Unlikable characters, cringey dialogue, boring repetitive combat, and graphics from the 1800's. Even Dragon Quest IX on the DS looked better than this. Nothing in this game was enjoyable, the most fun I had was finally beating and uninstalling it.
If you value your sanity, stay as far away as possible.

It was very repetitive at some points, and Instead of trying to do some other missions or repeating them, I was only hoping to quickly get through it. I wasn't really... enjoying myself when playing the game. The fighting was O-K but not much else.
I have played both this one and DQH2, and this one I didn't seem to be able to bring myself to thoroughly enjoy or even get into new game+, so...
Apologies, but it's a no from me.

The camera has an annoyingly narrow viewing angle, and there's absolutely no way to change it. It took me quite a while to get mostly used to it, and ultimately it never entirely stopped being a minor annoyance. The narrow viewing angle might have been okay in the original console version of this game, (for whatever reason it is that narrow viewing angles seem more common and acceptable on consoles to begin with,) but it definitely really needed viewing angle options in this PC version. It wasn't a deal breaker for me, obviously, but if you're the type that really hates cramped console cameras, that could be an issue.
On the upside though, the game really nails the stylized Dragon Quest art direction. It's far too rare to find games that both have an actual production budget AND go for stylized visuals anymore, so if you're a weirdo like me who likes modern graphic muscle but misses the colorful cartoony art direction of old games, this game is a rare treat that I thoroughly recommend. Even more so if you played the old Dragon Quest games and enjoyed those.

Oozes charm and combat is a big fun blast already. I read the downvotes and really I don't recognise the game from their description (yet?).
Great character voicing and great music, in my happy place already.
The combat is big and flamboyant, skittling hordes of zombies with a whirlwind is pretty fun and well animated.
Will update as I play more
Having played more, I think I'm not a fan of this style of (mousa?) game so much, but I'm not changing my recommendation as it seems a fun distraction. Not sure I will finish, as I don't see the game being much different going forward.
So that's my final verdict, fun and cheery, shallow as a puddle. Bit like me!

tl;dr
Odd pairing of Musou aka Warriors and light tower defense formulae, Dragon Quest Heroes is certainly something worth checking out yet it is a kind of amalgam that always plays “in the middle” rather than committing to ether strain of its DNA. Clearing out fields of endless enemies has been deepened with inclusion of characters development more akin to RPGs and approachable story about Light defeating Darkness is an evergreen. Limited character roster and frustrating late game tower defense sections can chafe if you were lead to expect more [or less] of either, but this is Dragon Quest fan service done right for aficionados of the franchise. Not being one in the first place shouldn't stop you from trying this one out given it is entirely self-contained, though.
Full Review
Taking place in a world apart from the rest of Dragon Quest games we have a unique situation where monsters and people are coexisting and even cooperating. Chief among these is the Kingdom of Arba where our two protagonists, Luceus and Aurora serve as captains of the guard under the watchful eye of their king. They also have a heal slime called Healix who indulges in goo puns all the time. Well, things go south when we see a mysterious mage who's up to no good and through a ritual causes monsters to turn on citizens. Realizing the same thing is happening across the entire world our intrepid heroes recruit the king's master inventor Isla, board the flying fortress dubbed Stonecloud and embark on fixing whatever went wrong. From little I've heard about the adapted franchise in question this evolving into “chosen ones of Light must save the world from the Darkness” seems like natural course of things.
Amusingly enough story is only ever truly strong in Warriors games when they're licensed spin-offs such as this. That's not the say this is going to win over many JRPG fans or some such. Good half of the game is spent visiting desert, forest and underground locales so you can solve their problems and recruit characters for your roster. I'll get more into the latter down the road, but story is your classical POWER OF FRIENDSHIP so no surprises there. If there's a structural issue it would be how predictably set up it is. Do couple of missions, story introduces new characters, rinse and repeat. More often than not we're also dealing with padding as story has you going through three or four missions where one would suffice.
When you put into context that only four out of thirteen characters (whoops, I meant twelve because one is totally a secret) are Dragon Quest Heroes' originals you're left with the remainder who happen to be fan service done right. Now, I wouldn't call them deep or anything, but this is probably due to being distilled forms of their original incarnations aka there isn't really any room for character development that would alter them tangibly. Good thing is characters like boisterous monk princess Alena or would-be-brides pair Bianca and Nera still succeed at delivering much needed variety in terms of personality and gameplay style. One element I wish I could change would be to make some characters more viable. Your mysterious swordsman Terry absolutely slays house with fast lightning-based attacks and self-healing when needed, for example.
Easiest way to point out how different Dragon Quest Heroes is from your usual Warriors fare would be to explain what the latter is.
You pick a character from what is, at this point, a roster made up of odd hundred characters, choose a level from the list and then proceed to rack up hundreds and hundreds of KOs as you clear out enemy bases, fell enemy lieutenants with your blade, etc with relatively simple combat relying on button mashing more than any in-depth planning or peak manual dexterity. Keep at it with new characters and storylines for many, many hours. Thing with this game is you have a significantly smaller playable roster and you take a while to fully unlock it. Fortunately, this is offset by the fact each of them IS unique so we're not just dealing with re-skinned attack animations + there's the RPG power progression attached with points eagerly awaiting to be spent as you level up.
The unfortunate bit is inclusion of a brand new element – tower defense with monster minions acting as eponymous towers. As you fight monsters they may drop a medal. You promptly pocket the medal and can then summon the monster in that level until they either do their thing or their health bar gets depleted as they protect the surrounding area. Problem with this is general lack of control as enemy waves start pouring in including more high-tier monsters. You can only handle so much with the character you control, other three in your four-man party tow are doing their best as potential targets, but they're always rubber banding to you. This means monster protectors get left in charge of holding choke-points or, Goddess help you, actual objectives. I lost count how many times in end game I was at my wit's end dealing with an AI system I had no direct control over and silly prioritization it engaged in. Seeing “protect X” in story missions made me dread the worst, but those were generally fine. Side quests were the ones that drove me mad because they weren't as finely tuned and you were expected to reach a certain level before tackling them. Basically, monster minions are meant to detract and slow down incoming enemies as you go around to deal with Mawkeepers that spawn new forces. In practice this leads to frustration.
There was clearly tangible effort put into including more RPG elements in this one as well. Whereas level up usually just meant flat increments here it's a gateway to skill points for you to distribute. Is it perfect? I'd say no early on because it locks basic functionality behind a progression wall, and having freedom means you can prioritize wrongly, but once you clear that hurdle it's smooth sailing power curve. Only Luceus and Aurora are mirrors of each other seeing as you choose who the game protagonist is when you start playing. For the record I think I made a mistake because Aurora's ice based magic seems way more useful her counterpart's fire magic. This inversion is humorous with their personalities taken into account as Aurora is the feisty, spontaneous one. Not to mention everyone has four special skills on top of regular light/heavy attacks, former costing mana points to cast. Old staple of building up your attack meter, called Tension in this game, and unleashing a special, screen clearing attack is still in and will be your go-to solution.
I would argue Dragon Quest Heroes is a game stretched out far more than it should've been. There's maybe fifteen or so hours here, but as story milestones are reached you will need to spend some time doing sidequests [re-using existing maps for kill or collect missions generally] to keep up. Those weapons won't buy themselves nor will Orbs acting as armor for your full-fledged stat system. You can even craft accessories, but I found those of limited use for regular play. Maybe they matter more in end game or New Game+. I wouldn't know lacking the willpower to commit more that 30-ish hours I already put in.
All of that seems like a highly negative review yet it is more about my own annoyances with game's diversion from the Warriors formula I'm familiar with. Tower defense sections in late game almost brought it to naught for me, but denying evident production values would be akin to lying. Enix's supervision most likely had something to do with it, and stellar VA accompanying fitting soundtrack certainly adds to the package. It's all so... charming and straightforward. Larger than life drama has appeal of its own as it hits those traditional JRPG story notes in all their simplicity.

GET DRAGON QUEST XI INSTEAD
What I Liked:
- Musou-style Dragon Quest!
- Nostalgic BGMS
- Original characters + characters from the previous game series
- Fancy combat animations
- Cutscenes were great
- Monster coins
- Metal slime was still pretty cute
What I Didn't Like:
- Hollow musou mechanics, musuo games could be really fun with appropriate designs, but this game felt lacking and boring
- There were 13 characters in total, but they were poorly balanced
- Each character only had about 4 unique skills
- Most skills had limited range, and you would probably have done more damage by just spamming the attack key
- Team of 4 people at max, main character could not be changed
- No instruction could be assigned, teammates would just fight alongside with you
- Basically 3 different objectives repeating throughout the entire game: kill all mobs, kill boss, protect people/structure while killing mobs
- The game also attempted adding puzzles into some of the maps, but it didn't work out, turned into boring task instead
- Costume, this is the funny one. You will get a so-called alternative costume for each character upon completing certain quests. The alternative costume is just the same costume your character been wearing but in different color
I have a mixed feeling about this game, as I am a big fan of the DQ series. Extremely excited about this when it was first launched in 2015. Finally beat the game after it's been released for 5 years. Part of me enjoyed the game very much, and the other part of me just didn't like it. It's got so much potential yet it's not what I'd expected.
None of what I said was game breaking. After all this was a 2015 game that's targeted specifically towards DQ fans and/or Musou fans. If you are new to DQ and Musou, you should try something else, this is NOT for you.

As a dynasty warriors game it is definitely no stranger to grinding systems (more so for materials than levels). It also shares similar pitfalls to other warriors games with issues getting some materials compared to others, even when difficulty is not a factor. It really doesn't help that a lot of the music just irritates me: after a while I had to completely mute the game music as hearing that lobby theme every single time I cleared a level and returned was driving me insane. I know that the music is based on classic dragon quest tracks but I just don't see the appeal of overuse of these tracks in such a manner. I tried playing Dragon Quest 8 after this and wow is that game way better.
Another note, couldn't care less about the original characters, way too generic too be meaningful additions to the story, every cutscene they either sound like a broken record or just state the obvious.
In summary, if you wanna play a warriors game, this is the one I recommend you NOT play. If you want to get into dragon quest, this is also NOT the game for that. Just don't play this, I say this for your own good. Just pick something else, please.

The positives include: monster designs and locations, character design - everything looks stunning. The game sounds like Dragon Quest. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end and the negatives start... everything is extremely repetitive: music, gameplay, story... I love Koichi Sugiyama's music but I've heard these compositions a thousand times, I want to hear something new, and preferably not have it on repeat for 20-50 hours of this game.
Gameplay has the same issue as music - it's fun.. for the first 10-15 minutes. Then you're gradually getting more and more bored. What helps is that there's this mechanic of using monsters basically as additional special abilities. Seeing the beautifully designed and rendered monsters of Dragon Quest in vast numbers is pure joy. I would honestly forgive the game's faults only because of that, if it wasn't so limited. There's a handful types of missions, all of which you will repeat numerous times, and these missions are pretty annoying: escort character A (which move so slow you'd think they want you to fail), defend point B while fighting off little monsters that spawn other monsters... On top of that, the game constantly takes away control and makes you stand somewhere and listen to dialogue telling you what you already know. Monsters posses little to no threats unless they're in high numbers or with high HP values. The entire game is just a collection of terrible gamedesign ideas that feel like early PS2 games.
The story is okay. The pre-rendered cutscenes are very nice and the overall story is enjoyable. The dialogue falls flat, though. Voice-acting is surprisingly passable in English version and surprisingly... bad with Japanese voices. It's really strange because Japanese games tend to have better original voices than dubs but this time around I would recommend playing with English.
Dragon Quest Heroes is a game that collects the worst gamedesign ideas of PS2-PS3 eras (keep in mind that the game is a PS4 title). Accompanied by highly repetitive and barely satisfying gameplay, the music you've heard a thousand times while playing other Dragon Quest games, poor voice-acting... this is just a terrible experience. I don't recommend DQ Heroes to anyone, including Dragon Quest fans.
Also regarding the second game... I've played it, as well (on PS4). It's a little better in some ways but mostly about the same.
I'll probably end up keeping this and Heroes II just because seeing the monsters run around in large numbers, in 3D is really nice. Plus there's a chance Heroes 3 will actually be good, seeing how Musou games are becoming better.

PROS:
+ The fighting mechanics are impeccable (which is one of the things that keeps me going)
+ Killing mobs is satisfying.
+ The skills are fun.
+ Nice combos
+ Easy to understand skill system
+ Beautiful graphic and character design.
CONS:
- Repetitive after 10 hours: clear the stage, watch a cut-scene, go back to your town/ship after every mission, over and over.
- Very poor story
- Crafting system is limited
- Not an open-world game
- MIDI soundtrack… so annoying…
IN SUMMARY
I tried to like this game, but I’m still undecided on whether I should continue or drop it. I think this game is really meant to be played when you really have nothing else to do and are bored. Also, play it in small sessions (maximum 1 hour).
Don’t get me wrong, the game is very well made and would have a lot of potential if it wasn’t for the over-repetitiveness..
In the end, don’t buy this game at full price. I got it at 15$ so at least it’s not that bad..
Sorry, even if this game has a lot of pros, I can't recommend a game where myself I'm questioning If I should keep going or not..

Pros: -Gameplay is fun to play
-Simple skilltree
Cons: -Changed options change back again everytime on boot-up
-Game crashed on boot up
-Only shows x-Box controlls
-Might crash at end of a cutscene
Overall, if the bugs wouldn't occur, I'd play it more.
Not worth for the 20 bucks (wintersale) nor the 40 bucks full-price.

Gameplay :
This game features a rather classic Musou gameplay (that is to say, a type of game in which you mop the floor of ennemies thanks to endless combos) mixed in with some RPG elements. For example, you earn money, experience points and even materials which allow you to respectively buy equipement, level up and craft equipement. I like grinding in most RPGs, so you'd think I'd love that idea. However, it's in the execution that DHQ falters. Ennemy drops (materials and exp) are ridiculously low meaning a lot of time doing the same combos to kill the same ennemies. And when it comes to the ennemies, there are about 15 original monsters and then just boring color swaps. So, while being very interesting at first, it quickly becomes very very repetitive. The only idea I really liked is that you do missions with an entire party, meaning more abilities available at short notice.
Presentation
For the story, it's so mundane it only serves as a backdrop for the game. Chosen heroes go to save the world from the bad guys bla bla bla. When it comes to graohics, I really like the DQ character and monster designs, always being as pleasant to eye. However (and I know it's a recurrent issue in this series) the MIDI soundtrack is abominable. It's just so funny when the games tries to sell you an emotional moment with those grating MIDI trumpets in the background.
So yeah, not so great. Buy it if you really really really like Musous. And if you do, I wouldn't recommend it for 40 bucks. 20 bucks would be a better price. Otherwise, don't even bother.
