There are a few bad things for example, I didn't really enjoy the naval battles personaly it just didn't make sense to me so I would just avoid them or auto resolve. Second, there is no united states i this game. I am from the united states and this game takes place right after/during the revolution. I think it would be good if the would let you be the thirteen colonies and then try to rise into the United States but if you know how you can get Darth mod which is one of the mods I use along with the American revolution mod. All in all this is a very good to me and to me it defines the stratagy genre with its beautiful stratagy and very well developed game. If you are looking for a stratagy game or are big into this time period I would get this ASAP

It does have a couple of minor bugs in comparison to most games in the series, which function better. For example, troops manning (cannons on) the walls have some small issues with their waypoints and such.
Definitely recommend this game. I am playing a campaign right now in 2022 and other then the older lighting and graphics it's a perfect 10/10.

Chads talk about Empire and Napoleon.
I love Empire but it’s still a buggy mess. It’s really CA’s worst job yet, they never patched it much and there is no way to make it 100% stable.
Still a great game though but you really need to accept what a cluster fuck it is.
Napoleon is mechanically better in every single regard but the campaign map is very linear compared to the awesome one of Empire.
Make sure to use Darthmod to make the game better. Bran Mac Born’s AI also add a lot of improvements. You can use both mods together for a greatly more rewarding experience. It’ll still be a pretty shitty game, but also pretty cool at the same time.
Empire II would be pretty awesome about now CA.

how shall I say?
I always keep this game loaded so that I can access the atmosphere, the songs, the era any time I want. With mods without mods. The color of the map, the grass the sound of speaking woman all like a lullaby for me. Nations at their finest, possibilities of the game. AI is dead for today, also gameplay is not great but I play this game since I was a child, now I am on the age of having child. Still playing this game among other Total War series. And will play. Wish Sega would make a new game similar to this age/era. I would definetely pre-order it. Like Empire Total War II, Bismark, Victoria etc. But not like Napoleon, with other continents and lots of nations, and plus the diplomacy options. Ahh, even dreaming is great. I think there is a huge community waiting for that game, I don't know but long time no see from Total War series that we can play something like Empire.
Even a remaster is good with coop campaign mod with enhanced diplomacy options and AI :)

One of the biggest additions in Empire Total War was the inclusion of playable naval battles. As this was the era of major permanent fleets came into existence, it’s a welcome addition due to the nature of cross Atlantic action for the time period.
The only real downside in my experience was in a poorly optimized AI, with the AI completely failing to understand the ramifications of its foreign service along with the AI not being the most optimized for the era of gunpowder as the ai leaves units exposed to be fired at by the players line infantry.
Overall, Empire Total War is a natural expansion into the universe with the game being the first to tackle the issue of a rapidly shifting period of warfare and while not perfect, does a good job at showing how the era’s technology played a decisive role in battle, mixed with the Total War Formula. Empire Titian War is a game worth trying.

Naval Battles - 4/5
Campaign - 4/5
Atmosphere - 5/5
DLC - 5/5
- I started with the later TWs so I was sceptic of this one. But now I can honestly say, that it is one hellova' good Total War. Classic, historical, tactical. No superhero bulsh*t. If you like Shogun 2, Rome II and Attila, don't be affraid to try this one out. I have to say that the great classic, Medieval II, was too old for me, in terms of controlls, but this one handles exaclty like the new ones.
- Great campaigns, all of them. My only problem with it was that there are only two turns per year, thus only two seasons. Other than that, I cannot say anything bad about it. I really enjoyed the fact that I could send fleets throughout the world and fight for the control of the seas. (Because naval battles are really good here.) I really like the flavour events, that described new inventions or new compositions by famous artists, and their backgrounds throughout the years. It really completes the atmosphere of the age of inventions.
The Warpath campaign is a bit emptier, but the native americans are very different from other nations in game and make for a nice change of approach in tacticks.
- Battles are nicely ballanced and work pretty well. The AI is sometimes a bit dumb when the enemy is overwhelmed but it can be pretty darn challenging too. The naval battles are trully awesome. It is difficult to get used to how they controll, but it is equaly as rewarding. Taking into accout wind directions and precisely timing your cannon shots. Not at all like the newer ones, where you just board enemy ships and wait. They are engaging and fun to play.
- Historical battles are fine. Some are more interesting then others. They are named scenarios here, and there are also historical battles of american revolution at the beginning and end of every American campaign. Again, some are better then others.
A great game.

Takes a bit of time to get used to but i find it a very fun game to play, a notch more technical than Civilization, a notch less than EU IV (i bounced hard on that one, more times).
Fun to plot on map, very fun to fight on land; i find sea fight boring, but i set the right quantity of navies and autoresolve.
I have installed two mods that made this game nice to see in 2020 (ultrawide screen made fonts really small) and much more fun: Ultima_Ratio_Black_Label and DarthMod; they're heavy mods but are a must.

But I only like it because of the strategy mode and the tactical battles are just a burden. I try to not use auto-resolve because it often gives you much more casualties than if you actually play the battle.
So, why I don't like the battles - the soldiers are incredibly dumb. And I'm not talking about people with muskets just standing in front of each other shooing one shot per minute - maybe that's historically accurate. But in this game they really act weird so you have to micromanage to avoid a disaster - friendly fire is a common thing. Just some examples - you send a missle cavalry unit after a routing enemy (which doesn't resist), but they happen to shoot themselves so you lose like 15-20 men out of 45 for nothing. Or a cannon shoots a canister shot right at your own infantry unit killing like 40 men and making them flee. Or those cannons shooting canister even when the enemy is not in range (you have to manually switch the ammo type). When you tell a cannon to cease fire, it will shoot 1-2 more times, in some cases leading to deaths of your soldiers.
Sieges are even more frustrating. For example, you capture a wall and your soldiers stand on it looking directly at the enemies inside the city. You think it's a good way to shoot them? Nah, no shooting will take place unless you come down. Also, even when you capture a castle gate, it often doesn't let your people through so they just stand near the closed gate doing nothing.
Sea battles are quite nice, though. And the battle music! It makes them not so painful, after all.
Anyway, in terms of good stuff, the strategy mode is quite enjoyable. There are three regions, Europe and the colonies in America and India. If you play a long campaign, it's perfectly possible to capture everything in the game, unlike, say Europa Universalis where you have to try really hard. And the game is not overcomplicated. The diplomacy is pretty simple, so is trade (I don't really understand how trade works but it still brings money). There are techs, buildings, hiring of units, agents like missionaries and rakes, so there is plenty to do but it doesn't give me headaches like EU4 (I used to play it a lot but then it got too complex and I don't have time for that anymore).
The graphics are pretty outdated and the interface is too small in higher resolutions with no scaling, keep that in mind. So a new version of Empire would have been nice.

It's amazing & terrible at the same time. Empire & Napoleon are the most historically modern total wars, filling the gap between Medieval 2, & Shogun 2, & it really shows.
It's definitely more ambitious than either, & that's the trouble. This game's vision was too far ahead of its time.
It offers the largest (in a very special way) of all the total war maps, in that it covers most of the world (again, in a very special way) in 1700. The tech research is also unique in that you have to build universities & send researchers to them. I liked that personally.
This game introduced ship battles for the first time, & cannon & rifles/ranged fire as the main form of fighting over melee.
Where the game falls down is the poor AI, path finding issues, unrealistic battles, & bugs.
Darthmod goes a long way to making this game more playable, but as I said, mixed feelings.
I'd guess they packed in about 70% of a great game & had issues with the rest.
Empire 2 may or may not happen, but it would be absolutely amazing to see the vision of this game's developers properly realized.

While at its core Creative Assembly was still MTW2's old crew, many - including the battle mechanics programmer - went away mid development. This disorganization coupled with absurdly placed goals and SEGA's demands, created the perfect storm. Empire Total War is the result of a small studio being acquired by a greater entity and put on a forced march towards glory; they needed to literally touch the Sun, and just like Icarus, they failed and landed on their head back to Earth.
Up until mid 2011 - release was March 2009 - the game was borderline unplayable. For well over 2 years musketeers wheeling into the foreground with no AI, terrible campaign crashes, endless loading times, and a plethora of bugs and glitches made the experience awful. But the scope and the novelty of such an endeavour still attracted masses of casuals and the most hardcore groups of exploiters went on to form elite squads of competitive ETW gamers. I was in one too at the time, an international competitive group with a strong German presence. For almost 3 years we got together every week to ruin everyone's fun because winning in this game was - and still is - totally based on exploits. Units have godawful balancing, the speed and impact of all cavalry is all over the place; you can place 2 rows of light cavalrymen behind your infantry and have 3 volleys of instant fire that WILL destroy any unit present beside Guards. If you were a newbie, or even an intermediate player, you'd be completely screwed in a competitive setting, and even at a casual level, the amount of exploits was so atrocious you'd be a winner even in a 2 v 1 secnario just because you'd be making a 10 Guards 10 Artillery army and flood people with mortar fire. Ragequitting was the norm for everyone. Netcode has always been awful to the core. The few people that still play it in MP know every nook and cranny and can destroy anybody with a thought because all of these incredibly frustrating balancing choices are still there.
The SP side isnt any better tho. AI is an absolute mess of convoluted nonsense. Coding and optimization of the campaign map and battle maps is so bad that it hurts even modern PCs.
MP campaign was in development and testing phase but again, since this mess of a game came out rushing in through the door with at least 1 year of development left in the dumpster, the few lucky ones able to actually play any game got crashes upon crashes and loading a saved game even with perfect syncing would result in freezes as soon as you'd press the end turn button.
There is STILL an unavoidable, random crash in the Ottoman's turn after 11 years. Never patched, never fixed. The last patch they applied in 2011, while stabilizing the game a bit, completely destroyed the first person camera's coding. You cannot view the bullet trajectory anymore, not from muskets nor from cannons. The game just freezes mid-air.
Switzerland was planned and half finished in the code, but you cant enable it back. Pieces of development tools never given to the public were also half finished and thrown in the dumpster, waiting to be released only in late 2012 for Shogun 2.
I spent an ungodly amount of hours playing this game. I enjoyed it, but I wouldnt recommend it to anyone. It was amazing the first time I put my eyes on it back in 2009, and the few years I went nuts with all the exploits and a crew of dedicated companions to fight with. But now.... no, absolutely not. This game has been abandoned and left in a sorry state for a decade, the only thing keeping it somewhat alive are mods, and even those cant pull its butt up from the ground. There's no sendoff, no fanfare, and there never will be. The creators didnt love their baby enough, and put their necks on a yoke in servitude of SEGA's ambitions. There is no pity, nor remorse in here. Naiveté got their hands in the dirt. Few years later, with Rome 2, they'd prove themselves to be in the same situation. But that is a story for another time.

The game is set in an age that I am very interested in. The age of geographic and technological exploration and discovery.
The inclusion of detailed tactical sea battles with tall sail sail ships is fascinating and requires consideration of tactics and maneuvers that no longer apply in modern naval warfare. Like the critical use and consideration of WIND direction!
