Schlechtestes Spiel was ich jemals gespielt habe.

Doch nun konkret:

Was ist gut?

Was ist schlecht?

There's just a certain vibe to this game, man. You know?

Darksiders II is a third person action game with some RPG elements, and I shall struggle to contain my hyperbolic, overly positive feelings about it for the purposes of this review. I can already feel I'm about to fail in this.

I don't even know how to explain it, other than controlling Death just feels right in a way that not many games nail down with such finesse, but this fluid movement is only one of the many great things about it. For what it's worth, I tried and failed to enjoy the first game in the franchise several times.

Featuring fantastic combat that finds the balance between what I'd call overcomplicated Devil May Cry style and a more Western influenced and straighforward character action game, the greatest strength of DS2 remains the world they've built for you to explore and just gawk at.
Not many games make you wanna stop for a little while, take in the scenery, music, and the overall ambiance.
While not technically an open world, it feels expansive. Exploration is almost always rewarded, and thanks to the wonderful movement set traversing it is a joy. They've even thought of small things, such as summoning or banishing your mount doesn't break the flow of your movement. And those chest opening animations? mmm *chefs kiss*

The lore, story and characters, the character design, the overall visual direction, the level design, the music and voice acting are absolutely top notch. Gosh. For me personally, they've got the mixture of combat and exploration / environmental puzzles just right.

Literally the only single viable complaint I have about Darksiders II is the shitty FOV, however this is reasonably simple, if annoying, to fix with a third party app called cheat engine. There's guides on steam for this.

Playing this questionably named Deathinitive Edition of the title is my third time through the game, and I cannot really say that I noticed any differences just going from my memory. This is one of those times that really make me question if a new edition was needed at all.
To to game's utter credit, the fact that I made it through 3 times is a testament to its quality. This is a practice reserved for the holiest of holies, my most beloved games, and there's not many I ever want to do multiple playthroughs of.

Darksiders 2 is one of these games, and you should totally give it a chance.

“Despite rumor, Death isn't cruel – merely terribly, terribly good at his job.”
~Sir Terry Pratchett

Guess, I won't surprise anyone if I'll say that the original Darksiders was a big hit. Even despite the fact that it was made of stolen ideas and design. Let's just admit it – there was nothing original about it. The guys from Vigil Games just took The Legend of Zelda, added melee combat from the original God of War and guns from Devil May Cry, then covered it all in BLIZZARD-like design and called it a day. Sounds terrible, but like I said, it worked. Darksiders was a surprisingly good product. Nicely made, very satisfying and with a very impressive presentation. It was pretty much everything you may ever want from an action adventure title. And as the result, it was really easy to ignore the fact that the game wasn't original at all. Press loved it, the actual audience loved it... Naturally, the sequel was inevitable. So... here it is. A sequel. And it only took Vigil two years to make it.

Which alone deserves a lot of praise. I mean, we all know that making games is not nearly as simple as it used to be back in the days, while Darksiders II? Like its predecessor, it's a surprisingly impressive product. It looks good, it's pretty long (even if you won't aim for completion, the game would take you about 20 hours to finish) and the presentation is very spectacular. Heck, even though Mark Hamill isn't here anymore, even the voice cast is pretty impressive. We've got James Cosmo (Campbell in Braveheart movie), we've got Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (English voice of Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell franchise) and we even got Simon Templeman, whose voice made the original Legacy of Kain game very special (Vae victis!), In other words – the guys from Vigil are efficient as heck. They're, like, the exact opposite of Chris Roberts with his Cloud Imperium. And it's a great thing. It's a great thing for us, players, since we've got a sequel fast, it's a great thing for a publisher, etc. But what's about the actual game, though? Is it good?

Well, in a way, it's even better than the original. Despite all the good things, the original Darksiders still had a couple of rough edges during the late parts of the game. I can't say those parts were bad, but let's just say there were some level design flaws that felt pretty... annoying. In D II, on the other hand? There's nothing like it. The entire thing is surprisingly smooth. Which is a great thing. It can be a bad thing too, though. I mean, in a way, D II is too smooth. When it's about this kind of games, imperfection can be... a part of the charm. Remember good ol' Ocarina of Time? Remember how we used to get into that Water Temple thingy and being like “Now, wait just a minute...”. When it's about this kind of games, being stuck from time to time is a good thing. I mean, that's exactly the point, right? Puzzles in such games exist to make you think now and then. While D II...

Don't get me wrong, the puzzles are there, there's quite a lot of them and some of them are surprisingly smart. The problem is – they're all... How should I put it? Way too intuitive. You'll feel good while solving puzzles here, but as long as D II won't be your very first video game ever, you'll never stuck here. Not even for a minute. Every single puzzle here you'll probably solve automatically. And with a pretty straightforward level design, it creates a very unpleasant aftertaste. At least for people like yours truly who never liked linear levels. Because comparing D II with the old-school Zelda is like comparing Serious Sam with Duke Nukem 3D. Both can be fun, but... you know. D II is just way too straightforward. Up to the point where it can feel boring for Zelda fans. Looking for secrets will sure help with that, but still.

There's another problem with level design too. I'm talking about lack of variety. Even though D II has a nice selection of tools (again, all of them were taken directly from other games, like VALVE's Portal, for example), playing it still feels like... doing the same exact thing over and over again. The game fails to make every dungeon to be unique, while overworld is still empty and useless. Exactly like it was in OoT back in 1998. Again, it doesn't ruin the game, but... mixed with everything I've said above, it kinda gives it a chore aftertaste.

Talking about copy / pasted content, by the way. I've already mentioned the fact that this game copied Portal Gun, but since the original Darksiders was all about such things, let's... just say you shouldn't be surprised about this game being all about stolen ideas. Because yes, D II keeps doing exactly that – copying popular ideas from other people's games. For example, one of the juiciest features now is so-called Soul Splitter. Which... is pretty much Elegy of Emptiness from Majora's Mask. Again, the game does all those copied ideas justice and all of them feel really fun and satisfying, but... yes, Vigil didn't even try being original here. Like in previous game, they just took a lot of good things from other games, mixed them together and called it a day. Without even trying to add a personal touch. Even visual directing is all about such an approach. Remember how War (our playable character in the original game) used to both look and act like Arthas Menethil from WarCraft? Well, our new hero is Death and... he both looks and acts like Raziel from Soul Reaver series. Good grief, y'all...

Like the original Darksiders, Darksiders II is a good product. Very good, I must say. If you still didn't play it and wonder if you should give it a chance? Do it. It's totally worth your time and it'll provide you with a lot of fun. It's a really satisfying experience. Then again, tons of stolen ideas mixed with lack of personal touch give it a strong aftertaste. An aftertaste of being... I dunno, soulless? That's just the thing about D II – it's a very good product. That certain something that makes you fall in love with video games for real? Like, you know. Buying collectibles, putting posters on your walls and stuff like that? It still isn't here. So, don't expect that. Gameplay-wise, though? Like I said, D II is even better than the original. It's smooth, it's satisfying and, well, it's fun. Therefore, there's no way for me to give it a thumb down.

Finally, a couple of words about this exact version. What we have here is a basic remaster with all DLCs included. Which sounds boring, but... let's just say that there's more about it than meets the eye (Transformers G1 theme is playing on background). On the surface, there are revamped lighting and textures, which make the game to look less bright and more... I dunno, natural. Hardcore fans would probably complain that it makes the game to look a little bit different, but all in all, the difference isn't that big and personally, I'd say it's a good change. What's really important, though, is the fact that this version comes with two very important fixes. First – the game was seriously rebalanced and obvious gear problems were fixed. And second (most importantly) – the dodge rolls mechanics that were half-broken in the original, were fixed. Not only those will work properly now (without enemy attacks following you), side rolls also got bigger range. Sure, it makes the game a bit easier to play, but let's be honest – everybody complained about those things in the original version. So... yeah. I totally recommend choosing this one over it. Dixi.

This game is conflicting for me. When the game works, it is pretty great. The combat, the plot the character design all great and cohesive with what you have come to love from this franchise.

When the game doesn't work, it is a mess. The game doesn't work very often. Sadly at this point it doesn't seem like the issues will be fixed. Buy at your own risk.

Theres a bug i can't seem to fix and i've tried everything. I really want to love this game but everytime I pause the game (to switch armour, look at the map etc) it freezes, then i have to restart.

If it works for you then great, I loved what I played of it. But i can't recommend a faulty game for which I can't fix and is never going to be fixed because of its age.

Cmon, you play as Death. You need any more reasons to play this game? XD
This easily my favorite game in the Darksiders franchise. Although I do prefer the way the story is told in Darksiders 1, this game does everything else better in my opinion. Death is a badass character, he is more agile than War, the combat is amazing, and of course. his personality (and voice) is really awesome and a joy to see. The maps are huge and very diverse, dungeons are really fun and there´s lots of side missions that will keep completionists like me very busy. The RPG elements also allow you to choose to some extent your prefered style with the many stats the game has to offer.
Definitely play this game if you haven't already. Overall an awesome experience gameplay and storywise.

More like DS1, but tries to add too many mechanics from different genres and ends up a bloated pile of meh. Good puzzles and decent pacing of story, combat and puzzles(apart from the second hub area which was really boring). Combat is basic but due to the camera(and the fact that enemies can attack from off screen) half of the time you aren't even at fault when getting hit. Would call it something between good and mediocre(mainly due to it being a slog at times).

My scores for this game
Story : 7/10
From one part onwards, I lose the story of the game and go to the side missions, and the story is not understandable to me, and I must say that the story of the game is related to the previous version, and here we are the brother of the character of the first version.
The reason for the deficit of points is the confusion of the story.
Graphics : 10/10
The graphics of the game have been updated and have been very excellent. When playing some vegetation and the surface of the ground and the structures of the game, I did not see any graphic defects.
Musics : 7/10
The music of the game was good. The only reason I deducted the score was that sometimes the music was interfering and I had to cut it off sometimes.
Details : 9/10
In many places, I paid attention to the details of the textures of the structures and the surface of the ground, and some heroes. I did not see any flaws or violations, except for one point. It was neither on the controller nor on the keyboard: /
Game play : 10/10
It has its own gameplay, the previous version has been updated, and it has a lot of fans, and it has a lot of weapons. I personally used all the available weapons, and there were many puzzles and challenges, a perfect score.
Variety : 10/10
The variety of stages was great, there were even beautiful dlcs on the game that I could not experience in the section.
Characterization : 8/10
There are many characters, but some of the game characters seem to be from world warcraft :(
Optimization : 2/10
Frame drop was not a problem for me, but it crashed a lot, I had to restart the system.
Bugs : I saw a bug in the game. The girl I had to talk to disappeared to continue the game.
Note : The game was crashing.
Description : In general, the game is good, I really enjoyed the story and gameplay of the game, but after clearing the crash, I deleted it after the end of the story part of the game, and in one part of the game, it does not move forward and crashes, so you can move forward with the help of this guide .
My guild : for fix crash https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2626950146
Overall score :5,8 /10
I recommend, you can give it a chance.

Neat mid-sized Zelda-like game. Not drastically different from the first but small improvements across the board. Good world/character design with a suitably chunky and macabre art style. V good sound design if slightly forgettable music. Puzzles are cleverly implemented with few moments to get stuck and neat rewards for exploration. Combat is appropriately visceral, a tad repetitive and the camera often works against you.

Great graphics, art, voice acting, animation and music, the music in particular really surprised me on how epic and memorable it was. God of War style combat and 3D Zelda style dungeons, exploration and puzzles.
The game really comes into it's own in the second half which was a great feeling because I was really enjoying the first half of the game as it was.
I recommend to anyone that enjoys action games. A tip I have, though, because there are some technical issues with the game, is to run the games .exe in administrator mode, make sure vsync is on and have the shadows one notch down from the max and the game will run like butter.

I didn't play any of the Darksiders games on console so all of the time I've spent with them is years after they released, on PC. The first game was a new and exciting with plenty of fun bosses, weapon combos, places to go and see, a great story, and one of my favorite voice actors in the industry.

Darksiders 2 does plenty of new things and almost all of them are for the better. The things I thought were better than in the first game were...
  • Better graphics all around
  • A larger world with more dungeons and places to find a larger variety of collectibles
  • New weapon and damage types for better setting apart different enemy encounters with new combos and elemental weakness to consider
  • New abilities and powers for you to build into with new stats that make very different feeling builds
  • Plenty of new and creative puzzles to figure out with a new set of tools that can be used in combat as well
  • A solid story that directly follows the consequences of Wars actions from the end of the first game
  • A new area in each region that functions as a wave combat loot farming zone for when your loot gets a bit weak or stale
  • The protagonists drive to keep going is much more reasonable and understandable considering everything he does is to bring back humanity and save his brother

Now for the short list of things that felt like either a waste of time or needed more work to feel like a good addition to the game...
  • The game punishes you for using the far end of the difficulty slider before playing NG+. Having a full tool kit and solid build is the only way for most encounters to feel reasonable on the highest difficulty so if you want to play through the game like that, expect to be instantly killed often or left so low that any fight that drags on is almost not worth trying unless you have a build that lets you heal to full health very fast. I understand that playing on the highest difficulty means its going to be hard but I want it to be because my skill set needs improvement, not a stat sheet from Morrowind.
  • The boss encounters can sometimes feel like a strange imitation of a Dark Souls boss with the way that they move and attack. This wouldn't be a problem if the lock on camera was more understanding and you didn't have to constantly hold the button to stay locked onto the ONE enemy in the room. You'll find yourself learning attack patterns and finding moments to get in some damage but all of that takes a back seat to fighting the camera when you get pressed near a wall.
  • The items and stats that they come with feel far too limiting with how rarely you get items that really fit your build. There are sets of legendary armor and weapons that drop at specific points in the game that often overshadow all of your other gear so any time you spend equipping a set of items to better suit your preferred play style will almost always be totally useless as soon as you get armor or a weapon that does something else but far better than anything you had. I was playing on the hardest difficulty which tells you that you will get more loot and higher quality loot more often but in retrospect that didn't matter as all of my cool purple items that helped me do more damage with summoned ghouls were garbage in comparison to the set that I just found that makes melee WAY stronger that anything I could build for.

The size of the negatives might lead you to believe that I didn't enjoy the game but they felt like a weak point in an overall very solid sequel. Most of the criticisms I had while playing seemed like symptoms of the dev team trying new things that caused some less than smooth interactions with the existing formula of the game. I would still highly recommend playing through all of the Darksiders games and 2 was definitely a good step up in concept and execution.

i played this game on the xbox so i was excited to play it again. however between a problem of the game freezing when leaving the equipment screen and an issue with death's ability to climb demon growth on walls and ceilings the game is more or less a loss. until these issues are addressed i wont recommend this version to anyone.

If you really love the Darksiders series, then you will play the game even if it has many issues. There are a LOT of things that has to be fixed in this game. The game freezes up and shows a white screen when leaving the inventory menu, the Archon quest is broken which freezes the game after the cutscene, most of the audio is gone in certain parts of the game, etc. Again, if you really want to follow the story of the Horsemen, purchase and buy the game at your own risk.

I am having issues with the Archon cutscene that consistantly and with out fail crashes the game. I have googled this issue and have found continues call backs to this issue from as far back as 2015. I should not as a customer have to go all the way this far back to fix the issue. Should this problem be resolved I will change my review but given that I physically cannot complete the game I would recommend a pass.

This game is bad, I have to force myself to finish this after quitting halfway on the first time with a new save on hardest difficulty which in my opinion not making the game harder at all. The game has nothing to do with RPGs when the only best skill you can get is the Crows Summoning which is super overpowered. Looting weapons is also useless after you obtain a weapon that gives you life steal(it’s the only good weapon in the game). Most enemies are damage sponges until the final levels when they decide to have a guy that blocks your attack, even more spongy and weird attack animations so you won’t be able to react. Most of the time I just try to out heal enemies in combat with items and skills. Darksider 2 is actually a very good puzzle game, every puzzle seems very creative and mentally rewarding even though most of the levels are played in a very same way(you completed a set of puzzles then a boss fight at the end) still doesn't make it boring to do. The way this game controls is horrendous omg my fingers hurt when I play this game. Why do you have to hold a button to lock into an enemy and also have to move the stick to switch targets? And I felt like sometimes you pressed too many buttons at a time the game just did not register them… I would not recommend this game for someone who is looking for a RPG game to play.

Pretty quick review. I like all three of the main darksiders games. I like them a lot! Though they do differ in gameplay somewhat i strongly recommend all 3, especially if on sale and or you liked one of them. I played them in the order 1,3,2.
The atmosphere of the level design and graphical art is really great. I am not a fan of button mashing combat games, which this one allows for sure. Regardless, still love the game. The difficulty of the game is more manageable vs say the dark souls type games which i love.. However unlike the surge 2 which i love and am also enjoying, i'm not lost all the time and need a guide to figure things out.. So this is a nice break from a completely unguided souls type game.. Not everyone has that much time or a great memory..
Graphics still hold up in 2021 if you aren't super picky. Music really compliments the game. Surround sound is really nice when i play on my tv.
To sum it up, this is the kind of game where you will immerse yourself so much in the levels that you may reminisce occasionally for years. Hopping back in now so end of review.

It's a great game and I would recommend it if it didn't crash constantly and contain gamebreaking bugs years after launch.
-Crucible crashed on wave 7 and wave 9, basically rendering it unplayable
-Bloodless quest state is broken and can't turn in
-Can't move properly on scalable walls/vines
-Random menu crashes

While I liked the original Darksiders II, this version is just a bug-riddled mess.

If they fixed it, I'd recommend it, but seeing as it's years since release and it's still bugged to hell, they won't.

Every time I'd leave a menu, I'd get stuck on a white foggy screen and never get to return to the game proper.

I tried all the fixes I could Google, didn't work. So game is literally unplayable for me.

So don't buy this piece of broken abandonware.

Bad game design desicions and lack of focus

Recently I replayed darksiders 1 on apocalyptic difficulty and had a lot of fun. That game was good. A lot of action. interesting puzzles, interesting bosses, and quite refreshing experience.

Darksiders 2 isn't as good. It tries to be bigger and longer in a couple of lazy ways.

The first one is the loot system. The plague of modern smoothbrain openworld design. It adds nothing to the game, just stretches the playtime by forcing the player to waste time in the inventory constantly swapping items with miniscule incremental stat improvements.
That's why exploring sucks. There are no unique items around, only the same weapons with random stats. If I break boxes, I do it only for chance to get healing potions. This is a hobo simulator in a nutshell.
Meanwhile, Darksiders 1 had equipable enhancements, and you wanted to get them. They were useful.

The second bad desicion is trying to make the game bigger without making filler areas any good. These are empty linear huge corridors, with very scarce roadside climbing puzzles and some mobs scattered around. These areas look like they have been copypasted from some MMORPG. But if a ride through one such area is not enough, you can ride through two or three of them in a row, just to get to the next important place. These empty areas shouldn't exist. THe game world might be much smaller, yet it would be much better just because of that.

The first time I played darksiders 2 few years ago, I was really mad at developers. Now I feel slight annoyance. I don't want to play this game ever again. I feel guilty for wasting electricity and internet bandwith on downloading the game.

I'am a huge fan of the first Darksiders, I played the original as well as the warmastered edition
and I just wanted more of the same.

First of all, it's not that bad, but in addition to some bad design choices there is one major issue which ruined the whole experience for me!
There is NO OPTION to adjust the FIELD OF VIEW (FOV) and the default setting is way to narrow
so you can't see as much as you should, which turns combat and jumping sections into a nightmare!
and after all this time they never fixed it.
Well to be honest, apparently there is a solution, but I am not going to install some questionable third-party
Cheat-software!

There're also some bugs which causes the game to crash or to stutter instead of moving while you re climbing, but after looking up some fixes you can easily fix that yourself.
-NEVER max out shadows in the graphic settings
-adjust screen resolution to your screen
-enable V-sync
at least it worked for me.

With Darksiders 2 they also introduced a new loot-system like in a hack 'n' slay game which I didn't enjoy at all.
It doesn't fits the atmosphere, and there're way to much generic chests with uninteresting generic loot.
On top of that, you're now able to see nearly every single chest on your map right from the start, which turns exploration
into a boring fetch-the-next-symbol-on-your-map thing.

Before I say some good things about the game, here are some minor negative points:

-you pay with gold instead of souls (doesn't fits the atmosphere)
-your raven always shows you where to go next and where you'll find the next solution for a puzzle
(I want to discover things by myself)
-the first area in the game (10 - 20 hours) is extremly boring and lacks completly the apocalyptic atmosphere (but it gets
better after that!)
-some minor bugs and glichtes but they never happened often.

What I enjoyed:

-combat feels more fluid now but the narrow FOV spoils it.
-some new and cool special abilitys
-a skill-tree where you can chose what to unlock
-new and fun jumping sections but again the narrow FOV spoils the experience.

So as I sad it's not a real bad game and if you are okay with the fact to install some cheat-software in order to fix the FOV
you might enjoy it.

I've been a die hard Darksiders fan since its release and it gave me that Zelda Ocarina of Time feel. The most helpful advice I can give about this game right after playing Darksiders Warmastered Edition is JUST PLAY DARKSIDERS II. I am lucky enough to have a copy of it on steam as it seems you can no longer get the original version and side by side the graphics are almost identical and no where near worth the headache of the bugs in this Deathinitive Edition. Even running Public beta fix it still does not work. DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION you will not be happy.

This Zelda game is much more forgiving than the first one in terms of puzzles. It has some cool Diablo style atmosphere paired with loot system not introduced in Darksiders 1. Combat is flavored with some hack and slash dmc vibes. Story is trash and forgettable but thankfully saved by some bad ass moments, voice acting by the main character..

Overall a 7/10 rating for me.

TL;DR: Changing equipment in game causes game to lock up.

I bought and played this game for six a hours back in 2016 and had a blast. I recently built a new gaming PC and figured i'd give this game another run, and dear lord, I'm not sure what they did, but it doesn't work anymore. The game seems to run just find, but when you change your equipment, in particular your gauntlets or boots, and then attempt to exit the equipment menu, the game just displays a smokey white screen and locks up. You have to kill the program in order to exit. This has happened now on both my desktop as well as my laptop, as well as on a fresh install. Unfortunately it seems if you change your equipment, the game breaks.

Very disappointing, unless this bug can be fixed, DO NOT BUY IT, as it does not work anymore.

Darksiders is one of those series that's definitely a labor of love that didn't get a lot of attention.

I had never finished the original non-hd version, so decided to replay this.
Controls still suck unbelievably much. My god. Evading is such a pain in the ass as the camera is constantly moving around, changing your evasion angle. And focussing/tracking an enemy always picks the wrong one and doesn't cycle between them.
The combat mechanics did not age well, esp around bosses. stupid combat puzzles.

Pros:
You can choose to continue to explore after finishing the main story.

Neutral:
-Just like the first game, there are some areas that you cannot explore until you have unlocked some story-related abilities later on, so there are a lot of backtracking for collectibles.

Cons:
-Some keybindings are locked and cannot be changed.
-Most cutscenes have a 'skip' prompt on screen and you can not hide it.
-Sometimes the lantern puzzles are not working properly.
-Vsync is disabled when you launch the game for the first time.
-Low FOV and you can not change in the options.
-The game is not optimized for high refresh rate, if your monitor is not running at 60Hz you might see some bugs like 'stuck at menu', 'stuck at conversation', 'barley climbing', etc.

I hope I did not pay a lot for this.

Pros:
+ The stylized graphics are nice

Cons:
- Camera moves unbearably slowly
- Platforming is unbearably poor

I could not bear more than 35 minutes of this. I would recommend going with Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning. The graphics are not as nice but the combat is fun and not hampered by a sluggish camera. It does not have platforming but in this case it is a plus.

I usually dont do this but i honestly dont understand why people rate this game so highly , especially compared to the earlier game in the series. Every single 'added' feature of the sequel somehow detracts what actually made Darksiders 1 great.

For the purpose of the review i will assume you are familiar with the gameplay of Darksiders 1 (else start there, its a great Zelda-like game that doesnt hold your hand and difficulity/combat system akin to Dmc/bayonetta/ninja gaiden).

Darksiders 2 has major 'changes' over 1. they somehow manage to all make the core loop (exploring dungeons, getting cool new powers and fighting monsters with them) less fun and interesting. Honestly incredible how if you would hide the titles Darksiders 1 would look like the more streamlined and better version of 2.

1) THE WORLD BUILDING

First of all there is the structure of the world itself. The game is very rushed and chapter 1 and 2 each take as long as chapter 3 and 4 combined , this gives a very unsatisfying payoff to an rpg game as the ending comes very abrubtly right when you acquired all your toys to play with. Furthermore earlier worlds/dungeons tend to hold your hand more and have much easier enemies and puzzles meaning the pacing just feels completely off.
Secondly compared to 1 not only is the actual overworld incredibly dumbed down (no more interesting puzzles navigating it) with every 'world' being about 4 zones with 2 paths in it (1 leading to the dungeon, the other to the next zone) , they also decided to add the ability to fast travel (even inside dungeons ) and to have treasure chests be marked on your minimap as soon as you are remotely near them. There is no sense of exploration and even if you do its incredibly obvious where the game 'wants' you to look.
Lastly there is the theme of the worlds themselves. Chapter 1 and 2 take place in an incredibly generic fantasy setting, while nicely done it doesnt really feel like places you expect to visit in a game that wants to portray itself as 'dark' and 'post apocalyptic'. You can replace Death with a generic Hero character from any RPG game and get the exact same tone. This gets a lot better as the game progresses but due to the horrible pacing this means 50% of your time is spend interacting with a world that is at best uninspiring and at worse a ripoff of every rpg ever (ofcourse generic viking land has generic giant forge dungeon!). The game even , almost mockingly, lampshades this as the entire reason of Death being there is a teleporter incident on his way to the cool plot-relevant ones.

2) THE GEAR SYSTEM

The big selling point of Darksiders 2 is that monsters drop gear with various stats and appearances , thus depending on your drops and your playstyle you customize Death and get a sense of achievment from finding new upgrades. In reality however balance is godawful and you have the choice between 3 shotting everything by stacking crit or gimping yourself by equipping anything else , the best 'mage' gear is the best 'melee dps' gear is the best 'tank gear' . Higher rarity weapons even do the same damage as same level white-versions so even an epic drop here or there fails to be exciting.
Ocassionaly you find pre-determined drops from bosses and chests that are always far better than any drop you would have found normally (untill you start learning lategame to just stack massive amounts of crit and crit damage) further reducing any kind of excitement a good drop would get you.
These issues combine to make the game far too easy even on the newly added 'deathpocalypse difficulity', no matter what stats you try to focus on or playstyle you try enemies get stunlocked and die in simple combos. The hardest part of the game is fighting the camera in multi-man battles due to your dodge direction being relative to the the monster you are targetting. I didnt even mention the fact you can fully replenish your potions inbetween every single fight by fast travelling to town or how lifesteal/freeze/slow/stun on crit make anything thats not a 1shot just not be a threat to you. You actively have to commit not using reaper form in fights because auto-win gets boring after a while.
The talent tree requires constant respeccing, this due to some abilities and upgrades being level locked but not requiring previous nodes either. You have 4 quickslots and 8 abilities (+ items) so its generally better to fully upgrade a skill you like over 1 pointing all of them. For example the 'melee damage buff' unlocks at level 8 , before that you only can put points in the 'teleport slash' ability , if you dont like that ability anymore or you feel its redundant every single point before that is wasted and respeccing them into the melee buff as soon as you unlock it is the only way to make them useful again. Not to mention talents like '25% chance for blink strike to ignite (max [3] rank is 35%) are just not exicting to begin with.

CONCLUSION

Im cutting my rant off here but you can see im extremely dissapointed in the sequel. Every change made feels like it was done for the sake of adhering to a focus group or 'mainstream' game design and it really messes with the 'Edgy Manly Zelda' vibe that made game 1 so good and a bit of an underrated cult classic.
There are a bunch of things that i havent even touched on (Dead pages being hidden in random barrels but you need all of them for the cool bonus dungeons and endgame armor, Possessed weapons, Death 'hating' doing chores but doing them for everyone and everything anyways, the horrible camera on giant enemies, the story feeling like filler etc..) but by now you hopefully see how the game actively tries to go against its own design.
If you havent played Darksiders 1, buy that instead and enjoy the better game. If you REALLY want more darksiders and are ok with a game trying and failing to reinvent itself by adding more shallow mechanics that go nowhere then its a still a competently made game with pretty nice graphics and a neat soundtrack.

Just a really dissapointing sequel and it makes you sad about what the franchise 'could' have been if they actually had more confidence in the product and vision they were selling instead of desperately appealing to every possible audience.

It's appropriate they made Death the protagonist because I'm longing for him to take my soul and end my misery when I play it.

This is the original game that got me hooked on darksiders. The story is amazing. The gameplays great and to see darksiders 2 remastered is a great great thing seeing as I thought it was the best of the series so far. Death is an awesome character and if you LOVE stories and dungeon/adventure games (like Zelda) you'll absolutely LOVE this series and game. Dark Siders 4 where it would finish up the story and let you play through Strifes trials and tribulations would be the thing/game im looking forward most to ever seeing before I die. Seriously if you've not played any of these games... Start with either 2 or 3 and then go back and play 1-3 + genesis. You'll fall in love with the creative fantasy style story that tells of the 4 horseman and 7 sins... With a plot.. who you don't know who is behind ... that brought about the apocalypse.... This game/series gets a 10/10 from me. A MUST.

Story seems to be interesting. If the game wasn't crashing all the time, maybe I'd be actually interested to find out more.
Constant freezing after exiting a menu, with workarounds that'll spin your head over and over.

Also what's up with the camera movements?

Given that it's an older game and that hasn't been fixed, a big NO for me.

I guess most people who will play this game have already played the Darksiders 1. So i will just mention the difference between the 2 games. The overall amount of content of the game and the map of Darksider 2 is at least 3 times larger than Darksiders 1. It's not just a Hack and Slash game anymore, it's now a full scale RPG, with lots of different types of weapons and armors suitable for various types of builds (like the Dark souls game). Such as melee attack focused power build, or Magic Build, or Critical attack builds (my favorite) etc.

highly recommend this game, gives a good sense of adventure and world building.

For a game made by a company going bankrupt at the time, this game is an amazing masterpiece even with its flaws. The 3d puzzles, and the platforming straight out of prince of persia this game has some amazing dungeons.

Some suggestions to those wanting to play, first theres a guide out there on how to play with a wider FOV, i highly recommend this, next is for some reason there are some bugs in the game, a quick fix is doing a quick reload. BUT in certain boss fights if your screen freezes in the middle of fight, the one fix that helped me out is just dont equip the gun when fighting them ie dont use it all in that one fight/s.

Darksiders 2 is a game that I have tried to finish for years but I never seem to succeed at it. I always end up quitting the game at the kingdom of the dead which is the second area of the game.

- The beginning of the game is actually pretty good. It starts off strong. Redeeming your brother sounds like a great story. It probably is. I wouldn't know about that. The forge lands is a beautiful place and I very much liked it but when I reached the kingdom of the dead, the game started getting really tiresome to play. Mostly because at this point I was pretty bored by fetch quests and the fetch quests only got worse in the kingdom of the dead. The game has this annoying thing with 3 objectives. For example bring back 3 lords. Even when I went to get one of the lords he made me bring him 3 souls. This got old and fast. I guess I just imagined that the death itself wouldn't have to serve in the kingdom of the death.

- I found platforming to be pretty nice. There isn't much to it but I still enjoyed it.

- Combat is simple, though I still enjoyed it, that is before the kingdom of the dead. Why is that? Well before reaching that lovely place enemies had attacks that could be interrupted and attacks that couldn't be interrupted. This is the same in the kingdom of the death but before the enemies had this glow when they went for an uninterruptible attack. For some reason in the kingdom of the death they stopped using that mechanic so there really wasn't a way to know if you could stop the attack. It just made me play very carefully and use combos that wouldn't put me in a risk. It took the enjoyment that I had in the combat away.

- There are a lot of puzzles in the game. They aren't very hard but they do get a bit old.

- Level design is pretty good.

- Loot system is something that shouldn't have been in the game in my opinion. Some like it, some hate it. I just found it boring to stop and always check if the loot I got was better than what I had on.

- The game did something great though and that is the soundtrack, one of the reasons why I tried really hard to finish this game. Just check out the Guardian's theme. Jesper Kyd did a great job.

- Graphics of the original game are beautiful but in the remaster the lighting takes a turn for the worse and I feel like it doesn't match the art style of the game that well. Speaking of art style, it is beautiful. I ended up using a reshade for the remaster to get the feeling of the original game.

- Now for the technical stuff. Not too many graphics options. No support for ultrawide. I had to use cheat engine to hide the minimap objectives because they would break on ultrawide. I also had to use cheat engine to increase the fov.

I feel like it is a game that tried to be too many things and hence why it doesn't really deliver well on anything, except on the music. It is a jack of all trades, master of none. The first game didn't have as much stuff going on and that is why it delivered a better experience, at least for me. Darksiders 2 is not a bat game but not that great either. Do I recommend it? It depends what you are looking for I guess. If you don't mind the negatives I have mentioned then go for it. But considering that I have played Darksiders 2 for over 50 hours and still haven't managed to finish the game since I end up losing my interest in it. I will give the game a thumbs down.

Unplayable, it is a great game, but with a very bad implementation in PC, it freezes all the time, has a lot of bugs and simply is unplayable, I´d like the review system to have star options to give this game 0, because I have played less than 15 minutes and I already had to force quit more than 30 times because it stops working. Hard to believe that in 2020 steam hasn´t resolved this issues

Pros:
+ Fun hack & slash gameplay
+ Several semi-open world maps to explore

Cons:
- Lots of performance issues that hinder the gameplay and which you have to fix yourself with several tweaks and patches
- Not enough side quests considering how big the maps are
- The Necromancy skill tree is slightly overpowered and make the game a little bit too easy

Do I recommend?
It's decent hack & slack experience with some mild RPG elements included. I consider this game as one of the must-play hack & slash games, but only after you've fixed the performance problems yourself.

Verdict: 6.5/10 - Would be 8/10 if it wasn't for those performance problems

It's a bit hard to recommend this because compared to Darksiders 1 they leaned more into combat here but: they didn't make the camera angles better, the AIs aren't smarter but rather they're given good tracking to their attacks, levels and gear are what determines how decent you are in a fight. It all just doesn't feel good. And in terms of story, Death's quest is honestly really simple but he becomes everyone's errand boy which feels like a lot of padding and doesn't give much depth into what he's doing. Too bad it's a 'meh' though because I like Death's character and his VA, he did a great job bringing Death to life with his tones and inflections.

Also I didn't encounter as much crashes as I did compared to others, encountered them mostly on my new game+ run during the crucible. Lots of audio bugs though wherein a lot of audio suddenly don't play.

This game has some major technical issues. Constant stuttering, major screen tearing, game freezing up after leaving a menu, mouse lagging...
Some of these can be solved by scouring old forum posts and tinkering with external(!) tools, but I couldn't resolve the menu freezing and the unplayable stuttering. Don't count on the in-game settings to work.

Best part of it all: The vanilla game runs more than fine.

normally i don't recommend this game because of that glitchs, crashes but i love this game universe. soundtracks, arts, gameplay and of course Death amazing.

+ almost every soundtrack awesome in this game. my favourite intro song and the makers overworld.
+ death is a amazing character. i don't know which one my favourite death or war but i know both of them awesome.
+ gameplay you already know. classic darksiders gameplay.
+ puzzles fair enough. not like darksiders 1 (last hours was heavy puzzles i was bored)
+ views... i can't tell. well done developers...

- story fine but ended suddenly.
- one of them npc (my favourite character) dialogues was glitched and i couldn't talk properly.
- item ability explanation insufficient and not usable.
- Archon cutscene crashing (this happening because you're about the level up. you need to level up somehow and try again. this is the only solution i guess.)
- other crashes have no solution these crashes made me tired.
- side quests usually boring and errand things... BORING
- Arbiter's Maze also waste of time too long (but boss fight was ok)
- you can't move some specific places (especially happening at maker's forge). you need to save game and turn main menu then you can continue your game until next time :D .
- sometimes the sound glitching. animation sound, character sound just disappearing. you need to restart game. this glitch especially annoying because something lack in the game and you can't focus the game.
- wrath potion bug. i played second half of the game without wrath potions. they are not working. (i think this is happening because of Black Demise scythe.)
- all of these dlcs are short but it s ok, except that the abyssal forge. in the abyssal forge you're just doing errand things. final boss... i hated. you can't see anything because of that lavas and camera locked to boss. i've never used that focus thing because it's glitch as well. focusing wrong foes. useless...
- oh i forgot. why they did reaper form so weak? looking amazing but i used that form max 10-15 times. no damage. also lasting short. War chaos form was fine.
- there is no one around me but sometimes i can't use fast travel. i must turn main menu and continue for fast travels...
- demon part was so simple and was short am i wrong?
- like darksiders 1 gameplay too long. i finished 28 hours but it could have been 20 hours. there are things unnecessary...

almost all my negative things including bug, glitch, crash. i played this 2020. If only I played when it came out i can't imagine myself...

It's a good game. Incredibly frustrating at times because of how dumb the camera can be and how easy it is to trap yourself in a corner, but it's a good game because of how great the combat feels once you get a grasp of it. I recommend just playing on Deathinitive or Apocalyptic, there's really no other way to experience this game in all its glory. It's buggy, rage-inducing but incredible. Highly recommend for anyone who even slightly enjoys RPGs and action-adventure games.

One of the most underrated games I've played. The theme/setting might feel a bit overused since its nothing new but the cut-scenes and graphics are top tier and action packed. The gameplay is smooth and feels great.

Darksiders is a peculiar game series, one of the few games out there that attempts to ride the hype of 3D Zelda, while also combining it with Devil May Cry-esque combat, and a world and cast that feels like something out of a 90’s comic book from Image or Dark Horse. It’s all an interesting mish mash of concepts that aren’t usually put together, this one in particular adds a randomly generated loot system into the mix, open world mechanics, and a proper level system and skill tree, making the ultimate goulash of games from the early 10’s.

For starters, the thing that, right off the bat, really impressed me about Darksiders 2 is the combat, it moves so quickly and so fluidly, that i was genuinely surprised at how fun it remained throughout most of the game, even though it’s really hurting for variety, having only 1 main weapon and 2 types of sub-weapons, with the 8 individual sub-weapon classes all sharing 1 of 2 move sets. You can purchase new moves as the game goes on, but they rarely result in anything game-changing, and you aren’t incentivized strongly enough to use different moves, you don’t have a style meter, they don’t really open up new combo options, the only real reason to buy them is well, for fun, which is a good enough reason in my mind. The thing that makes the combat feel like it’s dragging on by the time the game ends, is that there simply isn’t enemy variety, and the ones that are there don’t feel like they’re anything worth nothing, it’s very basic for an action game, there are big enemies that are slow, and small enemies that are fast, it’s so standard that after finishing the game a week ago, i’m already struggling to even remember the designs of any of them, let alone what they actually felt like fighting against.

The occasional attempts to shake things up don’t go completely unnoticed though, the boss fights are decently creative an unique, and unlike the regular encounters, they go by pretty quick, so even though they start running dry on gimmicks for about 1/3 of the bosses, they’re always pretty engaging. A much less successful endeavor would be about 2/3rd’s into the game, in which, for whatever reason, the game introduces a half hour long shooting segment where waves upon waves of enemies have to be gunned down as you make your way through an item collecting trek, i liked this part at first, and then soured on it by the time i had collected the second, out of three, items, this is an example of trying to vary gameplay that doesn’t work at all, but is fortunately limited to only a few moments in this adventure.

The weapon collecting, and skill progression are one of the harder things to talk about in the game. I’ve always been a huge fan of randomly generated loot, especially in genres that don’t usually have said mechanics, but the way it’s handled in Darksiders 2 makes it feel like it should’ve been thought out more, the game was developed under a dying publisher after all, i think with a little bit more time, it could’ve been really engaging, but as it is… it’s just not great. The boss weapons are always the ideal path for me, random drops are just fodder that are either sacrificed or sold, it was incredibly rare that i would find something that i could even think about using. Abilities were also interesting, but underdeveloped, the usage of meter can be an interesting mechanic in an action game, and this game falls just short of making it really interesting, the abilities are pretty basic, as far as games go, there’s a minion summon, a health steal, a shield, a projectile, the works. The Devil Trigger is a massive misfire too, it takes way too long to charge up, and just makes you invincible and deal more damage for about 8 seconds.

The other focus of this this game, is exploration, both dungeon crawling, and roaming the not-so-open world. The dungeons in this game are quite easily comparable to those in The Legend of Zelda, it is this game’s primary inspiration inspiration, after all, but the thing that makes it stand out, is the sheer amount of dungeons in the game. Dungeons in Darksiders 2 are plentiful, short, and to the point. The traditional Zelda cycle of “Enter dungeon, get item, get boss key, fight boss” is noticeably absent, in fact, there are only 4 puzzle solving items in the game, and each of them, with the exception of the Vodwalker is very clearly an allusion to an item in a Zelda game. The Deathgrip is a clawshot, Redemption is a bow, and the Soul-Splitter is the “Elegy of Emptiness“, in addition to these all, there’s a single use dungeon item that allows you to control 2 spirit minions, that, to me, feels like controlling Phantom Zelda in Spirit Tracks. Though the items are limited, the game still manages to make use of them pretty well, especially since the focus is put more on the inner workings of the dungeons themselves, with most of them having their own gimmicks, like controlling the flow of water, or working with the 10 foot tall blacksmith that can toss you across platforms.

The worlds of Darksiders 2 are un-characteristically beautiful, Darksiders and Darksiders 3 are nothing to write home about, but this game looks downright mystifying at times, the art style is used to it’s fullest here, with every character looking at least a somewhat distinct design. The flair of the world is what really brings it to life, there’s such a desolate feeling of emptiness in the areas, it perfectly captures the concept of post-apocalyptic worlds, one that used to be inhabited by man, one for dead, and one for the makers. It’s a shocking amount of personality for a game that i went into thinking it was going to be much more drab and subdued than it actually was. There is some serious life to the environment.

The story and characters were another aspect of the game that i found engaging, against all odds, the main character, Death, is a compelling protagonist, that i found myself actually caring about by the end of the game, due in no small part to the voice actor (Michael Wincott) providing an excellent performance, that even got a little bit emotional at times. The supporting cast is full of weirdos and screwballs that also manage to worm their way into my consciousness, this game builds a world that has something to care about, even if it’s only for a moment.

Darksiders 2 is one of my favorite games from the later portion of the last generation, it’s my favorite Darksiders game, it’s like a top 10 action game, and a very enjoyable game over all.

I just recently discovered the Darksiders series, and I played this game right after Darksiders 1 Warmastered edition, so I can give a fresh impression on what to expect if you are in the same boots.

In short Darksiders 2 has some drawbacks, but also major improvements compared to the firs game.

My main problem with the game was the change of theme: in DS1, you had the chance to travel all around in a demon infested, post-apocalyptic landscape, which was awesome. Here, the first main map (which takes more than 5 hours to finish) is some sort of grassland with green-covered ruins, which was quite disappointing. The next area is more appealing, but I had to play for 15 hours to finally get to the Heaven-Hell-Earth themed areas.

They also failed to balance the gametime amongst these areas: playing in the same theme gets boring after 5 hours, and the first 2 chapters are tediously long, but as you progress in the game, each new area offers less and less content, thus becoming faster to finish.

Apart from this, all other aspects of the game is better than DS1, graphics, game mechanics are improved, puzzles and combats are more varied, the protagonist is well written, the characters are better explained, and there are huge areas to discover, compared to DS1's narrowed down maps.

To sum up things I struggled to finish the first 5-6 hours of the game, as I found it utterly boring. However after I managed to finish this part, the athmosphere got better and better, and by the time I finished the game (which takes about net 18-20 hrs), I truly enjoyed it, the last 2 chapters were absolutely amazing, both visually and story-wise.

CONCLUSION:

Did I enjoy DS2? - Apart from the rough start, I had great fun with this game.

Do I recommend this game? - Absolutely, it does show new aspects of the Darksiders universe, and despite his reputation, Death is a likeable protagonist who deserves his story to be completed.

Who should avoid this game? - If you did not like DS1, or don't like hack and slash action games with puzzle solving elements in general, you will not like this one either.

Who should buy this game? - If you liked DS1, you must play this one as well, for the story, for the experience. Just get through the first chapter, and you will be OK. Also, if you don't know what is Darksiders, and you managed to read this review this far, well, it is a heaven and hell themed action game, the best of its kind. If you liked comics like Spawn or Constantine, you must give this one a shot, but I advise buying and playing the first title first, and then this one, to get the story right.

You won't regret it.

The game that introduced me to the series back in 2012. It's even better than I remember it. Improving on the first games Zelda like formula, with better puzzles and dungeon designs. It also goes with more of an rpg approach to character progression, which I enjoyed. The soundtrack by Jesper Kyd is fantastic and the visuals have aged really well. The only negative that I can point out revolves around an audio issue. The sound would just cut out every now and again, which required a restart on occasion. Overall I loved the game and look forward to replaying on Nightmare Difficulty! - 9/10

So, Darksiders 1 was amazing. It had a deep lore and the whole quest of War chasing the truth was fantastic. The dungeons made sense. The bosses made sense.

Darksiders 2 on the other hand...

- In regards of plot: There's nothing going on in this game. Suposedly Death is trying to save his Brother War, but 85% of the game is just an item hunt, running errands after errands just to get some useless information.

- In regards of gameplay: Some RPG mechanics were added, which felt fresh after playing the first game, which I think was a good decision. However the high amount of sidequests felt kind of out of place. You dont have any motivation to run side quests like you do in regular RPGs, so that was definetly a miss. The game also has a massive amount of bugs.

I wasnt able to finish the game because I got tired of it. I watched the rest of the story in Youtube, just for the sake of finishing the plot, but event that wasn't worth it.

After playing this game, I dont think I'll be paying attention to the rest of the games in this franchise.

This is a phenomenal game. I love the combat, story, and world that this game holds. The only problems with this game are the bugs. If you talk to the Archon for the first time and you level up from completing the attached quest, then your game crashes. If you attempt to shoot a few of the bosses in specific scenarios, such as big Absolom in the crucible, or the dragon while it's running away in the Argul additional campaign, then it instantly crashes. If you play the game for too long, all sounds will stop. It starts off slowly, but you lose more and more noises, until all dialogue is gone and the cutscenes become unbearable, because even the subtitles vanish. As bad as that sounds though, a quick restart to the game and everything comes back, and you just need to not shoot those bosses in those scenarios, and the game runs perfectly fine. I still find it to be an outstanding game. I first played it on my Xbox 360 nearly a decade ago and I still think that it's the best of the series.

Numerous glitches, V-sync errors with climbing then shuttting down if you happen to Alt-Tab to something else, gameplay, and everything else about this is actually less than the original. This sequel is what happens when a company has a chance to improve and falls flat. The storyline basically follows the original, which does nothing to make Death a decently fleshed out character. If War has Stength over Agility, Death only has Speed. His climbing maneuvers aren't fluid, his gadgets don't come until much later in the game, so that you have to backtrack almost even more than the first game to get all the chests (which ultimately have gear you won't use, unless sacrificing it to a Possessed weapon). I feel like this game took what was good about the first, and just lessened the entire experience. While Steam thinks I have close to 40 hours in this game, I'm actually under 20, the rest of it being on Pause, while I go do other things. I've walked away from this game enough that after my first playthrough, I highly doubt I will ever touch this game again.

This game is a stellar fun-to-play adventure/combat/dungeon puzzle game. The story is pretty cool, the character design and art direction are fantastic, and the music is on point.

I would say this game is 1/3 combat, which is generally pretty simple but still fun. The other 2/3 of the game are puzzle solving and dungeon exploration (think classic Zelda games). None of it is particularly difficult or challenging, but certain areas may make you think longer than others and it definitely rewards completionists who want to revisit areas later after acquiring new abilities and accessing previously inaccessible areas.

As for bugs, there are a log of reviews that kind of slam this game for bugs and such but honestly, I finished my play through with minimal bugs, if any at all. The music cut out once (fixed by restarting the game) and it crashed a total of one time. There is one instance of a specific bug that causes a crash (late game, if a certain quest causes you to level up the game crashes; fixed by leveling up before that quest).

Darksiders 2 is a solid game and if this adventure/platform/combat mix is the type of game you've enjoyed in the past, you'll have a good time with this one too.

I didn't like the fighting in the first game because it felt so underdeveloped. Well, the developers obviously worked on that, but now it feels like a hack 'n' slash game. I don't really enjoy that either. It feels silly in comparison to games like Devils May Cry.

The open world doesn't add any deopth at all and feels completely out of place. Exploring is punished by letting you run deep into levels and than block your path with a puzzle that can only be solved with a skill you only acquire later. Or they let you run into bosses which are completely outside your level range. Backtracking is one of several nuisances you run into again and again.

Speaking of player levels: Those cheap RPG elements also feel completely out of place, but you also cannot ignore them.

Just like the first game, I enjoyed Darksiders II very much outside of fights. But obviously they are a huge part of the game, and they are annoying. All in all, I don't think I could really really recommend the game.

The game itself is amazing and very much enjoyable, but when it comes to the Abyssal Forge DLC the huge disappointment strikes. The boss is glitchy (haven't experienced that one myself, but read quite a few in forums). The glitches that happened to me were in Shadow Helm. When you first walk in you need to use Soul Splitter to stand on a lever with one soul and get the ball with the other. Unfortunately, I didn't know that back then... When I used the soul splitter and jumped on the lever, the splitter just canceled and the gate (that should be closed if the lever isn't pushed) remained open. So I walked in cluelessly, got the ball, but couldn't get back, thank god restarting the game was all it took to fix it. On the other puzzle, you had to soul splitt again, complete the puzzle to once again get the ball that drops on the rotating bridge bellow where Death's statue is after soul splitting. When the ball drops and you go back to your original form (or stay as a soul, it doesn't matter) you can't move the ball, unless you spam (atleast for me) the scroll wheel and E at the same time to somehow get it to the required spot. Sadly I did that with my original form, thus meaning that my bridge was in the incorrect position. So I just pushed the ball to one end of the bridge. After rotating the bridge, using the soul splitter, the ball just bounced around the map and dropped in lava. Now... I tried everything I could've think of to get it out, but nothing worked, thus preventing me from completing the dungeon. In a nutshell the game itself is amazing but you need to fix that damn dlc

While I love and enjoy the aesthetic of this game, as well as the general gameplay loop, I can not recommend Darksiders 2 at all. This is a bug addled product to a level that reaps it (pun intended) of any true enjoyment. First I had to manually force VSync from the Nvidia control panel just to prevent the game from crashing when i went into the menus. Then, if we simply ignore the constant graphic and input glitches peppered throughout the gameplay, I came across a bug that wouldnt let me get past a mandatory story cutscene. I had to set the game to it's beta branch in order to bypass this. Then, again turning a blind eye to the countless, I come across the worst damn glitch of all. This is the one worth reading this review for. So the last boss, the LAST damn boss of the game, has a game breaking bug. Any attempt to use your pistol, one of three weapons in your arsenal, will result in the game completely locking up. The LAST BOSS OF THE GAME! Attempting to go into your reaper form (essentially a super mode with big damage) will also present this bug. Even if there is a fix at this point, Im just too disappointed to bother. I'll watch the ending on youtube and feel otherwise disappointed in my experience.

Become the reaper

Preparing for the writing of this review was a little bit more complicated than usual. I was solid 20 hours into the Darksiders 2 playthrough when I was gifted a Deathinitive Edition key. Not wanting to start the game over I simply carried on with the playthrough. Only after beating the game did I realise that Darksiders 2 no longer has a store page – which by extension, also means reviews. Hereby, the new game+ replay started much faster than I initially anticipated. Having played both versions of the game back-to-back I can tell – Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition is the one to go for. It is simply a bigger, better looking “remaster” at the price the base game had.

Darksiders 2 is a second entry to a series of action games depicting the fate of 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. The game is a blend of brutal combat and environmental puzzles in equal measure. The sequel sets itself apart from the first game with a partially open world and RPG-like equipment system. As the horsemen imply, the game draws certain themes from the Christian faith, though only in broadest sense – Darksiders features its own fantasy universe, embroiled in eternal war between heavens and hell.

Death is coming
Second instalment to the franchise focuses on Death – the skull-masked leader of the group, said to be the most powerful of the four. The Horsemen of Darksiders are agents of balance – angels and demons may have their schemes, the scales may occasionally tip to a side, but a single race may never control all of the creation. Should any faction be foolish enough to overstep, the horsemen will be called and Death shall reap his harvest.

Except this time there was no call, Death rides of his own volition and will have to handle things alone. After a mishap of truly biblical proportions happened in the first game, the humanity has been wiped from the existence. A mistake that Death is now trying to repair. While horseman’s goals align with upholding the balance, Death’s motivation is far more mundane – he tries to save his brother War, who is seemingly involved in mankind’s annihilation. While familiarity with previous Darksiders adds a nice touch to the game, it is by no means mandatory. Darksiders 2 provides a complete self-contained story, that has the player visit different realms and even Death’s own past.

Horsemen, not footmen
The most striking departure from the first game is the presence of the vast open areas and roads that lead to dungeon-like locations where most of the action takes place. Alas, horse-riding is no longer relegated to a footnote. While you are not allowed to use the horse indoors, your ghastly steed Despair, will be invaluable aid in traversing the main map. Believe me, there is plenty to explore. Not only Darksiders 2 plays out over the span of 4 realms (2 large and 2 smaller ones). The game is filled with picturesque landscapes and monumental structures. The developers went all-out on the environmental design, with many cutscenes and location transitions designed precisely to showcase it. This also holds true to many dungeon interiors, at times filled with intricate details.

Extensive sightseeing has gameplay applications as well, especially with Deathinitive Edition filling the few blanks in the main campaign. The map is full of chests and collectibles to truly get the player looking under every nook and cranny. Treasure hunting plays a big role in Darksiders 2 thanks to a new equipment system. Death wears a set of armour, his trademark scythes and a heavy weapon. Each comes with a rarity level and a multitude of statistics that allow the player to tailor Death to their preferred style of play. The drops are highly randomised and you never know if the next chest doesn’t contain just the treasure you need. Darksiders 2 also has a money system and a merchant in every hub to provide you with the essentials in exchange for an adequate amount of coins. Even if you are not the completionist type, the game rewards any amount of effort put into stepping off the beaten track. Foremost, there is a number of optional locations and bossfights available, just getting there might prove quite tricky.

Mortal acrobtics
For an action title, Darksiders 2 includes a surprising amount of environmental puzzles of varying difficulty. Death will be pulling, turning, pushing around and scaling ledges repeatedly before reaching the end of his quest. Frankly, most of the puzzles can be solved on the fly - although, every once in a while there is a complex one that gets the gears turning proper. Especially, if you are unfamiliar with this kind of game, there will be entire sections where combat serves as a break from puzzles rather than the opposite. I found this somewhat slower pace quite enjoyable, though it’s not for everyone. Those among you who wish to play Darksiders 2 for the bloody harvest alone, might find the game tedious at times.

This is also where the cracks on the game’s surface start to show. All the wallruning and jumping over bottomless chasms felt way more organic on ruined Earth of the first game. In Darksiders 2 it feels like you need two wallruns and a leap over spike-filled pit to reach the toilet. The original Darksiders 2 also had certain problems with collision detection. Bouncing of the ledges rather than grabbing them or getting stuck mid-air over objects wasn’t fun. Luckily, Deathintive fixes most of such problems, though also adds a new one. On some vine-covered walls Death gets stuck, forcing the player to awkwardly wiggle their way through rather than climb. What didn’t change between versions is minimizing the game. It’s ill-advised as the game gets exceptionally volatile once you do. Half the time it will simply crash, disrupt the sound or get stuck on menu window.

Deathinitely worthwhile
That being said, those are minor dents in an otherwise brilliant and diverse action title. The biggest addition Deathinitive Edition brings are 3 extra campaigns, each taking roughly an hour to complete. They are unlocked after beating the main game and are quite fun, should the campaign leave you longing for more. Darksiders 2 is truly all about having fun. Need to backtrack? Here’s a quicktravel option. Your equipment is full? The unique boss reward awaits in your mailbox. Looking for a fight? Here’s an arena with nearly every enemy present in the game. On top of that, during the course of the main campaign Darksiders 2 casually becomes a zombie shooter, for a change of pace. Perhaps, few kinks were left, but in the grand scheme of things it is a well thought-out game created with “cool” in mind as a main principle.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this title to casual and experienced players alike. It is a stellar action title, best enjoyed when playing with a gamepad. Darksiders 2 did visibly age but it still holds well today and manages to provide picturesque visuals. The gameplay itself hasn’t aged a day. Do give it a try, with the revival of THQ Nordic and subsequent release of Darksiders 3 and Genesis, it is the best time to get excited with the franchise in years.

This game is great. The art direction kinda resembles the one for Warcraft, which in my opinion looks stylish. Gameplay wise nothing much changes from Darksiders 1, very good hack and slash action with multiple combos to learn. What's also cool are the boss fights, always challenging. A few bugs here and there, specially one before talking to the main Angel guy, game breaking unless you learn that you gotta have low exp before talking to him. I would still recommend this game after that tho. Didn't get much of the story also, kinda convoluted and I personally did not understand the ending. Maybe you will. Puzzles are not that hard, but they offer a nice change of pace from all the combat.

The 2nd installation of the Darksiders Series.
I finished the game first, including the DLCs. before writing this review. Right now I'm in NG+ and planning to do Crucible 100 and the achievements left that needs NG+.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1963952253

The were only two problem that I've been experienced that I like to point out. The first one is that sometimes the games BGM will never play and all of the SFX including voice lines do not play properly or not in sync. I couldn't find any other way to fix this aside from restarting the game. The second is there is a point in the game that you might get stuck because of a companion and how it's path on the map has been coded. Good thing is that if you restart the game you will go back to a previous checkpoint.

The movements in game are improved compared to the previous one. The target lock and camera is still bad just like the first one. But this has been improved in Darksiders 3.

The RPG elements are okay but I think it's not for all people. If you don't have anything to do, it's okay to farm possesed weapons but it doesn't fit the Horsemen. Imagine the Horsemen using weapons and armours from random enemies in the game. They should stick to the fix weapon and armor from Darksiders 1 and upgrade those. I also don't feel like level system is the best direction for the game. Who wants to grind anyway. Health and wrath shards are still the better and the Creature Cores Tree that they did in Genesis. These elements are something that are unique to the franchise and they should focus on improving those.

The story, map and scale of the game are really much bigger than the previous game. And this game have the largest scale out of the three games. Darksiders 1 still have the best ending.

But what I really like the most is Death's sarcasm in this game. :steammocking:

My overall rating: 8/10

After all these years, Darksiders II remain as one of my favorite games ever, and the very best in the franchise. The company basically went bankrupt to make this game, and with good reason. Darksiders II has aged beautifully, with combat and narrative still satisfying with lore that rivals many other religion based games such as God of War and Diablo. It has always been an absolute pleasure to play this game.
