This steam version is buggy as hell though and got tons of issues ranging from random crashes every once and a while to characters models getting F*****d up to the point where these issues kinda ruin the whole experience.

Simply download any and all DLC you want.
How to install them:
Some of them are self installing .EXE files, but most are .DAZIP files and to install them you need to download them and then run the 'DAUPDATER.EXE' file found in your Dragon Age origins Steam directory. DAUPDATER will install them and had no problem getting them to work in the Steam version.
Also, while I'm here, a friendly tip: when you get to Denerim and most likely start experiencing crashes when loading your save game or just playing. Do not try loading your latest save straight away as it will generally crash right away. Solution: first load a save game that is outside Denerim (always keep at least one save game like that) and after that you can load your latest save game from Denerim.

IMPORTANT
This game can be buggy because it wasn't made for 4GB or more system RAM. I would recommend using this patch - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=233222451
Looks and sound
This Game has not aged well in terms of graphics. The lighting is fine but the textures are pretty old and there was never anything striking about the art direction. In general I find that 3D games don't age well. I do like the way the game mixed the traditional CRPG gameplay with an action-RPG control scheme and letting the player look around the area instead of always being in the isometric perspective.
The soundtrack though has stood the test of time for me. It was composed by Inon Zur who is known for his work on the Fallout games and Pathfinder Kingmaker. The music fits well with the general tone of the game and there's a good variety of combat music to stop it from feeling stale.
Combat
I've played a bunch of games with RTWP in the past few years and I think this is so far my favorite one. I'm not sure what about it made me enjoy it more than Pillars or Pathfinder. It could be how the character progression and subclasses are easier to grasp while still carrying a good amount of variety or the fact that I don't have to rest after fights for spell uses. I played a mage and this game pretty much exemplifies the trope of 'linear warriors and quadrilateral wizards'. I felt exceptionally limited at the start compared to my party members but by the end I was drowning in variety and versatility. This game has a lot of sublasses, called specializations and they can change your build a lot. I mostly played a traditional wizard for the player character but I had a fighter-templer, a shapeshifter-wizard and a healer-wizard which gave a lot of choices in how to tweak my party setup.
The game is surprisingly well balanced for the most part other than one fight in the main questline. Even the optional bosses which looked harder weren't too much for a new player like me to handle on normal difficulty.
Story and Worldbuilding
The story follows a Grey Warden who has to stop a horde of evil creatures, the darkspawn from taking over the nation of Ferelden. The quests mostly have the player going to different locations and convincing the local leaders to assist the grey wardens in fighting the threat. It's a simple but effective message of how some squabbles can be meaningless in the face of a threat which requires mass co-operation. Each leader is facing their own set of issues and is located in a separate part of the map where there a lot of different questlines set up. There's a pretty good variety of choices with different outcomes which can be affected by one's race, build and stats.
The companions of this game range from a knight Templar grey warden, a shapeshifter rogue mage, a failed assassin, a healer mage, a warrior from a vastly different culture and some others. There's a good enough variety in terms of character and classes for companions. DAO manages to keep companions active in the game by having them react to your decisions with positive or negative reputations along with personal questlines which often depend on those reputations.
The Worldbuilding of Dragon Age takes inspiration from the Blight of the Wheel of Time and Morder from Lord of the Rings but it's not a simple copy paste. There's a surprising amount of thought and detail behind the darkspawn in the setting and how the Grey Wardens are entwined with them. In general it feels like the writers really asked the logical questions to introducing certain concepts and then applied that to the world. This sounds simple but requires a lot of planning and it's really satisfying to see how everything sort of clicks and makes sense. The way mages are treated and behave is one such example. It makes sense that people with such destructive potential who are also prone to being possessed would be feared and reviled while at the same time needed for certain purposes.
Overall I recommend this game to anyone who likes story based fantasy games, is looking to get into CRPGs or wanting to try RTWP(real time with pause) gameplay.
I will be making a seperate review for the Awakening DLC which I think is massive enough to warrant a seperate version but the short version would be that it's good and you should get it too or just get the ultimate edition.

Very dark game. If compared to the Inquisition, this game has way more dark elements and very... questionable choices. Tho, characters are amazing and party banter between them makes them so deep. You easily start to care about them and they are not just some characters - especially when you know you will meet them on later games even your paths might separate in the ending of this game.
Even this game is old and graphics little bit outdated, I still enjoy this game all of my heart. I have been playing lot of older games and graphics don't really affect me, actually I enjoy the nostalgic feeling in it.
If i have to say something bad, it must be the how buggy this game is. You will learn fast to save all the time (just for pretty hard fights) and random crashing. Some bugs are fixable, but you will learn to live with them. Battling mechanisms are very different compare to the Inquisition, but it doesn't make this game bad. I just had to learn play differently.
I really recommend this game for everyone, even it might be hard and tricky sometimes.
When This is war started playing at end credits, I may have been crying little bit. I don't admit anything.

If you like Skyrim you should buy this for $2 when it goes on sale.It is a good game if you can look past the graphics but that also applies to Skyrim now.
I have not played DA in so long to do a long review.
I have never played the expansions or Ultimate Edition.I really do not care to.
Buy this for $2 and give it a go.

Packed with tons of content, DLC's and things to do, it takes you on a journey of Grey Warden destined to stop the cataclysmic Blight from sweeping across the world.
Since the game's not new, I'll simply list all the reasons why YOU should buy it and play (or replay) it again,
Featuring:
1)Great and relatively well thought-through combat system changing between commanding your 4 man and/or women party in real time or giving them commands in advance. Skills and perks give a lot of flexibility and allow for lots of fun and, occasionally gamebreakingly powerful builds and different party combinations.
2)Great plot- this is where Bioware truly shines- telling living and believable stories, be it scifi or fantasy, Beautiful and well built universe with magnificent characters, lots of quests, lots of choices, unending dialogue and funny party banter to add to the pool, among many other things.
3)Graphics- are pretty dated, but still hold up to modern standards even without visual mods, nothing too fancy, except magnificent design.
4)Voice acting is A+-mazing. There's very little to say about it except that it's on point. One of the reasons why we all love DAO characters so much.
To sum it up: overall quality is quite high and you won't be disappointed with it, exploring the cult classic first time or replaying it for the one hundredth time. This treasure receives my unending praise, gratitude and highest recommendation.

I've played this game A LOT. There are three races, three classes, and 6 origins (outside of DLC). The only reason why I don't have all the achievements is because I've played the game on consoles and other accounts when finishing the other stuff.
I have finished every Origin Story in the base game at least once through with each gender, including Human Mage and Elf Mage (except for Dalish Elves). I have experienced extremely difficult boss battles, difficult encounters, etc. I've played through the DLCs tons of different ways, and I've played tons of the old modded adventures from the now obsolete BioWare forums. There is still a bit that I haven't experienced in the game, but that's just because I have kind of glazed past it.
You're gonna see a lot of geeks call this game a masterpiece with like, 20 hours on the game. Maybe 70. Some players have over 200 hours and they've got a lot to say.
I can say confidently, with nearly 800 hours in the game as of writing this on my Steam account alone (with only a handful of those hours being from falling asleep with the game on), that this game is ACTUALLY a masterpiece. If you buy the game off Steam, buy the Ultimate Edition because the way DLC works for this game is very funky (in a bad way).
Enjoy the characters, enjoy the dialogue, enjoy the DLC, enjoy the Awakening expansion, and enjoy the tactical combat.
The only thing I can think to complain about is how busted the Awakening expansion is in terms of bugs. The expansion feels super rushed and has a lot wrong with it but I still play through it after finishing every playthrough.
Seriously though, try to find bug fixing mods and download the unofficial patches because the Awakening bugs are annoying as hell.
Golems of Amgarrak is hard, but definitely fun.
Darkspawn Chronicles is really neat and a fun romp.
Leliana's Song is... Okay.
Witch Hunt beautifully wraps up the story of this game.
Also, you can grab A Tale of Orzammar from the Dragon Age Wiki. It was an official BioWare campaign added as a promotion but you can't find it from BioWare anymore because they murdered their forum. Thankfully the file still exists from people who were smart enough to save it. It's alright, especially if you play Dwarf Nobles a lot.
The game also ages really well if you don't care about graphics (which you can update through mods).
This game needs a remaster so I can sink in another 800 hours of my life into it.

Even if you're in doubt right now about getting the DLCs, better buy the full version for a couple more dollars than having to pay for the whole thing again. You can't find it elsewhere.
If you bought this version and put a considerable amount of hours in the campaign already (my case), don't worry, purchasing the Ultimate version won't mess up your save file even though Steam considers DA:O and DA:O Ultimate as different games in your library.

DWARF LOVE MATTER 3.
DWARF LOVE MATTER

Choices carry over into Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition - your choices matter more for this first game's resolution, rather than having long lasting consequences such as in Mass Effect, but they feel impactful and can drastically affect DA:O's end chapter.
A game I happily replay every few years - maybe you will too!

My first playthrough was not longer after the game was released. I didn't have a Steam account back then (probably didn't even know of Steam =). I remember that before DAO, my favourite had been Neverwinter Nights 2 (still love it but not coming back =).
I lost count of how many times I've replayed DA Origins since then, returning to Thedas again and again, playing different characters, making different decisions. The first DA is one of those rare games which are like good books—you make it to the end only to feel that you want to start anew. (I had a similar feeling when read the Witcher (the game's good, there's no denying that, but the books are perfect). Surely, I have read all the DA comic books and some of the novels as well. There're not many things I am passionate about, but DA is one such thing.
For those who've never played the first DA game, I strongly recommend it. You may be taken aback by the looks of the game (let's face it, it has been more than 10 years), but even so, the game is still good, featuring a great storyline, charismatic and easy-to-believe characters, interesting lore, and a nice combat system.
I want to believe in BioWare and hope they'll bring back some of the DAO spirit to the fourth game.
PS: Today, I will finally destroy the Archdemon once and for all (again) and be done with the game (for the time being).

Turns out this game was a pleasant surprise.
The combat was so clunky and annoying at first, so the only thing that kept me hooked was the story. I would suggest to turn down the difficulty to the lowest to enjoy it at first. Get the hang of the gameplay and then turn up the difficulty later.
The story is very interesting and gave me somewhat of a Witcher 3 vibe from it.
TL;DR Absolutely try it!

The writing and the story, the pacing, the diverse settings, the choices you can make, the consequences, the companions, your relationship with them and the way they change and evolve over time, their banter, their reactions to your love interest, the tactical combat, the way you can customize what and how your companions use abilities, the voice actors, the soundtrack, even the graphics have aged well and still hold up in 2020.
If you like RPGs, then you MUST play this game. Get the Ultimate Edition, it's worth every penny.

Gameplay-wise it's easy unless you max out the difficulty, it really feels simillar to BG with simplified controls and 3D (you still can play with a view from top if you want).
Where it shines is the story/world it did set set up for the next instalments (The direct sequel: Origins Awakening, Dragon Age 2 and finally Inquisition), the game is full of choices that matter up to the very end of the game (if you shat on games because of moral ambiguity that's not for you). The lore is deep and i'd like to compare it with The Elder Scrolls but mind that the latter started way before with Arena in 1994 while this Dragon Age started in 2009 (almost two decades later) but let's face it: Dragon age started strong and kept going better and better, i'm really curious to see what's next...
The only complain i'd like to make directly about the game is the fact that the addons have to be earned by playing which makes them unavailable from the get go unlike the PS3 version.
And regarding to the implementation on steam: Why aren't there achievements ? You could have put the ones ALREADY IN THE GAME via the Dragon Age servers or the same ones as PS3 version...
With all that, i can't consider the steam version as full (still you have to already know about the addons and could download them on wikia but shit...)

This game just sealed Bioware as one of my favorite Developers. The story structure has a lot of similarity to Mass Effect, which is a very good thing specially how they manage to shape the world and introduced you to it.
A satisfying journey where every player could have a different road ahead accompanied by a lot of choices that wasn't just cheap and actually matters 20 hours ahead of the campaign.
The last game I've played with this kind of mechanics are Warcraft III where's battle management is very important. I'm actually not a fan of it at the beginning until it just grown on me till the end.
I don't have a lot of experience on RPG's and its genre as a whole, but I'm very proud to call this game a Masterpiece - significantly how I played this decade behind.

+ Rich lore
+ Immersive story and world building
+ Various dialogue options
+ Dozens of ways to play the game
+ Basically playing as the hero you wish to be
+ Funny, interesting, deep companions
+ Good voice acting
Cons
- Graphics are a bit iffy especially by 2020 standards
- Combat/movement needs some getting used to at first
I'd definitely suggest you to play this game. I played other RPGs as well and my favorite was Skyrim. But compared to this, I can no longer consider Skyrim a proper fully fledged RPG game.

Meanwhile, you can either buy the Ultimate Edition from GOG or Origin and transfer the DLCs to Steam folder or download from this link, https://dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Downloadable_content_(Origins) .

I just realized that there should've been the Ultimate Edition on Steam BUT unfortunately EA locked The Ultimate Edition in my country which sucks.
BUT I WANT TO FULLY EXPERIENCE THIS GAME, WHAT SHOULD I DO??
Buy this game on GOG instead if you can't access the Ultimate Edition here. The Ultimate Edition contains around 7 or more DLC aside The Awakening.

Good, intriguing story. Balanced role system. And battles. Battles is what made this game so unique for me. My advise - play it on nightmare – this is the most rewarding experience.
DA2 and 3 stand nowhere near this game. They are just cheap imitations compared to this gem. And don't look at my hours record - i completed a lot of playthroughs on origin.

origins is clunky as hell to play & has plenty of cringe gamer-appeal writing that feels dated in 2020 but its still a goodie. play a mage if you dont want a challenge, play a dwarf if you wanna idk, do the best origin stories .
the grey wardens are one of many solid worldbuilding notes in dragon ages setting. have fun w/ your roleplay and never, ever, ever talk to a dragon age fan online.

This is when Bioware was on top of their game, from the classic-tactical combat style, to the magnificent characters and writing, you can't possibly go wrong getting this game if you have the *slightest* interest in story-driven games.
Dragon Age Origins - even more so than it's sequels: 2 and Inquisition feels so alive, so special, so well-made that you just can't go wrong. If you ever wanted to play in a world that is as well built and thought out as The Lord of the Rings this is it.
For the best experience check out some QoL improvement and character creator mods as they just add to the experience without diluting it.
Again this is in my Top 3 games of all time list and I can't recommend it enough.

Playing DA:O feels like drinking coke in a rainy tuesday. This game is good. Really good.
Do I really recommend?
Yes I do. If you are D&D fan, if you are a nerd who played tons of RPGs but still hesitant to play this one, stop waiting. Dragon Age: Origins is a good old RPG which does not only offer an immersive team combat, but it also requires strategy and tactics. This game is not about commanding your companions and slaying demons. DA:O features compelling dialogs, immersive and impressive characters and companions while slightly weaving them into the whole story's texture. Though you feel like your character is a soulless motherf*cker, you tend to feel for others and shape your character with a good dialog system. You can be a jerk, you can be a merciful douchebag or a hesitant clown. This is what we all want when we play RPGs.
The dialogs between you and your companions and the dialog between them is just a lot of fun. Of course it could have been better but having a templar and a mage in your party feels like you are walking between hillary and trump.
Unfortunately, the game design tends to disappoint you continuously. Most of the time you find yourself running around in a really weird interior map. Maybe that happened because I was just dumb.
TLDR
Dragon Age: Origins sometimes disappointed me with poor map designs. I don't remember how many times I closed the game because of feeling overwhelmed. But that is what makes it great I guess. This game requires struggle, this game offers struggle. Even though I had to convince myself, this game has soul, folks. It somehow manages to captivate you with its characters, storyline, companions and the combat system. I feel nice after giving 50 hours to this game.

Although it is an amazing game, there is no easy way to purchase all of the DLC for it through Steam. At regular price the base game costs $20, with the much needed Awakening DLC costing another $10. The other 8 expansions for this game can't be purchased through steam, but rather through Bioware points. If you decide to pick those up, it'll cost another $60 out of your pocket.
Instead of paying the $90 you'd need to spend on this version, buy the EXACT SAME THING for $30 in the Ultimate Version.
Edit 6/23/2016: Another steam sale, so my review is high up again. I just want to note that the Ultimate Edition of this game is region locked, so some places will not be able to get it. The Ulitmate Version might be available on Origin, so I'd check there. If it's still unavaible, then it's okay getting this version of the game.
Edit 4/5/2018: GOG also sells the Ultimate Edition of the game, often for cheaper, so I reccomend checking there as well!
Edit 8/22/2019: On June 30th, 2016 the full price of the Awakening DLC was dropped from $20 to $10. The review above has been updated to reflect this price change, however it's still not worth buying this version over the Ultimate Edition.
