Über das Spiel

Combat Mission Black Sea is a military grade simulation depicting a fictional series of escalations between Russian and Ukraine which results in open conflict in the summer of 2017. As Russian forces move into Ukrainian territory the Ukrainians do their best to defend their country against a numerically and technologically superior adversary. Events surrounding the invasion cause NATO to send its advanced rapid deployment forces to check the Russian advance. A brutal scenario, for sure, but one which allows you to get a glimpse of what full spectrum contemporary near-peer tactical warfare is all about.

HIGHLIGHTS
At your command are detailed, highly researched American, Ukrainian, and Russian units from common brigade types such as Mech Infantry, Motor Rifle, Stryker, Armored, and more. All the capabilities one expects on the modern battlefield are included, such as Active Protection Systems (APS) swatting incoming threats, UAVs hovering around the battlefield transmitting valuable intel, and precision guided artillery munitions that find their mark in one shot. Well, as long as the enemy's electronic warfare attempts fail, otherwise you might find your finely tuned fighting machine isn't so finely tuned after all. Take all of this for a spin with four high-stakes campaigns, 22 standalone scenarios, and a plethora of Quick Battle maps to test your tactical acumen.

FEATURES
  • Tactical warfare at battalion and below scale in a true 3D environment
  • Command individual vehicles, teams, and squads
  • Expansive simulation of "soft factors" such as Morale, Experience, and Leadership
  • Innovative systems portraying Fog of War, Spotting, Line of Sight, Command & Control, and Objectives
  • Unmatched realistic physics, ballistics, and battlefield effects
  • Fight in a wide range of weather and lighting conditions, all of which realistically impact fighting abilities
  • Unique hybrid system for RealTime or WeGo (turn based) play
  • Full featured Editor for maps, scenarios, and campaigns
  • Quick Battle system sets up deliberate or randomized battles based on player specifications
  • Single player and head to head play, including Play By Email (PBEM)
  • Supported for the long haul with patches, upgrades, and expansions

Combat Mission: Black Sea features the most modern military equipment in the whole series. It originates in 2014, but it was brought to steam several months ago and i quiet like it. It may looks ugly and has a really bad performance, no matter how good your PC is. But on the other hand, it simulates combat cituations very deeply. Its a fairly realistic game to a certain degree, but there are a lot of compromises to keep the game playable and sometimes these compromises are just caused by engine-limitations. Spotting for example can be a bit janky, as soldiers sometimes dont see enemies a few meters away, even its bright daylight and good weather. Small arms are not very different, it actually dont matter much if your squad uses AKs or M4s. Walls can be penetrated, but the dont degrade over time if get shot at (except for HE-Rounds, if big enough). Close Quarter Combat isnt really good as the game lacks special CQC-Orders like breaching buildings. And so on and so forth. All in all, the game still delivers an authentic experience and mimics real gunfights good.

While the game experience is good, the game certainly has its flaws. The Tutorial is shit, the developers dont bother with explaining anything. If you want to understand the game, read the manual. Or watch guides on youtube. A LOT of guides. While the game is not easy even if you understand it, a better tutorial would help new players getting into it. My first Combat Mission war Battle for Normandy and since then, i play Fortress Italy, Afghanistan, Shock Force 1 and 2 and now Black Sea. I am kinda experienced but did not understand the game fully. The games covering World War 2 are a lot easier (but still difficult) as the dont have electronic warfare and modern weapon systems. A Tank in Black Sea is extremely vulnerable to precision Airtstrikes or ATGMs, that wasnt the case in CMBN. So for beginners i highly recommend the WW2-CMs.

Another big annoyance is the pathfinding. I would assume that units take the closest way to the target. But nope, they sometimes run around a building then running right through it and get shot in the meantime. this can be avoided by placing shorter waypoints, but that is not optimal in many situations, e. g. when crossing a plain field which you naturally want to pass as fast as possible.
Wheat fields can be verry annoying as they block line of sight effectivly. Sometimes they prevent me from ordering target-orders even if the theoretically should see the target. Also, they are interfering with the hull-down command of armored units. you can order your armor to look over a slope and dont show much of the own body. Normally, the enemy just can see the turret of your tank while your tank sees everything. That does not work well if the slope is covered in wheat (or even grass) as the command only take the ground height into account and not ithe grass/wheat on top of it. I know, there are workarounds for all these things but sometimes the game feel even more clunky as it is already.

My biggest gripe however is the price tag. yeah i know the developer team is small and the have to eat and yadayadayada. But im sure they would earn a lot more money if the games (and the dlcs, which are nearly full price) werent that expensive. black sea dont have any dlcs, but its still very expensive with the 60 € price tag. even i as a fan dont buy all the games/dlcs because they are so ridiciously expensive. Most people wont even consider trying the game out because of it. The good thing is that battlefront at least provide Demos which help with the purchase decision but as i said, 60 € are very much even if you like the game.

I can recommend it to veterans of the series (but they probably buy every title anyway). The game is even harder than shock force 2. For newcomers, i dont recommend it. Play the WW2 ones instead. Sadly, they are not on steam, but that might change some time

It's a fun war game for small to medium scale battles with a lot of hidden simulated mechanics, regarding spotting, armor penetration, inter unit communication, morale, etc. It's a modern realistic RTS, thus you will not be building up bases and pumping out units. Instead you will be carefully moving your units on the battlefield, trying to spot the enemy before they see you. Spotting someone first often guarantees a kill. I've understood that some version of the game engine might be used in actual training in some real world militaries.

In contrast to some higher level war games, you are able to command individual units. While that gives you more granular control to lay out your tactics, commanding a huge number of units can become a little tedious. Therefore I prefer to play Combat Mission on smaller scenarios. How the units act and respond to enemy fire on spot is determined by their own AI. The units will however not move (except retreat) without player orders.

The overall feel and pacing of the game is good. The fights are quick, brutal and enjoyable to watch. The game features 1v1 multiplayer (no coop, unless using steam remote play and sharing mouse and keyboard) and a scenario editor, which I like. I've read quite many criticizing the UI and while not as slick as in titles like Wargame and Warno, I think it gets the job done.

On presentation and performance side, things need improvement. Running the game on 5950x and rtx 3080 suffers from sudden hickups and freezes, depending on the scenario. It's 90% good but you can really tell there is room for much improvement. This goes on top of the fact that the game does not look very good. The unit and terrain models are most importantly accurate and nicely done and in addition to serving their purpose can at times look alright. But in general the presentation is not really up to 2022's standards. You can and should use external post processing tools to make the game a bit prettier. I really hope that now that the Combat Mission games are on Steam and more accessible to general public, Battlefront would be positively pressured to tidy up their games. While the Combat Mission games are all about realism, putting effort on this can't forever be an excuse not to spend some of the resources on improving graphics and especially performance. (I've read on Battlefront's forums that they are working on a free upgrade to the engine from version 4 to version 5, which *should* introduce some form of performance enhancements.)

That being said, Combat Mission Black Sea is a game held back only by it's aging engine. Even with these cons, it is in my opinion the most enjoyable modern themed realistic war game I've come across.

this game turned historical real quick, however love the gameplay its a rts dream boat for modern forces however some of the units can be a bit dumb easy to work with, controls took a little to work through and the right way to play etc, has a really interesting way to play and its never the same. love it definitly will be putting more hours in when i get the chance. if ur looking for a game like this but with heaps more content try combat mission sjockforce 2 first then this one, this has heaps of missions but the other one has tons both exceptional games

Takes some to learn, highly recommend reading the manual and doing the tutorial. There are some good youtube videos as well. Once you get the handle on it, very immersive! The graphics might not seem the best at first but the level of detail for each bullet, fatigue, morale, mental state of each pixeltruppen, communicate delay, etc.. lends this to be one of the best strategic games ever.

Maybe not best the typical layman gamer but if you're into modern warfare strategy games, this is a must have. Highly recommend overall.

After playing any of the Combat mission tittles I can't go back to any other RTS/Sim for my war gaming.

Combat Mission Shock Force 2: Focuses on a middle eastern conflict involving playable NATO nations.

Combat Mission Black Sea: Focuses on a European conflict between Russia and Ukraine and NATO ally USA.

If true realism is what you're looking for than any of the Combat Mission games are for you.

Best strategy game i have played so far. There is a bit of a learning curb, not required for getting to start playing, but deffo required if you want to start winning :) Very very rewarding game. Extreamly high re-playability, some of the campain levels i have played already 10 times over, and they never played out twice the same. After almost 60hours i have not yet completed a single campain (there is a few) and maybe only 2 of the quickmissions, let alone the 1000's of extra hours of gameplay you get from adding mods.

This game will keep me busy for a couple of years i think and train my tactical brainhalf, well worth every penny of it's rather steep price!

For the price, it's a bit lacking- not because the simulation is not in depth, or even that the UI is a bit outdated- indeed, this battalion-on-average simulation is one of the best in its niche. The thing is, the engine it runs in is horribly optimized. With a mid end ryzen and a 2080, this game, despite its age, runs very slowly on anything but lower settings. This is due to the almost absolute use of the CPU and general disregard for your GPU. Small freezes and stutters are the norm. Generally speaking, this does not matter too much, especially if you see this like a tabletop wargame- beauty is not the point, as long as you can tell what's what enough to make solid decisions. Simulation good, engine horrible. Recommended, on sale.

I loved Combat Mission Shock Force 2 and I absolutely love this one too, it is hands down my favourite modern warfare strategy game. CMSF2 focuses on asymmetrical warfare where as CMBS focuses on warfare between equally matched modern armies. Both games are worth getting if you are into this kind of thing.

The Combat Mission engine is, by now, well reputed in its capacity to depict warfare in a variety of settings. This iteration is no exception, and the wargamer in me loves it. It's just a shame that it runs like weapons-grade ass, which is why I will never recommend a Combat Mission game.

Amazingly detailed tactical simulation. Yes, there is a lot of work involved, particularly in the larger battles. There's an active multiplayer community. While the price is steep for an older game, it is still being actively supported. Now hat it's on steam, most definitely worth getting on a sale.

This game is one of a kind. Sure it has it's kinks but you will not get this experience from anywhere else.

Seeing your infantry conduct a coordinated charge while artillery is raining on the enemy is one of those great moments in gaming.

Quick tip: The basics of this game is to use the smallest amount of force to find the enemy and destroy it with tanks, artillery, aircraft. Learning that will improve your experience ten fold.

Awesome game.. I had CMSF1 years ago. Been waiting and hoping they'd come to Steam. This is a slow paced, tactical turned based (also RT if that's your preference) game that is heads and shoulders above it's competition. Gameplay > Graphics any day of the week imo. Definitely worth the $$$. Give it a try.. Tons of vids in YT so you'll know what you're buying. 9/10

Personally a big fan of all of the Combat Mission games. They remind me of the fun I had playing Advanced Squad Leader with my friends many years ago. I still have the entire ASL line of games and have been wishing I could play them again. This is the next best thing.

Graphics are not up to today's top notch visuals and some things in the game are incredibly clunky, but that isn't really why I like these games. At least in my case I can bypass these and look at the other things that the game does really well, like the tactical nature of the encounters, multiple paths to your objectives, combined arms combat, air power, etc. I prefer the turn based mode in CM:BS to real time, but again that is due to personal taste only.

Just need to save up to buy Cold War now...

Total newb to Combat Mission. Been steeped in Command (CMANO) and DCS for years. Finally decided to try something different.

It's great. Not that hard to learn. Watching the 19 part tutorial on YouTube certainly prepped me nicely. The rest was pretty intuitive.

UPDATE :

While I'm having fun with with the sim, what becomes glaringly evident after several hours of play is how poorly optimized it is. The game itself is fine, but it's like I stepped into frame-rate hell. Now I'm completely fine with the game looking it's age, but when this thing wants to slow down and frustrate you in the middle of a critical decision, it has no problem pissing you off.

(I'm not going geek-out on my system's credentials. I assure you it's powerful enough to run anything out there smoothly. Otherwise, I wouldn't be blaming the game.)

To minimize this, I unfortunately had to trash the main campaigns and just relegate myself to playing custom quick battles on tiny maps.

The core game itself? I love it. It delivers a battle experience that is pretty much what you would expect to see IRL.

If the devs ever get this thing to perform as if it existed in the current gaming-pc technology level that most of us know, then this would be one of the top war-games on the market.

But I'm accustomed to gaming with acceptable frame-rates, so this is a major issue for me. I'll still recommend it, but with the caveat that you are more than likely going to have to deal with some BS. It's worth it, but there is no doubt that this game needs an overhaul.

The combat mission series has made the traversal to steam, starting the process of leaving the safety net of the old familiar (though sadly ageing) group of wargamers from decades ago. The series offers the most realistic, deep and expansive portrayal of modern historical tactical combat out there. By far. The engine powering a lot of what is going on behind the scenes has been tweaked (and continues to be worked on with each release) to the point where despite being far from perfect it easily beats all other offerings.

However.

They are not ready for steam. It is 2021 at this point and the progress of video games in the last 20-30 years seems to have only had a partial impact on the Combat Mission series. Their model has been hugely expensive games for a small and intensely loyal audience, the big cost attributed to keeping themselves afloat. I strongly suspect that the reason these titles are appearing on steam is that they have realised they need to reach more players.
But this game by itself is not suitable to more players. I'm not talking about dumbing down the simulation. I'm talking about features that all games should have in 2021 to avoid giving their players a really jarring and off-putting experience. The very, very basics are being completely overlooked in favour of (to these developers it seems) the more interesting work of expanding their model and more 3d assets. Other than in combat the game is in 4:3 resolution. Camera controls and mouse controls have input lag (how is this not fixed?!), moving the screen is not intuitive and joyless, giving your units orders is painstakingly slow paced and joyless, the map itself when viewed at any height is plain, flat (even when it isn't?!) and joyless. Don't even get me started on the backdrops.
This all makes sense when you realise this game is catering 90% to a crowd of ancient (sorry guys) wargamers who love to take hours plotting their moves for a minute's combat, sending the file by email to their buddy who repeats the same process. But that crowd is a tiny fraction of the potential audience for these games. Which brings me to multiplayer. Is it fair for a game to claim to support online real time multiplayer that doesn't actually work unless a user has access/knows how to port forward - and even then apparently doesn't even work/work reliably? (Hamachi appears to be a reliable alternative for those wondering).
It amazes me that Battlefront had the balls to release their games on steam to the wider audience without even bothering to address some of the most basic accessibility bugs that they have known about for decades.
I am desperate to love combat mission, but the incredible depth, the beautiful little actions of the pixeltruppen playing out before you are completely inaccessible to me behind a barrier of truly awful controls, terrible optimisation, insane graphic choices (you can 100% reach a simple low cost aesthetic without the game hurting your eyes, start with handling the goddamn area outside of play) and awful, awful camera controls. You have a gem but I really can't be arsed wanting to reach for it as the process is so draining and joyless. I play games to relax and have fun, which is why every time I try combat mission I give up and find something lesser but with a UI built less than ten years ago.

I'm not the only player who wants to love your product. Please stop treating us like spoiled, lazy children who 'if they can't read a manual or put in the work' don't deserve fun. We shouldn't have to read a pdf to play the game, we shouldn't have to hack around to get multiplayer working. For the price you are asking, these seem to like ridiculously small requests. Otherwise you will find that myself and folk like me will drift on and then swiftly drift off, no longer even looking twice when a new offering hits the store. I won't be buying any games from you again unless this stuff is fixed.

Do you want a real challenge? Also Micro Managers wanted.

This game is an ego killer for streamers and wannabe military commanders. Firstly this is a very serious wargame and if you play this with no serious understanding of tactics, patience, and are instead relying on your men of war or company of heroes gaming background. This game will chew you up and spit you out upon the alter of a bad review because you wanted something easy or story mode. Which is why so little content is streamed or videos on youtube.

That being said. Multiplayer is direct IP connection or play by email. Yeah thats how you know a bunch of old ass cold war field officers put this thing together. Also why if you read a doctrine manual from a war college you will straight up see it played out in the A.Is actions on some missions. Poking the Bear is a mission that comes to mind in this. So Anyways. The Developers of this game charge to much don't provide updates, don't really even upgrade with the times. Likely one died and their kids took over a share which is how this ended up on steam. They have a lot of potential but sadly will never realize because most people like easy stuff, they won't figure out how to do a multi player that isn't from the late 90s, Heck they re released shock force as shock force 2 and its the same game.. Literally they just updated the engine. Even with the negative comments that may be made.

If you are someone who really wants to spend 60 bucks and have a real hard challenge buy this stuff and help a geriatric game developer get out of touch gifts for their great grand kids who hasn't provided a new developer made campaign in years. The Best treat about purchasing this game is to head over to battlefront forumns and just make a post that Strykers are better than bradleys sit back pop some popcorn and enjoy the hate that rains down upon you and you may also learn a few select insults that you could not even possibly imagine existed.

Seriously though it is a good game but I would buy it on sale. If it ever goes on sale and sale to these guys is 39 bucks. They are old. They are snobs and they hate you.

Combat Mission Black Sea is probably my favorite title in the Combat Mission series. The game requires massive amounts of thinking, strategy, and implementation of real world tactics in-order to accomplish the any given mission within the realm of modern warfare in a hypothetical U.S. - Russian armed flashpoint in the country of Ukraine. Inspired from real recent events, the player is charged with commanding forces from three different factions that cover different perspectives of the conflict and also challenges the player to adapt his/her strategy to that of different forces allotted. This game is probably the most realistic and therefor challenging strategy game out there and is second to other in terms of pure realism and detail. I can highly recommend this game to anyone that dosen't mind spending a good amount of time learning and getting past the huge learning curve that comes with this game.

I love this game, and especially love the fact the devs put demos on their website. Without the demo, I NEVER would have paid more than $15 for this. If you want a realistic tactical strategy game, I can't think of anything that even comes close to the Combat Mission series.

This is a serious war game for dedicated tactical war gamers. It blows Eugen’s “War Game” series out of the water! This is billed as a “military grade simulation”, and that is a true statement. You are maneuvering real U.S. Army, Russian and Ukrainian MTOE units. There is no picking and choosing of “decks” with arbitrary numbers; there can be no helicopter spamming here or artillery snipers masquerading behind support decks and no superhero special forces squads to fly into a spawn location. This is no gimmick warfare. You succeed or fail based on fire and maneuver according to sound tactics.

I am a career infantry officer and a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College. I started my career in the mechanized world, so I know and understand the heavy brigade fight. What struck me immediately were the mission briefings. They were simplified operations orders with doctrinal tasks and purposes! There were specified tasks to subordinate units! And then I looked at the developer’s notes and saw the reason why; many of the scenarios were created by men with rank and the same training and understanding as myself. This game isn’t some computer nerd’s cinematic concept of combat. As one reviewer noted, “If it can be seen, it can be killed.”

By way of comparison, I’m going to beat up on the beloved “War Game”. Eugen’s research with “War Game” was superficial, and there are clear biases in the game towards Soviet/Com Block equipment. One of the most frustrating things about “War Game” is the requirement to have scout units to detect anything. Whether by design or by mistake, this is fallacious. Many of the scout vehicles used in the late Cold War as recon vehicles were exactly the same as their counterparts in mechanized battalions. Scouts screen, guard and conduct reconnaissance to fight for information and/or to gain and maintain contact. They aren’t meant to be randomly dispersed with tank and infantry units just to let the latter “see”. Almost all of the armored vehicles in “War Game” are incapable of acquiring targets at range and engaging. This is ridiculous, and in “Combat Mission” the tanks make full use of their optics. Optics make an even bigger difference for variables, such as night, low visibility and bad weather. Eugen didn’t take any of this into account. They seemed to have been stuck on “Russian tank, big gun, win battle” without considering Soviet deficiencies in training, commo and advanced optics. Furthermore, Eugen seemed to regard infantry as superfluous cannon fodder. Tankers fear infantry in the tree line with good AT weapons more than they fear other tanks. In “Combat Mission”, grunts in the tree line are formidable and difficult to detect.

This might sound like an apples to oranges comparison of two very different games. It isn’t. The serious war game enthusiast who wants to play a tactical level, “Close Combat” type game with attractive graphics (rather than moving icons on a map) is likely to have played “War Game”, and, like me, was dissatisfied with poor modeling and the extremely nasty community. Even though “War Game” spans the 1970’s to the mid-1990’s, the subject matter remains closely related. The fight is very similar, just much more precise and lethal. Given the attention to detail, I am confident that the “Combat Mission” development team did their homework. This is important. When I lose a tank, I can accept that was modeled as accurately as possible and not the result of the inherent biases of the developers.

In spite of how impressed I am with the game, there are some unfortunate flaws.

1. Game play is cumbersome. It is hard to maneuver through the screen and select/de-select units. Frequently the game locks up. The fighting is still going on, but you can’t zoom in or out or select anything. Then, suddenly, your “camera” view winds up 1,000 miles above and way off the map.

2. Calling for CAS in “Combat Mission” without destroying every last air defense unit will result in disaster for the player. I know that the survivability of an “off screen” air support unit essentially ends up being a roll of the dice. Nonetheless, a sortie by an AH-64 AWT firing Hellfires as far as 11 Km isn’t a suicide mission, even with a couple of enemy tactical ADA assets. Attack helicopter pilots are trained to fly at tree top level and find a firing position. Once in position, they find a tank, launch, drop and displace. This minimizes their exposure to tactical ADA.

3. The tactical mission map during the briefing is useless. The lack of any topographical representation of the battlefield makes rudimentary planning impossible. There should be a better pre-mission map screen showing the layout of the terrain and where forces will be deployed. Even when you enter the deployment phase, it is very hard to understand the terrain. In a game where line of sight is critical, the player needs to be able to maneuver and deploy his forces by taking advantage of whatever cover and defilade is available.

4. The lack of a simple “Line of Sight” tool is frustrating. “War Game” did this very nicely as one can click on a unit and draw a line out and essentially get a read on what that unit can see. In “Combat Mission”, it is very hard to understand what the individual unit can see unless you try and get the camera down to its level. In a battle, that is time consuming and almost pointless. I know that the targeting tool shows an LOS, but that isn’t a convenient way to simply click, point and draw an LOS line for a unit.

5. The standards for seizing an objective are unclear. During a final U.S. campaign mission, I destroyed all of the enemy’s armored formations and seized two of three objectives by having infantry and/or armor on the objective. It was a decisive victory. But the game rated it a marginal success because it didn’t consider those two objectives to be seized, or, more accurately, completely clear. Look, if I have a tank platoon on an objective, the presence of a couple scared enemy infantry in foxholes without AT weapons doesn’t constitute a contested objective. This was a problem in the old “Close Combat” games. I shouldn’t have to find and kill every single guy cowering in a building corner to have control of an objective.

6. Combat reporting is non-existent. Some games overdo this to the point of reporting every banal detail. Unfortunately, in “Combat Mission” nothing is reported. You can lose major platforms without knowing a shot was ever fired. Is this possible in reality? Sure, but eventually, somehow and in some way the loss of a tank or a squad will be known. All war games must balance reality with playability and the fact is that the player needs to know more than maybe he would in real life in order to play the game. One can lose an entire, critical small unit early in the game without receiving a single report and without knowing it until you start searching for a unit that is no longer there.

7. Infantry squads should have access to the M-3E1 Carl Gustav RR. It bridges a critical gap between the Javelin and the AT-4, having much more punch for close-in tank killing than the latter. Second, platoons should have medics. It’s frustrating to see men lying on the ground with a red cross symbol knowing they will simply expire in the game and count against you as a death. Role 1 medical care is always a significant planning factor, and players should be forced to balance the mission with keeping points for evacuating soldiers.

8. No unobserved fires. While this is a realistic ROE restriction, in this case its unreasonably restrictive. I should be able to call for fire on a treeline or building from which I am receiving fire, even if I don't have PID.

Badly optimised, dated graphics, non-existent AI, no support for Steam's workshop.

You buy it because there's no alternative, not because it is good. Use reshade to make it look a little less ugly.

Super glad this game came to Steam. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. Can't wait for more titles to release here--I fully anticipate buying all of them.

I'm a long time wargamer (board and PC) and this game is one of the best experiences I have ever had. The fog of war, spotting mechanics, ballistic and soft factor modelling... superb. I'm super impressed by the level of detail in the system itself.

This game won't be for everyone. The gameplay is slow. It's unforgiving. It's expensive for what you might expect (disclosure: I don't think it's overpriced at all given the amount of work that must have been done in the research/modelling alone). It comes with about 300 pages of manual to digest. The graphics are fine for a simulation, but nothing to write home about. The optimization is atrocious--this game runs like a slug (long time fans will tell you it's all the calculations being done, but it chugs even when paused or in turn based mode or with the hardware so far above the recommended specs you'd expect to run 10 instances of the game on max settings... it's optimization, homies).

That said, I unequivocally recommend this game. 8 hours in and I have had some exceptional wargame moments. The Bradley that got pincered by enemy AFVs while guarding a crossroad. The BMP that got an ATGM into the side of an Abrams. The mistiming of an artillery strike leaving my advancing infantry screwed... Something magical here.

There's a demo available for each game in this series. Give it a try.

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

Combat Mission Black Sea is the second game from the long-running Combat Mission series that found its way to Steam. It is one of the newest games in the series, originally released in 2014 but significantly upgraded twice since then. It originally used the CMBS Engine 2, now it runs with the new CMBS Engine 4.

Black Sea covers a hypothetical war between NATO and Russia over Ukraine in the year 2017. The game tries to simulate a modern battlefield environement and it is possible to use electronic warfare, unmanned aerial vehicles, precision guided artillery and laser-guided weapons.

Combat Mission Black Sea is a strategy game that can be played in real time or turn-based in either four campaigns, 22 pre-made battles or in completely self-created battles. The graphics are not exciting, the price comparatively high, the UI need some time to be understood, but the game covers a niche in which there is little serious competition. Combat Mission Black Sea attempts to depict modern combat at the level of small infantry units as realistically as possible. If you are looking for a game that simulates what happens on a battlefield at a tactical level, there is nothing better on the market.

During battles, the weather, lighting conditions and terrain will affect how the weapon systems and real-world vehicles function. Projectiles fly through the area in a physically correct manner and can damage or destroy individual vehicle systems. The truly unique feature of the game, however, is the consideration of morale and experience at the level of the individual soldier. The best weapons do absolutely no good if the soldiers operating them are paralysed with fear or too distracted to see what is happening around them. The game also simulates the flow of information within your units - just because one of your soldiers has spotted an enemy, your whole army cannot automatically open fire on him immediately.

During the game, it often seems very quiet for a long time before all hell suddenly breaks loose. When the action starts, tracer bullets fly everywhere and deafening explosions and the screams of the wounded and dying can be heard, you really get the feeling of the total nightmare of being in the middle of such a battle.

Conclusion:
Most accurate (but not prettiest) simulation of infantry warfare.

I was way to slow to buy this game as I thought it was dated. Far from it. A genuine masterpiece. The graphics are pretty good overall. The game play is outstanding. The ease at which one can make terrains and scenarios gives this unending replay value. After playing this for about 100 hours I went and bought the Shock Force 2 bundle - which I'm also hooked on! It has the magic of being almost a simulator but also great fun. Realworld tactics work!!!!

Disclaimer: don't mind the low hours on record, I have played the non-Steam version for a good couple hundred hours.

Do you like the Wargame Series, but find it too twitchy and arcade-y? Do you like state-of-the-art level of simulation? Do you like being able to use tactics found in real-life training manuals for officers, and have them ACTUALLY work in a videogame? If yes, you'll love this game.

Do you prefer fast-paced RTSs? Do you prefer carefully balanced, rock-paper-scissors gameplay design? Do you want your stategy games to be easily accessible? Do you prefer playing online to playing against the AI? Do you hate reading manuals? Then you probably won't like this game.

This game is hard. It's complicated. Your fancy Bradley Platoon will be obliterated by a couple ATGMs and a T-72 in a single turn if you forget to scout carefully. That Bradley platoon is gone for the rest of the campaign. Good luck!

This game takes a while to click. At first, you will be *destroyed*. The sister game of this, Combat Mission Shock Force 2, at least has you fight as high-tech NATO troops against guerillas and the Syrians with outdated tech. That one is probably a better start if you're new to the series. But in my opinion, this game is orders of magnitudes better than that one. In Shock Force 2, it's ridiculously easy to establish fire superiority and just obliterate the Syrians. In this one, the Russians and the Americans are roughly equal, with the Ukranian forces being slightly weaker (although nowhere near as bad as the Syrians). Depending on which force you choose, you'll have to employ different tactics. The manual is a good start, and explains the strenghts and weaknesses of the different armies, and the US Army training manuals are a good follow-up for the US forces. Russian or Ukranian manuals are much harder to find (if you don't speak Russian or Ukranian), but the community is extremely helpful, and there are plenty of helpful resources.

Anyway, go buy this game. It rocks. Literally unlimited amounts of fun. Don't forget to pop in to the /r/CombatMission subreddit!

Also if anyone wants to play PBEM, please hit me up, precisely zero of my friends wanna play this game with me :'(

*IF YOU ARE HAVING VIRUS ISSUES, LET THE LAUNCHER AND GAME .EXE FILES THRU YOUR WINDOWS DEFENDER FIREWALL*

Harsh and unforgiving turn-based or RTS set in 2017 Ukraine. Unlike similar RTS games (MoW, CoH) this game's dedication to realism is unyielding (not that CoH and MoW dont have deep strategies, but the tactics are more based around meta-game balance). Unit spotting is based on radios, PDAs, sound, speech, and hand signals. Vehicle health and damage is advanced, and even non-penetrating hits can damage secondary systems (comms, thermals) which affect combat efficacy.

Graphics are utilitarian in nature, meaning they are advanced enough to display tactical factors (terrain, visibility, altitude, sight-lines) but dated for the current year. For those who would enjoy this game, the graphics will likely not detract from the experience much at all.

This game is only for the kind of person who wants deep, tactical military simulation of platoon to company sized engagements, with multi-hour missions and stats down to the number of bullets each unit has. If that is not up your alley, I would not recommend, if that IS interesting, then this game is very well worth the price.

In-depth review located here!
So this is combat Mission Black Sea, it might not look like much on the surface, in fact when my friend first got me to play a combat mission game I thought it was pretty bad: clunky controls outdated UI. the truth is though that although everything I just said above is real (which mods can fix some of it) there is nothing quite like this game at the detail, graviteam tactics is a close competitor but both devs are clearly trying to do something different.
The important thing to note is that this game is not a real time strategy game although it might look that way this is a war game simulator. it requires patience and a sloppy execution of realistic tactics will get all of your pixel soldiers and pretty vehicles killed.
I will say right off the bat that if you are totally new to this series it may be in your interest to buy one of the other games from World War II on Slitherine or Combat missions official website because: Black sea is very brutal. The modern weapon systems and ranges involved create an incredibly unforgiving environment you would never want to be in. And I still find myself losing to the AI at times weather through tactical blunder or my own failings. Everything must be scouted, the maxim if you can see it you can kill it is true. 1 crappy rpg team not cleared out by your infantry could mean the difference in your tank platoon HQ winning you the game or going up in flames. So while this is realistic I'm only bringing up the point that this game is a little bit slower than some of the other ones, everything must be methodical and when you do attack an objective it has to happen all at once with an overwhelming force or you will lose most of the time; while on the other hand the other games are more forgiving when you're learning all of the complicated mechanics. If world war 2 had a danger zone of 8 this is a 12.
This game even has a manual with all of the vague details of how the game works and all of the weapons in the game which you probably might want to browse at least to understand: for example Russian/Ukrainian RPGS cant be fired indoors without bag things happening but U.S have a few that can.
Everything in this game is simulated from the weather in the battlefield to what your troops can see to their morale and fatigue and experience, every individual unit has ammo and sighting is shared up the chain of command. If PLT 1 spots a tank the leader (if there in contact) will share that up the chain over time so other fire groups can see it. it's a truly incredible system but until you understand it completely it will lead to some frustration.

Multiplayer- requires you to put in an IP address to play with your friends (USE HAMACHI) some of these games will take a long time to finish, (you can save) the Discord is full of people that play a lot of this game in multiplayer so you should have no problem finding friendly opponents.

So to get on with some of the bad things- as i said the UI is incredibly outdated there are mods to fix it ( visit A FEW GOOD MEN mod page to get scenery and UI mods.) you'll often be wondering how do I do “XYZ” well there's an answer for it, trust me but it's not intuitive and will require multiple steps to get there but once you get used to all of these things it's not much of a problem.

And if you have a supercomputer there are things called Master Maps which you can download which are real life areas that are gigantic which you can play some enormous battle with your buddies. ( my friend and i just finished a 30 hour battle we played over a few weekends with reserves. Needless to say hundreds and hundreds were dead) There is a Discord for this game which you can find in the steam forums and it's highly recommended you join that if you buy this game there are lots of tutorials and helpful people there. So in short the game’s UI is not perfect but if you give this game a chance and you're into military war gaming you'll realize there's nothing quite like it and you'll just put up with the few annoying U.I problems. You may say to yourself that you have played wargame or steel division, but you will quickly see that those are real time strategy arcade games and that this is a military simulator. One is not better than the other obviously but I'm just saying you really can't draw comparisons between the two.

Visuals- black sea is one of their better looking games but it's still sort of ugly but sometimes you get some cinematc scenes in battles occasionally. There are a lot of texture mods that make this game look better definitely get those and RESHADE i feel is a must, its a texture utility program that after a quick google youl find a youtube video it makes this game look 10 times better no joke and it took me 30 mins to set up.

Now the last thing ill address is eventually there is going to be a lot of reviews on Steam that are negative because of the price of these games and while that may be true the fact is you are getting a lot when you buy this. There are multiple campaigns that will take you a huge amount of time to finish there are a ton of scenarios and not to mention multiplayer as well as creating your own scenarios also on the ‘ few good men website’ there are a ton of player made scenarios and a few Campaigns! which are just as good as what the developers made but free!
I have 300 hours on the combat mission website purchase version and im only about halfway through the Sp content. Granted about 100 has been multiplayer.
Thanks if you made it through my bad grammar!

This is the Combat Mission title - expect only the most realistic hardcore, military-grade squad to batallion level tactical simulation there is on the market. Had this title since it was published and have many hours invested in it. It is a time sink and if you are completely new it takes a while before you learn the craft but it is extremely hard to master it if mastering these games is even possible. You need to employ real word tactics used by military in order to succeed. It is the ultimate big boy game you can get for yourself if you are into war sims.

Been with the series for a long time, owning WW2 titles and this one - modern combat is quick with all the fancy modern era gadgets. This series has it all - get the one which thematically suits you best.

The downside to all these games is that often you will get slow speed when it comes to frames per second due to the game engine being built on a graphical architecture that has been abandoned by Nvidia and AMD years ago so optimization is simply not there and stuff that should be fluid simply isn't. If you can go past this an absolute gem of a game awaits you.

Performance tip: Turn off the shadows and shaders and set the 3D model quality on balance for a more smooth FPS experience.

A must have for anyone seriously interested in modern conflicts.

Addendum:
Many people seem to be wondering what the main difference is compared to other CM titles.

Black Sea is definitely not just a 'reskin', it plays very different from the WW2 titles and even compared to Shock Force. Numerous tactics that worked very well in other settings are just not feasible anymore. Weapon systems are much more deadly and units are typically smaller, which together result in a very different experience.

I am very happy to see another Combat Mission-series game appear on Steam, and hope that with time their entire catalogue will be available here! For me this is the pinnacle of tactical combat games.

This game is a hardcore tactical combat game, not a an RTS-game one can just pick up and play. Past and current military professionals might enjoy this straight right away, others may need to read various US Army field manuals, mechanized infantry platoon and squad FM being a good start. More advanced hardware and capabilities is modeled, so one needs to study even more than CMSF2. CMBS is very challenging, where real-world tactics work and are rewarded. Minor mistakes can be severely punished. Realistic victory conditions; neither side will mindlessly fight to the last man, a 15% casualty-rate might be enough for your mission to be declared a failure. CMBS offers both turn-based and real-time game. Turn based feels more structured and forces you to plan and time your actions more precisely since you have NO ability to influence your forces as the 60 second turn plays out. Veteran and Elite skill-levels disables borg-spotting and fosters attention to your command and control. Black Sea models completely modern BLUE and near equal RED forces so the lethality of weapons are magnitudes higher than any WWII-iteration in the combat mission series.

The combat mission series plays exceptionally well as PBEM against human opponents. Lethalithy is very high, but the forces are more balanced than Combat Mission Shock Force 2. WWII-iterations of Combat Mission may allow you to observe enemy movement from afar, but there are not necessarily weapons systems with range and precision that will allow you to engage. Scouting, stealth and utilizing all available systems is even more important in this game. To be seen is to be killed.
