Cry of Fear is a psychological single-player and co-op horror game set in a deserted town filled with horrific creatures and nightmarish delusions. You play as a young man desperately searching for answers in the cold Scandinavian night, finding his way through the city as he slowly descends into madness. With a strong emphasis on cinematic experience, immersion and lateral thinking, players will be taken on a nightmare rollercoaster-ride through the grim streets of Fäversholm and beyond. Not everything is as it seems...

Cry of Fear originally started out as a Half-Life 1 modification, set in the same vein as the classic survival horror games of old. 4 years in the making and picking up several modding awards on the way, it is now a free, standalone game for anyone to enjoy. Beware though, it's not for the faint of heart.

Obwohl dieses Spiel schon echt alt ist, hat es einen sehr hohen Gruselfaktor und eine interessante Story. Vorallem das Ende, aber ich Spoiler nicht :)
Seit Ihr für ein dunkles, nervenaufreibendes und actiongelandenes Horrorgame dieses Kaliber bereit, dann ist das genau für dich!

Eines der besten Horrorspiele überhaupt. Ich habe es damals gespielt und jetzt spiele ich es noch einmal. Das Spiel macht richtig Laune. Also keine gute Laune, ihr wisst was ich meine. Das Spiel empfiehlt sich, es im Dunkeln zu spielen. Ansonsten, ist dieses Spiel das beste KOSTENLOSE Horror Spiel überhaupt. Es braucht das Half Life Spiel nicht. Es funktioniert auch so. Ich kann bestätigen, dass es auch auf Windows 10 funktioniert. Danke an die Entwickler für so ein tolles Spiel und das auch noch umsonst.

First of all, this is the most faithful game to the Silent Hill series without being a Silent Hill game. Secondly, this is probably one of the scariest games I have played in 10 years. Top notch atmosphere, game play, and visual style. 9.9 out of 10. I deduct .1 because of some minor glitches.

The game shows mental health problems in a unique way. There're some jumpscares and times when devs play with breaking doors in front of You just to spawn enemies behind You or spawn enemies next to You when You switch areas with a loading screen. The engine is old and save system can be a bit frustrating when You die and have to repeat 20min sequence carefully. Devs handmade animation of going up/down the ladder and some destruction animations as well. I played on a difficult setting and I died a lot but the amount of heart and work put into the game as well as the story take on the mental health really made it worth playing. I came here from Pyrocynical video and even though I rewatched it 3/4 times, every time I did I just wanted to play the game myself and finally made up my mind about it.

This is perhaps the best Psychological Horror game to ever be produced

To not spoil much I will just say this,
You will be confused
You will feel sad.
You will feel broken
You will feel upset
You will feel hopeless
You will be broken down like a fucking swine in a butcher shop
And most importantly; You will feel lost

Cry of Fear is quite literally perfection when it comes to utilizing emotions. The game also does a fantastic job at making you want to quit and or give up. It is an insanely good game that stands mighty fucking tall today for very good reason.

If you like horror literally at all, give this game a chance. You will not regret it

Absolutely recommend, this game is a masterpiece. Even in 2022 when graphics in games are pushing hyper-realism, this old game derived from a half-life mod is incredible. The horror is perfected in every aspect - even the audio can put you on high alert and absolutely terrify you, no matter the actual threat level. You could be in a completely safe room with no enemies and still be absolutely petrified in fear. The visuals, though blocky, are enough on their own to be a horrifying game. The gameplay is more realistic then what you see in some modern games today. The devs add so many small features that just add that much more tension to the game. All-out perfection. And for the price? This game is a gem, and I hope that more people start to like it.

Fantastic adventure and edge-of-your-seat running and gunning without much running and conservative gunning. First play-through feel very long because there is so much to explore. The atmosphere and game design really lends itself to that exploration without it feeling forced or like it is a chore, instead I find myself eager to find out what's behind every corner and was almost never disappointed, even if the area only existed to ambush me. Excellent replay value with unlockable items and weapons. Great game at the unbeatable price of free. What I dislike about the game is the two major parkour sections (parkour in this game suuuuuucks!!! but there's only two sections of it), and the bugs - man, there are certainly bugs... Fortunately most are not critical game-breaking bugs. The voice acting is cringe most of the time, but it is nice to simply have narrated cutscenes. Most notably disruptive bugs are predictable game crashes (the game will only load a limited number of zones before it crashes for me), and the telescope section towards the end of the game would almost never work properly but fortunately this one often self-corrected (going through the gate fixes the game's camera, and the door code is repeated even if you messed it up). What is perhaps most impressive about this game is how it always feels like an open world (and some sections are indeed extremely open world) while actually being mostly on rails: I only got stuck once trying to find where to use the Ronald Street key (hint: you climb through a window on the bus with a save cassette in it). Overall, I completed the game several times including on the hardest difficulty, proudly unlocking the disgustingly french FAMAS weapon. I don't know if I would come back to attempt unlocking the book weapon given its absurd difficulty, but I can see myself playing this again on occasion just for fun, and to eventually go through every piece of developer commentary. 9/10. I would highly, highly recommend for people who are into indie horror adventure games, or are looking for a good place to find out what the genre is really all about.

I was originally going to write out a multi-paragraph review on Cry of Fear but I feel as if it's better to go into the game blind. Cry of Fear is an emotional roller coaster of a psychological horror game, the horror, gameplay, and story is all truly perfect. It's one of the best and scariest horror game's to come out in the last decade, plus it's free so there's no reason not to give it a shot!! So please do check it out when you can I promise you won't regret it!!! 10/10 very spooky :)

Pros :
+ Interesting and creative story. Not so long, not so short. Progression and plot is well made.
+ Nice and realistic game mechanics. Dual wielding is fun, many different weapons, gears and enemies. Small inventory makes it more survival.
+ The music is pretty good. The atmosphere is beautiful, sad and creepy at the same time.
+ Different game modes and unlockables makes much replay value.
+ It's free, comes with the full OST also for free. It's well optimized and you can run it smoothly on a low-end device.
+ It's an indie game so... supporting the developers is always good.

Cons :
- There are not too many puzzles and most of the times you just need to find an object to unlock a door and that's it.
- It only had a few bugs for me but they were annoying. I also had a lot of crashes and freezes.
- If you ask me... It's more depressing and dark than it is scary and creepy. But the jumpscares are good. Voice acting is a bit awkward at the beginning, but it gets way better near the end.
- Co-op doesn't work anymore. You can use a software but I've heard the game would be really laggy that way.

Overall an awesome horror and survival game. It can sometimes be frustrating but the good stuff makes it worth the pain. I'd also suggest you to focus more on what it says about depression and suicide than the horror stuff. Since it's F2P there's no reason not to try it and see how you feel about it yourself.

Cry of Fear is a FPS-Horror game, where you suffer a car accident, but suddenly Hell break loose, you don't know where you are and the city where you at is dangerous and sinister as before.

One of my favourite thing in this game is the sound design. Okay, truth to be told sometimes is really weird, like sometimes sounds are missing or you can't tell where they come from, but these are not regular problems, however the sounds itself and obviously the music is dark. They give so much to the mood, music fitting for the action perfectly and other sounds are really makes the game scary. You can also listen the ambient and music of the game outside of it. Really catchy and put you in a mood.

The other thing I need to praise is the story, but more the mood. The story itself is like a nightmare. It really feels like it. Also, some people would say, this game it's like a Slient Hill spinoff story, but that's really not the case. There are lot of second meaning in the game, for example for the enemies and metaphors. You can see lot of things and throughout the gameplay, you will get small chunks about the story, which is really sad and depressing one, but the gameplay really put it together well. I really liked the story in general, but I recommend to pay attention to everything you see and feel, because you could miss it. Also, the game has multiple endings (I think 5 different one) and lot of custom maps with different stories, and also some of these are not connected to the game main game itself. However, there were somethings when the main character did something weird in my opinion, but that's the least I can say about it. Really good stuff!

Time to mention the controls. On paper, it looks fine. Usual FPS controls are the basics of the game, however you can dodge to all four directions, there are action buttons for different items, you can combine weapons and other equipments in your hand by pressing the two quick slot buttons at the same time, however the character controls sometimes feels really hard to go. Also, some default controls feels weird in general. I wouldn't say it's bad, but you need to get use to it.

About the gameplay... this is where the game has some unwanted surprise for the player. The gameplay usually is, you get an objective which you know from a cutscene or something around you and start to work your way there, exploring your surrondings and go forward. You will find close doors, which you need to open or someplaces requires items which you have to find, but the point is in order to do these, you usually backtrack sometimes... a lot. This is one of the main issue I have this part, especially about Chapter 4, which is like a freaking backtracking fest. For me, it was quite annoying, because it takes sometime to go one way to another. I need to mention the inventory system, which by default, you have 6 slots. You need to contain weapons, healing items and other story items. I won't rant about the fact, that a fuse takes up a place equally like a shotgun, but in general, this works quite good. However, sometimes you need to make hard decisions, when you have to leave items behind, but you can get them back if you go back to that map... and yes, the maps are connected to each other, and you can walk around until you won't get cut off. You get enemies in the game, which have different bahaviours sometimes. They are scary at first, however some of them later will be look like a joke... but not every one. The scares in the game works well, either it just atmosphere scare or jumpscare... however the last one is quite common, which can get annoying through out the time, but the game is indeed scary. Gunplay is good in the game, weapons have different characteristic and you can use them as close combat weapons too. There are weapons like that too in general, too. So, the gameplay is quite good, but backtracking makes quite annoying. The fact, that enemies goes through walls sometimes are annoying, just like jumpscares can be. Later the game gets really frustrating with the low inventory slots and some areas and chapters feels too long in general. Wouldn't say bad, but there are bugs too in the game.

About the graphics, for 2013 it looked all right, but nowadays it's not that great. Need to say, this game originally was a Half-Life mod which made by Gold Source engine... yes. No wonder this game took 5 years to make with that engine. So because of this, it's not the best looking thing, but somehow makes it more scary. Need to say, some enemies, props looks very detailed, so it's not bad that all.

Cry of Fear is the most scarriest game I've ever played. Definetly worth to check it out, especially this is a free game with coop mission, custom story and a really dark and sad story, with a depressive and also beautiful soundtrack. Even if this game cost money, I would still recommend it to get it. Not my favourite game of all time, but definetly one of the best horror experience I've ever get.

This has been the scariest game I have ever played, hands down (experience with games like outlast, dead space, Silent Hill, F.E.A.R, Slender games, etc). This game is old and has controls which you need to adjust to a little (namely the crouch jump), however, this game does an amazing job placing that unsettling anxiety throughout the whole game. My biggest compliment are the sounds and music which will put you into a panic and can be outright terrifying when you have no idea what is going on. You have few moments of relaxation when it gets started and the game progressively places you in deeper psychological states with the main character Simon. I've found myself sweating at times because of the feeling of panic the game will put you in. The enemy designs are extremely creepy and will become more messed up as the game progresses. They are constantly placed in positions where you won't see them coming or they will sprint towards you with barely any time to react. The game stays true to real survival horror as guns are valuable, ammo can (and will) become scarce, and you have very limited space to carry what you want vs what you need. My only complaint is that some tasks are confusing with little idea of where to go, but I have played through this game twice and yes there is always an item to find or a place the game specifically wants you to go.
If your looking for a free psychological horror game (that isn't just based solely on jumpscares) with a great story and terrifying gameplay then this will absolutely be a great experience.
(P.S.- old versions of this game had many bugs and crashing was common, recent updates in the last year have fixed this and I have had no problems with this game since replaying it in 2020.)

Good game to have some laughs with friends in coop mode, doctor mode is hard af, but doable, and the story is really good, a bit edgy, but thats how it was made, so no complains.

This game walked so Half-Life Alyx could run. Half-Life Alyx clearly ripped off the zombie models from this game, the immersion of this game eclipses VR as the second I launched it my eardrums started bleeding which is truly next level immersion. The sound design is also truly beautiful as you can hear enemy zombies despite them being on the other side of the map. VR could never hope to come close to this masterpiece

Cry Of Fear is a beautifully crafted horror game. It will show you almost every mechanic a horror game can have. It doesn't per say have a built in atmosphere but it does bring you, the player, into the deciding factor of whether you wish to continue. The mechanics will scare the living daylights out of anyone and contributes to a lot of what this game has to offer in the fear department. The game for me always seemed to be scary, even when it gave me weapons to use. I recommend this game to anyone who's a fan of the Silent Hill games. It has a lot of similarities per say to it. Anyways, I'd give this game a solid 10/10 due to it's wonderfully crafted story and great usage of mechanics.

Not gonna lie, haven't touched the single-player campaign but having played the multiplayer campaign and some other survival modes, other than a couple of collision glitches with the monsters, it was pretty entertaining.
Would recommend.

One of the best horror games out there at any given time. A game with great atmosphere, cheap jumpscares (which work very well) and it will constantly have you at the edge of your seat. The story is nothing brilliant but the endings are great. The co-op mode also looks fun, but I have yet to try it. It's free, why haven't you played it already?!

This is a (as of now) 7 year old free game.
It's old, it's free, and it's way better than a lot of paid modern games.
The graphics are obviously a bit outdated, but the game is really well made. There's a lot of creativity and excellence in design here. It almost reminds me of a low budget Silent Hill.
Has weapons and combat, which is a plus, but it's well balanced. You won't feel like the Doom guy, but you can fight and defend yourself, like it should be.
A must for horror fans.

Expect typos because this game still has me shaking.

Pros:

Every single thing about the game is terrifying. There is a feeling of pure fear and paranoia that follows you into EVERY SINGLE AREA of the game. You ALWAYS feel like you're being watched and you never feel safe at all.

The monsters. Where do I even start? So the twitchers, yeah they're pretty scary. They look at you with a hammer making a creepy sound and twitch all around and that's pretty scary. Then you discover more monsters and how unholy their designs are, in a good way. Those screaming ladies with metal for arms? No thanks. I would like some sleep please. Don't get me started on those uppers... that scream...

They nailed the psychological horror aspect PERFECTLY. You never know which room you're walking into and you have no idea if its safe or not. You will never feel safe and the biggest enemy in this game is that feeling that something is watching you the entire time and you CANNOT escape it. Not to mention the incredibly depressing aspect of this game as well. You get a real look into the mental issues of Simon and many of the things in this game point towards how sad everything is and how alone you are. It gives you a feeling of true hopelessness.

The atmosphere is perfect. The ambient sounds and the fact that there's very little music makes it easier for you to become more sensitive to jumping at a sound.

Speaking of the sound, it's perfect. It's an older game and the audio will be dated, but the dated audio just makes it that more terrifying. The screams of pure agony from the upper only add to the horror of the whole game.

Awesome soundtrack and it gives you an old Resident Evil vibe.

Honestly I was gonna add dated graphics to this but I feel that only adds to the experience. The enemy designs and animations, and the fact that they're so dated, make it a terrifying game. And that's AWESOME

Cons:

Controls can be a bit sticky at times.

The stamina bar can be annoying if you don't pay attention to it.

The knife combat can be awkward at times.

Audio balancing can be awkward too.

All in all, it's a really REALLY good and terrifying psychological horror and I highly recommend it.

TL;DR:

Game never lets you feel safe. Prepare for poop to fill your pants. No cons bad enough to ruin the game.

This game is. beyond amazing or beautiful, the story, the ambiance, the fear you feel every second when you're creeping through a dark tunnel, not knowing WHAT is lurking, and waiting to kill you, but knowing that there is always something there. the build up of pure terror in this game, combined with a tragic, sad, yet beautiful story make me wish more horror games were like this. cry of fear was the first game I ever watched Markiplier play on YouTube when i was ten years old (Ik that's a little young to be viewing some of the stuff in this game but meh, get off my dick), and I remember how captivating this game was. well 7 years later and it holds up the expectations I've had since I was a child. and I don't believe that a simple review can describe this game, its just something you're gonna have to play for yourself, and don't worry. you will not regret this purchase at all.

In conclusion: It's a 10/10 for me.
(And if you disagree at all I will kindly take your opinion, and say, That's cool but when.)

This game is so special. The atmosphere is so fucking oppressive, u need to play it to feel what i mean !
Music, story etc... everything is perfect ! Make me remind SH Homecoming, which was one of the best for me.

This game has so many subliminal messages and metaphors of depression and anxiety, and as ridiculous as it may sound it did help lift me up during my down times. Although the game is terrifying, the message behind every monster and level means something.

After finishing the game I usually come back now and then to just binge play and enjoy myself. Good job Team Psykskallar, there's nothing like this game, and you did a damn good job.

I played this right around it was first released and I loved it, a full decade later and I still do I see this game as a perfect mash up of Silent Hill and Resident Evil I really recommend this horror game to anyone that loves the horror genre, it astounds me still that this game was free.

Exceptional quality for a free game and actually the scariest game I've ever played, I think. Freakin nerve wrecking. That's why I stopped playing it xD. See for yourself if you can endure the terror. It's a very original experience. Very much recommended
