Overall = 5/10
A Max Payne clone with you fighting against the drug trade in South America, but with none of the character, style or polish. The story’s bare-bones and the gameplay and graphics are basic and dated with flickering shadows, but it’s got plenty of shooting, action and explosions. It’s very short, but does have a good of levels in different settings, but the weapons, enemies and bosses are all very similar. The slow motion mechanic is a bit clunky to use and the music isn’t great and fades/skips in and out randomly, but it’s still fun and a perfect palate cleanser, even with its shortcomings.

In conclusion, fix the fps with the help of processor lasso and it is worth to play through.

Mom: No, we have Max Payne at home
Max Payne at home:
Even all things considered, I feel like this game is way inferior in comparison to Max Payne in every way, shape and form. Don't get me even started on the fact you literally have to get a 3rd party software just to run the game in more than 5 fps. It could've been a great competitor to Max Payne, no doubt, but the developers didn't really bother to elaborate on many things. I mean the story is there and the gameplay wouldn't be half as bad if it wasn't so buggy. Overall, I can't recommend the game to anyone, the only thing you'll be left with is disappointment, glad that I didn't buy it when I was a child.

Gameplay-wise, enemies often seem to have x-ray vision, being able to see where you are even at a distance. Completing a level can be reduced to memorising each person's location, but the feeling you get upon finishing one this way can be oddly satisfying. The guns all sound and look great, and enemy deaths are particularly gory and well-detailed.
The graphics of El Matador have aged pretty badly. Honestly, I always figured despite buying this not long after release that the game looked far older than its actual age. The environment in particular has an overall rather blocky feel to it. The soundtrack is good, but some of the voice acting could use a little work. There's too much emphasis on making certain characters sound South American, and it tends to simply come off as rather cheesy.
Time to complete is roughly 15 hours, with no achievements due to age. El Matador might be worth a peek if found via a bundle, but otherwise I'd skip it. There are far nicer titles around now for this to be anything beyond a curiosity.

BUT if you commit yourself to work a little bit to run it then you'll discover what is in my opinion a hidden gem
It's a Max Payne clone with a cheesy story and characters. The guns feels good and have decent feedback, shooting dudes is satisfying and the gameplay is REALLY FAST PACED (even more so than Max Payne in my opinion) It throws at you a ton of enemies and you can complete whole levels without even stopping running and shooting once.

But the game barely runs at 30FPS and I haven't found a way to fix it.
At some points it runs fine, 60+ FPS, and then in situations that are less demanding on your hardware it barely runs. Perhaps this game just doesn't work well on Windows 10 and modern hardware, because I shouldn't have any trouble playing this game at max and at least a constant 60FPS.
Because of the issues running this game, I can't recommend it. If it ran well, it would've been perhaps at least some mindless fun, but with all these issues. Well it just isn't fun.

There are some really fun levels here and there, But the AI is pretty much braindead most of the times, only shooting from cover and exposing themselves to be filled with bullets. The FOV is absolutely trash, and my back hurts from having to keep close to the screen to see where people were shooting from. I didn't find any FOV down solutions, only up the default. Sorry but I'm not here for some Quake frags.
The visuals are really good, would say they still look fairly enjoyable. It has that very mid 2000s PC game feel to it, when developers were having fun with physics, shaders and of course, tons of dynamic shadows.
Bullet time feels like a cheap version of Max Payne 2's. Don't really consider playing this like that most of the times, you'll just die before you can even find cover again. Story is very... confused. There's even one point you end up in some nazi's lair with a museum of WW2 memorabilia and some ''aryan'' dialogue, which felt really out of place in a game about some DEA psycho cop shooting drug lords at every corner. Finale is also really underwhelming, middle of the game fights had more drama and higher stakes than the actual end.
There's a mod on moddb that I used for the last 2/3 levels of the game, that promised better FOV and improved AI. I ended up installing it because the FOV was driving me insane but I thought improved AI would be cool too - FOV was still trash, but the AI actually proved a challenge with it. Unfortunately, this only helped to highlight how bad the bullet time mechanics are.
However, it is quite a fun little thing if you pick it off heavily discounted (as I have) and you want to just shoot some cartels up with tons of physics objects, ragdolls and cool environment sets. Leave the story expectations at your doorstep, and maybe, if you've exhausted other more enjoyable options (such as Max Payne 2, Total Overdose, hell even Hotline Miami and so on...) and you're desperate for anything like these, then this is an option, I guess.
Expected more of the game, but eh, could be a lot worse. TLDR, pick on a sale if you don't have any other games about shooting bad guys up in slow motion. Don't expect an unforgettable game - I'm already starting to forget it.
Oh, and here's that mod I talked about. Try it out if you think the AI is too pathetic.

First of all, you should know that this is a low budget game you can get for $0.60 on sales.
Putting that in mind, El Matador isn't a bad game, but not a great one either.
It's Max Payne in Columbia and it has the exact same gameplay and mechanics.
The problem is that this game didn't innovate anything from there and just kept the same formula.
This game would be more interesting if it has stealth mechanics for example, but it's just mindless action.
- Graphics are great for its time, and the music is good too.
- Story isn't bad, and I can see the devs really wanted to make El Matador with a good narrative.
- El Matador sometimes can be really hard but good thing there's a quick save feature like Max Payne so you don't repeat long sections as you die a lot.
Should you buy it? If you like Max Payne and want something less-AAA then go ahead.
