Wirklich hübsche Gruselgeschichte.
Man spielt ein Horror-Adventure, wo man die Schauplätze in Einzelschritten durchwandert und dort dann frei beweglich nach Objekten etc. sucht und verwendet.
In diversen Schriftstücken versucht man durch Unterstreichen Hinweise für weitere Schlussfolgerungen und Wegweiser zu finden.
Das Ganze ist sehr nett gemacht und unterhält einen etliche Stunden.
Man kommt einer uralten Sekte auf die Spur und versucht Licht ins Dunkel zu bringen.
Am Ende stellt sich natürlich die Frage, was ist real, was sind Wahnvorstellungen oder Halluzinationen?
Bei Steam gibt es eine sehr gute englischsprachige Lösung, die einem bei den manchmal doch schwer zu entdeckenden zusammenhängenden Schlussfolgerungen und Suchbegriffen hilft.
Survival-Elemente oder angreifende Monster sucht man hier zum Glück vergebens.
Wer aber eine schöne Gruselgeschichte erzählt haben möchte und gerne Detektiv spielt, ist hier absolut richtig abgehoben.
Ich habe lange mit dem Kauf gewartet und habe jetzt im Sale für 2 Euro zugeschlagen, das hat sich mehr als bezahlt gemacht.
Fazit: kaufen, kaufen, kaufen!

Die Stimmung ist wirklich gruselig, schön in diesem Spiel. Als H. P. Lovecraft-Fan kommt man hier definitiv auf seine Kosten. Es gibt zwei bis drei mittelschwere Jumpscares, davon abgesehen ist der Horror subtiler und wird durch die Sounds und den stimmungsvollen Soundtrack erzeugt, was einem oft ein beklemmendes Gefühl beschert.
Die Story ist verwirrend, geheimnisvoll und unheimlich; wer ein Auflösungszenario à la Sherlock Holmes erwartet, wird hier nicht fündig werden. Dies macht aber grade die Lovecraft-Atmosphäre aus und lässt einen auch nach dem Spiel noch lange über die Geschichte nachdenken...
Die innovative Idee, auch Hinweise (Gedanken sammeln) im Inventar zu haben, die man wiederum mit Gegenständen etc. kombinieren kann, ist prinzipiell sehr gut.
Die Spielgrafik hat mich etwas verwirrt und ich habe das Bild zuerst heller gemacht, dann habe ich mich doch auf den surrealen Schein und die Dunkelheit eingelassen (nur das Dauerrauschen habe ich weggelassen) und es nicht bereut - man fühlt sich wie in einem Buch von Lovecraft, die Farben und Effekte fangen die Stimmung grandios ein.
Wer Scratches mag, wird dieses Spiel auch mögen. :)

Das Unterstreichen in den Dokumenten hat bei mir leider nur teilweise funktioniert, somit konnten nicht alle Achievments freigeschaltet werden und man konnte nicht alle Hinweise finden, die für eine weitere Auflösung wichtig sind. Manche Dokumente konnten gar nicht angestrichen werden, obwohl Hinweise in ihnen gefunden werden sollten. Dennoch kann man das Spiel beenden.
Generell ist das Unterstreichen in den Dokumenten (obwohl es eine gute Idee ist) nicht gut gelöst, da man EXAKT das unterstreichen muss, was die Entwickler sich überlegt haben (manchmal ein spezielles Wort). Dies war nicht wirklich intuitiv lösbar und eher frustrierend.
Die Steuerung im Menü ist nicht besonders intuitiv und etwas sperrig.

Darkness Within ist ein Point & Click Adventure mit leichter Horror Atmosphäre und einem von Lovecraft inspirierten Plot.
Man erlebt das Spiel aus der Ego Perspektive, dabei bewegt man sich nicht mit WASD, sonder klickt sich durch 360° Bilder.
Die Rätsel sind größtenteils logisch, jedoch kann die komplette Abwesenheit elementarer Hinweise (zusätzlich ist die Hilfe-Funktion meist nichts-sagend) bei einigen Rätseln in motivationslosigkeit enden.
Ein Rätsel erfordert zum Beispiel ein Datum, welches nur durch das Kombinieren von Hinweisen im Spielinternen Gedankenlog, die nur durch rumprobieren zum erfolg führen, ersichtlich wird. Da das Kombinieren nur sehr sehr selten erforderlich und meist sinnlos ist, kommt man erst garnicht auf die Idee, es nutzen zu müssen.
Noch ein Beispiel. Man findet zwei Gegenstände, die man kombinieren muss und das probiert man dann auch. Nur blöd, dass jemand auf die grandiose Idee kam das auch im GEDANKENlog kombinieren zu müssen und es nirgends zu erwähnen.
Ein weiteres Spielelement besteht darin, Hinweise in Schriftstücken zu unterstreichen, welches auch in frustrierendes rumprobieren enden kann.

Diese Review mag zwar negativ klingen, wer jedoch eine gute Horror/Mysterie Story und Atmosphäre über das Gameplay stellen kann ist bei diesem Spiel genau richtig - Kultisten sollten sowieso zugreifen um allen außerweltlichen Kreaturen und den alten Göttern zu huldigen.
Mein Tipp beim spielen, mindestens das automatische Unterstreichen aktivieren, da viel richtig erscheinende Abschnitte nichts Wichtiges enthalten, obwohl dem so ist.

Schade.... das Spiel fängt super atmosphärisch an und zieht einen direkt in seinen Bann. Die Musik ist klasse und die deutsche Syncro auch. Die oldshoolige Bedienung fand ich nach einiger Eingewöhnung auch ganz gelungen. Die mehr oder weniger direkte Anlehnung an die Welt von H.P. Lovecraft steigerte noch meine Begeisterung. Allerdings kam ich schon nach wenigen Spielstunden kaum noch richtig weiter bis ich schließlich komplett steckenblieb. Denn die Rätzel sind teilweise so unmöglich zu lösen oder so unzusammenhängend, dass man meiner Meinung nach einfach nicht drauf kommen kann! Die Rätzel sind oft unintuitiv bis zufällig. Zudem kann man ein wichtiges Rätzel als europäischer Spieler gar nicht lösen, da es eine amerikanische Schreibweise des Datums verlangt, nämlich Monat vor dem Tag. So fiel für mich die anfänglich dichte Atmosphäre schnell in sich zusammen und die Rätzel, die oft noch nicht mal als solche zu erkennen waren, nervten nur noch. Schade.... hatte mir mehr erhofft! Vielleicht nur was für absolute Adventure-Profis???

Still the best lovecraftian 360° point and click adventures in this world. Darkness everywhere, pure atmosphere, awesome sounds and awesome music, the storys you have to read are so disturbing and terrifying (within original text passages from the writer), an absolutely perfect hommage to the work of H.P. Lovecraft. The gameplay is also very nice, you have to underline words combine phrases and stuff, it never gets boring. So if you fear the dark you will probably die in this game but if you are under the spell of nyctophilian people like lovecraft, you will love this masterpiece, but better prepare your mind for madness, insanity and the darkness within.

Amazing atmosphere and story building. Puzzle mechanics are interesting and the Lovecraftian mood is brilliantly executed.
Visually pleasing and matches the mood perfectly with the eerie audio.
Overall a really good experience even by today's standards.

If you want a Lovecraft like story and game, this is the best one on steam. Its creepy and has a great story. Do not go in thinking this game will hold your hand. You will be expected to read and think about puzzles and clues. It will not offer up the answer just because you want to move the story forward, although there are hints and difficulty settings to make it easy, it is still going to take more time than the average point and click mystery game. However, if you are in for the hunt, the atmosphere is fantastic and the sets you will find yourself in feel unsettling and charming. The UI is fine if you take time to figure it out. Its nothing more than a few menus and the controls are simple and flow as easy as any basic point and click.
TLDR, If you are looking for a Lovecraft like story game that lets you read and follow the clues yourself and unravel the mystery, this is a great game that you will love. If you dont feel like reading between the lines and thinking about the same clue or puzzle for awhile, give this game a pass. Its not for you. It will only feel slow and probably bore you.

-First of all love the sound tracks of this game.
-There are no jump scares.
-There are no guns.
-Simple Click & Point Game.

Without modern quality of life features, players will find them self hunting for specific pixels instead of enjoying the theme and atmosphere of the game.

As a game, it is clunky, slow, and frustrating. I pretty much gave up on caring about solving the puzzles myself and happily started using a guide to get through it when it was so often needed for me. I'm not the biggest fan of the point and click genre though so take that for what it is worth.
But as a Lovecraftian game? YES. It goes past the just Cthulhu and tentacles you get in other games. You go about investigating, reading old journals getting stories within stories, meeting odd characters, and see the sanity of the main character slowly stripped away as the truth of existence is forced upon them.
Going through the game you read so many well-written notes and each one is basically a little horror short story by itself. I really enjoyed this part of the game even though be warned it is a LOT of reading!
The art design looks wonderful, the sound is creepy as hell, albeit perhaps repetitive, and the story is just superb. Worth trying out since it is a low price even if you are on the fence about it.

Dark fustercluck of a game, gamma turned to 11 in a dark room and I still can't see nothing. Movement is tedious, clue system is tedious, linear and scripted gameplay, find the banana peel and use it on the door knob hidden-object style.

Though the aesthetics of the game gripped me at first and the novelty of having to actually read texts, deduce the leads in them and combine them with either thoughts, objects or observations is quite unique, all of this is bogged down by the way they are executed.
More often than not I find myself underlining every other sentence, simply because I don't see the need for the tidbit of information I'm supposed to find nor how knowing it would progress the story.
My lack of understanding can no doubt partly be attributed to the subpar writing of these texts. I found myself generally bothered by the repetition or even incorrect usage of specific phrasing. Also it's not uncommon to have two paragraphs follow one another whilst containing the exact same information but differently phrased.
In short many good ideas, but not enough play tested to come to an enjoyable ensemble.

If only they hadn't dropped the ball with the storyline at the very end, I would've called this a brilliant game. I hate horror games where they use cheap jump scares to instill fear and adrenaline inside your mind - that's the easiest way to go but not the path the devs of this game went. I believe it's so much more difficult to create a horror game based purely on the atmosphere and the story - it's a very delicate job.
Darkness Within starts building suspense right from the beginning as you set off to investigate an occult murder. As you gather clues and visit decrepit places, darkness starts to consume you bit by bit until you become involved in all that occult crap way too much for comfort. But as you fight not to lose your sanity you get sucked even deeper. And all that time not a single jump scare, and yet it always feels like something terrifying is waiting for you just behind the corner. Now that's a horror game concept I fully respect.
However, the ending kinda blows, it leaves many loose ends and is quite underwhelming in general. I hate when that happens but it is what is. Overall the game is very tasteful, not too difficult and will keep you interested until the end.

Great game, played it a long time ago on disk and hit a game breaking bug (very frustrating) but with the steam version the bug was fixed. I am glad I was able to come back to this game and finish it.

I really enjoyed this point-and-click game. It made me feel like a real-life detective (well, as far as it’s possible in a gaming medium). The riddles are quite logical and fairly difficult. It may take some time to crack the hardest ones, but I never found myself stuck to the point of frustration. It’s not unusual in this sort of games to get stuck for hours just because you overlooked one tiny little object in some dark corner. There is no pixel hunting here which is a big plus. The locations are neat and pleasant for the eye, and all pickable items are very well visible. Only observancy, a bit of inductive thinking and patience are required for successful puzzle solving.
I also want to mention one really cool feature (I never encountered it in other games, but I am not sure of it’s smth completely innovative)—it’s marking certain text in notes/diary pages if you find this text interesting or important. I had several moments of “oh cool, I knew it” when I marked a phrase and it turned out to be a real clue. But this is not all. Later you can even combine these clues to find out leads for the case.
The story seemed decent but nothing very impressive, maybe because it was too short and thus felt incomplete and obscure, leaving me with some unanswered question, e.g. the role of some characters.
Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder can boast excellent high-quality voice acting and pleasant ambient soundtrack which suits the moody and contemplative atmosphere of the game.
To me this game was an enjoyable puzzle solving experience.

This game starts off with some great pacing, fantastic ideas as well as some authentically chilling and eerie moments then as the difficulty starts to vamp up it turns into another generic frustrating adventure game albeit with some alluring Lovecraftian themes. Played best with a walkthrough unless you're a genius with a lot of patience and time on your hands. I am exaggerating but only just barely.

Weird Tales Of Gaming
- Some cleverly hiding references to Lovecraft, there are some in plain-sight and [Spoiler Warning] is one connected to the plot.
- Voice acting is top-notch.
- There are special hidden clues on documents (some) indicating deeper connections. While, others are not clues...
- Puzzles can be a frustration. They are achievable.
- The ambient is beautifully creepy; subtle pucks of guitar string, Drums bang–sudden stop and Cymbal crashing together unexpectedly (I. B.’s Cabin). Even the natural sounds sound real and believable.Some grammatical errors (nothing serious, just an odd spacing).
Conclusion
One of the finest examples of Lovecraftian Fiction–ever!

A great point and click game with Lovecraft and occult vibes.
Can be difficult at times unless you are focused to 100% but I like that challenge (and there are guides when you start pulling your hair!).
Fair price setting for a good game that lacks the graphics but has good sound and voice acting!

Great Lovecrafftian adventure/horror story.
As a police detective, you need to find out what happened to Carlk Field and why he was murdered and what the connection was with Loath Nolder.
Like many of these type of games, there's lot of reading involved. Find notes and books to gather clues and solve the mysteries of this adventure. In order to find all clues required to complete the game, you'll not only need to ffind notes and items, but also mark specific words or sentences correlating with the things happening around you, and this is quite a clever system. You cannot find clues to things you haven't learned about yet, so that adds a lot to realism. Now, in the highest difficulty setting, you have to ffind everything yourself. And since notes and books are spread out over several areas, it can become quite a hassle to remember where you've read what. So, to be sure, make some notes yourselves.
After you've found some clues, you might need to combine them to come to certain conclusions. This part I liked a bit less because some obvious connections couldn't be made while other more vague combinations are required to discover every little secret.
While it's already an older game, the rooms and objects are detailed enough for good immersion. Sound, music, voice acting, are all well done and fits the game nicely.
Really enjoyed this one.

This is one of those times where I'd love to be able to leave a neutral review.
Good things:
Great atmosphere.
Horror game done right without jump-scares, chase scenes and stealth gameplay.
Lovecraftian style.
Sound design + music.
Story is amazing.
Story pacing is spot on.
Bad things:
Clunky controls that makes the game super slow and can make you miss items and notes due to being too far away to be able to interact with them.
Puzzles that requires you to read the dev's mind - especially the text puzzles.
The text puzzle is a great concept, but the way it's done is really rough and even clues that'd make sense to be able to underline isn't, because the dev's didn't think they would be at the point in the story you're at, but later they will be(which is annoying when you as the player has figured things out before the main character).
Too much backtracking to check books/notes that the main character should've been able to carry with him.
So a mixed experience, but I'm ending up with a thumbs up since I really enjoyed the story, pacing and the Lovecraftian horror. I hope they'll improve their mechanics going forward as developers since their storytelling is brilliant.

Too slow for my taste. I don't understand the concept of the drag n drop 'thinking mechanism'. Seems like there are too many pointless steps involved. I didn't feel like a detective. Reading 8-10 page books over n over trying to find clues/meaning was annoying.
Graphics were good.
Story was rather good.
Sound effects were good.
