Über das Spiel

Evil is afoot in Menhir Forest. The druids, the caretakers of the woods, are troubled: their archdruid has disappeared under deeply suspicious circumstances, and a cancerous growth of purple cysts is spreading, carrying corruption and sickness wherever they appear. It takes a special kind of hero to save the day. Or maybe more than one.

Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest is a labor of love from the co-creators of the critically acclaimed Legend of Grimrock series. Druidstone is a tactical, single-player, turn-based roleplaying game, which combines the best qualities of modern RPGs with the elegance of tactical boardgames. Every action, every turn counts as you control your party of heroes through handcrafted, challenging missions with varying, and often surprising, objectives.

Set in a unique fantasy world, Druidstone is filled with ancient lush forests, standing stones, snow-topped mountains, deadly creatures and puzzle-ridden ruins. And somewhere in the middle of all of this, caught in the flow of events, are Aava, the archdruid's daughter, who must now shoulder his responsibilities, Leonhard, a warden with a mysterious past and a lethal destiny, and Oiko, the failed Red Priest who is living proof that one may be very smart without being particularly wise. Along the way, they meet companions and villains, whose unique personalities and abilities make every encounter memorable.

Features:
 • A tactical turn-based and tile-based battle system where every action and every turn counts.
 • Upgrade the abilities of your heroes – your upgrade choices have a dramatic impact on the characters' capabilities!
 • Obtain upgrade gems by completing missions and discovering hidden treasures.
 • 35 challenging, hand-crafted missions with playtimes ranging from 15 minutes to 45 minutes.
 • Solve devious non-combat puzzle levels to gain extra upgrade resources.
 • Find lost shipments to gain access to the best gear in Steelface's Emporium of Curios.
 • A gripping, fantastic story of love, death and responsibility centered around the main characters of Aava, Leonhard and Oiko.
 • A unique fantasy setting that combines the best elements from western RPGs, JRPGs and tactical boardgames in unexpected ways.
 • Play custom missions created by others, or make your own campaigns with the Druidstone Level Editor (available as a post-release update).
 • Total playtime ranging from 15 to 20 hours.

Druidstone: The Secret of the Manhir Forest ist ein tiefgängiges SRPG (Strategie-RPG) mit Rundenkampfsystem.

Gameplay

Wundervolles rundenbasiertes Taktik Spiel.

Just like the Legend of Grimrock, it looks nice, sounds nice but is ridiculously punishing/f****ing hard even on easy!

Lovely, challenging, and satisfying is how I would describe Druidstone. The combat mechanics are Deterministic, that means that if a sword says it does 3 damage per attack, it only does 3 damage each and every time. This makes the combat very interesting and much for like a puzzle to figure out than pure RNG does. The world is a beautiful storybook type, colorful and vivid, and the characters are quite neat with just a pinch of cuteness here and there. Character customization is not too bad, you can really develop a unique playstyle with your party members and how you develop them.

One thing about this game, the stuff you can do in combat really is otherworldly at times. Very interesting and intricate and SURPRISING moves can be pulled off, sometimes that you didn't even intend on doing! It's very cool. Really a high quality strategy RPG here, deserves much more recognition than it currently has imo.

Enjoy! :)

Fun little game dungeon crawler, good solid combat. Mission based gameplay and the ability to re-roll skills makes at the drop of a hat, makes it a little more like a puzzle game than others of the genre. I bought on sale and it was a steal for £5

Solid gfx, sound fx, music and gameplay. All around great game. I did not encounter any bugs or crashes.

Can get a little repetitive if you lose a lot of battles. There is a little bit of trial and error to be successful. If you are easily frustrated by having to restart a fight several times, this might not be the game for you. Once you get a hang of the mechanics, it isn't too hard to master the fights. Soon enough you will lvl up and get better gear, and your crew will be kicking ass.

'Druidstone' is a cleverly designed tactics game with elements of adventure RPG and some puzzle-solving. The story is quite similar to many other party-based adventure fantasy RPGs where a small group of heroes sets out to stop evil and save their world.

The game consists of numerous missions in different locations of the land. Each mission is a small part of the story. Some are related to the main objectives, while others are more like sidequests. Each time we make progress in the main story arc, some new side missions are unlocked, and we can choose when to do them. Each mission has both main and bonus objectives. Completing bonus objectives gives us extra rewards, either in a form of money or magic crystals. The latter are needed to improve some of the skills of our heroes and therefore are highly valuable.

Akin to typical RPGs, our heroes can gain experience points and level up, and as they level up, new skills are unlocked. At each level up, we can pick one of the given skills to add to our heroes' arsenal. Most of those skills have additional effects that can be unlocked by using the above-mentioned gems.

The missions themselves involve tactical grid-based combat. Although they are not all the same at all. Each mission has its own unique objective, which often adds some new strategy into the mix and encouraging us to adapt. In fact, in some missions it might not even be favourable to engage in skirmishes with the enemies at all and instead make haste and interact with all the objectives as soon as possible before enemy reinforcements will arrive, and yes, they do arrive in almost every mission after some number of turns.

Luckily, our characters possess not only combat abilities, but also utility and support abilities. The mage for example has a teleport ability that allows him to switch places with anyone, ally or enemy alike, within a certain range, which can be utilised in many ways, such as escaping enemies, getting closer to a key target, moving a vulnerable ally out of danger, changing lines of sight, bringing explosive barrels to where you want them or simply lining up the enemies in a way that makes strategy most efficient. Other useful utility abilities include a sprint function that gives extra movement in a turn, a shield that absorbs all damage from the next two attacks, a focus ability that improves the effects of some of the magical spells, and so on.

Generally, each of our heroes has several movement points and one action point each turn. Some abilities would use the action point, while others do not. At times we can pickup powerups that grant us more than one action point in a turn and can be essential aspects of strategy.

There is also a handful of purely puzzle-based missions in the game, all of which are optional.
After completing any mission, we can always replay it as many times as we want if we wish to have a go at accomplishing some bonus objectives we missed the first time. In fact, I often found this to be a viable strategy, as some missions can be pretty hard when you first do them, so prioritising the main objectives in those is the best bet, and only later to come back and do bonus objectives when you're stronger.

Overall, this has been an interesting tactics-based RPG. It's certainly challenging and will encourage you to always adapt your strategy to new goals and situations, so you won't be able to blitz through the game on one approach alone.

Lastly, the presentation on all fronts is also superb - beautiful and colourful visuals, decent music, crisp GUI. There can be a bit too much dialogue at times, but you can skip it by pressing Esc twice. This is especially useful when replaying missions. I think a function to let us speed up casting animations might be worth adding though just to streamline the flow of the battles a bit.

Another one of those three mission games it seems developers love with the assumption that all players are looking for a chess grand master tournament. No many of us simply wish to play an enjoyable and relaxing game without stress, the developers should learn from the Sid Meier civilisation series with up to ten difficulty levels so you play the game you want not the one the developers want.

Super challenging but in a fun way! I love games like this, where it feels impossible strategically at first. Love the story, the graphics, the battles, everything about it! Only downside is, you can't skip the story when replaying missions, that gets annoying since you will definitely have to do that (back out to change gear/gems). Hope they make more like this!

EDIT: Omigosh, you heard it from the source, ESC twice!! Don't be like me and machine gun click your mouse through the dialogue. Wish I had known that before!! LOL!

What a gem of a game. This has the feel of an old school game but with quite good graphics. Each mission is fairly short, but interesting to do. Each has a different challenge. All the information you need on any person or ability is a quick mouse hover away. This game is a real gem if you are looking for a turn based tactical game without a lot of overhead to just get in and play. I love the world map as well.

+ combat system
+ customization of abilities and equipment
+ difficulty
+ nice graphics

- uninteresting story and conversations
- relatively short

Druidstone was quite a surprise to me, a hidden gem that has been rolling in my backlog for a long time. It is a short generic story, when a group of heroes once again saves the world against the evil sorceress. However, this is not essential , as the game excels in turn-based combat, which is in the form of a missions. Each of the 3 and later 4 characters is unique and they have only one action available within the turn, which could be used for combat or other abilities, a few movement points and some free action. Actions and movement can alternate at will. As for abilities, attacks and their effects, there is no random chance, what makes the game a bit puzzle, since the missions are strictly taxed and what can change is their difficulty and setup characteristics of the heroes. Missions can also be replayed for a better result, because bonus money or gems that modify the properties or items of the heroes depend on the fulfillment of various side tasks within the mission, which is very demanding. Overall, the difficulty of the game is already quite high at the normal level, in most missions on the hero press time or too many spawned enemies and there is no room for any mistakes. The heroes have at their disposal unlimited mostly only basic attack and minor healing, better abilities are limited and they need to be saved for a suitable situation. There are treasures or magic books on the map, which can add a bonus item or add a magic or ability for use in a mission.
In addition to tactical maps, there is a map of the world where heroes can be equipped with better items or gain new abilities when leveling and select another target, but otherwise it has no other purpose.
Some missions are pure puzzles or riddles, but their difficulty is low and somehow they do not represent a more serious obstacle in the next step.
The missions are usually quite balanced, although difficult, until the final, when a bit of a coincidence comes into play at the boss's actions, with a bad constellation, it is impossible to defeat him.
I can only recommend the game to anyone who likes to challenge and turn-based fighting, the game is really good in this respect.

This is a gem of a game for people who enjoy puzzles X divinity original sin gameplay.

+Pretty graphics and animations
+Easy to learn, hard to master mechanics
+Every mission (puzzle) can be played on easy to hard mode, and also have bonus objectives that are quite challenging.

~Story is okay.

-Some enemy animations take a while (5-7sec), which is fine the first 50x you play that mission, but gets annoying when you are retrying a hard bonus objective.

Buying and playing it I found mediocre in strategy I played for as long as took for me figure out.
I think for strategy game they should NOT have tutorials.
ALLOW players to get the game on their own.
Like: characters and story(there is story)
Dislike: crappy weapons and not enough splash effect tools take down enemies or objects to use attack mobs, healing potions you can't make while before venturing in onto map quest, rewards aren't materials to help better your group.
Personal Opinion:
there are no side quests there should be but there only few at start, there should some enough to help character evolve before you take super hard quests. Quest like 3 or four you have be lvl 10 in order survive or have warm clothes and I don't know how that is possible. Seems they might broken some normal questing rules.

Druidstone is a turn based action game set in a fantasy world of magic and monsters. I don’t think the store page’s description of Druidstone as an RPG is accurate, as there are no towns to explore, NPCs to talk to (other than the cutscenes that happen during each mission), or side quests to perform like you’d find in most RPGs. Here you simply select a mission from the world map and play the mission. Gameplay is mostly focused on combat, and there are also a few puzzle missions which are fairly easy to solve.

During most missions you’ll fight against large groups of enemies such as mages, skeletons and giant insects. In addition to the main objective, each mission has a couple of optional objectives which will reward you with extra points to spend on upgrading character skills, or gold to buy new weapons and armour from a shop.

Combat

For most of the early missions you’ll have three characters in your party, a warrior, a ranger/healer, and a mage. Around halfway through the game a rogue will join your party, and after this you can take all four characters into missions.

Combat is turn based and each mission takes place on a small map which is divided into a square grid. Each character has one action point per turn to either attack an enemy or use an ability/item, and they can move a few squares before and after taking their action.

Combat is extremely punishing, with some missions taking me several attempts to beat, even on normal difficulty. There are several reasons for this. Probably the most important is the fact that every mission has infinitely respawning enemies, a gameplay mechanic that is guaranteed to frustrate me in every game where I encounter it. Your party will often be outnumbered by enemies who each take multiple hits to kill, and by the time you’ve cleared them, another wave will have spawned.

The key to survival is making best use of abilities which can hit multiple enemies together. This includes special melee attacks like cleave and whirlwind, firing two arrows at different enemies, or AOE spells like fire, frost and lightning. However, these special moves have limited uses per mission, so by the time you’ve killed a couple of waves you’ll be down to basic attacks and the next waves will be even harder. I often felt like my failures were not because I was bad at the game, but because my characters just got worn down over time.

Meanwhile, performing a mission objective (such as rescue NPC, destroy hostile object, open crate, pull lever, disarm bomb) costs an action point, which means your character can’t attack on the same turn. So you either make no progress towards completing the mission, or slowly get overwhelmed by enemy numbers. Also, some missions have a strict time limit to complete the objectives otherwise you’ll either lose instantly, or start taking more damage from environmental effects like frost on a snow map.

On some missions I had to ignore the enemies and optional objectives so that I could just rush to the exit. Maybe that’s how you’re supposed to play, but it doesn’t feel fun. Plus that tactic results in missing out on a few of the skill upgrade points, making the party weaker in later missions. You can replay missions that have already been completed, but this kind of grinding is another gameplay mechanic that I don’t enjoy.

Most of the new weapons that you can buy from the shop are trash until towards the end of the game. Most weapons give you an extra single use ability like power attack, or add a status effect like knockback. Its extremely rare to find a weapon that actually does more base damage so that you can kill enemies in less hits.

After two hours of attempting to defeat the final boss on normal, I had to drop the difficulty down to easy.
When you get the boss down to half health it teleports your party onto the other side of the map and prepares to heal itself. Its the kind of move that bosses in other games can only do once, but here the boss will do this every time its health goes below half. So you have to kill it before it can heal, unfortunately now you’re on the other side of the map, its almost impossible to move every character close enough to deal damage in one turn, especially melee characters. On easy the boss has significantly less health so a couple of ranged attacks will get the job done.
Story

The story is fine, but it doesn’t really explain who anyone is, or any of the world’s lore, at the start of the game, which made it hard for me to find a reason to care. Its possible that the frustration of combat put me in a bad mood, but I didn’t find the player characters interesting either.

The warrior is your generic character with amnesia, the rogue doesn’t speak the same language as the other party members and is therefore unable to participate in conversations, although this makes her less annoying than the mage, whose dialogue is full of so many bad jokes that I just wanted him to stop talking.

Recommendation

Druidstone isn’t a terrible game, its just really annoying. If Steam’s review system allowed a middle/neutral option I would have selected that, but it definitely didn’t deserve a thumbs up. I could only possibly recommend it on the deepest sale.

TL;DR

This is a strange game. Essentially, you are dealing with a puzzle adventure disguised as a punishing turn-based strategy. It is either entertaining or frustrating, depending on how you will comply with its puzzle nature.

Full Review

When I discovered that the authors of the Legend of Grimrock series are working on a 'turn-based RPG', I knew I would have to play it. Unfortunately, I cannot say that Druidstone is as good as Legend of Grimrock 2 is. The story is generic and uninspired, dialogues are shallow and dull when they are supposed to be humorous, art style and music are pretty much unremarkable. And yet, the game somehow manages to satisfy my love for turn-based games, mainly because of its puzzle nature and hardcore difficulty at the beginning. It reminds me of campaign missions in Heroes of Might and Magic III but with more strategy involved (which is something I really enjoy.) The more you progress, the easier it gets, especially if you consider replaying previous missions with your stronger heroes. By choosing upgrades and buying items wisely, you can make your squad so powerful it could devastate any opposing force. Enemies are not the main problem, though. Every mission has its own twist, and if you do not know what exactly it might be, you better keep your best moves to yourself as long as possible. This game draws a lot from Grimrock in this regard – you have to solve it in order to beat it; there are even a handful of trials without combat, all of them optional, although they are easy to solve. I guess not everyone will be satisfied with this kind of gameplay and the lack of possibility to save and retry mid-mission. In case things go south (and believe me, it will happen more than once), you will have to restart the whole ordeal again. The good news is that your heroes cannot die, they just pass out, and you do not have to kill every enemy on the map; completing objectives is enough. Anyhow, I have no real complaints about gameplay at all, but I do have them about everything else.

You play with the same set of heroes the entire game because it is story-related; you cannot choose their initial personality in any way. In the beginning, there are three playable heroes: the warden, the druidess, and the mage. The warden is your warrior; he fights close range and draws enemies to himself. The druidess is your archer and healer; she has many support abilities. The mage is, well, the mage – a powerful creature who deals extensive damage to multiple targets with focused spells and makes around 80% of your tactical maneuvers. The mage’s ability to swap places with other objects on the field, friends or foes alike, is probably the most valued in this game. There will be more playable heroes to complete the squad later in the game, but the starting trio will remain your main battle force till the end due to gained experience.

Storywise, Druidstone feels overdramatic while trying to look clever and funny. I did not like it at all. Chucklefish did a much better job in their recent turn-based tactics game, Wargroove, combining the same mix of world-ending drama with lighthearted humor. Yeah, you do not have to deliver a strong story in this genre, I suppose, but still, it feels underwhelming to play a game just for its tactical combat. There was virtually nothing else for me to enjoy here.

In conclusion, I think Druidstone is a mediocre game that really shines in the most vital part – gameplay. It was enough for me to give it a thumbs-up. Maybe it will be enough for you too if puzzles and turn-based games are something you appreciate.

Really fun TBS comparable to Invisible Inc rather than Divinity 2 or Nu-Coms, since its main strength, at least for me, lies in a small amount of RNG. Your every attack and action have a predetermined result, the same goes for the attacks and actions of your enemies. Most of the time you can concentrate on polishing you strategy, developing clever tactics, not wasting any time on waiting for the God of random numbers to have a pity on you.

The enemies' AI has been clearly fine-tuned by the developers and doesn't easily forgive you mistakes, pressing you on all fronts and aiming at your weak spots. At times the game can be pretty difficult, but again, its deterministic nature doesn't lead to frustration, since (almost) every fuck-up is your personal fuck-up, is the result of your own mistake.

Unfortunately, there is a couple of caveats.

The first one is connected to RNG again. It's one of the rare instances of randomness in the game, and immediately I can't help but feel it makes the gameplay worse.
Every now and then a dying enemy can randomly drop a so-called shard. This shard, if you manage to pick it up, gives your hero an additional action. Actions are very valuable here, allowing you to initiate an attack or defensive/buffing maneuver, which can strongly influence the outcome of the mission. Apart from some exceptions, each hero has only one action per turn.

Sounds innocuous, but it leads to the situations when after improving your tactic for dozens of minutes, failing repeatedly and getting closer to winning with every retry, you randomly get an advantageous action shard and suddenly beat the mission. But why did you win this time? Had your cunning scheming worked? Or were you just lucky to catch a 'pity-shard'? Who knows. With this happening the taste of victory was soured for me in many missions. Not picking a shard is a bad option either, for if you won't get it then your enemies will. And in tough moments it can lead to losing the whole mission by the will of the RNG.
I am convinced that either these shards should've been ditched, or the drop should've been predetermined by the devs with considerations towards missions' balance.

Second one is a pretty minor issue. It doesn't lead to frustration and you can easily avoid it. Simply put, there are puzzles in this game and they are embarrassing. They are so easy I accidentally solved one of them first try without even understanding what its goal was. And it was a late game puzzle, no less! Again, it's not a big deal but if you want to call your puzzles 'devious' (as the developers do on the Steam page) you really need to put more effort into them, otherwise just don't bother and ditch them altogether. As they are now they feel as a playtime stretchers.

Other than that it's all nitpicks basically. The art-style is good looking, though quite generic. The story could be charming, but some of the writing lacks a finesse. Oh, and the final boss is too reliant on RNG again, but it's manageable if a little bit annoying. Overall it's great turn-based tactics game for those who got tired of TBS relying on chance too much. I also really like how they practically give you a respec at the start of every mission, so if you're a person like me who hates to sit over boring stats not knowing what the game is gonna throw at you, it's gonna be a particularly pleasant aspect of the game.
Highly recommend it. Also do consider beating all the additional objectives, it's a fun challenge.

One of the best games I have recently played.

Even so, as it seems, game has still received some bad reviews, which in my opinion are quite subjective to the point of expectations from the game.
The game is puzzle rpg with some missions which are time limited. But game is trying to be exactly that. Those time limitations fall nicely into the story and missions and puzzles are fun and not too mind boggling. On all other missions you can stall to finish them to get maximum side objectives and gold from enemies, which comes very handy later in shop. And game is designed that way, since with every additional turn more powerful enemies spawn.

Druidstone isn't the most complex rpg game out there, for sure, but it is enough challenging to the point where every move counts and is story rich and witty with very diverse missions which don't get repetitive.

All in all, I've enjoyed playing Druidstone immensely.

Looks pretty, but so very tedious and linear. The writing has plenty of humor and the story is mildly entertaining. Replayability is pretty much nil. So disappointing. I really wanted to love this game.

I found myself frequently stuck in progression. Missions feel far more punishing than they should be. Often you find you have to replay missions a few times. And since missions you have already passed give greatly reduced rewards it feels like you are beating your head against a brick wall. To progress the story, level up, and get loot you have to pass the most recent mission.

I am a die-hard gamer. I play XCom 1 & 2 on legendary difficulty. This feels far more punishing due to lack of options and just being swarmed. That seems to be the biggest issue. Clear out a set of baddies and next turn a bunch show up to replace them, all while racing against the clock.

It occurs to me that if skills simply had a cooldown instead of being limited in number of uses per combat the game might be more enjoyable. Lack of meaningful gearing options was also frustrating.

I love XCom, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc... and this game is none of those.

The game has a lot of charm in its characters and story, as well as the general storybook aesthetics and music. Sadly, it is really more of a puzzle game than a tactical RPG and that's not really what I'm looking for. Another reviewer pointed out that almost every mission feels like you're under a time constraint with constantly spawning enemies. Those are bad mechanics for tactical RPGs.

This game is absolutely awesome and scratches my every itch. Flawless user interface, beautiful permanent progression and character customization, perfect turn based combat. Heck, even the story is good – and I usually skip the story altogether in games. I expected it to be good but my expectations were clearly surpassed.

PROS:
Good Graphics
No game breaking Bugs
Somewhat fun combat

CONS:
Not what I expected
More a puzzle game than an rpg
Weird choice for optional objectives (like take no damage in the very first fight)
Requires replaying the same battle over and over and over again...dozens of times potentially
Gets boring real quick

Did you like the hard fights in Divinity original sin 2?
Then you need to play this game.

The focus is more on gameplay and the battles are not too easy.
You ll enjoy it if you like turn based rpgs with skills
You have predefined characters but you can give them gear that gives them sepial abilities and choose between skills they get when they level up.
Additionally you can add extra features to skills with the gems you get from the missons (depends on how many side objectives you can clear)

Sometimes its not possible to clear specific goals on your first try but you can always come back and do those after you get stronger.

Finished the game and i can clearly say that this game is a real gem for tbs rpg lovers.
Just trust me and buy it.

Game itself is little above the average.

Having just played Fire Emblem: Three Houses I was wary about picking up another tactics game, but Druidstone does it in such a fresh way that I can hardly put it down. It's not the kind of game where you're expected to min-max, have a specific build, or grind a lot, which are often things that turn me off when I do play a tactics game. Add in some fun characters and some engaging missions and this is an easy one to recommend. Another good one by the Grimrock devs.

It's not *bad*, really... but it isn't so good, either.

The game is much more linear than you might expect from something like this. Yes, you get to pick the order that you do your quests in, but only between one or two options and you have to complete all of the story missions in the same order whether or not you choose to skip some of the side stuff. You can repeat past quests as many times as you like to try and get more stars, like this is Angry Birds or something... that's an odd choice, really.

Your characters are pre-selected, you don't get to customize or build them in any way. Their progression is minimal and feels very railroaded. The inventory system is about as basic as it gets, and the loot system is dumb. Enemies drop powerups during combat, which I find absurd in any post-NES era game.

Most of the missions are short and simple, the combat is really easy, and everything is designed to make you feel like you need to hurry all the time. Arbitrary turn limits abound and all of your skills run out, so you feel like youre under pressure to complete everything as fast as you can. Also, enemies tend to spawn endlessly, and the level ends the second you finish your primary objectives, so rushing past enemies to run towards objectives is common.

Like I said, though... it isn't bad, perse. The asthetics are nice, the plot is alright, and the characters are likeable enough. The mechanics all work, even though I don't like all of them, and there's enough variety in the level design to keep you interested for a few hours. I'll probably pop back in and finish it, eventually, but... I wouldn't recommend it to anyone at full price. If you can catch it for under 10 bucks, it might kill an afternoon for you.

Shall you are looking for a good turn based strategy-RPG with fantasy setting, then please keep looking, because that's not the one. It's an alright game, fantasy for sure, but more of the childish type. I don't have issues with fairy tale fantasy (Kings Bounty: The Legend kind of nailed that one), but that's more of the imbecile one. Little furry gizmos acting as e-mail relays with subject fields and such. That gives a good description about what to expect.

On the surface, the game is TBS-RPG alright, but it's rather a grindy puzzle game. Let me elaborate; you perform missions chained together with in-game cutscenes. You have primary objective and secondary objective(s). First one completes the scenario, second (third, etc) one gives you upgrade gem and/or gold. And that's it. It's not about cunning strategy, it's about how to puzzle the pieces together and even with 1HP, sorrounded by enemies, but light fire beacons, because that definitely disperses all the enemies and suddenly you are victorious.

For most of the scenarios you may not be able to complete all side objectives, but you can return later to try it again. Which you must, since side objectives give you upgrade gems, which allow to develop your skills and those are a must, oh boy. So the way it looks like that you barely get through a mission first time, then go for other missions, but when you leveled up, you can grind again the aforementioned missions to maximize their yield. Does it sound bad? Well, for me it does.

To add injury to the insult, loot drop is totally random, you may get stuff like freezing the enemy movement for a turn from a random chest as well as remove debuff item. No balance, nothing whatsoever.

Anyhow, the game is not bad per se, just make sure to align your expectations. For me, it definitely didn't match.

Druidstone is challenging on medium difficulty. I like how you can replay missions without penalty to get things you may have missed. You can also replay the missions at different difficulties. The missions are varied and there are so many options to equip your characters to play those missions. If you want a turn-based strategy game that you can play repeatedly to perfect each mission, you will enjoy this game!

Something is wrong with the combat system.

Turn based combat game is suppose to be relax, take your time to make your moves. But the missions are, quick, do this, go there in a amount of turns. So this is not relaxing. And the reinforcements system (to force you to complete the missions faster), seriously?

This game doesn't do a ton to pull you in immediately. The story doesn't slap you in the face with awesome. The gameplay doesn't reveal the hidden twists and turns it has planned for you. The music is great the whole way through, but the presentation won't have you on the edge of your seat. It's a slow burn, but a fantastic one, well worth the price and the time.

So - as for what to expect from this strategy game, it's elegant simplicity. Stats are very small and limited, very easy to understand. Enemies have pretty predictable AI in terms of who they will target and how they will move. There are (almost) no RNG-based effects anywhere in the game. Special abilities, status effects, unique powers, enemy types, hazards, win/lose conditions - everything is super tight, easy to grasp and intertwines well. Very little feels unnecessary or unimpactful.

I really appreciate the challenge level of this game. Right from the start, it feels tough, yet fair. Every decision is important, and every victory feels earned. Even as you maximize every opportunity the game gives you in smart ways, you can still feel like you're scraping by early on. You're given ever increasingly smart and useful abilities, but this progression doesn't feel entirely vertical. You're empowered with new options, but few are ever truly 'better' - just uniquely good in certain areas. You're pushed ever harder to make tough choices and it feels incredibly rewarding when you set things up to go just the right way.

I do wish there was more game to play, for how much I enjoyed what's there. But 19 hours to clear (almost) 100% on Normal was absolutely worth it. I expect this game to be something I'll come back to some day for Hard mode. God help me when I do~

This game is great, a hidden unknown gem that deserves more exposure and sales. While the writing is too hokey and light-hearted for me, everything else about this game is excellent. The XCOM-style turn-based combat is very interesting and a ton of fun, and I've been dying for a good fantasy game with that kind of combat. Even better, it lacks XCOM's infamous RNG; if you attack, you always hit and always deal a set amount of damage. The challenge is in maneuvering and ability combos. It's really well done, and there's a lot of tactical depth to every single encounter. Nothing in the game feels repetitive. Ignore all the other reviews that say this game is too hard or that encounters only have one single solution, they are wrong. I beat the game on hard difficulty on my first playthrough, and it was easier than XCOM on classic difficulty, and there were clearly multiple ways (using different tactics or builds) to beat every encounter. This is a really well-made, balanced, fun turn-based combat game and I wish there were more like it. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes that kind of gameplay.

A fun and interesting tactical RPG by the makers of Legend of Grimrock. This is the type of game where you have to think a bit to complete all of the side-objectives on the first try, and it has a few token puzzles sprinkled in, none of which are unfair. Progression happens through abilities (attack/support/utility/passive) chosen from a pack on leveling, as well as gear, and enhancement of gear and abilities with gems earned by completing missions and option objectives. Definitely recommend!

A Strategy RPG with a real emphasis on strategy. Battles are the majority of the gameplay here, and play out more like puzzles. You have your small party with limited resources at their disposal, and you have to complete map objectives while usually trying to beat a ticking clock in the form of being swarmed by enemy reinforcements. You get a decent bit of character customization in what ability load out you bring, and a few choices for equipment that has different effects. You do not grow appreciably over the game - at the start of the game you might be dealing 3 damage per hit, and by the end of the game you can do 4 and 5. The real meat of the customization is in the gem system - you slowly accrue gems by completing missions and optional objectives in those missions, and you can slot the gems into your equipment and skills to give them extremely important bonus effects. +1 damage or range on your spell might be the difference between one shotting and two shotting an enemy, allowing another party member just the distance they need to run up and flip a switch to end the mission. Best part is you can reallocate your gem loadout whenever you want, so you can retool your approach on the fly.

The game is very difficult too, but not overwhelmingly so. At least on Normal difficulty. If you like a challenging SRPG, this game is worth the play.

In the general family of XCOM in terms of gameplay, but more about skill combos than terrain, cover, and lines of sight.

There are a couple of puzzles that I disliked and thought weren't intuitive (the one with the necromancer, and the one with the paintings), but I just shrugged and googled those; it doesn't really take away from the main appeal of the game which is the combat.

I don't understand why game developers can't represent their game correctly. This is a puzzle game with some RPG elements. When I think about tactical games, I'm thinking about the combat in a game like Divinity: Original Sin 2 where you have a situation and lot of possible ways of solving it using your characters' abilities. In this game, the action points are so restricted and the demands of the scenarios are so demanding that the player spends all of their time working out the exact combination of abilities to get through the mission. That's not a tactical rpg, that's a puzzle game.

But, if you're looking for a game that really is about finding the exact correct solution, then this is a pretty good execution of it.

I actually got REALLY hooked on this game once I was able to get a few missions in. The first couple are SUPER difficult on hard mode and not really meant to be played that way until you level up and want to go back and redo them. Once I got past this, the game was awesome. One thing I want to address is how some people are saying it’s a simple system. I totally disagree. The way you spend your crystals (which rewards for beating maps and completing harder bonus objectives that allow you to upgrade/buff a skill) and the fact that you can move them around between each map makes for a ton of strategy and customization, so although it's simple to understand it's not simple to make the best choices.

Each mission is carefully crafted and unique. There is a ton of strategy. One poor positioning move can ruin the mission for you. Luckily one of the main characters has a move that can rewind the turn once per battle and you can save mid-battle. Also worth mentioning, there is no missing or crits and you know exactly how much damage you and your enemies will do with your attacks. The graphics are nice and the enemies are very detailed. The story starts a bit slow but really picks up and has some good twists.

This is just a really solid all around tactical game. If you are looking for one that actually makes you think and has a lot of strategic elements this is your game.

What an amazing game! Engaging turn-based combat. Very tactical! Meaningful choices for character builds. High graphic and animation quality. Excellent soundtrack! An very interesting story, particularly the Warden's. The themes range from cutesy anime to horror, all executed well. 10/10

Complaints:
- The game should be longer :)
- The final battle is very, very hard unless your characters invest in a lot of protection abilities. There is also a random element that can spoil the tactical decision making.

If you enjoy a turn based tactical strategy game in a fantasy setting, get this game immediately. It's one of the best strategy games I've played in years. The major triumph of this game is the unique ways it balances the challenge. I often find myself destroying strategy games, especially as the characters advance and different skills are unlocked. With this game, they are always throwing you a curve ball that keeps the fights fresh. Usually it's trying to complete the bonus objectives, which unlocks additional gear or gems that you can use to buff your different skills. Customizing your skills with gems is another amazing element of this game. You can change up the gems in between each battle, making drastic changes to your team. The graphics are a tad bit dated, but that didn't take even the slightest bit of enjoyment away from this game. (Think top down isometric graphics like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale). The story of this game isn't anything fantastic, but the dialog is freaking funny, making me laugh several times. The characters have a really fun quirkiness/randomness that I really enjoy in a game. There are also some really cool puzzle levels. This game does not hold your hand, in the difficulty of the combat or in the puzzle levels. (The puzzles are set up such that they drop you in without much instruction, and you have to problem solve to figure them out, which I really liked, but that may not be your cup of tea). The puzzle levels are optional though, and not necessary to beat the game. When I first started the game I wasn't sure, but if you play just a few levels and see how all the mechanics work, and you enjoy a challenging turn based strategy game, I promise you will be very satisfied with this game.

Druidstone is objectively a good game, but it's also incredibly stressful to the point where it's hard to really enjoy it.

Every level is an endless onslaught of enemies or turn limit until impending doom. Even after finishing the game and trying to replay levels (with leveled up characters) I still have to try my hardest because for every enemy I kill in a turn, another 2-4 spawn in, and no amount of grinding really makes your characters do more damage.

Every fight is boss fight, and every encounter is 'oh thank god it's over', it's just a little bit too much.

Druidstone almost feels like a puzzle game to me. Combat is deterministic, levels are handcrafted and there is very little any kind of randomness. Completing missions feels like finding solutions to puzzles. Unlike in most actual puzzle games though, you have a lot of creative freedom in how to approach the levels. I like puzzly games but it's good to know what you are in for.

The game doesn't waste your time with grinding or lazy content. The experience system is unusual compared to most RPGs. Your stats don't really get better as you level up, rather you gain more abilities in your arsenal. Buying gear also emphasizes choices rather than simple power progression. Generally there are no strictly better weapons or armor. They just have different abilities and effects.

I liked Druidstone quite a bit. It's a thinky game.

Warning: those looking for a (tactical) turn-based RPG might not get what they want! This game is more akin to a puzzle game, on hard, at least.

There is little room for error when trying to get the bonus objectives. This means you'll have to find the most efficient way and, how the game is setup, there really is only one way. An important reason for this is that the skills and equipment are not balanced at all. You are forced to pick certain skills because the rest are too weak. Same with the equipment, most is junk, except for a few pieces. You are left with one good solution and a lot of bad ones.

Another thing of note is how there is almost no RNG. There is no crit damage and enemies always behave the same. This also attributes to battles feeling more like puzzles. Though, there is an RNG factor in the random loot drops, most noteworthy action gems, which give you free actions.

Lastly, it's too easy to accidentally miss-click, resulting in a quick death. The undo-move feature doesn't properly work. There is an actual skill to reset the turn, but it's limited to one use.

Yes, I did complete the game on hard, with all achievements, no less. It was an okay game, but I'm still going to give it a thumbs down as a warning for others. Make of it what you will.

This is a great turn-based grid game.

Some complain about the difficulty, but to be fair, it is a game where (almost) every decision matters. One square up or down can make a big difference in battle, the same as one point of damage or armor. It requires to be attentive to details and focus on mission's objectives, as mindless moving and smashing is bound to fail most of the times. If you can grasp the game mechanics and overall strategy, you're not bound to fail and repeat tons of missions (I failed about 4 times in normal difficulty, completing main and side objectives on one go most of the time).

Characters' skills are flexible and meaningful, giving you plenty of options and styles.
Graphics and story are cute, although not amazing (and not the main feature of the game, so it's pretty okay for me).

Normal playthrough took about 20 hours, and I believe playing on hard would be too much for me.
Not planning on playing again soon, but had a great experience.

I enjoyed how quick it was to jump into and start having fun. It's not over complicated with ton of gear to manage/upgrade (timesyncs). I was looking for a simple turn based tactics game that I could jump into and not spend as much time managing my characters as playing them in combat and this delivered on that. However.. the negatives outweigh those positives for me.
I dislike that it encourages you to race thru maps with timers in place making it difficult the longer it takes. I don't like that new enemies spawn into maps magically as turns progress. You're very much encouraged/rewarded for maximizing every move and punished if you don't calculate each square movement toward end target(s). Oftentimes the map experience your shown on turn 1 isn't even half the enemies the map will have and certainly not the difficulty of the map if you don't rush to complete the main objective.
I really dislike tactics games that have timers or timer based rewards, and tactics games that you can't tactic until you've played once as it doesn't show you what/where unknown enemies will magically spawn.

Damn good game - lots of tactical options and pretty graphics.

The special abilities can be complex and take a while to learn how to use effectively, therefore this game needs time.

If you like reloading over and over and over again. Rinse and repeat. This is the game for you. If you select normal it is impossible to finish many of the maps first time through. Do easy first then level up and return and play it in normal. The game is fun. The rinse and repeat over and over and over again is really annoying. Even picking different gear for the level with most of the inventory purchases it is very difficult. Having to restart after spending 30+ minutes on most of the missions is annoying. Bottom line, the game is way OP mission wise. I can't imagine what hard would be like if you are fully leveled. LOL

What a wonderful little game, the music is gorgeous, the story is fun and engaging. The combat and item system is complex. It's what i've been looking for in a tactics game for a while TBH. My only complaint is that I wish I had more characters to play with who had different skills.

I don't generally like games that have strong puzzle elements but I have to say that I'm really enjoying this one. Whilst having to do things in a certain precise way can make the game feel somewhat linear the combination of turn based tactics done well and puzzle elements works surprisingly well and you are never left completely without wiggle room regarding choice of mission. Some may find the more difficult quests irritating due to the way you can be heavily punished if you don't achieve your mission objectives quickly enough but this game is ALL about thinking of better approaches to complete your objectives before this becomes a serious issue and, since you lose nothing from failure and are able to make repeated attempts at each mission, it's more a case of a need for perseverance than any kind of deal breaker.

The story premise and dialogue is neither bad nor stellar and does an adequate job of pushing you through the narrative.

As mentioned I'm not a person who likes games with a need for puzzling so, for me, Druidstone possibly wouldn't have been something I would have gone for at its full price but this week it's 75% off and, in my opinion, it's WELL worth £5 of anyone's money whether they feel it would be their kind of game or not.

100% except for achievements. Fun game, on Normal the difficulty felt just fine, not very hard at all, completed most levels on my 1st try and had fun!

Mostly funny and silly, the story didn't really hold up to the more serious bits well, but all in all a fun small game. 4/5 for me

I would say Druidstone is 70% turn-based tactics and 30% puzzle. Definitively plays different than X-Coms, Warhammer 40k Mechanicus, Breach and Clear, etc. The progression of the story is acompanied with heroes gaining new abilities and equipment - strategic chocies have to be made, so I don't find the part between levels as shallow as some reviews claim. Many levels have unique objectives, so there is little room for repetition-induced boredom. Also, the game is polished and the story is quite interesting. I didn't enjoy Druidstone as much as Grimrocks, but it it still a strong 8 out of 10.

Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest was....pretty good. Definitely not on par with all the praise heaped on it, but a solid game in its own right regardless. I know more than a few people will go in with expectations of it being familiar for Grimrock fans, or of it being similar to XCOM. I would say both would be a mistake. While developed by the same people who made the Grimrock series, and despite having some similarities with XCOM, it is most decidedly unlike either. I'd advise going in with an open mind and a general appreciation for turn based tactical battles.

Story

Honestly, the story wasn't all that engaging for me. You gather a party to combat the evils that have befallen the Menhir Forest and who have been killing the local druids. Basically.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1945631300

On one hand, the writers very definitely enjoy some Monty Python in their lives, and I thought the humor added to the writing and character interactions was fun, if a bit more on the juvenile side of things more often than not. However, oftentimes, the humor is used in an awkward way, more akin to those awkward laugh moments, where it isn't really a funny situation, and so you make light of it to sort of make it more tolerable. I thought that was actually a more powerful use of brevity than normally happens in games.

Beyond that though, the writing was okay, but nothing that really had me wanting more. If anything, I really looked forward more to the character interactions than the actual story. However, the story DID resolve effectively within the context of the plot, and so that was nice.

Gameplay

This is probably where most of the XCOM comparisons come into play, but I would say those comparison pretty much start and stop with Druidstone being a tactical turn based combat oriented game. Does it have all the standards of an XCOM style game? Yes. However, it really does offer plenty to be its own experience, or at least for it to be a reasonably unique fantasy specific experience anyway.

Each scenario, be it actual combat or puzzles, will typically conclude quickly. I think the longest missions only really lasted around 20-30 minutes. This is actually a positive as, while you can definitely binge play (I did lol), it's also a solid pick up and play title once you have the gameplay mechanics down. There are a lot of missions, and the map variety was definitely there.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1948544726

The overland map is set up as a topographical map with points of interest, and each of these is a mission of some sort, whether side mission or something that advances the main story. I feel that doing all the available missions was pretty important as it allowed me to level up my party enough and gather enough cool stuff to really have a chance later in the game. This game has a pretty high degree of difficulty, so giving yourself the best chance to succeed possible is pretty important. RNG does factor in, but I found that aspect to be completely fair.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1945631354

Once you select a mission, you are dropped onto a map with different obstacles, objectives, and a decent variety of enemies. This is fairly standard for the genre. However, your actual abilities and such really set this one apart from games like XCOM, and cover definitely doesn't factor in AS prominently due to the smaller map sizes here.

Graphics

The graphics in Druidstone were always lush and never failed to impress. Yes, as an isometric type game, some of the finer details will be lost on some people, but really, this game is a stunner. The use of color and lighting to really bring the world alive was pretty evocative, and the avatar detail was nice.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1948544907

The animations were especially well done also, and there is no lack for cool looking effects in the game. It's also worth noting that the overland map is a stunner, and the UI in Druidstone was easy to navigate.

Audio

I thought the OST in Druidstone, in particular, was worthy of note. Often whimsical, always on point. It's a nicely composed soundtrack. The actual in game sounds were also nicely done. All in all, I never felt compelled to mute the game, and in fact, I sometimes found myself sort of zoning out to the music lol.

Verdict

Druidstone was, in my opinion, very much worth playing. I don't think there is an especially high amount of replay value outside of trying different levels of difficulty, but the base experience was one worth having. I thought the game was both the perfect length and just the right level of difficulty, with cool bosses and a fun enough story. Recommended on sale, but I would also advise tempering your expectations if you are an XCOM or Grimrock fan.

Like with many other games, it's kind of hard to rate Druidstone. There's some good in it, there's some bad in it, so, all in all, it's an OK game. One of those that you may play, or ignore without missing much. You desperately need another turn-based game? You may as well check this one out. You already have enough? You may skip it. Like I've said, it's an OK game. Unfortunately, there's a couple of things that make the scales to lose their balance in a favor of “thumb down” button.

First of all, Druidstone isn't really a proper game. It's just a bunch of tiny little tactical battles. With nothing in between. You know, when you play games like Realms of Arkania, or X-COM, tactical battles are... well, just battles. Just a part of the thing. With tons of the other stuff happening in between. In Druidstone case? It's just that. There's nothing else. Just a series of tactical battles. Something like that may work for some cute little games like Weaves of Fate, which cost less than five bucks, but for $24.99 product? It's a joke. Sorry, but it is.

And it's not like tactical battles here are especially deep and complicated. Nothing like that. The maps are laughably small, the amount of skills and other stuff is very limited, leveling system is extremely dull, the bestiary includes only a few basic enemies, there's almost no bosses, etc, etc, etc. And weird balance makes all that to feel even more unpleasant. Because in this game, you either learn exactly what to do by trial and error, or, well, you die. Fast. Let's just say that it's not the funniest experience out there.

Same thing with the story. Sometimes it tries to be serious, while sometimes it just gives you tons of cheap and awful humor. I mean, seriously? A Final Fantasy parody? A character who starts to speak Japanese all of the sudden? Seriously? Sure, all that gives you a weird aftertaste too. Because it's hard to understand how should you take this game. For a parody? It isn't fun at all. And for a serious game, there are too much failed attempts to be funny.

Finally, the game is bugged as I don't know what. For example, in my case, after a certain mission, the game just broke and started to crash after any action. Don't ask me how I've fixed it, the problem just disappeared after a few hours of me trying to load the old save file. It crashed for 99999+ times and then boom! the problem disappeared and the same exact save file loaded just fine. For something as basic as Druidstone? It's a disaster.

So... Yeah. Even though this game is far from being unplayable, I totally can't recommend it to anyone. It's way too basic for its price, it gives you a weird aftertaste and it's pretty buggy. Even with 50% off, this game is a very arguable purchase.

Druidstone plays like a tactical boardgame with RPG elements. The thing is, there’s a sense of urgency, both because turns can be limited and because objectives are easy to fail. That brings in a ‘puzzle’ element in the game, where every move, attack and use of skill, has to be aligned perfectly. As the hours pass by, gameplay goes on to favor more the puzzle element than the combat and RPG mechanics. What starts as an engaging, vibrant fairy tale based on turn-based combat, eventually turns into almost chess-like gameplay where you have to consider even the smallest detail, many rounds beforehand. That means that even one wrong hex will force you to start the level again. After enjoying the game for 8 hours, this wore me down eventually. I wish Druidstone was a bit more forgiving because it’s a carefully designed game with colorful maps, a charming personality and dreamy music score. https://www.facebook.com/chriskuv/

If you're looking for a game to relax - this one is NOT for you.

Major cons:

1) The difficulty. It's absurdly difficult from the very start, and gets progressively worse with each mission. And the endgame battle is.. well, it breaks all the anti-records.
2) The majority of missions have annoying mechanics that always keep you stressed and push you to finish main objective faster:
 • ridiculous amount of enemy spawns. You're always heavily outnumbered.
 • swarms of immortal units that resurrect (or get resurrected by others) after death.
 • You have X turns till you get frozen/exploded/gangbanged, etc... And the amount of turns you get is always too low, which leads to dozens of restarts.

3) Savegame system is crap. It's not possible to create a save to a separate slot and then continue from that point. Because of that I had to make physical backups of the savegame folder in order to continue from where I wanted to continue, and not from the beginning!
4) Long silly dialogues. Some of them are so artificially bloated and stretched, the characters literally talk about random crap. Things that could be put into ~8 dialogue bubbles had been stretched to 20+.

Minor cons:

1) No indication for enemies turn order.
2) Archer is basically a support class instead of a ranged damage dealer. With only 3 offensive abilities, and the rest ~15 being support and utility ones - don't expect damage from archer.
3) Bows are underpowered. All bows deal 2 dmg per shot, while the weakest enemies have 3 hp... Archer can't solo anything. Its purpose is to run around, open chests and babysit the serious guys.
4) There aren't enough power gems to upgrade even half of the important cards for each character.

I played on 'Normal' and it felt like it was 'Purgatory+'.
I really wanted to enjoy it, but couldn't because it kept me stressed all the time.
A combination of poorly implemented mechanics and mistweaked difficulty completely ruined the experience for me.

8.5/10

+ skill system is perfectly minimalistic - neither cluttered nor too simple
+ combat is indeed tactical and surprisingly deep; on some levels you can't do a single mindless turn without Consequences
+ beautiful graphics
- low items selling price assumes some grinding
- no option to skip ability animations or speed up enemy turns

Overall, this game deserves much more exposure and I'll instabuy anything similar from the developer.
