Pros
Music - reminds me of mass effect
Colonizing planets is cool, lots of variety of types, unique aspects, and resources
Good variety of factions that function in unique ways
Ship building gives a lot of customization options
Neutral
Growing planets is cool, but also feels weak and limited
Military battle cards create a tactical situation but feels janky and contrived
Customizing your own ships is cool, but maintaining that as you get upgrades is a real pain
Bad
Battles are stupid - long range medium and melee for all ships every time
Lots of quality of life type things are missing that would help to make the game less tedious (upgrading ships)
The game is rather shallow; at first it seems like ample customization options will be at your disposal, but in reality you have very few choices to make. Planets have VERY few upgrades considering that you are governing entire solar systems. Ships only ever have 3 weapon types (you can never get new ones, just better versions of what you already have). It feels more like you are playing on a set of rails instead of having true liberty.
The bad parts completely outweigh the good in my opinion. My immersion was quickly broken and only increased the speed it was going downhill after that moment. I never truly felt like a space Commander forging into the unknown, because it is so obviously manufactured and forced. This is so contrasted with something like Civ 5, where I felt like I was building my civ from the ground up every damn time (even after 400 hours). A space 4x is a great concept, but this one fails to deliver.

(a little note)
There's a story/RPG element that some players will love and others will find tiring pretty quickly. But the game is generally well made, looks great, and is fun. Challenging at the higher difficulties.
I love this game so I can still play this game

-Wish there was more components to build different ships for different purposes, with various types of lasers/rockets/projectiles/armors like I am used to from other similar games.
-ability to create space structures like ring worlds, orbiting space stations etc
All in all a good enjoyable game, just don't think i will be playing it again anytime soon.

At it's heart, this is little more than a colony game, the goal being to out colonize other factions.
Some may argue there is more to it, but I believe they would only further my point.
There is military strategy, so a person can play this as a military sim.. But if one thinks about it, using military might isn't simply to repel borders, but to strip other factions of their resources, i.e planets and minerals etc, leading to further populace, leading into furthering the colonization loop.
If I wanted to outbreed people and convert them to my ideals, I'd have been born anglo saxon.. Coincidentally, I was, and frankly I'm still asking myself what was the point.
The one thing that would make this game interesting (for me) is the presence of cultural exchanges between civilizations and the stories that could come from that.
Since that's lacking, I shall move on to another critique.
Learning how to play this game wiped out approximately three of my real world days, it's not the most intuitive thing out here, and that is despite the tutorial.
Credit where it's due, there was clearly a lot of love, time, energy, and effort put in to making this game, it isn't bad, it just is not for me.

- different planet types stay relevant
- galaxy map is simple
- nice races
- decently nice ship models
Bad things:
- cheating and lame AI. slightly win the war and suddenly you are in cold war, unable to attack them. They however will just gangbang you with 3 way alliances.
- Most of the game you are stuck in the starting area, because some little planet blocks you and you can't invade it unless you wait 40 rounds.
- there are no colonists basically. you invade someone, all the colonists become your guys
- no default combat stategy, always select your 3 phases and targeting by hand
- fleet creation is tedious
- ship equipment tech is boring. it just goes from t1 to t10 or so without any cool names or effects
no laser beams, no ion beams, just kinetic 1, laser 5, missile 8
you are probably better of playing master of orion 3 or endless space 2

And unlike the old school game of this genre, we get to see more actions in 3D and animated graphics and charts making things look more impressive and well, less dull. But still, it's futuristic paperwork imo... lol!
The game has different settings and random generator that makes every game play a different experience. You can easily get addicted and spent tons of time diving and exploring the space trying to learn more lore about each faction and completing their story and quests. And although it's pretty repetitive which makes sadist type of players bored easily, that doesn't mean this game doesn't have something for both the S and M players. With the toying of the settings, Sadist type players can also enjoy a full Bully play and let out their steam and stress on the game opponent. While the masochist type players can do the settings to get pawned by the AI.. It has something for everybody. :3
The lacking part of the game compared to other similar games is the lack of faction only heroes imo, in this game, the heroes are rather randomly recruited from the Academy and none of they are allied or even related to their original faction. Unlike other strategy games that allows trading/capturing/head hunting heroes from various other factions, this game lack the fun of this part of the strategy play. Heroes are randomly generated and everyone gets them equally no matter their origins.
The advantages of the game is probably the Mods, means there's an endless possibilities with mods so once you are done with the game and wanted more, there's always the mods.
For those who are new to the Endless Universe... Here's a small reference on what their games are about:
Endless Space 1&2: The Big picture, you conquer the star systems, colonize new planets and expand your empire. Strategy Management Game that's pretty hard on the paperwork.
Endless Legend: In this series you get to see what's actually happening on the surface of the planets. Strategy civilization building game that's the most common genre for Strategy games.
Dungeon of the Endless: In this series, you are INSIDE the planet trying to escape the dungeon to reach the surface after a crash emergency landing on your escape pod. Tower Defence (turn based) + Dungeon Crawler type game play.
Love Thyself - A Horatio Story: In this series, you are INSIDE the mind of one of the resident (clone) of the Horatio empire, you get a good view of what's inside in first person view point. Visual Novel type game play with love story.
So it's up to you to decide which you like best and suits your play style best, but might eventually ended up trying all of them just to get a view of how the Endless Universe looks like from different perspective.

However, while I do recommend this game, I have to say that as of right now; DO NOT BUY IT HERE.
The developer, Amplitude Studios, provides this game FREE to anyone who registers on their website and syncs their Steam account.
Their website being games2gether.com
Feel free to confirm this elsewhere if you think this is fake.

The Factions are not balanced at all. Some are way better than others.
Map generation can decide victory. If you have a bad starting area that's isolated from the rest of the map due to wormholes, you're just screwed and may as well restart.
The AI gets a big raw numbers advantage over you even in Normal difficulty to pose a challenge, rather than making smart decisions. The advantage is so drastic that it can seem like it's cheating. Maybe it does cheat?
It's also just generally a boring game. Events have almost no flavor text, combat is a card game that has rock paper scissors elements so it's partly RNG, and most of your turns are just spent waiting for research or construction to finish.

I have absolutely zero idea how to play it.
I literally just bumrush sciences and colonies and it works out somehow.
Pick it up if you are capable of having an attention span, because I'm not, apparently.

It's a rather pretty game with atmospheric music. It's rich in content with backgrounds of all the factions, descriptions of different kinds of planets, explanations of the different technologies, bios for different hireable heroes and so on. The popup tutorials, while a little invasive, are nevertheless thorough about what all the different controls and indicators are for.
Not too happy with the fleet-to-fleet combat. If it was less involved, it would compare to Stellaris and simply happen. If it was more involved, it could be like Sins of a Solar Empire and be fun to watch. What it is more resembles a game of Rock Paper Scissors Snake Spock (look it up), except time-consumingly cinematic.
Some things I didn't understand, like why my robotic faction's societal happiness suddenly plunged to zero one turn, causing all my workers to go on strike. Perhaps there is some nuance to the faction that I didn't grasp.
All told, for the current Steam price of $10, one could do much worse, if one is into strategic space conquest games.

The UI and controls are very simple and easy to pick up, allowing the player to spend more time figuring out strategy and mechanics, and less time looking up keybindings.
The settlement and colonization rules in the beginning of a game will determine success or failure through their massive impact on resource production. Unhappy systems mean less revenue, population, and military production.
The combat and fleet systems are fascinating, with veteran units and admirals determining the success or failure of battles and the survivability of fleets.
Diplomacy is also a very well developed part of the game, wherein every action, especially later in a game, will determine what courses are available to you. You may be crippled midway through a war by a hasty agreement or alliance, or you could gain a powerful ally to secure an unguarded frontier.
In all, I would highly recommend Endless Space to anyone who wants to dive into an endlessly variable and complex game that has everything from massive fleet engagements to the destruction of an empire through nothing but sheer political and economic domination.

ES1 has one of the best and easy to navigate in game UI. Zoom in and out thru any menu. One thing these devs nailed versus numerous other games I have played.
Combat is meh but when I'm bored with earth based games and need a sci-fi fix, this game is my choice. I play the second one more, just out of convenience. I still feel ES1 is better overall even though ES2 has more improvements. Something about the first one flows better, I suppose the research is what I like better. I would suggest this one over ES2 but either fits the need.

It's a fun space 4x mostly notable for having a very simple and straightforward UI. Which normally wouldn't be very notable at all, but have you see the 4x genre? Unfortunately there seems to be little reason to play Endless Space, as by all accounts its successor, the surprisingly-named Endless Space 2, does everything this game does, but better.
