Retro FPS renaissance
The transcendent, the one and only, DUSK. A retro FPS created with seemingly endless creativity and design intricate enough to earn the game its rightful place among the classics like Quake or Blood. By the end of 2018 when DUSK came out, retro FPSes were still relatively few in number. I believe the game’s success paved the way towards retro FPS genre becoming nowadays one of the most prolific types among indie games in general. All that for a good reason.
The intruder
Let’s get the classic game references out of the way early – in terms of graphics DUSK is best compared to Quake with its chunky 3D visuals. The game is also widely compared to Doom because of the general atmosphere of this title, as well as coloured keys and doors being a core mechanic. Admittedly, DUSK evidently draws from these titles, however the game goes way beyond a pale imitation by taking the formula in its own unique direction – it’s a retro FPS, albeit one evidently made in 2018.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2792091706
With that hurdle out of the way, it’s time for the menacing title card. The first sight afterwards is a group of 3 chainsaw-wielding maniacs charging at Duskdude. As you dispatch the enemies with game’s signature sickle in each hand, you come to realise that your character was hanging in decrepit basement with meat hooks lodged in his back just seconds ago. It takes DUSK about 15 seconds to properly establish the atmosphere of mystery and danger and it only keeps building upon this foundation. Beside small hints and a text bar at the end of each episode, DUSK offers precious little in terms of story, although it really doesn’t need one. Fluid gameplay, atmospheric soundtrack and visually distinct level design join together to make the player leap into the fray with a simple notion: “it’s either me or them” and never question why the cultist hordes require the culling until the game ends.
Strafe like a cheetah kick like a mule
One of the major factors contributing to the retro feel of the game is Duskdude’s insane movement capabilities. Not only the player can scale ridiculously steep surfaces, strafe jumping continuously increases movement speed allowing the protagonist to traverse more open levels of the game in a matter of seconds. However, extraordinary agility would mean little without an arsenal to back it up with.
Tools of the trade come in an impressive variety of 10 weapons to choose from. Pleasantly, all of them sound and feel exactly as powerful as they should be. Furthermore, short of humble pistol and perhaps sickles, all weapons are perfectly viable throughout the entire game. Let’s take a closer look, shotguns come in 2 flavours – double barrel and lever-action, the latter having an akimbo option for considerable punch and looking smooth. Followed by a machinegun, being basically a better pistol, a hunting rifle – trading fire rate for ability to one-shot an enemy across half the map. Next up is crossbow, firing magical bolts capable of piercing walls as well as enemies, a mortar allowing the player to manually detonate grenades for greater control, and finally a riveter – essentially a rapidly firing rocket launcher. As icing on the cake, this line-up includes a magical sword taking on new properties based on the player’s current health. Curiously, every weapon can be acquired during the first episode out of three, provided you find them in the secrets. However, all of these shiny murder-toys would mean little without a worthy array of monsters to point them at.

Touch from the beyond
DUSK provides a considerable variety of meat for the grinder, introducing fresh types of enemies at a steady pace. While the opponents are designed to visually fit the episode of their origin, they all share a characteristic of being ostentatiously evil. Even the more mundane cultists and soldiers, have their faces obscured to strip a faintest notion of humanity. Less evident but equally important is how long-range enemies have a distinct visual clue, allowing the player to easily recognise priority targets over large areas – such as flashing green light on the side of otherwise grey turret. An important facet of the game’s enemies is that DUSK has no hitscanners – every ranged enemy in the game fires a projectile that can be dodged or blocked, however their speed varies greatly between difficulty levels. For a truly retro, punishing experience Cero Miedo is highly recommended, as frankly DUSK isn’t particularly challenging for a significant part of its runtime.
On the danger note, the definite cherry on top of the mound of corpses is DUSK’s oppressive atmosphere. It’s quite unique how this title manages to be legitimately eerie at times, despite the player being in control of an unstoppable murder machine. Yes, you may have just shot 40 cultists but somehow monstrous wheezing down your neck on a dark staircase still gets under your skin. There are multiple aspects coming together to earn DUSK its “Horror” tag. Perhaps chief among them would be the soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, full of both creepy ambient and heavy riffs ready to boot during the thickest of fights.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2792093111
Another key component would be the level design itself. Each one of the three episodes has a distinct visual theme to it. Level scale and visual quality are also steadily increasing. Admittedly DUSK starts slow in that regard, with first episode of the foothills starring relatively mundane mix of run-down rural areas and mines. However, already at this early stage, this title hints that it is fully aware of the player’s expectations and aims to sweep the rug from under their feet whenever possible. As soon as, the second episode begins, the game starts to gradually unveil its hand, introducing a myriad of memorable set pieces. Episode two has an industrial aesthetic which becomes increasingly infernal, while the final chapter is both gothic and otherworldly. Despite its chunky looks, DUSK proves that low-poly truly can be an artstyle with its legitimately impressive visuals.
Rats in the walls
Last but not least noteworthy aspect of the game is DUSK’s many secrets. In a truly retro fashion even the smallest level contains several of them, stashed away behind off-coloured wall or a hidden switch. Some secrets may appear a little crazy at first, however there is an inherent logic behind them and once you find a couple, treasure hunting suddenly becomes easier and more fun. Take note that on higher difficulty levels secrets are a must, as they don’t include extras but crucial means of survival.
When it comes to issues with this title, I would legitimately struggle to find any at all. I have noticed but a single minor bug throughout my replays - how enemies occasionally struggle to spot the player going up the stairs, idly exposing themselves to damage. Furthermore, the deathmatch multiplayer mode of Duskworld is dead as a doornail. Its existence is a nice touch however, do bring your friends if you wish to try it out.
All things considered, DUSK truly is a prime example of its chosen genre. If you are a PC gaming veteran hailing from a faraway land of the 90’s, DUSK is a nostalgia trip bound to tick all the right boxes. Should you happen to enjoy shooters in general, this title is a modern classic worthy of the moniker. Beating DUSK feels like completing a crazy fun fair ride – the moment it ended and the rush faded away, I felt compelled to yell “again” and hop right back into it.

Introduction
Dusk is a fast-paced first-person shooter that was developed by New Blood Interactive. It offers some challenging gameplay for those that are looking for that classic retro game experience while containing a Quake and Doom-like feel. Dusk also has a ton of secrets for you to find and collect. It shows us what a game should be made of to make it something worth playing as a whole.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Fast-paced gameplay that is sure to test your skill
- Tons of collectibles to find throughout the levels
- Nice guns to use to take out enemies
- An awesome soundtrack that is perfect for eliminating demons
- Nice retro-like graphics that feel like a quake game
Cons
- Beginning every chapter, you lose all the weapons you collected throughout the previous mission
Story
The story for Dusk is left unclear but there are some insights into how it begins. It starts with Duskdude (yes that’s his name) whom, after some absence from home for an unknown period of time, The Cult invaded his hometown and sacrificed his family members. Duskdude then later wakes up in a cellar when a mysterious edgy voice sends some Leathernecks to kill him.
Duskdude is of course pissed and kills all three of them and then decides to go and avenge his family by killing more demons, cultists, and much more. He also hates these rat enemies that typically die in one hit but will still manage to get a hit or two off. I agree with him on this one as I hate them too, annoying little rats.
Gameplay
You will be fighting all sorts of demons on your adventures and the game will certainly give you a hard time. The challenge may be tough, but I myself found it fair. Make sure to save often because if you die, you have to reset the entire level again or go back to the last time you saved. Trust me, doing a large part of the level over again is not fun.
You will be going around each and every level collecting keys that will help unlock doors. However, Dusk is filled to the brim with collectibles, there are a ton of secrets that you can go out and find, like getting a gun earlier than usual or silver Chaos Emeralds.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2707230469
There are a few neat weapons available to help take out enemies. I am talking about pistols, shotguns, an assault rifle, and every Quake/Doom fan's favorite weapon, the Super Shotgun. All of the weapons are very fun to use and each of them does have its own uses in certain situations that will help turn the tide of battle.
The only issue I have with the guns is that each time you start a new chapter, you lose all the weapons that you have collected. I understand that this may be to prevent completing the entire game early, but I just wish I was rewarded by keeping the guns I had with me when I collected them.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack is awesome, it has some really nice metal that is perfect for taking out demons and bringing the chaos. My favorite song has to be the main menu theme as it sets the tone for what you can expect in the game as a whole.
Graphics and Performance
The graphics are very retro-like and that fits with the creepy atmosphere that Dusk has, it’s something I rather like. I tested the game on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor 3.50, with16 GB of RAM, experiencing a smooth experience with no problems.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2789705607
Final Verdict
Dusk is a fantastic shooter that is well worth the money, it has some really fun gameplay that I myself enjoyed from start to finish. It offers everything that a game should have and that’s what makes it something worth trying out. I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of shooters like Doom, Quake, or Serious Sam.

Story:
DUSK is very light on plot as it's main focus is gameplay, but there is somewhat of a plot going on in the game. You play as Dusk Dude. Through his travels he comes across a rural town of Dusk and the place is overrun with weird cultists and military fighting each other while you're caught in their crossfire and as you plunge deeper into the town you find that there's something otherworldly waiting to be unleashed.
Dusk is one of those games where you have to piece the story together yourself. However I feel like the visuals and the way the story advances is so interesting it actually helps the player to really get into the bizarre world of Dusk better. Honestly some of the moments in Episode 3 especially were just simply amazing.
Graphics:
DUSK goes for that boomer shooter aesthetic (think Quake) and honestly it nails it perfectly. I loved everything about it's visual design, from the crazy environments to the great enemy designs. There's a great range of enemies from normal looking military grunts and cult members and then once the creatures get unleashed then you get even more crazy and creepy looking enemies.
The environments are also really great and honestly I really loved how varied these environments are. From farms to caves and military camps and others I don't want to name. Also the game manages to mix colors so well that I honestly was in awe, one moment you can be exploring a very mute looking farmhouse and then soon you can be exploring a pretty colorful looking temple, DUSK knows when to use colors to it's advantage and it works really well.
Audio:
First of all I have to give props to Andrew Hulshult for the soundtrack which kicks so much ass. There's plenty of absolutely great tracks that match the hectic tone of the fights and then there's tracks that match the creepy tone it goes for, it's just so well made that I can't really give enough praise.
Other sound effects like guns sounds incredibly meaty and I could never get sick of the super shotgun blowing enemies into chunks, it was just music to my ears. Every gun sounds like it packs quite the punch and honestly after so many disappointments I'm glad this one nails it perfectly.
Gameplay:
DUSK is again very similar to the shooters of the 90's and by that I mean you will kill everything that moves and look around the environment to find keys so you can advance further. I have to say that DUSK plays like an absolute dream. Everything from the movement, to the shooting just mixes so well that I loved every single minute playing it.
The levels are designed in a way so you can strafe jump around fast enough around the enemy attacks and gun them down with quick aiming it's so satisfying, especially when you enter an arena where there's an army of enemies and you slaughter them all like a total badass.
The game is split across three episodes and honestly each progressing episode gets better as it goes along. Episode 3 was especially amazing, because the scale of the fights and set pieces are unlike anything in the previous two episodes and it serves as the perfect culmination to the story.
However there is one minor nitpick of mine and that's the level design of Episode 2. I do think the episode is better than the first one overall, I can't say that I'm entirely huge on the level design. Quite a few of the levels felt a bit too cramped and got me killed a few times when I had simply no place to go to avoid enemies.
Verdict:
DUSK kicks ass, plain and simple. It's such a fun throwback shooter that I cannot recommend enough. It has tons of heart and it shows, from the fast paced and frenetic gameplay to the great soundtrack it just blends together so well I could not stop playing, not to mention the extra modes after you're done with the story make the price worth it. So just stop reading this and go get DUSK.
Final Rating:
9.5/10
Pros:
+ Incredibly fun gameplay
+ Awesome soundtrack
+ Visuals are great
+ Tons of content
+ Audio design is spectacular
Cons:
- Level design is pretty weak in Episode 2

Everything is close to perfection. from how the weapons feel, to movement speed and level design.
I got surprised quite a lot during the course of the game, and I'm not even half way finished with the levels.
A must play to any retro FPS fan. I feel I got teleported back to the 90's.

NEW
BLOOD
Id say this is the game that put them on the map and for good reason. Ever since then this publisher has been releasing and even helped develop this game.
Now that the fan-boyism is out of the way. I truly was engaged with this game. It feels authentically retro but at the same time, the controls are so tight. Theres no jank here. Its crisp clean satisfying movement with responsive weapons that are a pure joy to cycle through like the Doom Slayer.
The whole game is very well put together with a great ending. You can tell the passion and thought that went into all of it. The art style ramps up throughout the game, giving the player views of some astounding set pieces. When it really starts to get lovecraftian, thats the part I couldnt put the keyboard down and finished it in one sitting.
Right now I am setting up paint cans and Im about to Home Alone myself in the head so hopefully I will have brain damage and can replay this game like new. Trust me, itll be worth it.

Pros:
- The movement is effortless, it merges with the game-play so well its like ice-cream, because butter doesn't taste nice enough for it to be a good comparison
-the Guns, how many Call of duty games have you played where these useless hunks of tin are unsatisfying, or useless? probably quite A-lot, in Dusk, everything works, there isn't a useless or unsatisfying weapon in the game, and they all work in the context of the game, your never too low on ammo for it to be a problem, and ultra power-full weapons like the Riveter, this ammo goes along way.
- Difficulty, this game will whop your ass, it is challenging, i played it all the way through and beat it on normal, it took some dedication, but, i never once felt cheated when i died, and i never was in a situation where the death wasn't always 100% my fault.
-looks/ environment/ setting, masterpiece 10/10, this game is mostly a horror shooter, in its setting, and for a game that looks how it does (intentionally), it pulls it of very well!
the graphics are kinda like early 3D games mixed with some PS1 vertex shit.
-foes, all though all brilliant, well placed, well animated and all very Spooky, there (unfortunately) isn't allot to say about them they're all good though and the game would be half of what it is, if it just had some shit Cod grunts
Cons
- the levels where they strip you of your flashlight are annoying as shit, especially as they are the only levels you really would need it, but they are all somewhat short.
conclusion
9.5/10
up there as about my 3rd best game of all time
notes:
wont be replaying it, as it would tear me a new one.

Most modern retro games use modern lighting effects and physics, which are great but also require more system resources than you would expect from a retro game. Dusk ain't like that, and it doesn't suffer for it at all. So even if all you have to play this game on is a potato you should still get a crispy framerate out of it. And you'll want that crispy framerate, 'cause like I said earlier the movement in this game is great. Fast, fluid, and rewards skill. I got this as a bundle with Amid Evil. Amid Evil is pretty fun, but if you only pick up one title from this developer make it DUSK.

However the way the gameplay/levels are designed, makes it into a mindless shooter in terms of difficulty/challenge. In most levels, you'll have the opportunity to corner-peek. Which is very boring, there's only a 'handful' of sections that aren't like that (like the 2nd to last level). Some parts you're even encouraged to do so with enemy placements and cover.
I mean come on, why should you be able to do this in a boss fight?
https://youtu.be/1l1ALyYDRIo
You have options to experiment with the gameplay though, which can make it more fun. If you're aggresive you have the option to bunnyhop, bunnyhop sideways, walk sideways faster, crounch/crounch-slide which are really nice movement options.
The arsenal is also pretty satisfying and enemies can explode into gibs with explosive weapons. There is a crossbow weapon which goes through anything.
I also really liked the art-style of the game.
If you don't mind a mindless shooter, then you'll like this. But if you're looking for a more challenging game that requires more from the player - then you'll be disappointed.

intro
This one slided into my top fav games. If you enjoy the likes of The Ultimate Doom - don't even think and get the game. I went on for a completionist route while playing(messed up a bit in some maps but whatever), that's why I have 21-22 hours though the game is much shorter, but that's not a negative thing- the gameplay duration is quite optimal imho. Finding secrets was quite enjoyable- you get a better understanding of where they might be placed at as you continue to progress through the maps, so the game does not give you an impossible challenge at those. Music was spot on, it's another memorable thing from the game.
umm
I'm a sucker for retro-pixelated graphics so visuals were an art bliss for me, most of the maps were quite memorable due to their level design and aesthetic. It did get a bit dull into mid-episode 2, a few maps there felt a bit lacking and stale- visually they felt too empty and exploration of the map did not feel as engaging as those that were before or after. But as I said just a few maps were like that, so that was not a big deal as there are 33(3 of them being secret)maps in the game. I wish there were more variation in mob types, new enemy types do get introduced as you progress and there's actually almost enough of them but I'd like to see more due to my selfish cravings^^ Oh and the multiplayer side is a bit dead, I did not expect much out of it but still.

this game is perfectly fair, when i die i NEVER blame it on the game which is cool, yeayeayea cool game blasting demons and stuff yea awesome cool yeayea!!!!!
great controls, feels like butter to super strafe, the backwards flip awesome zero gravity cool stuff you can do midair is AWESOME but implemented and used a little strangely for some levels. the weapon selection so far is awesome and it feels great to find something new every now and then.
soundtrack is radical and fits veryvery well for this game, it ROCKS MY TEETH OUT!!!!!!!!! YEAAAAAAAAAA >:)
graphics are superb and very customizable which i like quite a lot. choosing your own crosshair is a great addition and all the others are also very useful (changing the colour palette was a suprising addition but a very neat one)
art design is pretty good, like the levels are designed nicely and look pretty HELLISHly so yeayea, however a lot of the enemies are pretty bland to look at, this game needs more REAL demon-like-demons i'd say YEAYEAYEA!!!!!!! >:)
i like the bouncy pad thingz
not bad
pretty good
pretty good(x2) 9/10 ~ incredible game, just needs more DEATH and cooler enemies.
i hope to see this game with a big doom-style modding community someday, it's very underrated in my eyes.

- Excellent gunplay and movement
- Creative level design that only gets stronger the further along you get
- Unique enemies that change every episode as to not get stale
- Killer music by the king of classic FPS composers Andrew Hulshult
- Incredible atmosphere that is both creepy and hilarious at times
- The game just exudes personality and confidence, it fully respects the players intelligence and doesn't force you to play a certain way
The only negatives I have with the game are that the weapons (while effective) are a little bland looking and not very creative. The bosses are mostly just circle strafe affairs (with an exception), and the main character you play as doesn't have a personality (or a voice even) like Build Engine protagonists do and I think that is a missed opportunity more than anything else. And that's about it as far as complaints go, Dusk is incredible and you owe it to yourself to play it even if old school FPS is something you have never delved into before.
Strong 9/10

What I really liked in this game, is the music. It's rock, original beats and really pumping for the action. When the game is slowing down, then the soundtrack is really mysterious about it. Other sound effects are all right in the game, didn't sound boring for me, but the music is top notch, definetly AAA level.
What is definetly need to be mentioned, is the controls. Like usually I don't care too much about it, but playing this game is really fluent. The controls are easy, you don't need to use lot of buttons, there are no hicups in it, works perfectly. You can customize the controls pretty well too in the settings, so this is definetly a top notch job, too.
Time to talk about the gameplay, which is definetly old school FPS gameplay. You start one point on a level, and you need to reach the end of it. You get weapons to collect, you need ammo for it and you need to take care of the enemies, which are different and there are a good amount of them in the game. You need to find keys to advance on the map or you can look for secrets to get more resources. On some levels you need to fight bosses, which are also really fun and not too hard in general. About the difficulty, I played on Cero Miedo for the first time, and it wasn't that bad. It was challanging, but definetly not hard or impossible, so I would say the difficutly is all right in the game, but don't play on the first two difficulty levels in my opinion. I really do like the gameplay, however around the half of the game, for me the game start to get more twist than it should have. I really wanted to take out everyone and go on my way, which is also on some level was a way, but other levels are was annoying, because I needed to look for a switch or find my way to go, which I really didn't liked it, because sometimes it's hidden. Obviously the game needs some variaty, but I had some issues with it. I wouldn't say it's game braking or bad, but it made me mad a little bit. In general, gameplay is all right, it's lot of fun, but for me later parts become more annoying a little bit then fun.
Time to talk about the graphics, which is retro... obviously. The best part about this, is you can customize it really well that some games would want these settings in general. I like the graphics, however some people wouldn't like this, because it's looks old, but that's the point. Effects also really good looking too.
About the story... in general it's really nothing much. The player wouldn't even notice it, if it not pay attention to it, but I think there is more under the surface, then you think. I liked it really much, especially the last chapter making a lot of interesting moments about it, but also I think the game should expanded a little more and not just around the end. Truth to be told, the game progressivly making the story through out the game, but the background story is nowhere near.
DUSK is an exceptional FPS game with really good values. You can find some nitpicking points about this game, but to be honest, this is a really well made FPS game to take out the Steam and also to have nostalgia about the older FPS games, which was about challange and not the pretty graphics or deep story. I'm a person who likes deep stories, but if the game give me tons of fun and challange, I think this is something I can live without it. I can definetly recommend this gem, not even mentioning the multiplayer mode and endless mode to play it and other challanges for the story. 17€ for the game is I think a good price, comparing what you get in the 6 hour story + multiplayer + other gamemode.

Take Quake, Blood, and the crossbow from Heretic, add a bit more horror/surreal thematic, and you've got DUSK. It's old-school action in a modern-day perspective, with most of the crappy aspects of the past games gone. You have fluid movement, great enemy designs, excellent/balanced/purposeful weapon designs (hell I've even used the pistol to pick off weaker enemies when I wanted to save my AR ammo and it felt useful), fun and rewarding secrets to find, great powerups, and to top it all off, a kickass soundtrack that hits in all the right places atmospherically.
The game has 30 (
33
) levels so it is a bit short compared to other similar games, but you can tell each level was crafted with love and dedication. Plus people are making their own maps, so that's something fun to look forward to. Replayability is encouraged with an 'awards' system for each level that gives you a title based off accomplishments. Endless mode is hectic. I played through the game to 100% on the normal difficulty and always felt it wasn't too easy or too hard. I can definitely see myself playing through this game again on harder difficulties.
I've played DN3D, SW old-school & the two new games, Unreal 1, Quake 1 & 2, Heretic, Hexen 1, some Blood, and everything HL-related except Alyx. This game takes second place on the pedestal only barely being surpassed by HL2. There's a reason DUSK has a 98% steam rating. It's worth every penny and every minute of playtime. I just picked up AMID EVIL and can't wait to see what else New Blood Interactive can do!

Dusk is probably one of the best FPS ever, at the very least of FPS in this style. Amazing horror atmosphere, great soundtrack, gameplay is top tier, definitely a must play, especially if you're a fan of first person shooters.

for 1) you have a nice arsenal of toys and gadgets which you can SHOOT (maybe aim?) at enemys for your ENJOYMENT!!!
2) you pull the trigger and shoot a bullet right at the enemy and might even HIT their skull which makes them die faster and give them bone and skull fracture in the skull
3) ok this is where it gets AWESOME. you get to have 3 EPISODES of maps that connect to eachother to next levels where you are challenged to fight more of your enemies and you procceed to the next destination where you are forced and Maybe challenged to slaughter all the meat (which I repeat is your ENEMY they are not your friends ok)
4) this is where it gets GOOD
if u press R you flip your weapon its kinda like flipping the bird except your weapon is flipping and you can HURT your enemy which makes them suffer and maybe DIE if you keep doing it. :D
5) badass priests who say HERETIC!!! it might be a reference to the classic Raven software Game Hexen!
6) I love this one soooooooooooooooo much so please read this one if u wanna decide your purchase and your money investment. theres a dog called Dog Cart and it drives around really whacky and funny and it shoots at you if u make it feels weird and uncomfortable but honestly I think it might be pissed at you and make it want to shoot you for its own fun. Sorry I made it sounds a little weird.
7) Run, Duck, Survive, Craft and Survive the night and be sure to Stay alive during daylight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a classic shooter, and it does a good job at being that.
Classic shooters are all about fast paced shooting, so there's not much else to review.
Movement is good, gunplay is good.
The only downside that I can think of is that secrets can sometimes be an indistinguishable part of a wall.
So if you want to be a completionist, you have to annoyingly spam buttons everywhere, which I don't like.
This genre is not for everyone, but if you dig classic shooters, then I can recommend this game at a price of around €15.

This is not your standard DOOM/QUAKE/DUKE clone... I don't know how, but the game managed to take all the things that made classic 90's Shooters great and somehow even enhanced every little detail of it... Just a perfectly balanced, fun and bloody good Shooter!! And this little pearl was mainly made by JUST ONE DUDE...

-take Quake as a base;
-mix it with Blood and Heretic (but filter out the hitscanners, they're like raisins and nobody likes those);
-pour a helping of Half Life;
-add the secret ingredients (it's love and fresh thinking);
-let it burn in the fires of Hell for about 10 minutes;
-sprinkle with a tinge of Painkiller.
DUSK is a retro-styled FPS created by a group of talented people as a love letter to the late '90s/early '00s shooter genre. It follows the Intruder (or DuskDude) as he shoots his way through three episodes of possessed hilbillies, demonic military personnel and worse while trying to uncover what started it all.
Right off the bat it's clear the visual representation is highly inspired by Quake, going so far as to deliberately make textures low-resolution and feature far fewer polygons than other games of today's age. There's even a pixellization level for those who want to feel like they're actually gaming on a 386. This doesn't stop the weapons from feeling threatening, nor does it stop the enemies from being rather impressive and in some cases downright scary. Additionally, unlike Quake, Dusk does not run away from having a wider range of colours present in its levels as well as subtle particle effects. The audio side especially is impressive, with weapon sounds feeling meaty and satisfying. This is where the killer tunes of the soundtrack also come in, grungy and rusty and dripping with atmospheric dread during the quiet moments before pumping you full of adrenaline for the bigger fights.
The gameplay is straightforward. You run around collecting weapons, ammo and health, and you're trying to get to the end of the level while plowing through all the enemy-shaped obstacles in your path. On the way you'll be required to find keys in order to open doors, and in the process may yet find secrets leading you to extra weapons, items and easter eggs. Sometimes there's also bosses to kill (or not). The weapons available are standard FPS fare and you've seen all of them before, with maybe the exception of the Crossbow whose projectiles pierce all enemies. It's all rather simple, and it doesn't need anything else because the level design compensates heavily. None of the levels took me more than 12 minutes, they're all intuitively built, impressive to behold and a blast to go through. On top of this, there are still some elements of gameplay reminiscent of Half Life or deeper games, where you can stack objects on top of each other to reach secrets or skip over areas, or where you're able to light campfires, pick up an enemy's guts, cook them over the campfire and devour them for a boost in health.
I'm not sure what else to say here. DUSK is the definition of short but sweet, built out of reverence for the 'good ol' days' yet infusing some New Age energy into the design. If you're a fan of high-octane frantic fragging Dusk is for you, and even if you're not, it's still very accessible for any kind of gamer. And if the singleplayer campaign did not tide you over, jump into Duskworld together with numerous other fraggers of all skill levels and shoot at each other while bunny-hopping like madmen and using the physics engine to your advantage. Lastly, if you want even more, the same group of people are now working on Gloomwood, a Thief-styled game with their own touch, so you've got something to look forward to!

It exceeded in capturing the spirit of old fps in a single game while feeling new and refreshing at the same time. The low poly graphics really adds to the charm, the three episodes feel incredibly unique and distinct from each other. what really sets this game apart from the rest is it's take on eldritch horror - which I really dig in games. That being said, the game can go from you blasting away baddies to a banger soundtrack (which oh, we'll certainly get to in a moment) to feeling claustrophobic and isolated and scared. You could be armed to the teeth and you'd still feel scared and it's glorious. Not only that, but the game twists and turns in ways that would mess with the player's expectations, and get super interesting.
The weapons all feel super useful and fun to use, the enemies are just as fun to fight, the level design is absolutely incredible, and the soundtrack. Holy Shit the soundtrack - Andrew Hulshult has made tracks that are not only absolute bangers - maybe even some of my favorite songs in gaming, but also ones that are either atmospheric or just downright terrifying. The sound design is satisfying and the movement is fast and just as satisfying. The boss fights are also fun and the developers snuck some memes in that are in a way that they won't get in the way of the pacing, which is good.
Endless mode is also a thing - 3 maps, and just you against a horde of monsters to see both how much points you can rack up, and how long you survive. it's definitely tricky on higher difficulties, which for me is what makes it fun. There's also Duskworld, the game's multiplayer which, sadly, seems underpopulated at the moment. There is a Discord for the game however, where I believe people host tournaments. If anything else, you could always play the multiplayer with your friends.
Overall, this game is absolutely amazing in what it achieves to be - it combines the fast paced action, weapons, and enemies of old school fps and ties eldritch horror elements into the mix. The soundtrack is beautiful and the other modes are alot of fun.
So go sip on some Boomer juice - it's another 666/10!

- DUSK is a throwback to shooters from the 90's, one I'd say passes with flying colors. Bunny hopping, secrets, par times, and just being in your face. It's all here!
- The sound effects were the first thing that stuck out to me. Everything you'll hear, from picking up ammo to hitting an enemy, all sounds so crispy. The music is great for what you're doing too. Some kickass metal for the arena parts, and chilling ambiance in between.
- There are things added to the formula so simple yet so effective. A mind-boggling level like Escher Labs and a powerup where time only moves when you move proves there's still innovation to be had.
I say it's worth trying for any fan of shooters, especially ones at the genre's roots.
You'll never look at soap the same way again.
In conclusion Dusk is a fantastic game for old school gamers and zoomers alike and I greatly recommend picking it up when you can.
Further notes: The game also features a developing modding scene from it's SDK called Dawn as well as a multiplayer mode called Dusk World which despite being an enjoyable experience lacks modes beyond death match and is seemingly dead outside of the occasional community discord event or curious players. both of these are far removed from the classic campaign and do not fit into the main part of this review but I will note that I find both to be thoroughly enjoyable and good additions to the game.

It captures the gameplay and esthetics of a 90s shooter absolutely flawlessly and with a soundtrack that rivals DOOMs. It´s a no bullshit game: reloading, fall damage, drowning, sprinting?- GONE; all to make a gameplay experience of pure nostalgia and fun. The levels (especially later in the game) are extremely creative and nonlinear with some great and unique enemies. It´s gorgeous, but won´t fry your PC. The soundtrack is my favourite out of any game. Period.
It´s a straight up masterpiece 17/10
Thank you David, Dave and of course Andrew for this work of art :)

200 character summary
Dusk is an amazing fast paced horror FPS in the style of the classics. It has great level design with keys and weapons that feel just right, The sound is stellar, Also has Online and workshop support.
Story & Characters 7/10
There is a story, and it is pretty interesting with a nice ending, But it is played out with text in the beginning, Which is a real bummer, I loved what they did with Ion Fury. Surely you play and go trough some scenery, hear some voices and you can kinda make up what is going on, But the story did not really catch me sadly. But I am glad to confirm that the gameplay more than makes up for it.
Gamemodes & Gameplay 10/10
The game has a few gamemodes, You can play the campaigns, There are 3 episodes, and each episode has 11 levels, 10 normal ones and a secret level then you have a great endless mode where you can just kill waves of demons on 3 different maps one from each of the episodes. Then the game has a online mode, where you can kill eachother in an arena with 16 players max.
The gameplay is extremely fast paced, You move with high speeds and so do the enemies, There is no fall damage and you can even do flips mid air. There are jumppads which set you flying high. There are also powerups which enables you to climb walls, make you fire faster or Time only move when you move like in SUPERHOT. In DUSK you will kill demons with speed and style.
There is some great level design, The levels are pretty big, with the exception for boss levels. Most levels have a lot of keys which force you to explore a bit, There is not a lot of searching, unless you go for all secrets, The levels are packed with enemies, You will be shooting a lot in this game, But the game also gives you time to explore and enjoy the atmosphere
It really feels like a classic, the graphics, All the hidden mechanics are there. The keys, enemies. You can pick up almost everything and jump further by using explosives. It is like a FPS heaven with a lot of references to the classics. There are 10 great weapons to collect which all are pretty unique and have their place and ideal circumstances.
Graphics & Soundtrack 10/10
Yes it looks like a 90s FPS, But that's the style. there is a lot of detail in the textures and the levels are huge and look amazing. The soundtrack is just perfect, It is a Metal soundtrack, very nicely done. It is almost quiet at spooky moments which really enhances the horror elements, but it goes all out as soon as you are in a gunfight. Here the Metal kicks in and switches to a no time for fear atmosphere.
Performance & Support 7/10
The game has a few small things like Powerup sounds continue if you are in the pauze menu. It has these minor graphical glitches in the loading screens and the level select screen, But none of them ingame. Duskworld does not support controllers and if you try to launch it from Dusk it fails, You can manually start Duskworld from Steam tho. Other than that the game runs very smoothly I got between 90 and 150 fps on ultra. I read that the game will go open source, So I think it is based on GPL code? So even if the dev won't fix it before then, the community will. I have good faith these minor issues will be fixed.
Endgame & Replayability 9/10
The game does well in replayability, Especially for a FPS with a story mode. Ofcourse it has the online multiplayer which offers endless fun, Endless is a nice extra if you just like to shoot and kill. And the campaign has level select with a lot of secondary objectives which you can strive to complete. The game already has Mod support, And Steam Workshop is coming soon, So the game potentionally has endless content.
Improvements
Surely the small issues need to get fixed, And ofcourse I would love to see more episodes, Other than that there are some things that could improve. Endless is a very nice extra, I just feel it could be more, Make us able to spend our score for keys to unlock areas with stronger weapons or who knows, The score attack mode is nice, But I think it could be more enjoyable if you took a little bit from the COD zombies games. We are also missing Online gamemodes. There is just Deathmatch, And nothing else, What happened to Teams, CTF, etc.
Workshop
The game does not have workshop support yet. It will come soonish, The game has mod support already tho, You can already play many classics with the DUSK engine, Classics like Half Life and Quake are fully remade inside of DUSK. If you like modding DUSK is surely a game to add to your wishlist.
Conclusion 9/10
DUSK is like a mix between all the classics from the 90s, it took the best parts of them all, what made them unique and mashed it all together into 1 massive game. It is a must have for any classic FPS fan, Even people who don't like the graphics should just squint their eyes for one of the best FPS games of this decennia. It is an absolute must have.

The retro 90s style really proves that the looks of a game are not all what matters. The eerie soundtrack from Andrew Hulshult is immersing and definitely has affected the atmosphere of the game.
The first Episode, is just the beginning as you start off in maps similar to that of Redneck Rampage as you spray down Cultists and Odd looking deer type creatures which fire red projectiles at the player.
As you progress into the second episode, the theme gets scarier as you start to enter unusual dungeon style maps and abstract void like areas which get even creepier once you start to see some of the freakier enemy types.
This game pays homage to its inspirations such as Quake, Redneck Rampage, Blood, Heretic and many other games from the 90s/Early 2000s with its chunky textures, spooky atmosphere and key collecting madness as you try to push your way through hordes of enemies.
There are “Completionist” rewards you can gain at the end of every level which if you get the reward in every level you will be granted an achievement, this involves you finding every secret on each level and also killing every enemy in the level, dont fear as there are plenty of walkthroughs on YouTube which can help guide you in finding all of the secrets so it isn’t that difficult.
There are some fun aspects of this game too, for example you can obtain a Cigar which you can smoke on, or you can excessively drink alcoholic substances which in addition to regaining health, they make you nauseated. But probably one of the funniest easter egg is the bar of soap which you can get in every level and if you pick it up in everly level you get an achievement, aswell as that you can chuck it at any enemy and it will die in an instant, including bosses which is quite fun yet defeats the challenge.
Overall, this game is fantastic and definitely worth picking up if you are a fan of old 90s shooters or you are just interested in picking up something different to the overwhelming garbage which is defecated out annually by greedy fucks who are only looking for putting micro transaction money in their pockets.

Dusk is hardcore, amazing, atmospheric, scary, and gives me the same feeling in certain parts that Doom 2016 gives where you get to just tear into your enemies.
