Kauftipp!

Figment is a quirky and casual action-adventure game with puzzle elements. In terms of gameplay there isn’t anything particularly unique, and both battles mechanics and puzzles are quite basic. They’re also not much of a challenge. Nonetheless, controls and movement is very fluid (although at points I wished the character moved a bit faster). Regardless, Figment seems to aim at providing a meaningful experience and passing a message, and at that I think the developers were fully successful.
The game looks great, with some surreal tones but without being overly complicated. In the beginning it kind of reminded me of Samorost, but I think it’s unfair to compare them since Figment’s style is quite unique. Some parts also reminded me of Braid,
particularly with the collecting of memories
, albeit less pretentious.
The soundtrack is a core element of the game, and it’s great how the incidental music mixes with the diegetic depending of the elements near the character. Ah, and the villains sing while they try to kill you
(although according to Rusty, it’s still not a musical!)
.
The narrative takes place inside someone’s subconscious, with various sentiments personified (think “Inside Out”). It is well-written and lightweight, delivering an interesting message without getting too deep. And the dialogs are awash with silly jokes and cultural references, again keeping the light tone.
I’d say that the price is too high for a game that can be 100%ed in 5 hours, but it seems to be at 90% sale often (that’s when I got it), and at that price I think it’s well worth the the money.
PS: despite the warning, the game runs in recent macOS versions.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.
First Impressions
I acquired the game Figment (FG) from the 2018 Humble Bundle monthly deal. For all the time I've had the game, I didn't think much of it, but saw that it had a short clear time, so why not knock out another quick game from my massive play-list? All of the colorful imagery led me to think it'd be a lighthearted journey, but there's more emotional turmoil underneath the surface than I initially suspected. The mind you wander around inside is also considerably older than I would have expected, but we all have figments inside our minds, so it's still fair game.
Gameplay
Based mainly on the game's visuals, I would have sworn that it was a point and click style game, where you'd gather up a heap of seemingly useless junk, slap plenty of duct tape over it, and fix items in the environment. It's quite similar to that, but instead of gathering several items, you only handle a couple of things at any given time. More often than not, you won't permanently fix a broken elevator or a switch that lets you cross a chasm, but will place an item there to obtain access to that location, before picking it back up to reuse elsewhere. I find that more annoying because you invariably solve puzzles in a less than efficient manner due to not having a long-lasting fix that'd let you move freely. As an example, it'd be like trying to nail a board down, but having to walk a few feet away and interact with something unrelated each time you wanted to pick up another nail. Easy, but tedious and annoying.
Within different sections of the game, there will be an emphasis on one type of puzzle in any given area. For instance, the typewriter shoving block puzzles in the logical portion of the mind, or the memorization sections when crossing the floors near the game's climax. This does help build up the theme and aesthetic of the settings, but I typically found the puzzles more annoying than enjoyable. After all, if presented in a more efficient UI and control scheme, they'd be so much easier to play and solve, but the game's mechanics slow it way down since you have to move the main character into place.

Controls
Even though I expected FG to play more like a point and click game, I was actually able to play it with my controller without any significant problems. Since you never have more than a handful of items at any time, sorting through to find the one you want to use is quick and easy. The main downside related to the controls is Dusty's slow movement speed, which doesn't improve with his dodge rolling any. It also makes the combat feel pretty stiff, since his attacks are slow and simple.
Story
One of my main issues is that I'm really unsure who the target audience is for FG. The protagonist is a washed-up has been, primarily because he's the courage of an older father who hasn't stood up against any fears lately. So this would suggest the game is aimed at older people, particularly with some of the curmudgeonly things Dusty says. However, the world is so colorful and whimsical that I initially thought this was the mind of a child, and like the game was made for kids, especially with bosses that sing silly numbers while flinging junk at you. It makes the game come across as muddled, as it doesn't seem to have a clear focus. Additionally, I thought the build-up and pay-off to the story was a bit weak. With the strong sense of fear and dread implied, I wondered if the mind we were exploring knew something that wasn't being shown to the audience. Ultimately though, it was just anxiety about what could have happened, with nothing being wrong at all.

Visuals
Since we don't get much opportunity to see the world outside of the man's head, it's unknown what relevance or meaning the locations shown might have for him. However, it incorporates inanimate objects in atypical and creative ways, such as bridges made out of pencils and a train of thought made out of tinker toys. I find it odd how a good portion of the environment uses childish items like this, instead of something more fitting to his age and experience as a working father. The overhead perspective gives a good vantage point of the environment, which is helpful both for getting around and solving puzzles.
Sound Design
I wouldn't know what genre to place the music into, but some of the percussion instruments used were atypical, as they'd make sounds like scraping wood and clanging metal. Guitars were also fairly prominent in the songs, and though some weren't my cup of tea, I think the music does a good job of setting the mood for the areas they're played. Additionally, with each boss representing a fear, each got a unique song pertaining to how that fear manifests for the mind they inhabit. These were all entertaining and fun accompaniment to their fights. There's some voice acting in FG, and I thought the voices fit the personalities well.

Pros
???? I enjoyed the songs that the bosses sang, and only wished they would have kept repeating it if you hadn't finished the fight by the time it ended. Either way, it was a high point for the game.
???? While playing through FG, I only got a bit confused on what to do next a couple of times, which isn't bad for a game of this nature.
Cons
❌ Dusty's movement speed is slow and sluggish, especially when interacting with other objects. It makes the idea that he's a heroic figure untenable. If you die in this game, I expect this to be a factor in at least some of those deaths.
❌ I get that fighting was included to go along with the theme of courage, but I'd have preferred a purely puzzle focus instead. It's more annoying than fun anyways.
Tips
???? Consider every path you create for yourself as temporary, as you'll likely have to reform it elsewhere or take a different route than you first expect.
???? You can't ever create an irreversible mistake in any of the puzzles, so if you're stuck, try shifting things around in a different way.
Final Thoughts
The matter that I keep coming back to with this game is who they intended on making it for. It's too simple and plain to appeal to an older audience, especially for experienced gamers. However, the tone and primary subject revolving around a comatose father doesn't seem like something that'd appeal to kids. Even if I ignored this matter though, the issues caused by the game design not being optimal for solving the puzzles and moving around in the environment definitely irked me. They did some fun things with the setting of being in a person's mind, but several games have done the same, so they've got plenty of competition out there on this matter. Overall I don't recommend FG, if nothing else because I don't know who I'd recommend it for.

I didn't thought I would like this, yet I did
⏰ How long to beat Figment:
- Main Story - 5 Hours
- Main + Extras - 5½ Hours
- Completionist - 7 Hours
Figment is an puzzle adventure game where you play as a weird creature in pursuit for revenge. The whole adventure happens in the brain and the whole game has some interesting visuals that I'll get into details.
⚔ Gameplay:
☑️ It's a one-time experience
☑️ Only for achievements
???? If you wait a few months/years (try playing with mods)
???? Definitely
???? Infinitely replayable
As I've said, the game is focused on puzzles, but I can't say that the puzzle sections are really difficult to overcome. What really makes this game interesting is that if it wouldn't feel like it's for adults, it would make for an interesting game for kids. Can really get twisted and I've had fun with that.
???? Fun:
???? I'd rather watch paint dry
???? Hard to enjoy
???? Repetitive
☑️ Actually pretty amusing
???? The kind of fun you'll remember
???? Ride of your life
Although the combat is really simple, each boss and enemy variety brings a fun experience and uniqueness. The levels are pretty interesting and at times well thought, so one level doesn't really feel like the next, although they have a theme behind it.
???? Graphics:
???? MS Paint
???? Bad
???? Meh
???? Graphics don't matter in this game
☑️ Good (nothing special)
???? Beautiful
???? Masterpiece
It's really hard here to say regarding graphics because the whole world looks so weird, cartoonish and strange. But leaving that aside, it's a beautifully designed world.
???? Makes your ears bleed
???? Bad
???? Not special
???? Good
☑️ Beautiful
???? Masterpiece
To be honest, I've enjoyed each song to the max, sang by the bosses. It's strange that it's part of how the bosses interact with you, but it's a really cool feature and makes the whole battels from absolute simplicity to epicenes in seconds. I liked that the most about the game.
???? Story:
???? This game has no story
???? Like playing Temple Runners for the story
☑️ It's there for the people who want it
???? Well written
???? Epic story
???? Masterpiece
I can't spoil much about the story, but it's straight forward. You're the good guy, going for the bad guy. At times I felt that the whole story is inclined towards children, until the characters started cursing and all, then I've kinda got confused even more.
But to keep it short, you have an accident, and your mind is going crazy. Dusty and it's trusted companion Piper, the flying positive friend, go on a journey to help discover whats going on and fix the mind.
???? Length:
???? Long enough for a cup of coffee
☑️ Short
???? Average
???? Long (if u can even finish it)
???? To infinity and beyond
The game is very much linear and unless you're trying to get all achievements like I did, it shouldn't take you more or less than I did. Somewhat around 7 hours to be fair. Puzzles are not too difficult and it shouldn't take you much to complete.
???? Price:
???? Free
???? Underpriced
???? Perfect Price
☑️ Could be cheaper
???? Overpriced
???? Complete waste of money
I can't say I would justify the price as being the right one, so I think it could be cheaper. At this point, getting it on discount would be ideal.
???? Difficulty:
???? My 90-year-old grandma could play it
☑️ Easy
???? Normal
???? Hard
???? Dark Souls (if u play with bell demon and charmless it's extremely hard)
The whole levels are pretty easy and not that annoying to complete. You should have an easy time if you are an experience gamer.
⚖ Pros & Cons:
➕ Pros:
+ Funny characters and dialogues.
+ Boss fights are pretty nice and the songs are great, I wish I could listen more.
+ Short story, worth checking out.
+ Interesting world and puzzles.
➖ Cons:
- The isometric world is sometimes weird, as you can't step on areas very easily.
- Quite shallow in combat and puzzles, I wish there was more.
- No abilities or anything to make your character feel more powerful except a HP increase.
⚙ Bugs:
☑️ Clean
???? I've not encountered, but there might be for some people
???? A few bugs here and there
???? Can get annoying
???? Buggy and glicthy all the time
I've had no issues whatsoever when it comes to games.
⭕Conclusion:
Figment is an interesting title and now that I've found out that Figment 2 is coming out, I'm pretty stoked that I played this game. At the end of the whole game, I felt that I got really invested in the story, even if it was a simple game.
I really hope that the next one picks up a more serious and complex store, and still keeps it fun and enjoyable. Puzzles and combat could definitely be a lot more challenging.

I enjoyed my time throughout. None of the puzzles were too complicated in their nature but they were generally fun and rewarding to solve.
The visual design for Figment is simply fantastic. There is quite the mix of ideas and concepts throughout that meshes together well. Figment tells a lot of the story through music and it delivers it with some rather memorable tracks
The characters, writing and dialogue were quite clever and enjoyable. I loved the boss fights and definitely was looking forward to the next encounter each and every time.
Overall I'd recommend grabbing this on a sale or bundle.

My main issue is the lack of depth in absolutely all aspects: combat, puzzles, plot, worldbuilding... The game is shallow all around, so whichever aspect is the most important for you, you will probably walk away dissatisfied.
- The visuals and the music are stellar, and together share the crown for the strongest part of the game. At the same time, the voice acting and sound direction feel strange at best at times.
- The movement and combat are functional if minimal.
- The puzzles are quite simple and, apart from a few puns, not really integrated in the plot. The backtracking in some of the puzzles feels a bit excessive and unnecessary.
- The plot is minimal and conveyed clearly (though I feel like the chronological order in which memories are presented is not the best choice here).
- The levels feel just varied enough, but do not really connect that well to the overarching plot. It might well be that some of the ideas there went over my head, but that feels unlikely, since the game does not appear subtle in the slightest: any pun, any metaphor, any visualisation is really hammered in. Not once did I notice a cute design choice without it being emphasized and explained in the dialogue the very next moment.
So the game is competent for the most part, it just lacks focus somewhat to be up there at the top.

It has a very child-like charm to it, but is tempered by an undercurrent of adult wisdom and understanding, and it made me smile, chuckle, and even cry a little.
I liked the way they approached the way the mind works, and really enjoyed the music. The puzzles were challenging, but not overly so, and felt satisfying to resolve!
I found the story simple, but effective, and it's been a pleasure to play around in these mindscapes.
I also feel as if this game would be suitable for children, maybe around the 8+ range-- I could see it as something a parent could work together with their child through some of these obstacles and bond. :)

Judging from the low player count, it’s a bit sad that this puzzle-heavy action-adventure is still a kind of underrated hidden gem, absolutely non-deserved in my opinion. Because honestly, I can’t really decide what I cherished the most, I definitely adored everything of it, starting from the lovely hand-drawn graphics, the unique, creative backgrounds (based on the concept of brain regions), the well-scripted story, up to the casual to non-stressing gameplay. Yes, there are some fights in the game, but they are really easy, probably even a good starting point for people who want to get used to general fighting scenarios in other games. But what really caught my interest the most actually was the music. Oh boy, is it great. Not only did everything you touch kind of make a sound (this actually reminded me of some Amanita games), but there’s even a whole soundtrack to listen to. You probably don’t know the band, but Stöj Snak (some people might remember them from A Normal Lost Phone) just outdid themselves, not only with the fantastic theme song, but also every boss fight is actually sung like some kind of musical, and I’ve never ever seen this in any game. Just makes it so special in my opinion.
But enough said, just try it out at some time if you want a casual awesome time of puzzle gameplay with light fighting and fantastic feel-good music. It’s really dirt cheap in sales, so seriously, I can’t think of anything to speak against it. And personally, I’m really thrilled to see what Figment 2 will bring to us.

Pros
-Imaginative environments
-Decent puzzles
-Meaningful story/theme that occurs in the background
Cons
-Cringey dialogue
-Repetitive and dull game-play that can get boring
The creative design and art style create a unique world that I can really appreciate and that makes this game stand out compared to other games.
That being said, as I played the game I eventually found myself just trying to rush through things to get it over and done with. Some of the dialogue came off as being incredibly cringe-worthy and while the puzzles were OK, the simple game-play mechanics ended up getting repetitive especially when you're trying running around the map trying to find pieces to complete your puzzle. The main story isn't really inspiring either, although, there are underlying story elements that's touching.
Maybe the main problem is that I'm not the target audience. As a kids game, I guess it's alright. Otherwise, I'd probably recommend something else.

what i like about it: - cute artwork
- knocking on doors always made me smile
- singing bosses
- fair puzzles
what i do not like: mouse and keyboard works, but using WASD to move the blocks and dodge (esp on the clocks) feels a bit strange sometimes
- the remembranes stones should get destroyed or get a mark after the remembrane has been obtained and/or the collection of remembranes should show where you got them
ALL HAIL THE MIND!

To start off, the quality of content in Figment is great. Wonderful artwork, solid voice acting. The original soundtrack is amazing (check out the music video in the steam store).
It's the gameplay that feels lacking. After a while, the simplistic puzzles and backtracking become tedious and a bore. On top of this, your character moves quite slow and it's easy to lose interest in the game while trudging through previously completed areas, all because you forget to pick a gear piece back up.
I can see how this game might be enjoyable for kids and children (lots of poo and fart jokes). Also the boss fights border on full blown musicals and I'm not a fan of musicals... but the lyrics are witty and comical and it's used sparingly enough to be enjoyable. Figment just doesn't reach out enough to adults... unless you really like poo and fart jokes.
Pros:
- Great characters and voice acting
- Wonderful artwork
- Original soundtrack
- Easy 100% Achievements
Cons:
- Puzzles and Mechanics are a bit basic.
- Character movement speed is the kind of excruciatingly slow drag that urges you to mash the roll dodge button even though it isn't getting you there any faster...

Pretty good action-adventure puzzle game
Pros:
→ Interesting story
→ Great soundtrack
→ Lovely fairy tale-like graphics
→ Well-done voice acting
Cons:
→ Repetitive gameplay
My observation:
I decided to give this game a try because it has been sitting in my library for quite a while and seemed worthy enough for me to put some time into it. Going to the game, I did not expect much, although the art style caught my eye.
I would like to begin with by saying that I was blown away with the voice acting, the way how the story is told and how these indie developers nailed hiring the right people for it. The main dialogue between Dusty and Piper is filled with puns (not something I particularly enjoy but I bet a lot of people will enjoy it more than me). It is quite fun to knock on random doors and always get a different response too. What I also found unique is the fact that the bosses sing and the singing has been executed very well which satisfied my ears. Speaking of bosses, none of them are hard to beat, not even the last one. The hardest thing about beating the bosses is the journey to get there. Some puzzles are easier to solve than others but, all in all, they are simple enough to figure them out on your own. What I would point out; as other people mentioned here; is the lack of innovation when it comes down to them, the puzzles are nice but nothing special and they get tedious over the course of time. The fighting mechanics regarding smashing up the enemies are not anything extraordinary, just another run-of-the-mill. The controls can be clunky at times. Sometimes when you are walking, you can get stuck but by pressing the dodge button, the issue will be solved so it is not a big deal.
At the end, I was pleasantly surprised how well it all turned out to be despite its minor flaws and the puzzle solving repetitiveness. It is not the most action packed title, however, whenever it goes on sale it is a steal for the price. You are going to get more than what you bargain for with utter certainty. Especially taking into account that the developers have not been around for long at all. The team behind it managed to fix pretty much everything with the updates. The game consists of 23 achievements (some of which can be pain in the neck to unlock), it has obtainable trading cards and counts towards the game collector badge.

The gameplay is slow and repetitive. The puzzles are not challenging. Cutscenes for pushing buttons and too much walking around really hurt the flow of the game. The combat system is simplistic with nothing rewarding or interesting about it.
The writing and characters are cliche and annoying. The voice acting uses lots of poorly-executed accents (English version). The music is okay, but never quite lands with the right impact.
I'll give credit to the creative visual art and the musical bosses, but neither of those salvage this.
Overall, there's a solid children's game underneath all this if the developers had polished their ideas, lightened the tone of the game, and play-tested even a little. As it stands, it's not worth your time.

Information / Review English
Figment is an action adventure developed by Bedtime Digital Games.
Gameplay / Story
Some wonder how the subconscious mind of the brain works and what all of this is? Then this game could be just right for you. The game begins with a misfortune, which is initiated by a loud bang, then you hear a child scream and then there is nothing, no more noises to be heard. When we wake up we ended up with Dusty. The man with mouse ears and tail is the manifestation of courage and is taking a nap when the lively bird Piper drops by. He reports a terrible threat. The mind they both find themselves in is in jeopardy. But Dusty doesn't give a damn. For him it's only about one thing: to catch the thief of his scrapbook. Fortunately, one is related to the other. Together, the two pursue the purple album thief, whom they identify as a nightmare. We steer Dusty from the isometric view through the hemispheres of the brain, Piper flies behind us. In Figment, the left hemisphere stands for creative thinking, the right hemisphere for logical thinking. Both consist of floating islands, so levels. Sometimes they are colorful and cheerful, sometimes dark and are reminiscent of the inside of a clockwork. Sometimes we fly through the air with a bright red apple balloon, other times documents and spilled coffee embody the seriousness of life. Wherever they go, Dusty and Piper have to solve puzzles to move forward and occasionally pick up the wooden sword to put an end to the bad nightmares. Great importance is attached to music in Figment. Not only do our opponents sing songs about existential fears, but the landscape itself plays music.
Pro
+ disturbing story that takes place in the subconscious
+ hand-drawn landscapes
+ Combat system that is easy to understand
+ in-depth background music
+ Puzzles
+ Achievements and trading cards
Contra
- there is a lack of variety in terms of play
Conclusion
Figment offers you a surreal picture book, which is presented beautifully and at the same time disturbing. Clear purchase recommendation for this genre.

Beide bestehen aus schwebenden Inseln, Level also.
Pro
+ verstörende Geschichte die im Unterbewusstsein spielt
+ handgezeichnete Landschaften
+ Kampfsystem das leicht verständlich ist
+ tiefgehende Musikuntermalung
+ Rätsel
+ Errungenschaften und Trading Cards
Kontra
- spielerisch fehlt es an Abwechslung
Fazit
Figment bietet dir ein surreales Bilderbuch, welches wunderschön und doch zugleich verstörend dargestellt wird. Klare Kaufempfehlung für dieses Genre.

Figment is primarily a puzzle game with occasional combat. The puzzles are well integrated into the environment but it does slightly suffer from overusing the same core mechanics (fetch X to put in Y, inventory management, memory) fortunately this is mitigated by the short level lengths. The combat is simple and intuitive but nothing special, you defeat the bosses by solving short puzzles rather than any reaction-based hack and slash. I think they could have made this game without any combat and it wouldn't lose anything.
The atmosphere is incredible because of both the great environment design and soundtrack. You are playing inside of a person's subconscious mind and everything in this game is a metaphor within that; from the main character, to the platforming hazards, the NPCs and the big bad bosses. It's quite fun to figure out what each element is representing, for example, there is a classic 'avoid the falling object' hazard in Figment but the objects are teeth and teeth falling out is a common anxiety dream. The soundtrack is incredible, hilarious and emotive. I was always looking forward to the next boss fight as each one has a catchy musical monologue.
The story in this game is mediocre but told exceptionally well. The mind is in trauma and you play as Dusty, an unwilling protagonist, trying to figure out what is going on whilst overcoming his own issues and delivering sass along the way. It's a sad story with sarcastic overtones and I love it every terrible rhyme in it.

Figment is an adventure game in the sense that you have specific quests to get things done in order to move the storyline along, you will fight monsters with your sword, and you will solve puzzles as you go through the game's beautiful world. I can't say enough about the graphics. They are gorgeous for this type of game and so creatively created. The art design is phenomenal. The music is immensely a part of the game immersion and they did a fabulous job of offering not only supportive sounds, but sounds that can be easily taken outside of the game and enjoyed as well.
The voice overs are actually really good too. Typically independent devs don't do great when it comes to voice overs. Here the voices are varied and very well done and recorded. The audio experience as a whole is above par by all means. The puzzles are mostly about finding objects that you can use to extend bridges, blow polluted smoke out of the way to access more areas, or finding gears to help get lifts to work. The puzzles are simple and the game plays out very much like a casual game. However, the puzzles add a nice flavor to the entire game and make you feel like your overcoming obstacles as you progress. The idea here is that the devs want you to experience and enjoy their game, not get stuck. It all comes together very well.
I just played this game after playing another Bedtime Digital game, Back to Bed. I thought the devs did a good job on that game as well, so I thought I'd give them another try and this developer is top notch, up there with the likes of Amanita Design. Give this game a try, it's a wonderful experience, just don't expect anything you'd expect to see from a AAA, this is exactly why indie devs are making their mark in the world of video games.

Very good voice acting.
Good music and sounds and they fit the game pretty well.
After the main storyline you can continue to collect the remaining collectibles if you have missed any.
Neutral:
Advertisement at the start screen, you have to click 'start' on the screen to enter the main menu. It took me a while to find out because the 'start' button isn't very noticeable.
Cons:
Some missable achievements.
In the last location, there is a puzzle where you have to push 2 boxes and block the purple wave, if you push one of the boxes too far, you might not to able to finish this puzzle and may have to restart this specific level.

WHAT I LIKED:
+ Optimism versus pessimism. Dusty, a downbeat retired protector of the conscious mind, reluctantly fights the horde of nightmarish invaders with his incredibly optimistic flying friend Piper. Nestled within the colourful illustrations that provides Dusty with a sense of adventure, is a deep story revolving around seeking lost courage. Replenishing a sense of bravery. The deepest corners of the worldly mind, zany characters and rock-inspired music emphasise the meaningful story that, more often than not, relishes in its own subtlety.
+ Salvador Dalí's masterpiece 'The Persistence of Memory' clearly inspired the surrealistic illustrations within Figment's world-building. From kettle-shaped houses perched on the floating islands of Freedom Isles to mechanised tracks supplied throughout Clockwork Town. Each of the four main areas, including Cerebrum City, stylistically resembled a different aesthetic whilst employing a consistent illustrative style, making each level colourfully beautiful to glare at.
+ Make sure your thinking cap is equipped! Figment attempts to balance its mundane yet mandatory combat with an array of logic puzzles. From sliding block obstacles that provide weight to unlock a new path, to reflecting enemy projectiles so that they erode cursed vines entangling specific items. The level design from a game mechanic perspective was excellent, and admittedly some of the puzzles in Clockwork Town were deviously fiendish.
+ Remember, remember. Lost memories are scattered throughout Figment's world. Though entirely optional to collect, they provide an additional challenge that almost certainly will force the player to backtrack through those surreal lands.
WHAT I DISLIKED:
- Whilst the aforementioned puzzles excelled in their design, their repetitive instances consequently made them more tedious with each encounter. They become longer. They become harder. And, before your filthy mind thinks of something else, they rarely introduced any new obstacles within them. More time will be spent pushing and pulling blocks rather than actually progressing through the creatively designed levels, and depending on the player's patience, will regrettably test their devotion to completing the story. The piano puzzle? Perfect design. The sixteenth light box puzzle? Not so much.
- The lead game designer, whom is also a musician, was inspired to provoke a melodic undertone through Dusty's adventure. The nightmares themselves sing spiteful lyrics during their boss encounters, with Piper piping up occasionally. At their best moments they are cheesy, however at their worst it proved to be more of a distraction from the central narrative. Most likely comes down to personal taste, coming from someone who is not a particular fan of that style of music...
- The puzzle involving three instruments needing to be pitched perfectly in order to obtain an item from a ear-shaped tree? No, thank you. As a tone deaf gamer who can't decipher a good note from a bad one, this was a heck of a frustrating puzzle!
VERDICT:
6/10 endorphins

Between a solid soundtrack, the characters, the content, and the level/puzzle design...
I really feel like I found a little hidden gem!
Picked it up on a pretty steep sale and it took ~4.5 hours, but some places I would just take a moment and stop to appreciate the art and the ambient music c:

Is Figment worth your time and money?
Yes. Graphically the games art style is nice and interesting and it runs well. The sound design is nice. Gameplay is simple and relatively easy, the puzzles are light hearted and not overly hard or mentally taxing.
The story and writing are interesting to say the least. Every joke is a pun and it gets a bit tiresome. My biggest gripe with this game would have to be the somewhat bad but funny voice acting at times.
All in all, the game is very short coming in at around 4 hours. This is if you only do the story and don’t bother with the collectibles. It’s fun, funny it not a bit boring.
This game is best played with a controller as there is no rebinding of keyboard keys

The game does look very good and the music is really cool. The puzzles are all interesting, none particularly challenging, but I guess that could be attributed to how well it was designed. And yes, the voices definitely varied in quality. I don't think any of them were done particularly well, little bird that follows you around was especially annoying at times. So maybe the writing is partly to blame for that as well. But yeah, the main villain having an odd bro-like accent was... well, kinda odd. The 3D models weren't as good, definitely, but I kinda gave them a break on that one, being an indie development team and whatnot.
Thanks Thiago Duarte for this awesome gift! ❤

Do you like the idea of a game that promotes extremely dangerous anti-science by equating autism, a developmental disorder, to common diseases that can somehow be transmitted via vaccine, placing Figment somewhere in the realm of commercial anti vaxxer propaganda?
Do you like a game with writing so juvenile that even children wouldn't find it amusing, much less endearing, and with the obnoxious voice acting to match (see: Piper)?
I sure don't.
Rating: ★★½. A waste of a visual artist's talent.

Apart from the few combat segments, it's a quite relaxing puzzle game. Only in the last section, there's some timing and fast dodging involved. No need to worry about dying. Save points are plenty and the game is 100% completable even if you fail multiple times.
Voices and some of the sound effects are really hilarious. There's a whole bunch of house doors you can knock on. Most of them will trigger a funny spoken monologue. Almost peed my pants after hearing some. Not necessarily because of what they say, but how they say it. And these bird houses..
Combat is simple and a bit sluggish, but so are the enemies. Just take a slow approach and use the more than plenty health orbs you'll find on your way. The boss battles require a bit of thought though, in a good way.
The audio and visuals certainly carry this game.
Entertaining and fun.

Figment is as good an example as any for this problem. If you’re thinking of buying it, chances are you like the art style, but some part of you must also expect it to be an interesting game, right? Surely nothing that looks this pretty and creative could be boring and derivative. There’s no way that you could know that the gameplay mechanics and puzzle design are underdeveloped and directionless, with the level of depth in combat and exploration of many early PlayStation 1 titles, right?
I think that’s really all I can say about Figment. It’s a video game, technically, with gameplay, and if that and a couple of pretty pictures are all it takes to get you going, then yes, you should probably buy this, but if you don’t want to pay money to struggle through the most outdated gameplay money can buy, then no, Figment is not worth your time or money.

Figment is a casual action puzzle game that mostly plays like a point and click game, except for the combat system. The gameplay mostly consists of simple, straightforward puzzles. They mostly concern what you should do with found items, as opposed to having consistent puzzle mechanics. They occasionally get reused, but they are rarely expanded on, they just stay as one-dimensional mechanics. Still, Figment generally achieves what it sets out to do, it is just held back by its niche appeal.

The puzzles are nothing special and wouldn't have been a mark against it in a better game, but the amount of unnecessary walking between platforms really slowed things down. It bothered me a lot of the props were completely superfluous. For instance, a dial next to a goal that required two items to access wasn't an indicator of progress; it was irrelevant to the puzzle.
The story is predictable and also does a disservice to people who suffer from actual depression or other mental health issues.
This had the makings of what could have been a good little game, but it all added up to something I couldn't wait to end.

In this beautifully illustrated, surreal world you and your little companion take on an adventure through a traumatized person's mind, going through all their fears, emotions, scattered around, within different pieces of memories, that you have to collect.
The puzzles are light and not something mind-boggling. However they are very diverse and cleverly done, which is a part of the enjoyment in this game.
The combat is simple but fun, well balanced and suiting the story's theme.
So, don't expect any challenging combat, as this is not what the game aims to offer.
The art is gorgeous, full of surreal places, creatures and objects. Everything in this game is cute, but just cute enough and nothing too much.
The music and voice acting is absolutely amazing, perfectly complementing the art style of the game.
Voice actors did a great job, including singing their own character's theme songs.
The world, the atmosphere, the creatures, the music and everything in Figment has such a perfect harmony, leaving you with the essence of that world, even after you've finished the game.
For the ones who like cute and beautifully crafted surreal worlds , full of strange creatures and surroundings, with light, (but diverse and clever) puzzles, and places full of adventure - this game is definitely for you. It is suitable for adults and children as well, although there are few curse words.

Figment is a pretty simple action/adventure game whose premise and plot you can very likely guess with a high degree of accuracy from the title alone. It's a good title.
Objectively the game seems very solid. The are visuals excellent and well-polished, the writing comptent, the music quite catchy and the voice acting professional. But it didn't really click for me: and thankfully steam reviews are about either recommending or not recommending a game, so I don't really need to suffer through an in-depth qualitative analysis. And neither do you!
Suffice it to say that I, personally, found that while you run around and can swing a sword, there was very little action -- this is much more of a point-and-click adventure with some light action elements. Not a problem--I love that genre, too. The thing is... the initial plot and characterization is very cliched, with the player character being especially grating. I don't care for his voice, I don't care for his character design, and I especially don't care for his personality.
So with that in mind, I do not recommend this game. It's well-made, however, and worth giving a shot if you're fond of the genre or visual aesthetic (which, again, is fantastic). If nothing else, the landscapes are quite fun to explore: giant floating no. 2 pencil staircases, nets of buzzy electric wiring, filament-bulb shaped balloons whose strings you can sever at will.

The Short Version:
Imagine a worse Bastion combined with a worse Zelda, painted over with cutesy surrealist graphics. Now lock the controls to WASD, but make the map isometric and filled with puzzles requiring precise dodging and movement on the diagonal. If you die at any point in an action sequence, the whole battle and possibly the last puzzle you solved will reset, and sometimes you will respawn directly in front of an enemy shooting projectiles. For the icing on the cake, sprinkle in some game-breaking bugs that might cause you to have to restart from scratch after several hours invested.
The Long Version:
– Art –
The storybook graphics are adorably imaginative, but the heavy-handed symbolism and visual puns feel both hokey and tonally disconnected from the opening cutscene.
– Sound –
The stage music, incidental tunes, and sound effects are all catchy, and match up well with the motifs of each area. Additionally, each of the three bosses sings their own lyrically descriptive theme song.
I personally liked the voice acting of the overly-grumpy protagonist and his chipper companion, but found the rest of the voice cast fantastically absurd and bizarre. So many accents were attempted, but I’m not sure how many of them succeeded.
– Story and Dialogue –
The opening cutscene is ominous, but the memory cores don’t tell a strong enough narrative to get personally invested, and the ending pulls its punches so there winds up being barely any emotional impact to the story.
The memory cores are also easily missed if you’re not paying close enough attention to the location of the symbols on your first pass through each area, so I ended up looking up the last two after engaging in a marathon of fruitless backtracking.
As you progress through the game you’ll hear some amusing dialogue and banter, especially knocking on houses and talking to the mayor, but the game also contains a few instances of insensitive writing, such as listing autism in the litany of plagues and sicknesses and referring to the child-like female bird companion as “turkey tits.”
– Combat –
While the enemy attacks are all well telegraphed, the combat is still more frustrating than it needs to be. This is due in large part to the clunky controls, but also because:
A) you can tumble into immovable scenery objects and get stuck
B) projectiles often cover the entire width of the cramped combat area
C) the camera sometimes auto-zooms in farther than the enemy movement range, so enemies are able to hit you from off screen while remaining safely untargetable by you
D) projectiles still hit you if you accidentally get locked into an elevator animation
Luckily you have infinite lives, and will often spawn on the last screen before you died.
Unluckily, you will lose all battle progress, may additionally lose progress on a previous battle or puzzle, and sometimes your character will spawn directly in the path of a projectile.
The boss battles and immortal enemy battles were actually fun though, because you need to use the environment and the enemy attacks to your advantage.
Throughout the game there are frequent health refills, and killing enemies releases endorphins which act as XP, but these powerups sometimes fall off the side of the screen or fall behind scenery objects where the player can’t reach.
– Puzzles –
The majority of the puzzles in the game involve manipulating the environmental gimmicks using batteries, discs, switches, gears, boxes, and buttons in order to open new pathways forward.
There are also a few unique puzzles peppered throughout the game. Most of these rely on context clues, but some of them, like the alignment of the four gears, are obtuse and give little to no feedback to the player.
I liked the sequencing and item management style logic puzzles the best, but was decidedly NOT a fan of the later shell-pushing and precision dodging puzzles - again, mostly because of the poor controls that don’t lend themselves to clean isometric movement. My left hand was throbbing in pain by the time I finished the last area.
Even the most interesting and clever stage puzzles in the game, though, wore thin with excessive repetition. I can understand introducing a challenge and then amping up the difficulty once or twice, but each stage gimmick idea was overused to the point of boring tedium. This made the game into such a frustrating slog that I found myself heavily identifying with the final boss’s lyrics because it truly felt like I was being absorbed by sadness and misery the longer I played.
– Items –
There is at least one item in the game that takes up space in your inventory and is never used.
There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to what items you can borrow running back and forth between areas, and what items disappear from your inventory if you try to leave with them.
All color-coded items are labelled, so it is colorblind friendly at least.
– Glitches and Bugs –
The moving platforms are very persnickety, yet again because of the game’s control scheme that never allows you to quite line up right with your target. I had better success tumbling on and off them than walking.
One of the piano puzzles triggers with 2/3 keys.
There is a major glitch in the Isles where you can fall underneath the floor layer. Quickload brought me back on solid ground, but after doing so I experienced a further game-breaking bug where the edges of bridges and platforms no longer registered as boundaries. That meant I could freely walk around on the background clouds, which I abused to my joy and delight, bypassing a puzzle barrier in the process. Leaving the area from the closest exit and re-entering fixed the glitch, but also permanently trapped me on the wrong side of the puzzle, making it impossible to return to Cerebrum. I had to restart a new game from the beginning, losing three hours of gameplay.
You also can’t skip any cutscenes or dialogue, so if you are forced to restart due to a glitch, you will need to sit and rewatch everything.
– Final Thoughts –
The couple of good things about this game are drastically overshadowed by the bad. It is just not a fun play experience. In fact, I think I actually go beyond just disliking this game to pure hatred. The controls are a terrible match for the gameplay, the majority of the challenges are repetitious and quickly start to grate on your nerves, the story is at best a paper thin outline, and the programming is buggy as heck.

My biggest issue with this game is questioning why the developers felt the need to give the cute, toy-like protagonist such crude/adult dialog. The art and simple gameplay of this game would otherwise be perfect for children if not for this.
