This game is right up in my alley. 10/10
If you enjoy open world exploration games with great aesthetics and visuals, you will certainly enjoy this game like me.

Pros:
- You can walk wherever you like. The game is not quest-bounded.
- You can spam your F12 key until it breaks, and your hard disk will be filled with tons of breathtaking views.
- There is a fishing minigame. You can already tell it's a good game.

Cons:
- Some minor bugs when using fast travel. Remember to do manual save regularly.

Overall a very enjoyable game. Would definitely launch again every now and then for some relaxing adventures.

As a casual gamer, this game drew me in time and time again with its captivating beauty and easy-to-do quests. There is no time pressure to finish anything and the discovery can be at my own pace. I would say that though there are some aspects of the game that can be made less frustrating in terms of quest completion, the game did leave me satisfied every time I return to it. 10/10 will recommend to anyone who appreciates the aesthetics and exploration aspects of a game

Such a wonderful game! I loved exploring the island, making friends with the characters and of course, painting! Everything looked beautiful and the voice acting is so good, everyone had a unique voice and personality which I found very appealing.

I was genuinely sad when all I had left to do was board the ship and leave all my new friends, and I was slightly emotional at the very end when [spoiler] they sent me letters! [/spoiler]

Thank you for a wonderful game, I will be thinking of it for a long time.

I wish there was a way to experience this game for the first time again. Coming into this carefree, fantastic world of color and discovery completely got me addicted. There is SO MUCH to do and see, fun characters to meet and great places to visit and paint! There's something so familiar with this game, and still it's unlike anything I've played before. I'm glad I found it.
If you loved the game, be sure to check out the short prequel as well!

Beautiful visuals, great voice acting, and since there is no over-arching story, you essentially write your own story. You can wander for hours and walk off the beaten path and paint every nook and cranny you see or go help people in the city, your choice! It's a great stress reliever and perfect for those who just want to unwind. I highly recommend this game!

There's a lot to like- it's very pretty and sweet, but honestly I spent far too much time trying to work around (occasionally game-breaking) bugs. I might recommend it if it were still being updated, but it isn't okay in a finished game. I also found the sound balance to be pretty off, especially the voices, but this was a minor niggle that I'd have overlooked if I hadn't had to restart twice due to serious issues.

I'm VERY sad to write this review as the game is beautiful and brilliant and ticks all the boxes for me. However, there are known bugs with saving the game causing players to lose hours of progress, sometimes without even knowing it (this is what happened to me). The game hasn't been updated in 2 years, despite the known issues. I have requested a refund.

This game was such a good game. There is so much to enjoy, and the graphics and music is beautiful, it's such a calming yet enjoyable game. And there are so many characters and small stories that you can discover and complete, it really all comes together to build a lovely story and world. I would consider it a quick play either (say 4 to 6 hours) - I finished it at 21 hours, but I definitely took my time and enjoyed it as I played. Even if you played quickly, I would still imagine it to take over 10 hours to complete. Definitely worth the money in my opinion!
Would definitely recommend!

This is not really my type of game and I'm not sure why I bought it but so glad I did. taken me like 3 years after buying to play it.

Game is beautifully rendered imo and very colourful. Has plenty of quests to keep you going and thinking, with a great story line. Soundtrack is great too.

Kinda sad when I finished it.

Fully recommend it for a chilling gaming experience. If you try it out, take your time and enjoy it. It's worth it.

Quests, quests, QUESTS!

I'm genuinely surprised how long this game turned out to be.
It starts with a small town section: missions are short and can be done in minutes e.g. find 3 feathers and sell them, paint an inn visitor and offer a painting, speak with a child.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764450470
But as you continue delving further into the island, the objectives become longer, require preparations, some choices lead to new places and etc-etc.

Missions are linked!
You want to explore at nights? Because a lot of activities are done during dark hours. Get a coat!
Can't buy the warm cloths? Earn money doing other errands.
Or say you signed up for 12 paintings. 1 can be access only after 3-4 other missions are done. Another is in far north region. Cave picture is directly connected with the story goal, for which you need to buy another equipment. Hehe, long journey awaits!
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764451251
Softlocks exist.
There are at least two missions which can get bugged.
You found a box and mistakenly gave it to a theif? This mission is locked now!
Rescued a father before sending his kids to a shelter? This mission is locked too!
Denied the invitation of the First Folk? You've lost a trophy!
Press a wrong button in the detective section? Bye-bye another achievement! (save files fix that!)

Crafting
Ah, the collection of junk, sticks and flowers. These needed for story progression, collectibles and exploration. From mushrooms and weeds you brew teas (if you want fast-travel ability), sticks and roots for building boats and tent (waiting for specific hours NPCs and reaching far lands), or just pick everything on the ground to sell later.

Nice view, though!
Who needs Crysis or Horison Zero Dawn, when you can observe eclipse, wonder in flowerly forest, go fishing or ride a boat, air balloon, even bicycle?!

Eastshade is like a peaceful walk through someone else's life. Relaxing, beautiful, sometimes challenging. The personalities, conversations, and general atmosphere are what made this game great. I like that the society is animorphic beings with their own unique cultures. If you want to kick back and enjoy some beautiful scenery on a long, exciting walk, this is the game for you. <3

I played though the whole game in 15 hours. I would highly recommend it. It is a relaxing wholesome game with amazing visuals and characters.

[Theme]
The world building is great. I like the renaissance theme, there is not a lot of technology in this world yet, and anthropomorphic inhabitants are living a simple life. It is also interesting that the world does not revolve around the player, and you can imagine townsfolk living their daily life without your intervention. There are a lot of characters you can talk to, and all of them have great voice over. The quality of the production is very surprising, given the small team in the credits.

[Wholesomeness]
This game is for both kids and adults, the themes are safe and it explores the venue for games that are not violent, more accessible, and still engaging. A lot of themes are wholesome in this game. As an artist, you are taking some time to find inspiration, take a breath and enjoy the view. You are helping a lot of characters with their struggles. You are exploring the world, and leaving it better than it was before you. Choices in dialogs and quests allow you to be true to your morals. Will you pluck the engaged plant to make some tea? Will you hide the truth to gain some money? Will you catch the fish and let it go?

[Graphics]
The environment looks gorgeous and detailed, as expected from a game about an artist painting landscapes. Different biomes are represented with care. Snowy mountains, caves, fields, ocean, rivers, town architecture - everything is memorable and is accompanied by matching and beautiful music. I liked the scale of the island, it was very easy to navigate, and there was no empty or boring place. The details were stunning: butterflies, small critters in the forest, fireflies, mist from falling water, sparkly sand, waves, colorful foliage that reminded me of alpine mountains, fallen trees, uneven forest floor filled with stones, sticks, branches that feel natural.

[Quests]
Quests very very enjoyable and not tedious (e.g. gather and bring X items, although some quests required materials). I liked how some quests from different characters were interlinked, you first figured out one side of the story, and then another.

[Accessibility]
I liked how accessible this is as well. You can save anytime. There is no element of survival, horror, or violence in this game - you are expected to enjoy the island in a peaceful manner. The game is not, however, just simple 'click to proceed', you need to manage your quests, remember what you wanted to do, and figure out some easy puzzles. Even if you make a mistake, there is no punishment and you can try again.

[Design]
- I liked how developer limited player's movement in a very organic way - before you have a specific way to travel, e.g. boat, you can't cross into further parts of the game. This allowed me to focus on what goals I have right now and plan for the future. I was able to experience the whole island with my two feet before I was given an opportunity to 'fast travel'.
- Speaking of organic way to introduce mechanics, a lot of mechanics were based on something existing in the world. E.g. 'fast traveling' was enabled by drinking specific tea. 'Fast forwarding time' was enabled via learning how to build a tent and sleeping. 'Moving faster' was enabled by purchasing a bike and using it like you would use in real life. Even riding a bike had different feel than for example walking. And you would not be able to interact with items while you are on a bike, which made sense and was natural. Even the part where the bike would be left standing while you talk with a character was great. In order to get the map you were required to actually find a map merchant. You were not able to use the minimap and needed to figure the path on your own based on landmarks. This was a nice way to increase immersion.
- As a player, I always felt progression - in the beginning, I was not able to stay the night due to extreme cold, was not able to travel too far, but gradually I learned about the ways of how I could improve and planned towards it. I liked that I saw the end goal right away - to paint 4 paintings of different locations. The quest tracking was simple and easy to follow.
- Painting system overall was very pleasant, I especially liked doing commissions and figuring out where should I go to paint what was requested. It was interesting how painting a correct item would result in a completed quest - since you could complete commission in different ways: if you are asked to paint a sand beach, where would you go, what angle would you choose? I marveled when I painted something correctly every time.
- Number of features in the game was astounding - boating, fishing, painting, brewing, crafting, and more, honestly it is amazing that such a small team managed to output so much.
- I can't say I am a big fan of inspiration mechanic, since at one point I was limited in how many paintings I can create and needed to travel around to up my number. I think if there were more easy ways to increase inspiration that were clear to the player, that would make it much easier. For example, there was a musician I could listen to to gain inspiration, but if listening to any musician would gain inspiration that would be better. Or drinking tea, or having a good rest. Overall, it was not a huge deal, but I felt like I wanted to paint more than I was given resources for!

[How I learned about it]
I was looking at games similar to Forgotten City, that has a lot of characters, quests, and is not violent. I can say now that yes, while you are not expected to resolve one huge mystery, these two games are very similar.

[Time played]
It took me a bit more than 3 evenings, so about 15 hours. Review might say that I have 2 hours, but that is because I played it on my partner's account. I decided to purchase it for myself as well to support developers. I must say this time is ideal for me, with larger AAA games I lose track of what I was doing and forget how to play if I don't play a week. This duration is optimal I think, especially if you are generally busy and don't have a lot of time on your hands.

[Bugs]
I must say that this game was so enjoyable that I tend to overlook the bugs since even with them it is very worthwhile.
- However, the biggest pet peeve for me was not being able to save multiple saves, which would ensure I had a working save if anything broke. I recommend making backups on your own. I have made a system just for this game: the saves are generally stored in this location C:Users[user_name]AppDataLocalLowEastshade StudiosEastshade under Manualsave.BIN. I made another folder to store backups of the saves and copied saves there.
- Major bug: One of the bugs did not allow me to finish one quest at all, which was a pity. I tried to paint a painting during the quest Chorus of the Night and after reloading my save the NPC was gone.
- Normal bug: During fishing my pole got stuck and I was not able to put it back into inventory. Thankfully, this is resolved if you close the game and open it again. Another bug I have encountered is when I did quests in the order that prevented me from getting an achievement Family Reunited. The quests were completed successfully however. Which is not a big deal.
- Small bug: There was a minor bug with crafting where items that you had in stock were not updated right away and you needed to click on other item icon to renew it.
Overall, I think even with these bugs, the game is pretty stable and very playable.

[Conclusion]
I really don't have anything to wish for in this game. I hope that developer will make more games! All parts of the game: art direction, game design, sound, animation, and interaction - they were all top notch. I recommended this to a few of my friends, and it is definitely worth the price!

If your favorite part of Skyrim is just roaming around, picking flowers and doing miscellaneous favors for people, this game is excellent. It has a few kinks here and there (items glitching out, fishing mechanics never actually being explained, quests giving updates out of order), but overall it's really nice. By the end of it I'd grown so attached to Eastshade I was sad to leave. You can tell a lot of love went into this game.

I'm only a couple of hours into this but already I can see this will be my go to game when I need to wind down and relax.
It's absolutely beautiful and I really love that's it's slow and self paced. I just wander around and look at the scenery and talk to other characters.
It's a nice break from games that need lots of thinking or have lots of action happening all at once.

I think the game is stunning, the quests (the few I managed to do) were interesting. However, if you suffer from any kind of motion sickness, this game is almost impossible to play.

Overall, I would recommend it to people who don't have that issue.

Don't get this game, at least not until they fix the game reset bug, whenever that is. Trust me, you do not want to put hours into a walking simulator and end up dying (without being able to save the game at all) and losing all of your progress.

An amazing experience, relaxing and inspiring ! Both is possible, walking around and enjoy the landscape, the conversations, the varying of the sky (night and day changes are part of the game)... or pacing along and do your quests.
Only one negative point: some quests need to be done in a certain order, or you cannot achieve, what you need (e.g. Family Reunion works only, when the quests are done in a fixed order, which you cannot know, when playing blind)

I have spent many hours in Eastshade and love it to go back, just to relax.
Highly recommended!

This is such a beautiful and magical game, I was incredibly sad when it was over. I just didn't want to leave this world!
I had so much fun being a travelling painter, getting to know all these different people, exploring fantasy nature and cities, and just... vibing, you know! :D

Eastshade is an aesthetically pleasing game. A world full of adventure awaits. The Anthropomorphic beings create a mystifying atmosphere across the lands of Lyndow and Nada. Paintings beautifully capture the lush surroundings and organic structures. The quests and tasks ahead are immersive and delves the player deeper throughout the world.

The games performance is hindered with some unoptimized culling and excessive amounts of entities in the world. Unfortunately some look directions cause frame drops because of the objects in view. Other than that the game is very much playable. (Running an RTX 3070)

A nice relaxing game, very scenic. Liked the interaction with characters, sometimes would have like to have more options with some of the characters. Did play for 39 hours but some of this was due to wanting to complete all the achievements, the candle thief took me the longest lol. A good game to chill out with, not very complicated, would have been nice if some things were harder but all round a nice game.

I really wanted to give a positive review to this game. The graphics and music are magnificent, the world building is interesting, and it's overall a relaxing experience. However, the game has several annoying bugs, mostly in the save/load functionality, that prevent me from enjoying it fully. I really hope they will be fixed someday, so I can change my review.

Wonderful! A beautiful relaxing game.
However, the mission system is a little awkward compared to the great graphics. It takes a lot of patience, otherwise you get stuck and can't go to the next place. One note for beginners, don't draw paintings that you do not need. Painting requires inspiration and resources that are limited at the beginning of the game. You have to reserve some for the missions to earn money. I don't think I was the only person got stuck in the first toll bridge. So It seems not a free painting generator as I wish, but anyway, meandering around itself is very pleasant.

Neat little adventure puzzle game in a beautiful setting. Not much direction is given - you wash up on shore and walk into town, from there its up to you. Theres no combat to worry about, no jump scares, just exploration, lite puzzles, and a couple of dialogue choices where you can be nice or a dick.

There is a bit of linear progression locked behind gates / tolls / rafts, but for the most part you are free to explore how you like. Visually the game looks great, but technically I found the walk speed far too slow, the camera too zoomed in, and issues with textures and characters popping in

If you like old fashioned adventures with dreamlike atmosphere à la Myst, puzzles and riddles to solve, this is probably the game for you. But don't expect 2020-level graphics and animations. Also, the characters are the most naive I've seen in years. It brings me back to some early adventure games of the 90s.
Also, this is the first game ever that makes me MOTION SICK. There is definitely something wrong with the way the camera moves. I turned on the dot at the center of the screen, that may help with motion sickness, they say. But no luck.
I went through most of the game out of curiosity, and to see the scenery that is undoubtedly fascinating. But I cannot honestly recommend it.

Sorry, but this just wasn't for me. And sadly at 3.3h play time i can't get a refund.
The game doesn't suck you in like other 'walking simulators' do. The vanishing of ethan carter, the beginner's guide, firewatch, kona, the stanley parable, dear esther, gone home.... these are my favorite games and they are 'walking simultors'.

This however, is a postcard taking simulator. You get 'locked' from moving forward until you get the right painting to the right client, and quite frankly the process is really tedious. You'd think a painter would carry the right tools at all times, but they have to obtained first.

If the gfx were out of this world, it might have been compelling. But they are just passable. Character model and voices are sub par. The story is passable at best.

Thumb down for me.

A cute little game, and rather relaxing as games go... No fighting, no killing, and no running into walls or anything. Always a plus for me who can't control a race to save my life lol. Beautiful scenery, too. A nice change of pace! I enjoyed playing.

In the game, you're a travelling painter visiting an island, meet the locals, help them, do quests, and of course paint! When I say paint, it's more like selecting a view with the camera, and the game generates the painting for you, but still, it's a nice change from assassinating targets and killing monsters! Don't get me wrong, I do play plenty of fighting and killing games too, but sometimes, you just need to slow down and watch the scenery (and paint it!)

My main problem with the game is the lack of HUD, so you never know which way you're facing (at least if you're like me and need a map to make sense of the land around you) But eventually, you learn your way around! And once you have access to the big city, and you have money, you can buy a special tea from the tea seller... a tea that will let you fast travel to the places you've already discovered. There IS a map in the game, but it doesn't tell you where you are on it lol. That's what I missed the most. I kept getting lost. ^^;

It froze a couple of times, and there were a couple of bugs, but nothing major, and certainly nothing that prevented me from finishing all the quests.

I do NOT recommend buying the bicycle from the bicycle merchant, however. It's clunky to use, and it kept disappearing on me. The first and most important thing to buy, in my opinion, is the superior coat which allows you to stay out at night! Because, yeah, nights are so cold that, if you're caught outside, you'll freeze... and since you can't die in this game, you end up at the inn. :) Not dying... a new experience lol. :P

It took me a couple of days to finish it. At the end, once you've taken the ship back home, you get to see all the paintings you've done on the wall of your house too. Pretty cool! So yes, all in all, I recommend it, if you like slow-paced, relaxing games.

Eastshade is a beautiful game with amazing graphics and a chill storyline. It is very relaxing and easy to just sit down and play, without having to think about it too much. The world the game is set in is both vibrant and peaceful and I would recommend this to anyone and everyone, especially if you're looking for a break from fast- action games that sometimes feel as though you cannot get a break. Anyways, absolutely love this and is definitely worth the money.

A relaxing beautiful game with a well-written story and a charming music. Enjoyed all the way to the end.
Really appreciate the quest system, that there are no markers or map indicators, but rather a motivation to explore the world and to talk to people in order to complete the quests. This is my favorite aspect of the game.
The only thing i didn't appreciate was that one achievement which requires replaying the game... not cool.

Overall, would recommend the game if you want to chill and to have a relaxing journey through the magnificent island of Eastshade.

I truly, genuinely recommend this game.
Let me start with this: I have GAD and so I have an entire section of games dedicated to helping me distract myself and relax when my anxiety gets really bad. And this game is at the top of my favourite relaxing games. It's helped me feel better many times and I'm so grateful for that! So here it is, right off the bat: if you ever find yourself in a situation where anxiety or stress get the best of you and you need to take your mind off of things, this game is genuinely perfect.
Aside from the relaxing part I have my own three favourite pillars of the game that speak to me on a personal level, but I think are also good guidelines for telling if this game might interest you:
1. The main character being a painter. Now, I'm an artist myself and I think it's a lovely game for artists, but it goes beyond that - that premise basically invites you to take a ton of beautiful screenshots in the game. If you're into that (and I know I am) I think you'll love what this game has to offer.
2. I'm really into nature, I love walks in the forest and hiking and so on, so I also really appreciate exploring those in games. And this game has a beautifully crafted world. Truly. It's such a joy to explore the forests and flower-covered fields and waterfalls! Everything is just so serene and lovely.
3. It's a kind world. Some NPCs do have serious problems and not all of them are nice either, but regardless of that, the world is kind and hopeful. And I personally am tired of cynicism and toughness in fiction and I love this chance to experience something else.
So here you go, the three pillars that might help you determine if this game will catch your interest. I'd like to make a special mention of the music, too, because it's just stunning. It completes the game with that same relaxing and kind vibe. I even bought the soundtrack and I often listen to it when I'm relaxing <3
Surely, it might not be for everyone! But if you feel you could like it, I say be brave, try it. You might just fall in love with this game as deeply as I have.

Coming from a long line of Dutch Fresco Painters myself this game was very refreshing! It's like Skyrim without any killing.
Relaxing music, open world exploration. Basic crafting, helping the town folk with different tasks, earn money selling paintings requested, collect crafting materials in the world, speak to different characters, and escape reality for a while. Good game if it's on sale.

I love the game.
Casual game but with a purpose. I tend to hate games where just walk around aimlessly and suddenly the game ends.
This one makes you meet the residents of Eastshade, get to know them, help them, keep secrets and probably solve some mysteries.
I saw this comment saying 'You're a painter not a fighter' and this is very accurate.
Huge plus, I got some background pictures from the game bc the visuals are great.

HOWEVER! The game got bugs. I was getting stuck in some rocks and cliffs. kinda annoying when you had a lot of progress and you have to go back to the previous saved log.

Beautiful. Everything is. Even the deermen. I love how you're made to be someone who records the beauty of the world.

The most unique part of this game is YOU CAN'T SEE THIS LIKE YOU'RE A PLAYER CHARACTER IN AN RPG, it's not like you have to get every single quest in-game like what RPGs tend to be. You are supposed to be at free will of what you will do for the people, because your main goal is to do what you intend to do initially of what you come for, and certain quests do cause a difference of moral view from other characters to you, the outcomes are true as if you're an actual visitor to Eastshade, instead of a generic player character.

Unfortunately, there are some saveloading-related bugs such as some resources might not spawn due to reloading a previous savefile, but thankfully report bug in-game exists so I can tell the devs directly.

This game is a hidden gem.

The best thing about this game is that you are a painter not a fighter.

4.8/5 star.
(-0.2 point because you can get stuck in the starting area of the game if you use up your money. Then you have to forage and sell materials if you want to get to the actual meat of the game. My advice: don't buy anything until you have unlocked the larger area in the game.)

The world itself is beautiful, the characters I've met so far are ok, and the quests, even though are mostly fetch quests, make sense in the world.
BUT, I was never able to save the game and wasted a whole evening on this. There was one autosave at quite the beginning which got loaded when I died (the game never mentions you can freeze to death) and after I re-did everything from that autosave until my death and a bit more, I tried the fast travel mechanism of the game. But guess what, instead of being relocated to the city I was wanting to go, the bloody autosave got loaded and I again lost more than 1 hour of progress! For a game that came out quite a while ago and still has major progress preventing bugs, I am rather disappointed and thus can't recommend it.

A delightful, beautiful, immersive experience.

Eastshade is a relatively small, peaceful island in the middle of the ocean that you are free to explore from the start. You walk the forest paths, talk to and help people, read books, drink tea, and then use the inspiration gained from these activities to draw. You are a painter, after all.
So go out there, see the world, and create works of art for others to see.

Fair warning to anyone who gets simulation sickness: this game is VERY bad for it. Turn field of view to max, reticule on, and play in a very well-lit room a good distance from the screen if possible. Absolutely do not use the in-game bicycle! That said, I kept playing this even after it made me queasy several times, so I still recommend it.

Tl;dr: Beautiful, fun experience, but I wish there was more to it.

Eastshade feels like an Elder Scrolls game or Breath of the Wild, if you removed the combat elements (and some of the climbing ones). The painting is fun, and a recurring mechanic throughout, but it's so much more than just a painting game. It's honestly a bit like a Metroidvania, in that you unlock access to new areas little by little. If you love exploration and odd little character quests, you'll probably like Eastshade.

Good:
- Beautiful. Really, ridiculously beautiful everywhere. Exploring and painting are a joy
- Natural sounds and music are all very nice and immersive
- Characters have a lot of personality and their personal quests are fun

Not Good:
- Bit glitchy sometimes -- I had a town fail to load once and I clipped out of bounds, but reloading fixed it. A friend who tried it got stuck unable to save for an hour (solution to that is in the forums, if it happens to you)
- A portion of the quests are very short/simplistic. Some have choices, but most have only one solution. There were a few I found very unintuitive to start or complete, though those were thankfully rare.

Personal taste dependent:
- Game expects quite a bit from you. Read everything and maybe take some notes on paper for the smoothest experience.
- Voice acting is hit and miss. Some of it is quite good, but a few clips are strange or grating.
- Navigation is somewhat difficult. You don't start with a map, and you don't seem to be able to get a compass at all. If you struggle to orient yourself in games, this one will be somewhat rough!
- Would really have liked more of everything, though I know that isn't particularly fair. The vast majority of NPCs are one and done: do their quest, and no longer have any interesting interaction. There are some fascinating ideas and areas you only visit once that would have been amazing to see fleshed out and revisited. The game has far more systems than I would have initially guessed, but they're all somewhat shallow -- for instance, there's fishing, but only three types of fish to catch. It feels like the bones of what could have been a larger, deeper game.

Ultimately, it's a very good experience and it has a lot of heart. I found the ending very satisfying and I enjoyed the vast majority of the twelve hours my initial run took. (And yes, I think I'll probably replay it at some point!) Strongly encourage anyone who likes exploration games to play it, and I think it might be an interesting midpoint for people who like a lot of different styles of games! It's a bit of something for everyone in a very lovely package.

World to get lost in

I was always curious about this one since I loved Leaving Lyndow. Eastshade has a wonderful and vibrant world to explore. If you are a gawker for environment you will find yourself enjoying the scenery which is pretty much the highest selling point for this game. The story is compacted into a few main missions with a nice amount of side quests to do. These quests tie together the world and add lore to the various races and locations in the world. There's really something about walking, riding a bike, or boat through the beautiful scenery. The mechanics are pretty simple to understand. The painting mechanic is very much like using a camera to screenshot the world. While I enjoy this and it's nice it would have been fun to have a more in depth painting system. The only really threatening mechanic is the night cold which can send you back to your last resting location. Luckily you can buy a coat to get around this.

The Minor Gripes

While the story is well written and the quests are interesting, the mechanics of the quests for the most part feel a bit repetitive. A fair amount of them are fetch questy or go talk to the an npc. That's not to say the content of the story is bad, but running back and forth can get tedious even with fast travel. Fast travel is limited to an item which you can either craft or buy, so that also effects how often you will be running around. Another thing I noticed mainly from running around often was that there are objects I often clipped through. This kind of killed the immersion for me a bit. Minor things such as leaf foliage didn't matter as much, but when I start walking through signs it drags me out of the most dominant pro feature of this title. I ran into a few bugs such as being stuck in water on a boat or encountering a freeze while quick traveling. There is a bug report system so hopefully those instances get fixed over time.

Code

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ pros ♥

+Beautiful world to explore
+Interesting characters and story
+Excellent soundtrack

(っ>▬<)っ x cons x

-Quests feel repetitive
-Clipping can ruin the immersion

There is plenty to run around and explore and enjoy here. The game took me right under 9 hours to beat. I also did all the quests and most of the achievements. While the game play and mechanics felt a bit repetitive, there was plenty of scenery to enjoy. I can't say I'd recommend this one at full price, but if you enjoy walking sims and relaxing scenery than this one is pretty great for that if you can find it on a decent sale.

Beautiful and peaceful. More than a game; Eastshade is an experience of going to a beautiful island of kind people. It features no combat unlike 99% of adventure videogames and it is unapologetic about it. The blacksmith of Nava couldn't have put it better. We need more games like this.

A perfect game for gamers and non-gamers alike. As someone who isn't really into many conflict-heavy games, this was a perfect relaxing but fulfilling experience to play through. The graphics and visuals are lovely, the style is quite unique, and the characters were very engaging (kudos to the voice actors and writers). By the time it was time to leave East Shade, I felt a genuine sense of sadness when it came time to end my adventure on the island and board the ship back home. I hope to find other games like this, it was perfect for someone like me.

If you like taking beautiful landscape screenshots, Eastshade is a must buy

After Leaving Lyndow, the first title back in 2017 from Eastshade Studios, I knew this little development team had something special on their hands and the sequel set in the same world, Eastshade build upon that simplistic game-play and turns it into an impressive open-world adventure that swaps out combat for, well.. painting.

And it works, Eastshade is a the kind of game best suited for those who enjoy a slower pace, less of a challenge and more the chance to simply explore and soak up a truly beautiful world.

Eastshade almost feels like an Elder Scrolls game, the world you have to explore is vast with a lot of secrets to uncover, crafting, fantastic characters and writing. Questing is a little on the simple side, and mostly just fetch quests- This isn't such a bad thing in a title like this as it suits the pacing of the game and you will often find yourself going off the beaten track to see the landscapes, paint and soak in the atmosphere.

Steam has a large community of players who love taking amazing in-game screenshots, and Eastshade might be one of the best indie titles out there for it, in my short time with the game I have had endless opportunities for some truly beautiful shots and I am looking forward to taking a lot more.

PROS
- Stunning visuals
- Simplistic, relaxing gameplay
- The soundtrack is gorgeous
- A screenshot lovers delight

CONS
- Fetch quests can be a little samey

Eastshade is an island of breathtaking vistas; mountains of ice and snow a short walk from lush meadows and sandy beaches. Every crest and valley is just begging for a screenshot and, since you'll be playing as a painter looking for inspiration, seeking out these views will be your primary goal as a player too. The game could have stopped there and been a perfectly pleasant experience, but Eastshade is also populated by an assortment of unusual animal people, many of whom are looking for a little help or a bit of art and can sell you a tool or two to better explore their home in turn.

Sadly, just as many of these strangely anthropomorphic inhabitants are completely unwilling(or unable as this is game after all) to interact with you, leaving the island feeling a little less alive than it should. Its natural beauty has the same issue. Walking about it doesn't provide the sort feedback you'd expect from traveling down overgrown trails or across rocky shores. I have never gotten a greater sense of being a camera floating across a game world as I have in this game. The seams of the Eastshade experience are just a little too apparent.

Or they would be if not for its amazing soundtrack. Nothing can make you forget that your bike casts a shadow but you don't like the cry of harp-like strings and the pensive whistle of a woodwind. These musical pieces tie everything together and smooth over what would have been painfully noticeable cracks otherwise. Just like the island of Eastshade begs you to capture every single beautiful or bizarre sight you come across, its music begs you to breathe deep and let the sleepy, quiet peace of this place overtake you.

This is a beautiful and fatally underestimated gem of a game.
The landscape, the soundtrack, but first and foremost the little stories of people on the island will pull you into the world and give you a sense of wonder, like you visited narnia for the first time. There are no fancy technical next-gen-graphics needed, the core of the game ist already perfect as it is. Thank you, dear developers, for making this beauty :)

When it comes to bugs, this game is worse than a Bethesda game. Every time I use the bike, I can't fast travel or save. If I take a carriage, all the trees have low-poly models on top of their detailed ones. If I crouch while drinking dream tea, My character is permanently crouched until the next time I open the game.

Eastshade is a calming and pleasant game about visiting a mystical island and being a painter. It has many mechanics in common with walking simulators. The various means of progression through the game are entirely non-violent, though not always entirely obvious. Searching, gathering, careful reading and exploration all play key roles here. Yet in the end, the puzzles are logical, but the game offers only a small modicum of hand holding. Depending on one's perspective, that may be a plus or minus.

Eastshade's gorgeous landscapes and delightful, relaxing soundtrack are its primary enticements, and the designers clearly built a lovingly handcrafted world full of (mostly) friendly beast-folk for the player to discover and interact with. By visiting different scenic locations and completing quests, the player/artist gains Inspiration, which in turn allows for more paintings. While the initial walking pace is slow, various means of conveyance eventually open up the island for faster exploration.

Eastshade was prone to soft-locking on certain actions. For example placing a boat in the wrong spot soft-locked me 3 times during my playthrough, and once I experienced a jarring fall-through-the-world repeatedly in the Silver Dream sequence which required an alt-F4. I also experienced 3 additional hard freezes which all seemed related to riding the bicycle. Players are advised to save often to avoid soft-locks and crashes, though the lack of ability to archive saves is one additional small complaint, as you get only one save per play, plus an autosave.

Despite these technical mishaps, Eastshade remained entertaining and engaging from start to finish. The ability to fill one's home with lovely paintings of one's own design by the end of the game is a fun and rewarding endgame. For those who delight in non-violent and artistic games, this one's worth your time. Eastshade is a worthy addition to the walking simulator genre, and it's full of originality, kindness, inspiration and love.

It's not a terrible experience, just badly optimised.

PROS
- Novel idea
- Rich world
- Nice atmosphere

CONS
- Buggy/glitchy
(Totally crashed a bunch of times)
(NPCs getting stuck)
(Inventory inaccessible once or twice)
- Bad optimisation
(For a game where the whole USP is the graphics and the beauty of the world, FPS drops and jerky screens really ruined it for me, even on low settings)
- Slightly short story/small world
(There is one port town, one small city, a river, lake, a forest, moors and a few farm houses but not much else to explore).

Very beautiful game. Absolutely gorgeous soundtrack and intriguing story that stems off into multiple little branches and characters and how much of it you explore it entirely up to you. There are so many things to explore and so many goals to achieve. I have come to love this game dearly and the adventure and enchantment that came with it. The controls are fairly simple, a lot of it due to the fact there isn't any fights or lot of action, it focuses more heavily on relaxing, exploring, and task completion. I wish there was more to the game simply because I want it to always continue, but with how much there is to see and choose its already going to be a unique experience doing it again. If you want even just a taste of how great this game is I highly suggest playing Leaving Lyndow, as it serves as like a demo or prequel to Eastshade and is cheaper.

Absolutely adore this game. I imagined it being a relaxing game to explore around the island and paint, and it delivered on that. I wasn't expecting it's be so wholesome and overall heartwarming. I was pulled in and reached 95% in a little over eight hours over two days. For me, it gives the same cathartic feeling of walking around in Skyrim without the concerns of combat.

Pros:
The graphics are absolutely stunning, the atmosphere is beautiful, the music is wonderful to listen to (coming from someone who usually doesn't have sound on for 90% of games), and the voice actors do a lovely job of making every character sound unique and fun. The lore in the game is very interesting as well and I'm excited to finish the game to learn more about the world.

Cons:
The only con I can come up with is the fact that the game is a bit buggy. Some of the harmless ones include people that are supposed to be sleeping hovering in mid air, chickens morphing into walls, etc. But I've had more than one problem with actual bugs that hurt gameplay. When I was fishing my line got stuck in the ground and would not release, causing the game to then stutter and crash when I tried walking away to see if that would help. I don't want to spoil anything but there's a late game area that I walked into and suddenly the game was frozen with clanging sounds that ended up causing the game to crash after about a minute. The fact that the game auto-saves fairly frequently makes sure that you never loose too much progress but it can get a bit annoying after a while.

Overall thoughts:
If the idea of playing something similar to Skyrim but with easier quests and no fighting sounds appealing to you, I absolutely recommend Eastshade. I've seen it go on sale quite a few times since I originally added it to my wishlist a few months ago so definitely buy it on sale. I absolutely recommend this game and I'd love to see more from the company. I hope one day this game comes out with a VR version, it would be so beautiful

With a few minor caveats, this is a lovely game. If you enjoy the exploration and character-befriending elements of large open world RPG games and get fed up when you keep having to stop to fend off giant spiders and skeletons, welcome to Eastshade. There's nothing to fight, only people to meet, places to explore, tea to drink and paintings to paint. Perhaps it's because this year has seen me becoming an unwilling homebody, but Visiting Eastshade gave me the feeling of being on a quiet holiday, exploring a new place and getting to know the locals.

So... the caveats. There are a few little niggles like the slightly odd voice acting of some of the NPCs, and the disconcerting appearance of some of the anthropomorphic characters. These weren't deal breakers for me, though. I think they're just reminders that you're playing a smaller indie game.
More significantly my computer was really chugging trying to cope with the graphics, and things got glitchy from time to time. The biggest problem, though?

An inability to change key bindings. It's such a basic accessibility feature, and I'd consider it absolutely essential for a game's release. I shouldn't have to whip out AutoHotKey to program something to let me play with the keyboard setup I need.

This is honestly one of the only games I've enjoyed from start to finish. Beautiful, smart and believable, and thankfully lacking in the one thing all other RPGs cannot seem to get over: combat.

Eastshade demonstrates it's possible to adventure without resorting to violence, and it's such a refreshment from games like Skyrim, where the best one can hope for is reach a good enough level to no longer be troubled -but still bothered- by random fighting encounters. You're free to speak and negotiate, explore and investigate, trade and amass resources while remaining entirely pacific.

I just wish Steam had more than just this game to offer.

Eastshade is one of the loveliest games I've ever played. The environments are breaktaking, the quests are creatively designed and gel into a fascinating thematic whole, and the ending is one of the most emotionally satisfying I've ever encountered. This game is one of the finest examples of unifying theme and mechanics out there.

Eastshade is also one of the buggiest games I've played. Level geometry pops in and out of existence unexpectedly, dialogue trees work themselves into invalid states, and the player and their vehicles can get stuck on level geometry in such a way that the only way out is a restart, losing game progress. To name a specific example, I couldn't see or turn to seee the character confronting me at the emotional climax of the story because of a technical issue seemingly related to the bike I was on at the moment the conversation started--nearly ruining an otherwise brilliantly conceived scripted event.

I highly recommend the game anyway. It's an experience unlike any other game out there, and clearly made with an infectious amount of love and creativity. Just... remember to save often. And don't ride your bike indoors.

One of my comfort games, a colourful world where I often return when I'm stressed, with an optional cup of tea.
Sadly the world it's not that big, but it's still... lively? The inhabitants of Eastshade sure are quiet, but you can find them equally scattered around the island, always doing something or talking. I will never be able to get out of my head the moment I entered the main city of Nava. So many people and still a soothing atmosphere.
The soundtrack is stunning. Along with Botanicula's, it's definitely one of my favourite videogames OST and succeeds in transporting you to the lands of the island of Eastshade.
I recommend this game to people who don't mind walking simulators with a bit of side-questing and a lot of scenery eye candy... your experience of Eastshade could be brief or long, but probably pleasant. It also can be a good game for taking screenshots; brewing tea adds colour filters for more fancy results!

[spoiler]There's a short game from the same studio, Leaving Lyndow, set in the same environment and playing it can help with a 'musical' achievement on Eastshade.[/spoiler]

Eastshade turned out to be a very special game for me, and this is why I have very little to say about it – everything I can write will pale in comparison to the actual thing and I don't want that to happen. This is probably the first time I am struggling to express my thoughts in a review; it's been an hour and a half of fruitless attempts and I have just given up – it's not happening. I hope you have already played a game that is simply too big for words. If not, let it be the next one in your library.

That is not to say Eastshade is perfect and I love it blindly. As much as I appreciate how it made me feel, I can also see all of its flaws, which aren't numerous, but visible nonetheless. My biggest gripe is sudden crashes that seemed to happen more and more often as I progressed through the story. With the autosave system proven to be incompetent at what it's supposed to do, I slowly learned to manually save every five minutes in order to stop losing sizeable chunks of progress – from a total of sixteen hours I spent with Eastshade, at least a couple were wasted on retracing my steps.

And... I still recommend it. This fact in itself says a lot more than I ever could.

Enjoy the view!

I got to the party on Skyrim too late to have enjoyed it, having tried it for the first time after playing the Witcher 3. So when I heard people simplify this game to being Skyrim without combat, I thought they meant it was a good looking world to explore and make paintings in without combat mechanics.

What I didn't realize was that they weren't kidding about it being Skyrim without combat. The more modern elder scrolls games aren't famous for their well written stories or characters. Unfortunately, this game has the same problem for me. The characters are one-dimensional, the quests are kind of silly and don't make much sense. Everything just feels kind of dumb if you think about it too much.

I don't know whether I would have enjoyed this game if I was less experienced with games like the Witcher 3 or not. Maybe I'm just getting older and more demanding with the quality I want from games that I can sit down by myself and play. Either way, I wanted to like this game but I just couldn't bring myself to it.

I have played through this game twice. Once for the story, a second time to 100% the achievements. Eastshade us fun, relaxing, atmospheric, and just an all around good time. Being able to paint the beautiful scenery is a fun addition. The side quests and characters you meet are more fun and intriguing than expected. There was also a lot more game than I though on first look.

The only cons I had were the game engine was sometimes a bit buggy, but nothing game breaking. The walking speed was a bit too slow for the expansive world (but this will be helped later game by some upgrades you can buy). Sometimes the quests were a bit tedious.

Overall, this was a game I fully enjoyed my first playthrough, then a few months later was hankering for more. Anyone who enjoys walking sim RPGs should give this one a try.

I was so ready to come on here and wax lyrical about how much I loved this game - it's charming, it's soothing, I loved the interactions I had with the NPCs and it's beautiful to look at - which is why it sucks to say that I can't recommend this game because it's too buggy.

Within the couple of hours of playing I already ran into some pretty serious bugs, including being completely unable to save (which I suspect might have something to do with being punched by one of the NPCs) and, worst of all, after reaching Nava and using the fast-travel cart system, an hour of quest progress just vanished. I had done absolutely everything I could do in the first town, and when I got the cart back from Nava, it's like the game went back in time and progress was reversed. It absolutely sucked and I can't explain it.

There are loads of really positive reviews on here, so I can only presume it's just me that had all these bugs? I'm really disappointed as I loved the aesthetic of the game and would have loved to finish it, but I can't justify putting more hours in if my progress can disappear on a whim.

Sorry, Dev :(

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the description, so I'll start with what the game actually is. It's set in a fantasy world full of humanoid animals, and you walk around doing quests (find an item, talk to a person, paint a place, etc.) It took me 17 hours to finish at a medium pace. Everything in this game is super-beautiful, and since a large part of it basically involves taking screenshots, you will definitely enjoy this if you like looking at things. It's very relaxing. While some of you might be tempted to rush from one quest to another thinking you'll take your time later, this game is best savoured one bit at a time. There are some survival elements at the beginning (nights are too cold to be outside without external help and money is an issue at first), but these only serve as a sort of tutorial - not letting you progress too far without finishing the basics first. After you've made it to the city, you will be able to easily afford the various upgrades that will make it possible to just do whatever you like and paint any time of day or night. I will definitely want to replay this some time in the future. (And if you don't want to miss one of the hidden achievements, make sure to obey the signs!)

Eastshade is a gorgeous open-world game. It reminds me a lot of Myst, in that there is plenty to investigate and learn about the world around you. The game is your's. You can play it however you want to and make it your own adventure.

Meditative Wandering through a Storybook Island

I think I loved this game.

If you're into exploring and hiking around a serene, colorful, and lush landscape, I think you might too. There were many times I literally said WOW out loud. Looking at you [spoiler]star cave.[/spoiler] Other times, the landscape, lighting, and music made total magic. Especially fond of the brief [spoiler]night drummer's sequence.[/spoiler]

It glitched out a few times, so don't forget to save often but don't want to imply that the game ever felt broken. The couple times it did that was never a bother. I'm not sure I was allowed to go down that waterfall. haha. I was also playing on Ultra, so pushing the graphics is probably my fault (but absolutely worth it). The game's too kind to ever be mad at it.

I'd also say that the game definitely builds. Head to Nava as soon as you're able to get a feel for just how much it opens up. I'd love to see what a more robust and larger map would have to offer. And perhaps aged up just a bit. There were times I felt I was in a kid's storybook. Not a bad thing but hard to keep real interest in small affairs for too long. As it is, I think it's a perfectly sized map and story. I played a meandering 20 hours, but I enjoyed walking back and forth and didn't take some of the later game fast travel options much. You could probably finish in closer to 10.

I mean this with total sincerity, this is a game I wish I could get my mom or grandmother to play. I think they'd love it. But saying so, in this apocalyptic year of 2020, the quiet, low to no stakes mediation this game vibes with is very welcome.

I'd rate it a 4.

1 - Ungood, 2 - Disappointing, 3 - Worth It, 4 - Surprising, 5 - Masterpiece

What a strange experience it was playing this game. Overall this is a pretty average fetch quest/walking sim with some interesting bolt-ons.

Pros:
- The world seems immersive at certain points
- Painting mechanic can be satisfying
- Dialogue can be funny and you do get some good choices.

Cons:
- You don't really do all that much painting. I was hoping for a game where that was the main focus, instead I ended up doing almost anything apart from that.
- So so so so much walking about not really doing very much apart from travelling from point A to B to complete quests
- The world is a really weird mix of horrible assets arranged prettily, which starts to grate very quickly when doing the aforementioned fetch quests
- Sound mixing is bad, the music in Nava in particular drove me nuts
- NPCs, while often charming, are badly animated, meaning the charm is kaput

10/10. Without a doubt. Scenic landscape with great soundtrack. Engaging storyline and wonderfully built characters. Exploration at your own pace. Seriously, what more could one ask for?

Wow this is really my fav game of all time. You can relax, chill and enjoy your time exploring Eastshade at your own pace. The stories and quests are nicely planned to guide you through your adventure. I am so emotionally connected with the game and the NPCs that I just wanna stay in Eastshade without leaving and getting my final achievement!

On the downside, the first person perspective has given me so much motion sickness... But that just didn't keep me from revisiting the game again and again just to chill out at places and paint.

Tips: Make sure your room is bright and cool. Avoid being too close to the monitor. And take breaks every now and then. I have defo learned it the hard way....lol

Last but not least, I just want to thank the devs for making this remarkable game. Looking forward to your next game!

A really really pretty game alas for me it was a fetch and go back fetch and go back kind of game that just just doesnt appeal to me anymore.

But if you want something to play now and then that looks good on the eye and you like to wander and explore then this one might be for you!

This is an absolutely STUNNING game. The art work is beautiful, the concept is beautiful, the peaceful atmosphere is beautiful.

However, I really wish the developers would make some updates or something because unfortunately there are so many bugs, I even sent in a bug complaint and never heard back from anyone or saw any update to correct it. This makes it slightly frustrating as this is such a unique game that has so much potential. If we were able to interact with more objects as well that would really improve the game.

Despite all of the bugs, this is still a relaxing game that anyone who enjoys beautiful scenery and a chill atmosphere with no combat, will enjoy. I would just buy it while it is on sale though seeing as it doesn't get any new updates to it.

Bought this on my birthday because it was on sale. It looked pretty and so I sacrificed a bit of my bday money for this instead of buying the expensive ones that were in my wish list for years. Didn't expect much, but I was just sold on the premise of being a painter and travelling around. Downloaded it, played it, and man.. It is the most beautiful game I've played. It touched my soul, in a way that it fulfilled my dream of being a travelling artist and befriending all those in my path. I didn't know this would be my most favorite game yet, not because I haven't played better games, but because it just stoked the feeling of nostalgia. I've always been more of a slice-of-life adventure type of person and this was right up my alley. It has beautiful music, stunning environmet, and characters might look a bit creepy.. But they are loveable and it was so nice seeing LGBTQ+ couple. Especially loved being the cupid of those sweet girls. One of my fav quest is befriending Alejo, and also travelling the the Northern Reaches even tho it was pretty scary for me. I loved just relaxing, making tea, and staring at the beautiful scenery. I don't know if I could ever play a game like this again and it saddens me. I really wish there is a sequel, maybe a new place to explore, and the ability to eat the food cuz man the food around Eastshade looks so delicious. I felt like the game's too short and I really wanted more of it, and prolly spruce up the dialogue after finishing quests cuz they're stuck at the same dialogue and I couldn't even say good bye to them when I was leaving.

Eastshade has quite a bit of bugs, and I was always motion sick at the first two hours of playing. Also, I wish my save was ported online instead of it being saved on local files. Had to go through the frustration of replaying the game(didn't really mind) because my computer was broken and my save was lost. Overall, I highly recommend the game to people who just wants to relax and travel around. Despite the flaws, I still wholeheartedly love the game and it will always have a special place in my heart.

This game was beautiful beyond words. From the amazing landscapes to the likable characters, there was so much about this game that made it stand out in its genre. Getting to know all the diverse characters (with outstanding voice actors) was one of my favorite parts of the game. I loved being able to explore and experience this new world and imagine what my character looked like. This game is so well made and easily one of my new favorites.

Wow. I've just finished this game, and it has leapt to the forefront of my personal shortlist for Game of the Year. Such a serene, tranquil delight to experience. In a world too often wanting for positive experiences, I spent my time in Eastshade with a constant smile and near-constant goosebumps, whether from the sumptuous look of the game or the utterly transporting score, which is among the most beautiful I've heard in a game.

I can't say enough about how I happened across this game at the absolute perfect time in my life for it to have maximum impact. It's just wonderful, and was nothing less than a tonic for my soul.

Bob Ross in Skyrim simulator - Highly wholesome and relaxing

A very light puzzle adventure that puts you in the role of a travelling artist, on a quaint island full of animal-headed locals who'd like you to paint some of the gorgeous scenery or run typical errands for them.

The setting is lovely, the game is incredibly peaceful, very much on the slow side, and I managed to entirely miss crucial chunks of the gameplay and mechanics of it for hours and hours. You can acquire a map but there's no marker on it for yourself or a compass so you have to navigate by landmarks.

The bicycle is the jankiest thing ever and I love it. Going past an innkeeper, maintaining eye contact the entire time as I cycled slowly, backwards, into my room and up onto my bed to snooze and wake up with my bike still in the bed, made my day.

Early on there's some good lore and mystery to the setting, coupled with a curfew of nightime as you very quickly freeze your butt off and pass out, waking up in the nearest inn, until you can work out sources of heat to let you explore the nighttime! Ultimately there's not an overarching plot, just a decent amount of little small story threads to occupy you and a lovely ending sequence that did make me smile

My main critique is how hard it is to keep 'inspiration' up, if you're like me and you want to paint for your own benefit as well as for commissions, you'll quickly run out of your mojo to paint and it's incredibly difficult to get back. I honestly can't see why this limiter is in the game at all, it actively makes you avoid painting in a beautiful game about painting because you might not have the stamina to paint when you find something you actually need!

This is a game that I really wanted to like. The main concept of the game is interesting. The art style is visually appealing, albeit graphically look a bit outdated for a 2019 game. No quest markers to hold your hand forces you to pay attention to speech, text, and the environment. No violence or fighting, just exploring peacefully. All great concepts in this game. Sadly, the problems with this game seriously outweigh the pros.

The game has many bugs and glitches that will softlock your game or force you to start a new game entirely. A lot of the issues with the game could be circumvented, if the game allowed you more than 1 save file. Unfortunately it doesn't, and it will autosave without telling you. Issues such as the pause menu not showing up after fishing, riding a bike, or interacting with the environment. Or certain key characters not appearing at all due to bugs no matter how many times you reload your game. Or getting stuck somewhere without a raft or the fast travel tea or necessary equipment to build another one. Or even Pilot Nessa getting stuck and not being able to get on her balloon to take you up the mountain, basically softlocking your game as the main quest is dependent on this baloon.

That's not even considering all the strange bugs such as fish swimming in the air, or you falling from the hot air balloon mid flight, or sheep walking around in the lake, or so many others that completely break the immersion.

I wish this game was more polished, I really liked it in the beginning and wanted to love it but it became so frustrating to play due to all the issues that took all the enjoyment out of it.

Eastshade is a relaxing adventure game about a painter who survived a shipwreck on the shores of a beautiful little town called Lyndow. Our protagonist is going to Eastshade not just to have a sense of adventure but to also paint his mother's most favourite locations per her request. While this is your main quest and everything is pretty much optional, in order to access some of these locations you will find yourself helping the natives, solving their problems, painting for them so on and on.

The game is heavily based on visuals, you are a painter after all. The game also has a big emphasis on tea culture. There are many different teas you can craft or purchase in the game. Some of these teas actually do have a function such as allowing you to fast travel between areas you previously discovered. However majority of the teas are for visuals only, think of them as filters that exist on photo editing apps. They change the colours and add certain effects to your surroundings while the tea is active. These colours and effects can be reflected onto your paintings.

In order to paint you need inspiration. To get inspiration you can read new books, discover new locations and sit in hot springs. Every time you paint, you lose a chunk of your inspiration. Technically there is an infinite source of inspiration as you also get it every time you hear an NPC sing or tell a story regardless of whether you did that before so don't be afraid of running out of inspiration for good.

The paint related quests are quite simple. Does the NPC want the picture of a tree? You can pick any tree you want. Is it a windmill? There are plenty, it doesn't matter which one. Certain paint contracts have very specific requirements like painting the interior of a very specific cave located in a very specific place or an owl but these are somewhat rare.

Eastshade is a big island consisting of smaller islands. Some of these islands have a bridge you can cross to access but the others will need you to craft a raft or a boat to cross across streams or lakes since you can't swim. In order to find schematics for these you will need to do quests for the NPCs. Apart from mandatory equipment, you can also craft or purchase many optional tools that will help you with your journey such as a tricycle which greatly boosts your movement speed.

Resources are basically infinite and most craftable material like flowers, feathers and sticks etc respawns after a few days so you can paint as much as you want without any worries. Certain craftable materials like fabric for an easel can be bought from a vendor with gallowstones. Gallowstones can be farmed infinitely so you can't run out of it for good either.

One of the game design choices I don't agree with in Eastshade is that there is the element of cold at night. You have about 10 seconds of wandering around at night before you are automatically taken to the nearest inn where you can sleep to pass the time. However there are many ways to battle the cold.

Another criticism I've got is that the game only has one save slot. I also wasn't happy with the map not disclosing my own location. You can only see the overall map and the locations you discovered that are available for fast travel.

The game is beautiful, and great landscapes.

However, the quests are kind of forced and then the game punishes you by lowering your inspiration meter when you veer off the linear path... Like I can't paint anything I want to, such as a bridge or a lovely scene with flowers.

It was a huge turnoff to the gameplay and progression of the game for me. I don't recommend playing this if you want to explore and move away from the main quests.

It's rare I write reviews. Often I see that people have already expressed my thoughts on a game even if I like it, but Eastshade just isn't the same. If you've read a handful of other reviews before this one, you'll know some basics. Namely its a walking simulator, maybe about 15-20 hours worth of gameplay. I bought this game on sale thinking it looks cool enough judging from the screen shots. I had about wrapped up AC Origins and was looking for something different to take me away. I figured Eastshade (a game I had never heard of before having stumbled upon it in steam recommendations) looked worth the time based off the images and the reviews I had seen. So how was my experience? I cried when I got to journeys end, not because I was disappointed, rather sad I was parting ways with Eastshade. The moment I had stepped ashore and gazed down the meadowed forest path, I knew it would be worth it. Over my 14 hours I spent every second immersed in the world these developers created. I didn't just feel like I was there, but that I was interacting, changing, and helping the world around me. Often, the conversations started with NPCs in some quests continued inside of me even when I had left the game for the night, as was the nature of their subtle but much deeper meaning. You can call eastshade a game, but an experience is what it truly is. When my time at eastshade came to a close, I shed tears. I didn't cry because of any one moment, but rather because of all of them. In the end east shade wasn't 14 hours of game play for me, it was a world I had the pleasure of being a part of, the memories and feelings of which will stick with me longer than games which I have up to a hundred hours in. I loved playing this game, and should you buy it (more than worth full prince in my book), I hope you will as well.

Pros: Beautiful, even on low-end hardware like my i3-3120M with HD 4000 graphics. I'm sure it's much better on better hardware where the graphics can be turned up past the lowest setting. Performance is relatively good, except when raining, even on much lower hardware than recommended. The storyline is fairly good, with lots of different types of quests.

Cons: Can be very buggy. Make sure to save your game often, especially right before sleeping or using Mountainwort Tea. It crashes relatively often when doing one of those actions. If you are unable to complete a quest or have other problems like that, restart the game. Progression can be a bit slow at times. It's not very replayable.

Simply put, it's beautiful, but extremely buggy. I bought it at half price and I would consider it worth $13, but I'd hesitate at $25. It took me 12-13 hours to play through.

Synopsis: This game is beautiful, peaceful, fun, exciting -- and full of bugs. It is an excellent tool if you have anxiety or depression, and it is very inclusive without making it a big deal - so it feels NATURAL instead of pandered. I love that the feeling and heart of the game is so sincere.

Despite the heavy bug issues - I love this game.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eastshade is an at-your-own pace open world where you explore the continent and find hidden treasures and secrets. You don't have bosses to fight, or worry about losing progress or your gear if you die or mess up and get stuck, and you don't have to worry about high drama or exclusion.

One of my FAVORITE things is that there are different types of partners in the world - and the game is LGBTQ friendly - making it feel normal and not something to gawk at. It feels natural and I LOVE that so much.

The voice acting and world lore is sublime. You get really good side stories on quests, and learn more and more as you complete tasks. Some of the stories are very happy - and some very sad.

The only thing that REALLY IRKS ME about this game are all the bugs it has -- but the game is so good, that they bugs are more of an inconvenience that a game killer. Last night my game whacked out and I lost 1 1/2 hours of game play... because I forgot to save -- SO SAVE OFTEN and it isn't too big of a deal. Lesson learned.

Normally bugs like that would completely destroy my desire to play ever again after such a loss. I've seriously quit games that bugged out or wouldn't let me complete it for some glitch or another -- ESPECIALLY when I've made so much progress...but not Eastshade. I need to see it all. I need to know it all. I /need/ to complete this game and all of it's glory.

I literally stayed up until 3am to recover my progress - but I took a different path and ended up finding so much more...

This puts the burning fuel that is my anxiety and depression right out. I can focus on something beautiful, and not have to stress about time limits or messing up - so my anxiety takes a hike.

If you are like me and you can't shut your world off ever - try out Eastshade. You'll fall in love and get lost in a new world filled with magical sights. You can pretty much go anywhere and look at all the nooks and crannies. If you are a person who looooves exploring instead of a linear line of tasks - this is certainly the game for you!

10/10 BY A MILE!! First this type of game is NOT my type usually at all. I like horror, action, detective, and when I saw this game I was intrigued because of how unusual the point of the game is. Then I saw a review by someone who said it helped them during their depression because of how calming it is--so I had to get it. ITS THE BEST GAME I HAVE PLAYED IN OVER 8 YEARS. I AM SO WOWED!
So basically its a 1st person game when you visit this BEAUTIFUL and very clever island and you have to complete small quests, paint for commission and quests and explore. The wonderful thing about this is that you will never get bored because every corner of the island is so different! Its open world and you can choose in what order you wish to complete the quests.
THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THIS GAME
-The ways to make money- FISHING, SCAVENGING, GATHERING.
-Creations- you get to make your own raft, boat, tent, fire, drinks, you get to zipline
-EXPLORE- Caves, underground tunnels, a city, a seatown, beaches, forests, small islands, hidden ruins... the list goes on and on.
Danny and his team are pure genius for coming up with this wonderful world. I honestly felt like I was on Eastshade on holiday, not in my room playing a game. I have signed up to their website and I am DESPERATELY hoping they will make more.
I would love it if there were a few more commission paintings wanted and I honestly just didnt want this game to end.
I hope they make DLC'S and even different worlds with the same concept! I have since tried to look on steam and online for games similar to Eastshade and I cant find a single one.
Thank you Eastshade and please please please make more- soon!

SUMMARY
GAMEPLAY- 10/10
ATMOSPHERE- 10/10
CONCEPT- 10/10
CHALLENGING YET NOT STRESSFUL

It looks like just another walking simulator, but it's a real adventure game.
You talk to people, solve their problems, pick up items, etc.

And all this happens on the beautiful island of Eastshade, where you can find so many places worth painting!
The beautiful music also helps to get into the right mood.

A very relaxing game that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to take a break from fast-paced action games.
Stop and smell the roses!

Eastshade is like Oblivion without the glitches and combat. It's a wonderful experience and it oozes of charm. The graphics are great for an indie game, and the music is simply fantastic. I also loved the way you do quests, as you don't get waypoints and get told exactly what to do. No, you have to explore and find out things on your own. It's such a rewarding gameplay loop. All in all, I couldn't recommend this game enough.

If you're looking for something relaxing with beauty, depth, story, quests, and just a pleasant way to spend time, this is just that kind of game. Quite refreshing to play something without any negativity or violence.

As to the complaints of performance issues even on a high end PC, sadly there are some. I set my graphics settings to Medium and that smoothed out the game a bit without sacrificing too much in beauty. Its such a great game though that you easily forgive these issues once you get a couple hours in.

Recommend even at regular price.

My kind of game. The more I played, the more I fell in love with it. Just exploring, enjoying the scenery, camping, painting and drinking lots of tea that makes things look funky. The world is beautiful and unique. I loved the idea of non-violent adventure game and I'd really like to see more games like this. It's like stepping into a dream or fairy tale.

There were some bugs so I had to save often. Still, my biggest complaint is that it all ended too soon. I would have loved even more quests, details and exploration and something new left for a second playthrough.

After you get past the first hour, this game improves a lot. Starting off, the creepy animal npcs were extremely off-putting (will probably have nightmares about the owl people). Not only that, in the very first town everyone is pretty much a jerk, which doesn't seem to fit with the relaxing, explorative game I was expecting. (One of your first quests is basically calling defax on a guy's family.)

HOWEVER, once you leave that first awful town the game gets a whole lot better. Given how few players get the achievement for finishing the game, my guess would be a lot don't get past the first area. I almost quit, too. SAVE OFTEN. There is almost no autosave, and the game is prone to crashing.

I've enjoyed my time in Eastshade: it felt like the holiday it intended to simulate, strolling around a beautiful fantasy environment, being nice to people, solving their problems, painting pictures. It's the kind of holiday I'd like to have if I were a professional painter monkeyman visiting a utopian, toklienesque island.
The experience felt like a bit of an antidote to the many fantasy games where, when strolling through beautifully imagined, lushly rendered landscapes, my reveries are invariably interrupted by an angry crab or a guy I've only just met who, by way of introduction, inexplicably screams 'why won't you die?!'.
Eastshade says 'no, you don't need to make a game that way' and in fact, the local blacksmith pointedly says that she believes making swords is 'boring' and she's glad Eastshade's residents have no need of them (this, despite some minor argy-bargy between peaceful stoners and religious zealots over the correct use of 'herbal tea').
Criticising such a peaceful, relaxing game therefore feels like punching a kitten and yet, as I am not as nice as the protagonist I played, I will offer some minor negatives:

The game makes frequent use of contrived barriers to progress including unclimbable walls that really ought to be climbable, streams that could be waded through, inviting landscapes that are inaccessible. I can guess why they did this as it keeps the pacing just right but still, it spoils immersion. I can see a snowy peak and damnit, I want to scale that mountain and freeze to death if I didn't pack adequate clothing. I'd like to be able to swim out to sea and get to areas I'm not 'supposed' to stand on, even if it means being eaten by a shark!
The inaccessibility of plainly visible goals and set pacing of the game did unfortunately lessen the admirable sense of tranquillity the game otherwise exudes.

The other, relatively minor gripe is with some of the rendering. This is a game set on an island and criss-crossed with rivers, ponds and lakes yet the treatment of water was, whilst serviceable, not as great as it could have been. For one thing, reflections appeared to come from static cube maps when Unity has built in support for screen space reflection mapping. Likewise, the flow of the water could have been handled better by generating flow maps for the waterways - they felt more like layers of textures moving on a flat surface.
The woodlands, whilst beautiful, could have been enhanced with some volumetric lighting, sending dappled sunlight through the leaves.

But, perhaps I'm being churlish: the game is beautiful and did what it promised to do. I feel refreshed and inspired by my visit to the island and didn't really want to leave.
8/10

In Eastshade, your character is a travelling a painter. Most of the gameplay revolves around you exploring and painting (basically taking screen-shots) throughout a small island. This is a slow & calm game, requiring patience to play.

Pros:
+Beautiful graphics, every plant feels like it was placed with care. Interior building layouts feel particularly cosy and well designed.
+Memorable music, very calming and fitting to the game.
+The stories are good. There are a few that make you think a bit with small puzzles. They are quite short often not too deep or dark, which adds to the whole pleasant experience this game offers.

Neutral:
=The world is very 'nice'. Nothing too bad ever happens, everyone is pretty friendly etc... This game would be suitable for young children. However, for me, this is a welcome break from the usual violent games and real life, but won't be enjoyable for everyone.
=It's not difficult or challenging. There are no weird or in-depth mechanics to master. Again, a refreshing change for me, but not for everyone.
=It took me 9 hours to complete it along with most of the achievements. It's quite a short game, but I will come back and play again.
=Quite a bit of back-tracking, but through the pretty island & with the good music, it's kind of fun.

Cons:
-In 9 hours I encountered 2 game freezes which resulted in me force closing the game and losing some progress. Also had 3 glitches which prevented quest progression, these were solved by a game restart however.
-Not particularly well optimised. My fps varied wildly from 15 to 120 depending on were I was.

Not for me.

I liked the idea of this game, the idea of an open world where you paint and explore, but having tried it out I just didn't take to it. The characters look a little creepy, too close to human whilst looking like animals. The world is 'open' but you can't do basic things like jump over a small wall and go into water. I don't like invisible barriers.
Visually it's alright, it's better than average but other games also have very good visuals, I wouldn't say they're unusually great. Maybe when it first came out?

no violence, just travelling, hiking and getting high on teas. 10/10 recommended.

A beautiful, kind game where the player explores a charming island country by painting the landscape, reading books, and drinking tea. The soundtrack is especially soothing.

Actually played 22 hours. Beautiful graphics, enough quests that are only moderately hard, no time limit on anything. In fact, if you have the in-game Coat, you can stay out all night.
There are two things I'm disappointed in, the map does not show your current location, and the sun rises and sets in the west, and it doesn't really get that dark outside. Evening does make it easier to find items in the woods since they have lighted outlines.

Oh Eastshade how you have left an empty vast hole in the relaxing rpg gaming world.
You are one of a kind, simplistic in nature and purpose but what you did do was perfect.
Your Oblivion esque music with those shiny crystal lights I remember from the oblivion dungeons gave me joy and meditative peace whilst enjoying the most meaningful conversations with creatures from your world.
The mini games, insightful conversations, spectacular views, gave me room to pause and question existence, or better yet, made me want to escape in entirety to your custom built world.
I found I did not miss those bloodcurdling battles in other RPG's, in fact you made me forget fighting in games ever existed.
''Sigh''. Please return with another chapter, I thought Witcher 3 held my heart like no other, but I have realised I have space for both of you to exist in peace and harmony.
Please spend a lot of money and time on the next game and in return I will pay more for it, as the price justifies the incredible journey I would never have found in any other game x

A pretty adventure and exploration game that was just the right length for me. I enjoyed exploring the different parts of the island and completing quests. Relaxing and enjoyable!

I don't want to give this game a bad rating because it is quite nice, and has potential.... but the game is fucking optimized like shit. It's disappointing to walk around such a beautiful relaxing game at 15 fps. It has a lot of bugs as well, and in general needs a lot of polishing. But the atmosphere and world is such a delight, i'll probably solider through these issues and continue playing but I feel like future buyers need to be aware of this.

If you like walking simulators and atmospheric games, but have always kinda wanted a bit more depth and interaction, this is a great game to try out. Its got beautiful landscapes, tons of fully voiced characters, quests, puzzles and riddles, crafting and choice based dialogue! The map is a LOT larger than I thought it was going to be, and there is a fair amount of lore for the world. 100% pick it up if its on sale for a relaxing yet engaging experience.
