Also if pixel-art is your forte... very nice sprite-work.
-
Its a very nice single-player experience, both gameplay and story wise.
-
Positives:
The pixel-art
The story
Easy controles
Many ways to build your character (I was a tank, specialized in defence).
A surprising veriety of special attacks which feel as impactful as they are.
Well placed humour in unexpected places (I'm not going to spoil them).
De DLC is worth it... (and if you're like me, wait for it to go on sale).
Great soundtrack that fits the admosphere and mood perfectly.
Huge interconneted world (I got lost -even with the map- a few times).
The boss-fights.
Fuckton of easter-eggs
The random npc chatter (yes, you read that right)
Negatives:
Depth perseption, sometimes really hard to see where you can and cant jump to.
Sometimes its a bit to grindy - but that can be negated with the right equipment.
Could use randomly generated quests for more play-time.
I'm trying to think about negatives, but this game turned out to be up-my-ally so its realy hard -_-.
-
If you want a game that is not just a time-waster but something interesting with some hart to it.
Give this game a try. I did and was more then pleasently surprised...
and am still surprised I put over 200 hours in this game :)

- The story in this game is very nice with PCs dipping in and out of the diagetic MMORPG's story and the overarching story which concerns the characters and the world they live in. We have the classic, high stakes drama at play but grounded on the characters in the game.
- The RPG battles and dungeon exploration is very well done. I didn't ever feel bored with either despite some of the side-quests being very traditional jRPG style fetches or finds - though presented through the meta- lens of the MMORPG. The difficulty of the battles had a wide range too, with simple mobs, difficult bosses, optional very difficult bosses. I also think the amount of character customisation was just on point.
- The puzzles in this game make up more and more of the gameplay as you progress, with some of the later dungeons having some immense and very challenging puzzles requiring a mix of dexterity and brainpower to solve. For me, some of puzzles were taxing and definitely I would approach this game as a challenging one rather than a relaxing one.
- The graphics in this game are phenomenal, with wonderfully detailed characters elements and areas. Absolutely outstanding. The music and sound design were good. I don't think the soundtrack was particularly memorable.

A good chunk of this game's gameplay is based on them, so keep it in mind.
After that, I can absolutely recommend this game to you. The controls are absolutely great, the combat is very fun and engaging, becoming more complex as you play. Although it becomes really grindy sometimes, my experience with it was not frustrating.
The history is also fantastic, and while it has some pacing problems, it complements the gameplay greatly.
The graphics are beautiful and charming, something that I haven't seen in quite a while.
The puzzles, despite being a letdown for some, are really well done. It isn't your average switch on and off turning, they will take your knowledge of the in-game abilities to the maximum. It will probably be your thing if you're a Zelda games fan.
The soundtrack is also really good. Trust me. I have listened to it for HOURS.
So yeah, that's about it for my review. I wholeheartely recommend this hidden gem to you.

If you want to play an old-school action RPG without any of the old-school BS this is the game for you.
There's a wonderful combat system that has so much depth and fantastic dungeon puzzles that really scratch the same itch as older Legend of Zelda games. The story is fantastic and serves the gameplay very well.
I can't recommend this game highly enough.

It's repetitive. You will find yourself doing the same things over and over again, a lot. You might say that this is expected in an ARPG, but, in this case, this isn't limited to combat: even simple navigation will become a problem you will need to keep solving repeatedly. Each map has «secret» alternative routes you can take, and there a lot of them; you will not remember how to get to all of them, but you will need to use them again as you unlock more quests. The level design plays with verticality a lot, but it's not implemented very well: it's difficult to tell platforms of different heights apart, which sometimes makes it unclear whether you can make a particular jump or not, and if you try to make it and fail, you'll have to spend a minute to get back to where you were. You will often be solving problems you've already solved in the past but have forgotten about, which isn't very fun, and pads the total playthrough time a lot. You will also spend a lot of your time doing puzzles, and while some of them do rely on cleverness, the absolute majority of them rely on timing and performing a series of precise actions in a row. The amount of precision required can get to the point of being obnoxious; I am a very patient player, but even I almost had the thought of lowering the puzzle difficulty cross my mind.
The game has figurative tonnes of content packed into it, but it's quantity over quality. Outside of the main questline, you can skip all of the dialogue and not lessen your experience at all. I don't recommend doing all the side-quests either, some of them are simply not worth your time: especially not the four endgame level 60 ones. Just pick and choose whatever sounds interesting to you instead. But even if you don't do all the quests, your inventory will still become cluttered with items you will never need to use, and the amount of upgrade options, mechanics and features can become overwhelming. The elemental mechanics are a good example: depending on the element you currently have selected, your character's stats will change by a lot, and because the game often wants you to swap between elements on the fly, the game feels unnecessarily inconsistent. (By the way, I highly recommend enabling «element swapping from the quick menu» in the settings.) CrossCode is not a simple and straightforward game, but it doesn't feel like it gains any depth from its complexity. Also, there are too many weeb references.
That's it for the cons, now for the pros. You might be surprised by the thing I appreciate about this game the most: its settings menu. There are a lot of options, comparable to what you'd normally only see in something like a fan-made mod. And, unlike in many mods, every single option is properly explained. The gaming experience is highly customisable, and I recommend looking through it every so often, tweaking the settings to suit your tastes. All of the many mechanics of the game are also properly explained: every menu page has a help manual, every equipment boost, stat, ability, consumable, and status effect can be examined and read about. You are provided the option to learn how absolutely everything works, if you so desire. Every monster you defeat, item you find, piece of lore you discover is recorded in one of the game's many bestiaries/records/encyclopedias to a frankly comical degree: I wouldn't even consider reading all of it, but I can't not appreciate all the effort put into it. Also, every single cutscene and dialogue is quickly and easily skippable, which is a must.
With the exception of swapping elements, the combat flows really well and is nicely varied, and running around smacking monsters randomly is just plain fun. Besides, the game is pleasant to even simply look at: the characters and environments are colourful and varied, the pixel art is excellent, and it's proper pixel art, too, unlike the nu-pixel monstrosities in vogue today. It's not just the quality of the visuals either: the world itself feels real and alive, thanks to the great effort put into the maps and the interesting little visual details sprinkled everywhere.
If you ever felt like you want to play an old-school ARPG with all the modern conveniences, CrossCode is an easy pick for you.

The setting, graphics, sound, gameplay and dialogue come together to make something very enjoyable. Some puzzles and combat can be very frustrating, but that makes them more satisfying to beat :)
The game is long. My save file play time was 55 hours to beat the game (Without DLC) and most side content.
100% worth the price if the above appeals to you.

The other reviews explained the pros and cons, but what hooked me into the game were the party members.
They are a lot of fun, they react to your fighting, to some puzzles, to platforming and they are actually good at fighting with the player. Some NPC's get their own little story line.
All around the game has a lot of personality and I hope the developers had a lot of fun making this great game.

I bought this game while waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong to be released. I figured at $15 it was low-risk.
This is now one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. It is simply wonderful. The combat is tight, the puzzles are unique and creative, the story is told in an interesting and engaging way, and the small details here and there make it is obvious that this is a labor of love by the developers. It's emotionally engaging, often goofy (but never over-the-top), and just plain fun.

I kinda really fuckin love this game.
the story's great, the characters are a joy, and Lea is the single greatest thing mankind has created. The puzzles are pretty unique, and make me feel smarter than I actually am, and the combat, while frustrating at times due to the sheer amount of shit the game can throw at you sometimes, is still really fun regardless. The world is also really well designed, being full of platforming puzzles and tempting items that are just out of reach. It can be a bit confusing on where to go at times, since there aren't really many indications of a change in elevation such as shadows or whatever, but it's never ruined my experience, personally.
If you like action rpgs whatsoever, or just rpgs in general, and don't mind a challange and a lot of puzzles, than absolutely give this game a shot.

A Beautiful Experience with Minor Issues
CrossCode manages to combine snappy Action RPG combat, challenging puzzles, and a fun to follow cast of characters with beautiful pixel art in a top-down perspective and a soundtrack that's atmospheric and often easy to hum along to.
As any game, CrossCode is not without flaws. In my experience those flaws rarely interrupted the gameplay experience.
Story: You follow Lea, an Avatar girl, as she makes her way through the world of CrossWorlds, a Virtual Reality MMORPG. On her path, she makes friends and rivals while encountering one or the other bump in the road.
Gameplay: Combat is fast and your main tools are ranged and melee attacks for offense, as well as a shield and dashes to block or dodge enemy attacks. Aiming can be harder on controller but for me it never caused any bigger issues. Further into the game you can obtain combat arts for all four tools, giving you powerful options to potentially annihilate multiple enemies at once at the cost of SP, which is build up by hitting enemies.
Puzzles use the different elements obtained throughout the game to pose either traditional puzzles or puzzles that require timing and precision to get through.
Both combat and precision puzzles can be quite challenging, but the game boasts an assist mode that allows you to make potentially frustrating sections easier on yourself.
Pacing: The game is divided into chapters, with each chapter mostly following the simple concept of exploring an area, finding its major city, and then venturing to get into the dungeon and exploring it.
- Areas consist of optional combat you can use to level up, plants to punch, and platforming puzzles to solve accentuated by wonderful pixel art and an atmospheric soundtrack.
- Cities are where you get the major quest to access the dungeon, use your acquired materials and money to trade for better equipment, and where you can accept side quests to solve for additional materials and equipment. Most side quests are chains and add to the world building while fetch quests are kept on the lower end.
- Dungeons are a mix of puzzles and forced combat that conclude with a big boss fight at the end. Dungeon length varies and gets longer as the game progresses.
Biggest Flaws: Generally the game has extremely responsive controls, easy to navigate menus, and lenient platforming. Its main issues come from the map screen and depth perception. While you can see which room you are on and it's easy enough to tell where to go, you can't see where exactly you are in the room nor are there details such as height displayed. Most rooms in the game are small enough to the point where this isn't a big issue but there are some bigger or more convoluted screens that can make orientation a little more difficult than necessary. Where the pixel art shines is where depth can sometimes be hard to tell. At times platforms can appear to be on the same elevation as you but when you jump to reach them you realize that they're on a higher plane of existence. Usually this only results in a few seconds of getting back up but one should certainly be prepared to feel frustrated by this at least once during a first playthrough. These two being my biggest complains shows how much effort and care went into the game's creation.
All in all, CrossCode is definitely a recommendation for any RPG fan, especially those craving a 2D top-down experience that has fair bit of challenge and a fun story to back it up. With a world full of beautiful pixel art, bad puns, and a lot of shameless references the exploration of CrossCode is certain to be rewarding in its own, special way.

Story is interesting and unique even tho at some points during it there are some cliches here and there making it easy to predict what comes next.
Characters are so lovable, have unique personalities, but talking with them can be hard from the stupid decision to not give the main character any meaningful way to talk. I know it was a design and story based decision, but i hoped that half way through the game the 'problem' would be solved and not wait until the end of the DLC to include a solution.
Combat is fun, but can get annoying and repetitive really fast with so many enemies on the map. Good thing that most of them don't attack until you attack so you can skip them. But if you need some exp to level up good luck.
Puzzles, they were fun and nice to do in the start. The puzzles started getting harder and harder and culminated with the base game's boss fight where there were some really annoying puzzles. Almost made me not finish the game, pulled through and finished even tho i hated every minute of it. But it did made me not play more than 30 minutes of the DLC even tho i have it bought and watched a playthrough online since i was sick and tired of puzzles.
Exploration was nice, but got really annoying during the later parts where you had to travel from other rooms to the current room where the desired chest was. Stopped collecting chests in the last 2 major areas.
Bottom line i enjoyed the game and loved the relationship between Lea, Emilie and Toby. During the later parts of the game the annoying puzzles made it really hard to love the game. Keep in mind if you hate puzzles this game might not be for you.

- The environments and character sprites are gorgeous and expressive. The games color palette pops with every pixel, painting beautiful scene after beautiful scene.
- The movement and controls are fluid and intuitive, and the almost-top-down angle lends to fun and clever movement puzzles and exploration.
- The combat is deep and absolutely exhilarating. Boss designs kept me guessing to the very end, and I never left a single combat encounter feeling dissatisfied. Even grinding (unnecessary) can feel like a blast because of the high-octane combat.
- Arguably even more fun than the combat (in this humble puzzle-gamer's opinion) were the puzzles. Every dungeon had so many expertly designed and often impressively difficult puzzles. It scratched an itch for puzzles that I have felt since the absence of Portal 3
- The music always captures the exact emotion it needs to, from tense thrills to deep, heartfelt sadness or joy. This soundtrack captures everything a great indie soundtrack should
- The content of the game is so much more than you could ask for. My 115 hours of play are after about a playthrough and a half (with the half being when I originally started, had to stop for several months then finally returned and started over), including all side quests and some time in the endgame arena. More importantly, each and every side quest presented its own unique, handcrafted challenge, and many of them featured entirely unique mechanics found only within the quest.
- The story was as thrilling as the combat, with so many incredible hi and low points that drew out more intense emotion than I have felt from a game in a long time. There are parts that drove me to tears of sadness, and others that brought out tears of joy, and this is thanks to the game's stellar...
- Character writing is beautifully well-executed. The game is chock-full of colorful and unique characters that are so much fun to play with, including the main protagonist. This alone could be the selling-point of the game for me and it would still be *good,* but instead you get everything on top of it and it's *great.*
X
All in all, I can easily say that this is going in my Top 5 Games of All Time, easily. I worry that no other game will capture the emotion that this game's writing made me feel. I envy those who haven't played it before and get to experience it for the first time. 10/10.

Even with the base game I can't emphasize just how enjoyable this experience is. At least as far as I'm concerned it hits all the right beats and is an immensely satisfying title.
-Strong story. While it isn't anything super original it is well developed and paced with a lot of strong points and few weak elements. The isekai MMO style world here isn't as trite as most stories in this genre, and makes a great backdrop for a sci-fi adventure. To help give it's own flavor, the game has a lot of fun tweaks to concepts like a silent protagonist and living in a game world. The protagonist Lea and the cast of side characters are all incredibly likable. Each of them has something fun or interesting to offer to a world that is rich with it's own in and out of game lore. It's very easy to get fully invested into what's going to happen as the plot progresses.
-Great pixel art. All the characters are easy to read and expressive which brings the story elements to life. The world and enemies read very well for clean combat and exploration. The renders are terrific and stylized and bosses and such are big and interesting. Also, the game was smart to have lots of other 'players' running around referencing the fact that it's a game world, which gives a lot of life to the premise. Only gripe is sometimes it's really hard to read the platforms, like you don't know what level everything is on from the isometric perspective. The mountain area is really bad at this and emphasizes this problem early on.
-Terrific gameplay. With a controller the controls are airtight, Smooth and responsive. Combat is super fun and while it's easy to get started, the further you go the more depth unlocks until by the DLC your options are almost overwhelming. The puzzles and dungeons can feel quite excessive, especially the DLC dungeon which feels like it takes an eternity, but that's just a minor pacing gripe, they are still enjoyable to solve and execute. The game's difficulty is tough but fair, and gives options to circumvent roadblocks, such as reducing difficulty at no penalty, switching builds and strategies, or grinding out gear and levels. While there's no class system, which feels like a bit of a missed opportunity give the story, RPG elements still have a lot of depth. As you level the game gives lots of skills and gear options for you to build things like heavy melee, range, recovery, defense, or even item spam.
-Great sound design. I don't know if I'd say it's one of the best soundtracks ever but it's still very catchy, and evokes the 16 bit roots of the game. None of the tracks are a dud and either punch the scenes home well or get lost in the background as intended. Like the graphics, the sound effects read well, giving you a clear and clean idea of whats going on and when things land or perform certain effects.
-Excellent value. With the base game and DLC (which you should buy, no question) you're looking at a solid 50 hours of content to run the main story, and maybe 25-50 more hours to get through the side content. The world is dense with quests, items, and secrets to find, and while some quests are better than others, there's no question there's a ton of game here for 30 dollars. Also the new game+ options are broad and the game's story provides a lot of fun gimmicks for those who have beaten it once and hop it with maxed items and levels. The game also has an unlockable arena and boss rush for people who enjoy score attacks.
Really after 9 years of earnest enthusiasm from the developer, this game should at least warrant consideration. Crosscode is a fantastic indie title and for anyone that's a fan of the super nintendo era RPGs and puzzle games, you absolutely must check this one out.

Pros
- The gameplay. Longest part of the review. It has four things in the core gameplay loop, those being combat, exploration, puzzles, and progression. Starting with the combat, it's fluid, has depth, and is deeply satisfying. The sound effects, animations, and how the combat works all are executed in a way that results in rewarding, skill-based fights that aren't brutally challenging but will still make you feel accomplished when you master the aspects of it. Your arsenal consists of four basic moves: Melee, Ranged, Dodge, and Guarding. Both melee and ranged builds work well, and you can do both at any time (No need to have specific weapons for one or the other.) Another thing to note is that most enemies only attacks you after you attack them, so when you explore, they don't get in the way at all. Exploration typically consists of some short, some slightly longer platforming sections that lead to chests that can contain anything from upgrade materials to unique equipment. These are completely optional and can be done whenever you want, but provide an great change of pace and variety. When you figure out the path you need to take to reach a chest, it becomes instantly clear whether you've figured it out or not, and feels very satisfying once you get there. Often times, you will find yourself enjoying just figuring out how to get to a chest more than opening them, even if the reward is exactly what you were hoping for. This is because of how CrossCode makes its puzzles and what makes them so rewarding. Puzzles. Despite being done very well, this is pretty much the only thing you'll find negative reviews complaining about, since they're a core part of the gameplay and some people don't like having them as one of the focus points. If you don't like puzzles, I'm sorry, this might not be for you. If you do, or don't care either way, stop reading this review and buy it. You could be playing the game right now. As for what makes these puzzles good, it comes down to them being designed with a single solution that makes it apparent when you have figured it out. This means whenever you think of an answer that isn't correct, it becomes obvious immediately, so you'll move on to another solution without spending time trying something impossible. And when you do figure it out, it gives you that feeling of it all clicking together. The final part of the gameplay loop is progression. You have equipment and levels. The skill tree system doesn't make you spend hours looking at it to figure out what you want, as any path you can take is designed for different playstyles, so you work toward what affects your way to play first, and fill out the others later. Equipment is gained through chests and merchants, which require materials you can gather from the environment and enemies (Environment materials are just plants that break instantly, no tedious mining here.) Equipment has a level attached to it, but doesn't require you to be that level to wear it. This is to show you when you're behind, and saves you the trouble of figuring out if you need to grind XP or equipment. Also, the grind is almost non-existent, you won't spend long amounts of time except at the end game, and even then it's not that bad.
- The story. (No spoilers) It is a slow burn with lovable characters that are real and have plenty of dialogue to express themselves with. While it does take a while for the plot to go into full gear, when it gets there, it GETS THERE. The world building is also consistent with a decent amount of lore to it. And when it wants to make you feel something, it does so perfectly. Really the only reason this game doesn't have more attention is that people don't want to spoil the story, so they can't make youtube videos about it without ruining the experience.
- Graphics. It has great pixel art and when characters talk, they actually have a full size body on the screen 90% of the time, and each character has plenty of different expressions, some used only for a handful of scenes. The enemies attacks are depicted in a way that is obvious so you won't be hit by things you can't see. The environments are depicted in a way that are instantly distinguishable, so you won't confuse two places. There are also screen effects and lighting that give a great deal of feeling to what's happening in the situation. When you charge an ability, it zooms in and darkens the edges to give the feeling of storing up power. When the characters are talking, it sways the camera in moments of uncertainty, gives a subtle flash when there's a surprise, and many more to emphasize what the character is feeling at that moment. It's not AAA super realistic stuff, but it looks and feels better than most AAA games.
- Sound and music. This is a really strong point actually, and while it doesn't have grandiose music like Hollow Knight, it always sounds like it is exactly what should be playing for whatever situation you're in. Combat, just walking around, cutscene, all have music that goes together with it seamlessly. Sound effects have also been made great here, there are ques for when an enemy is about to attack that are unique to each enemy, so even when an enemy is at the edge of the screen you'll know what kind of attack to expect. Your attacks also have incredibly satisfying sounds along with them, probably the best example is the low 'pop' sound that plays when you break a plant, it's what makes gathering those drops not feel like a chore, and it does it all on its own.
- Bugs. I have not seen any. No game crashes, no weird glitched NPC's, nothing. You will not have your immersion broken by some random bug while you're playing this game. Essentially you can expect the complete opposite of Bethesda.
Long review over. I hope this was helpful, honestly I really want more people to play this. It has not gotten nearly enough attention considering how good it is. As one last thing, after playing the DLC, this became my favorite game, replacing the Witcher 3. The only thing the Witcher 3 did better was sidequests and graphics. Thank you Radical Fish Games for giving us this masterpiece.

Buy it, it's worth every cent
That out of the way, welcome to my review.
First off, a little talk about the game and what it is.
CrossCode is an ARPG that combines wonderful visual features with above-average gameplay and combat features. Fan of close-combat, brute force, and being in the face of your enemy? This game has what you need. Want to be an agile archer, shooting and crowd-controlling your opponent while throwing BALLS at your opponent, dealing a decent amount of damage? This game has what you need. Want to let the enemy kill themselves while you stand there, looking up what you need to farm for your next helmet, weapon, torso, or boots? This game will show you what THORNS means.
The story is amazing and plot-heavy from start to finish and will leave you, if you are like me, with no dry eye on many occasions. You will visually and personality-wise fall in love with not only the looks but also the characters in an instant! Even those who you may hate at first will grow onto you. Or not, who knows? :emilieDare:
Following, I will sum up everything that is important for those who don't want to read too much before deciding. However, I'm sure that many other reviews will prove that this game is an ABSOLUTE masterpiece in many eyes.

To list some of the pros:
- Satisfying basic combat with some very cool special moves
- Fun puzzles (in my opinion, more on those later)
- Great story with likeable characters
- Amazing exploration that truly feels rewarding with all the secrets scattered around, at least three hidden quest lines I can think of that span the entire game, with great finales.
- Difficulty can be tweaked with no downsides to allow a lot of people to enjoy the game, such as turning down puzzle speed or making combat easier.
- Very creative NG+ that can have a lot of options depending on how many achievements you have.
- Art style is amazing, some of the most beautiful pixel art I've seen
Cons:
- Puzzles can be really annoying at times. Especially some of the really long puzzles that require lots of trial and error until you can do the thing in one go. Personally, I don't hate the process of doing these puzzles, and it's pretty satisfying to gradually progress through it, but I can see why some find it tedious. Luckily, the puzzle speed can be turned down which would make these a lot more lenient.
- Jumping puzzles can be really annoying at times due to how depth can be very hard to gauge in this 2D perspective
- The freely tweakable difficulty, for puritans. Some might consider it cheating, so if that is extremely bothering to you, you might want to avoid this title.
All in all, I think the bad parts are drastically outweighed by the good parts. 10/10, one of the best experiences I've had in gaming that I can think nothing but fondly of.

And a few years later, I can still say that I am extremely impressed and really enjoy CrossCode. It has a great story-line, great characters and character development, smooth and satisfying combat, well-thought of puzzles and not to mention the catchy soundtrack and beautiful graphics.
Definitely on my top 5 favourite games of all time. I extremely recommend.

I bought the game back in summer(2020) because of its looks and combat. And then the story hooked me in and I couldn't let go.
I played this game for a week straight and it was literally the most fun week I've had that year.
The combat is sooooo goood. Every games I've since played just doesn't make that much fun if I compare it to Crosscode. Combat was fast with heavy hitting special attacks once you get further into the game. And all the combos to get a higher grade. Just pure fun.
The story tho... The story is what held this game together. As you go on it gets more and more interesting, you always want to know what happens next and don't want to put the game down. Not gonna spoil anything here tho because everyone has to experience that story spoiler free tbh.
The soundtrack was awesome too, it coomplemented the game very nicely.
The game is a bit pricey and in the beginning I didn't really want to buy it because of that. But the game has very much to offer for the full price it asks for, compared to some other lackluster games that drop nowadays.
All in all the game is a 10/10 for me.
I can't wait for the dlc to come out someday, that'll be an instabuy.

Gameplay is sort of like a much more action-packed Zelda with the dungeons being filled with lots of puzzles (some of them rather fiendish but all of them very clever!)
The art style is great, the music is amazing and the game is just a joy to run around and explore.
But the truely shining part are the characters and the story. The story isn't ground breaking but told at a very good pace with some good twists in it. But the characters themselves are the best part, just enjoying your time running through the game world with them as they talk back and forth. You really grow attached to them and their little personality quirks. It makes all the hard hitting parts of the story hit even harder, and that's just good story telling!
This game took me nearly 60 hours to complete my first playthrough and even rushing through it would be a 40 - 50 hours. There is just so much game to be had in here, and it's so, so, SO GOOD.
Criminally underappreciated game. Absolutely give it a go.

My only complaint, which is echoed by others, is that the puzzles can go on for a bit too long at times. However, all those puzzles are extremely well designed and fun to solve, it can just be a bit too much to solve one after another because of how elaborate some of them are. If they were to make additional content in the same vein, I wouldn't complain, and I don't recommend the developers change much of anything about the dungeon design. I have the same problem with a game like Baba is You, where solving really difficult puzzles can be exhausting.
All that said, the game just feels right. The core character movement is fantastic, and even the the menus and UI are a joy to interact with. One of the best indie games ever made, no doubt.

The second thing is that if you have epilepsy, or are bothered by flashing lights, I would be careful before buying. There are only a few moments where it was bothersome, except for the final boss. I finished that fight with a headache (it was still a fun fight though).
CrossCode is a Puzzle-Adventure-Platformer-RPG with lovable characters and an amazing story. The main character is only able to say a handful of words (hi, bye, etc). Despite this, she is one of the most expressive characters I've seen in a game in a while. She's funny, sassy, emotional, and lovable. The side characters are all fun and have unique personalities, and there's plenty of dialogue between party members that makes them feel real. Some AAA titles have trouble making their characters even likable, which makes CrossCode characters even more beloved for me.
The story and setting begins as a fun, carefree adventure with friends, but as you progress you begin to learn more and more about dark secrets regarding the characters and the game world. I was immediately captured by the mystery, which was well written and rarely predictable. I can't say too much about the story without spoiling it, but I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The combat is fun and has a lot of depth. You can switch between elements to target enemies' weaknesses, and each element allows you to use different skills. The skills you choose as you progress can change the playstyle of each element, which I thought was really cool. Some elements are more defensive, some offensive, and all can be customized to suit your needs and preferred playstyles. The enemies are all unique and the bosses are all pretty fun. Most bosses have an integrated puzzle or gimmick that can (or has to be) exploited or solved to beat them. I liked the combat puzzles, since it gave the combat more depth than just Dodge -> Shoot -> Combat Art -> repeat. TLDR: combat good.
This game also has a lot of side content. There's plenty of quests to do and lots of areas to explore, with pretty much every area being full of platforming puzzles to reach loot or different rooms. The quests are all well written and almost all of them are pretty fun, and they usually include some funny or self aware/meta dialogue in them. This game also has a lot to offer for completionists as well. There are plant and monster dictionaries that encourage you to explore each level and find every species. There's tons of achievements (both in game and steam achievements, you don't get a steam achievement for every in-game one however) and even an arena mode near the end game where you can take on gauntlets of enemies for various rewards. These plus tons of loot hidden in every area, along with some secret side quests make the game amazing to dig your teeth into.
I should admit that I'm not really qualified to talk about the puzzles in this game for this reason: I don't really like puzzles. Also I'm pretty stupid. Please note that this is a personal limitation, and if you are a fan of puzzles I think you'd probably really enjoy them. They all require some critical thinking and the game does a good job at introducing a concept and then having you use and expand upon that concept in different ways. If you're not really into puzzles (like me), then you might find yourself groaning at the end of dungeons, which always save the most complex puzzles for last.
I guess that's it. Also there's some postgame content that should be released soon but was obviously delayed cus of the pandemic. I'm really looking forward to it.
TLDR: game amazing, characters amazing, combat great, story amazing, side content plentiful, puzzles cool.

I played about half of it on Xbox Game pass when I had a free trial and decided to buy it on Steam to support the developer, so my actual play time is probably around 80 hours. This game features clever writing, excellent puzzles, engaging combat, memorable characters, an emotional story, everything you could ask for in a single player experience. The only bad thing I can say about the game is that I was sick of the jumping puzzles by the end. Everything else about this game I love. It made me cry. It made me exhilarated. It made me want to keep coming back to know what happens to Lea. There's still so much for me to do after beating the game with more on the way. And the most amazing thing, this game was made by a tiny team and still managed to be the best game I've played in the past few years.

Driven forward by an engrossing sci-fi plot with multiple levels (I'll avoid detail here so as not to spoil anything), the core combat is fast and fluid, with a huge range of play styles available across an expansive, rewarding ability/upgrade system. There's an impressive range of enemy types that you'll find yourself facing off against, each of which has its own set of abilities, strengths and weaknesses that keep the gameplay fresh. Progression comes from both level advancement and, perhaps moreso, equipment upgrades - with a diverse range of options available through its trading system. Granted, trading can be a little daunting for a newcomer, relying on collection of 'ingredients' from quite a large selection - but I found this to offer a satisfying 'scavenger hunt' dynamic.
The game world comprises towns and overworld locations - which are the focus of most NPC interactions and optional quests - and a series of expansive 'dungeons'. Many of these are highly puzzle-focused, often relying on a 'disc' throwing mechanic that I've not seen used elsewhere, and become genuinely challenging - though never excessively so. I can sympathise with the comment that I've seen from a couple of others that the early dungeons are a little overlong, though personally I loved these, with puzzle deign that for the most part surpasses even that of The Legend of Zelda series (which coming from me, is saying a lot!). Back on the overworld, a secondary form of puzzle design comes from the intricate design that rewards 'parkour' around elevated paths woven throughout the environment, ultimately leading to equipment rewards, new quests or even entire new areas.
CrossCode sees Lea, the protagonist, being joined by a variety of other party-members, and the game excels in character interactions - pretty much all of those who join Lea in her adventure are very memorable, with well-developed personalities, and dialogue that is at times meaningful, endearing or comedic. Topping things off are a series of small touches that litter the game - I really don't want to spoil these, but as one example, you might notice that a certain set of rock formations are specifically designed in the shape of the Tetris tetrominoes, evoking a knowing satisfaction as you realise why one of your companions has remarked upon them.
In closing, I'd just urge anyone with even the slightest attraction towards the genre to give CrossCode a try, it's absolutely at the top-tier of 'indie' game releases - and even available on Xbox Game Pass for ease of accessibility!

Pros:
- Stellar 16-bit pixel work is present here, the developers clearly put lots of effort in. Both the in-game and 'cutscene' character sprites look fantastic, and the backgrounds and design for each of the different areas make for a vibrant and varied experience that is just gorgeous to look at.
- Combat is fast-paced and involves a mixture of both ranged and melee styles. At first, I thought it was fairly limited to simply dodging, hitting and shooting, but there is also blocking, perfect blocking, and super arts for each of the four main abilities, that being hitting, shooting, blocking and dashing. In addition, after unlocking the first element, I discovered the combat system was more varied than I thought, with each element also having unique stat increases and decreases, as well as its own status effect and super arts, most of which have two, completely different kinds of super art you can swap between at any time for no cost. With a total of four elements and more powerful super arts that you unlock as you progress through the game, what results is a satisfying combat experience that I found to be challenging and entertaining at the same time.
-Bosses are designed very well for the most part. Most bosses incorporate the use of an element to beat them, and generally involve a puzzle elements to the battles to stun them, which kept a healthy balance between combat and puzzle.
-Puzzles were generally well designed, with each major dungeon in the game introducing new mechanics that keep the feeling fresh.
-The OST, while I didn't find as enthralling as some other indie game OSTs, was very well composed and had some very catchy tracks.
-A good implementation of parkour challenges into the main overworld, with chests containing rare items and materials acting as good rewards.
-A very well balanced difficulty level that felt challenging but fair at the same time. In addition, is quite user friendly, as it allows players to scale the difficulty of both puzzles and enemies/bosses as they please at any time in the game.
-Side quests are also really well made. While a select few are boring fetch quests, the majority are often unique and involve unique gameplay elements that are repeatable in that mission, for example, a tower defense-esque mission late into the game. In addition, many side quests will have unique bosses with new movesets and puzzles required to beat them.
-Story follows a very interesting premise and is very well written, with characters that genuinely invested me into the story, and Lea, despite being a mute protagonist, displaying some genuine emotion that made me care about her as I was playing. Story also contained some genuine twists I didn't expect, keeping me invested.
-A good amount of content on offer: Took me 48 hours to complete the game (I did not edit or change any difficulty settings, I played the game on the default difficulty), which included the main story, most major side quests and most chests, and there are plenty of extra chests I could go back to collect and an endgame arena where you can participate in challenges to get trophies and unlock special endgame equipment. This, with the added promise of post game DLC coming, gives Crosscode some great value for its asking price.
Cons:
-While they didn't occur very often, I did experience a few frame rate drops within the game, generally in moments when a lot of explosions or super arts happened at the same time on screen. Generally didn't affect too much overall, but did get a little distracting at times. Aside from this, I experienced a consistent and stable 60 FPS on the highest settings with no bugs.
-While I thought the bosses were overall well designed, the final boss, without spoiling anything, wasn't quite as 'epic' as I would've liked. It was still well made, don't get me wrong, but it seemed considerably easier and not as engaging compared to some earlier fights within the game.
-Not enough partners. For a good chunk of the game, you only have access to two partners (Where the maximum amount you can take with you is only two anyway) and you only get access to two more (bring the total up to four) at about, roughly, halfway through the game, with certain sections having moments where you must have specific partners for the plot. I find this kinda odd, as there were other characters within the story that I easily feel could have been added, but at least the four partners you do have access to are pretty good, both personality wise and from a gameplay perspective.
-The ending seemed to be a little abrupt. It wasn't unsatisfying or anything, but it did feel like it ended just a little too quickly and may have needed just a tad bit more story to make it more conclusive. Hopefully, the post game story DLC will be able to rectify this issue.
Conclusion:
Overall, CrossCode is a fantastic Indie RPG game that I absolutely adored playing, and I regret having it sit in my steam library for almost a year. If you enjoy puzzles, fast-paced combat and/or a lovely 16-bit style, this game is absolutely worth it for full price, let alone on a sale.
Verdict: HIGHLY Recommended (Worth it for full price)

The gameplay is fun and engaging with a certain element of puzzle solving to defeat enemies, that's not to say that you can't grind and obliterate every enemy, it's just that the puzzle mechanic adds a little more to fighting than just mashing buttons. I am halfway through the main story and the narrative up to this point has been engaging as all hell.
The game does such a good job of making you care for the characters that at one point in the game I had to stop playing for a bit just to process an event the main protagonist goes through.
The love and care the devs put into the game shines through every bit it. I can't wait to see what more they have in store for the future.
Also, Emilienator, ngl that made me chuckle for a good bit.

The story is also uniquely impressive. Without spoiling too much, it's very sci-fi and deals with moral issues related to the fictional crossgear technology that the game focuses on. While the pacing of the story definitely isn't the game's strong point, the gameplay absolutely makes up for a few of the story's more boring chapters and I never felt unmotivated to progress through the game.

Pros:
+ Great (if slightly repetitive) combat
+ A mammoth amount of content for a $20 game. I clocked in at 53 hours, but I could easily see somebody getting 70+
+ Smart and well-written dialogue, especially the banter between party members
+ Fantastic story. Well paced, plenty of twists and turns and full of emotion
+ Great puzzles. Not head-scratching difficult, but they certainly require some thought
+ Good boss quality overall, with a few standouts
+ Great soundtrack. Serious kudos here
+ Very pleasing visuals. I'm personally a big fan of the vibrant 16-bit pixel art style, and this game is one of the best in that area that I've seen
Cons:
- The optional endgame content felt too grind-y. I ended up skipping most of it
- The map system was functional, but it would have been nice to have a cursor or tracking for your character
- There was one main character that I felt was underused, especially at the end (won't mention here because of spoilers)
- There wasn't really any indication of when new quests were unlocked in old towns
Overall: 9.5/10

Every area in this game is beautifully put together with a ton of thought and care. As you progress through the game you unlock new areas with more places to explore. But even though you unlock a new area you are highly incentivised to explore every nook and cranny of each area. Almost every area of the game has a secret chest/item that you can get by doing a small puzzle. For me every time I solved a puzzle or went off to a side and found a hidden item I got a dopamine rush.
Many of the puzzles in the game gives me the feeling that I am playing a zelda game. The puzzles start out simple and easy to understand but as you unlock more abilities they get harder and incorporate that new ability in order to solve that puzzle. The puzzles also are a perfect example of the, “show don’t tell” idea. Every time there is a new puzzle mechanic it is introduced to you as simple as possible. So you get the idea that “doing this action, yields this result”. Then after you learn the mechanic it gets mixed together with other mechanics you already know to create challenging puzzles that feel rewarding.
To compliment the puzzles there is an incredible combat system. There are so many different abilities and powers you can spec into as you level. From your ranged attack, melee attack, block, and dash. On top of that there are 5 different types of these attacks corresponding to no element or one of the 4 elements you unlock. With all the options available you are able to create a play style that you find the most fun to play.
The enemies you face also incorporate the combat system so well. Some enemies require you to start at range then close the gap and finish them off, and others may require you to use your dash and block for them to overcharge on an attack then swoop in when they are on a cooldown. Every new enemy you face is almost a puzzle in itself as you try to find their weakness and learn how to dodge their attacks. For me I died a lot. But I feel that is intended as you learn how to beat them. Some enemies that you fight in an area also may have some of their attacks incorporated into a boss fight in that same area to reward your knowledge.
Complementing it all together is the story. The story of this game is incredibly written and all the major characters have interesting personalities and details about them. Along the way there are twists and turns that keep you thinking and interested in what will happen next. The story sets the pacing of the game and what leads you to new areas with enemies that are higher levels. So if you encounter a new area and you are underleveled you will feel that very quickly and know that you should do some other things first to get stronger. You could do many of the side quests or farm enemies from a previous area.
Overall the amount of playtime you can get out of this game for the price makes it well worth picking up.
Now a small issue I had with the game is that it auto sets the FPS to match your monitor refresh rate. However I have multiple monitors a 144hz and 60hz one. For some reason since the game is coded in HTML5 if I have the game open on my main 144hz monitor and any web browser driven application on the 60hz monitor. The game becomes confused and stutters the fps sync between the two refresh rates.

Secret of Mana; and
Legend of Zelda dungeons,
This is a must play game. Combat is fast, intense, and difficult (especially dungeon boss fights). Further in the game, having more elemental power leads to more strategic fast-paced combat, and harder puzzles. The story pulls you along linearly, but the world is open to your disposal to explore. The side quests have meaningful rewards you wouldn't get otherwise, and have some environmental story-telling that's worthwhile.

The aforementioned puzzles include, but are not limited to elements of jumping puzzles, precision rebound puzzles, strength puzzles (think Pokemon), ice floor puzzles, and precise timing with little room for error. This extends to how you defeat enemies, including bosses and there are some truly sadistic brain teasers throughout the game. While I may enjoy that aspect of the game, I can understand how some people would not and these elements are unavoidable and heavily prominent in the game. So if that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, it may detract from your experience. Besides that hump, I’d consider this game a real gem. The pixel art is gorgeous, the writing is more than capable of being genuinely humorous and tear jerking, and the story has plenty of mystery and thought provoking messages that may resonate with both game players and game developers. Additionally, the game is festooned with pop culture references everywhere. Just take a look at some of the achievement names which only scratch the surface of what you’ll encounter if you look hard enough.
In conclusion: if you’re unsure if you’ll enjoy this game, try the demo on the Steam page to get a feel for the gameplay. It does include a demonstration of what to expect from puzzles, especially the jumping variety. If you enjoy that, buy the game off of GOG.com. In my opinion you won’t know for sure if this game is for you until you’re well beyond the 2 hour mark that Steam allows for refunds. The first major challenge will come with the puzzles and bosses of the first dungeon (the ice one). Also, the story may start slow, but will really begin to intrigue around Chapter 5. Which is after the first dungeon.

My biggest tip for new players however, is for the love of god, make sure if you want to get 100% chest completion, use markers on your map. I went through and had to go all the way back to the beginning to get all the unopened chests without using markers and it was a complete pain in the ass to go back. Also make sure to analyze all your plants in an area before moving on or you'll have to backtrack for that as well.
I'd recommend a playthrough, and the fruits of your labor with NG+ options are worth it if you want more before the Epilogue update comes out, as well as endgame stuff like Arena will keep you busy for a hot minute.

Combat is crazy good
Story is excellent
Soundtrack is very nice
Puzzles are a nice challenge
Writing/Dialogue is great
There was not much that I did not like. The only things I can think of was that I could not use any key on the keyboard (left Ctrl for example) when I was rebinding some controls. Also, it was not a problem for me but maybe there should be a main quest tracker of some sort in case you were to set the game down for a while. You might not know what to do when you pick it back up.

I'll ALSO say that this game can be a little tough to approach for many folks because of its length, and the unexpected difficulty of its puzzles. Furthermore, the puzzle section can last for a long time.. sometimes over multiple play sessions. To say nothing of the individual chest puzzles littering each and every zone in the game. I just want to caution folks that this game quite often will spend several hours focusing on the story, AND THEN difficult puzzles, AND THEN comfy faux-mmo adventures with your pals. Because these individual segments can be so long, I think this is a bit of an exhausting experience for those not ready for its demands.
If you're ready to rise to the challenge, you'll find a big treat in this game. Our protagonist Lea is among the most loveable I've encountered, and her cast of friends and adversaries are colorful, interesting, and worth hanging out with for long periods of time (you will). The soundtrack is incredibly groovy, the atmosphere is cozy, the art style is gorgeous, there's really not much to dislike! The story is good, and has some nice reveals. Some elements didn't land for me near end game only because I spent SO MUCH time doing other stuff before the final segment so I was sort of detached.
So yeah absolutely recommend this one. If you think you like what you no doubt already saw in the images and trailers then you're probably right.
