Contrary to what a lot of other people will say, I actually quite like the visual style of Fallout 1 and 2 (yes, even those weird-looking talking heads, which I personally find to be charming in a strange way). The actual gameplay is also not nearly as bad as some would have you believe. The combat is surprisingly engaging, and the occasional randomness of it means you'll never really know what to expect going into a fight.
But of course, the real reason why Fallout 2 is a masterpiece of the RPG genre is the writing. This game has possibly the best written dialogue of any I've ever played, and the few bits of actual spoken dialogue are fantastic. The main story is engaging the whole way through, and there are so many memorable side quests. Also, this game is absolutely hilarious. There are so many absurd situations and characters, stupid jokes, and fourth-wall breaks. Worth the price of admission for just that alone.
One thing to note is that this game (and the original too) don't like to hold your hand. You're expected to solve problems and complete quests without map markers or exact directions, which I understand is definitely not for everyone, but I personally cannot get enough of it.
If you like New Vegas, and don't have a problem with the dated graphics and gameplay, please do yourself a favor and play Fallout 2 (but not before playing the first one).

I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Vault City.
Too Long; Didn't Read: Fallout 2 feels very familiar, with little changes to how the game is played. But the story told is far more adventurous, with the size of the world being significantly larger than the previous game.
Fallout 2 can be picked up by a newcomer to the series, thanks to a very basic tutorial and the lack of a time limit. I would very much recommend this entry in the series, especially to RPG fans.
????️The Gameplay????
It seems Fallout 2’s main priority is to create a larger wasteland with a huge cast of memorable characters. As such, most of the changes to the gameplay are quality of life and convenience, such as being allowed to skip random encounters, a button to loot everything from a container, etc.
Having left the character creator, exploration and combat almost completely untouched, Fallout 2 may look more like an expansion of its predecessor, rather than a true sequel. But by forcing the player to step out of their comfort zone and use all of the skills and mechanics offered, the game instead fixes the few issues I had with the first game and presents the wasteland in a whole new light.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2515212645
Fallout’s biggest problem was the stagnant combat. However, the variety of ways you could interact with its people, places and objects was where the gameplay shined, with it offering a variety of ways to play, as well as reward creative thinking. The combat felt like it lacked any diversity in the first game. This has been addressed by limiting your options of attack at the beginning, so you learn to appreciate the variety of playstyles provided later.
The first hour of gameplay leaves the player with only a spear and their bare hands. Since most returning players would have most likely chosen guns as their primary skill, suddenly the first hour of the game is significantly more difficult, with the first gun you come across only able to fire once before needing to be reloaded.
This heightened difficulty is very much welcome. Fallout 2 does have a tutorial of sorts, with the first area being a mandatory temple that forces you to use specific skills and items to progress, something sorely missing from the first game.
But after that, you are left to your own devices. You must talk to every character, search every nook and cranny, and remember any and all information you are told in order to progress the story. Combat is frequent and coupled with the steep prices of guns and ammunition, Fallout 2 is far less forgiving than its predecessor.
Exploring the wasteland has been made purposefully more tedious, as the map is bigger with major locations being more spread out. This has you scrounging up what little cash you have to travel with caravans and makes the prospect of unlocking a car that halves travel time more enticing.
The previous game might have just asked you to use your repair skill to get the car in working order. But Fallout 2 instead has you steal, scavenge, barter, or create the parts necessary to get the car to work, as well as upgrade it.
This trick of an alluring upgrade or weapon requiring the hunt of a specific item is used many times and encourages players to explore and engage with the wasteland far more than usual, as it has you guess what the true value of the items you come across are, as well as forcing you to use skills you might have otherwise neglected.
Well-planned progression really helps make each playthrough of Fallout 2 more unique. A character who has always used their fists to solve problems is going to start out better than a nerd with an obsession with guns, but ultimately brawn for brains is going to have to adapt more to the wasteland as the game progresses.
Fallout 2 is a delight to play just like its predecessor, but the lessons learned from making the first game have made the experience even better this time around. I never felt truly comfortable in this version of the wasteland, unlike the first game where I had acquired enough armaments and health kits to feel somewhat secure. In this depiction of the wasteland, all the wealth and weaponry you acquired means nothing, as a new challenge is waiting around every corner.
????The Story & Presentation????
You play as the Chosen One, a descendant of your character from Fallout. The tribe you live in is dying due to sick children, dying livestock and poor crops. You are tasked with finding Vault 13, which contains a device called the “Garden of Eden Creation Kit”. It is said this device can give life to the dead wasteland and save your village.
Unlike its predecessor, there is no actual time limit, with only the occasional reminder of your quest sent from your tribe. This removes the slight paranoia of the first game that any side quest might mean the difference between overwhelming success and an instant game over, and as such allows you to see far more of the content this time around.
The story of Fallout 2 is just as good as the first, with interesting locations inhabited by well written characters. But the signature bleak and oppressive atmosphere of the first game has been notably toned down, with a camp, action movie style replacing it in this entry. While I do prefer the more dystopian and pessimistic world of Fallout, the charm of Fallout 2’s humour left me smiling with glee.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2516184609
This new style also helps make the game feel far grander in its story. Whereas the first game would have you backtrack to certain locations and was quite self-contained, Fallout 2 is far more experimental, having way more locations, all of which are incredibly varied and unique, as opposed to the constant slums and scrap heaps of the first game.
The long-dead, retro-futuristic America of yesterday still looks great thanks to the stellar art direction still present in this sequel. The 156 years of post-nuclear wasteland have not been kind, with old war buildings and adverts in an even worse condition than before.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2516183417
Character portraits return, and this time most of the companions in the game have portraits as well, making them truly feel like friends at your side or opportunists ready to backstab you at any moment.
????Graphics & Soundtrack????
Graphically, Fallout 2 is the same as the first game, having aged well and giving everything in the world a detailed and weathered look. 80 years may have passed since the first game took place, but the wasteland still looks as desolate and hopeless as ever.
The soundtrack from the first game returns, with some new tracks to help characterize the wild and wonderful new locations, as well as help believably age some recognizable landmarks from the first game. The music still helps add so much to the oppressive atmosphere of the wasteland.
????Performance & Bugs????
Fallout 2 is plagued with bugs. Content my character should have seen was barred to me due to scripting errors, and I had to revert to previous saves on occasion as progression was halted by the game refusing to load important story scenes. One persistent bug was that playing for longer than half an hour meant my game would occasionally slow to the speed of a PowerPoint presentation. All I could do to fix it was restarting the game.
✔️Final Score & Comments????
I would give Fallout 2 a 9/10. Its familiar controls and bold new story help make the second wasteland adventure feel original but at the same time consistent with the first.
What lets the game down is the broken content and constant glitches, which ruin what is otherwise an immersive RPG experience.

It is a good fallout game but Is hard to get the Hang of. It is the hardest fallout game for sure you need to remember to save after every encounter and avoid getting yourself in to trouble. Overall it has a great story ( it gives you a good idea what happens between fallout 1 and 2 in the game Manual )and lots of cool Easter-eggs but the bugs that can happen loading the game up dose take the fun out of it

I was not satisfied, so I shot her brains out with my trusty Desert Eagle.
Owner of that place got pretty mad at me and started throwing punches, so I started doing kicks at his groin until he collapsed at the floor and was not able to move anymore.
Then I took my money back and went outside.
I took some drugs and booze and went on killing spree, killing not just the men but women and children too.
Nobody gave shit about me shooting people, until I went and shot some guy in military gear.
After that I got around 20 guys with guns blazing at me.
My character was wearing some cool ass purple robes and was just dodging bullets like Neo from Matrix.
I was able to kill half of them military guys, until I ran out of bullets, then I got half of my chest blown off by shotgun.

Fallout 2 did not disappoint. Indeed it heavily reinforced my burgeoning fascination with the genre. The two games were extremely similar. They were released only a year apart. They used effectively the same engine, with only minor tweaks. They played virtually the same way, had almost the same model pool and many of the same weapons/items. Yet, they were also very different. Whereas the original focused on delivering a tight story, with a clearly defined progression and a relatively serious tone, the sequel was a rather chaotic pastiche of the original with a much looser progression, a less serious, though still quite adult, tone and a much more overt, darkly satirical side. Truly some of the snappiest, most snarky lines in gaming have been written for Fallout 2. After experiencing the bleakness of the original, a sequel that offered much more of the same great gameplay, but at the same time didn't hesitate to twist and poke fun at its dark world, was just what I needed.
You start on the fringes of post-apocalyptic California, as a member of a primitive tribe that is in dire straits due to a drought. After being tested in a much-maligned, obligatory tutorial level, you are named the chosen one of your tribe and tasked with travelling to the more civilized places of the world in search of technology that will save your people. Of course to the rest of the world that now is opening up before you, your title or the justness of your cause mean nothing. To them, you are just a filthy tribal barely worth a second look, unless, of course, you can be of use to them somehow. This allows the game to poke fun at the chosen one trope, while still playing it mostly straight. Mostly. This meta approach, coupled with lots of leaning on, if not outright breaking, the fourth wall is an integral part of the game's DNA.
It has been pointed out that the main story itself is not particularly strong, especially compared to the first game. Indeed, after you are given your mission and start exploring the wasteland, it is difficult to maintain focus. At best, the main story provides a general direction to follow early on, but after a point even that disappears. This is further reinforced by the lack of any hard time limit. The most flawed part is arguably the final section. It appears to be very rushed and it's one of the few areas where the attempt to follow the example set by the first game falls flat. I'm referring of course to the diplomatic response to the main villain's plans. In the first game, employing diplomacy to resolve the final conflict was gradually built and convincing, indeed it was stellarly executed. Here, it seems like having it as an option was a tick on some checklist. Half-baked, if not outright nonsensical. And only partly effective anyway.
Nevertheless, the main story is hardly at the center of what makes Fallout 2 great. The true highlight of the game is the world that it invites you to explore. The locations that you can visit are very diverse, perhaps even thematically inconsistent, but always compelling. They all showcase the different ways that people have coped with the apocalypse. How they interact with one another. How they are following different government types. From anarchy, to liberal democracy, all the way to technofascism. This allows the game to engage in quite some social commentary. The apartheid state of Vault City being a great example. An important aspect is that the game doesn't usually force you to pick a side, this is something of a lost art these days. The game doesn't force an opinion on what it's showing you. Even when it skewers some ideology with sarcasm, it still leaves it to the player to draw conclusions.
The world is fairly reactive, offering lots of feedback to player choice via its many interesting and well-written subplots. They range from simpler sublots like the Ghost Farm, to more complex ones like the Gecko Power Plant, all the way to a sublot complex enough that it could easily supplant the main plot. Indeed, many a game would wish they had a main plot this good. It is a 3-way power struggle between the leading political entities of the region over trade. The game goes to lengths to explore the realities of each with flair. It allows the player to engage with all three powers but whether they will choose to take a side, or even if they will be given the chance to do so, it's all entirely optional and often a reaction to previous choice.
When Fallout 2 launched, it was really buggy. There was also lots of cut content, much of it described in design documents but not in the game. Certainly a result of how quickly the game was developed. None of this deterred me at the time of course, but I am certainly happy for the numerous patches that followed. Unfortunately, so numerous were those issues that by the time the developer went out of business, though in a much better shape there was still lots to be done. Enter the fans. Thankfully, Fallout 2 has a dedicated community that has given us unofficial patches and even a mod that restores cut content. I recommend checking all that out. Particularly since Bethesda, in their supreme laziness, have done nothing for this game, other than bundling it with some mods and selling it.
Fallout 2 is probably my favourite game of all time. For many years, I would do a full run of the game at least once a year, as sort of a ritual. After a point, always with the Restoration Project installed. Work and the vagaries of adult life haven't allowed me to maintain that in recent years, but I will still do a full run from time to time and it always feels fresh. For fans of old-school RPGs that somehow haven't played this, I can't recommend it enough. For newer players, I'd recommend trying the first Fallout and then this one, emulating my journey with this series. Either way, this is indeed one of the crown jewels of the video game medium and is worth experiencing one way or another.

Things are great, but it ends, and it's painful and then you meet the greatest girl in the world, just someone you adore and want and she wants to be friends then she moves on with her life and says it's not gonna work out.
And then you have a long wait before someone new comes along. Like almost 10 years.
And suddenly you find love again. She's also great, but things aren't 100% right, but man it's nice to see someone again.
But she's not that second girl. You can't stop thinking about her.
And you let go because girl 3 doesn't move you with the music of creation, and you probably break her heart and maybe wish you didn't feel like a monster, but it's worse if you stayed, stringing her on.
And you fear the Lord's finished with you, like there's no good options left.
10 years, you're not getting younger.
And so you just hold on, going to Mass, celebrating and worshiping Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. And it hurts, but deep down you know and feel God doesn't really owe you anything. But it's not living, you feel nothing, no matter those you help and give aid to. The void isn't filled, and the Lord keeps it empty for some reason.
You pray and hope that this isn't the end of your story, but the cynical side of you just knows it's over.
I'm sorry, I lost my train of thought. This game's pretty good. Funny. Witty. Buy it. 10/10

The combat system, though sometimes very luck-dependent, is very satisfying and tactical.. and there is a lot of pleasure to have from it.
But the most fun to have from this game is not from the combat system, rather from its deep story, universe and atmosphere. The world has been devastated by the bombs, civilization has found its way back. From the newly born New California Republic, to the charming city of Klamath, there is so much to do.
The game sincerely and openly allows you to roleplay in any way you want. You can be a gangster, a boxer, an NCR ranger, a slaver, a hunter.. anything! Hell, you can even be a pornstar in this game. There are many endings per city and factions and choices DO matter in this game!
For those who played Fallout: New Vegas, FNV is pretty much the sequel to Fallout 2 and you will find a lot of things that are similar and you will see how loyal New Vegas is to its predecessor. As for those who are new to the Fallout franchise, I would suggest you first start with New Vegas or Fallout 3, as the first two games can be very difficult to get good at, and you might wanna get into the Fallout universe first!
I love it and 100% recommend it!

However, this game isn't for people who dislike unforgiving, punishing combat. It can be slow and clunky (which is understandable, since it's a turn-based RPG). Even on the default difficulty, enemies can randomly crit you and kill you when you're in full power armor. This is not a game for casual gamers who just want to knock out a game in a few hours or so.
When I say the combat and encounters are unforgiving, I mean it. If you're lower level and have lower combat and outdoorsman skills, you will run into encounters constantly that will probably result in death (Enclave patrols, anyone)?
Like I said before, the gameplay is very slow and clunky and can drag on for a while especially at the beginning. There isn't a ton of info on what you can do and where you can go. It doesn't hold your hand.
All of the skills aren't made equal. There are some that you may not ever use or use very little, like Throwing, Gambling, or Traps. Skill and perk progression is pretty slow, although it can be argued that it should be slow to not make the game too easy. Some traits are downright terrible like Kamikaze, Jinxed, Good-Natured, etc. In terms of perks, they're pretty damn good and balanced. Although, I will say Sniper is pretty broken with a high luck stat and a burst weapon. Other perks are of negligible benefit like Cult of Personality (in fact I think it's bugged in the vanilla game), Pathfinder, Presence, Scout, Snakeater, while others are practically essential like Quick Pockets and Awareness.
The game also suffers from a fair amount of bugs like useless perks, save corruption, crashes, and numerous scripting bugs. You can even lose your companions by leaving them in an old map/cell that gets replaced with a new one after a quest. Some exploits exist that can break the game, usually infinite xp bugs. For this reason, I recommend the Unofficial Patch that is bundled with the Restoration Project, although you can get the patch by itself.
One notable quirk of AI behavior is that companions will never take into account of what is in front of them when attacking, so if you give them a burst weapon they WILL kill you with it. So never give them burst weapons.
One last thing that I'm not a huge fan of but can appreciate at times, is the huge amount of pop culture references. There are references from Monty Python to Red Dawn to Star Trek and more.
Sorry for the essay and I doubt people would put much stock in this review, but overall I recommend the game. If you're a fallout fan who has played the newer games I would still recommend this one, as well if you're a fan of classic isometric RPGs and the post-apocalyptic setting. It does take a little bit of extra work to get it optimized to run on modern machines, though (if you're not buying it through Steam or GOG).

That being said, Fallout 2 is an amazing game. Just like the first game, Fallout 2 sees you playing as an apocalyptic wanderer, braving the outside world. Except instead of playing as a vault dweller, you play as an adventurer who is descended from the first game's protagonist. You get to make your character, decide their skills and then go of into the wasteland in search of the Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K.) for your village Arroyo. As you travel through the land, you find a variety of newcomers to the Fallout franchise, such as the Enclave, who are the remnants of the old world government, as well as meeting old factions like the Brotherhood of Steel and the New California Republic. The game is great, and a tremendous amount of fun to play, even if the gameplay is sometimes a bit slow. However, just remember to save often, and if you have a spare drive, maybe just copy your files onto it. Nothing ruins a great game like having to play the same parts over and over again because your STUPID SAVE FILE GOT CORRUPTED!

I recommend at least two runs: first vanilla, then with the restoration project. Personally I don't wanna switch back from the restoration project anymore.

Remember this is a product from the Past.
A Slow game, even when running.
Some improvement over the earlier Fallout One.
Bad graphics, clunky controls, poor item managements, few bugs here and there inbetween storyline triggers,
'should' be expected.
Deep collection of stories, adventure and lore of ' Fallout ' since the first episode.
The Chosen One,
a common thief, always looking into other's pocket, table and lockers,
all because of a small GECK case, embarks on a long and tiresome adventure,
constantly pocking into other's businesses, to be a 'hero', or a 'killer'.
Always make constant manual saves, and save scums, as
even the slightest wrong click, entering, armed or picking the wrong pocket, could ruin your progress.
Game gets extremely hard in the last ten percent, if one isn't prepared as a hoarder of ammo and heals.
In the process of replaying One, Two, and heading to Three next.
Enjoyed the Story,
if one is meticulous in following the lore.

It's the only one that I've started a second play through of after finishing and it actually makes me want to play through NV again.
That's it, that's my review. :)

I also love talking to NPCs... there are a lot of Easter Eggs and fun dialogues, and there's really a lot to do in many different ways, and so much to explore for such an old game.
I would definitely recommend it... it has a high replay value.

The story in this game is god tier.
The combat doesn't feel that outdated. It's easy to pick up but it still remains fun , engaging and challenging many hours after the start of the game.
The only gripe I have with the Steam version of Fallout 2 is the fact that they censored some scenes, but that can easily be fixed by installing the Fallout 2 Restoration Project
(https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout2/mods/13).
The high resolution patch (https://falloutmods.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout_2_High_Resolution_Patch) is also highly recommended if you want to play this game properly in a higher resolution.
Overall , despite its age , this game is still entertaining.

First: do yourself a favor and get the GOG version instead, especially if you're running Windows 10, as the Steam version of Fallout 2 does not play nice with modern operating systems and tends to crash. Often.
Second: it's Fallout 2. You don't need to read reviews. This is one of the quintessential roleplaying games, and one of the defining games in the ever-popular post-apocalyptic genre. Fallout 2 differs a bit from the original game in that it leans a bit more heavily towards the absurd—and can even be campy at times—but it still does an excellent job retaining and furthering the spirit of the original. It's got everything you loved from the first Fallout, dialed up to eleven (for better or worse).
If you're brand new to the Fallout series, I'd strongly advise starting with the first game, as mechanically the two are very similar but the narrative of Fallout 2 is built largely on top of Fallout 1's story. Where Fallout was a post-apocalyptic roleplaying game, Fallout 2 charts new territory as a post-post-apocalyptic roleplaying game. Which is to say that it's less about dealing with the aftermath of the atomic war and more about constructing the new societies, states and cultures in this new, battered and broken world. Where subsequent Fallout sequels are chiefly concerned with the world's past, Fallout 2 (very rightly) concerns itself with the future.
Do keep in mind, however, that Fallout 2 was never a terribly pretty game even it its heyday, and even when it released its UI was fairly clumsy and combat fairly tedious. The visuals and mechanics serve largely as a vehicle for a very reactive sandbox RPG, and are not very well-polished. All the same, Fallout and Fallout 2 are both foundational classics of the genre. If you're fond of RPGs and haven't played Fallout 2, then you really ought to remedy that deficiency as soon as humanly possible.
