Unfortunately in the year 2021, there's barely any servers and not a lot of players playing anymore.
This's a dead game now, which's a big shame.
It's a small game (roughly 44MB) and can be played on just about any computer, and has the arsenal present in HL1, but unfortunately the players seemed to of moved on.
If you do decide to pick it up, make sure to invite some friends that also own it to get the most out of it. However, as it stands, I cannot recommend spending $5 on this, even if it's on sale.

No, it's not worth the money. This game is just Quake but in the GoldSource engine. You can find enjoyment if you play with bots, but they'res barley anyone who plays this anymore. Just buy Counter-Striker, Team Fortress Classic or anything else besides this. The gameplay is fine, for the time no one is playing it. I Bhop around the map and do nothing. This game is not worth the money.

this game is really fun it was like quake multiplayer and i found a lobby with players in it at first, but when i left and came back i douldnt find any lobbies with people in them on a sunday afternoon, so its a fun game but hard to find players. valve needs to make it free so people will play it.

The game is Valve's tribute to Quake. The gameplay is similar to Quake with all the same weapons and pickups except for the Half-Life's trademark crowbar as a melee weapon. The game is very fun to play and you can get into it pretty easily. Learning some of the most advanced techniques mimicked from Quake such as bunnyhopping can be tough to learn but other than that the game is not hard at all to play. However, the game doesn't really have that many active players and you won't have the same kind of fun playing it as Valve's other titles. On the whole, the game is fun but gets repetitive later on.

It's a weird and unique experience, but don't play it. If you want to play deathmatch, play either Opposing Force or Half-Life 2, They're much better than this. 2/10

A pretty decent game. Despite the numerous hitreg issues and the really imbalanced weapons, it's a pretty fun game to kick back with your friends. If this became F2P, I can guarantee you it would have an active playerbase. Right now it's just barren.

chaos, as a deathmatch should be. beside the spawnkilling, this combination of quake 1 and half life feels somewhat pleasing and nice. Still 10x better than the source port. 6/10

This game reminds me of when I used to play computer games at school on LAN when we were supposed to be reading fairy tales or looking at pictures of plants. The teacher couldn't tell we were playing half-life LOL. anyways this game is awesome because you can frag people and KILL Barney over and over and over again something I couldn't do with my father watching over my shoulder in my childhood. This game is violent and has an epic rocket launcher. I think this game was inspired by a game called Quake, seems pretty obscure and unknown but I might try it out some time. There's also this guy who has an inappropriate name who is bully me on the internet!!!! I hate him I blocked him, LOSER!!

A fun experience...?

I know other people have a much more detailed review of the game and I shouldn't really get a say on this since I played it for 30 minutes, but I think I can say what I think about the game.

Half-Life: Deathmatch Classic, or just Half-Life: Deathmatch in the old days, was released with the original Half-Life. It's a pretty fun experience with mostly weapons that'll remind you of something like Doom. I don't really have much to say about HLDMC, it's fun and you should totally try playing it with friends.

Listen if you ever are in school and idk the teacher wants you to study for 20 mins in class or whatever then just play this as a little break since this is game loads fast and it takes 30 seconds to load into a server, and there are plenty of servers with bots so you don't have to wait for a server with 1 person in it. Also you can even plan when to get on steam and play this with your friends! Like, if you are ready to leave to go somewhere and you have 5-10 mins left, just load this game and join a server real quick. You won't regret it!

This is effectively a translation of the original Quake 1 deathmatch gameplay in the Half-Life engine. It's actually really, really good and plays just as well, and in some ways better, than the pre-Quake 3 deathmatches. More content was planned for this game, including a translation of the ThreeWave CTF gameplay, but it never got finished/shipped.

If you can find players, this is a phenomenal little game and one of Valve's underrated classics. Again, it is literally Quake 1 with new maps and a fresh coat of paint - but what's wrong with that?

Don’t get me wrong, this game is quite fun and even at its price point at around a dollar on sales (admit it, you get this via valve pack) and maybe worth a buy but don’t expect much. It doesn’t have an active player base as it once was and you’ll likely be going against bots.

Everything you want!

It is absolutely not a bad game . It has simple gameplay mechanics and maps . Easy to learn , hard to master :D Deathmatch Classic might look like a Quake rip-off , but it is just good and still fun , but the biggest and the only problem with this game is that it is just basically almost totally DEAD ... almost literally nobody plays this game and it was really hard to find server with good ping for me ( I am from EU ) and have fun with anyone . But , if you have at least one friend to 1v1 you in this game , I highly recommend it :)

This is literally Quake's Multiplayer in Half-Life (both game have a similar engine). And it's a pretty solid Arena shooter.

Sadly nobody is even playing there...

If only Valve would make it free.

I played this game with a friend for literally 14 minutes and stopped playing right after that because it strained my eyes, gave me a headache and caused my eyes to tear up as well.

Another Valve multiplayer game that's completely dead. No story here so we're jumping straight into graphics.

Graphics:

Since this is running of the same engine as the first Half Life game, it's no surprise that this game is dated in the art department. There's nothing really that special about it and most textures (apart from guns) seemed to be ripped out from Half Life.

Audio:

The audio design is decent, but overall nothing special. The guns sound meaty and the explosions have the same nice sound like in Half Life, albeit a little distorted. Overall nothing too note worthy.

Gameplay:

Deathmatch Classic is Valve's throwback to Id Software's arena shooters like Quake. It's honestly a decent game, but sadly like most other Valve classic multiplayer games, it's absolutely dead. Unlike most of their other games I managed to play a match, but this was on a server that had insane ping, making it basically unplayable.

My shots would go straight through people, so I couldn't kill anyone and after sometime I just quit out. Other servers were completely empty and I couldn't get any matches going.

Verdict:

This one seems like a decent game, but sadly it's completely dead so I cannot recommend this one, when games like Quake still have players kicking around in their servers. So skip this one.

+ Guns have meaty sounds

Cons:
- Game is completely dead and some servers have too high of a ping

Scuffed Half Life 1 Multiplayer

Firstly, This game is essentially dead, there are a total of 16 servers online with no players in them all of which range between 300-500 ping which tells me they are all EU/US Servers.

There are a small number of official maps, 6 or so and no official way to play against bots. From what I've seen there are mods you can download to play against bots but the next part completely turned me off even bothering going through the effort to even install these mods which don't even seem all that reliable based on what I've read online with people having problems getting them to spawn in.

The nail in the coffin for this game is that it looks and plays like Half Life 1 but for some reason turning with the mouse causes the camera to flick back constantly making it pretty much impossible to play with the mouse....
However using the arrow keys to look around is smooth which is more similar to the original DOOM/Quake era which also makes sense because the gun is positioned in the center of the screen.

It's almost impossible to find a server with people in it. The controls feel so clunky after years of not playing...I'm not sure how I tolerated it before. With that being said, it's a classic and cheap...so why not own it?

This is a great game, The Quake Maps are very good and well translated into a slightly more modern era. The only problem and the reason I wouldn't recommend it is the exact same reason that I don't recommend games like Team Fortress Classic, The Community. These sorts of games are nearly, or more than 15 years old, They won't have thriving communities to deathmatch with. A Dead game, But a good game.

Fun game. It plays and feels like quake. It's especially more fun with more players, although a one on one match is also fun and intense, especially when you are playing against someone who is better than you. My main complaint is that not many people play this game, and that's really all I have to complain about. You know that it is a good game when the only complaint is that not enough people play on it.
