It reminds me a lot of the old zelda games with it´s exploring, puzzles and combat.
a beautiful world walking on a thin line between somber and charming, with some nice music that isn´t overbearing and some fun and charming characters.
the only negative thing i could say would be that i wished for the boss fights to be harder than they were.

Klare Kaufempfehlung!

The game is an ultimately easier fusion of Zelda and the Souls-like games, which also enables it to not only bring it's unique blend to the table but also potentially introduce people to titles pertaining to both genres.
It's no masterpiece, but it sure is charming and unique and definitely worth a playthrough.

Hard when it needed to be with memorable bosses, atmosphere and especially the music in this game are top tier. I highly recommend giving this game at least 1 play through yourself!

Two things though...
1. Give a map in Death's Door 2. It's small, but it ain't fun wandering sometimes.
2. That frog boss was a bit boring. Same thing over and over, lasts too long.

The levels promote exploration, with rewarding secrets and well written side content.
Combat is smooth, with responsive controls and excellent rhythm. Every and creature has a flow, and when you sync up you are an untouchable reaper of death (ahem). Generally there are three types of encounters: Traversal, arena, and boss fights. All of them are challenging and rewarding to master.
After the credits roll there is some notable end game content, so you completionists stick around. I found none of it to be a waste of time.
The weakest part part of the experience is the writing. It is clever and funny at times, but awkward, childish, and tone-deaf at others. Still, it delivers a simple and wholesome message about change, life, and death.
Death's Door has a deep sense of polish, an awkward charm, and clever mechanics.
I can easily recommend this game.

Main combat uses a simple, yet satisfying, combination of dodge, melee (light attack, heavy attack) and magic, including a decent selection of weapons which need to be found around the map, while new abilities are normally unlocked throughout the story. There are four stats (Strength, Dexterity, Haste and Magic) that you can increase using the souls obtained from defeated enemies or hidden around the map, with each upgrade being more expensive than the previous one. The game is challenging, but also forgiving, as dying doesn’t come with any penalty. Those who are well trained with soulslikes won’t find it much difficult.
There is a great roster of enemies, each one with different attacks. Most of them are easy to take down individually, but there will certainly be more challenging moments where you will need to survive hordes of enemies. Boss fights are on a good level too, though I wished there were a few more.
The game’s world gives a great sense of discovery. There are three distinct regions connected to one main hub, each one including boss fights, short puzzles and cleverly hidden secrets. Just like a metroidvania, backtracking is important if you aim to explore the entirety of this world, with new areas being only accessible after unlocking new abilities. Unfortunately there isn’t a map, which somehow is understandable, but could have been really useful as a bonus for completing the story. Thankfully, you will meet a few characters who can give you hints on items and secrets that you may have missed. As a tip for starters who want to fully complete the game at 100% completion, I can suggest you to plant life seeds in every single pot you find, even when your health is already full. You will understand why when the time comes.
Performance-wise I didn’t experience any problem, the game runs smooth and is perfectly polished. I beated the main story under 10 hours and completed the end-game content (including a secret ending) in nearly 13 hours with 100% completion. There isn’t any replayability after that, but the length is already good for a game of this scope and for the asked price.

Verdict: 8.4/10
Without any doubt, Death’s Door is one of the best 2021 indie games. A charming fable-like adventure and a must-play title for action lovers who are looking for some simple, but challenging combat, and a minimal, but compelling, story set in a beautiful bleak world.

Impressive feat for a studio of this size and cannot wait to see what they do next. Probably my favorite indie game of 2021 and a clear recommendation for everyone who likes great games.

It's worth supporting, being an indie with an extremely small team, but I just didn't have a good time playing this.
Art style, music, both great.
However the combat is tedious, not well designed imo. The way dodge works is like a dash not a dodge, the timing of enemy attacks and the way they sometimes lock onto you right before the attack, falling off ledges while attempting to dodge, the invincibility after getting hit is inconsistent, especially when multpile enemies soft trap you and attack, which also is a thing that happens and finally the fact that they don't get staggered or interrupted. For all these reasons and perhaps others that I can't realise right now, I don't like the combat at all.
Even still I would recommend it if there was a worthwhile story behind it, but imo this isn't one. Characters might as well not exist because they are just NPCs not even worth talking to, you don't get to know anyone and they play no role in the story. Everything feel extremely gimmicky with regards to the characters, names, designs etc. The story itself is really short and mostly develops towards the end, very underwhelming, there is almost nothing there.
I wish it was otherwise because I really want to like this, but I found myself just pushing through the whole time just to get it done, I didn't enjoy this besides the music and some boss battles.

Between the adorable low-poly graphics and blissfully nostalgic music, the atmosphere is uniquely charming. The combat is easy to pick up and feels great, but the small health bar will guarantee a good rush of adrenaline during the more intense battles. The buildup sequences before the bosses are masterful crescendos, the bosses themselves are appropriately climactic. And the secret-hunting will make you feel smart.
Some may find the absence of a map frustrating, but the world is built around that limitation, and it works just fine in practice. Don't let that deter you.

- Everyone's right, this game needs some kind of map.
- Insane amounts of backtracking, with no map.
- Tons of secrets to find, none of which can be accessed until much later in the game. With no map.
- Leveling is trash. Each stat point costs a lot of souls and barely makes a difference, even when they're all maxed.
- I [strike]nearly[/strike] beat the game and [strike]haven't[/strike] never* upgraded my health or mana. The same thing happened in Blasphemous, another great game with some bad design choices.
- Bosses are cool, minibosses are pretty cool, but enemies are reskinned copy-paste jobs.
All of this adds up to a game that looks amazing, but lacks a sense of progress. I'm fighting the same things I was fighting six hours earlier. Three of my four spells are just projectiles with varying AOEs. I wanted to explore this big open world, but wandering off the intended path only leads to a dozen locked doors you can't open until you get the appropriate spell. Because of this, the game feels surprisingly linear and restrictive, and exploration is a complete waste of time until you get all your toys.
No sense of exploration, no sense of direction, and no sense of progression. That's a great way to ruin an otherwise fantastic game. Still, I respect Acid Nerve and I love the world they have built. Hopefully they take player feedback to heart and make some improvements for their next title.

If you pay a little attention you will notice that there is more stuff hidden in the game, waiting to be discovered.
Some may say it's a little short, but for someone who rarely finishes a game like me, it's perfect. You get a really, really good game for that price.
