The prices for the souls games here on steam were all raised after the last major steam sale while there hasn't even been an attempt to update players on the plan for the servers.
Taking all of this in I cannot recommend any of these games because they are a husk of what they were with servers up.
Let me make this clear as well, I say this because they are now charging more for literally every souls game on steam right now than they have in years. What are you getting for these hiked prices? Less of a game than you would've gotten when you could've bought the whole series for the price of one game. That's just a bad deal if you ask me.
This series is my favorite game series period but I don't want to praise any aspect of these games without servers because that would just give Fromsoft more of an excuse to never bring the servers back.

I didn't bother with the Remaster since I had already 200 hours up on PTDE, but if you can't be bothered with modding, the Remaster is probably easier to get into. IDK. Commentators, enlighten me please.

DSFix improves the game in all sorts of ways.
For the Keyboard and Mouse Crusaders out there, get DSMFix (adds settings and customization for the mouse).
Now, on to the game.
Great game, recommend playing without guides so you feel utterly alone and confused. Very interconnected and intricately made. Sadly, some areas are story-locked. I fully recommend this MASTERPIECE.
too bad no one will see this review lmao

Well, anyway, I ditched this game for a few years because I thought I wouldn't like it and when my friend made to play it I simply fell in love. All I could think of was dark souls, for weeks. Dark souls, dark souls, dark souls. Took me like 100 hours to beat and it was worth it.
Imagine being remastered LO

Oh and of course Namco bandi is now removing the 50% off for owners of prepare to die edition as well. Because lets make people pay full price for a version of the game that people don't want.

When the abusive sexism supervisor started to invade my personal life, I quit the job. I couldn't handle it any longer, whatever it might be.
I felt depressed and dark, emotional something collapse inside me, like a flea-bag lying down somewhere.
I guess this is one of the reasons I love Dark Souls. It punishes you hard like despair, pushing you to the limit, and you tell yourself to keep going or give up, then back some times after, try again.
Just as life itself.
It is difficult.

It keeps crashing at startup now and none of the fixes work, but I'm sure it's a great game.

Yeah, do that.
I honestly thought they were not as silly as to completely block sales. All it took was a small, dedicated group of people to release a very impressive mod for me to redownload the game and notice. Now imagine if people could also still buy the game, it'd just sit there making money without the publisher having to do a thing other than pay taxes per sale while the community continued to work on it for free.
Oh well, back to my cave. Had to throw my complaint in the internet abyss...

+ Enemy design is amazing, specially the bosses
+ Highly replayable
+ Memorable soundtrack
+ Gorgeous art-direction
+ Exploration is rewarding
+ DLC
+ Hidden areas
+ Huge amount of content
Cons:
- Bad port (can be fixed)
- Some late-game areas are bland

“Long” version:
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is an RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment.
You play as a cursed undead and must fight your way through perilous lands and monsters to achieve your goals (which I will not spoil).
Dark Souls has a refreshing take on storytelling. It does not spell things out for players – it utilizes NPC dialogue to give you clues about what happened and the part you are playing in all of it. There is also plenty of lore in item descriptions and, most impressively, visual storytelling – areas are filled with subtle bits of story.
The world-building is just mind-blowing. You will experience completely different areas with their own beauties and horrors and they all feel different.
Something that surprised me during my first playthrough was how organically interconnected the world actually is. Opening a door that leads to an earlier area and which will save you a considerable amount of time and resources is very satisfying and the game is filled with these shortcuts. Seriously, it is bordering on gameplay perfection (which we will talk about after this) – you are out of healing items, you are almost dead and, suddenly, there it is, a shortcut to a previously visited place you can use to regain your HP and items. Not only will you be back to full health, you can now use that shortcut to start exploring from there. This allows you to explore juuuuust a bit further and discover new areas.
Some end-game zones are a bit uninspired when compared to the earlier areas and you also get to fight too many variations of earlier bosses at some point.
Onto gameplay.
Let us get this out of the way first – the game is hard. Everyone knows that. The thing is that it is also fair (for the most part). In order to stay alive, you must learn enemy attack patterns and time your dodges, parries and attacks correctly.
There are a few exceptions to this –
the archers in Anor Londo are cheap, have high impact arrows that make you fall to your death and they are super far away from the bonfire; it’s not challenging, it’s downright unfair when you pair it up with the invisible walls on the roofs and surfaces you can slide off of. Also, Blighttown is a clusterf*ck of every single annoying mechanic in gaming – you get slowed down, you get poisoned, you can easily fall to your death and it is hard to see enemies and platforms.
These are few and far between so, in the grand scheme of things, it is fine.
Gameplay is divided into combat and exploration. Exploration is serviceable – while your movement is somewhat responsive, it feels a bit too clumsy at times. You can easily run off ledges because there is an invisible wall on a platform and your character just slides off of it or you can randomly fall off the map. These spots/situations are few and far between and in very specific spots in the game but they are present and should be considered when reviewing. There is also “light” platforming, where you are required to jump from one place to another, mostly for items, but the whole mechanic is unpolished and feels gimmicky. It is one of the few mechanics I feel like has aged poorly.
Combat is a bit more nuanced. You have your usual light/heavy attack, you can dodge and parry.
You can attack using a myriad of weapons – swords, bows, spears, shields, wands, etc. They all require different strategies and builds and you can certainly mix and match to suit your playstyle. While not all weapons are “good”, most can be successfully used (the pros would say everything is viable but I am reviewing this for an average Joe, such as myself). I started out with a dexterity build and I wanted to use a bow with a spear as a secondary – while it is certainly doable, it is not that enjoyable. You shoot slowly, you cannot move while aiming, you deal pitiful damage and must purchase arrows all the time. I got through more than half of the game before I started using the spear as my primary weapon (
Capra Demon was a b*tch to kill with the bow
). Anyways, the game will most likely accommodate your playstyle as long as you do not go full archer build.
Armor also affects how you play. Lighter armor does not protect you as much from attacks but it makes you nimbler, consumes less stamina when dodging and makes you dodge faster, for example (although a so-called fat roll is a thing of beauty).
You can cast spells too (healing, damage, buffs) – it is hard to get behind spellcasting at first – the approach to magic is a peculiar one. It is perfectly capable after you understand it but it is confusing at first.
You can also parry (and block) some enemy attacks but I am a scrub and was terrible at it so… Moving on!
In order to regain HP, refill your hp items and, most importantly, level up, you must rest at bonfires. These also act as respawn points and are rare enough to make exploration risky – hence me saying that finding a shortcut (or just a bonfire in general, to be honest) feels like a gift from the gods.
Every enemy and boss you defeat will grant you souls, that act as currency to level up and purchase items. Whenever you die, you lose all souls and get a single chance to get them back. If you manage to return to where you died and interact with your dropped souls, you will get them back. If you die, however, they are lost forever. While it is certainly bound to happen a few times and it is definitely frustrating, you will be able to avoid it if you play carefully and spend your souls before bosses and new areas.
There are also item drops from both enemies and bosses that can give weapons and armor pieces – boss souls allow you to craft unique, awesome weapons that are super useful or used for a large amount of souls.
Graphically, most areas area beautifully designed. It is not that the graphics are amazing by today’s standards but everything looks detailed and convincing. Sewers look gross, environments such as castles and fortresses look decrepit, forests look deceivingly peaceful and mysterious. Just wonderful.
Sound-wise, Dark Souls features a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. Sound effects are good. Some weapons have an awesome crunch to them and the bosses’ sound design is epic.
This version of the game also comes with extra DLC content and, again, it is outstanding. One of the fights, in particular, is super memorable and challenging.
Finally, I must say this port is terrible. You must get fixes in order to get it running properly and in case you want to experience playing with and against other players. I experienced multiplayer for a bit and it was not for me – plenty of cheaters and high-level players.
So yeah, with Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition you will be getting tons of good content behind a messy port that can, fortunately, be fixed. Once you finally get it running it is a wonderful experience, for the most part. Some areas and mechanics are a bit cheap or have aged poorly, but most of it is masterful. The game does not hold your hand at all and you are required to do some research to unlock some of the content and understand some of its mechanics. If you give it a chance, however, it is a truly unique experience that really shows that a game does not have to be flawless to be an enjoyable ride.
Final score: 8 out of 10.

My only complaint would be that I'd like a soulsborne-type game but with a science fiction / futuristic fantasy setting instead of pseudo-historical fantasy.

I know it´s tiresome and unoriginal and it has been said ad nauseam, but this game is a masterpiece, I really don´t know how else to put it.
Revisiting the game after many years of my first playthrough, I still get that sense of wonder and adventure with an enthralling and masterly crafted world, even with all its flaws it is such a gratifying experience. There´s nothing quite like it.
Arguably one of the most influential and best games of its generation, and truly one of those experiences that one will never forget.

Now that Dark Souls Remastered is out, the only reason to get this is if you can't get DS:R or want to see the beginning of the Souls-like mechanics, before the refinement and polish of Dark Souls 2 and 3.
This game defined the Dark Souls series' challenge/reward scale. It's largest downfalls are the clunky camera during a couple parts in Anor Londo, the blinding bloom applied to the lava of the Demon Ruins, and the guaranteed framerate drop ailing Blighttown. These issues have been fixed in Remastered, mind you.
