wish i'd bothered to recognise that critical deficiency before i wasted (thankfully not a lot of) money
i like some brainless carnage as much as the next pilot, but not if i can't fly an aeroplane with the regular method of control - ww2 didn't have planes with game pads

Very easy to play & a decent selection of planes to replay the missions on for a different experience - easy simple & re-playable - I just wish more games were like this. If you want realism try something else - if you just want to have fun play this.

I would ONLY recommend this game to those desperate for another flight combat game. This one is short, clunky, dated, and frustrating at times.

If you are bored, feel free to give it a try.
The controls are fine, and you will enjoy destroying other planes in this aerial war.
Don’t expect too much from this game though.

For one, the AI for your teammates is downright inept leading to some frustration while playing the campaign. For some reason, the AI prefers to fly in random patterns when not given an order to attack or defend you. When said orders are given, the AI prefers to fly around or sometimes into enemies rather than shooting them down. I'll be honest though, this didn't annoy me too much as I'm used to doing everything by myself (come one, it's a combat wings game) and was more hilarious than frustrating. What is very frustrating is flying back to your carrier to land and accidentally destroying the whole universe. Why is this so frustrating? Because you have to restart from checkpoint. And do it all over again, just to crash...again. This wouldn't be so frustrating if the game told you that you need to press the 'x' button to lower landing gear, but it even says the landing gear deploys automatically, which is false. So if you want to avoid smashing your keyboard to bits like me, landing gear deploys with 'x'. I am still confident saying that this will annoy new players to no end. There are lots of negative reviews that only mention landing and for good reason.
Something that is absolutely nonsensical about the game is the fact that while playing on controller (the preferred way of playing the game, at least from me), you can't assign or change keys. This means that unless if you have a controller that you can physically remap keys for, such as a PDP controller, you're stuck with what the game has defaults for. These defaults are awkward and uncomfortable to use. Thankfully for me, I own a PDP controller and was able to remap keys manually. However, I still think this is unacceptable because I don't need to do this for other games in the same genre. It's like playing a console exclusive that only works on keyboard. I don't need to buy a keyboard for my controller and neither do I need to buy a controller with specific software. Another thing that I saw as being completely unnecessary was the co-op system for campaign, specifically for campaign. This was a major selling point for this game, and honestly I don't know why, aside from it being something new and different. I did try this system with a friend and realized quickly that is is not needed at all. Aside from removing some of the frustration associated with AI, co-op for campaign is redundant as you can do the same tasks alone, sometimes even better depending on your partner. I say that this only applies for campaign because in dogfight and survival, we both had a blast playing against each other or against waves and waves of AI. But besides that, I could care less about co-op.
Edit: I forgot to mention ace mode, or the 'I win' button as I like to call it. This is a button that basically wins the game for you. You only need to press the 'fire' button when using ace mode and you'll win. You don't have to use ace mode, and I highly recommend not doing so. If you can, I would even encourage you to unbind the left trigger as to never use it. However, I have noticed that when playing the campaign on easy mode (only to get the 5 stars for all difficulty levels), I noticed ace mode automatically activating when the 'fire' button is pressed. I promptly never played on easy ever again.
These are just some things that I had some trouble with or wanted to mention to anybody who's thinking about buying the game. Despite bashing it in the last two paragraphs (well, three), I still recommend this game because for an arcade experience, It was pretty solid and fun, once you get past all of its drawbacks. This review only exists to inform potential buyers about some of the game's problems. Remember that this is only my opinion and you are free to disagree and call me an idiot in the comments.

I was not disappointed. This game is NOT A REALISTIC FLIGHT SIMULATION GAME. It's not hard to see, so don't go crazy thinking it's going to be too hard. Difficulty is actually very different in range. You have easy, which is for people looking for a quick (and easy) game. On the other side we see hard, which requires you to bring out your inner ace to survive more than 2 minutes.
It's worth a try. And if you have any extra currency, the DLC are also worth buying, as they're creative in unique ways apart from the base game.
Oh, by the way, don't listen to the people with half an hour telling you that landing is hard. It's not.

Campaign
You play as two pilots, Whitworth, who is part of the U.K. Royal Air Force, and Harrison, who is part of the United States Air Force. Playing as both characters enables you to complete a campaign focused in the English Channel and Pacific Theatre. The campaign contains two Acts. The story is logical because missions are spread over events that happen in WW2, however, there is not much of a story because each mission has an independent narrative. I finished the story in three hours. I think that all missions were quick and not too challenging, so ultimately, it is an enjoyable experience without investing too much time into playing it.
Gameplay Mechanics
Dogfight 1942 nails the finer details incredibly well. Flying air craft feels mostly smooth and fun. Moreover, I loved the voice acting and dialogue in the game, the characters were witty, coherent, and accents were spot on. In addition, the campaign has a nice variety of air craft that the player can use, which has different capabilities. Specifically, I particularly liked that as you progress throughout the campaign, you can try new air crafts that were developed later in the war.
My only issue when flying was the transition between Ace Mode into free-flying mode. Ace Mode allows your pilot to concentrate on following an enemy plane, which has a limited cooldown. I find that when stopping Ace Mode, it is difficult to control your plane with the mouse, sending you spinning, and quite frankly, is headache inducing. As I used Ace Mode regularly, it was a negative frequently-experienced.
Performance
Please be aware of some major issues with the game and the relevant workarounds. When I first launched Dogfight 1942, the game would not load on my main monitor and I would receive consistently less than 5FPS. It is because I selected 'Screen One' and 'Full Screen' on the game's settings. To fix this issue, un-select 'Full Screen'. This will enable you to play on your main monitor (if you have dual) and in borderless mode, which fixed both of my issues.
Another issue I encountered, which was generally more annoying, was despite playing in borderless mode, when I alt-tab and re-enter Dogfight 1942, I cannot control the air craft and will have to re-load a save. This issue will likely never be fixed, but be aware to not alt-tab during missions.
Conclusion
Dogfight 1942 is surprisingly an enjoyable game that features a solid campaign, fun story objectives, a nice variety of aircraft, and excellent voice acting, dialogue, and characters. I think the campaign was short, and I encountered two major technological issues; one that has a workaround and the other that is an annoyance. With this said, I recommend this game on sale as it was an enjoyable experience.
