Allen anderen rate ich (derzeit – Nov. 2020) vom Kauf ab.
Es gibt zu viele „Kleinigkeiten“ die sich Summieren;
- Fertigseitenbeschreibungen sucht man vergeblich
- „Herodeck“ mit 4 Helden, like DD2

Einfach so lächerlich..

It feels handhold-y and I struggle to see many of the changes as beneficial. It would be much better if there was a classic-gameplay mode to let us use the old UI and be rid of these poor changes, so we can enjoy the original experience with a few extra maps and a new visual flair.

Animations are played in lower fps (locked 30 or even lower i think) which is specialy noticeable on enemies and how they move ... it just looks choppy.
The tutorial is a friggin joke and more confusing than helpful.
The ui is bugged and design decisions within the whole game are partialy very questionable.
Also multiplayer currently is only partialy functional with no working matchmaking/browser.
I got this one in the bundle with DDGR and thats the only reason i will keep it ... i know they work on all 3
games and all are highly compatible with each other so we will get new content and fixes confirmed!
I just hope they will fix this game!
The biggest difference between this and DD2 is ... its a complete game not trimmed on micro transactions. You get access to all heroes in the game and can respec at any time cost-free and it also introduces a new mechanic called rifted.
So you have rifted aka stronger enemies and those can drop rifted items ... its a new mechanic where you need to balance your characters around the stronger thread.
Also maps and progression are kinda different so it has its right to exsist beside DD2.
But right now DD2 is still the better game!
Get this one in the bundle if you want the new DDGR to support the devs or skip and play DD2 instead!

Pros:
• Feels like DD1
• Easy to pick up and understand
• Reasonably fun with friends
• Cool boss fights
Cons:
• Unfinished game – very few updates – way less than DD2
• Dying playerbase – not many people to play with
• Too easy grind – I am all maxed out at 200 hours of play
• Becomes repetitive faster than DD2 or DD1
• Compared to DD1 or DD2 very low variety in maps and things to do
I myself started playing this game when Chromatic announced that they would abandon DD2 and focus on this game. I hoped to get a new DD1 which I loved and get all the cool mechanics and everything back. Partly that was fulfilled but at some point Chromatic went back to DD2. The playerbase of DDA declined fast when Chromatic decided to put out big new content for DD2 from 200 concurrent players in July/August 2021 to 60 in January 2022.
Anyone who is a Dungeon Defenders fan knows about the infamous “Dungeon Defenders Eternity” a game then “Trendy Entertainment” now “Chromatic games” released for a price of I believe it was 20$ and 50$ for the full bundle – then abandoned it and completely removed it off steam – you cannot buy it on steam any more. I worry that this game will have the same fate. The player numbers definitely indicate it. I am very sad about this and I wish for this game to succeed like DD1 did, but at this stage I doubt it. Thus I also feel like it won’t be worth the grind any more. If there are no people to play with it’s less fun. If you are searching for a Dungeon Defenders game to play with friends go for DD1 or DD2 – that one is free even!
I think this competition with the free to play DD2 just completely destroys DDA and unless they decide to make it free and add lots of content to buy in this game, I don’t see them putting lots of effort in it anymore.
It's sad and I wish that this game will have a great future. I will update this review in the future if some good updates will come again.

I usually don't write reviews but decided to because this game seems to get a lot of unwarranted hate from DD1 fans. I also loved DD1, played it for a few hundred hours, and was excited for the sequels, but neither of them really held my attention for very long until Awakened. So far I've racked up 80+hrs and the gameplay loop is solid enough that I'll probably get many more hours of entertainment out of my purchase.
Basically every review compares DD:A to DD1, and I get it, they are very similar there's no denying that. Yes, in a lot of ways it feels like a remaster, with 5 of the same heroes and a bunch of the same maps, but I didn't mind that too much honestly. It's been long enough since I played DD1 that I didn't remember the strats and builds I used to use, and had some good nostalgia moments.
There are also a couple of new heroes (that can be used and levelled from the get go, which provides some variance through the campaign) and some new maps - so far all have been made available for free via updates, you don't have to buy new heroes as you did in DD1. There are also a bunch of miscellaneous quality of life improvements. Is there as much content in DD:A as DD1 currently? No, but there has been more coming steadily since release.
Now as for the people crying about the game being 'kneecapped' to make it more Switch compatible - it runs fine, it looks good, and there are still absurdly large numbers of enemies on the screen at once in plenty of maps if that's important to you. The major change was that there is now a cap on the attack speed of your defences, and while I do see how this could detract from the fun of having your build just machine gun through waves of enemies, I personally really didn't find it that big of a deal. Your defences can still attack multiple times per second, and it didn't prevent me from having fun or ruin my experience. People seem to be highly passionate about this particular point, I guess it's subjective, you can make up your own mind about it.
You can pretty much get through the campaign on most difficulties except the hardest using whatever combination of heroes and defences you like, it's a good field to test out the strengths and weaknesses of different builds and see what you enjoy. The late game however currently has some balance issues, and there are some annoying bugs present, mainly in the UI.
In conclusion, if you had fun in DD1 you will likely have fun in DD:A. If the prospect of paying the full price for a pretty similar game irks you, just grab it during a sale.
This was way longer than initially intended, hope it helps someone, either way, have a great day :).

Is it possible to review DDA without comparing it to DD1? Not really. While I do like the addition of the auto loot filter system and the Hero Desk, I do miss using emulators to have 4 toons on screen to increase the end loot rewards as well as being able to tower/hero boost with one toon while fighting with another. I found the level scaling from 83 - 105 to feel absurdly painful compared to how quickly you can go from 1 - 70. I miss the days of grinding DD1 Tavern Defense PS to build up your toons. The art style, colors, and lighting for DDA never feel quite right to me and I much prefer the visuals of DD1. DDA’s character skins are also weak and make the character barely identifiable or viewable. Regarding content, DDA is working towards adding more, but it is very far behind from where DD1 was at this point in its release.
Despite all of this, I would still recommend the game for anyone looking for a fun, easy to learn, loot grind, then again, there is always DD1…

Instead of developing 2 separate versions of the game, they killed the PC version to make it work on switch.
I cannot recommend this game in it's current state, if they revert the changes they made or improve the game, then I will remove the negative review.
Go play DD1 or DD2, they are vastly better games with better playerbases. DD1 has x4 the playerbase of DDA.

The TL;DR: The first game, Dungeon Defenders, is still the best game in this series. It is packed with content, loaded with tons of fun maps and characters to play, and will provide hundreds of hours of enjoyment. You are given tons of meaningful choices and it is the best hybrid Tower Defense game I've played. Tower Defense + 3rd Person Action RPG. It's fantastic.
Awakened is an attempt to Reboot the franchise after they lost their way with DD2 and DD:E (which was ANOTHER attempt to remake the first game) and just falls way short. The performance feels worse, there's a lot less content, only about a third of the character choices that exist in the original, and everything just feels... Worse. Itemization is completely boring, and many of the fun aspects of the original (like being able to really supercharge your towers at high levels) are now a shadow of what once was.
For anyone with any interest in a Tower Defense / Action RPG mashup - do yourself a favor. Spend less money and buy the first game, simply titled Dungeon Defenders. I suspect you'll enjoy it more, because most of us did.

That being said, things have hardly changed much.
**Summary** (I'll have pros and cons listed lower)
The Devs on this game keep making sequals and prequals riding DD1's hype and success but yet never incorporate what made DD1 great in the first place. Replayability, Difficulty, and Freedom. Instead they shoved eye candy down our throats on a half baked potato promising it'll live to DD1's standards when in reality I think we all can agree we just want an ulta HD dd1 with better anticheat.
I have tried to give the Devs time and patients for many years and have concluded they all are garbage (the games) for 1 of the following 3 reasons
1) They grab the money and run
2) They are lazy and/or don't care
3) They literally have the worse game designer on the planet.
**Pros**
It's a really beautiful game.
It had a modern feel.
If you're just a casual and have a few hours to kill, then this game is fine.
**Cons**
It is extremely buggy
- Damage indicators and health don't show up half the time when you look directly at something
- I've had mobs just walk through barricades like it didn't exist.
UI and Looting System is a mess and anti-user friendly
- Bags are not bags. They are filters.
- You can hold max 500 items, thats about 2-3 games worth of stuff
- Auto collect settings is not in your inventory. It's in settings > gameplay > autoloot and the system is unclear how to use at first
This game was designed for the freaking Nintendo switch. Mobs are slow and EASY.
(12 hours in and I'm already hitting on massacre difficulty SOLO... Yeah.)
Stat caps and removal on literally everything.
- Armor only gives you defense buffs, never any hero buffs
- Can only upgrade stats and not the armor itself
- Pets are literal crap (lucky for 10-20% buff to something but get nerfed by 50%) Yeah...
- Hero Level Caps
- Once you reach nightmare your stats are buffed and nerfed at the same time? I'm guessing they got lazy and couldn't bother to incorporate actual progression.
Replayability
- Ever since DD1 I've hated the stat caps and rebalances. I've hated the minor changes they've made to DD1 the past few years. If it ain't broke don't fix it. If people want to spend hundreds of hours a week/month to play your game to become godlike, let them. Design your game to be sped run, you're irrelevant within 1-2 weeks.
Personal Opinion
Fire your game designer.

I would recommend Dungeon Defenders: Awakened to anyone looking for a fun, simple (more on this later), highly addicting game. The game has enough for casual experiences and a bit of depth for the hardcore min/maxer in us all. Fighting waves and waves of enemies to get showered in loot is a lot of fun and never gets old. .
Getting to the simplicity of the game. Though I recommend this game it is not without faults. The game is nowhere near what DD1 was early or late in it's lifecycle. With the implementation of Rift Mode the gameplay is watered down to an elementary level. There is no longer a need for resistance counterplay, all enemies are damaged by fusion and take more damage. The scaling with this fusion/rift gear and mobs is more health - more damage. Sirens have become completely irrelevant and simply serve to delay the progression of waves if one decides to linger. Build, weapon and armor diversity has been severely limited by this as well.
The games current scaling skews hard in the favor of the new toons, now this is not unheard of for a dev to make the new toons more powerful but in this instance they are far and above nearly making the base game toons irrelevant.
The interface of the game and technical mechanics of gear and stats is also watered down form DD1. The menus are clunky, unattractive and a pain to manage. There is no way to know or monitor the other players in game. If you are not listening for a hero yell (what they do when they spawn in) or monitoring your mini map you oftentimes won’t know there is anyone with you.
Graphically the game is nice to look at but after hours and hours you begin to notice corners cut. Textures and lighting are nice, but limited for a PC title in 2021 in UE4. This may be limited to the fact they are working to directly port the build to other platforms. - This has been a point of contention within the community and seemingly limits respected platforms from being their best.
Content is currently very light. In an effort to extend play time the loot tables are large, the floor is low and the ceiling is high even on maps and difficulties where the floor is to be raised to allow for more upgrades to be found. It does add more time for those who wish to keep searching for that next best item. However, due to the lack of content it feels more of an intentional effort to ensure concurrent numbers than to actually reward players.
One massive gripe is the tavern, the tavern of old is gone and an overly simplified disappointing excuse for a hub is in its place. You have stacks of trophies which is nice to have an in game visual of achievements. However the layout of these trophies seems lazy and an attempt to limit the size of the zone.

- Capped Attack Speed (Tower and Weapons... like that was the DD experience i know and loved)
- decreased Enemy spawn (like Survival wave 25 had only 500~ Spawns instead of 1.5k+)
No Wave feels challenging anymore :/
Hero stats and Builder stats now are fixed on specific Equipments like:
Head, Chest, Hands, Feet = Builder
Weapon, Off-hand, PETS = Hero
Come on! there are Builder specific PETS that are literaly useless now!
Every Equipment feels now the same, they should make those 4 armor sets that already exist more special like... i dunno... Miner set = Builder focused and Anchient set more Hero focused?
How everyting is like now i just cant recommend it, get Orcs Must Die or the Original Dungeon Defenders instead :U

This is now a switch game and all design/development changes are made entirely around whether it will make a switch lag. Do not ever expect good mob density, bigger maps, more towers, more aesthetically diverse graphical effects. Expect nothing.
This latest patch has pretty much ruined the few good things about the game, and now hard-capped it's performance to what a switch is capable of.
The upgrade system got gutted. The pet system got gutted. The hero dps system got gutted. The tower dps system got gutted.
Don't play it, save yourself some money.

This makes me sad since I personally love fast attacking defences. This also means a huge nerf to the Deadly Striker Tower, which is my personal favourite tower. The tower is capped at 1.00s per attack, which is very high and renders the tower no longer ideal for taking down swarms of enemies. The tower will now overkill small enemies even harder instead of killing more small enemies since attack rate is added to attack power after hitting the cap.
This also means at the end game, all you need is Power stat, since you will hit the Def. Rate cap easily through some random rolls.
This game basically has no future in receiving any sort of spec upgrades due to the Switch's specs not being able to handle them. I was enjoying this game immensely prior to this update, sad.

Fair warning to all!
This company did something absolutely ridiculous to this game. That is, despite massive backlash, to force downgrade an already released PC game to become a Switch game instead of making two version, or figuring out another way.
If you had any hopes for this game being a DD1 successor then that hope is now dead. This game will forever be shackled by the Switch conversion. Which means that they can never make this game run on something more than a potato, and gameplay will be locked to low mob density, low amount of towers, low attack rates etc. anything which would make a Switch lag. Forget about all those promises about modernising this game, and bringing it up to today's standards; that has all now become a flimsy facade.
This will go down in history as one of the most anti-consumer things a company has done to a game and it's fan/player-base. It is the first time I've heard of a company force downgrading an already released PC game to become a console game universally.
Quoting bellow directly from DDA News June 17. the reason why they did it. The Community Manager will give you another reason saying it was not because of the investment required to make two different version, and specify why it had to be this shortcut due to another long in the future promised solution being cross-save(Note: Not to be confused with cross-play of which they don't have any plans on implementing at this time). Which would just be another feature to put on the long list of soonTM promised things to come, and oh dear is that list becoming old and dusty. Personally, I like the honesty of how this news bellow from June 17 was written more than what the CM is trying to make us believe in the aftermath. I just wish they would have listened to the feedback instead of just saying they are... Anyway, I leave this bellow from June 17. for you to form your own opinions on it.
Zitat:
News17.June:
Defense Rate Changes
Before we get into everything else, we want to talk about Defense Rate changes. Through our development with the Switch, and throughout our certification process, our game was not able to perform with the speed at which towers were attacking, effectively making releasing on the Switch impossible (due to how towers calculate enemy positions, priorities, tons of AI tracking, VFX being played, damage calculations, etc.) because of how many resources they took to make those processes work. As a result, we’ve provided a cap for Defense Rate that caps most towers at 0.50 shots a second.
This brings in Defense Rate overflow. Basically what this means is when you pump Defense Rate into a tower, that stat is rolled over into Defense Power instead. This means that while some towers will be attacking slower than before, they will be hitting harder to compensate for the Defense Rate cap (so the stat is not wasted). This includes any Defense Rate increase that you would get from boosting a tower using Overcharge or Speedy Gemstone for example.
We had to act pretty fast on this to ensure we can release it on Nintendo Switch. We discussed having two different versions (a Switch version with the lowered rates), but that just isn’t possible for us to maintain with a team of our size. Balancing it and making it fair would be impossible, and there might be metas where playing certain content on one platform may be easier than others, which is something we want to avoid entirely.
We’re looking to get as much feedback as possible here to make sure this change feels good while allowing us to fulfill our promise of releasing on Nintendo Switch.

If you're curious about what happened after the news dropped then here is a short recap: Website link
Note that they didn't even mention this change in the live patchnotes here , but it is now live in the game.
Final note: I will probably not pay attention to this thread, or defend my review since I'm not interested in this company anymore. Just felt this drastic change to the game deserved a community warning, but feel free to form and share your own opinions on it with whoever else reads this.
Edit: My response to the devs: Link (Warning: lengthy and boring)

The best part about dungeon defenders 1,2 etc.. is the fact that you can play with friends. Finding gear together and trading or giving it to others as well. To me the game feels nothing more like a single player game. If anything you are almost at an advantage playing by yourself because the waves are easier..
If you can't trade for gear and you are hard stuck. The only way to progress is to literally join someone else farming a map you can't even complete and leech the items off the waves. And even then if they get a drop you can't trade it?.. Matter as well not have people in the game with you if the drops are unique to the individual.
DD1 was amazing. Why would you change the best aspects of the game that were perfectly fine into something worse.
Not playing again until there is trading.. Already beat mostly all the maps haven't played since the new releases because it's pointless if you are going to just play by myself and can't trade.

Now for the real complaint that makes me want to review this. The number of bugs for the size of a dev team, and content available is staggering. Collusion detecting and physics are all over the place. There are inconsistencies with warping out of bounce, enemy AI glitching, getting stuck in walls, AI vectors screwing with your character which sends you flying and so. The UI definitely needs improvement and left out a lot of inventory management features like folders from the first game.
What really gets me is that the AI issues from the first are still prevalent in the remake, which makes me think it's a copy and paste of used assets. Getting stuck in walls, projectiles going through walls, and enemies getting stuck on the path are just some of the issues I can see that are similar. It really feels like a rushed product that should have got the upgrade it deserves. I don't understand the content path-ing going forward and it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth that this overpriced game is not even close to being done.
There are not enough fingers on my hands to count the times a bug had cost a run. And at that point it's just a complete waste of time. Something totally out of your control ruins the gaming experience. With a $10 game, you know what you're getting into. But this game just should not be at this price point. There is plenty of tower defense and indie games out there that would provide more value to the customer than this game atm.
Buy this game when the entire map and character selection is available

I also played DD2. DDA left out a few things that I think DD2 did better than any other DD game. Hot-swapping heroes during combat and an actual mini-map (DDA's mini-map is toggled and takes up a sizable part of the screen, deliberately obscuring most of the action even if it's partially transparent while DD2's was a smaller but ultimately more usable FPS-style mini-map)
Some beloved heroes didn't make the jump to DDA (no worries... the Dryad is now the Warden) but there's more in the pipeline. It's early and time will tell. The Warden's debut is encouraging the players to expect more DD2-style heroes
-----
I don't quite like the art-style as much as I like DD2's more 'realistic' style. All the games are cartoonish but DD1/DDA are more so. It also takes longer to 'learn' the map as the actual gaps in terrain are not as apparent as in DD2 but you only need to do this once. There's also a few UI bugs like the game not distinguishing between ALT-X and X properly.
-----
DD2's games are hosted on a server. DDA's player hosted. So you get the worst/best of both worlds in that you can play DDA OFFLINE but also means co-op/multi-player is more subject to player-player connection quality.
-----
Most of all, DDA is being developed by a bunch of folks who do seem to care a lot. There's already quite a bit of new content (tests / modes and more) that were never part of previous games. They gone from strength to strength and the game keeps getting better.

The suggestion Id give to the Devs is keep the new heroes coming, because they’ve got a good thing going with the art style, with just how polished the game feels. How simple it is to pick up and play. what was cool about the first one was the diversity in the characters you can chose from - different play styles ect.., personally i think if they added more characters and more content it’d live up to the first one. The original 4 characters in my opinion start to feel a little dry after the 3rd game release (I’m still glad they’re there, I think it’s just fun to have a little variety because with just 5 characters odds are you’re playing the same characters as your friends, which doesn’t make your skill set feel so unique if that makes any sense)
Also, please add more cosmetics! It’s fun making your character feel unique :)
But with that said, they are releasing a new episode update which looks like it’ll be cool (2 new heroes!) besides the odd bug here and there I still think it’s worth it, it’s a really pretty game and fun to play with friends

One day it died. I grieved for it. My life was over, our time was spent.
Someone then gave me a cat instead. I hated that cat, I threw it out.
Much later, someone gave me another dog, a rescue. I didn't gel with it at first. It felt wrong, it felt like it was trying to replace my old golden dog. He was rough looking, needed lots of help. I couldn't deal with it, I gave it to my aunt.
Months later, I returned to see this dog, it looked much healthier, much funner to play with. I realised I missed have a dog, and this dog was actually a gem, I just never gave it a chance when it was rough looking.
I now love this dog and we spend all our time together.

I miss more characters and dlc content that the original game had. Sadly the roadmap is looking like a joke so I wouldn't ever count on getting anything else.
The general balance of enemies, weapons and gear in the game is not that great. Enemies sometimes get stuck. And for some reason the game still doesn't have a shop? Wtf? Aside from that I don't have any complaints and expect to get good value for my money.

Let's start up with the most important thing: my recommendation varies depending on who you are. If you're the kind of gamer that likes playing through the game's story once and then move on to the next game, then you'll probably like this game in its current state. The first campaign playthrough is really enjoyable and, for the most part, well designed and well balanced. Boss might be a bit hard though, but I'm sure the devs will rebalance them. Either way, it's not so terrible.
If you're a Dungeon Defenders fan and plan on playing for hundreds or even thousands of hours, then I would ask you what kind of player you are. Do you require a finished products so you can play nonstop for many weeks? Or are you fine with a game that still feels like early access and will get many updates to add more content? If you want to play a finished product, I would say play DD1. If you don't mind playing for a couple of weeks, then waiting for the next update to jump back into the game, then I would say go for DDA.
The game is REALLY good, it's just lacking some content. This game recaptures the DD1 atmosphere and feeling while adding some nice Quality of Life stuff, like the hero deck from DD2 (all heroes in your deck gain XP, and you can swap in and out heroes in and out of your deck). There is no doubt in my mind that with time and many updates this game will become as good as DD1. The game currently is basically DD1 at the beginning before the Eternia Shard maps came out, but with more content and lots of quality of life stuff (hero deck, free hero points reset, etc.). So if you're a DD1 fan, I 100% recommend DDA.
Like I said above, even though the game is listed as released, it technically is a lot like an early access game and should be viewed as such if you decide to buy the game. There are some bugs, content is limited in the endgame, balancing needs some rework, new maps need to be added (there are only 15 maps currently), new heroes need to be added (there are only 5 heroes currently), etc.
Some people seem to think that this is just a DD1 remake, which is not true. It is highly inspired by DD1 though, and understandably. Out of the 15 maps in the game, 9 of them are DD1 maps, 1 of them is a map from CDT in DD1, and 5 of them are completely new maps to the franchise. However, there are some differences, and some major ones at that. Let's start with the smaller changes:
1) we now have a hero deck with 4 slots. All heroes in your deck will gain XP at the same time. Don't worry, it's not like DD2 early days when we were limited by the deck, you can swap in and out heroes from your deck during build phases.
2) There are no more negative stats on gear like in DD1.
3) Hero abilities were changed a bit. The huntress now has a hero boost that increases her fire rate, the monk's tower boost is a bit different, etc.
4) You can reset your hero points and respend them for free now.
Now here are the current major changes/new stuff:
1) We have a new game mode called Rift Mode: enemies are stronger and have new skills. Like rifted ogres can throw kobolds at you, rifted djinns can buff enemies and make them immune to crowd control, etc.
2) Clearing a map on rift mode will reward you with a fusion gear. Fusion is the new element in the game, and no enemy can resist it. Fusion damage also deals double damage to rift enemies.
3) A fusion set of gears will evolve one of your hero's defense into a fusion form. For instance, a fusion ensnare aura now is fusion element (so not poison, so it's can't be resisted), and also enemies inside it will receive 10% more damage.
4) We have a new difficulty called massacre, and there's a new mob in that difficulty called the siren. Sirens can cast an aura around them and give enemies inside it a permanent resistance (fire, lightning, poison, or physical, but never fusion).
5) There are now bosses at the end of a survival run on boss maps. Those bosses will drop a random pet from that act. So the Demon Lord in survival can drop the Deeper Well pet (Griffin), the Ancient Mines pet (rock pet), the Lava Mines pet (Steam Robot), the Alch Labs pet (Cat), or the Magus Quarter pet (Paddle pet). This make a lot of earlier pets a lot more relevant.
So to conclude my review, this is a pretty good game if you like action tower defense games, especially if you like DD1. Add to that a lot of new content coming in the future, and DDA has the potential of being as good as the current DD1 and even more.

I liked DD2 much more because you could change chars while starting the map. Im not very impressed with this game. The limited amount of useful towers compared to DD2 when you upgrade towers in DDA they don't change the looks at all they are the same skin fully upgraded.. I feel they put less time into this game then they did in DD2.

The nail in the coffin after all of the above, which I could live with, was twofold. First, the cloud/local save feature doesn't always clearly state which save has more progress. Or just straight up doesn't save when you want it to. For me, this meant I lost four level 20 characters and plenty of (albeit bad) items along with them. Second, and the true last straw, since yesterday all multiplayer attempts result in the guest dealing with unplayable lag, jittering across screens worse than the goblin assassins do.
I don't know how often they update this game, as features seem to change from day to day. But the issue comes when I can't tell what's a feature and what's a bug, whether it helps or hurts. I'm hoping that I can change my review and recommendation in the future, but from the community discussions I've seen, this isn't likely. There's no way this game is worth full price, and I'm frustrated with the sale price I paid for it.

Some fun hours with friends? When you're stupid enough like us to spend 100 Bucks in total towards an unfinished games with endless bugs, nearly no budget and a lot a decision flaws. For example it has toxic design towards the normal tower defense game.
In general it's the first DD in better graphics but without the fun and the game and the enjoyment.
I definitely DEFINITELY DO NOT recommend anyone to buy this.

1. Bugs. The game is plain buggy, the auto loot filter option is more of a detramant than a help, and more often deleted my high loot rarity items when I'm trying to make it loot everything. Today, I lost an entire set of fully upgraded legendary gear, and multiple mythical items in the stash, because the game had some old cloud save for no F***ing reason, prompted me to choose, and didn't give me any indication of which to choose since the timestamps on both made no sense. my level 72 apprentice was reset back to level 57. I lost multiple very high rarity items and many hours will be needed to recouperate this.
2. content: there's just not enough content to justify the price. as of right now the game includes:
base campaign (with about 1/3 of the maps changed, in my opinion the new maps are better but that's just me)
about 1/2 of the challenges from DD1
pure strategy/survival of the campaign maps.
rift mode
4 base characters+series EV
not much to go on really for the $30 price tag
the game's visuals are a very nice improvement from DD1 and there are many QOL features that are an amazing help. these range from pathway lasers from doors, better range indicators, and a clearer stat point GUI/weapon upgrade GUI, to the better layed out gear tier system, and better leveling rate.
overall, with more content updates, and bugfixing (seriously guys, the loot filter just eats loot it's awful) it will be worth the price and probably more, but in it's current state I would recomment waiting

As a fan of the Dungeon Defenders series with about 600 hours spread across DD1, DD:E, and DD2 prior, I am leaning towards recommending this game in it's current state, but with a caveat: this game is not polished and will feel janky at times.
TL;DR: I would suggest waiting a year or two before purchasing this game after a few more updates are release to polish a lot of the core features.
Pros:
• This will satisfy a need for Tower Defense X Action Games (although, you will probably spend a lot of time just tower building and perfecting layouts)
• The new engine feels like a great choice for this game: looks cleaner and plays smoothly.
• Upgrading system has been simplified from DD2 and DD1 in a way, which gives players ease to control their points.
• Infinite-ish storage was a welcomed change.
• Gameplay has not lost the soul of the previous three games and is a true DD addition to the series.
• Easier to level characters compared to previous iterations.
• Stages are a mix of familiar and new that gives old players a chance to try a few new setups.
Cons:
• Missing that Dungeon Defenders visual polish everyone is used to seeing.
• The U.I. needs a rework in general. It feels roughly done and not polished as compared to when DD2 was released
• Storage needs a rework as well. Would benefit from a stats section and a lot of polish (which is odd since they had those in previous games on release). At this time, it requires too much effort to look at values.
• Loots Power Level seems to revolve more around potential upgrades than actual stats at the lower levels (hopefully that changes). As from what I have initially seen, I had items at Power Level 40 and 50 that were still worse than my Level 1 starting weapon.
• Gameplay feels a tad bit slower, like it's running at 0.8x speed compared to previous iterations.
• Switching characters to look at available loot and level up points during a match is noticeably tedious. Should find a way to streamline menu options for quicker swaps and point allocations.
• Although they should be added back in future updates, a lot of QoL functionality from previous games feel like DD:A regressed back to their early early states.
• I definitely do miss the special abilities of towers that DD2 had which is painfully missing from DD:A.
Hopeful Changes:
• Did the Dummy get buffed? Pls tell me it did.
At this time, I want to recommend this game, but to also warn new players that this is not a polished Dungeon Defenders experience and I would highly recommend going to try DD1 or DD2 first.
However for all old players who want to play the third reboot in the series or for new players who want to go through the original torment of DD1/2 update cycles, it's not bad in its current state, but I would suggest picking this game up in a year or two to avoid aggravation with this game.

Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is worse in every possible way. Releasing it in this state was outright insulting to fans of the series and makes absolutely no sense.
It's buggy as all hell, I can't navigate menus properly with a controller at all, it somehow looks better and worse than the original game at the same time and my character has all skill points unallocated seemingly at random at least 3 times per map.
I got this game for free and it doesn't feel like a gift, it feels like someone dropped a flaming bag of shit on my porch.

There is no excuse for how poorly Chromatic Games has handled the release of DD:A and the poor ongoing support. Players who purchased DD:A on PC are still beta testing an unfinished product.
Chromatic Games,
If you are reading this, please step up your support efforts and fix these bugs before releasing any new content. As of 10/4/2020, it's been over a month since a hotfix has been deployed, and while you have acknowledged other major bugs, you have done nothing to give players a timeline or confidence that you care about having a quality or finished product.
Thank you

The mechanics are dated at best, and empty and souless at the very core, the main UI/interface is practically 50% unfinished and if you haven't played DD1 then you won't have any idea what half of the buttons or stats even do. There's no way to find out ingame.
This isn't a finished game, this isn't a very good game, it would have been mechanically fine back when DD1 was launched but standards are simply higher now. it's just pretty graphics, nostalgia and that quiet kind of sadness.

Perfect defensive layout ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ let's give that one more try
OMG it's morning ✔
Dungeon Defenders Awakened is a bright colourful cartoony riot of a game. Set up your defences and watch wave after wave of hapless fantasy attackers fall victim to your towers and traps. Gather loot in ever increasing power to bolster your characters and defences. Play aggressively by using your character to actively increase damage or play defensively behind a multilayered wall of deadly (and often amusing) destruction. Or even do both!
Easy to sink hours into whether solo or with friends, this version of Dungeon Defenders is the newest and easiest to get into. And when I say easy, I mean much of the awkwardness of the previous games has been ironed out with a great many quality of life improvements. There are escalating levels of challenge and a good range of difficulty settings to suit everyone from the beginner to the battle hardened veteran.
If you're new to the game this is the version to get. It will ease you in with its quick to learn gameplay and before long you'll be creating colourful carnage upon creatures collaborating to crush your crystal.
If you're a veteran of the previous games, this is an improved & updated continuation of the original game that skips over the divisive changes of DD2. It may not have the amount of content of previous versions YET as they had years of DLC and this is still very new but with ongoing support, the most recent patch adding back the Series EV character, should mean this will become the definitive version.

Unfortunately looking at what we have now it'll remain a hard pass even in a few years, it doesn't look like we're getting back the magic of DD1 and are stuck with this soulless husk.
My main complaints being (no specific order)
- Core gameplay loop isn't ready or fun, gear/leveling desperately needs work. Overhauls have come and gone yet missed the mark.
- The core loop is very important and you can only tweak it so much when you're as invested as they are by now - this is the key thing that makes me think this game is going to fall flat in the end.
- Feels like they're being overly cautious to prevent power levels from reaching what they did in DD1, unfortunately this is what made late game super fun
- Performance is worse than the original once late waves gear up
- Clunky interface, probably optimised for controllers but the lack of usability on KB/M does stand out
On the plus side there is no DLC... yet!
Moving away from being impartial (as much as possible anyways!) to my personal opinions!
- Characters have an uncanny valley look to them and I'd flag them all for needing some tweaks (minor but it does stick out),
- Character design feels like a downgrade across the board
- New EV doesn't look great, her look was just as iconic as the original squad (I'm ok with change or redesigns but kiiiiinda dislike the new one all around)
Will I update this? Probably eventually since I do want the game to be good and will keep an eye for when Steam has announcements on it.
I'm not one for posting reviews normally but when you actively feel ripped off it somewhat motivates you to do so.
But hey! I'm still not as salty as with DD2... yet...

2. Charge full price for any fool who will buy the game at such a price until they think this process has peaked...
3. then lower price a bit to next group of fools who will fall for that price point, and then lower it further.
4. Rob us via DLC and balance.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is either ignorant of their actions with DDA and past entries or in actual denial.

I have spent close to 150 bucks on the original buying it for friends and family, and would do again, even payed the non-sale price of 50 bucks once.
Buy it for the future to support it, but buy the original to get a good experience for now. Sorry Devs. Wish it wasn't so.

I have over 900 hours on the First game of the series (this one is the 4th), and DD:A is pretty close to the original. I love the controls, it's better than the first, however, there are two majors problem.
#1 - Lack of Content
There is 15 maps, 6 difficulties and 5 modes to play. Sure, you can play for a while before reaching the end of it. However, compared to the first game, it's as if it's 30% completed. 4/12 characters availiable, 15+ maps missing, not to mention the community ones but these may stay on DD1, it's not necessary required to have them on DD:A. It's really a downgrade.
#2 - The last difficulty. This is straight broken content... How to put it. I'm level 100 on all characters, already. I have level 83+ gear on all characters, and I can't even kill an Ogre (mini-boss) within 20 seconds. You die instantly no matter what, even with fully upgraded gear on defense. Tower Defense? Forget that, it's more like try to abuse the game with cheap tactics and hope it will work. As far as I know, you can only do Massacre with a single strategy and it's far from a simple one. How is that even remotely fun? The lack of characters also doesn't help in this problem. I'm just disapointed.
Until new content is released, I have to not recommand the game. Dungeon Defenders got more content, for cheaper. Why would I ask you to pay more for less? (The full content game on Steam usually gets 50-75% sale quite often, to be honest.)
I am very disapointed... because I love this game.

like the oldschool times glitterhelm cave is a pretty good experience map but we cant get through wave 1 because the last 6 enemies just dont spawn.
but it doesnt happen just on this map we tried to restart it multiple times.
he even killed himself on hardcore to look around the whole map to see if there are enemies but even that you get to do only for a few seconds because then the game locks your camera for some buggy reason.
idk i just cant recommend a game that you cant even play.
plus now that i am writting a review i find it sad that the towers dont get to look better after each upgrade anymore. i really enjoyed that feature in the first one. i dont see a reason not to add it the designs already exist in the first one there is not much work included besides copying it.
why are the two guys in your tavern just blant npc's that dont do anything? i was looking forward to unlock them for me to forge my armor or buy pets like back then.
alot of explainations are missing of how enemies work or spells, even towers like the ensnare aura show for some reason damage? they dont even show you how much they slow and that counts for every aura that isnt meant to deal damage - heal aura doesnt show how much it heals (it doesnt even scale good), strength drain doesnt show it effictiveness, etc.
there is alot of little details missing that made the first one so special.
i could go on for a while i really wish it was better...

https://gamedaily.biz/article/669/trendy-entertainment-rebrands-as-chromatic-games-to-leave-troubled-history-behind
The reason I bring this all up, if you have read this far, is that I don't want to see a company that I believe is trying to do right by its players fail because of grievances carrying over from another game.
If you don't like this game, I get it, it is not for everyone because it is a grinder. But at least review the game for the game.
My review, I love it.
TLDR; Trendy isnt the same Trendy that made DD2 so please stop holding that against this company. Article to support. Just review the game for the game. I love it.

I played DD1 for hundreds of hours. I couldn't get into DD2 because it just seemed like such a strange new version of their game.
However, when I read they were remaking DD1 and beginning from their roots again as a brand new company, self-owned, I was on board. I bought it during the kickstarter.
However... I'm severely let down.
This game is bare bones. This game has no content. This game has the old four heroes, the old four abilities, the exact same towers, minus the weapon/pet shop. They spent their entire development time on what, exactly? A slight graphics overhaul with 80% of the same old levels, plus four new ones to take the bad ones' places? And just FYI, the graphics are worse on some stages than the first game. ie. Castle Gardens.
So, what does that leave left?
Pretty much nothing. It lacks heroes, it lacks content, it lacks the shop, it lacks pets, it lacks customization, it lacks just about everything. Hell, they couldn't even be bothered to make the opposite gender heroes available from the get-go, despite them just being a different model and one different ability.
I love Dungeon Defenders, but this game just isn't that. If you want to get into it, buy Dungeon Defenders 1. It has content to keep you going for months.
This? You'll play this for maybe a week or two and stop. Pretty big let-down.

People do not recommend DDA because of how the devs handled the release and the virtual data wipe.
Almost all negative reviews do not apply to newcomers.
What you get:
- The DD1 main campaign (15 maps including the bonus maps)
- Campaign, survival, challenges, hardcore and mixed mode.
- 6 difficulties: easy, medium, hard, insane, nightmare and massacre
- Massacre comes with a new enemy never seen before in Dungeon Defenders
- All of that in a package that corresponds to modern tastes and expectations
- You get to pay much less than what people paid in early access
Why EA buyers complain so much:
- Their data got virtually wiped
- The price dropped
- There are some bugs left and there still could be a bit more polish
- Not 100% of the announced content is there yet (e.g. Massacre survival is disabled)
- All of the above while the devs said it wouldn't happen
My take on that: Wipe was because the economy would be wacky with already half of the playerbase at very high levels. Price dropped because almost nobody was ready to pay $40 back then. Game was released early (without all the content and with a few bugs) because it's much easier to push released over early access games onto consoles, especially with Nintendo (which will be the first console to get DDA).
Basically, get a much more user friendly (gameplay is more crisp) and good looking DD1, albeit with less content for the moment, for much less than most paid already.
Don't take care of those EA buyers' reviews, it won't affect your experience in any way.
TL:DR - Get DDA if you want to play DDA, just don't get brainwashed by reviews that won't affect your experience.

Development team doesn't communicate with playerbase even though its a pre-alpha. Terrible.
The game itself is...fine, i suppose. even though there's no bosses and insane is the hardest skill and there's only 12 maps. Its a pre-alpha, whatever, that's fine.
I also dont even care about the update being delayed. it happens. We have COVID to worry about and sometimes bugs come up in testing, whatever, I don't give a fuck, I can wait 2 more days to play a game.
But this is the 4th Dungeon Defenders game made by this company. And they have ALWAYS been bad at communication. There is no longer any excuse for stuff like this. You're telling me that this company didn't know the march update was going to be delayed until 4PM on the last day of the month? No, I don't think so.
Honestly just buy Dungeon Defenders: Eternity, or Dungeon Defenders 1. Don't buy Dungeon Defenders 2 though that shit is awful.
>But this game isn't made by trendy, its made my Chromatic
Literally the same company just a rebranding.
>But COVID so you should have expected a delay because all the devs are working from home.
What so you can't log into the forumns from home?
>But DD:ternity is garbage, look at it's rating in the steam store
Eternity had a shit release, it didn't even run, and so got review-bombed. (hmm a bad start? seems to be a common theme with this game series..) They fixed it up real good though and its, in my opinion, the best DD game to date.

One of my favourite game with over 1800h played between the different versions. It's a coop 3D tower defense where you slay countless waves of monsters, tweak your build, get better gear and have fun with a friendly community.

in this it just feels like a mess of different levels stringed together with no real theme other than act 1 which almost works in my opinion, where as In the first game it was like I was climbing up from the dark work areas of the castle with Act1, to the living quarters where people would go about there days in Act2, leading to Act3 where day turns to night as we move higher and higher till you reach the summit during a storm, the wind howling on the ramparts as we make our last stand to protect the lands of Etheria from the old ones army.
As for the GUI it lacks any personality at all, where the original had metal borders with diamond shaped rivets, a wood and parchment backing, animated bars for health and enemy's left making this just feels like any other game these days, the blandness of the GUI comes in spades with the inventory and level select screen.
Two smaller things that bug me are the ring menu no longer allowing me to change the keybindings of towers quickly and the pinging no longer sounds different between characters although these I could forgive if other parts of the game had charm at all.
All in all I think this is looking more like another DD2 for me instead of a remade version of the original akin to the crash trilogy which is why I'm hopping I'll be proven wrong down the line.

Its style over substance.
Edit: In response to the Dev. They have been responsive to many bugs. However, there are many basic features that need to be improved on, specifically the UI and the Inventory management.
The UI is often buggy and disappears from the screen.
The Inventory part of the game is a slog to navigate. If you wanted to sell 100 out of 150 items. You will need to sell them all 1 by.
Class balance at the moment seems a bit Iffy and all the characters have had 1 ability removed from the game. IE Huntress' Stealth was removed.
All Classes have a BOOST ability which do not work at the moment.
The Huntress' ability makes her floatybut nothing else changes.
Apprentice is supposed to boost towers but I see no changes in the stats or DPS
Removing abilities and adding a BOOST ability (which i find very lazy) seems unintuitive if we're following the Story of DD. DD1 -> DD2 -> DDA. They were supposed to have gone back into, keeping all their knowledge and experience yet we have less skills then in the original DD1. Customizability of the classes, Including being able to change their colors like in the original, should've been planned for which will improve the overall quality of the game.
Squire - He is the best class for early game. His best tower is the shield tower with harpoons being 2nd best.
The rest are close to useless as 1 Bowling Tower mechanics change which makes the balls bounce instead of roll.
The Game Physics turn this tower from a potentially balanced tower into a RNG fest.
The balls WILL bounce over units such as goblins and miss completely. The AOE is non-existent on it.
Solution could be to have kept the penetration power but lower the damage according to how many units passed.
Spinning Tower is at the moment has too low HP to use with mediocre DPS with a very buggy range.
Shield Tower and Bouncing Tower have the same issues where a goblin can stand right next to the tower and hit it without getting hit.
Apprentice is the best class overall. But again, only 2 towers are useful. Fireball Tower and Striker.
The rest will need to have better scaling and be buffed to be used at all.
Monk seems the most balanced but could use a little QoL buff to make upkeep on the auras a bit easier.
Often I will not be able to see the aura's base in all the action.
DPS Huntress seem to be a waste of investment as Hybrid Builds work much better overall with the Cat pet being in the game.
The maps are very enjoyable but with inconsistent invisible walls everywhere it ruins the immersion.
One thing would be to improve the monotonous end game would be to allow players to start on specific waves IF they have cleared the map already. I do not want to be forced to farm a map for 2hrs just to get a common pet with extremely low stats.
The addition of weekly modifiers to maps or even randomized maps would extend the end game.

I will say right now there are certainly bugs. (02/25/2020) Some are gamebreaking, and a lot are just bugs that are there to be annoying but I can live with for now.
Do I feel it's worth the 40$ price tag? I'm not exactly sure how I feel about the price point. I know personally that I will get the money out of what I bought it for. (25 back on Kickstarter) And even if I hadn't I do feel like I would get the moneys worth out of the game. However, there is a lot of wait and see right now, too. The next patch/milestone when Nightmare is introduced should have more bug fixes and other things that will definitely change things massively I am assuming.
Graphically, I adore the game. Some of the characters look a ltitle goofy? But I'm not going to be too critical of it since I don't pay too much attention to it.
Gameplay wise, it's fun. It is a huge hit of nostalgia from DD1 days. It is a little shallow right now with limited maps and no way to start at certain waves for survival, so it's a bit grindy to say the least for farming pets and such.
In ending - the game is worth it, to me. If you like tower defense and like to farm for perfect gear and try crazy builds, you'll get your money's worth out of it.

The game is a reskin of the original dungeon defenders with better graphics better environment effects and some slight tweaks to gameplay.... as advertised so that really shouldn't be considered negative as it is openly acknowledged and it is a successful return that brings back all of what made the original great in my opinion and eliminates a lot of the bad that was holding dungeon defenders 2 from being equally as fun.
There is not a lot of content, it has the main campaign (minus bosses) and survival mode for leveling and gear grinding and that is about it...also as advertised, again there is a timetable release from the developers that shows planned release times on more content, also those reviewing negative about that seem to forget that the original dungeon defenders had very little content in its 15 dollar original release( it had the campaign with some bosses and survival mode) the extra content they are remembering was all free add ons later like insane mode(which is already in this one) and nightmare mode(coming soon) or paid 10-15 dollar mini dlc's generally in the form of new classes.
If you take early access for what it is and understand more value is coming your way over time and like tower defense games and don't mind a little grinding for gear and levels then this is absolutely a fantastic game and buy =)

Anyone expecting the game to have everything or match the scope of the original right now should read the kickstarter road map before buying.
