Über das Spiel
Walk anywhere or drive a train in a 256 km2 world, covered in rich vegetation, mountains, fields, lakes, rivers and a massive railroad network, spanning 15 diverse industries and towns. Days and nights seamlessly cycle over the valley, with dynamic clouds, fog, rain and environment sounds spicing it all up. Change the switches, board the vehicles, leave them, take them somewhere specific - the choice is yours.
Derail Valley depicts complex intricacies of diesel locomotives with varying transmission types, as well as steam engines, and does so in depth. Through behavior, sounds, physics and interaction, vehicles' characteristics are designed to fully immerse and challenge you. You might even learn something new about them! On top of that, you'll find yourself spontaneously involved in coupling, servicing, brake securing, shunting and other railroad procedures.
Every location offers and receives certain cargo, forming a dynamic chain that you take part in. Deliveries are procedurally generated; they vary among themselves and almost no delivery will be the same as the other. Deliver cargo between industries, or do the shunting and logistics that help the stations create more deliveries. Pick your orders freely, move cars throughout the valley according to your licensing and locomotive availability.
Earn money by completing deliveries. Master efficient driving and look after the vehicles you use to minimize fuel and repair costs. Buy new items and licenses that allow you access to more vehicles and orders. Alternatively, play in sandbox mode where economy is not in focus; where you can create custom scenarios, have fun doing whatever and capture fun videos using built-in photography tools.
Whether you prefer turning every knob manually or taking a laid back approach from a birds-eye view, difficulty parameters have got you covered. From the preferred camera view down to the ease of coupling, difficulty customization makes it possible for you to find the challenge and comfort levels that you're happy with.
There are currently 6 locomotive types in the game, each based on a different technology or offered with drastically different characteristics. With more in the pipeline, the simulation is built to support locomotive mods as well. Other than the powerhouses, there are a few work train vehicles, over ten types of cars and more than 50 types of cargo available, as well.
Be it a derailment, collision, blown traction motor, boiler explosion, failed brakes, HAZMAT disaster or even something as mild as wheelslip on a rainy slope, Derail Valley doesn't just present you with a popup screen when you make a mistake - you get to experience the consequences of your actions, even if they're a rare occurrence.
Derail Valley not only supports the major PC-based VR headsets, but has been built to support them from the ground up. Experience the game spatially present and using your own hands to operate the controls. This is the ultimate experience, the closest there is to being a real railroader. Additionally, you can seamlessly share the same playthrough among the PC and VR sessions - choosing the platform based on your mood.
Whether you are new to trains or an experienced veteran, the game features tutorials that are quick to get you going. However, a comprehensive user manual also exists, for when you want to dive deep into the details.

Why that? Cause it provides the gameplay i was looking for in other games like Train Simulator or Train Sim World but didn't found there.
So what is that? An open world, where you are basically in railroad dark country and have to do all railroad jobs yourself, from shunting, over route planing, throw switches, running different sorts of trains. And all of this in VR.
Sure some simulation aspects currently fall a little short, but with the announced major update Simulation, alot of this is gonna be changed.
But as said, overall the best railroad simulation i currently play. Well worth the full price, even more if you ask me. :)

EN:
The game does pretty well for an Early Access Game. Graphics, sounds, train operation, everything fits. The good tutorial and the nice ingame manuals are convincing.
So is the setting: fantasy-locos on an imaginary track with fictitious signing − nevertheless it's consistent. In addition, you get role play and open world elements.
Of course, as the game is in development, there are some minor bugs. Concerning terrain and vegetation display errors, signs standing too close to the track etc. And the loading and shutdown times (how come?) are way too long.
But all in all the game works fine and runs stable. I think, after the previous patches, which fixed a lot of errors and hardware issues, improved graphics, but also introduced some nice new features (for example multi unit control) and comfort functions, now is a good time to join the game! And I'm happily looking forward for the things to come (more locos, day & night cycle, passenger transport, NPC trains, mod support, ...).
Finally I've got to say, the pricing is very fair for the scope offered (compared to other, DLC based rail sims).

Soundtechnisch schonmal sehr gut.

Anspruchsvolle Strecken, nervenaufreibende Steigungen, Abhänge, haarige Abstiege, schiebende Waggons.

i would love to play this game in vr but i don't have a vr headset and am speaking of the non vr mode purely.
the map isn't too big and it could take up to an hours to cross it for one job which i think is perfect, if it was 20 minutes the map could get boring very quick and if it was like 2 hours, it would take a very long time to build up money for licenses and stuff.
there are some bad points but the only one that really stands out for me was the game glitching.
i set up a long train, started a job, just pulled out of the station then all of a sudden splits into 3.
i reverse it connect it all back up then pull forward again and same thing.
when i go back to see what happened some wagons were vibrating and shaking and had 0% health which when i finally managed to complete the job, cost me $140K for absolutely no reason and i am still paying it off.
basically in short. get this game if you like train simulators but with that extra bit of realism where if you go to fast you derail and instead of ending the mission you have to fix what you've done, rerail the train and reconnect it.
definitely give it a go if you have a vr headset
and maybe don't play it on a 2015 macbook pro, could be where i had some problems.
worst case if you don't like the game, only play it for 2 hours and get a refund from steam.
i thought i played it for like 5-10 hours and just seen at the time of typing this i've played 27 hours.
you can easily lose track of time and enjoy the game.
i should also add this is early development, and the developers are working on a ton of new things for this game. i've just built up to the large diesel loco (DE6) and was thinking there aren't many locos in the game but they will possibly be adding more soon, as well as weather cycle, day/night cycle, maybe even mod support so you can drive your favourite locos.
just bear that in mind if you should come into issues.

The world is on the small side, distances between stations are way too short. Often shunting trains together takes longer than driving to a destination.
Station designs are either placeholders, or made by someone who hasn't even bothered looking at google maps of a steel mill.
Auto generated Trees clip through tracks, thankfully they don’t have collision.
Currently there are only 3 locomotives available.
Driving trains is satisfying and the reason why I recommend playing DV. Trains have the right amount of mass and momentum. While I didn’t like shunting at first, it became the thing I enjoy doing most in DV.
The next update Simulator promises to fix most issues I have with the world itself and after that industry and passenger services are planned.
Sadly development is progressing at glacial pace.
I recommend buying it now as each update will increase the price.

This game is hard, its realistic and time consuming; but honestly I love it in all aspects so far. Both VR and normal play?? I wish more devs would do that, thats awesome!!! I just got the steam locomotive (2nd tier engine out of the current 3) and learned how to use that with a remote controlled helper diesel to get up steep grades.
You even get to build your own train cars with shunting, and have a large map that takes a significant amount of time to cross but not too extensive. Graphically at Ultra all settings is great, no lag except for some weird train jitters at times but that may just be the physics.
If you love trains, get this. I cannot stress it enough, this game has scratched an itch that no other game was able to fill so far. Great job devs, I will be with you for all of your development :) <3

It's apparent that whoever designed and coded DV has a deep knowledge of railroad logistics. The game's complexity opens itself up to a few problems during its time in Early Access mode. They are minor for the most part.
If someone hasn't already done so, a guide needs to be posted on the keyboard commands. Print it out along with the keyboard command graphic page. You'll get more enjoyment and less frustration if you do.
Riding on the heels of graphical instructions are some of the maps dealing with yard switching and what all the strange signals mean. While I can appreciate the creator's desire to heighten the realism with RW signage, it would be nice if there was a noob version to hold our hand while we learn the game.
DV is an impressive and immersive railfan game that blows away the competition. It comes at a cost, however. I'm not sure how many are willing to invest what it takes to get the most enjoyment from it.

But Derail Valley gets it. It captures that childlike fascination with everything train, and lets you run wild in a sandbox that's been carefully crafted so you can play around with driving, riding, putting together, and crashing trains to your heart's content in the most kinesthetically satisfying way possible (and that's playing it in regular pancake non-VR mode!) And all that for basically the price that a company like Dovetail will charge you for a single poorly made locomotive DLC.
Derail Valley is already incredible value for money, but there are a ton of upcoming features that give it great promise to become a respectable name in this space. If trains excite you, don't hesitate another second about getting this game!

In most simulators you get a penalty or a warning for not following the rules, here you gotta count on your own judgement, your own thinking and your own logic, or it's your wallet (trust me when I say this, it ain't cheap to derail)
You gotta learn about the routes, the capacity of the locomotives and the planning of setting together a train set before departure to ensure the greatest possible efficiency (mostly economy wise)
This is a simulator that says: ''Here are some manuals and a map, rest is up to you'' and that's the beauty of it
I bought this game because I'm a train freak, but I got so much more than some average train simulator, and I love it for that

After the tracks were updated to have higher top speeds, this game has been very enjoyable to do the missions, especially the steam train ones that force you to keep track of steam pressure, firebox temp, turns coming, junctions, top speeds, incline, route, tight corners, all while shoveling coal and keeping the water topped.
If you want a simple yet immersive sim, this is the game for you

Quick background: I'd gotten dis-interested in the train game/sim I had, focusing instead on other things but a chance YT video changed all that and I decided to give this Derail Valley are go.
Derail Valley doesn't attempt to replicate any real-world map or track yet it delivers a map that is entirely believable and interesting. It's also very much a hands on experience. You need to plan the route yourself and make all the critical decisions. The train doesn't spawn in at job start. You have have find it or even build it! There is persistence from one gaming session to the next. Your engine will be exactly where you left it. There is no multiplayer.
The engines are well modeled, beautifully textured and convincingly sound engineered right out of the box.
The DE2 shunter may not grab attention when parked beside the DE6 but let me assure you, you will be surprised at how much fun this not so little engine is.
Derail Valley is very much in the category of a simulator in my opinion. The tutorial that starts you out, is well designed, easy to navigate, interesting and educational without being long winded or dragged out.
At the end of this, you are essentially an independent contract Train driver with a few bucks in your pocket and a license to operate the DE2.
The Job system is well conceived and designed. You will need to read through the offers available (there are many) to find your next job. The process of validating your selection provides more important detail and once the job is complete, concluding the contract is quite unique and engaging. There's a real sense of getting invested into the job. You need to have a think about how you're going to execute the task. You'll need to reference the maps and plan your routing. Using a radio handset, you're able to reset switch points and all the time, managing your power, your speed and your progress hopefully avoiding a derail incident.
This is particularly fun during shunting operations around a rail yard and building trains, or consists. I was surprised at how much enjoyment and sense of accomplishment Derail Valley delivers during this activity. I was afraid it would be boring but it was far from boring, and once you build the train, you have the possibility to drive it to it's destination if you so wish.
So you're on the track heading to your destination and the sounds and audibles from the sim really enhance your experience. The landscape is nicely crafted and offers believable terrain and views. It is fair to note that the graphics are not 'bleeding edge' in 2021 and there are some concessions you'll need to accept in this regard. With that said, the graphics are good and unless graphics are your absolute 'no compromise' criteria, you won't be let down at the end of the day because the 'game-play' makes up for it.
As with any early access title, it's a concern as to weather the developer will stay the course and improve the product's functionality, features and performance. Player expectations have matured in the main and from what I have seen, the developer has not failed on this expectation and there are plans to release the next evolution in Q1' 2022. It's also notable that the developer, already made the decision to fix, correct and improve the existing product before expanding it and the results of this work have already been delivered to the community. See the overall rating here on Steam to judge for yourself how this decision has been received by the community. This was the right call IMHO and is part of the reason why I decided to buy this product in early access. (I usually avoid early access ).
The price is honestly excellent. Value for money is very high.

Train driving, it may not seem very fun to you, but if you play this, you can really start to like it.
The career idea is very... Unique to other train sims. You borrow locomotives from the main train company, Derail Valley, and you have to pay for the resources and damage you do.
And the fact that the devs have a DLC free business strategy, you wont really have to dish out a load of money to get optional stuff that you want. *cough cough* Dovetail *cough* Games *cough*
There is meant to be another major update at the end of the year, or early next year which will include even more stuff.
Yeah there are small little bugs, but not game changing.
And the fact you can... run a tank of petrol down a cliff, you can get some pretty cool results.
Of course you would never be able to do that in real life.

dont get me wrong, if done right this could be the next massive train simulator including your own business. planning how you shunt the consist to how you need to uncouple then at the destination and driving the locomotive as effiecently as possible to save on the cost of maintenance and fuel. although needs work driving the steam loco with a long consist behind you is one of the best sight i have seen on a game of this type.
in the time i have had the game the only thing that has been added to the game from the original release thats worth speaking about is the larger diesel locomotive. but the developers seem to be spending more time releaseing little things like a boombox for the cab to make it seem like they are still improving the game. looking at the roadmap of the devs plan for the game it could be a few years before anything major is added to the game where it will be worth buying. and even with the small patches and updates happening every 2-3 months only one over the last year has actually interested me enough to come back and play the game again.
this game has changed so little in the time i have had it in my steam library. that after finishing the game up to the point where your waiting for the next major update and have to start the game again to experience the new content. i would say wait till there is some progress on the roadmap before purchasing.

But this game...
So a story, I was trying to move 2 loads at once from the food factory to the Iron Ore East and Coal mines. My first day of attempts went horribly, despite having 2 engines going for it I could not get it up all the hills. I only had the shunters unlocked so could not use a more powerful engine. Frustrated I gave up and nearly quit the game.
Wanting to give the game a fair chance before quitting I had another go the following night looking at a couple of guides and videos on how to best climb hills I went for it with one little shunter so I did not have to manage so many engines. I slowly climbed the hill all the way to nearly the top when... I ran out of fuel... I have never sworn so much but then as I swore the momentum of the train just about carried it over the crest of the hill and it rolled slowly down the gradient into the Iron Ore mine so I could complete the first job and refuel with no more hills to climb to get the the other destination.
I have never felt so good at achieving something in a game even when completing AAA games with mega budget stories and missions which from a small indie simulator is an unbelievable achievement. Get this game, it is a crime that it is not better known.

- Signals: there are no signals at all. It would be nice to have even a rudimentary multiple aspect signalling system, facilities that grant you access and some sort of dispatch to make it more realistic.
- Environment: the world is literally dead and empty, not a single car moves, not any other trains. On top of the previous suggestion, it would be nice to have other trains around you, having to stop to wait for other trains to pass, etc.
- Variety: only 3 vehicles available (the little shunter machine, the steam loco and the diesel one). Maybe it would be nice to have some more, and why not, other type of transports (passengers? the stations are already built in the game)
- Maybe some kind of online gaming experience?
Nevertheless this is a very funny and absorbing game if you are into trains, so go for it, for the price and the hours of fun it's a steal!

Update after 46 additional hours of play... The early game, and mid-game are great. Now that I've unlocked the licenses, and done multi-de6 large hauls, it feels a bit less compelling. Hopefully, as the product develops there will be more added for late game activities. Still, definitely recommend.

Easy to learn and operate:
At the beginning, you will get a short tutorial, which is interesting and on-point. The game is actually fun from the very beginning of the tutorial. You will obtain some in-game brochures and maps where you can quickly find any information you need.
Rewarding, allows progress:
You complete jobs for which you receive money. You buy licenses to be able to operate more locomotives, handle more types of cargo, run long trains, process multiple jobs at once or use multiple locomotives at once in one train.
Bought licenses actually allow you to take better-paid jobs.
Detailed and realistic:
Everything very precisely designed and built: Locomotive interiors, world, station layouts, sounds (including exact engine and brake sounds and exact sounds as the train passes the track joints), physics (engine force, inertia, braking). The train behaves exactly like the player builds it - Were brake pipes correctly connected? Was locomotive control cable correctly connected to be able to control multiple locomotives at once?
Jobs are fun:
The job consists of multiple steps: find your cars on the source station (browse the station layout map if needed), turn the locomotive to the correct direction if needed (using turntable which has to be manually operated), couple the train (this has to be manually done and it is really fun), go to the destination station (browse the world map if needed), find the destination track, uncouple the train.
Operate track switches along the way.
Feels natural:
You make everything from the first-person view. You really operate the buttons/levers by dragging them. Information is provided in a couple of brochures in your inventory - you search here by flipping pages. Job listings are available on a table, simply take which one you want. Want to pay? Simply insert a wallet.
Economic model is not a burden:
You can choose between manually servicing and re-filling your locomotive or paying all fees at once.
Thrilling and calm moments:
Going through a long track section with a constant speed? Take the time to observe the nice country around you. Or make screenshots of your train passing tunnels, bridges, or interesting track sections across the hills.
Approaching destination station which you have never been before? Better quickly study the station layout, operate switches and control train speed to safely arrive at the correct track.
Move freely:
Jump out of the train to watch the train from the outside. Jump to the locomotive roof or onto some car to watch your train and the nice views along the way. Jump to the locomotive cabin back to operate the train and check the speed.
Quickly jump long distances using the F key to navigate quickly along the train, inside a station yard or through the world.
Optimize:
As you will progress in the game, you will of course think about optimizing your workflow and efficiency.
The game allows taking multiple jobs at once. Carefully think about which combination of jobs returns the highest profit, and how to couple the train as quickly and efficiently as possible to complete these jobs.
You will learn when you can switch off the engine to save fuel and still be able to reach the destination only thanks to the train inertia.
You will be tempted to let the locomotive moving, quickly jump off, run around the station to prepare switches and take a job, and then jump back to the locomotive.
Learn and discover at your own pace:
I was able to get along by only knowing a few stations and only taking jobs between them. I discovered the rest of the world later. Taking multiple jobs at once, operating multiple types of locomotives or more locomotives at once is not needed to earn money - it is something which can be tried later in the game.
Playability:
The game is designed in a way you won't have to fight any controls or obstacles. You will be able to quickly do what you want. You can pay to automatically re-rail the de-railed cars.
Game start:
One nice very valuable detail: You press PLAY in the Steam library and it takes you directly to the game itself (with last saved game loaded) without the need for you to walk through unnecessary intro videos, menus and multiple stages of game loading between that.
Linux:
For me, it works in Linux using Proton without any issue or glitch.
The only problem I found is the somewhat incomplete Load/Save system:
- it is not possible to select a save game to load (need to manually operate the files in SaveGameData)
- it is not completely clear what is actually saved - after loading, e.g. the previously moving train is stopped, the brochures in inventory are always set at the first page
But it is not a big problem - and of course we have to consider it is Early Access now.
Other than that, the game feels finished and without issues.

Going trough stations finding routes with no railcars and building your own trains with multiple different contracts is great. The distances are not too long and the gameplay doesnt feel too repetitive. Also the small grind for money and different locomotives feels balanced and keeps you engaged.
However at the time of writing the physics that make the game great, also make it unenjoyable for me.
Everyother job i do the cars get derailed for no apparent reason resulting in fines that make me lose all the money since the car damage goes from 0% to 100% basicly always. This may happen in random spots while going well below the speedlimit. There are also spots on the map where the rails sink into the gorund and make the train derail.
I hope this gets fixed and ill be able to recommend the game. For now tough, the constant derailings make the progress halt and the gameplay unenjoyable.

The game has realistic engines requiring a learning curve, with gameplay progression from a tiny diesel engine to a full steam locomotive. From what I've experienced, it works in both VR and non-VR modes seamlessly, some minor features like zooming (obviously) are unavailable in VR but can easily be added with the power of mods. However, this game really shines with one simple fact - Derail Valley is probably one of the best standing-only VR games on the market. I have very little space to move around in VR, and far too many VR games place items behind my cupboard or half a meter outside my window, because they're designed for a whole room of space while I'm playing with a tape X on the floor to make sure I don't step out of the one meter of available space and smash my controller into a coffee table. Being able to drive a train while basically standing completely still and not destroying my room means the world to me.
There are some very minor issues. Moving from the basic diesel engine to the steamer requires quite a steep learning curve, which may be off-putting for those looking to sit back and enjoy rather than having a very hands-on experience. Once you've got the hang of things however, driving the steamer is very satisfying. There are currently only 3 engines available, but each one is fairly different and more are planned to be added. Additionally, the map has very minor landscape and texturing issues, with next to no impact on gameplay.
If you're like me and you want a VR game that needs extremely small amounts of space to play, I would absolutely recommend this game. Hell, buy it anyway, it's great fun to play on VR or PC, and when you get bored you can throw a steam engine off a cliff at 130kmh and ride it down to the end.

I think the current shortcomings (Feedback):
- Main Menu
- Controller Settings for PC in game interface.
- Correction and facilitation of the inventory system. (when you get a lot, other things disappear)
- Switching between different camera angles while using the train.
- Manual Saving and Save file management.
- Not being unable to skip the tutorial when starting a new game.
As I said; the game will get much better over time. Good work Altfuture.

I can confidently say that this game is no copy of something else, and is a beautiful creation. The mod community that is slowly developing around this has many great skins (which I'm sadly not good enough at making skins for video games, otherwise the Tennessee Central livery would be a thing), and have been able to add the concepts that the developer has yet to implement as base game components (completely forgivable for a project this large and detailed).
TL;DR, this is well worth the price of admission for the rail fan with a good gaming machine.

Forward some years and I am looking at a sim to give a friend as Christmas present. I try with TS2021 and quickly get outraged: You pay the sim, it won't come with free roam, and while you get free trains at the workshop, they all require paid DLC. No steam trains to ride, unless you pay for a steam pack PLUS a map pack, all at a full game price... So I decide to try this game again and wow, glad I did!
Yeah, you still start with the tiny diesel and a tutorial (skippable), but you can walk around a world with a lot of detail. I decided to do the missions and I had a real blast! There is always something to do, which I suppose is not that realistic, but the five minutes went into an hour, and now I am craving more. Don't mind to work my ass off for that steam train license! It doesn't feel grindy, and I honestly think it went from quirky joke game to honest nice fun. I totally recommend it if you like trains (even if TS2021 wouldn't rip you off with DLC, I totally choose this one. All I wish it could improve is some sort of map editor, or simply a bigger map!
I think a game is good when the biggest complain is that you want more of the content it gives you.

Having played numerous Train Sim games all the way back to Microsoft Train Sim, I can say hands down this is the best so far. I have thoroughly enjoyed this sim far above the others. It is so much more interactive than any other I've played. You have to monitor your trains speed, temperature, oil, and other gauges, all while trying to not derail. However, the game does have a steep learning curve. The initial switcher engine you start with is pretty easy to get the hang of, but the steam engine...quite difficult to learn. Its also important to remember, this game is early access. There ARE bugs and glitches (see below). For me, the fun far outweighed them.
Pros:
-Doesn't require a nasa computer to run despite being built for VR
-Extremely interactive
-Detailed trains with lots of buttons and switches
-Excellent sounds
-Realistic (you can derail and there's really well designed wheel slip)
Cons:
-Steep learning curve
-Terrain has some glitches (holes where you can see through)
-Steam engine definitely needs work. Many of the levers are difficult to move in PC mode. I'm sure it'd be better in VR, but the levers do not work well with a 2D mouse. Additionally, I've run into some weird physics between the engine and the tender
-Other bugs (signs aren't always the right speed limit which leads to derailments, stuttering, etc)
Despite the cons I would highly recommend this game to anyone who is willing to learn. It is a truly incredible feeling going through the steps to fire up a steam locomotive (YOU LITERALLY GET TO THROW IN THE LIGHTER TO LIGHT THE BOILER), then blowing the whistle, and then hearing it echo through the canyon you're in. Makes me really wish I had VR.
TL;DR: 10/10 would accidentally send a train flying off a curve again.

I still recommend it, for fans of model railroads, but definitely NOT for someone who expects signals, delays, other traffic and all those elements that would make it a _railroad sim_. Other than that, it is enjoyable. The train dynamics is reasonably good, the moderately involving coupling system is good, the manual refueling/repair is good, even the earning system is decent. Yet, this is a railroad simulator in only one sense - it lets you drive trains.
This is a very nicely done locomotive and train simulation, but in no way a sim of railroad operations. I would call it a complicated arcade, shaped like railroad game. Too bad.
I still give it a thumbs up, but this game will NOT accommodate players who want to experience driving trains on a network. It is a grand model train game, where you are the sole actor. Too bad.

I've been playing on the PC version but will soon try out the VR one. Others have complained that the PC version is unplayable, besides a few glitchy camera angles, I have had no problems. The M&K controls are simple and operating trains have never been easier. In games like Train Sim World or Train Sim 2020, you can be overwhelmed just doing the tutorial with the amount of controls and buttons and things to just get the train started. Derail Valley does an excellence job of fixing that: Flip the fuses, turn the engine over, switch the reverser, remove the brakes, and open the throttle. They explain this through a simple manual that you can keep on you at all times.
You also have realistic coupling mechanics, braking physics, and you have to manually switch every turnout (with the help of your trusty comms). You choose certain jobs based on the tractive effort of your available locos, the destination, and whether or not you have the required licenses. Once accepting a job, you must plan out your route, figure out which yard to pick up your cargo, how to get out of the yard, and which yard you must drop off your cargo at.
I spent a good 3 hours just resetting the tutorial because I kept fucking up, but once I got past that, the game is a lot more fun.
If I had to recommend any train simulator, this would be the one.

♦ Unique Playing style (like never before with other Train sims)
♦ Realistic coupling, loading & Loco start-up, etc
♦ Good graphics, esp foliage and tracks
♦ Various jobs, good payouts
Now the bad:
~~~~~~~~~~~
♦ You are alone!, deserted valley
♦ No AI Trains
♦ No People or animals
♦ No cars, traffic
♦ immovable tree leaves, grass
♦ No Day & Night cycle
Well, initially it was very interesting, but the game soon gives a boredom feel without any AI trains or people around. Even the Station remains deserted and for whom are we working for??
Hope the developers takes care of this soon
However it's still worth to play
What sets this sim apart is the open world: You can start your day doing a shunting job preparing cargo to be delivered, and later actually delivering it. Then you can unload the cargo at the destination, do some logistical runs to move empty cars...
Your money earned is used to pay fees (mistakes are costly, fuel is costly) and unlock new licences.
The biggest issues for me are the environment bugs (signals out of place, terrain missing), the speed signaling which still needs some work, and the bad performance and graphical quality.
This is a train sim that won't suck your wallet dry (except the in-game one) like Dovetail does. Support these devs!
With a little organisation, you can: collect empty railcars, load them with cargo, construct them into a consist, take a job moving that consist to its destination, unload the cargo, and store the cars throughout the destination rail yard. No more teleporting into a fully loaded train and just driving it to a given destination - this game is incredibly hands-on, and rewards you handsomely for your effort.
All this without mentioning that the game is *still in early access*, despite being possibly the most involved train sims ever created. If you're in doubt about how many hours you'll get out of this, go take a look at the Roadmap or Community Unlocks on the Derail Valley website - the devs seem to push content as fast as I can reasonably experience it! The game is already the best train sim on the market, yet there always seems to be an update round the corner to add new content or address niggling issues.
Buy this game.
Since there isn't a fuel station at the ore station, I decide to see if I can make it back to an oil station I passed on the way. Luckily the way back is mostly all downhill gradient allowing me to keep the engine in neutral and occasionally use brakes to slow down as needed. I get to the oil station, work out where the refueling station is and make my way towards it. Just as I'm getting to it, the engine runs out of fuel and I literally coast to a stop in front of the refueling pump(had to apply some brakes last minute to make sure I didn't overshoot it).
10/10 Great experience.
P.S. I wasn't playing in VR.
Dovetail Games needs to pay attention and step up, or get off. With their broken and laggy engine that a supercomputer could never run, broken+overpriced content, and no real engine rework in over a decade - charging full price for every 'iteration' that is the same damn broken game it was when it launched originally.
While Derail Valley is still in alpha at the time of this posting - the bugs are minimal, and the immersion is real. Even without a VR set you can comfortably navigate the world and experience the white knuckle terror for yourself. The sounds and graphics are brilliant, and give a real earthy feel for every set of points you roll through at breakneck speed, trying to make that deadline.
I can't wait to see what content will be added in the coming development.
John Rambo gives two thumbs up.
The big highlight in the game is the physics. I have had nearly every Train Simulator since Microsoft Train Simulator and nothing gives quite the same feeling of authenticity of wheels losing grip, squeeling too fast around a corner etc. I also love the sandbox idea behind this game. Being able to get out of the train and interact with the environment is great for immersion. The developers appear to be active and interested in the community, a great (and essential) thing to see in any EA title.
With it being EA, there are still improvements to be made. The scenery is stunning in some places but in others it's jarringly aweful - such as high-rise flats being seemingly randomly placed without roads or anything else that are supposed to represent a town. The two locomotives included are fun but not massively challenging. There need to be more of them. The same goes for general content: You complete deliveries, get money, buy stuff with said money and move on. This is fine and good but it doesn't take long for you to have everything.
There is so much potential in this game and the points that I have raised are largely going to be addressed if the developers follow their roadmap, which I have every confidence they will. That said, I think it's important for purchasers of Early Access games to understand at what point they're buying into a game. In this case it's a great premise that's already good fun but rough around the edges and not huge in content at this stage.
The game itself can be fun but it has a few bugs that haven't been fixed within the last year, taking away the fun that I was talking about.
You will derail. You will. Very soon. Yes, it's in the name of the game but it has been addressed as a bug by the devs, yet it hasn't been changed.
25km/h around a not too sharp corner? Say bye.
Shunting around some wagons at the station while the train is at around 15km/h? Well, start over again.
Also, development and especially communication between the devs and the community seems to be very slow. We haven't had a single update within the last six months and only two status updates in the news.
If you like train games.
If you would love to drive the train.
then this is for you.
Drive too fast and derailment is eminent.
The Loco you start with can haul up to 350Tons of freight.
The STEAM Loco takes all the rest.
In this game you actually have to read the Manuals for the Loco's or you will not get far.
VR and Non-VR or Mouse and keyboard can be used.
For the First loco you can even get a in-game controller to do shunting Jobs.
And don't forget to control the rail-switches or you will not get at your destination
New Big Update is Comming in Q1 2020.
New Loco and freight and much more.
