THE GOOD:
The Gameplay:
As generic as it sounds, the overall gameplay loop is still just as refreshing as ever. Even nearly 20 years later the game can feel just as fun to play as it did when it came out. Though while you are limited to a very specific amount of guns (as I'll specify below) it doesn't detract as much from the general feel of the game.
The custom content:
With the age of any game comes the hope that talented fans will come along and provide extra player-made content for a game, and with Day of Defeat this is especially so. There are TONS of additional maps that you can experience. It's absolutely a plus that the game exists in the Goldsrc engine as there's an ample amount of people that are eager to provide fresh content that everyone can enjoy.
The Aesthetic:
This is more for people who yearn for an older day. While yes, my playtime with this game is far more recent than a load of others that still play this game today (I've put in only ~6 hours as of this review) this game still provides a relatively calming and nostalgic aesthetic thanks to its age and its overall feel, something I would prefer over its more modern (and more popular) counterpart, Counter-Strike.
The Communities:
While this shares a lot with the above, it's also really nice to encounter really friendly and welcoming people to be able to enjoy the game with. As big and expansive as communities for most Goldsrc games can be, it's nice to find that a lot of people that play Day of Defeat tend to be on the nicer side, making my time in Day of Defeat a lot more enjoyable. Each time I hop on, I look forward to playing with the people I've gotten to know!
THE BAD:
The Weapon Selection:
In Day of Defeat you're forced to choose one out of several classes, which is fairly typical, but instead of getting a choice of loadout you're stuck with preset weapons on either side. A rifleman is typically stuck with his respective semi-auto rifle, a Master Sergeant is stuck with his respective SMG, and so on. While it's fine being able to pick between classes, it's easy to see that the choice between weapons in general is rather poor.
The Age:
The biggest problem that this game faces is that, quite obviously, it's almost 2 decades old. As good as it is, you'll have to get used to the content as-is, because there's absolutely no chance of Valve coming back to add more content. While you'll still be able to get more than enough player-made content, it's possible you'll never see a proper game update for Day of Defeat again.
THE CONCLUSION:
While it's very apparent that this game is aged and near-forgotten, the communities that still exist in the game keep it very much alive. While it isn't as thriving as most games in this age, for the price it is it's certainly worth the trip back in time to enjoy some classic 2000s shenanigans.

It's debatable how much of an influence DOD had on Call of Duty. Parts of COD's online game loop were inspired perhaps by DOD, but to be sure, also by IW's experience in working on MOHAA as 2015. Still, if you ask me, it's no coincidence that after Activision published DOD for Valve, only to then see the nascent publishing agreement DOA, they had already gone to Infinity Ward and desperately persuaded them to make a WW2 game, instead of their modern warfare game - Activision's sunken Valve plans led to the creation of COD. In the end, COD4 would ironically steal much more from CS' low TTK, high-action arcade-meets-realism gameplay.
As I said above, DOD is still more widely played today than its failed successors. Some swear by DOD:S, others prefer DOD 1.3 which wer have here - for me, the original will always be closest to my heart. An online classic!

What is basically a ww2 based multiplayer game in Gold Source, with 2 very different sides as I will go into detail here in a minute. The Allies and the Axis (America vs Germany, and sometimes British) are the 2 main factions in the game, I'll say this much as the Allies tend to have the better handling and easier to aim with weapons though tend to not put out as much damage as a con, while the Axis have the heavier hitting weapons though have less handling. The British being a mix between the 2, though with less weapons to choose from. Most maps focus around a control point type game style, capturing points and gaining more ground on the enemy.
Those are the basics for Day of Defeat have fun and see you on the battlefield!

But even the source version was pretty gud.
I honestly think both of them were amazing.
And both games deserve my positive review.
They didn't pop off as much as the CS stuff.
But they do have their own unique fan base.
The World War II setting is done quite nicely.
It might feel a bit out of date nowadays, tho.
Newcomers probably won't enjoy it as much.
It's mostly in here just for the nostalgia sake.
And that's fine, It's a neat look into the past.
Both of the Day Of Defeat games are alright.
There's still quite a lot of active players here.
And I just have to give them my thumbs up.
Even though: I haven't played them in ages.

The graphics are kind of bland, but they do a good job making them look somewhat like the envirmoents look like. There are tons of places to go and take cover and just like in counter strike after you play for a while you really get a hang of it. I will admit though, one thing that I did not like was that you really couldnt look down the sights of any weapon other than the sniper rifle that is about it though, well the British weapons suck, but this is a very fun multiplayer game that is free via steam and a must play if you like World War Two shooters or Counter Strike.
- Story :
There isnt really that much of a story here but the missions are fun and objective based even though this is a complete multiplayer experience. Graphics: They are pretty bland for today's standards, but they had to have blown people away when it first came out. Controls: This game has good controls, if you have played Counter Strike than you know how everything works in this game. Sound:Bullets and your teamates screams, and they sound good.

It's essentially the WW2 version of CounterStrike, but I always preferred DoD to CS.
It's still active, and still a blast to play.
Extremely low system specs required is a plus.
Easy to learn, hard to master.

my personal favorite encounters include:
A drunken scottish man
A forty year old man who kept making sex jokes
A welsh kid who kept saying incomprehensible gibberish
An entire group of people that were using a bunch of millitary slang
A literal fcking toddler

Johannson was in the lead, Garand at the ready and bayonet fixed improperly. Rook was shadowing him, double checking each spot that Johannson had checked before. I was in the middle with Peters and his trusty sniper rifle, carrying the M2 Browning. And Stewart was in the rear, covering our backs with his Thompson at the ready.
The others had been glancing uncertainly at the MG I held in my hands, but I quickly dismissed the growing fear as they were undoubtly only nervous about a rookie with such a powerful weapon.
It was quiet. Too quiet.
The bridge we had set out to capture was undefended, and we quickly set up a defensive position in case a German patrol stumbled upon us.
The sound started as a low rumble. We looked around, at each other, confused as to why the ground was shaking. It got louder, and we could soon hear the sound of people yelling. We readied our weapons, getting ready for the enemy to throw a grenade or fire a Panzerschreck.
But nothing could prepare us for what happened next.
A giant tide of German soldiers, all carrying trench shovels and primed Steilhandgranates in their hands, came around the corner, rushing at us screaming at the top of their lungs.
We opened fire, but there were too many and we were quickly overrun.
Stewart was the first to go, having gotten overzealous with his Thompson. He had managed to push the wave of Germans back, when they surrounded him and began pummeling him to death with their shovels.
One of them, holding a grenade, charged Rook and Johannson from behind. They never saw it coming.
By now, it was only me and Peters, him firing his sniper rifle with reckless abandon. Running out of ammo, Peters quickly pulled out his M1911 and managed to squeeze off a few shots, but it wasn't long before he too was buried under the mass of grey and black.
I was cornered, MG propped up against an overturned cart while I mowed down soldier after soldier, spent casings flying everywhere. From out of nowhere, a fist collided with my face and I blacked out.
Waking up, I found I was tied down to a chair in a pitch black room. The only thing visible was a glowing box directly in front of me with words written on it. Squinting my eyes, I barely made out the small, black letters.
The box read:
Kicked from server. Reason: lol dont use MG skrub
