Developed by a team of experienced modders from the Paradox forum, Darkest Hour is a stand-alone Hearts of Iron game. The game features a mixture of short and in-depth campaigns set across the darkest chapters of the 20th century. Play from the outbreak of the Great War up until the onset of the Cold War.

Darkest Hour will introduce a new artificial intelligence that is now able to react to hundreds of different situations simultaneously. It implements a dynamic diplomatic system that will allow the player to have a real impact on the course of history.

nette Idee, mäßig umgesetzt...
Es ist eine Art Mod von Hearts of Iron 2...

- es behält sämtliche Macken und Fehler des Hauptspiels !!!
was in bestimmten Situationen einfach nur zum Haare raufen führt !!!
- es engt den Handlungsspielraum des Spielers derart ein, dass dies nur noch für Hardcore Fans was bringt
oder man fummelt selber an den Daten rum...
- es verursacht zuoft Speicherprobleme, also fehlerhafte Speicherstände die man entweder manuell bereinigen muss oder... aufgeben muss
- nunja.. und wenn man nicht dem genau strikten Vorgaben nachkommt... wirds langweilig weil außerhalb der Vorgaben eben nichts passiert...

Also nur für komplett Verrückte ist das hier geeignet, ich bin ein solcher und bin trotzdem des öfteren genervt und frage mich wieso ich mir das antue... vllt weil es einfach kein Spiel gibt welches strategisch den ersten Weltkrieg beinhaltet.. es gibt einfach keine Alternative ... määä

Aber hey, es steckt ne menge Arbeit dahinter und kann durchaus etwas für Zeitvertreib sorgen, dennoch kann ich es nicht weiterempfehlen, Hardgesottene interessiert das eh nicht und spielen das, alle anderen werden keinen Spaß haben XD

Ich bedauere es wirklich gerade einen Daumen nach unten zu geben. Das Spiel ist eines der besten in der Reihe und die Spieltiefe ist schon sehr ordentlich.

Den Frustfaktor welches jedoch das Balancing hinterlässt ist für mich zu hoch.

Ich habe einige Erfahrung in dieser Spielreihe aber hier kommt am Ende doch einiges zusammen.

Um es kurz zu machen, die AI ist in fast jeder Situation Overpowered OP.

Mein Beispiel mit Deutschland.

Ich war Anfang 1942 verbündet mit. Dänemark, Skandinavien (Norwegen Schweden) Finnland, Italien, Rumänien, Ungarn, Jugoslawien,Bulgarien, Griechenland, Osmanisches Reich, Iran, Irak, Ägypten, Spanien, Portugal, Deutsch-Polen, Reichskommisariat Niederlande, Wallonien, Flandern.

Ein Bündniss aus (Mit Deutschland) 20 Nationen (Keine Kleinen).

Frankreich, Schweiz, gesamt Nord Afrika und die Hälfte Ostafrikas waren erobert.

Dann kam der BIG HIT. Krieg mit der Sovietunion.

Ja es sollte eine Herausforderung werden welche ich gern angenommen habe. Was ich jedoch dann erleben durft widersprach allem was die Geschichte oder die Spielmechanik verständlich machen würde.

Derart überpowert um locker knapp 500 Divisionen aufzustellen. Mit einer durchschnittlichen Organisation von um die 60...

Ja die Rote Armee war Riesig, aber eben auch nicht so durchorganisiert.

Es gab nicht eine wirkliche Lücke, und glaubt mir, ich habe es mehrfach probiert.

Vom nördlichsten Punkt in Europa über die Ostsee bis zum schwarzen Meer, über die Türkische Grenze bis zum Östlichsten Teil der Iranische Grenze stand mir eine WAND gegenüber.

Das bedeutet dass die Sovietunion so viele Einwohner hatte wie alle oben erwähnten Nationen ZUSAMMEN und mehr.

Dazu die neuste Technik, oder zumindest Gleichwertig der deutschen aber IMMER Höherwertiger als Jeder verbündeter.

Ich habe niemals gegen eine Infanterie unter 39 gekämpft.

Leider einen Daumen herunter...

Ich bin durch Zufall auf die Hoi Reihe gekommen und wundere mich warum nicht schon eher, da ich mit Age of Empires usw aufgewachsen bin und dadurch alt genug wäre. Angefangen mit vielen Stunden Hoi4, noch mehr Stunden Hoi3 und nun Darkest Hour, muss ich sagen dass mir dieses Spiel am besten gefällt. Anfangs war ich wegen der Grafik abgeschreckt aber was Spieltiefe und Einflussmöglichkeiten betrifft ist dieses Spiel unerreicht! Es macht Spaß sich einzuarbeiten. Gerade wer das Hardcore Genre mag oder für sich entdeckt hat wird sehr viel Spaß haben.

Weniger Provinzen sind nicht störend, auch wenn ich Hoi3 mit den vielen Provinzen auch gut gefunden habe. Komfortfunktionen vermisst man zwar manchmal, aber darüber kann man hinwegsehen, auch neuere Spiele schaffen das oftmals nicht ordentlich.

Das gute, alte Darkest Hour. Was soll ich sagen? Die Grafik ist natürlich etwas in die Jahre gekommen, aber darüber kann man getrost hinwegsehen, während man versucht drei Fronten gleichzeitig zu verwalten.
Hier stehen viele Stunden taktieren, planen und kämpfen auf dem Plan, ehe man bemerkt, dass Italien mal wieder die Seite gewechselt hat und man Alt+F4 zu Rate zieht.

Für Hearts of Iron ein Review zu verfassen, ist nicht leicht. Jedes Spiel dieser Reihe ist so komplex, dass man ellenlange Absätze hinschmettern müsste, um einen wirklich umfassenden Eindruck vom Spiel zu vermitteln und eine Empfehlung geben zu können. Intensives selber testen ist in diesem Fall angeraten. ich werde mich relativ kurz halten, oder es zumindest versuchen.

Warum überhaupt ein Review zum zweiten Teil, wo die Ursprungsversion doch schon so alt ist und bereits zwei neuere Teile erschienen sind? Weil der zweite Teil der ist, der meiner Meinung nach am besten gelungen ist. Die Grafik ist natürlich nicht der Rede wert, im Prinzip sieht man eine Weltkarte im Brettspiel-Risiko-Stil vor sich. Einheiten werden als Sprites oder alternativ als Nato-Symbole dargestellt, Animationen gibt es nur wenige, trotzdem vermittelt das spiel einen guten eindruck vom Weltkriegsgeschehen. Der Sound ist okay, die Musikstücke reißen einen sicher nicht vom Hocker, ich empfand sie aber auch nach längerer Spielzeit nicht als nervig. Gameplaymäßig kann man Hearts of iron II nur als Monstrum bezeichnen. Forschung, spionage, diplomatie, Logistik usw usf. Das bieten viele andere spiele auch, jedoch nicht ansatzweise so komplex wie hier. Kleines Beispiel: Ihr habt für die Standardinfanterie neue, moderne Ausrüstung entwickelt. In anderen Strategiespielen sind die Einheiten automatisch aufgewertet oder sie werden kurzerhand per Ressourcen auf eine neue stufe gehoben. Hearts of Iron allerdings simuliert (mit etwas fantasie) die produktion der neuen Ausrüstung und deren Verteilung an die Truppen. Selbst große Nationen wie die USA oder Sowjetunion können diesen Aufwand nicht zeitnah stemmen. Manchmal erforscht man bereits neue Ausrüstung, noch bevor die Truppen überhaupt auf den stand der letzten Verbesserung gebracht wurden.

Dieses Beispiel steht symbolisch für den großen Managementanteil von hearts of iron. Jede entscheidung erfordert grundsätzliche Kenntnisse über die spielmechanik. man wird regelrecht erschlagen von den vielen Spielmachinken. Man ist ständig so beschäftigt, dass nicht einmal die dümmliche KI groß ins Gewicht fällt. Bei der Erklärung dieser scheitert Hearts of Iron meisterhaft, das meiste muss man sich selber beibringen und recherchieren. Für absolute Neuanfänger halte ich eine Einarbeitungszeit von einer Woche für realistisch, wenn jeden Tag ein paar Stunden gespielt wird. Der dritte Teil ist sogar noch umfangreicher und gefällt mir wegen dem hohen Mikromanagement-Anteil nicht, der vierte ist der bisher zugänglichste, ist mir als Fan der Spielreihe aber zu simpel geraten. Deswegen bekommt auch nur Teil 2 in der Darkest Hour-Version den Daumen nach oben von mir. Soweit ich weiß, gilt HoI2 unter Fans als bester Teil der Spielreihe, und ich kann mich dem nur anschliessen. Die Spieltzeit stimmt übrigens nicht ganz, ich habe tatsächlich um die 250 - 300 Spielstunden, da ich früher die Non-Steam-Version gespielt und dann mit der Complete Edition hier auf Steam weitergemacht habe

Und ein Tipp für Neulinge: solltet ihr euch tatsächlich an dieses epische spiel wagen, so empfehle ich eine Nation zu wählen, die maximal mittelgroß ist, nur eine kleine Armee und keine Bedeutung im zweiten Weltkrieg hatte. Das nimmt den Druck. Viele fangen gleich mit wichtigen Nationen wie Nazideutschland oder Großbritannien an und werden dann völlig vom mehrfrontenkrieg oder der kolonieverwaltung überrumpelt

Ich habe mich gegen Hearts of Iron 3 und für Darkest Hour entschieden. Jetzt, nachdem ich überlegt habe, ob ich mir HoI 3 nicht doch noch kaufe und mich dagegen entschieden habe, ist es an der Zeit, die Hand für Darkest Hour ins Feuer zu legen. Hier sind die Faktoren, die mich dazu bewegten:

*die Sprites sind schöner anzusehen als die NATO-Counter aus HoI 3. Man sieht Truppen marschieren, Flugzeuge Bombardements ausführen und Schlachten
*trotz des Alters der Engine sieht DH nicht so schlecht aus wie man vielleicht denken mag. die Entwickler haben Darkest Hour deutlich aufgehübscht; man könnte glatt vergessen, dass es ursprünglich aus HoI 2 entstand
*die erweiterte Zeitspanne macht das Einzigartige von Darkest Hour aus: der 1. Weltkrieg, eine oft unterschätzte und eigentlich nur in Victoria 1 dargestellte Epoche, lässt sich authentisch nachspielen oder beobachten. Auch die Technologie wurde diesem Szenario angepasst, und reicht z.T. zurück bis um 1870
*die Automatische Spionage, die sich bis ins Detail einstellen lässt. Man muss nichts mehr selbst in Auftrag geben, sondern kann seinen Spionen einfach sagen, was sie wie stark in welchem Land machen sollen
*unzählige historische Events, die einfach zu zahlreich sind, um alle zu kennen, machen das Feeling des Spiels aus. Egal ob kleine oder große Geschehnisse, die Events entführen den Spieler in die 20er oder 30er oder wann immer man sich gerade behauptet

Alles in Allem kann ich sagen, dass Darkest Hour ein meiner Meinung nach ziemlich unterschätztes Spiel ist. Es mag zwar weniger modern und einfach zu bedienen sein wie etwa Hearts of Iron 4, verdient aber dank seiner schlichten aber ergreifenden Einzigartigkeit einen Platz unter den großen Paradox-Titeln!

My most played game and basically my whole middle and high school years since my old PC couldn't run HOI 3 and HOI 4 so Darkest Hour will always have a special place in my heart and I'll even recommend it today. It's simpler than HOI 4 but yet I still have the same amount of fun as I did back then. Easily in my top 10 games of all time and I highly suggest trying it since it's always so cheap.

War game set during the period of the World Wars. Several scenarios to choose from, and different nations in each. A bit difficult to master, and the gameplay isn’t so easy to a rookie. But decent enough for a wargamer. Besides, it is a good test game for the series. Recommend.

From my ten hours of gameplay I can conclude this mod/game is solid. The attention to detail is fantastic and I like how you have to manage the economy resources reinforcements upgrades deploying troops, ships and planes among other things. The army can be rather irritating to handle sometimes and it can be rather complex but you should get used to it as you play more of the game. Would absolutely recommend buying over Hoi4

I have been playing this gem for nearly 10 years now. It's the perfect grand strategy game out there and the modding community is probably in the Top 10 amongst all games,
11/10, it never gets old.
BTW the engine works from reading data from excel spreadsheets. Simple but great.

This is the single best grand strategy game I have ever played and I've seen A LOT of them. I've started with EU2 and been on & off with Paradox titles for the better part of the last decade. The graphics are not up to todays standard, obviously, but they are not terrible - being 2D for the most part, which means they are not aging like milk. Crisp and colourful as they are already, you can easily enhance them with one of the easily accesible graphics pack. This game is moddable beyond belief, has its own (original!) version of Kaiserreich and the modding community is still suprisingly active for such an old game. If you like old-school grand strategy, you can't find anything better. This title is a true work of love.

One of my favorite Strategy games ever.

This is a Grand Strategy game that allows you to control any nation on certain set Dates. You may start during the following months leading to WW1, the Interwar Period (1933/1936) to various years during the Second world War (1939 - 1945). The game allows you to play until the late 60s if you choose to play a date from 1933 and onward.

You are roleplaying as the General Military complex of a nation. You have control of things you may expect in grand strategy game; diplomacy, industry, research, espionage and military organization.

Yes there are many historical events/diveregent event trees, that both player and AI choose between.

Recomendation: Choosing Italy or Japan during WW2 or Turkey/France during WW1

More realistic and intricate than HoI4, but not overly-complex like HoI3. Darkest Hour is a fine balance between the two and the best Hearts of Iron title available at the moment. The only downside is that the large province sizes make mechanised warfare unrealistic anywhere outside of Europe and North Africa

I am a HOI junkie from way-back. I fell in love with HOI3 and have mixed views on IV.
All that to say the DH is the best scripted scenario I have come across. Here is the only place that I have been able to attack Czech's and the Poles and keep world peace. The options are wide open now and I am not constrained to the historical East-West-East script.
Well done. Wish you did an updated version for III & IV.

Best hoi game I have ever played to be honest. The game is a lot more challenging than hoi4 but also has less micromanagement than hoi3. It's also cheap for its price since there are lots of great mods out there that add more scenerios to this already great game.

Unlike in Hearts of Iron IV, beating the AI in Darkest Hour is actually a challenge. The game is more complex and micro-intensive, but should be manageable for anyone who has played HOI4. The mechanics of government, technology, economy, and events/decision are more realistic and make Darkest Hour the better WW1/WW2 simulator. The only downside is the outdated and sometimes unappealing graphics, especially of the world map.

Excellent game! A real triumph of modding and imagination! I especially enjoy the extra starting date options offered. One can control a nation from 1933, or even 1914, allowing for almost endless variations on industrial and military development. Well done!

I enjoy the WW1 scenario and it also features the original Kaiserreich mod. Be warned however, the aged graphics are akin to the original Fallout game and I find it is harder to enjoy if you've played HOI3 or HOI4. Still give it a try if you are ok with playing a more dated strategy game.

The best HOI2 DLC game.
Enjoy it for a long time.
But please optimize the performance, just game performance is not as good as AOD.
To enjoy this game, you must prepare an old computer.
Plz!
It is unrealistic to add Chinese. After all, the original version does not have Chinese. You cannot ask DLC games to add it.
But for such an excellent game, I really hope that more people can enjoy it better.（If my wish can be fulfilled.）

right i love this game like i enjoy all the other games in the franchise but this game i noticed a glitch probably something in the files right Choose Britain 1914 ww1 dont go to war against Germany go against the ottomans you can easily push them aside they have weak troops no air force small navy as you conquer most of the country they accept peace from you which i didnt accept so tried again got as far as ankara they modern capital and the AI forces you to accept peace before you can annex them i tried this 3 times no luck not allowed to beat them but apart from that is a good game

Still do not understand how to properly value & utilize HQ's. Very slowly, partially, understanding, INTELLIGENCE. Is a Air Commander with the qualities of TANK BUSTER and/or strategic bombing aided in experience when using Tactical Bombers? If so how much? 100%? 50%? Whatever? Wish IN GAME ability to delete SAVES was present, as well as commanders. For sure I am ill adept in other matters but DH is only the BEST Paradox Historical Strategy I've played for in over 2 Decades.

This is a great game. The game mechanics are good, the soundtrack is good, I have found it pretty easy to conquer other nations, you can play both WW1 and WW2 and to top it off it is a MILLION times better than the broken Hoi4. This game is very historical. It is especially hard to win a the central powers if you play WW1. My favorite place to play in personally is China in any time period. Back to Hoi4, there are no annoying peace conferences, there are game breaking exploits I have seen, and the asthetic is better. The game is primative looking though. The game is VERY slow paced. The game time speed is very slow and I have not found any mods to speed it up. Other than this flaw it is pretty good. I rate a solid 9/10.

I have 250-something hours in this game, and it is truly worth every cent i payed for it. As Hoi4 can never hope to run on my system so this was my first hearts of iron game and i think its a good introduction for the series. It does have a steep learning curve and requires some mental capacity, but it is sorta simple when you look at it and its parts.

Some reviews say that the game is rather linear, that is sorta true at a glance depending on how you play. You can choose to play any nation at a variety of start dates and choose multiple paths to go down for your nation, (though not nearly as extensive as hoi4s foucus trees). there are options to go down alt-history in the base game, through the great number of events and decisions. they are limited though, it is impossible to have a communist USA for example, without the use of a little thing called console commands, which opens up alot of opportunities. make canada a fascist industrial powerhouse rivaling germany in might? you can do it, you can cheat your way through alot, but my advice is to use it only for developing minor nations or capitulating a already defeated enemy, or bypassing the script and creating your own scenarios.

The (land) combat in this game is amazing. launching massive operations months in the making, should you attack that province? are you divisions able to do it? if they fail will you be counter attacked or even worse encircled? you launch the attack anyway like the bullhead you are and watch in horror as the enemy brings in a tank division and you see the red numbers rise over the green, digital representations of your men being gunned down, the men you conscripted, trained, fed and led by you over the course of years, to die in this brainless attack, they whittle down your organization and repulse your attack, now they regroup and attack your positions, now the beachhead is going to be overrun. call in the air support...
should have prepared more, considered the terrain, and your shrinking manpower pool, is this worth it?

the thrill of the divisional scale combat is unmatched and well done, each division and support brigade has their own use. Unlike air combat, which i cannot handle for the life of me. does it really suck or am i the one that sucks, i do nothing against them with my upgraded bombers (with the all important doctrines)? Naval combat is sorta simmilar, but it has some depth beyond deathstack battleships, they are venerable things ships, keep some AA guns to protect them against planes, use deathstack fleets to defeat enemy fleets while using smaller fleets to protect your transports and your own shores. atleast thats how i do it, which is probably the wrong way (250hrs in).

The thing that keeps me playing is the story, or the story you build during your playthrough, with a great soundtrack, historical and ahistorical events you can find hours of replayability.

Overall id say its a great game, with some flaws i cant really say why, the graphics are a little dated but thats not really a problem. for new players id suggest a playthrough as either germany or the US, to get right into the action

The best HOI game so far. I find myself coming back to it over and over again. It is just the most straight-forward version I know. You build the unit type you want (Militia, Infantry, Mountaineer) with the brigades you would like to add. Sadly of course it is a bit outdated, and no new development is done on it, I will always be sad about the limited diplomatic solutions, but by far the most fun WW2 strategic game I know.

Still the best Hearts of Iron game to this date.Would recommend it to an experienced and new player(if you've never played a Hearts of Iron game I'd strongly recommend playing the tutorial before doing anything else).

Probably the best Hearts of Iron game to date. C.O.R.E. (Arsenal of Democracy) is there to challenge this title, but for me this is it. A beautiful map. The right feel. The right complexity. The AI is good enough to give you a fun time if you don't powergame from the start. If you like strategy and world war 2, this is one of the best games out there.

This version of Hearts of Iron is a gem. For the first I'm starting a WW! scenario (I didn'T even know we could). The learning of the game in details may be steep and playing it one game may requires SEVERAL hours, but reading all history events and learning about history and geography with it is really interesting. Addictive game!

It is a great game for those who are big fans of WW2. It is a mixture of action, thinking and fun. I just have one remark; it would be great to have better diplomacy, etc. white peace options, aliances that does not follow historical events, etc... 8/10

there is nothing like fighting in 1943 with vietnam era tanks, infantry and planes while the germans are using panzer 3s still

Geneuinely one of the best strategy games ever made. Easy to learn (compared to HOI 4 and HOI 3 a Microsoft Excel game) but impossible to master. Shame its built off of such an old ass game, so multiplayer is a nightmare.
