios, requiring the player's intervention to clear the overarching story.
FF3 is a pleasure to play through and infinitely better than FF2. I do think that FF1 still holds up better as it is just easier to play through and has a more coherent experience, but FF3 was by far the most ambitious of the NES trilogy, because of the job system.
While some jobs become obsolete, there is a decent challenge in trying new combinations, sometimes even for entire runs (Although I would not recommend it, FFV is also better in that regard).
There is honestly not much to say about FF3. It is a pretty basic turn-based JRPG before anime and Final Fantasy approximated each other.
Differences Between Versions
A great video, if you do not want to read anymore.
So you have decided that you still want to play Final Fantasy III. This is understandable, but which version should you pick?
DS, Phone, PC, or the Pixel Remaster?
It is a trick question. The DS, phone, and PC versions are in terms of content identical. That makes it only about graphics and user input.
If you are not even interested in that, the question remains:
Pixel Remaster or 3D remake?
The Pixel Remaster is a somewhat dumbed-down version as the 3D remakes for Final Fantasy III and IV are notoriously harder than their SNES counterparts. If you are seeking a challenge, the 3D remake does provide it. I have to warn you though:
FF3 is also notorious for its final dungeon. Up until then, it's relatively smooth sailing. Most content in FF3 is clearable without risking a headache, and grinding stays minimalistic.
But the final dungeon is when this gets thrown out the window, and your hands become sweaty as you are probably risking multiple hours of progress and many levels as well as loot.
The Pixel Remaster is smooth sailing all around and tries to be more faithful gameplay-wise. I think the balance-related changes from the 3D remake are awesome, but the elephant in the room needs to be addressed:
The 3D remake is too slow.
Changing equipment, the victory screen, the battle animations:
Everything takes too long. And in a moment of utter degeneration Square Enix made this much worse. Changing a job (a regular act in FF3), makes the character weaker for up to ten battles. There was no reason for this change, and it sucks.
It did not need to be like this. Square Enix did not fix the port in that regard.
The Pixel Remaster is faster and has a better user experience all around.
Even the music in the remake is better, and discussion about the art style is about pure preference.
In short:
There are not many benefits to this version if you ignore the superficial characterization of the characters in the 3D remake. There is only one saving grace:
Additional content. Well, if it was good.
FF3 has, without exaggeration, the worst additional content of any Final Fantasy remake. The Iron Giant is contained within a minuscule dungeon, needs hours of grind to be beatable, and is not even fun to fight.
Last but not least, FF3 3D remake has the most time-intensive achievement in FF history:
Jack of All Trades
I spare you the specifics, but it requires leveling every job of every character to level 99. Reaching 100% in this version is magnitudes harder than obtaining 100% in the Pixel Remaster. It is a badge of honor and also madness. I do not recommend it if you are not looking for bragging rights.
It broke me.
To be honest:
If you are not in it for the challenge or to claim you obtained 100% in the hardest version of FF3, play through the Pixel Remaster.
Conclusion
I like FF3. It is a decent game. But do not play this version of FF3, if you are not in it for the bragging rights. The 3D remake of the game needs QOL changes which Square Enix will never provide. Settle for the Pixel Remaster and enjoy the experience. I beg you.

Final Fantasy III generally struggles from having too many classes/jobs and if you aren't aiming to 100% the achievements for this game, there really isn't a reason to play them all. Which means that a large section of the game that was developed is relatively useless and this applies to the Pixel Remaster and 3D version of the game. Beyond the useless classes/jobs the story can be rather basic but through the lens of a 1990 release (and 2011 re-release) you have some appreciation for the advancements made especially in comparison to Final Fantasy I and II.
If you are a hardcore Final Fantasy fan, this game is worth playing. If you are just trying to get in the series or genre I would recommend the Pixel Remaster version. Either way, you won't regret your decision!

The job system and leveling from the first game are back (thankfully) and working better than ever. There's about 4 or 5 times the amount of jobs from the original and the game is much better for it. There's an insane amount of combinations you can do with your party to make sure you have exactly what you need whenever you want. The only downside to this is that the game places a penalty of up to 10 battles (!) on any characters that switch jobs so switching often feels pretty discouraged to me. Another issue I have with the job system is the rigidity of it. It feels like you always need a white mage/devout and almost always need a black mage/magus/summoner. If there wasn't a penalty for switching jobs maybe I would've experimented a little more with my party makeup.
The biggest issue with this version of the game is the constant difficulty spikes throughout. I have no problems with hard games, in fact I often prefer harder games + difficulties, but a lot of the difficulty in this game simply comes down to not having enough HP to survive some attacks. Some bosses can basically one shot every member of the party and the next boss will do a quarter of the previous boss's damage. It can be a bit jarring how much the difficulty of each boss varies from encounter to encounter. This is mostly a minor annoyance until the MASSIVE difficulty spike in the last dungeon. I had to grind for about 15 levels (from 40 to 55) and still struggled to beat the game. It seems like there's no way to naturally reach a point where you're powerful to kill the final boss without doing some significant level grinding and that's a shame since the first two games didn't really require any extra grinding to complete. The final boss itself is yet another massive difficulty spike compared to the other bosses you fight in the final dungeon. Worst of all, to save and/or heal during the final stretch of the game you'll need to go back through 3 entire dungeons, one of which is easily the biggest in the game. It's a bit ridiculous how the final stretch plays out. I went through it in about 2.5 hours. Thankfully you heal/restore MP each time you beat a boss, but if you decide to back out halfway through for a save break, I hope you have plenty of elixirs to restore your MP because you'll need them.
Overall, I do recommend it. It's a decently long game that is sometimes uneven, but it's never not fun and I think that speaks volumes more than any complaints I had.

That said, the biggest two issues with the game are
A: The game just doesn't tell you anything. Most equipment, for example, has stat bonuses but the game doesn't tell you and flipping back and forth from the equipment to the stat windows to infer it is tedious and there's loads of room on the screen to show that information on the UI but they simply chose not to. It also doesn't give you any indication what the jobs do or how to use them, so you have to figure it all out through experimentation (or looking it up online but I prefer not to do that while playing) and experimenting with the classes is mechanically discouraged through stat penalties for the first handful of fights after job changes.
The other biggest problem, and the bigger of the two is simply time. The game loves wasting your time. There's a half second delays at the start of each characters turn. The start of every battle has a tedious pan over the enemy formation before it actually starts. The end battle screen is very slow, especially if you get levels or job levels as there's unskippable little animations for it. Then there's a lot of unskippable cutscenes and slow dialogue sequences. Even just opening the menu has a slightly annoyingly slow fade in. There's a bunch of other similar time wasters. Individually none of these would be a big deal but all added together they give the game an unnecessarily slow pacing. It took about 31ish hours for me to beat the game including most side content, I'm betting it would be closer to 15-20hrs if it didn't have all that those little time wasters. If every action in combat didn't have a little delay before it, if most of the animations weren't so slow, if the battles themselves started and ended faster, and if the story sequences could be skimmed through faster.
I could easily see myself giving it another playthrough sometime soon with a different set of classes if not for all those time wasters but with them I can't imagine bothering any time soon. Maybe ever, sadly.

I then again ran into the same issue, only this time I was locked into a place where physical damage was useless and only magic, but I had one caster. So I once again felt like this game didn't make sense. Once I got some of my jobs leveled a bit and found reusable sources for spells, the game become much easier and I was able to find a good party balance. It was very confusing, not intuitive, and the pacing is really poor. The amount of grinding necessary to get equipment and levels was annoying, but I may have done this quite a bit in other games like 6 or 7 and I may be remembering wrong.
I became frustrated at the end of the game, as I was 10-15 levels below what is recommended for the final area. And I know I would need those levels. So I ran around in a circle for quite a bit in the highest yielding XP area, reading a book on auto battle. So boring. This franchise certainly has come a long way.
That being said, I'm glad I stuck it out and finished this game. I really did it just because I've loved the franchise and I'm going back to play the ones I've missed. Figured it was about time to hit some of the older ones. I would really only recommend this game to people who are a bit crazy and want to play all the games of a franchise (like playing The Witcher 1 and 2 lol). Otherwise, just skip it and play some of the better entries in the series. I reluctantly give this game a thumbs up.

The game is based on the 3D remake released back in 2006, though the UI makes me think this is yet another mobile version brought to Steam: so far this seems to be the case for everything I played, doesn’t make me feel positive about how Square Enix treats its main franchise but I digress. It’s based on an old Famicom game and there’s no doubt the job system is the best thing on offer: I like the variety and possibilities it has to offer, which will be greatly expanded in Final Fantasy V. The ships were also pretty cool, especially the Nautilus and the Invincible, and the fact the dungeons were short and straightforward for the most part was wonderful.
I dig the visuals well enough, the game has some great tunes and the story… exists, I guess: it’s not much but at least the 3D remake gave the main characters a sliver of personality and identity. It felt very episodic as I was playing through it and sometimes it was hard to see how the different events I’d run into were connected in the world as a whole. Again, I know the scope is limited because of what the original was made for, but this is still pretty bare when a remake would have been the perfect time to do more with it.
Okay, so I’m just going to say it now before I go into the negatives: I think the game is decent enough BUT it has way too many things that are going to make the experience worse. Honestly, I’m surprised I found so many things to dislike as I played: the job adjustment phase is just dumb and actually discouraged me from changing classes and experimenting often just so I didn’t have to deal with that stupid cooldown mechanic, the spell charges I outright hate along with the fact I had to be shuffling the magic my characters knew or else they’d have stuff they just can’t use, forcing me to change classes at times just to be able to get by (the Scholar class sucks), the jobs take forever to grind to max with all 4 characters and the Crystal Tower… the Crystal Tower can burn in hell for all I care. You have to go across another dungeon before you can enter it and you have to leave the Invincible parked outside, and considering the game has absolutely no save points in dungeons, the endgame is going to be an annoying marathon. This may not seem like a lot but trust me, it adds up and can give you a pretty miserable experience way too often.
The achievements don’t really help with it: again, why is it necessary to have achievements that can easily be screwed up if you’re not using a guide? Why do you want me to open all the chests if some are missable? Why do you want me to fight all the enemies if some are missable? Why do you want me to level all jobs to level 99 with all 4 characters when it’s nothing but a chore? Yes, you’re going to be overpowered and you should also get your normal level to 99 in that process, but this is just mindless grinding. It’s not fun.
Maybe I feel this way because I’ve already complained about this in previous games and this one is more archaic but these things… ugh. Back when I reviewed Final Fantasy V, I mentioned that I had a great time despite reading and hearing that it’s not a good starting point into the franchise: well, they got that mixed up. Final Fantasy III is exactly that: play Final Final Fantasy V over this one, no matter if it’s your first game or not. This one, while decent, is just for those who already know what they’re getting into, so be prepared to endure its worst aspects. I didn't completely hate my time with it: the game starts out great and is fine enough as it advances but drops the ball big time by the end.

Also if you can't run the game you need to install MIcrosoft software. Install both x86 and x64 versions of 2013 and 2015 Visual Studio C++. This will make the game run as its required and most PCs tend to have these already but not all, especially fresh Windows 10 ones.

You are no longer four nameless warriors of light with no backstory who just happened to be orphans. You are still those four orphans, but each is a distinct character with personality. As far as protagonists go Final Fantasy 3 is still very light like the other two games that came before 4, but Final Fantasy 3's DS remake added a ton to the game.
The updated music is amazing, its version of Eternal Wind is beyond amazing.
Final Fantasy 3 is the first installment in the series that allows job switching, while the original game technically had jobs the term and its role in the series as seen in the MMOs, V, X-2, XII: Zodiac Age, and XIII all originated here in III. What the job system means is you can easily swap between different jobs on each character with only a few battles of cool down where you are less effective, and as long as you are willing to grind out any character can do everything. (Though I do not recommend that level of grinding).
As far as how it handles, Final Fantasy 3 runs great on Steam. Run it in windowed fullscreen and make sure to not pause it when it isn't your active window and you can easily play this with a guide in your other monitor if you don't want to miss anything.

The first Final Fantasy game I got my hands on was Final Fantasy III for the DS, I gave that game to my cousin however, and the 2nd game i got my hands on and played through and am still continuing to play through is Final Fantasy XIV, with probably over 3,000+ hours now (I moved from Steam to the official launcher) and have been playing XIV for 3 years. I've been in love with the idea of the Final Fantasy world and XIV helped me get into it more, and I decided that I wanted to play through all the games. So I put as many of them as I could on my wishlist and have gotten most of them as gifts from my family and friends.
But what do I think of the game? well I have only played for 14 hours (probably will be even more), but its already an amazing experience, and i bet I will continue to keep enjoying it for as long as I keep playing it.
Final Fantasy III is a remastered classic, open world, RPG experience. I will say it is an AMAZING GAME to get started with the classic Final Fantasy experience and a great game starting as far back as it goes and going up the numbers.
Music: First things first, most importantly, outside of art, the music. The music is a huge reason as to why I went back to play other games. I love the stories and gameplay and much more, but the music is one of the biggest reasons I got attached to Final Fantasy as a franchise. I would hear FF3 music and I would remember the XIV Crystal Tower Alliance Raid and I would get over excited and want to hear more from the game. It helps invest you into moments and the games.
Story: 3 is as basic as a Final Fantasy story goes, as most of you may or may not know, the first 5 or 6 Final Fantasy games are based around the Crystals, or the heart of your worlds, you have been chosen as the Warrior of Light, to vanquish the darkness to free the light and restore balance to the world. As basic as it gets, and for a time as when the game(s) were released, its understandable, what can ya do? classic experience! But the stories and people you meet and the quests you get long the way is also just as fun and neat.
Characters: Though the characters are cute, as you have 4 Warriors of Light, they have their character arcs when you meet them and Refia has her time with her father in her home town of Kazus. But the characters have very little personality outside of; Luneth is the confused MC, Refia is the daughter of a father who is over-protective, Arc is a shy boy from the same town as the MC who got bullied and Ingus is a former Kings-guard who is sworn to defend. And that makes me a bit sad to see, but you don't really think about it when you first look at all of it the first time and its not extremely detrimental. But I do wish they gave the characters a little more thought, it may change the more I play but starting out, there is not a lot. But from a outside perspective watching these characters looking inward, its pretty alright.
Quests: Your main quest is as it states, to restore light to the world. But you also get many side quests, as you walk around the free roam 2D/3D world, you can get cut-scenes or talk to people who will have a cut-scene, telling you that to the West is a castle that's long since been empty. So you will go that way and then meet someone else who is also having trouble, etc, etc. There is a lot to do. You just might need a guide fro some quests, they aren't always straight forward. Or trial and error.
Leveling: There is a grind, as many classics do. It has the basic, kill monsters in an area closest to your level, have a lot of potions and places where you can restore HP/MP and revive party members when needed and then go back out to grind. That's unavoidable, its not ridiculous grinding like other games I know, and its actually fun, because there is a lot you can keep track of, you can also just relax while you grind and every level means some kind of progress.
Free Roam: As I said, there is free roam in the map you have. Its a fairly big map and area to explore, I've only explored a small portion of the map and I've already met with and gone through 8 different quests. Now grinding to be able to beat the newest boss Medusa. The free roam, despite being in eagle eye view, is still a fun, adventurous experience.
Combat: 3's combat is the classic simple Attack, Magic, Guard, Items, Rear (to put your party member behind to take less damage or keep to the front to deal more damage), and Run away. Your settings of combat and magic and equipment may however change when you choose a different job for your party members. There are jobs/classes such as Knight, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Free Lancer, Thief, and etc. Your fighting style will change with each class you pick up, and some classes you can only get through meeting crystals or beating certain bosses. So figure out your end game team! Or use guides!
Conclusion: Over all, Final Fantasy 3, is a very fun game. Its the basic, classic RPG game. But knowing its one of the older games and came out so many years ago, you should know what you are getting yourself into. Its a wonderful game to play casually and just relax while you grind and figure out how you want your team layout and etc. Overall a wonderful Classic Final Fantasy Experience, I highly suggest this game as a starting out Final Fantasy game, though 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 (ive heard) are also really good games to start out.
It's like, once you sit down and start the game, really get invested and drown out the rest of the world, its like you are watching a story book unfold before you, and its very fun to play and watch.

Also my native resolution is 1900x1200, and it defaulted to that ratio when first starting up the game. It does not run in that aspect, and scared me a little when it started to play the opening sequence at like 2 fps. Switching it to 1600x1200 fixed it.

When this remake first came out on Nintendo DS I was turned off by the 3D graphics and instead wished that they used sprites like the Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II PSP remakes. I eventually relented and picked this up on Steam after Square Enix updated this port to de-Android it a bit by cleaning up controller support and tweaking the UI so it didn't like like a touch screen-inspired mess. I never played the original Final Fantasy III before playing this, but as my first exposure to the game I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.
I didn't like the 3D models at first, but they eventually grew on me. Everything lacks detail, but it has a retro charm to it, and the added expressions on character's faces to convey emotion are a nice touch. The dungeon environments look pretty neat, though, and the monster and boss designs for battle look nice, too. The soundtrack is also really good, and it was cool that they got Nobuo Uematsu to rearrange his original FF3 soundtrack from the Famicom/NES.
For a game that was originally a Famicom/NES game, the scope of this game is very impressive, especially so when compared to Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II. This really does feel like a culmination of the ideas of those two games, and hopefully some day Square Enix can port those games to Steam so people can experience the trilogy to see how the ideas of each game evolve in each subsequent sequel. FF2 dipped its toe in telling a narrative story with your party members and NPC's, but this game really expands on that with party members with actual personality and relationships with the NPCs in the world. It's a great sign of things to come in the excellent Final Fantasy IV that was released on the Super Famicom/SNES. There aren't really any big twists in the story, but it's enjoyable throughout and the ending of the game is a very rewarding resolution for each character.
As for the gameplay, this game's Famicom/NES roots really show with some punishing difficulty at times. The world in this game is huge for a game of its time, but that also means that venturing to where you aren't supposed to be at certain points of the game mean you can unknowingly run into high level enemies that will stomp you. There is also no saving in dungeons, and with frequent encounter rates that means you can lose hours of progress with one bad break. For example, in the Temple of Time I had not done any grinding ahead of that and unfortunately encountered a Dragon that promptly destroyed my team and led to a game over. That honestly annoyed me so much to lose my progress that I took a break from the game. Eventually I came back, though, and I decided to do some side quests and exploring for a more natural approach. Getting through the Temple of Time was very rewarding the second time through, as was the rest of the game from then on, so be warned that your patience might be tried during your time through this game, but it can pay off in the end.
The bread and butter of this game is the job system, though, that lets you customize your party members with a ton of different jobs to choose from. You unlock about a half dozen at a time throughout the game so you don't get overwhelmed, and late game jobs are like powered-up versions of the original jobs you used, so there's a nice bit of progression you experience from the job system in addition to simply gaining experience and leveling up. The game also nudges you in not-so-subtle ways to get you out of your comfort zone with trying to stick to only one job per character by throwing dungeons and bosses at you that are particularly weak or exploited by certain jobs. It has a cool Mega Man-esque feel to it with trying to figure out which jobs work best for certain parts of the story. I guess to curb exploitation or maybe to add artificial difficulty there is a temporary stat penalty when you first switch jobs, which really is just an annoyance since you just need do a handful of battles before the penalty expires. I suppose this is to dissuade players from switching jobs in dungeons, so it's best to plan ahead when you can and have your jobs ready before you enter a dungeon.
Overall I highly recommend this game to anyone that is a fan of the old school NES/SNES Final Fantasy games. Don't let the unappealing 3D models turn you off from giving this game a try. For fans of more modern RPGs this is a bit of a tough game to recommend completely, and perhaps trying the first two Final Fantasy games to see if you can enjoy them first would be recommended before trying this one so you can fully appreciate the evolution this game showed from the first two games.

That being said, this game is just a port and may have some kinks to it. The graphics are not great, but this can run on a potato basically, so there is that. I have read in other reviews that there are some game breaking glitches, but in my experience so far I have not run in to any. As far as ports go, I am just glad I can play this game on PC! (Side note: I did run into the issue where it conflicts with software such as MSI afterburner so if it isn't booting for you that may be the issue.)
10 out of 10, will probably run through it again!

Graphics: While I do enjoy the retro style, and it works in places. Sadly, it often looks like they took the graphics from 3 different games, and just threw them together without thought for the overall look of the game (Battle environments are especially bad).
Gameplay: The addition of auto battle is annoying to me, I would rather they had made combat more engaging rather than just giving us a skip button (luckily auto will get you killed on none trash mobs). But overall the gameplay is fun.
Overall the game feels like a missed opportunity, they should have added so much more when porting it over to PC. On mobile this would be a 9 out of 10 easy, but on PC I would give it no more than a 6 (worth it only if you never played FF 3 and its on sale, otherwise skip it (or get it for mobile/DS ).

When you aren't grinding for hours you'll be taking part in this games story. This game is a huge step up in storytelling and world-building from FF2. Instead of being mute Warriors of Light, or stale cardboard cutouts that speak beaver, you get to play as four named heroes. They're relatively boring but coming the first two Final Fantasies, anything is welcome.
You do need to keep in mind that FF3, though being remade for the DS, is an NES game at heart. That means that the story can't be all too involved. Despite that it's enjoyable where it is. Characters are named, and most of them have discernible traits. The world has a history, to an extent, and you can take the time to read up the lore if you so choose. Cliches are abound, and
the twist villain is lame
but for the most part this is a completely serviceable plot.
TL;DR: Final Fantasy III is a good experience overall. The game-play and job system is great if you're a fan of turn-based combat. however, the story is light and is not in depth enough to be moving to any capacity. Don't make playing this game a priority. It's good, but nothing too special.

For completionists and achievement hunters I would avoid this game. It's not hard but it is a very long grinding process that isn't worth the time it takes. The grind is monotonous and you'll spend hours in the same cave grinding jobs then hours in a different cave grinding levels.
Unless you have a reason for wanting to 100% ff3 I would recommend not doing it

I can't speak much for optimization, but there does seem to be more options to play with in the games launcher than before... yes, this game also has a launcher to change settings. if you want to change any in game settings, you must reboot the game each time.
I would recommend skipping the steam release. I see other people talking about game breaking bugs and what not... if you are interested, I would recommend picking up a copy of the game on DS.
The game is a grindy time sink, from what I remember. So, if you think that suits you, it's perfect to play on the go.

- Grinding isn't excessive, but you will have to grind for a few hours.
- A billion FFXIV plot points were created on FFIII (i didn't know and never seen anyone mention that)
- Seriously, Warriors of Darkness, Cloud of Darkness, World of Darkness, Fat chocobos, Xande, old high tech civilization that vanished, evokers... All came from here.
- Good for listening to podcasts while grinding
- Shallow/barely existent story and characters
- Combat is not always rewarding. Some bosses just require grinding out of nowhere.
If you want something to mindlessly play, i'd recommend this. Otherwise it's not worth the effort.

For the hardest of the hardcore gamers though, the decision to pick up Final Fantasy III was made well before you read this review. Either you need this game or you don’t. Plain and simple.

The overall experience is fine. Pretty standard old school JRPG, nothing fancy, just your basic early 90s JRPG. They recently patched in a much needed auto battle feature wich is great for grinding wich is nice. But this version of the game has a HUGE problem: Within this game exists a glitch that erases your entire progress, both locally and on the steam cloud. Ive had this happen to me twice now. Once on my 99% save file where I just had like 1 or 2 jobs left to master to be done with this game and it really REALLY stings... Now after 235,6h of playtime I've finally given up on getting every Trophy wich has never happened to me before.
I can recomend the game but that glitch is just game breaking and it alone is bad enough for me to say hands off this version...

The latest patch added auto-battle and made a lot of UI improvements which are nice quality of life additions.
However, I still encountered the progress erasing glitch which was also present pre-patch. It seems to trigger randomly and is absolutely game breaking. I had this glitch trigger multiple times at different points in the game, forcing me to return to a previous save. Not fun. You can lose hours of progress or an entire save file to this glitch.
Game is a lot of fun, just don't buy this version.

This is maybe the hardest Final Fantasy game I've ever played. Grinding feels tedious and at no point did I ever feel like I was over leveled. I liked the fact you could change jobs for the situation. Having played Final Fantasy XI for years, these tactics suited me.
The story was fairly bland, but that's to be expected for a RPG from the NES era. It's your typical old school Final Fantasy - Warriors of Light story.
Overall, it was a fun distraction between the more recent games I've been playing.

_=Positives=_
-Auto combat is a saving grace, both automating and speeding up an extreme grind
-Job/class designs are neat and can be fun to play with
_=Neutral=_
-Airship ultra early (almost as soon as the game starts) is pretty jarring and feels weird, but it's nice to go fast?
-Music is just okay in this one. Nothing really amazing that stood out to me or swept me away.
-Fat Chocobo, seemed really useless but was cute
_=Negatives=_
-Story seems really messy, with dozens of B plots that start and end abruptly. Nothing in the world really feels connected, I found I couldn't get attached to any of the side characters because they come and go within 10 minutes, and it repeats many times.
-Crazy grind with power jumps after almost every boss, so be prepared to grind for a long time so that the boss doesn't one-shot your party. You'll be repeating this very frequently
-Job/class switching cooldown, it takes 4+ battles to switch jobs properly, with separate exp pools to earn up to 99 for every job/class. It's a lot of grinding when it feels like you need a lot of different classes for specific game encounters.
-Lots of permanently missable items / content. This may bug you if you're an achievement hunter or completionist.
-Saving can get really frustrating, with it requiring you to be in the overworld. Everything else is a quicksave that is lost if you wipe, and there are long chains of towns / dungeons.
Final Fantasy is a series of giants, and this one fell short for me.

The only cons I could highlight are:
-Story is very cliche (same FF story: Light is gone > dark is bad > find the crystals > stop the bad entity.
-It follows a pattern that become really tiresome, find a town > town has some X problem > go to dungeon to fix problem > town is saved > move to next town.
Overall If you are digging a classic RPG, go for it!

With the old version of this game before the 2020 update, you could find a particular fan-made patch and the UI was made perfectly playable.
However, with this new update, b o y d o i h o p e y o u l i k e m o n o s p a c e d t e x t because it's absolutely everywhere and looks horrendous. The text doesn't even fit in the text boxes! Heck, it's WORSE than the original release of the game!
How is it that a fan made a mod and released it FOR FREE that fixed all the old issues, but paid developers not only cant do the job as well but made it worse?!
