A nicely presented game reminiscent of various NES-games like Blue Shadow, Ninja Gaiden and to a degree Mega man. Good music and graphics. Fairly high difficulty with occasionally evil checkpoint placement, though that gives a nice sense of relief when you complete a difficult section. While hard, the game is very fair with telegraphed attacks, taking damage feels like it is due to your own mistakes — that is not to say it didn't piss me off quite a bit at times though. Has a serviceable story that isn't overbearing.

A fantastic game that feels like the perfect love letter to NES era action platformers like Ninja Gaiden. The game is tough enough that you can't breeze through it but not so tough that it falls into frustration. The music throughout is fantastic and really fits with the cyberpunk world and gets you pumped up for those tough boss fights. I think just about every boss has an achievement for beating them a certain way and I definitely see me going back to the game soon to try to knock out some of those challenges. I would definitely call this game money well spent and would have been happy even had I paid full price.

My final clear time was just under 9 hours for 100% item collection and I had just under 300 deaths. I don't think that's too bad for a first run and love when games give you stats like that at the end. I can definitely see this being a cool game to speedrun too.

Stepping out from the Shadow of its Predecessors

Is it possible to feel nostalgia for an era of gaming you never grew up with? 'Cause this game absolutely nails everything that made NES classics such as Ninja Gaiden, Shadow of the Ninja and Mega Man 2 so great, while mitigating the frustration associated with those games. Well… as best as a modern take on them can anyway. That doesn't make Cyber Shadow any less hard as balls however, with more punishing checkpoints, hitboxes, insta-kill spikes and cracked NES boss fights than I was expecting. It IS a more confident and fully featured spiritual successor to those classics though, a feat that is easier said than done.

Bit Wars

In a similar vein to other fantastic modern-retro throwbacks such as The Messenger and Shovel Knight, the pixel art presented here simply oozes with style and personality. Walking the line between 8 and 16-bit graphics they serve both the level design and hazard perfectly, demonstrating the devs' firm understanding of the genre as a whole. From the balance of enemies, obstacles and items to the core movement and abilities, your character just manages to flow effortlessly through these visually stunning and unique stages, all along to an absolute BOPPING soundtrack mind you.

Gameplay

While there aren't many abilities at your disposal, you can do a LOT with those few and they feel both responsive and satisfying to pull off, when they work…The parry and dash strike may be a bit fiddly for my liking, the parry window in particular being very narrow while also being mapped to the same input as moving forward (→). That could just be me though. I should probably learn to GIT GUD as I’ve seen some amazing speedruns using the mechanic. With several minibosses and bosses being designed (or at least made easier) around the use of parries, the feature feels kind of inconsistent and I would have liked an option to rebind it to a more intuitive layout..

For the space in-between bosses, the game poses a wide variety of enemies and obstacles for you to tackle. There are enemies solely based to test your aerial, ground and projectile based abilities with some requiring a combination of the three to challenge your use of the power-ups you’ve gathered up to that point. If you are planning on going for 100%, the game requires you to backtrack to previous stages in order to mop up the last HP and SP upgrades with newly acquired abilities, offering a slight amount of exploration to previously linear stages. If this is sounding a lot like Metroidvania with the power-ups, upgrades and slight backtracking, I’m probably overselling it. The Messenger does much better in this department.

Conclusion

If you're into these kinds of retro throwback platformers, then Cyber Shadow is for you as a very polished and refined iteration of the classic Ninja Gaiden formula. There are no twists, no unnecessary gimmicks, just incredible 2D action from start to finish which I can’t really fault. If you’re playing this for the story or greater lore then you’re looking in the wrong place as this game’s narrative has the depth of the most average NES game, which could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how you look at it. Just don’t expect any boundary breaking features not seen within this genre. There are plenty more games out there that have done just that, some of which I’ve listed in this very review. All in all, when you take into account everything Cyber Shadow does right, it may just be one of the best 2D action games of 2021.
After Metroid Dread ofc.
Only took me until 2022 to play it.

A sideways thumb.
Cyber Shadow is a captivating and challenging modern game that chose to make those old school mechanics work, instead of blindly recreating the artificial difficulty of the infamous console hits. If one decides s/he wants to create a game that plays and works better than those ancient NES relics while giving off a distinct retro platformer vibe, one can actually succeed. CS’s pacing, the enemy patterns, the level layout and the bosses are a beautiful example of that. It plays great.

What stops me from wholeheartedly recommending it (despite the 15+ hours of fun it gave me) is the very last(!!!) set of 3 vertical levels right before the final boss fight. It is the only section in the game that fully relies on the “press down + attack at the correct opening to bounce off the enemy in the air” gimmick. It’s as horrendous as you’d expect.

A great retro-style platformer on nearly every front. I haven't written any reviews before though from what I understand this game is a bit underappreciated so I figured I'd throw in my support.

The game starts out with standard NES Ninja Gaiden style pacing and eventually supercharges your completed moveset in a manner that allows you to speed and chain-dash through levels if you're skilled enough. I would not only say that the game captures the Ninja Gaiden feel but a bit smoother, but Shadow has one of my favorite movesets to control out of any character I've played in a sidescrolling platformer. I've seen some complaints about the controls, such as not being able to crouch, though personally I haven't had much of any complaints with the controls myself. The worst I can say is that parrying being set to double tapping the dpad can be slightly awkward at times, especially if you leave double tap to dash enabled. The most frustrating aspects of the NES Ninja Gaiden games are generally remedied, with Cyber Shadow featuring much more fair enemy placement and very accommodating checkpoints.

As someone experienced with platformers I personally found the game to be balanced pretty solidly. I don't think there were any sections that I found to be notably very difficult, though I wouldn't say the game was overly easy, having plenty of sections where I'd have to watch my movement.

In terms of presentation, very nice dark spritework combine with a pretty enjoyable story and some of my favorite chiptune music I've heard in a while to construct a very strong atmosphere for an NES style game. Just about every boss fight has unique music which is very cool.

I know this game tends to be compared to The Messenger, though that game takes a Metroidvania approach where Cyber Shadow is a traditional sidescroller platformer, generally having you deal with hazards and enemies at a faster pace as a result. If you enjoy retro style sidescrolling platformers I would definitely recommend you check this game out, and even if you're not too experienced with them I feel that Cyber Shadow is accommodating enough to newer players.

This developer definitely seems to have a strong grasp on what makes a game fun and I'm very interested in seeing what they may have in store for the future, especially if I get to use a moveset like Shadow's again.

Given its newness and price point (not to mention some of the reviews), I waited a full year before buying Cyber-Shadow, and now my only regret is that it took me so long to try it. What with the sale on now, I wanted to put in a good word for the game and respond to some of the more negative reviews (notwithstanding those written about a previous version). In this game, the design is tight and considered, not unfair: the weakened protagonist's limitations at the outset make it more akin to Mega Man 2 - X than to Ninja Gaiden, and the enemy designs, stage hazards, and bosses all attest to that. The game does demand that you git gud, and that can mean lots of trial and error, but with the steady delivery of cool powerups and even cooler abilities, it's totally worth it. The graphic and audio artistry is something to behold, making you feel like you're witnessing the evolutionary pinnacle of the NES that could never have happened in its time (I recommend letting the title theme loop several times while gazing deeply into the screen to fully understand this effect). Yes, the writing is often very awkward (not that writing is required at all in this kind of game), but there is a strangely authentic, mistranslated-in-the-80s quality even to that. The unfavourable comparisons being made to Shovel Knight (a very fine game) are only by virtue of the shared publisher, and to The Messenger (also a very fine game) only because ninjas. Taken on its own, Cyber-Shadow is a real delight for anyone with the required patience and skill.

Bottom Line:

Overall an enjoyable Platformer that’s worth giving a go, just know what you’re signing up for as Cyber Shadow channels it’s NES Ancestors!

Gameplay:
Controls feel tight and precise, you jump and slash! Not sure what else to say here, character weight and jump distance feels spot on. Levels are primarily linear with hidden paths and secrets to explore and upgrades to find, with a new powerup being added nearly every chapter to keep things fresh.
Now lets’ be real here: The game can be difficult, more forgiving that it’s inspirations like Ninja Gaiden, but probably a step up from your average platformer (e.g. Shovel Knight). The enemies are contra-like enemies can home in on you or fire tricky projectiles, damage can deal knockback [strike](usually into that spike pit right beside you)[/strike] and there’s not a lot of invincibility-frames.
However Like it’s inspirations, it’s nothing that can’t be overcome with a bit of persistence, patience, and infinite continues. By the endgame everything clicks as your powers are increased and your comboing through enemies and zipping from screen to screen!

Presentation:
Pixel perfection! Gorgeous sprite work that really nails the cyber-dark future aesthetic. Special mention to the various Shrines and the game’s title screen cutscene. (I NEED this art on my wall!)

Story:
While on a surface level the story is straightforward, there is further depth hidden in various terminals and secrets, with information that leaves a trail of breadcrumbs for further worldbuilding. there’s quite a bit that can be pieced together about events prior to the game.

Music:
Pentadrangle really nailed this one, a spectacular soundtrack the compliments the stages very well, and oh lawd the boss tracks! My only complaint is that as of this time of writing the soundtrack still hasn’t been released (guys please it’s been 10 months)

Final thoughts:
For the developer’s first outing with the majority of the game developed solo, this is a noteworthy and impressive debut, I look forward to seeing where they go from here.

It's a game themed after the NES Ninja Gaidens that's tough but fair the whole way through. The level design is quite good, and with infinite lives and fairly frequent checkpoints it rides the line of being tough but manageable quite well, with the traditional NES style difficulty of tough bits buffered by easier bits with appropriate levels of midlevel health to keep you going without the NES style bulls**t. It starts a little rough, with an anemic life bar and nothing but your sword, but around stage 3 you start getting a lot more upgrades and the game starts pulling punches without going totally easy on you before ramping up gradually.

The game has a weird sort of setup where each level is connected into one big world, but you only have fast travel at stage transitions and none of the bosses respawn so all that is good for is occasionally going back to a few worlds with new powers for upgrades you missed.

As you proceed the game hands you powers, shurikens, pogo jumps, and eventually at the halfway mark a dash and a parry. The dash is contentious for good reason; The dash first needs to be reconfigured to whatever your muscle memory used for a DKC or Mario run as the double tap is the wrong binding. Second, once you get the dash, the platforming starts expanding out the X-axis to make use of your speed, but any attack while dashing is a teleport dash strike that, sometimes, gives you a lot of flexibility in movement and attack but, most of the time, sends you plummeting onto spikes. This stays aggravating to the end credits and I feel that the game would have been better off focusing on the core default speed movement platforming but the game is 3-5 hours long so I guess we needed a change by that point. The parry allows you to, if you tap the d-pad toward the attack at the right time, reflect any projectile. This move is vital for most encounters through the rest of the game. It's a little annoying when you whiff it but it is otherwise manageable.

The game also includes a wide variety of clever cheevos rewarding you for doing parts of the game fairly stylishly but, I'm going to be honest here, a good chunk of them are pretty ridiculous. For instance, one asks you to clear the first level without killing a single enemy. Obnoxious enough because enemies will not despawn if you simply scroll past them but then it requires damage tanking tech to get past a couple of midboss enemies without being knocked back for longer than your invulnerability lasts. Sure, this is clever, but it is not remotely fun. Fortunately these are all just optional but still a little insulting that you are asked to do something so asinine.

Through all this is a fairly elaborate story of ninjas fighting robots and trying to stop a scientist (who did nothing wrong) from saving his daughter. The writing is not an afterthought but it does not waste your time. Plus the music and art are great too.

By the last act of the game I was really itching for it to end as the game started going hard on the stunt platforming over spikes and instant kill pits while swarms of robots stalk you but at the end of it all I had fun. While it was tough, the checkpoints were generous enough to soothe the pain and the game carefully avoided throwing too much obnoxious nonsense at you. I've never played a NES Ninja Gaiden and I don't think any of them have been as fair as this game. To that end, I recommend this game for anyone in the market for tough, classic platforming. This game is hugely underrated for what it is. For a dollar to quality and dollar to hour value, this game is absolutely top tier. The dev put far more work in it than needed and deserves great praise for that.

I love Cyber Shadow, and it has the potential to be really great! the physics are pitch-perfect, the difficulty is absolutely scalding (in a good way!) and i like how it blended in the story elements- most of the story is conveyed through optional interactions you can skip on repeat playthroughs, or if you just want to skip the story for some reason. While I'm generally getting a bit bored of 8-bit styles in modern games, I can't deny that this game looks and sounds phenomenal! Not only are the graphics and sound design fun and memorable, but it's also designed to be easy to read, even at this game's breakneck pace. Unlocking special moves (powerful abilities that require a resource, SP, in order to be used) allows the game to build up the complexity throughout the campaign, slowly but surely turning you into a Cyber Shadow Master!

However, I really believe that the controls could use some more customization options. Cyber Shadow leans heavily on NES-era design, especially in its controls. Essentially, you have the D-Pad, plus three other buttons- sprint, jump, and attack. Using those special moves I mentioned earlier is done with the context-sensitive attack button. This is annoying enough in the early game- accidentally throwing a shuriken or fireball and wasting SP can be annoying- but there's two moves that really stand out and drag this game down.

One is the cross-slash attack: once you receive the ability to sprint, pressing the attack button (the one you're using all the time to just swing your sword, remember) suddenly has the ability to fling you halfway across the screen, and potentially into one of the numerous instant-death traps. Attacking at top speed suddenly goes from second nature to a massive gamble, unless you've already died a dozen times and you know that part of the level like the back of your hand.

The other is the parry. You have to tap the D-Pad in the direction of an incoming projectile with the most ridiculously precise timing I think I've ever seen in a game like this. Not only that, but the affected area is still very unclear to me, even after 18 hours. Especially since the parry is controlled with the D-Pad, which means Shadow will be moving while you try to perform it, which makes the distance even harder to judge. While I can understand the cross slash, this just makes no sense to me- i have no idea what developer or beta tester played this game and decided that this was acceptable for a core mechanic. If it had been a separate button, it would instantly be 300% more usable.

I understand that this game is trying to emulate the control style of NES games like Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, but it's too complex for that. And, for the record, I love complexity in games, but only when it can be reliably supported by the control scheme. If you want to emulate an older generation of games for nostalgia's sake, fine. But there's a very good reason Nintendo gave the SNES more buttons compared to its predecessor- to support advanced games like this one! The developer(s) made the right choice in giving players the option to use a dedicated sprint button, and now I'd really like to see that expanded to the reflect and special moves.

Let me be clear that I love this game. While I had some problems controlling it, I'd definitely give it a try, because it really is great fun if you like a challenge. The only reason I wrote such a long review was in the hopes that the game could hopefully be improved if this review finds its way to the developer. But, even if that never happens, I don't regret my purchase- these issues don't ruin the game for me. I'm really looking forward to what happens with the developer and with the publisher next.

Solid 8 / 10

Gameplay takes some heavy inspiration from Ninja Gaiden (NES) and has plenty of original mechanics to give itself an identity of its own. The music is awesome too. Some of the people leaving negative reviews have understandable complaints, but most of them are just bad at the game.

Ignore all these weak, crying babies. This is old school difficulty and old school fun. Take it from an 80s kid. It's not too difficult; they just don't have the patience and persistence to get better and overcome. Clearly they are not ninja material. The eternal dragon spits on them.

Excellent tough-as-nails platformer with an engaging story and plenty of amazing sprite work / music.

Controls felt mostly tight, but I did have quite a bit of trouble getting the dash slash to work reliably in the middle of boss fights. Though part of that was maybe my problem.

Would love to see some updates in the future.

Oh and if you're having a hard time choosing between this and the Messenger, they're different enough that you'd probably enjoy both.

Cyber Shadow basically feels like another entry in the Ninja Gaiden series of old. Playing it feels not like playing one of them, but how it feels in my memories of how it was playing Ninja Gaiden 3 as a kid. Great controls, awesome pixel graphics, large boss monsters, and many frustrating sections, but beating each of them also feels exhilarating. I say how it feels like because in many ways it brings a lot of creature comforts the old games didn’t have. Many save spots that alleviate the most frustrating spots (though there are still enough, especially in later levels to not feel too easy).

The move set is expanded with various specials you learn along the way, though sadly some of the moves feel badly implemented. There’s just something off about the downward slash that makes it hard to consistently pull off (something which became extremely annoying close to the end with a section where you need to be able to do it to proceed forward, or upward), parry is almost entirely useless and the dash isn’t all that good either. At least double jump is no problem, but the other moves all feel awkward to deploy and just aren’t much fun to use.

But given, it’s a large platformer with many and varied levels where you can explore for countless secrets its hard not to enjoy. You can even backtrack between levels to find stuff later if you missed something. And the core gameplay is just extremely enjoyable. There are sections where you go into cyberspace to unlock doors, these were fun too. The boss designs are really neat and once you learn how to beat them, and there’s usually a way to do it, feels very satisfying.

Overall, despite its various frustrations, it’s a game I utterly loved to play, a callback to a great game of my youth that makes me remember what was so great about playing it while putting in enough modern touches to not make it as much of a chore and it just looks utterly stylish. There’s are lots of pixel games out there these days, but few manage to look so good, few manage to pin so perfectly old NES visuals.

This game was a real gem for the most part. Engaging level design, an unexpectedly interesting story, dead-on visuals and an obvious appreciation for its source material made this a lot of fun to play.

There are some control quirks I disliked - the parry never quite feels precise enough, and the sprinting slash got me killed something like four times in the last boss fight because it came out when I didn't intend to use it (likely a result of the double-tap-to-dash mechanic.)

Still, if you're a fan of 2d action platformers, NES games, or even a good fusion of cyberpunk and supernatural storytelling, you should pick this up. It's a steal.

I was at first skeptical about buying this game. Lots of people talking about how difficult it is and how it is just frustratingly tough. As someone who doesn't like difficult games, I was feeling this wasn't for me.

However, the game is not really tough. I mean its hard, but every section can be beaten in 4-5 tries. Same for the bosses. Also the controls are fine. You get more abilities as the game progresses, once you are well versed with the basic abilities. Please don't quit it in the first 2 hours. The game gets really cool as you progress.

Highly enjoyable game!

Awesome game, but really really hard. People who think Cuphead is hard, Cuphead has nothing on this game. Regardless it is really awesome and has a great storyline. I wish it would be more well known than Shovel Knight though.

I had a mostly positive experience, but it took a bit to become positive.
Starting off I was getting bored while going through the first 4 or so stages because of the lack of options. I kept going because I knew there was a parry ability later and I wanted to try it out.
As I expected, with the parry and then dashing, double jumping and the ability to charge attacks I got much more engaged.
Still, all of that comes so late into the game. By the time you get everything the game is already 3/4 done.

But what really baffles me is the lack of a NG+ mode... Getting to start over with all the abilities unlocked would give this game quite a bit more of play time.
I finished it in 3 hours 54 minutes by playing casually, exploring levels for upgrades and reading all the dialog and lore around. That's a pretty short time.

Some later stages can get a little bit annoying due to checkpoints being spread too far. And on the topic of checkpoints: what's up with the different unlocks for each of them?
Basically most checkpoints only restore health, but you can pay some currency to make them also replenish the special meter and to give a sub weapon. My confusion comes from why does this currency even exist? All you can do with it is unlock stuff from checkpoints. Wouldn't it have been a better system to just let the player unlock each thing based on the amounts of deaths since they passed said checkpoint? Maybe 1 death let's you unlock the special replenish, and 3 more deaths let's you unlock the sub weapon. I leave it to player discretion if they want to unlock the help or not just in case some want to keep pushing without any help until they beat the section.

Oh, and the bosses were a bit too easy. They either have too few attacks so its easy to adapt to them, or they follow a very simple pattern.

I still recommend it because it's (eventually) a fun game with tight controls, nice retro graphics and cool music. My only issue with the controls was the dash also being bound to double tapping forward, which conflicts with trying to parry several projectiles in a row, but there is an option to turn off the dashing with double tap forward.

I hope to see a NG+ mode added in the future, though! =)

Quite a bit disappointed I have to say. I think I may have expected a bit too much from this one. There are several other indie titles that are much more engaging.

Cyber Shadow has got to be one of the best Ninja Gaiden inspired games I have played in years.

At its core Cyber Shadow is an action adventure game with some light metroidvenia elements added in to the mix, which results in a smooth learning curve of the various skills as you go through this 6-8 hours long game.

In short I highly recommend this game to anyone that is a fan of the old Ninja Gaiden series or Yacht Club Games previous title: Shovel Knight.

Summarized version below!

We usually get a few Ninja Gaiden-inspired games released each year, but the problem is that many of them just come off as barebones, hardly enough to compare to the classic. So, I went into Cyber Shadow wondering how it would measure up to the rest.

Gameplay:

The inspiration behind Cyber Shadow is very clear. Not just with Ninja Gaiden, but with NES game design in general, pulling from other classics like Mega Man and even a bit of Castlevania. However, it loses that NES stiffness in the process, offering some more responsive controls and movement. For example, you’re not locked into a direction when jumping – you can freely move around when in the air and even do dash attacks back and forth without touching the ground.

The overall combat has a similar feel to it. It is simple, but it is fast, polished, and incredibly satisfying, especially once you’ve got all of the abilities to work with. You start out with just your basic attack, but eventually get ranged attacks, rising attacks, airstrikes, and even parries. That may not sound like a lot, but using all of these effectively can take some getting used to, at which point the combat really shines. This same style of progression can be seen with the movement, such as the unlockable dash attack and wall slide that not only help with combat, but with exploration as well.

And on the topic of that exploration, there’s a nice of touch of it to the level design. Hidden walls, secret rooms, and even Mario-style out of level paths, the game has a good amount of hidden stuff to find. The level design in general though has some nice variety to it, taking you from a city overrun by robots to the depths of a reactor and then back to the docks for a fight on top of the water.

Each of these comes with their own matching boss fight, fights that are both challenging and unique in their own way. This same kind of variety can be seen with the enemies too. Ranged, melee, divebombing, there’s a good amount there and definitely enough that at least one will bring you pain whenever you see it.

Difficulty:

I was actually tricked at first, because I was breezing through the first third or so of the game and was like “is this really it?” only for that difficulty to steadily ramp up as the game went on and reach very high levels by the end of it. At that point, I was getting absolutely slapped by certain rooms, some of which don’t even look that difficult on the surface until you’ve actually played them. This all culminates at the final boss, easily the hardest part of the game for me, but a satisfying sendoff once I finally managed to beat it. The game isn’t entirely evil though, there are checkpoints offered throughout and you don’t have to restart the entire game like a lot of the NES classics had you do.

Length/Replayability:

The dev placed it at 4-10 hours and I can confirm this as it took me 6 hours to clear. That doesn’t include 100% completion though, which will likely take much longer given that several of those achievements require you to do stuff like “kill this boss without using your sword” or “reach this area without killing any enemies.” The game has a touch of metroidvania to it in that you can go back to previous levels and explore them using your new abilities, which in turn allows you to reach previously unreachable secret areas. Outside of that achievement hunting though, there really isn’t any replayability.

Story:

The story is mainly told through text-based cutscenes, but also character dialogue and notes scattered about the levels. As the game goes on, it leans more and more on those scattered notes and logs to tell the story, which was a bit disappointing, but again, there’s only so much you can do with an NES aesthetic like this. I personally found it pretty boring and an interruption to the otherwise solid gameplay, but it is there for those interested, just don’t expect anything too spectacular.

Visuals/Audio:

As with the game design, Cyber Shadow takes on that classic NES-era look, with pixel graphics and all. As someone that has played a lot from that era, I can definitely say that this would be one of the better-looking ones. The sprites are nicely done, the color choices are solid, and the backgrounds are surprisingly detailed given the limitations of the aesthetic.

It does this with a bit of a modern touch though, mainly through its parallax backgrounds and much smoother animations than what you would find in an NES game. It also ran perfectly at 1440p and 144 fps, really giving those pixels the modern look. Then there’s the music on top of that. It’s certainly not the best I’ve heard from such games, but it’s definitely not bad and really fits that “cyberpunk ninja”-kinda aesthetic the game goes for.

Controls:

Cyber Shadow offers both keyboard and controller options. There aren’t too many controls to the game, but both options are fully rebindable and I found no issues when testing either of them – although I personally found the controller to be the better fit.

Overall:

So with all of that said, I would recommend Cyber Shadow. It’s an incredibly well-polished NES throwback, with fun combat, responsive controls, and some nice art and music backing it up. The level and enemy variety keeps the experience from going stale during the six or so hours that it lasts and there’s a good amount of content for completionists to do on top of that. If you’re fan of these NES-inspired games, you’re probably gonna have a good time here, just don’t go in expecting it to be a breeze.
